US Embassy Attacked- Shut up about Benghazi!

So here's an item that, I suspect, will be pushed out of the news as fast as possible.  From the Washington Post:

"Protesters chanting ‘Death to America’ break into U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad... Hundreds of angry supporters of an Iranian-backed militia shouting "Death to America" broke into the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on Tuesday, trapping diplomats inside in response to U.S. airstrikes that killed or wounded scores of militia fighters."
No, this is not Benghazi under Obama, it is Baghdad under Trump.

And this further information is, I think, hardly comforting:

"Supporters of an Iranian-backed militia besieged the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday in retaliation for U.S. airstrikes, breaking through the first layer of security at the embassy compound and damaging a reception area before being expelled by Iraqi security forces."

Yes, the mighty United States military, so strong under Trump's wise leadership, was impotent to repel this attack on our own embassy, and had to rely on Iraqi troops to do it.

I have to say that if the Democrats in the House do not start multiple hearings about this event, and keep them up for every single day from now until the election, they are utter fools.  Not that I expect them to do the right thing, even when it is this obvious.

They Still Don't Get It

The press, I mean, even as liberal a news source as Daily Kos:

"Oddly committed to normalizing Trump by scrubbing off his hateful and dangerous rough edges, many in the Beltway press continue to play a strange game in which they refuse to describe what they clearly see in front of them. Whether it's the fear of Trump Twitter attacks or the nearly five-decade-long GOP campaign to demonize the "liberal media," newsrooms today nearly uniformly refuse to address the mounting, obvious signs that Trump is a deeply unstable man."

No, it is not either of these things that cause the press to continue to minimize the criminality of the worst President in history.  It is because, due to Republican "deregulation," virtually the entire mainstream press has fallen into the hands of the rich, who see their possession as nothing but a way to continue their stranglehold on the country.

And no, thankfully, sites like Daily Kos do not participate in this malignant misuse of our media, but comments like this one still display an utter lack of understanding of why the press acts the way it does.  As I have said many times before, the mainstream press is not the Republicans' dupes, they are their collaborators.

The Republican Lie Machine Fires a New Cannon

Glancing at the wingnut web yesterday, I saw a story that I had missed entirely:
Diamond and Silk:  "BOMBSHELL: AG Barr Indicts 8 For Funneling Millions In Foreign Donations To Schiff, Clinton and Top Democrats"
Catholic Answers:  "Barr Indicts 8 for illegally funneling foreign money to Schiff, Hillary and several Dem senators"
Lucianne.com:  "Bill Barr Indicts 8 Including Mueller...Top Witness for Funneling Millions in  Foreign Donations to Adam Schiff,  Hillary Clinton and Top Senate Democrats"
Ace of Spades:  "Bill Barr's DOJ Indicts Pedophile/Mueller Source George Nader and Seven Others For Conspiring to Make Illegal Donations to Democrats, Including Adam Schiff...Bill Barr just broke up a massive scheme to illegally funnel foreign money into darn near every Democratic political candidate and organization. 
The list of the Dem organizations taking this illegal money is astounding – almost every Dem state organization and many super PAC’s including the big one Priorities USA.  All of the leading names in the Democratic party took in this money including Adam Schiff and Ted Lieu, Jon Tester, Cory Booker, Hillary Clinton, etc."

And on and on the posts on this "story" go.  There are literally dozens of articles about this in Republican world today; I counted 39 of them in the first five pages of hits when I did a Google search.

Of course, the story seems to have been originally spread by the biggest liar on the internet, Jim Hoft:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Bill Barr Indicts 8 Including Mueller Top Witness for Funneling Millions in Foreign Donations to Schiff, Hillary Clinton and Democrats — New Data Shows Bill and Hillary Involved...Bill Barr indicted eight individuals for illegally funneling foreign money to Adam Schiff, Hillary Clinton and several Democratic senators. 
The list of the Dem organizations taking this illegal money is astounding – almost every Dem state organization and many super PAC’s including the big one Priorities USA...All of the leading names in the Democratic party took in this money including Adam Schiff and Ted Lieu, Jon Tester, Cory Booker, Hillary Clinton, etc."
Curiously, I was unable to find a single article about this massive scandal in any mainstream publication.  After their swallowing of Republican lies about Benghazi and Hillary's e-mails, you know that they would have already been screaming about this for days.  But of course, the explanation for that is obvious, as clearly revealed by Mr. Hoft:
"The Liberal Media covered up a HUGE liberal campaign donations scandal last week.  A HUGE DEMOCRAT MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR CAMPAIGN DONATIONS SCANDAL WAS BROKEN UP!"
Of course, every media outlet in the country to the left of Joseph Goebbels covered it up! Not a single one of them reported on this gigantic scoop, for some reason.  That explains everything.

It has been obvious for some time that whatever damning evidence emerges about the corrupt, treasonous behavior of the Trump White House, Trump and his trained monkey of an Attorney General are going to fabricate a blizzard of lies accusing the Democrats of exactly the same thing, only on a much worse level.  We know the fix is in after the Inspector General utterly denied the Trumpian delusions about the investigations of his criminality, and Barr announced that there is another investigation covering the exact same territory, only conducted by a Ken Starr-like stooge who can be trusted to lie as easily as Trump and Barr.  

So here is just one installment in this plan: a completely fictitious scandal accusing the Democrats of crimes identical to the ones Trump committed.  Hold on to your seats, because for the next year, it is going to be one after another of these vicious smears, and sad to say, like the e-mail story, a couple of them might stick.

The Ultimate Degradation?

From the Independent, courtesy of my friend Curt, the following almost unbelievable news:
"China approves Donald Trump-branded spas, escort services, hotels and massage parlours without US Congress permission...
The 38 trademarks include new hotels, spas, escort and concierge services, massage parlors, personal security services and insurance, according to public documents."
Escort services and massage parlors.  Donald Trump has now reverted to his grandfather's business, which formed the basis of the family fortune, whore houses.

Trump is now running Chinese whore houses out of the White House.  If this wasn't Donald Trump we are talking about here, this would be totally unbelievable, but unfortunately it is all too easy to believe with him.

When is enough enough for the Republican party?  Do they really believe that running whore houses while President of the United States is not enough of a misdemeanor to throw this miserable excuse for a human being, who has installed as first lady a former porn star, out and put him in prison where he belongs?  How much are they willing to tolerate to get their corrupt judges and tax cuts for the rich?  And when will the rest of the American people finally say that we have had enough of this deliberate degradation of our country in front of the whole world, all to benefit a foreign dictator?

Wingnut Wrapup- Impeachment Edition

Yes, an abbreviated Wingnut Wrapup devoted to the reaction from the right to Trump's impeachment, on the day after it happened.  They usually have a lag of two or three days before they really get up to speed on things like this, so there will certainly be more, and worse, but here's  a pretty good sample of the graciousness with which they have accepted the current application of the will of their blessed founding fathers:
Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Mark Levin: Nancy Pelosi's Latest Impeachment Stunt Is Brazenly Unconstitutional..."Nancy Pelosi was apparently advised by leftwing Harvard law professor Lawrence Tribe to delay sending the impeachment to the Senate. So she’s unilaterally sitting on the impeachment. This is another brazen unconstitutional act," Levin wrote Thursday morning on his Facebook page."
Ha ha, Constitutional law scholar, and the most vicious right wing talk show host out there, Mark Levin, telling us that the greatest expert on the Constitution in the country doesn't know what he is talking about.  And what to do about this savaging of our precious Constitution?
"Here’s what Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans must do in response: The Senate has the sole power under the Constitution to adjudicate an impeachment. Therefore, Pelosi is attempting to obstruct the Senate’s power to act on its constitutional authority. McConnell should immediately put an end to this and declare the impeachment null and void as the speaker has failed to complete the impeachment process by timely sending it to the Senate for adjudication" 
Nothing in the Constitution about timely sending, of course, except in the part written in invisible ink that only wingnuts can read, but really, Levin's suggestion isn't any worse than the way the Republicans intend to act anyway.
Cortney O'Brien, Town Hall:  "Former Florida AG Pam Bondi, who's helping represent Trump during the impeachment trial, mused that the speaker just wants to withhold those articles because "she wants to say for a bit longer" that Trump has been impeached."
Nancy Pelosi can say that Trump has been impeached until the end of time, Cortney.  Deal with it.  And let's not forget that this is the same Pam Bondi who dropped fraud charges against Trump in return for a campaign contribution.

Now, let's take a break for some right wing humor, shall we?
Bet you got a chuckle out of that, huh?  By the way, given how the last several Republican Presidencies have worked out, this might actually be a good idea.
Chris Stigall, Town Hall:  "When Inspector General Horowitz was called to testify before the Senate last week...Horowitz was also repeatedly asked to explain what he found related to political bias within the agency that led to flagrantly abusive behaviors and violated policies.  Again and again, Horowitz demurred.  Frankly, it was hard to watch."
It was hard to watch that their own hand picked inspector general could not find a thing to substantiate their conspiracy theories.
"All honest people know a phony, baseless political document paid for by Trump’s political opposition was used as justification to trick a court into granting permission to spy on the Trump campaign."
Or to be more direct, all dishonest people, since that has been proven to be a lie.
Matt Vespa, Red State:  "Constitutional Crisis? Pelosi Threatens to Withhold Impeachment Articles from Senate Republicans"
It's not a Constitutional crisis when their guy tries to turn the country into a dictatorship, but it is one when the Speaker waits a couple of days before passing a piece of legislation on to the Senate, in an act mentioned nowhere in the Constitution.
Nick Arama, Red State:  "Trump Laughs At Impeachment At Michigan Rally: ‘I’m Having a Great Time’
Because he is positive that corrupt Senate Republicans will crush any attempt to remove him, no matter how criminal his behavior is.  That is a thing of pride to Trump supporters.
Stu Cvrk, Red State:  "The Clintons have a long habit of not admitting past criminal behavior and then, when caught, doing everything possible to weasel out of accountability through delays, prevaricating, and legal maneuvering"
Of course, we all know who has that habit. Just a reminder that it's all about someone else.  And projection.  There's always the projection.  This is from an article claiming that indictments against Hillary for who knows what are going to happen any day now, despite there being absolutely no evidence of such a thing happening.  And face it, with Barr as Attorney General, it is a real possibility.
Streiff, Red State:  "The Left and NeverTrump Creates Yet Another Fake Controversy Over a Dead Democrat Joke"
Because, what could ever be wrong about a taunt about a recently dead Democrat?

Not among his rabid followers.  They have proven long ago that no disgraceful behavior on his part will affect them in any way.

Well, I guess he sure told them.

This may be my favorite item of the day: stocks soar at the prospect that Trump might be removed from office, and it's a good thing for Trump.
Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Honest Democrat Jonathan Turley: “You Could Impeach Every Living President” on These Type of Allegations"
"Honest Democrat" and decades-long right wing hack for Fox News, Jonathan Turley, elevated to the status of Constitutional scholar through his willingness to say anything that promotes Republicans.
Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "They Don’t Even Hide It Anymore: FakeNews WaPo Hacks Post Celebratory Tweet After Democrats Impeach President Trump"
Sorry to set you straight, Jim, but any American who does not celebrate this impeachment is betraying our country.  And with this item, Jim once again wins the coveted Wingnut Wrapup hat trick for writing three monumentally stupid posts in one day.  Jim is by far the leader in winning this award, so we will see him back here soon, I am sure.

And how about a final dose of right wing humor for today?

Man, that one sure tickled my funnybone.  What a bunch of cards those Republicans are. "Throne of lies," what a great line.  And by the way, why is Nancy being yelled at by an elf?

Well, grifting money from their stupid base is all they ever care about, so who is surprised to see them gloating over it.

Well, that should be an item of great pride to Republican voters.

At the risk of being accused of gloating, I wish to point out that, early in the history of my blog, I stated that the first thing Obama should do upon becoming President was to declare that Bush and Cheney, in turning their attention to the American aggression against Iraq, had so irredeemably destroyed the American effort in Afghanistan that our war there was hopelessly lost, and he was withdrawing all American troops before any more lives could be lost in this miserably botched endeavor.

Just to show that speaking the obvious truth has not only with Trump become grounds for dismissal from the conversation.

Look to Kavanaugh

Boy, wouldn't you love to come up in front of this judge.

If anyone has any doubt what the Senate Republicans have in store for the trial of the patently guilty Donald Trump, they only have to look at the way that those same Republicans handled the investigation into the appointment of the grotesquely unfit Brett Kavanaugh to serve on the Supreme Court.

This sham investigation included:
Tens of thousands of pages of information about Kavanaugh's history that the White House refused to turn over, with the collaboration of Senate Republicans.
Multiple vital witnesses to the accusations which were never even talked to, let alone allowed to testify, at the behest of the White House.
Vicious, lying attacks on the limited witnesses that were allowed to testify, both from the White House and Senate Republicans.
Massive synthetic outrage from Senate Republicans, designed to obscure the facts in a maelstrom of anger and distortion.
And finally, a party-line vote to place this disgusting creature on the Supreme Court, with Republicans totally ignoring his unbelievable performance on national TV showing his clear unsuitability to be any sort of judge.

Well, get ready, because we are about to see an unashamed repeat of this disgraceful dereliction of duty in the upcoming Senate trial.

Wingnut Wrapup

I want to start here with a comment a Republican Senator made during the Horowitz hearings today:

"Isn't the lack of evidence in itself evidence? The lack of evidence of bias is not evidence that there was no bias."  

No, and it's not evidence that Santa Claus does not exist, or that Obama is not the antichrist, either.  It is, however, evidence that a massive Inspector General investigation could find no bias in the efforts to unmask Trump's treason.

Now, before beginning today, I feel it necessary to make a comment.  As some of my readers may know, I have been following the right wing in this country for about half a century now.  When I first started, the sort of thing that might make it into Wingnut Wrapup was little more than an irrational curiosity that existed only on the very fringes of our political world. That has all changed now.  At this point, the entire Republican party has given itself up to a unified, and utterly false, view of reality in which all Democrats are satanic pedophiles out to dominate the world, Republicans of the Donald Trump ilk are great patriots despite openly selling the country out to our greatest enemy, any effort to help anyone other than the already rich is a malignant plot, our most long-term allies are really committed to destroying us, equality is a Communist plot, there are no rights other than the right to whatever you can pay for, and on and on.  When you read what is below, it will no longer seem like some strange vision from a mirror world, but the constant product of all Republican leaders, spreading these lies in concert.  That takes a lot of the fun out of seeing this mountain of grotesque lies.

Town Hall:  "On Monday afternoon, Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz released his highly-anticipated report into the origins of the Russia/Trump investigation, as well as possible FISA abuses.  Both political parties are claiming vindication, with much of the media parroting the pro-Democratic spin, per usual."
"Parroting the pro-Democratic spin," i.e. saying what is actually in the report, rather than screaming out the endless Republican distortions.
Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "Yes, Ukraine Meddled in Our 2016 Election. That's Not a Baseless 'Conspiracy.'
Yes, it is, Guy, which you know perfectly well, unless you take the word "baseless conspiracy" to mean one that doesn't help Republicans lie their way into the White House again.

Here, by the way is Guy's grounds for this lie:
"Ukrainian government officials tried to help Hillary Clinton and undermine Trump by publicly questioning his fitness for office."
In other words, for stating the obvious truth, that he was grotesquely unfit to be our President.  Speaking the truth is questioning Trump, and clearly nobody who is not a Republican (or a Russian) has the slightest right to speak the truth.  And, luckily for the non-truth, no Republican in recent memory has had any interest in the truth.
Julio Rosas, Town Hall:  "Fox News Swats Down James Comey's Claim His Appearance on 'Fox & Friends' Was Canceled"
If by "swats down," you mean "lies about it."
Matt Vespa, Town Hall:  "DOJ IG: FISA Application for Spy Warrants Against Trump Official Riddled with Errors"
Of course, Matt does not seem to be concerned that it also totally destroyed all the Republican lies about the investigation of Trump.  That is not important, but clerical errors are vital.
Julio Rosas, Town Hall:  "'This Was an Attempted Overthrow': Trump Holds Nothing Back After IG Report Is Released"
Trump holds no lie back...what a surprise.
Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "AG Barr: IG Report Makes Clear the FBI Launched an Invasive Investigation on Thinnest of Suspicions"
Barr does not make that clear, because it is a gigantic lie.  Barr did claim that, but that does not make it true.
Cortney O'Brien, Town Hall:  "GOP Rep Introduces Motion Against Witness After His Character Assassination of Trump..."The witness has used language which impugns the motives of the president and suggests he's disloyal to his country and those words should be stricken from the record and taken down," (GOP Rep. Mike) Johnson said."
I.e. the witness told the truth, and therefore his answers should be stricken from the record on the remote chance that any Trump supporter should hear about what he said, in between the relentless din of Republican lies.
Bonchie, Red State:  "Happy Receipt Day: Here’s a Reminder of the ‘Conservatives’ Who Insisted FISA Abuse Was a Conspiracy Theory"
A Republican claim which was totally rejected by Trump's own apppointed IG, but you would never know that from reading the right wing press.
Elizabeth Vaughn, Red State:  "Former DOJ Official: Durham’s Statement Means “He’s Got the Goods on Somebody”
Let's just ignore the exhaustive Inspector General's report that totally destroys Trump's claims, and pretend that some sort of cryptic statement from another investigator who has said nothing in public, means that Trump was right.
Brandon Morse, Red State:  "Daisy Ridley May Have Just Hurt the Next Star Wars Film by Denigrating Trump Supporters"
Just thought I'd throw that one in, as a reminder of how little it takes to set Republicans off on a whining jag.
Nick Arama, Red State:  "IG Report: Steele Briefed Reporters, Met With Clinton Lawyers, Asked FBI About Announcing Investigation Into Trump Team"
All of which was completely legal and proper, but will still serve as an excuse for Republicans to boil over with indignation.

See, if you voted to acquit the innocent, it is a crime if you don't vote to acquit the guilty.  Particularly when the innocent guy was a Democrat and the guilty one was a Republican.

Because Obama's conditions were to promote the interests of the country, not himself.

Just an out and out lie from Trump. Nothing to see there.

No Jim, a complete truth.  What would a Wingnut Wrapup be without a visit from the Stupidest Man On The Internet?
Joe Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "IT’S OFFICIAL: Mueller Targeted the Four Individuals Deep State Illegally Spied On – Carter Page, General Flynn, George Papadopoulos and Paul Manafort"
Flynn-Convicted.  Papadopoulis-convicted.  Manafort-convicted. Page- the Mueller report never got the evidence from the Trump administration.  See, Joe, that is what investigators do: target the guilty.  Maybe nobody ever told you that.
Gateway Pundit:  "WATCH: Rep. Greg Steube GOES OFF On Partisan Democrat Lawyer Barry Berke During Monday Impeachment Hearing"
I'm including this item as a perfect example of how the right wing propaganda machine works.  Their dupes never see a shred of the actual testimony, just a lying rant delivered by a Republican totally denying the evidence right in front of them.

And another example of the same thing.

And more of the same.  Don't get the answers you wanted, just tell your stupid, ignorant followers that you did.  By the way, let's not forget that Hans van Spakovsky is a right wing religious loon, and one of the worst vote suppressors in Republican history.  Not a nice guy.

More lies from Lindsey.  Once again, if the real investigation doesn't turn up what you wanted, just lie and say it did.

The Horowitz investigation proved that Trump was lying, so let's give the Republicans a chance to hire someone even sleazier to "find" the evidence Trump wants.  After all, that's the tactic that worked with the corrupt right wing hatchet man Ken Starr, after the first Republican investigator found nothing wrong with what Clinton did.

In fact, impeachment is the number one concern expressed in real polls by Americans, half of whom want him removed from office.  You will not be surprised, I am sure, that Peter has absolutely no facts of any kind to back up the Republican claim that Americans are not interested in seeing this criminal held responsible for the systematic misuse of his power.

Because you are a lying scum who will do anything to get attention or bilk wingnuts of their money.  Like all of your lawsuits, Larry, it will be thrown out of court, but not before you can use it to fatten your bank account.

A hearing of the Judiciary committee, of which he is not a member.  If he had shown up, Republicans would be screaming that he was desperate for attention and attempting to swing the vote.
“The star witness failed to show up!” exclaimed Ranking Member Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA)."
Schiff was, of course, not a witness at all, and whatever knowledge he has of Trump's treason is included in his committee's report.

If they don't they are crazy.

Protester...and Infowars host.  If you believe the Sandy Hook shooting was fake, the government did 9-11 and controls the weather, maybe you should believe this.

The Future of Evangelical America

I want to quote from this extremely frightening article today in the Washington Post:

Now they were targeting anyone whose faith didn’t align with their own...Priests have been killed. Children have been stoned. An elderly woman was seriously injured. This is the end game of the phony religion of Evangelical Christianity, and this is our fate here in the United States if we do not put a stop to their would-be tyranny and the politicians who cater to it.  And anyone who still thinks differently is hiding his head in the sand, waiting patiently for these so-called "Christians" to come along and lop it off.  It is no different from the masses of religious maniacs that plague the Muslim world, and it will come to the same disastrous end if we do not have the resolve to put a stop to it.

That's it- that's all I have to say about the subject. People who still don't see it at this point are pretty much beyond reaching with evidence or good faith.

A Minor Statistic

A few days ago, three US military personnel were murdered on an air base in Florida, by a Saudi pilot who was there for flight training.

Including 9/11, this brings the number of Americans murdered by Saudi pilots in the United States to 2980, or over 97% of the total number of Americans murdered by all Islamists in this country since 1980. 

This has produced a decades-long campaign of vilification against Iran and a war of aggression which killed a million civilians in Iraq, neither of which countries has ever been found guilty of a terrorist act on US soil.

The action taken against Saudi Arabia?  None.  In fact, the last Republican President maintained his close family ties with the family of the leader of the 9/11 attack, and the current Republican President has had extensive business dealings with the Saudis, and wants to send thousands of American troops to aid the Saudi dictators.

What kind of fucked up country, what kind of fucked up party does such a thing?  Couldn't we at least have a ban on Saudi military personnel and Saudi airlines in the US?  Or some sort of action?

Green Eagle's Pocket Impeachment History

There have, as we all know, been four impeachment attempts directed at American Presidents.  As the impeachment of Donald Trump draws near, I hear more and more narratives that imply that, as with Trump, these impeachments revolved around Presidential corruption.  That false narrative is one more specimen of Republican spin intended to excuse the behavior of one of their own, but like all Republican spin, it is being happily gobbled up by a large part of the mainstream press.  I would, therefore, like to briefly consider the three previous impeachments and what they were really about.

1.  Andrew Johnson

Impeachment of Andrew Johnson

There were no accusations of corruption surrounding Johnson.  Here is what he did after becoming President when Lincoln was assassinated, which resulted in his impeachment:  I do not want to get too long winded here, but Johnson conspired with unrepentant former Southern slave owners to pass legislation that would effectively have reintroduced slavery.  After the years of war and the hundreds of thousands of dead Americans who fought to preserve the union and end slavery, enough members of Congress would not tolerate throwing away the gains and voted to impeach Johnson; although a largely party line vote in the Senate prevented the two thirds majority that would have removed him from office.  In any event, it put and end to his schemes, and history moved on.  I repeat, as hateful as his scheming was, it was not corruption.

2.  Richard Nixon

Nixon did certainly commit crimes, and they certainly were impeachable.  When faced with the inevitable, he resigned.  Nevertheless, there was never any claim that he had used the Presidency to enrich himself and his family, or to align himself with hostile foreign governments, against the security interests of the American people, two forms of treachery which are virtually daily occurrences with Trump.

Some years later, when I lived in Europe, I had European friends ask me how Nixon could have been removed over what seemed to them to be relatively minor misdeeds.  Here was my explanation:  Throughout Nixon's career, there had always been two competing narratives about him:  Nixon the brilliant politician and statesman, master of realpolitik, and Nixon, to be blunt, the crook.  Enough people were induced to accept the first narrative, to elect him twice.  But the details of his behavior in the Watergate scandal were simply inconsistent with this tale, leaving the crook narrative the only one that could account for his behavior; and thus his legitimacy in the eyes of the American people evaporated.  I must note that the Republican party learned a huge lesson from Nixon:  today's Republican base has been so thoroughly propagandized that no revelation of Trump's debased character can get through to them.

3.  Bill Clinton

Let's just get to the point here:  However we may disapprove of Clinton having gotten a little sex with an adult intern, it was hardly just grounds for impeachment.  The Republican impeachment of Clinton certainly did involve corruption, but the corruption was theirs, not his.  It was, in fact, the worst partisan abuse of Congressional power in the history of the country, carried out through a mixture of revenge for Nixon's removal, and the now open belief that nobody but Republicans has a right to be President or to run Congress, regardless of the views of the American people, and regardless of what it takes to prevent Democrats from participating in the government.

4. Trump

I'm not going to go over a history which we all know too well.  I will just say that Trump has committed literally hundreds of impeachable acts, on a virtually daily basis, in the three years that he has been President.  These range from "minor" acts like his 14,000 lies, through endless self dealing, obstruction and perversion of justice, appointing people to positions for the sole purpose of frustrating established law (a Constitutional violation itself,) witness intimidation, ignoring established law, and all the way up to clearly treasonous behavior, as he has over and over again favored the interests of a foreign dictator over the security of the country.  This is a record of criminality that dwarfs the combined misdeeds of every other President in our history.  It is laughable that Republicans can ignore all of this, but they have set themselves on a course to do exactly that.

In summation, we have one President, Richard Nixon, who was forced to resign due to a series of actions that could be regarded as rising to the level of corruption, one who was impeached over a very legitimate issue of his misuse of power, and one who was impeached in an act of Republican partisan revenge.  There is no precedent for the malignant behavior of Trump, and the notion that his conduct does not justify removal is in itself a blow directed at the mechanisms of democracy.

It is an absolutely abysmal act of political malfeasance that, given that the Tories have pushed Britain to the brink of complete political and economic collapse, that the left could not find a better candidate to run against them than the utterly useless Jeremy Corbyn.  Britain and the world are going to pay a massive price for this act of partisan irresponsibility.

Well, that's my feeling anyway.  I don't think I need say any more.

The Deal Maker Strikes Again

The world's Greatest Deal Maker has done it again- made one of the most consequential diplomatic deals of the century.

No, not between the United States and another country; the deal he has brought about is between two other countries.

Here are the details of this epochal agreement, which has been almost totally ignored by the mainstream press, while they have been busy declaring the impeachment of the President for extortion and bribery a boring snooze fest.  From the Telegraph (yes, people in England do seem to have noticed this story:)

"China signs defence agreement with South Korea as US angers Seoul with demand for $5bn troop payment... 

The defence ministers of South Korea and China have agreed to develop their security ties to ensure stability in north-east Asia, the latest indication that Washington’s long-standing alliances in the region are fraying.  

An editorial in Monday’s edition of The Korea Times warned that the security alliance between (the US and South Korea) “may fall apart due to Washington’s blatantly excessive demands”.  

Mr Trump has previously threatened to withdraw US troops if his demands are not met, with the editorial accusing the president of regarding the Korea-US mutual defence treaty “as a property deal to make money”.

The vast majority of Koreans agree, with a recent survey by the Korea Institute for National Reunification showing that 96 per cent of people are opposed to Seoul paying more for the US military presence."

Get it? One of our oldest and most vital defense agreements in Asia is being thrown in the trash can by Trump, and our former steadfast friend is now turning to its long term enemy for help; an action which must bring a glow of happiness to Russia and China.  This is a catastrophic failure, the frightening implications of which we cannot afford to ignore.  It is one more time that a former ally has been forced to turn to our enemies for a defense pact; the same thing happened in Ukraine.

"Daniel Pinkston, a professor of international relations at the Seoul campus of Troy University, was more blunt in his assessment. 

“It’s just extortion”, he told The Telegraph. “It’s little more than a mob boss going around and demanding protection money."

Just like Ukraine, as I said.  This man is nothing but a criminal in thrall to a foreign dictator, and he is openly working to destroy our country.  Meanwhile, every member of his party works constantly to devise some sort of lie that makes this treachery seem okay.

We are on the edge of a precipice, with one leg over the edge, and this story is being almost totally ignored.  It is hard to imagine a situation more terrible for our country, and most Americans will never even hear about it, let alone understand its significance or care. God help us.

Removing Trump

The new oval office?

We hear over and over again that, if the Democratic House impeaches Trump, he cannot be removed from office, because it would be impossible to get 20 Republican Senators to stop cowering in fear of the deranged base they spent decades creating, in order to provide the two thirds majority needed to ditch him.

This is almost certainly true, but all is not lost.  As usual, this argument comes from people who talk about the Constitution without having really read it very thoroughly.

Here is what the Constitution actually says about the Senate trial that follows impeachment:

Article I, Section 3, Clauses 6 and 7:
The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two-thirds of the Members present"

Note that the vote required is not two thirds of all senators, but two thirds of those who are present.

So here is my plan:  Let the Senate, including all of the many Republicans that want nothing to do with this idiot, vote to finally honor Trump with a gigantic military parade, perhaps celebrating his glorious, total victory over the Kurds, who have always been our enemies.

Something like this would be appropriate, I think.

Make it clear that any Republican that does not come to the parade will be chewed alive by Trump's base.  Then, in tacit agreement with Mitch McConnell, a Senate vote to convict will be held during the parade, allowing Trump to be kicked out of office by a unanimous vote of those Senators who are present, all of which will be Democrats; at which point, Trump could be frog marched off of the reviewing stand and thrown in the street, and all the troops in the parade can go home and enjoy the rest of the afternoon with their families.

Cue the deafening screeching and yelling by the Republicans, which may go on for years; but who gives a damn as long as Trump is gone?

Of course, nothing will stop Trump from declaring the next day that he is still running to be re-elected, like it or not.  Some may be tempted to point out that the Constitution also says:

"Judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor"

At this point it is necessary for me to digress and repeat a few lines from a scene in "My Little Chickadee" in which W. C. Fields tries to lure a rube into playing poker with him.

Rube:  "Poker...but isn't that gambling?"
Fields:  "Not the way I play it, no."

Trump's answer to the Constitution, and I must confess that he is likely on firm legal ground here, is that as long as he is in the White House, being President is not an "office of honor."  Might work, who knows?

The memos show the parties are fundamentally at odds over everything from key pieces of evidence to the legitimacy of the process."
I heard the same thing on NPR this morning, which did a long segment on the "competing narratives" about impeachment coming from our two political parties.

Neither one of these miserable excuses for journalists thought it worth mentioning that one of these "narratives" is true and the other, as they all know damned well, is a compendium of vicious lies. 

And that is what we are going to get this time around, just as we have had stuffed down our throats every election for decades.  One side is telling the truth and the other side is lying; but that is of no significance.  Maybe Trump is the bad guy, maybe it's Biden and Hillary. Who can say?

Donald Trump was today fined two million dollars because his "charity" diverted a large part of the money it gathered (some, for example, supposedly for kids with cancer) into the pockets of himself and his family.  The judge in the case determined that the money should go to a number of charities, which were selected as part of the court process.

Trump's statement about this humiliation?

"I am therefore happy to donate $2 million to the following worthy charities..."

He donated the money!  Not, he was fined two million dollars for criminal activity; he donated the money!  It was a noble thing that he did, getting fined two million dollars for an abominable criminal act.  And he's happy to be fined the two million dollars.  He's proud of his generosity!

Was there ever a more degraded human?

Of course not; they just have to amp up the lying:

Don't crimes against humanity count as real crimes, if they are committed by Republicans?  Or will it just be too confusing to ordinary Americans if they are confused by adding this act of bestial brutality to the charges of extortion and treason?

Let Senate Republicans vote against holding him responsible for this atrocity.

A Week to Remember, Indeed

That's their story and they are sticking to it.  Kimberley Guilfoyle at Town Hall, assessing the last week's political news:
"In 365 Days, It’s Weeks Like This One That Voters Will Remember"
That's for sure, what with the impeachment vote, and the release of transcripts conclusively demonstrating that Trump is a criminal.  No, that's not what Kimberley was talking about?
"The week started in the morning of Sunday, October 27th, as President Trump took to the podium in the White House’s Diplomatic Reception Room to announce that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed in an American-led military operation...However, even more disappointing than the media twisting themselves in knots to avoid saying anything that might be interpreted as praise for President Trump was the deafening silence from Democrats. They were seemingly unable to acknowledge that the Commander-in-Chief — even in this just one specific instance — made the world safer."
False, of course.  Democrats were very happy about the elimination of Al Baghdadi, in contrast, you might note this statement, from October 2012:
"Stop congratulating Obama for killing Bin Laden. The Navy Seals killed Bin Laden....Why don't we ask the Navy SEALs who killed Bin Laden? They don't seem to be happy with Obama claiming credit. All he did is say O.K."
Who said that?  Who do you think?

And then, this event that will be eternally stamped in the minds of the American people:
"the president went immediately from celebrating a major national security victory on Sunday to visiting Chicago on Monday to honor law enforcement at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police."
He gave a speech to some policemen!  Amazing! But wait, there's more:
"On Wednesday, President Trump’s administration took an important step to help Americans suffering from substance abuse by launching FindTreatment.gov, a website that will enable visitors to access a database tailored to addressing their specific needs and treatments."
The government launched a website!  Again, this is the kind of decisive action to meet the nation's concerns that will be honored for years.

Now, let's think...did anything else happen in the last week that Americans might recall a year from now?
"In an almost tiring week of winning for America, the Democrats had to sully our enjoyment of America’s greatness with a meaningless, partisan charade on the floor of the House of Representatives."
I.e. they voted to begin the process of kicking him out of office for being a criminal and a traitor.  Hardly worth even noticing.  Well, that was the week that was. 

The article finishes with this disclaimer:
"Kimberly Guilfoyle is a Senior Advisor to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc."

An Electoral Solution

We all know that the electoral college tilts the balance of power in the selection of the President in favor of small States, and consequently in favor of the Republican party.  We are living through the disaster that this undemocratic feature of the Constitution has created.  I hardly need tell anyone that this is true.  And yet, we all know that it would prove virtually impossible in our current political environment to change the Constitution to allow Presidents to be selected by popular vote.

What is this flaw in the Constitution that allows Republicans to maintain an unfair advantage? Well, here is the text, from Article 2, section 1:

"Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress"

The problem is that representatives are apportioned according to population, while Senators are not; resulting in, for example, every person who votes in Wyoming having 69 times the power of everyone who votes in California; a gross injustice.

Here is my proposal:  An amendment be passed that limits the quantity of electors to the number of representatives, by simply eliminating the words "Senators and."  This will have the effect of moving the Presidential election process so it corresponds much more closely to the will of the population, without any major change in the Constitution.

Of course, Republicans will scream their heads off to stop this, because they benefit from the current law's unfairness, but I suspect it would be far easier to muster support for this elimination of two words from the Constitution, than to eliminate the electoral college altogether, and my proposal would have largely the same effect of moving to a popular vote for President.

Before I begin, I would like to mention the following fact:  Most of you have heard of the abominable driving of freshman Congresswoman Katie Hill from the House by the publication of revenge porn pictures of her supplied by a bastard of an ex-husband.  I just want to tell you that these pictures were originally published by Red State, a blog whose lies and hate have made it a staple of Wingnut Wrapup throughout its entire existence.  Anyway, on we go:

See, that's what is important.  They booed him- that means nothing.  That they stopped, well...

So he used wounded veterans as human shields, which proves what a great patriot he is.

Timothy, I know this probably never occurred to you, but the Russians are the ones we are trying to keep our secrets from.  Once they have them, they don't need to leak them.  By the way, just to be clear, the claim about Democratic leaders leaking things is a total lie, told like so many Republican lies, to distract from the endless leaking of their own administration.

That's nice.  It wasn't enough that Comey destroyed himself helping to elect Trump.  He wouldn't debase himself further, after Trump thanked him by lying about him, firing him and trying to humiliate him in public.  No, three years later, they are still smearing him.

These provisions concern active duty military only, which McRaven is not.  To engineer a punishment of him for violating them would constitute a clear step toward Stalinism.  By the way, article 134 forbids statements "disloyal to the United States," not "disloyal to Donald Trump."  I am sure that change in the wording is coming soon if we do nothing.
