The End of Green Eagle?

I started following not just the far right, but fringe religious and scientific beliefs too, in the late 1960's.  At first it was an amusement to follow the likes of the National States Rights Party, or Scientology or General Semantics, or lunatic Evangelical religious groups.  But around the time of the Reagan administration, I began to see that these perverted people just refused to give up their malign idiocy, and they were starting to attract funding from rich sociopaths that believed they could personally benefit from encouraging the public to detach its political views from rational thinking.

At that time I began believing that what was happening, if it remained unchecked, could result in such a right wing surge in the United States that we could find ourselves facing a fascist takeover that could sweep away everything we thought was unalterable about our country.  Well, with a couple of exceptions, no one believed me.  I even had an acquaintance who is a psychiatrist, who started out thinking I was a paranoid schizophrenic, who a few years later admitted that everything I had said had proven to be true.

Time went on, and the rational people who should have taken it upon themselves to take a stand against this ever-growing American love affair with hatred and violence, just averted their gaze.

Ten years ago, I began my blog, in an attempt to document this storm which was overtaking our country.  As time went on, I found a few people who could see what was so clear to me, but basically the vast majority just ignored what was happening.

I spent those years documenting this savage outpouring of irrational dementia, as it grew worse and worse.  That was the task I assigned myself, and I kept at it for just about 5,000 posts.  In my Wingnut Wrapup articles alone, I documented about 10,000 specimens of right wing malice and mental disturbance.

Well, there is little left for me to do today, in a country where the aberrations that I have written about do not need to be memorialized in a blog; they can be heard every day coming from our President and his party.  It's there for everyone to see now; they don't need me to point it out to them.

I just do not believe Green Eagle has much of a function any more.  I will probably write a little when I feel like it, but I think that it is pretty much time to pull the plug on this blog, and just hunker down and wait out the storm, if I live that long.

Thanks for reading my posts over the years.  I hope we may all live to see better times, but I just don't have any faith in that happening.

Green Eagle, your dogged determination was a beacon for all those who saw as you saw. Take a would deserved break. Post about flowers, food, and finny things and come back to the struggle when or if you can. And if you never blog again? So long and thanks for all the fish. Best of luck be well.

don't give up. Many like myself don't
have the expertise to write or say what you have eloquently put out
We will always need voices like yours.
I do not comment but I always share and discuss your point of view.
If you leave you will be missed
Thank you for all that you have written

The vulgar horror show that is the current administration does make it feel that commentary is redundant... but somewhere, someday, someone will be interested in what people were thinking as they lived through this.

Of course you should do as you judge best. I for one would miss seeing your posts, and even though the malignancy of the right wing in general should now be obvious to everyone, I know there have been specific events or situations I've seen here that I hadn't otherwise heard of.

So far it looks like the worst of the post-election pessimism (I felt it too) has been unfounded. I thought the ACA would be swept away, but so far it's survived, because the enemy is so factionalized. Trump wanted to remove sanctions on Russia, but Congress has slapped him down. He pulled out of the Paris accord, but the major cities and states are sticking with it, and the rest of the world is doubling down.

You might want to consider taking a few weeks off just to get away from all the toxicity (I did that about a year ago, though for rather different reasons), and see how you feel about blogging then. Either way, thank you for all you've contributed.

I began following politics back in the 1950s, when Eisenhower was in the White House and the Jim Crow Democrats controlled the South. So I became a Republican.

I didn't want to see how the two parties changed over the decades. My small-city newspaper was also right-wing, so the information I received didn't make much of a dent. (This past week, every column it ran from a nationally syndicated columnist was from someone mentioned in at least one of the Wingnut Round-ups.)

Someone directed me to Green Eagle, and I thought he was not quite in touch with reality. So I began to challenge him in these comments.

He responded back.

I tried to keep challenging him. I didn't convince him of my positions, but he convinced me that there was something wrong with my Republican Party.

So I voted for Clinton next election.

I'm going to miss the youngster.

Thank you, Green Eagle

Please reconsider! I just found your blog via a very learned individual who sent me a link to one of you commentaries. You are not alone in your analysis of the state of affairs on mother earth.

I can attest that you were one of the few people I knew who were 'connecting the dots" way back when. I think I have a more optimistic faith in the cyclic nature of life than you do, and have not given up hope of a 'correction.'

Perhaps it will become clear to you how you can apply your talent for research and your passionate rationality to another area of civic life. I believe it's time for imagining Solutions...picturing scenarios that get us back to the world we thought we were born into.

I'll still check this site regularly, and hope the see more thought-provoking analysis and entertaining outrage from Green Eagle.

Best wishes.

I want to thank all of you for the (obviously) very kind comments. If I really have something to say, I will say it. but I do believe that current events have pretty much proven that I was correct in what most people regarded as a paranoid delusion, over the thirty years and more than I have been saying it. Jean Valjean talks about a more optimistic view; as Jean can attest from a private communication we had, at the present time, most of my hope for a better future for the United States is now riding on an explosion of the Yellowstone Caldera. Talk about Deus Ex Machina. Well, it will all be interesting to watch, even if there is nothing new to learn from it all- we know what is going on now, it is only if the fascists can get away with it, a question over which Green Eagle has no effect.

I wish to thank you as well, Green Eagle. I have only come to follow you recently. It has seemed like the only time I bother to comment has been when I disagree with you. But I have appreciated your efforts, Your wingnut wrap-up has been marvellous entertainment and also good documentation.

You will be missed. And, of course, if things start to look up, we shall all see much more of each other.

May I again state that I am not giving up. I just believe that events in our country have overtaken me, and what I have been doing the last ten years is just not necessary. Every person in America can see what I have been predicting, coming to pass right in front of them. The ones that still refuse to see the truth are unreachable by any appeal to facts or reasoning, or even to a better nature that they do not possess. There is really nowhere for me to go that doesn't amount to saying "I told you so" over and over again, and that does not make for a very appealing prospect. I've followed the hidden agenda of the right for fifty years now, but that agenda isn't hidden any more. No one needs me to see it.

Please keep writing. As I said before I just learned about your blog from my daughter. Your voice has been heard but not being a multibillionaire what can I do to affect change but sign petition after petition and attend rallies and protests. But finding others who see the current political situation for what it is is important as there is always strength in numbers and at least for me keeps me from being too depressed. Before she sent me a link to your writings I had renamed my twitter account greeneagle. Please let me know if you want me to rename it. It was perfect for me as I am about as "green" as you can get minus my vehicle and I am a loner. Thank you for all that you have been doing and please continue!

I hear you.

You have articulated our thoughts for years as you documented the Great American Tragedy.

The Reagan Revolution is over. The Right has seized power and face little opposition. If real opposition occurs there will be furious retaliation from the authoritarian corpo/military/police state.

It is dispiriting and depressing to witness the end of a democratic republic, brought about by a Cult of Right-wing Authoritarian Personalities. They are a minority, but the true believers of the CRAP are fanatic cultists and their agenda is backed by big money. They will not compromise. They will not reason. They will not yield. And they most certainly will not have mercy or compassion on the politically crippled majority of Americans.

As the late great George Carlin stated, "You don't have rights, you have owners...This country is finished."

I may be missing something - the internet hasn't been helpful with giving info one way or the other - but what was the problem with General Semantics? I haven't heard of it before.
Green Eagle said…
General Semantics was a lunatic cult that enjoyed some considerable fashion among academics in the late sixties and early seventies. Its leader was S. I. Hayakawa, who as President of the University of San Francisco played a very public role in the campaign of then-California governor Ronald Reagan in violently putting down dissent against the Vietnam war. I could have named many others- are you familiar with orgonomy, a cult founded by Wilhelm Reich, who in the early twenties was considered one of the world's greatest experts in the field of psychiatry, but who tragically became deeply mentally ill and created this absurd theory which, despite its idiocy, enjoyed a good deal of popularity at one point, and still has its believers today? Or the greatest craziness of all, Lawsonomy, whose leader, at its height during the great depression, was touring the country speaking to crowds of 20,000 at a time? I could mention many more, too- the Urantia Foundation, Eckanckar (the idiotic success of which was a major factor in inducing L. Ron Hubbard to write Dianetics) and on and on. I don't recommend your spending too much time learning about these groups; most of them are in the past now, and it's time to focus our attention on the malignant progeny of their promotion of falsity for their personal gain, today's Republican party.

I'm new here. And I've only read one blog - July 30th, 2017 - and the comments. Generally the comments to any news or blog portray the value of that piece of work.

I'm disheartened to have missed the train, but will wait at the station should anyone remember to come back.

Each voice, in a sea of voices, is important.
Green Eagle said…
Thanks, Anonymous. Well, obviously, Green Eagle can't keep his beak shut for very long, as he has already squawked out another post. It's just that I will need to pretty much repurpose my blog from being a chronicle of the triumph of hatred and greed in American politics, to something else. As I believe that we have likely just witnessed a coup in this country, that is important enough to comment on. So far, I am just about the only person who has said anything like this, but over the decades, I have been the only person to say a lot of things that have now come true, so I stand by my guess that Trump has now been effectively neutered by the military. We'll see.
Pinku-Sensei said…
Your comments on General Semantics, Orgonomy, Lawsonomy, the Urantia Foundation, Eckanckar, and Dianetics reminds me of my days on alt.usenet.kooks, a USENET group that made fun of such ideas (and more idiosyncratic ideas by eccentric individuals, such as Archimedes Plutonium's conceit that the universe was a giant plutonium atom and Timecube's four-fold day). If you had been on USENET ten to twenty years ago, you'd have fit right in. That written, the current capture of politics by kooks and cranks, such as Alex Jones and his followers, especially the Follower in Chief, is a much more urgent matter.
Green Eagle said…
I guess that's the point. It was one thing to relegate the coverage of this maundering idiocy to a virtually unknown blog, but now that these views and others equally malicious have made their way into the core of the Republican party, someone who has the ability to do something about it is needed, and Green Eagle sure doesn't fit that description.

And lets just be clear that anyone who actually tells the truth- from bloggers like Driftglass and many others I can mention, all the way up to great journalists like Keith Olbermann, are systematically excluded from the public discussion, in favor of corporate liars who get paid millions to lie away the obvious malignancy of the right in this country.

You will be missed, big green bird.
Green Eagle said…
Gruaud, Thanks, but to paraphrase the old saying, "how can they miss me if I won't go away?" I can't imagine continuing to document a phenomenon that you can see every time you turn on the news, but I am already finding a few things that I can't shut up about. And I have a half written post from a little while ago that I think I will try to finish tomorrow.

Oh well, sue me.
