My Experience With the Death Panels

Well, the death panels are back.  The lying, corrupt, hateful liars who make up the Republican party and its sucker followers are screaming their heads off again, repeating the biggest, most malicious lie of 2010.

I try to avoid anything personal on my blog, because I want it to be about something more important than me.  I am going to make an exception this time, because this is a lie too abominable to let it stand unchallenged.

Over the last few years, my mother, my wife's mother and her aunt have died, all in their mid-90's.  When our parents were dealing with their parents' mortality, this would have been remarkable.  It was a rare thing for people to live beyond 90, and experience deterioration of a kind that would have been very uncommon a few decades ago.  Now it is becoming a frequent occurrence.

We really knew almost nothing about this process and how to deal with it.  This is where the "death panels" come in.  Thanks to our government, there were people there to help us understand what was happening, and what was possible to do about it.  Without them, I don't have a clue how we would have been able to make many of the difficult decisions we had to make.  Furthermore, there was the hospice program, again brought to us by our government, and the subject of endless right wing abuse.  What did this program mean to our parents?  It meant that they were able to die at home, not in a hospital or nursing home.  It meant that they were able to live out the end stage of their lives in some semblance of dignity.

Dying with dignity is, apparently, one more thing that the Republican party intends to reserve for the rich.

There is simply no end to the barbarism of the right in this country. When common human decency interferes with the working of their greed, their inhumanity is boundless.  On behalf of my mother, my wife's mother and aunt, the 88 year old lady next door who is entering this stage of her life, and all of the other people like them, who are no longer able to speak for themselves, I will never forget the existence of the miserable excuses for human beings that exist in this country, who care not a shred for anything but themselves, and who will gladly tolerate any amount of suffering in others if they think they can find a way to profit from other people's misery.

Jingoism Gone Wild

Doesn't this comfort you?

"The Republicans taking over the House of Representatives next week will read the constitution out loud in its entirety. It's something that has never been done in the chamber's 221 year history."

That will really contribute a lot to solving the problems which the same Republicans caused, right?  What a bunch of jackasses. I can't wait to see what other ways they find to avoid dealing with the real issues.

Christine O'Donnell Purged

The following story is making the rounds today:

"(AP)  BALTIMORE - A person with knowledge of the investigation says federal authorities have opened a criminal probe of Delaware Republican Christine O'Donnell to determine if the former Senate candidate broke the law by using campaign money to pay personal expenses."

Funny that the people in the press care nothing for the massive, virtually hidden, buckets of money from multinational corporations, and almost certainly from foreign governments, used to buy political candidates today, but they sure have time to savage this pathetic losing candidate for what is undoubtedly an extremely minor matter.

My take? The Republican party, despite doing everything it could to help this woman win their nomination (she rose a state record $7.3 million for her campaign) realizes that she made a total fool out of herself, and they are going to make sure that she is destroyed before she can humiliate them again.  They didn't care about her idiotic views as long as they thought she could win, and were happy to give her a platform to air her insanity nationally, but now they are determined to see to it that she never has a role in politics again.

It has been clear since the nineties what a loon Christine O'Donnell was.  That was just fine with the Republicans- they would have been happy to foist her off on the country like many another brain dead Republican legislator.  But a losing loon?  Off with her head.

Quote For the Day

From Talking Points Memo:

"It's really almost criminal what they do with our president...There seems to be no shame or anything. They call him all kinds of names all day long, saying he's doing certain things that he's not. It's just a big old political game that I don't want to be part of."

-Merle Haggard

Here's someone who bought the lies until he met the guy and discovered the truth.  Well, when you are a legendary country singer you get a chance to find out for yourself that you have been misled.  What will ever suffice to do that for the rest of the teabaggers out there?

Who Would Have Ever Suspected?

This, from Crooks and Liars today:

"A study at University College London in the UK has found that conservatives' brains have larger amygdalas than the brains of liberals. Amygdalas are responsible for fear and other "primitive" emotions. At the same time, conservatives' brains were also found to have a smaller anterior cingulate -- the part of the brain responsible for courage and optimism."

No comment needed.

The Angry Geezer- Still At It

God, there's no way to shut up the Maverick.

"(An old political associate) said "it hurts" McCain to vote against legislation like the Dream Act after years of working on reform but said the senator felt betrayed when Latinos overwhelmingly supported Obama in 2008. "When you carry that fight at great sacrifice year after year and then you are abandoned during the biggest fight of your life, it has to have some sort of effect on you," he said."

I see, John.  You only represent the interests of people who vote for you, and anyone who disagrees with you can drop dead.  In fact, you will even vote against legislation that you previously supported, just to screw them for not sending you to the White House.  That's the spirit of our founding fathers, yes sir.

Another quote from this guy:

" McCain would be more helpful if the White House reached out to him, but "they haven't talked to him at all."

The way the Bush White House reached out to Gore and Kerry, huh?  And by the way, maybe Obama might have reached out to McCain if he hadn't devoted himself from the day he lost the presidency, to smearing and obstructing Obama at every turn.

McCain is not a loyal American.  He is a petulant, spoiled, rich, self-serving liar without a shred of real principle; i.e. the ideal Republican.

Your Vote Counts

The people over at Sadly No! are devoting themselves to a really good cause, and I think we should help them out.

Every year, some pathetic idiot who calls himself the "Gay Patriot" sponsors a contest to name someone the "Grande Conservative Blogress Diva."  And no, I didn't make that name up.  Anyway, the Sadly No! people are urging us all to go over there and vote for Robin of Berkeley, one of the most deranged wingnut writers on the web today, and one of the candidates for this prestigious award.  Faithful readers (ha) of Wingnut Wrapup will be familiar with Robin of Berkeley, as she has frequently been the subject of Green Eagle's ridicule.

Currently, Robin is in the lead.  Please take a few seconds to go over there and make sure that she stays ahead.  She is such a fitting spokesperson for the wingnut right.

Wingnut Wrapup

I'm having a little internet problem, but I thought I'd whip out something in the limited window I have here.  I want to note that I have, over the last year, cut down on the number of sources for Wingnut Wrapup, because right wingers follow their leaders, even when picking their own variety of insanity; consequently they all pretty much spew the same garbage.  I think I have gone a little too far, so I am going to add some "award winning" (i.e. particularly offensive) blogs to my list.  I'll keep you posted.  Anyway, here's today's load of rubbish:

Michelle Malkin, Town Hall:  "Internet Access is Not a Civil Right"

Not when it stands in the way of some rich person to make a whole lot of money, anyway.

Janice Crouse, Town Hall:   "Childhood Obesity and National Security"

The Republican party today- for obesity, against  security.  Sounds about right to me.

Floyd and Mary Beth Brown, Town Hall:  "New Stimulus Will Damage Recovery"

Floyd and Mary Beth?  Is that like Bonnie and Clyde?  Well, here are some other articles that these economic geniuses might like to consider writing:  "Eating- the sure way to guarantee that you starve,"  "Don't breathe- it only lets the air out of your lungs,"  or maybe "Do what the Republicans say- it's failed every time we've tried it for the last hundred years, so just by the laws of probability, it's got to work this time, right?"

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Sunday Night Surprise… US Senate UNANIMOUSLY Passes the Food Safety Bill...GOP Abandons Tea Party–Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans UNANIMOUSLY agreed tonight to give the government more power over the food industry.

Are you freaking kidding me?"

The abomination- the Senate voted to protect our food supply.  How dare they?  And I couldn't agree with Jim more that this is a slap in the face of the teabaggers, who sure as hell didn't elect Republicans to protect people.  Not if they aren't rich, anyway.  They'll pay for this.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "She Can’t Help It… Nicolle Wallace Attacks Sarah Palin Again: She Has “Multiple Flaws” & “Obvious Deficiencies”

How can this monster claim that Sarah Palin has deficiencies?  Sarah Palin is perfect.  She is a new American saint, whose every act comes right from God, and who cannot posess any inadequacy.  How dare this woman Wallace impugn the perfection of Sarah Palin?  After all, didn't someone once say, "We have all fallen short of the glory of God, and Sarah Palin?"

World Net Daily:  'Tron' tells spiritual story of Satan and salvation"

And if you buy that one, maybe you'd like to read my 7,000 word dissertation on "Snakes on a Plane- a Monument of Moral Philosophy"

Denis Prager, Town Hall:  "What Do Men Want?"

Really, I don't think we need Dennis to explain that to us.  As if he would have a clue.

And here's today's best wingnut paranoid delusion:

Astute Bloggers:  "The repeal of DADT passed because the USA was blackmailed by the source of Wikileaks: they told the feds that they would leak THE BIG ONE if it didn't pass this session...THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES!"

There may be no coincidences, but there sure are a lot of stupid jackasses in the world, huh?

Ann Coulter, Town Hall:  "Scrooge was a Liberal"

Scrooge- a greedy, old, white, rich, well-connected businessman who was filled with fury at the notion of doing anything for the poor- the very definition of a liberal.  Do these people say thing like this just to train their followers to believe whatever they're told?

Mike McDaniel, Pajamas Media:  "Iran Just Shipped Missiles to Venezuela.  A massive security threat just blossomed, and you'd be hard-pressed to find an MSM or administration official who cares."

Maybe they're the same missiles that Ronald Reagan shipped to Iran in the first place.  None of you guys thought that was a security threat.  Funny thing, huh?

Town Hall:  "New GOP Wave Pushes Pro Growth Agenda in States"

And exactly how do they intend to accomplish that?

"Having won big in the fall elections, Republicans preparing to take over statehouses around the country are proposing to cut corporate taxes, weaken union clout and rewrite laws on discrimination, whistle-blowers and injured workers to the benefit of employers."

That's pro growth alright- growth of the wealth of the rich.  As for the rest of us, keep your mouths shut and don't get sick, or you're screwed.

Bob Owens, Confederate Yankee:  "Sure, She Says For Us to Diet...but why do Michelle Antoinette's actions always amount to "let them eat cake?"

What the hell is that even supposed to mean?

And Now, a notable achievment in the art of "if Congress gives you lemons, make lemonade:"

Bryan Fischer, Renew America:  "If a homosexual signs up now, he's stuck with the whole magilla. Go to your superior officer now and say, hey, I'm a flaming homosexual, I hate the army, let me out of here, the superior officer will say, tough darts, those days are gone. You're stuck with us now, Nancy-boy.

So, who's sorry now?  They enlist, they're stuck with the whole program just like everybody else.  In other words, they had preferential treatment and special privileges, a status and privileges and an exit strategy denied to their honest and straight counterparts. And homosexuals just bargained it away...Bottom line: be careful what you ask for. You just may get it."

I don't think it's possible to make Bryan look any more stupid and vicious that that, so I'll just leave it there.

Moe Lane, Red State:  "The *true* John Conyers scandal...Background: back over Thanksgiving weekend John Conyers III (the son of Rep. John Conyers) reported a theft of computers and concert tickets from the car that he was using.  The problem?  John Conyers III was using the car unlawfully: it was leased to his father’s Congressional office as an official vehicle, and Conyers was not using it in an official capacity...The true scandal is that we’re only hearing about this now."

Corruption Democratic style- Conyers let his kid use the car.  The outrage!  Throw him in jail!

Enough.  Good bye.

It's Almost Over

Well, thank heaven.  The War on Christmas is almost over this year, and the Republicans can get back to their War on America.

I Was Wrong

I have to say that my dire predictions about how little would be accomplished in the lame duck congressional session were wrong.  Obama and the Congress delivered on far more than we had any reason, based on their previous performance, to expect.  Good for them, and I hope it reminds them of what can be accomplished when they show a little fight, particularly given the fact that the American people are overwhelmingly behind the Democrats on these issues.

The Republican "momentum" from the recent election, so carefully built up by the mainstream press, has been squandered already by their unreasonable obstructionism.  That's shouldn't be that surprising to anyone who remembers the Gingrich days in Congress, and how Bill Clinton mangled them when they tried the same tricks. Apparently, however, Republicans have as little memory of that history as they do, for example, of why we fought the Civil War, or exactly which party supported civil rights.

Now the Democrats have a chance to see to it that the Republicans don't run roughshod over the country in the next two years.  Let's hope they keep on with their current behavior.

Seasons Greetings from the Green One

And I mean, the REAL green one:

What would the holiday season be without a little good will from the big guy?

The Big Stories, World Net Daily Style

So, as it's the end of the year, it's time for everybody to compile their top ten lists, right?  And why should World Net Daily be any different?  They are conducting their annual poll of the most neglected news stories of the year.  Isn't that exciting?  I won't bother to provide a link to the site, as you have to register with them in order to vote, and registering with WND is, in my opinion, only marginally different than being a registered member of NAMBLA.  What really interested me about this whole exercise in idiocy was the list they provided of the ten winners from last year's poll.  So, here they are, as a sort of little Christmas present, of course with Green Eagle's analysis of the press malfeasance that resulted in their inclusion on this list:

1. Evidence the Fort Hood mass murderer was an Islamic terrorist acting as part of a larger, radical Islamic movement

Well, given as how the "evidence" that this lunatic had anything to do with a "larger, radical Islamic movement" has proven to be totally nonexistent, leaving nothing to report on, I suppose we can understand why this one made the list.  Still, it was a good opportunity to spread more lies about Muslims, so I guess it was a big missed opportunity

 2. The Tea Party movement, including the 9/12 Washington, D.C., rally

The teabaggers got too little attention?  Oh, come on, grow up.

 3. The "Climategate" leaked e-mails and the devastating, smoking-gun proof they offer of corrupt and grossly politicized junk science

Well, they did offer " devastating, smoking-gun proof" that right wingers will both tell and believe any lie, no matter how preposterous, if it justifies them in opposing government spending which serves no other purpose than the miserable excuse of saving our grandchildrens' lives.  So the press should have paid a lot more attention to the idea that a major part of the world's scientists are engaged in a massive fraud, for no discernible purpose whatever.

 4. Obama's constitutional eligibility to be president

Well, no World Net Daily list of things that don't get enough attention would be complete without savaging the press for not giving this ridiculous lie more credence.

 5. The true impact on Americans of Obama's health-care agenda

Well, I agree there.  Republicans have systematically deluded the American people with a billion dollar campaign to spread lies about this moderate initiative, and the press damned well should have made that clear.  Why don't I think that's what World Net Daily readers had in mind?

 6. The true impact on the U.S. and world economies of cap-and-trade, should it become law

The true impact, which is almost nothing, as far as anyone knows, except requiring corporations to pay for the damage they cause.  Once again, I don't think this is what they had in mind over there at WND.

 7. The true cause of the subprime meltdown that led to the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

Let me guess:  It was Democrats pandering to Black people.

8. Obama's czars and other radical appointees

Apparently, the story here is that Democratic presidents are not allowed to appoint anyone to do anything, and the press should have made that clear.  That's an interesting notion.

 9. The Obama administration pushed for the legally ousted Honduran president to be put back in office and also called for a halt to Jewish residential construction in the Holy Land after the president insisted during the Iran protests that he could not interfere in another country's politics.

First of all, the legally elected Honduran president was ousted in a military coup.  One of the truly neglected stories of last year was the American right, virtually to a man, siding with a military dictatorship rather than a democratically elected leader.  This was a real opportunity to examine exactly what kind of government they think we should have here at home.

Second, as a former resident of Israel, I'm damned sick of these perverted, racist right wingers blabbing away about something they know nothing about, and which seems to play some sort of a major role in their sick, apocalyptic fantasies.

10. The exposure of ACORN's criminality by a freelance undercover probe and the many criminal charges against the community organizing group tied to President Obama and the Democratic Party

Right wingers forced 23 State and Federal investigations of ACORN.  ACORN was exonerated in every single one of those investigations.  Then they had a sick Republican liar compile some phony smears of ACORN, which World Net Daily refers to as " a freelance undercover probe."   This person has since been caught doing the same thing on two other occasions, but is still frequently to be seen on the right wing blogs I follow.  Well, given World Net Daily's notion of what truth entails, I guess we can't be surprised that they stand behind this malignant jackass.

Well, there you go.  The main thing that World Net Daily's readers would like to see in the news is more lies.  You'd think they would be getting enough of that to satisfy anyone, right there at home.

A Good Day for The Country

Talking Points Memo has the tale:

"Today in the Senate, they passed (by unanimous consent) the defense authorization bill that Republicans held up over objections to repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell just two short weeks ago; they passed by a voice vote the 9/11 First Responders Health bill that had been the subject of so much drama and debate; and they passed by a 71-26 vote the START nuclear treaty with Russia despite Republican objections to that as well. "

Finally, the Republicans realized what sort of impression they were creating, and did the right thing on all of these clearly moral issues.  Not that they did it for the right reason, of course.  I am interested in what this Republican collapse presages for their threats to shut down the government when they take over the House next month.  We all knew that their attempt to do this in the nineties destroyed Newt Gingrich and the contract on America.  They all seem to think things will be different this time around...after the last couple of weeks, I'm not too sure about that.

And by the way, look at what Democrats can accomplish when they show a little toughness.

The Victory that Wasn't

I see Rachel Maddow almost giddy over the passing of the START treaty.  Like lots of other liberals, she has already succeeded in convincing herself that this represents a tremendous victory over the Republicans.

Wrong.  All we have seen here is that the Republican party can tell when it is on the losing end of a public relations battle.  They gave up on Don't Ask Don't Tell, because they think it is going to be a great issue to rile up their base in 2012 (they're right) and they gave up on the START treaty because even the endless collaboration of the press could not disguise the fact that they had placed party loyalty above our national security in the most craven way imaginable.  So they will have Lisa Murkowski (who they undoubtedly hate because she defeated one of their selected teabaggers) and a few other Republicans, vote for the treaty, not because it is essential to maintaining world nuclear stability, but because their bankrupt political calculus tells them that it's in their own best interests.

Isn't it too late for us to fool ourselves into thinking that Republicans give a damn about this country, or will lift a finger to do anything that is not in the immediate, short term interest of the multinational corporations who are their real constituency?

This Time It's (Still) Personal

Today marks the 150th anniversary of the secession of South Carolina, precipitating the Civil War, or as many in the south still call it, "The War of Evil Yankees Lettin' Our N*****s Loose to Rape Our Women."  In an interesting article in the Guardian today, Eric Foner has this to say:

"A century and a half after the civil war, many white Americans, especially in the South, seem to take the idea that slavery caused the war as a personal accusation. The point, however, is not to condemn individuals ..."

Sorry, Eric, you are writing for a British publication and maybe you are not here to see what is really going on in the U. S. these days.  The point is exactly to condemn individuals who still want to lie away the abomination that the confederacy was, and in all too many cases, reserve for themselves the right to retain the hatred of others that made the toleration of slavery possible.  Mr. Foner himself points out:

"The new nation's "cornerstone", declared Confederate Vice-President Alexander H Stephens, was the principle "that slavery, subordination to the superior race" was the "natural and moral condition" of black Americans."

And as long as a significant portion of the white people still living in this country continue to defend such views, the fight against their racism is and will be personal.

A Change of Heart?

Can this be true?  The noxious hater Bryan Fischer over at Renew America is finally starting to see the light?

"Benedict Arnold Republicans destroy military and our national security"

So, he has finally realized the abomination of squandering our military might in a failed war of aggression, or maybe he is disgusted by the Republicans' willingness to severely damage our national security and that of the whole world, by destroying our nuclear inspection agreement with the Russians, in order to score cheap political points.  Or could it be that he finally realizes what the consequences are when Republicans demolish major CIA assets in the middle east, in order to get cheap revenge on a guy who wouldn't lie for them.  Whatever it is, Bryan, congratulations for finally coming out and telling the truth!

Oh, wait...

"We are now stuck with sexual deviants serving openly in the U.S. military because of turncoat Republican senators..."

Never mind. Silly me.

Have the Democrats Let Themselves Be Conned Again?

Well, everyone on the left is just so excited about the victory in repealing DADT.  Leave it to Green Eagle to see the dreadful side to this.  I think the Democratic party has just fallen prey to another bunch of sucker bait from Republicans.

Here is how I think this is going to pay off in 2012.  The Republican party is going to run on the following:  The Democrats couldn't deliver a nuclear arms control treaty with the Russians, they couldn't deliver a thing to deal with illegal aliens, they didn't even get a budget enacted properly.  In fact they didn't do a damned thing with their majority except pander to the homosexuals.  That's all they really care about- destroying the moral fiber of our country to make people more dependent on government, and that's all that they could muster the determination to get through congress.

Forget that it's virtually one hundred percent the fault of the Republican party that none of the things listed above were passed- believe me, no respectable beltway commentator is going to mention that.  No, the Democrats are the party of gays, and that's it.

And the ultimate proof of this is that Joe Lieberman, who lives to hurt Democrats, was in the forefront on this issue.  You watch- I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

The Council of Conservative Citizens, commenting on the choice of a black man to play one of the Norse gods in the upcoming movie Thor:

"It’s not enough that Marvel attacks conservative values and promotes the left-wing, now mythological Gods must be re-invented with black skin.  It seems that Marvel Studios believes that white people should have nothing that is unique to themselves."

Don't worry so much, Conservative guys. White people still have something that is unique to themselves.  They are uniquely stupid.

A New Low?

Here's a story from the Huffington Post, via Daily Kos, that puts a new light on the vile pack of degenerates who make up the Republican party:

"On Thursday, the House took up the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act of 2010. The bill would ensure that child marriage is recognized as a human rights violation, and develop comprehensive strategies to prevent such marriages around the world. The legislation seemed likely to garner strong bipartisan support in Congress, and in the Senate, it did. But last night, the bill was voted down in the House by Republicans who argued the bill is too costly and could lead to increased abortions -- gripes the measure's supporters say have no basis in reality and are just excuses to kill the popular bill."

This behavior is loathsome in the extreme, and the Republicans manage to get away with it over and over again, because our mainstream press will not hold them accountable for the most disgusting behavior.  There is, apparently, no point at which the behavior of Republican leaders becomes so bestial that it is appropriate for the American people to know about it.

In recent weeks, the Republican party has managed to endanger the safety of the whole world by their political games with the START treaty, manipulate the hapless Obama into giving the hyper-rich hundreds of billions of dollars in return for any sort of constructive economic stimulus, engage in an orgy of hatred over the DADT repeal, do everything they can to prevent an adult approach to the country's economic problems, deny health coverage to 9-11 responders who have suffered medical problems as a result of their heroism, fight for the right of gangs, the mentally ill, and Mexican criminals to buy guns at will, and generally work openly to damage the country in order to hurt Obama and the Democrats.  Yet, no one in the mainstream press (except maybe Keith, Rachel and Ed Schultz) has the slightest interest in reporting on this mass sedition, which is by far the worst threat facing our country today.  And that is why we are sinking into a third world morass while the rest of the world moves on.

Wingnut Wrapup

Someone must have put something in their pop-tarts this morning.  They're really up in arms:

World Net Daily:  "Obama's urgent treaty push called 'contempt of Congress'   Analysts fear START doc holds something prez wants concealed"

Called contempt by whom?  Why, World Net Daily's founder, Joseph Farah, of course.  And by the way, the text of the treaty has been available for eight months, so if Obama wants something concealed, he must have written it in really little letters.

Joseph Farah, World Net Daily:  "Time to quit the U.S. military...As much as I respect and admire the U.S. military as an institution, I would find myself actively encouraging men and women to leave – in droves."

Better to leave the United States helpless against foreign attack than have gays in the military.  Boy, these conservatives are so patriotic and so dedicated to defending our country.

Farah continues with his sick ravings:

"After all, this is simply a plan being orchestrated by a regime that loathes the military and seeks to destroy it."

What, you mean destroy it, like, by sending it to fight in a useless war of aggression, squandering its resources and killing its soldiers for no decent purpose whatever?  That kind of destroying the military?  Yeah, now that you mention it, Joseph, I seem to remember that happening not too long ago.  Whoever would do a thing like that must really loathe the military, that's for sure.   Damn that Obama.  Or was it Clinton?  I can't quite remember.

Victoria Jackson, World Net Daily:  "Liberals want to poison water to prevent life. Conservatives want to pour out Living Water to propagate eternal life. Why would I want to be a liberal?!"

World Net Daily Exclusive:  "Senator says Dems pushing 'every kind of liberal agenda'

That's their job. Deal with it.  By the way, I only wish it were true.

Bonnie Alba, Renew America:  "This is the annual season of Anti-Christmas sentiment. The naysayers feel they shouldn't have to put up with this traditional nonsense, so they intimidate by threatening law suits"

Bonnie describes herself as a "politically incorrect researcher-writer."  I think "factually incorrect" might be more to the point.

Jerome Corsi, World Net Daily:  "Obama quietly erasing borders...Dem administration advancing 'North American Union' agenda"

Well, in all fairness, the Republicans are erasing borders too.  The borders between reality and paranoid delusion.  Of course, this is the same Jerome Corsi who claimed that the highly decorated war hero John Kerry was a coward, while the deserter Bush was a hero.

Sher Zieve, Renew America:  "The new omnibus spending bill now being proposed as the last "shove it down their unthankful throats and choke 'em to death" thrown together and not read by the Marxist/Leninist Democrat leaders, is designed to destroy the rest of life as we had known it in the USA...The new American Revolution looms closer every day. People can only take tyranny for so long before screaming NO MORE and acting upon it. Do you now hear the people sing Congress and Obama? Do you?"

Actually, I don't even know the tune to "Congress and Obama," so I don't know if people are singing it.  By any chance is that the flip side of "let the eagle soar?"

Sher, you really have to get a grip on yourself.

Keith Riler, American Thinker:  "As tempting as it is to view the machinations of the left in masterfully calculated Dr. Evil terms, today's progressive is better-understood as a ranting teenager."

Well, that's not so bad.  You guys are better understood as a three year old screaming for more cookies.

Thomas Lifson, American Thinker:  "A royal snub for the Obamas...Michelle Obama may be ruing the day Barry sent back the bust of Winston Churchill. The Obamas are not being invited to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton"

Well, first of all, the Churchill bust thing never happened.  It's just one more malicious myth from the right.  And second, I don't think Obama is going to waste too much time worrying about not being invited to a wedding, since if he did go, the right would attack his "elitism" for months.

Now, today's medal for maturity in foreign policy:

And aren't you proud of yourselves?

And finally, a wonderful history lesson, from our friend Henry Makow:

"paralytic polio was a scourge prior to the 1950's (polio vaccine first arrived in 1955) and probably everyone in my generation can remember the March of Dimes campaigns with Eleanor Roosevelt leading the way. Well, today the scourge of "natural paralytic polio" has vanished due to unknown factors...Epidemiological studies show that polio mortality declined by 82% prior to 1956 in England and Wales. The same pattern emerged in France. The vaccine had nothing to do with any of it."

Of course not.  The fact that polio declined by 82% at the same time the vaccine was released means nothing.  Mr. Makow claims that there were mass deaths from the polio vaccine, which were all covered up (as usual.)  The coverup must have been a good one, because there is virtually no record of anyone dying from the polio vaccine.  It will, I am sure, not surprise you that this whole sordid chapter in human history seems, in some way never clearly explained by Mr. Makow, to have something to do with the fact that the inventors of the two major forms of polio virus were Jewish, and therefore it is obvious that the whole thing must be an evil plot to destroy everyone.

The Worst Majority Leader in Decades Fails Again

From Talking Points Memo, although it is all over the news, of course:

"Late last night, Harry Reid's plan to get the federal government funded through the end of the fiscal year went up in flames, burning months and months of work by Senate appropriators and their staffs. To avert a government shutdown, Reid agreed to work out a federal funding plan with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell..."

Remind you of any other Democratic behavior lately? Harry Reid collapsed just like Obama did over the tax cuts for the rich, and here, at the end of the two years when the Democrats could have done virtually anything that these weak leaders wanted to, we are left with virtually nothing.  The people that WE worked for and paid for have now openly determined that it is a lot easier to just give in and collaborate with a party that is looting the country, rather than stand up for what they know is in everyone's best interest.

And don't tell me about the sixty vote thing.  Funny, that never stops Republicans from doing whatever they want, when they are in control.  We deserved so much more from these people, and to tell you the truth, I'm not sure that they can count on my vote in 2012.  I've never felt this way before, but I don't believe I can bring myself to vote any more for people that would rather work with McConnell and Boehner than us.

"The "continuing resolution" will likely pass the Senate in a blink, the lights will stay on, and then they can move on to other priorities: The DREAM Act, Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal, and START."

Based on the current Washington dynamics, I predict that the Republicans will find a way to run out the clock on all three of these things, thus defeating them without even casting votes against them.

And let us not forget, however politically incorrect it is to say this, that even if the DREAM act and DADT pass, the Democrats will have abandoned their primary responsibility in government- to establish a sound financial basis for the operation of the government and the allocation of its resources- to win on two bills which affect a minuscule minority of the American people.

Bob Feller Dies

Bob Feller died last night at 92.

One of the earliest sports memories I have is seeing Bob Feller pitch in Cleveland.  I was too young to understand that I was watching one of the most dominant pitchers in major league history.  He was part of a great tradition of Cleveland pitching, along with Bob Lemon (missed him,) Early Wynn and Herb Score (both of whom I saw later) in the days before the tribe became the Major League whipping boy it was from the sixties to the nineties.  Well, it was a long time ago.  Bye, Bob.

How Do People Tell Themselves This Kind of Lie?

From the Website of the "Army of Tennessee, Sons of Confederate Veterans"

"The preservation of liberty and freedom was the motivating factor in the South's decision to fight the Second American Revolution."

How can you be expected to reach some kind of reasonable common understanding with people who are willing to tell themselves such preposterous, malignant lies?

Where Are They Now?

Doesn't it seem past time that we had some sort of eruption from Orly Taitz?  Where's she gone?

Wingnut Wrapup

Green Eagle has been neglecting his duty lately, but here he is, back with a full load of right wing lies from the last few days.  As they say, read it and weep:

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "President Obama Must Oppose and Veto His Party's Monster Omnibus Bill"

Because it is imperative that he take orders from right wing lunatics bent on destroying him and anything he tries to accomplish.  That will sure make his presidency a success.  Sad to say, the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if Obama took this guy's advice.

Bob Owens, Confederate Yankee:  "Pajamas Media was kind enough to publish a piece I wrote about Fox News Sunday's interview with US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer on December 11th. Justice Breyer revealed himself to be a stereotypical leftist believer in a "living, breathing, Constitution"

As opposed to Republican Justices like Scalia and Alito, who appear to believe in a constitution that is dead as a doorknob.

Ann Coulter, Town Hall:  "Who cares if the Pentagon's sexual harassment task force supports gays in the military? The combat units don't, and they're the ones who do the job."

Except that the do.  But, what's a little truth to a wingnut?  By the way, Ann, do you think combat units support getting shot and blown to smithereens?  But they do it, because their job is to follow orders, not make up their own minds about things.  That's what being in the military is about.  Unlike you.  You are all about being a washed up has been.  In case you haven't noticed.

Confederate Yankee:  "What to make of President Obama’s recent “surprise” trip to Afghanistan to visit the troops? Certainly, having the Commander in Chief actually making contact with the troops is, generally speaking, a good thing. However..."

However.  However, it was a really contemptible thing for Obama to do, because even though we savage him when he doesn't do things like this, there's nothing to stop us from savaging him when he does do them, right?

Now, a right wing lesson in how to write a book about something that doesn't exist:

David Solway, Pajamas Media:  "The ‘Unholy Alliance’ Between Islamic Jihad and Utopian Socialism-A review of Jamie Glazov’s Showdown With Evil."

And now, the colossally, monumentally stupid idea of the day:

Because anyone knows how much copyrights have done to protect our music and movies.  This is a sure way to prevent people from leaking our national secrets, yes sir. Just ask the record companies.

Dennis Prager, World Net Daily:  "I have long believed that MTV has done more damage to America's young people than any other single institution."

Don't get out much, huh, Dennis?

World Net Daily:  "Does Christian message come through in 'Dawn Treader'?"

Who cares?

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Sarah Palin Leaves Country to Help the Suffering in Haiti"

Are they paying her $150,000 per appearance? Because otherwise I don't think she'll be hanging around for long.   Well, she may not help the suffering in Haiti, but as long as she's gone, it will sure help the suffering here at home.  Every cloud has a silver lining.

Anthony W. Hager, American Thinker:  "Elena Kagan's First Vote Was Both Baffling and Predictable...Embodying everything objectionable and inexplicable about the Supreme Court, judges, lawyers, and the legal system in general."

What a woman!  All that on her first vote!  I can't wait to see what she does next.

Astute Bloggers:  "I predict that in a few months Obama will poll worse than a soon-to-be indicted philanderer/widower John Edwards.  In a few years, nobody will admit they ever voted for this incompetent, mendacious, hypocritical, narcissistic postmodern leftist."

Another wonderful example of Bush Projection Syndrome.  In fact, despite a historically unprecedented multi hundred million dollar Republican/corporate campaign to destroy him, Obama's popularity has remained essentially unchanged for most of this year, in the high 40's, slightly higher than Reagan's was at this point in his first term.  Now, of course their guy Bush ended up around 22% positive, and every Republican ran against him as hard as they could.

But, who remeembers that?

Alan Caruba, Renew America:  "I am offended when Obama is not holding his hand over his heart when the anthem is played.  I am offended when he called me an enemy. I am offended when he bowed to the Saudi Arabian king! I am offended with his lies so obvious and bold that a deaf person could hear it!"

Alan, too bad you aren't offended when you lie yourself.

Tom Schoenberg, Renew America:  "Obama's Health-Care Law Ruled Unconstitutional Over Insurance Requirement"

Too bad this guy isn't offended when he lies either.

Jim Kouri, Renew America:  "Hamas puppetmasters? Palestinians push Obama, Clinton to "bully" Israelis"

That's called "negotiating," Jim.  Never heard of that?  That's where you start out demanding all sorts of things you know you can't get, and then see what you can get away with.  It's part of the free enterprise system, you know.  Got a problem there?

As usual, this could go on forever.  But, enough's enough, huh?

A Comment on My Support of Wikileaks

In the course of my life, I have seen repeated eruptions of government outrage at people who publicized things that officials didn't want us to know.  Offhand, I can think of exactly one time that these leaks caused us any real harm:  the Dick Cheney masterminded outing of Valerie Plame, which destroyed a large part of our covert monitoring of middle eastern nuclear proliferation.  And surprise, surprise, that was just fine with the American press.

Other than that, every case did not involve information damaging to our national security, but things that were embarrassing to the government perpetrators. It has virtually always been the case that the more information we have, the better off we are; and based on my experience of that, I say that the more information screwed out of the government, the better.

And, as for the usual hysterical Conservative screams that the revealing of this information is going to result in a few deaths, please remember this:  First of all, as usual with Conservative fear mongering, there is not a shred of evidence that any such thing has happened. And far more importantly, a million innocent Iraqi civilians lie in their graves today, because of American lies.  Until someone besides a few left wing hippies like myself shows some sign of caring about that, I'm just not going to get too worked up if a couple of people die so that we can hear the truth.

Fat Chance

"Gibbs: Afghan withdrawal will begin in July"

I'll believe that when I see it.  My prediction:  Obama will start some kind of real troop withdrawal the day after he ends the tax giveaways for the rich.

Can there be any more blatant sign of the sickness of our society than this one, reported today by the New York Times?

"Speculators Are Eager to Bet on Madoff Claims

The lawsuits filed by the trustee seeking money for Bernard L. Madoff’s fraud victims may be a blow for the defendants — but they are catnip for an obscure breed of Wall Street traders speculating on the outcome of the enormous Madoff bankruptcy case."

This is what our vital financial sector has become: maggots eating dead rats. People on Wall Street making a living by betting on the outcome of disasters that they create themselves.  And the game is still rigged by the government to make sure that these guys end up the winners in the murderous game they force the rest of us to pay for.

Ugly Blowback in Iraq

This sordid story from the New York Times:

"QOSH, Iraq — A new wave of Iraqi Christians has fled to northern Iraq or abroad amid a campaign of violence against them and growing fear that the country’s security forces are unable or, more ominously, unwilling to protect them.

The flight — involving thousands of residents from Baghdad and Mosul, in particular — followed an Oct. 31 siege at a church in Baghdad that killed 51 worshipers and 2 priests and a subsequent series of bombings and assassinations singling out Christians.

It threatens to reduce further what Archdeacon Emanuel Youkhana of the Assyrian Church of the East called “a community whose roots were in Iraq even before Christ.”

Would it be impolite to mention that this Christian community was doing just fine until the United States decided that it knew better than anyone in the world what would be best for the Iraqi people?  The anti-Muslim Christian hatemongers in this country who are already hard at work trying to use this persecution to advance their own perverted agenda, would be well advised to remember that none of this would be happening if it wasn't for the actions of their Christian president George Bush, actions which they supported every step of the way.

The Curse of American Exceptionalism

It is, unfortunately, time to discuss yet another perverse mangling of our history, brought to us by the American right- this time the misuse of the notion of American exceptionalism.

This term, first used by Alexis de Toqueville to refer to the fact that this country was founded by the will of the people, rather than through the monarchical power struggles that produced most previous countries, has been reforged by conservatives as a battering ram to beat up and silence anyone who dares to criticize their plans for the United States in any way.

Naturally, as this perversion of Toqueville's comments represents a new high in right wing nativism, its foremost proponent is politics' lowest common denominator of demagoguery, Sarah Palin.

"The Washington Post's Karen Tumulty wrote a smart piece this morning that identifies what will likely be the running theme of the 2012 presidential primary season: American exceptionalism. It's the name given to the concept that America is, among the many extant and departed nations of the earth, uniquely often crosses the line into jingoism, which happens when adherents to the philosophy of American exceptionalism seek not to define it but use it as a weapon...That's where Sarah Palin comes in.

What Palin wrote(about American Exceptionalism, in her new book) means absolutely nothing. It's just buzzwords interspersed with rote assertions of American greatness, and she might be the only person I've ever seen laud the "common sense" of preschoolers.

But you're not going to get a better explanation of her political philosophy: Don't think; don't challenge ; just follow me because I, more than anyone else, think America is the greatest."

Palin blasted out another Facebook diatribe Friday, criticizing President Obama for lacking "faith in American exceptionalism"

"We can't lose this next generation -- we have to keep teaching them what it means to be an American -- the American exceptionalism that so many of us do embrace," said Palin...It was a remarkable moment of clarity, making plain what -- on an emotional level -- the 2012 presidential election will really be about for many voters.

Nor is Palin the only one singing this song. Recent Republican Senator-elect Marco Rubio, upon winning his  race, said:

“Americans believe with all their heart that the United States of America is simply the single greatest nation in all of human history, a place without equal in the history of all of mankind.”

Well, some Americans believe that.

I could go on and on here, with more examples, but you get the point.  A classic use of this weapon by the right is the way they succeeded in convincing so many Americans that we have the greatest medical care system in the world, and that they would all be harmed by any attempt to rein in the greed and corruption of health insurance companies.

Well, let us get to the ways in which our country really is exceptional, after three decades of being run on Republican economic principles.  Here are some of them:

In terms of equal distribution of wealth, the United States ranks 69th in the world, according to the CIA, behind such great bastions of equal  opportunity as Yemen, Bangladesh and Cambodia.

And proud of the opportunity to advance that our country offers?  Think again:  From the BBC: "The truth is that the US the bottom of the international league table of social mobility. "

A record one in six American families went hungry last year because they did not have enough food.

America has the least generous unemployment system in the world , behind Korea, Greece and Turkey.  In terms of the replacement of previously earned wages, the U.S. pays about 1/4 of the OECD average.
The United States is the only industrialized nation in the world that does not provide some form of universal health care to its citizens.

132 million Americans have no dental insurance, whereas everyone in the European Union has access by law to some kind of dental plan.

Roughly 60 million American workers have no paid sick leave...more than 160 countries ensure that all their citizens receive paid sick leave and more than 110 of them guarantee paid leave from the first day of illness.

Life expectancy in the United States has declined to 36th in the world, behind such countries as Cuba, Costa Rica and even our own territory of Puerto Rico.

The U.S. has declined to 33rd in the world in infant mortality, behind such countries as Brunei, Slovenia and again, Cuba.

In a list of the 72 most industrialized countries in the world, the United States is the only one with no statutory minimum paid vacation.  This compares to the EU's minimum of four weeks paid vacation a year (many countries in Europe offer more than this.  The minimum, for example, in France, is 5 weeks.)

CNN:  "Workers in the United States are putting in more hours than anyone else in the industrialized world."
Figures for 2004 (note: things have gotten worse for us since then) for selected countries: Average work hours per year:  Sweden 1316, France 1346, Germany 1362, Italy 1523, USA 1777.  Yes, workers in that Socialistic hell, Sweden, work almost nine hours less a week that we do here in the Capitalist paradise of the United States.

The World Health Organization ranks the United States health care system 37th in the world, far behind all developed European countries, despite the fact that health expenditure as a share of GDP in the United States is by far the highest in the world, at 15.2%.  Typical European expenditures vary from 8.9% to 11.4%.  The WHO's measure of "health system attainment and performance" ranks the United States 72nd, behind such bastions of the free market as Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka and Iran.

And as I pointed out a few weeks ago, American workers cannot even take comfort any more in the notion that they are the most highly paid in the world.  European manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes are moving production here because they can pay workers half of what their domestic employees get.

However, do not despair.  The United States definitely leads the world in some statistics.  We are by far the world's largest arms dealer, beating our nearest competitor, Russia, by 2 3/4 times, and accounting for 41% of all international arms sales.  And we are still the world's leader in prison population, at over 2 million incarcerated, easily surpassing the totals of number 2 country China, which despite having a population many times ours, has only succeeded in imprisoning a million and a half people.

This is the rotten, ugly, third world existence that we have been given in this country, while people turn their heads from the hateful sight, confident that God has created us to be the Best Country on Earth in Every Way, confident because their demagogic leaders tell them this every single day, as those same leaders rob them blind and leave them with a loathsome shell of what America is supposed to be, and once was.  The world moves on, fitfully, but it still moves on.  With one exception.  The American exception.

Vatican Morality On Display Again

From The Guardian, this sordid tale:

"WikiLeaks cables: Vatican refused to engage with child sex abuse inquiry

Leaked cable lays bare how Irish government was forced to grant Vatican officials immunity from testifying to Murphy commission...The Vatican refused to allow its officials to testify before an Irish commission investigating the clerical abuse of children and was angered when they were summoned from Rome, US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks reveal.

Requests for information from the 2009 Murphy commission into sexual and physical abuse by clergy "offended many in the Vatican" who felt that the Irish government had "failed to respect and protect Vatican sovereignty during the investigations", a cable says."

Where to begin, where to begin?  First, what the hell business does a church have with "sovereignty," anyway?  And since when should that claim of sovereignty justify their trying to hide perpetrators of one of the most abominable crimes known to man?  Once again, the Catholic Church is revealed to be little more than a factory for the mass production of child molesters; and rather than show appropriate outrage over that fact, the Church's leaders are far more interested in their preposterous claims of diplomatic immunity.

It shames all of us that our government gives any credence or support to this hateful organization, and it is long past time that we at least stop funding it by permitting it to pay no taxes on the money it extorts from its followers.

And may I also note that, for those of you who haven't made up their minds about which side to take in the Wikileaks controversy, that here is some more disgusting information that the rich and powerful would prefer that we don't ever hear about, and once again, with the failure of the mainstream press to do its job, we are forced to rely on journalistic guerillas like Wikileaks to learn the truth.

But Wait...There's More:  I know financial crimes may be pretty small matters compared to sexual abuse of children, but this just in:

"court documents show that prosecutors say the Vatican Bank deliberately flouted anti-laundering laws "with the aim of hiding the ownership, destination and origin of the capital." The documents also reveal investigators' suspicions that clergy may have acted as fronts for corrupt businessmen and Mafia."

I guess it figures, huh? Boy, it makes me feel good to know I'm helping carry out their good works with my tax money.

More Collapse to the Right

Isn't it a sad thing that the entire mainstream media in this country are so beaten down or so complicit that they have to rely on a bunch of out of control teenagers to stand up for freedom of the press?

It's Okay if You Are A Republican- Dick Cheney Edition

Here's an amusing story, via Think Progress:

"Halliburton May Pay $500 Million To Nigerian Government To Settle Case And Keep Cheney Out Of Jail...GlobalPost goes on to note that “Cheney and three other top executives could face sentences of three years in a Nigerian prison if convicted of the charges in the 16-count indictment.” One has to wonder how the employees and stockholders of the company feel about it possibly sacrificing half a billion dollars to keep Cheney and other executives out of jail."

Just to give some perspective on this amount, Halliburton's average annual tax payments to our country over the last five years are $301.2 million.  The $500 million amount of this bribe is over a quarter of Halliburton's annual income.

I have spoken before about executives' supposed fiduciary responsibility to stockholders, which seems to go out the window when the executives have a chance to dip their hands in the corporate trough.  Can there be a worse example of this criminal behavior?  Of what possible value is it to the shareholders of Halliburton to keep this washed up crook, who nearly bankrupted the company when he ran it, out of a Nigerian jail?

Still, watch.  The bribe will be paid, Cheney will go free, and not one of our Washington pundits will see a thing wrong with the whole thing.

The Obama Collapse Continues

From today's New York Times:

"The Obama administration is retreating on long-delayed environmental regulations — new rules governing smog and toxic emissions from industrial boilers — as it adjusts to a changed political dynamic in Washington with a more muscular Republican opposition.

The move to delay the rules, announced this week by the Environmental Protection Agency, will leave in place policies set by President George W. Bush. President Obama ran for office promising tougher standards, and the new rules were set to take effect over the next several weeks."

And don't forget, these are regulations.  They don't require 60 votes in the Senate, they don't require Republican cooperation, they don't require anything at all except for Obama to do the right thing.

Which, it now appears, he has no interest in doing.  One more promise to the people who worked so hard to put him in office, discarded without a second thought, in order to get...absolutely nothing from the intransigent, corrupt Republican party, which is just waiting for the next chance to stab him in the back.

Following national politics these days is depressing.

"Environmental advocates are furious...But in a striking turnabout, the National Association of Manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute — which have been anything but friendly to Mr. Obama — are praising his administration."

Boy, didn't that make your day?

Obama Administration Lies About Prosecuting Wall Street Fraud

I want to strongly recommend this article at the Columbia Journalism Review, which recounts several other pieces detailing the sham which is Obama's prosecution of Wall Street crime.  Here is a small excerpt:

"The Obama Administration’s Financial-Fraud Stunt Backfires...The New York Times’s Andrew Ross Sorkin called out Eric Holder’s Justice Department on Monday, noting that the 343 criminal defendants it said it’s prosecuting in a sweep it lamely calls Operation Broken Trust are small fry. No executive from the major corporations (like, oh, AIG, Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, Countrywide, Ameriquest, etc.) has yet been charged."

And what's more, there is plenty of evidence in this article to convince anyone that even the accounting of cases they are supposedly prosecuting is grossly inflated, including many cases that have nothing to do with the real issues, but which were included to pump up the numbers and further delude the American people into thinking that Obama is serious about preventing Wall Street greed from sending us into another depression.  At this point, Obama's claim that he prevented another depression needs to be rewritten:  he has postponed the depression. Unless he takes real action to stop the criminals on Wall Street from repeating their behavior of recent years, that depression is still on the menu.

Ever Heard This?

I've been thinking about this quote all day, and I am happy to see that Digby was thinking of it too:

"Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me — and I welcome their hatred.

Those who used to have [access to the White House] are not happy. Some of them are desperate. Only desperate men with their backs to the wall would descend so far below the level of decent citizenship as to foster the current . . . campaign against America's working people."

Do you recognize that?  It was spoken during the 1936 campaign by Obama's alleged role model, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  Wouldn't it be nice to have a President like that again?

Another Piece of Obama's Sellout

With all of the anger about Obama's collapse in giving a gigantic present to the rich, as a reasonable alternative to standing up to the Republicans, scant attention has been given to an equally malignant part of this historic failure.  That is the cut to the payroll tax.  This is the money that funds social security. So, instead of standing up to the rich and demanding that they pay their fair share, Obama is going to short  the social security trust fund by $120 billion over the next year, to fund the government.  And in the run up to the 2012 election, Republicans are going to scream bloody murder that, if Obama doesn't continue the payroll tax cut, he is "raising taxes," just like they are doing with the Bush giveaways to the rich.  And Obama will cave, because he will let no long-term looming disaster get in the way of his lunatic notions of how to win re-election.

The end result of this will to be to take the Social Security system, which despite all of the Republican lying for the last three decades, is doing just fine, and accomplishing what the Republicans never could: driving it into insolvency.  Obama is about to achieve what the Republicans have fruitlessly dreamed of for years: destroying the greatest legacy of his supposed role model, Franklin Roosevelt, and in the process, taking a moribund Republican party and resurrecting it into our rulers.

Another Terrorist for the Mainstream Press to Ignore

From a number of stories today online- this quote from Talking Points Memo:

"Self-described "patriot" Mark Krause, a 40-year-old Arkansas blacksmith whose home was foreclosed upon, was arrested in Washington state on Friday and charged with placing a bomb made out of a Pepsi can in front of a polling place during the runoff election for the Arkansas Democratic Senate primary."

I just want to point out the obvious conclusions that we need to draw from this incident.  First, that all Christians are terrorists.  Second, that they are all trying to replace the Constitution with religious rule.  Third, that all Christian churches are nothing but fronts for terrorist organizations.  And finally, that we need to kick every Christian out of the country and send them back to wherever they came from, if we want to preserve our Republic.

That makes sense, right?

It's Happened

"In a statement delivered at the White House a few minutes ago, President Obama confirmed the details leaked earlier today about the shape of the compromise to extend Bush income and estate tax policy for another two years in exchange for a thirteen month extension of unemployment benefits and a package of tax cuts designed to stimulate the economy.

President Obama said he "completely disagrees" with the GOP's insistence on extending tax cuts for the wealthy, but he said that given their opposition to extending any tax cuts without including upper-income taxpayers, it was necessary to agree with their demand."

The gutless worm.  No, it wasn't necessary to act like a craven coward.  It was necessary to stand up to these greedy bastards.  This tax giveaway to the rich is going to force major cuts in the future to Social Security and Medicare, and with weak, feckless Democratic leaders like Obama and Harry Reid in charge, there will never be a point where we make the rich pay their share of maintaining America.

He has continued Bush's policies in all but name in Iraq and Afghanistan.  He has continued Bush's pandering to Wall Street and the rich, which nearly caused a depression. He has continued Bush's loathsome torture and national security policies.  He has done everything to let the country continually slide into an inextricable morass.  And he continues to reward the people who tore our country apart, by giving them whatever wealth the rest of us have left.

Mark my words: in the runup to 2012, he is going to give away every bit of health care reform that doesn't suit insurance companies, and he is going to make these miserable tax giveaways permanent.  He is going to be intimidated into staying involved in Afghanistan.  He can't stand up to the least threat from Republicans, however impotent, and he will pull the country down around him rather than do the right thing.

How Long Can This Go On?

From the New York Times:

"As the White House and Congressional Republicans near a deal on sweeping tax legislation, including an extension of the Bush-era tax rates for all income levels, President Obama has agreed to give up the “Making Work Pay” tax credit that was the central tax break for middle and low-income Americans in last year’s economic stimulus bill."

And what did the Republicans "agree" to give up?
"Officials said negotiators were also close to an agreement to restore the federal estate tax, which lapsed at the start of this year, with an exemption of up to $5 million per individual, and a maximum rate of 35 percent."

In other words, what the Republicans agreed to was a mammoth cut in the estate tax, in return for which Obama gave up the "central tax break for middle and low-income Americans" in his stimulus package.  The Republicans graciously consented to let Obama screw the middle class, in return for his giving a gift to the rich.  I've never heard of a negotiator who gives up on something important so his opponents will consent to let him give up on something else important.

Man, the fate of the whole world seems to have come down to how much of a craven sucker one man can be.

A Serious Question

I have a question that I haven't been able to answer, despite a reasonable amount of time searching the web.  The question is this:  How much revenue does the government (Federal, State and local) lose because of religious tax exemptions?  Because the earnings of churches are exempt, I suspect that no accurate number exists, but there must be some relatively reliable estimates.  Does anyone have any idea where I can answer this question?

I found a link to an apparently no-longer-functioning site that gave the amount as over a trillion dollars a year, but as the site seems to no longer exist, I can't verify that number in any way.

Here is why I am interested:  If I were in charge, this is the very first place I would look to diminish government's budgetary problems.  A trillion or so a year, spread out over Federal, State and local governments would go a long way toward balancing the budget, and between the behavior of Catholic priests and Muslim clerics, and the vicious insanity of evangelicals these days, I can't see what we are getting in return for our largesse, other than crime, corruption, hatred and greed.

Here Comes Failure

Thanks a lot, President Obama.  From the New York Times:

"White House officials and Congressional Republicans said Sunday they were closing in on a deal to temporarily continue the Bush-era tax cuts at all income levels, while bitterly frustrated Democratic Congressional leaders began exploring whether they would have the votes for such a package.

Rather than extending the tax rates only on income described by Democrats as middle class — up to $250,000 a year for couples and $200,000 for individuals — the deal would also keep the rates for higher earners, probably for two years. In return, Republicans said they would probably agree to extend jobless aid for the long-term unemployed. "

How can you even begin to explain what a thorough, humiliating failure this is for a party that still controls both houses of Congress by large margins?  Can Obama be so stupid as to think that the same Republican howling about "raising taxes" that made him collapse this time will not occur in two years, when he is running for reelection?  And even the fig leaf of the Republican agreement to extend unemployment benefits is not any kind of a guarantee.  In fact, what can be virtually guaranteed is that, with Obama capitulating on this issue, the Republicans are going to demand more and more before they allow unemployment benefits to be extended.

As Kos points out, just 26% of Americans favor extending the Bush tax giveaways to the rich.  With that kind of popular support, Can't Obama find it in himself to make some kind of stand against this abominable theft of our resources?  Apparently not.

This is a thorough rout.  Once again, the rich have their way, no matter what damage it does to the country, and in the end, Obama isn't lifting a finger to protect the rest of us.  There are no words to explain my fury at this man's voluntary impotence.

Forget It, You Can't Afford Her

This news just in:

"The national Tea Party Nation group is planning to send a letter to Sarah Palin asking the former governor of Alaska and John McCain sidekick to run for chair of the Republican National Committee."

Listen, guys, unless you are willing to come up with $150,000 every time she shows up for a meeting, forget it.  She's got more important things to do with her time.

Although, it's kind of a shame, really, for those of us who enjoyed the reign of Michael Steele.

Wingnut Wrapup

Oh yeah, they're still here.  And even if Barack seems to be joining them, Green Eagle is still on the watch.  Here's today's selection:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Oops!… Obama Forgets the Coast Guard During Afghan Speech"

What an abomination!

Maybe this is the reason:  "Chief Petty Officer Daniel Kinville and Petty Officer 2nd Class Lauren...are the only two Coast Guard personnel in Afghanistan."  Or maybe he just hates the troops.  We report, you decide.

Confederate Yankee Speaks the Truth:  "It is the height of hilarity that McCaskill and her fellow Democratic senators think that this vote (for middle class tax cuts) actually helps their image with the Tea Party-affiliated voters that drove so many of their allies out of office just over a month ago. It is cognitive dissonance on a massive scale."

It sure is, Confederate Yankee.  Because you and your self-destructive, racist teabagger friends are determined to destroy the country no matter what Obama does.  If he thinks anything he does is going to make them accept a black president, he really has gone off his rocker.

And now a lesson in rewriting History, the Republican Way:

Kevin Glass, Town Hall:  "Democrats Hold Meaningless Tax Votes, Hold America Hostage- Democrats have called the Senate back in session today for a pair of meaningless, sure-to-fail votes that will increase taxes."

Translation:  The votes are meaningless, because Republicans aren't going to do a God damned thing until we give trillions to the rich.  Democrats are holding Americans hostage by trying to give 98% of us a tax cut.  Republicans on the other hand are standing up for all of us by squandering our money on rich people.

Michael Reagan, Town Hall:  "Call it Treason:  If we had a president in the White House who understood that we are at war with a crazed faction of Islam, and was willing to act on that belief, there would be no question about how we should deal with people who give aid and comfort to the enemy -- they’d be tried for treason and when found guilty stood up before a firing squad. "

This refers to Julian Assange, head of Wikileaks.  Michael, how can I explain to you how idiotic this is?  Your father, who committed real treason when he illegally supplied the Iranian mullahs with two thousand missiles, got off scot free.  But rail on, jerk.

Lexington, Red State:  "Apparently some folks were upset by my suggestion yesterday that it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world if Julian Assange were to find a small caliber bullet in his cranial cavity."

Adult foreign policy, Republican style.

Streiff, Red State:  "Erick and Russ Vought have posted on what appears to be an inclination on the part of the GOP caucus to let Obama have his treaty, essentially trading our national security for tax cuts and sacrificing our nation’s defense policy..."

Because it makes us less secure when we can inspect Russian nuclear facilities.  Even things that are in this nation's clearest self interest become insignificant compared to a chance to destroy Obama.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "CHINA BLOWS UP US CARRIER GROUP in Video at This Year’s Air Show"

In a video.  Jim, a couple of days ago, I personally obliterated a couple of innocent city-states in Civilization V. So, what are you going to do about that, huh, tough guy?

And now, the most pathetic attack on Obama today:

World Net Daily Exclusive:  "Obamacare challenge advances toward Supremes"

Translation into the language that the rest of us speak:  The challenge was thrown out by a lower court.  It "advances toward Supremes" because it was dismissed, and some wingnuts are going to waste more time and money appealing the decision.

Ed Lasky, American Thinker:  "Democrats give one more big favor to George Soros...Why would the Senate take up precious time in the lame duck session considering a food safety bill?

It must be to pander to George Soros.  It couldn't have anything to do with keeping people from getting sick.

How do I best explain this to you, O not-so-astute ones?  National health care systems don't cover foreign rich guys.  And believe me, it's not that much consolation to the tens of millions of Americans without health care that a Saudi sheik can get all the medical treatment he can pay for in New York.

Moe Lane, Red State:  "Big Wind looking for federal handout...The wind ‘industry’ is apparently looking for more federal aid - actually, no, there’s nothing apparent about it.  They want more federal aid...For the record: if your business plan requires - not benefits from; requires - an annual bailout from the federal government in order to function, then by definition you have a bad business plan.  Mostly because you are not actually in business; you are a parasite pretending to be a business."

Get the "Big Wind" thing?  Like, the people manufacturing windmills are just like "big oil."  And while we're on the subject, I guess according to people like Moe, it's okay to extort billions in giveaways from the government if your industry is already the most profitable business in the history of the world.

Pajamas Media:  "Political Correctness Kills: Study Shows How Terrorists Infiltrate U.S. Government...Consider Abdulrahman Alamoudi, the Muslim leader who most frequently visited the Clinton White House. Patrick Poole rightly describes Alamoudi as:

"The most prominent Islamic activist leader in America at the time, he had infiltrated the highest levels of political power. … [He was asked] by the Defense Department to establish the military’s Muslim chaplain corps"

Oh my God, the Muslim Chaplain Corps!  Our Democracy is Over!  While we're on the subject of "Political Correctness Kills," I wonder how many people have been killed by members of the Muslim chaplain corps.  It must be a number so huge as to have stunned Mr. Poole into silence, as he failed to mention any examples.

World Net Daily:  "Texas continues to lead way in gun silencer sales"

And we're so proud of them.

Frozen in Time

I have a list of things I feel I should be writing about, but everything seems to have come down to one issue:  when, if ever, is Barack Obama going to awaken from his hypnotic collapse and begin to govern?  If he continues with his present behavior, this country is doomed.  We need a president who is capable of something else than acquiescing in the face of any opposition, however contemptible and however hollow; and right now we don't have one.

Obama may very well turn out to be the weakest president since James Buchanan, whose pathological inaction was a major factor in making the Civil War inevitable.  He has now utterly squandered the strong hand he was dealt in 2008, and he shows every sign of being even more incapable of wielding the power of his office now that the Republicans have made electoral gains, than he has been in the last two years.  His capitulations to the Republicans in the last couple of weeks have been pathetic, and they only seem to presage worse to come.

The nation needs strong action on the economy NOW.  It doesn't need our president and Democratic Congress to be wasting the few weeks of strength left to them on peripheral issues like Don't Ask, Don't Tell, or the Dream act, which, however desirable, will do nothing to set the country back on the right track.

And Obama seems mesmerized by the Republicans and the press, standing motionless, just waiting for the cobra to strike again.  God help our Republic.

Forget It- I'll Spend the Money on Drugs or Something Else Useful

Not that anyone cares, but I got the following sickening e-mail from the Democratic National Committee today:

"The President's opponents in Congress are gearing up for a fight.

Their plan? Obstruct progress and delay action on our agenda during these last few weeks of this session of Congress.

Which battles go our way is unknown -- what's certain is that failure to act will hurt the economy, the middle class, the unemployed, the military, and our national security."

Which battles go your way?  I can tell you which battles are going to go your way, if Obama continues his utter collapse of will, and doesn't awaken from the dream world he is inhabiting- none of them, and you know it damned well.

"Because among other critical items, our agenda includes extending tax cuts for the middle class, repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," making sure those who are out of work get the relief they need, passing the DREAM Act, and ratifying the New START Treaty -- a nuclear arms agreement critical to national security."

Here is the Obama agenda as far as I can see it:  Collapsing on middle class tax cuts, wasting immense time and political capital on DADT without getting any kind of positive result, getting nothing for the unemployed unless it is accompanied by more huge unfunded giveaways to the rich, wasting time on the DREAM act, which is about number 56,331 on the list of most Americans' concerns, and failing to even exert enough leadership to get Republican support for an extension of a treaty originally negotiated by Ronald Reagan.

"We want results

Before Congress adjourns at the end of the year, we'll have a chance to pass some of the President's top priorities."

Listen, right now it looks like Obama's only priority is collapsing in the face of any Republican opposition, and acquiescing to whatever will do the most damage to the country.  I don't need to pay for that- I'm already getting it for free.

Helen Thomas Clarifies Her Position

"Congress, the White House and Hollywood, Wall Street are owned by the Zionists"

Thanks for that history lesson, Helen.  But no, of course as you insist, you are not an antisemite, you are just speaking the truth.

The same truth spoken by Father Coughlin.  The same truth spoken by David Duke.  And (do I need to say it?) the same truth spoken by that guy over there in Germany who started World War II.

I suppose we could be charitable and suggest that, after a lifetime as an invaluable journalist, Ms. Thomas has fallen into dementia; but sorry, I don't feel charitable with people who say things like this.  I think baseless hatred of Jews is far more prevalent in this country than anyone wants to admit, as are baseless hatreds of black people, Hispanics and anyone else who doesn't meet, shall we say, Sarah Palin's notion of real Americans.

The Ugly Truth

Paul Krugman, in today's New York Times, for those who may have missed it:

"After the Democratic “shellacking” in the midterm elections, everyone wondered how President Obama would respond. Would he show what he was made of? Would he stand firm for the values he believes in, even in the face of political adversity?

On Monday, we got the answer: he announced a pay freeze for federal workers. This was an announcement that had it all. It was transparently cynical; it was trivial in scale, but misguided in direction; and by making the announcement, Mr. Obama effectively conceded the policy argument to the very people who are seeking — successfully, it seems — to destroy him.

So I guess we are, in fact, seeing what Mr. Obama is made of."

I've got nothing to add, except this one fact, which Krugman rudely fails to forget:

"Meanwhile, there’s a real deficit issue on the table: whether tax cuts for the wealthy will, as Republicans demand, be extended. Just as a reminder, over the next 75 years the cost of making those tax cuts permanent would be roughly equal to the entire expected financial shortfall of Social Security."

Yes, we are choosing here to deny a semblance of a decent life to retired people who have worked all their lives, in order to continue a huge tax giveaway for the rich, originally passed by a terminally corrupt Republican president and congress.  Welcome to Obama's World, in which such a thing is seen as a reasonable compromise.

Do We Have to Get the Truth from the Russians, Now?

This hilarious opinion piece from Pravda:

" By attacking the democratically elected President of the United States of America at a sensitive time in her country’s history, she shows the tact of a boorish drunkard bawling obscenities at a funeral….

And now she turns not only against the fibre and backbone of her country, but against its democratically elected President, accusing him of being incompetent for not stopping Wikileaks. Where was she and where was her GOP before and during the 9/11 attacks? She accuses President Obama of not taking “steps” to assure the leaks were not published. What “steps”?……

If anything is a threat to the national security of the United States of America, it is this screaming, unrefined oaf with as much class as a searing release of flatulence followed by hysterical giggling at a state banquet. Is this what the people of the USA deserve?"

Boy, You Got That Right

Jed Lewison, at Daily Kos:

"After the House passes the Obama tax plan -- something we were told the House would never do, even though it ended up passing by 46 votes -- the first thing we hear from the administration is sorry, but Republicans won't let us do the right thing -- so we're going to sit down with them and figure out the best way to do the wrong thing."

Obama's standard operating procedure.  God, how did we get saddled with this pathetic person?

By the way, just in case you wondered, here is the House vote on the middle class tax cut:

For the tax cut:  214 Democrats, 3 Republicans

Against the tax cut:  20 Democrats, 185 Republicans.

If this isn't the first thing out of every Democrat's mouth every time they get near a microphone for the next six weeks, they're crazy.

Update: Thanks to Daily Kos, this tabulations:
9 of the 20 Dems who voted against the tax cut, or 45%, were among the Democratic congressmen who lost their seats last month.  Maybe some of their fellows should think about what that means.
