Serious Journalism, Right Wing Style

Joseph Farah of World Net Daily has spent a good part of the last year furious with the Obama administration because they will not recognize his website and himself as legitimate journalists.

I have to say, I really see his point, when I read stories like this one:

"World Net Daily Exclusive!

Author: European Antichrist looking more and more unlikely

With Europe on the verge of economic collapse, what about all those popular predictions that the European Union would become the world's political powerhouse, giving rise to the endtimes prophecies of a world dictator known to Bible students as the Antichrist?

Joel Richardson, author of a best-selling book on Bible prophecy, says atheists will have a field day mocking Christians for the incorrect interpretations about the last days.

The author of "The Islamic Antichrist: The Shocking Truth About the True Nature of the Beast" wants everyone to know that if the EU falls, it is not an indictment of the truth of the Bible."

This is the sort of hard-hitting journalism that is really going to help us make our country a better place. How could anyone doubt Farah's credentials as a serious journalist?

Buchanan Is a Nazi

You wonder why I referred to Pat Buchanan yesterday as "little Hitler?" Here's something that was on his website today:

"... the 9/11 attack ...was... carried out by Mossad agents in collusion with elements of the CIA, adding that since its formation, Israel has penetrated every Arab government and terrorist organization.

“My guess is that at an early point they said to the bad guys in the CIA – hey this operation’s running what do we do, and the zionists and the neo-cons said let’s use it,”

Sounding a chilling note, Hart added that the U.S. is in grave danger of an Israeli-instigated false-flag nuclear attack, perhaps using an American nuclear weapon stolen from Minot Air Force Base during the “loose nukes” rogue operation of August, 2007. The motive would be to trigger a U.S. war with Iran, and perhaps to finish the ethnic cleansing of Palestine under cover of war–which Hart is convinced the Zionists are planning to do as soon as the opportunity presents itself,”

Understand now? Yet he continues to be presented by our "liberal" press as an acceptable, reasonable political commentator.
This extremely even-handed and insightful piece of serious reporting, from Floyd and Mary Beth Brown (aren't they relatives of Bonnie and Clyde?) at Town Hall:

"Is the Impeachment of Barack Obama Moving Forward?

All of a sudden, everyone is talking about the possibility of impeaching Barack Obama.

Drudge is writing about it. Sean Hannity is talking about it. Dick Morris is saying that the potential scandal is "enormous.". Karl Rove called it an "extraordinary charge." wrote that "it could be grounds for impeachment."

Everyone! Karl Rove, Matt Drudge, Sean Hannity and Dick Morris. That's everyone! Four pathological, criminal right wing liars! And World Net Daily, which has been campaigning to get rid of Obama since before he took office! That's everybody!

Aren't you glad you know that now.

These people are nothing but human scum. We are never going to be able to look at the right wing noise machine for one single day, as long as Obama is in office, without violent screams to throw him out of office, on any bogus pretext they can think of. And after years of yelling treason at anyone who dared criticize the abominable George W. Bush while he was in the process of destroying our country and murdering a million innocent Iraqi civilians, they have entitled themselves to this behavior.

There is no reasoning or dealing with these people. They are out to destroy our country. It very well may come to the point where they have to be put down like mad dogs.

Wingnut Wrapup

I really wanted people to get a taste of the synthetic furor that Conservatives have ginned up over Obama having once offered Joe Sestak a position in his administration. Here are a few selections from their endless screaming tirades on this pathetic subject:

David Harsanyi, Town Hall: "What if Sestak Wasn't the Only One?"

Oh my God, oh my God, what if the President of the United States actually offered positions in his administration to TWO Democrats with political ambitions!! The Crime! The Scandal!

Pat "Little Hitler" Buchanan, Town Hall: "When does a political deal become a bribe?"

It is not a political deal to offer someone a job, Pat, you lying dick. Let's get this straight- this law was intended to prevent rich people from paying candidates off to get them to drop out of races, not to prevent the head of the Democratic party from having a voice in who his party runs for office. As the leader of the party, of course Obama has a right to participate in deciding who the party supports. That is not bribery- it is normal, perfectly acceptable political behavior.

Michelle Malkin: "At his first press conference in 308 days, Obama fielded questions about...the mounting outrage over Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Joe Sestak's job-trading allegations with a sluggishness bordering on geriatric."

Did it ever occur to you that he was bored to sleep by the stupidity of this whole issue?

Confederate Wankee: "As others have pointed out, there aren't too many scenarios here, and none are good from Democrats. Either Sestak is lying, or someone in the Obama Administration seems to have committed a felony."

Another lie from another habitual liar.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Karl Rove: Joe Sestak Is Lying Or Protecting a Felon in the White House...It looks like the Sestak scandal is not going away any time soon for the Obama White House. And if Karl Rove is right, this won’t have a happy ending for the Obama corruptocrats."

Karl Rove! Karl Rove criticizing lying and protecting felons in the White House. God, the indignities we have to endure- to be forced to listen to the most dishonest felon ever to set foot in the White House lecturing us about dishonesty. There's nothing they won't stoop to.

It is not a crime, it is not improper, it is normal political practice. But the Republican party has tried ever since Obama began running for President to find some excuse to impeach him, and they have totally failed. So they are inventing something out of nothing, exactly the same as they did with Clinton and the blow job. This is the behavior of traitors and seditionists. And we have to live with it. Unless people take Green Eagle's advice and kick the Southern states the hell out of our country. And at the same time, let's give all of Arizona south of the Grand Canyon back to Mexico.

Anyway, enough of that. In other news:

Charles Krauthammer, Town Hall: "Whose Blowout Is It, Anyway? the safest of all places, on land, we've had a 30-year ban on drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge."

According to this world-champion liar, the BP oil spill is totally the fault of the environmental movement, for not letting the Oil companies just despoil any land they want to drill on. And I'm sure he wouldn't make them serve Negroes in their restaurants either.

Vladimir, Red State: "Man-Made Calamity to Hit LA, Gulf Coast...Interior Secretary Ken Salazar told reporters this afternoon that the Obama Administration is ordering a moratorium on all off-shore oil and gas drilling activity...That’s going to have a deep, sudden impact of the loss of 33,000 good-paying jobs across the Gulf South."

If you believe this idiot, stopping offshore drilling is a far greater disaster than anything the oil spill might cause. And if these people lose their jobs, it's all Obama's fault for interfering in the right of oil companies to do whatever the hell they want, in pursuit of profit. At least, that's what they claim at Red State. Buying into that one? No? I didn't think so.

Bryan Fischer, Renew America: "Homosexuality gave us Adolph Hitler, and homosexuals in the military gave us the Brown Shirts, the Nazi war machine and six million dead Jews. Gays in the military is an experiment that has been tried and found disastrously and tragically wanting. Maybe it's time for Congress to learn a lesson from history."

Hey, it wasn't Nazis that killed six million Jews, it was gay people. How's that for conservative thinking in a nutshell: Nazis good, gays bad.

Marie Jon, Renew America: "Social Justice pastors, your chickens will come home to roost"

And let's hope they do, just in case you get sick and need them to pay your doctor.

More About the Teabag Fiction

Here are a few excerpts from an article from the Washington Post which provides some data to back up what I have been saying for months about the tea party movement:

" Supporters overwhelmingly identify themselves as Republicans or GOP-leaning independents...The new movement is also relatively small, with 8 percent of supporters claiming to be "active participants" -- about 2 percent of the total population."

Two percent. And this is the "movement" that our liberal press has blown up into a major player in our national political scene.

"The percentage of people who say the Democratic Party represents their personal values and is in tune with the problems of people like themselves hasn't changed since November. The percentage siding with the GOP, however, has dropped by almost precisely the numbers now siding with the tea party."

And it's the Democrats, we are told over and over again, who should be afraid of these petulant lunatics.

"A sizable share of those not already sympathetic to the tea party also say that the more they hear, the less they like the movement."

I wonder why that might be. Maybe the stupidity? Or the hate, or the racism? Or the ignorance? Take your pick.

I have been saying since last summer that it is my impression that the entire tea party movement was largely a gigantic, phony pantomime, in which the media willingly collaborate with the Republican party to manufacture the appearance of a huge movement out of almost nothing. I have shown picture after picture of tea party protests that have gotten national attention, but which seem to have attracted no more than a few dozen or a couple of hundred people. I have pointed out that practically every tea party event has fallen vastly short of predicted attendance, while left-leaning demonstrations ten times their size go totally ignored by the mainstream press.

Well, here is more solid evidence to back up my claim- the entire tea party movement is a colossal con job.

From TPM, Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia attorney general and all around right wing demagogue:

"Presenting his lawsuit against health-care reform in apocalyptic and grandiose terms, Ken Cuccinelli has said that health-care itself is a "secondary" issue in the legal challenge. The real goal, the Virginia Attorney General acknowledges, is to limit federal power. "If we lose, it's very much the end of federalism as we've known it for over 220 years," he said."

I'm not a lawyer, so call me an idiot if you want, but doesn't a person have to demonstrate "standing" to have a lawsuit considered in Federal court? And if this suit is not about the substance of the bill, doesn't that destroy any claim of standing that Cuddinelli has to bring the suit?

That is to say, in simpler terms, you have to demonstrate that you would be actually harmed by something before you can sue to stop it, and isn't any such assertion destroyed by his admission that this suit is not about health care reform at all, but rather is an attempt to push the same old right wing agenda on the country?

Civil War

You might be interested in this article from Media Matters in which Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and two more Fox News regulars all have suddenly decided to push the idea that critics of Arizona's stupid immigration law are pushing the United States toward another civil war.

It should be clear at this point, that if it doesn't happen, it won't be because these people aren't perfectly willing to commit mass treason.

Welcome Back to Reality, Barack

From Politico:

"Noting that sometimes conservative activists portray him with a Hitler mustache, Obama seemed to put to rest any notion that there could be broad-based bipartisan cooperation — something he promised to try to bring to Washington during his 2008 campaign.

“There are members of their base who think if somebody even smiles at me, they think, ‘You’re a traitor. You smiled at Obama,’” the president said at a fundraiser Tuesday night for Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.). “The day has passed when I expected this to be a full partnership.”

There is hardly any “room for cooperation” in the Republican Party, Obama said."

I can't believe that Obama hasn't known it all along. It's about time, however, that he has acknowledged that even pretending that things were any different just enables the Republican party to carry on their malignant charade of being decent Americans.

Get Ready For It- It's Coming

Been following the Republicans' idiotic, malicious tantrum over the notion that Barack Obama offered Joe Sestak a job when Sestak wanted to run for the Senate? This perverted fit is a warning of something, I guarantee you:

If the Republicans take back the House of Representatives in November, Obama is going to be impeached.

If you haven't figured this out yet, well, you heard it here first. Everything they have done has been aimed at building up a mountain of anger toward Obama, and unfortunately, the pathetic, supine Democrats let them get away with it with Clinton, so now they are getting ready to do it again. It doesn't matter what they impeach him for, any more than it mattered with Clinton. They will pick whatever disgusting pretext they want, and off they will go.

We are entering a time in our country's history when one party considers it to be its perfect right to destroy the elected officials of the other party, regardless of the cost. If this becomes the accepted way that our government operates, many of us will live to see the end of the United States, destroyed by people screaming all the way about what great, patriotic Americans they are.

Update: Jonathan Bernstein, from the Washington Post:

"Here comes impeachment...I continue to believe that if Obama sits in the White House for six years with a GOP majority in the House of Representatives that the odds are very good -- better than 50 percent -- that he'll be impeached. Not convicted, of course, but impeached, forcing a Senate trial.

Of course...against impeachment is the lack of a serious offense by the president, but I don't see that as a major impediment -- if offering a job to a potential Senate candidate is an impeachable offense, then they'll have no trouble at all coming up with something."

Amen, brother. Coming to you this November- the choice between democratic government and fascist chaos.

Wingnut Wrapup

Man, the right wingers have been bugging me lately. I hate to waste time dealing with the same pathetic lies over and over again. Oh well, someone has to do it, and better a parrot than a human.

One gigantic phony claim has been all over the right wing web lately- the notion that Obama, by offering an administration job to Joe Sestak, rather than have him fight it out with Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania, somehow committed a gigantic act of corruption. I don't know when it became a crime for the President of the United States to offer someone a job, but practically every right wing website has been screaming for "investigations" of this simple, perfectly normal act. Many of them are actually calling for Obama to be impeached for having the gall to ask a member of his own party to come to work in the White House. One example:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Dick Morris: Sestak Bribery Scandal Is Impeachable Offense- “It is illegal to offer someone anything of importance or value in return for a vote, or running or not running for office.”

Really? It's illegal to offer someone another job if they want to run for the Senate? Who knew?

I'm not going to bother you with any more examples, since this lunatic notion has shorter legs than a Corgi dog.

Well, on to the usual assortment of hate-filled delusion:

Stephanie Fried, Pajamas Media: "Always Defiant, West Bank Settlers Feel Abandoned...Soon after the second intifada erupted, Medan and three friends — all in their mid-twenties — founded Avigail. The four had all been raised on West Bank settlements and dreamed of one day starting their own community. But government approval for new settlement building was not forthcoming, so the only way to go in 2001 was illegal. Squat and stake a claim."

So, they "started their own community" by stealing someone else's land, and now they are angry that the State of Israel won't aid them in their criminal behavior. Sorry guys- even the right wing ass Netanyahu isn't dumb enough to get mixed up in that one.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Jindal Furious: Rips Obama For Dismal Response to Oil Spill Disaster"

Oh. Now he wants help from Obama. Remember when he wouldn't touch federal money with a stick? In case you've forgotten, that was when it would help poor people. Now that Jindal wants the Federal Government to pay to clean up an oil company's mess, that's a different story. Good thing Jindal didn't let Obama spend the money on American citizens, so it's still there to give to BP.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "State-Run Media Now Comparing Arizona Law to Tiananmen Square Massacre"

Leaving aside the fact that they are doing no such thing, I just want to point out that the TV networks and newspapers have now become the "state-run media," or at least I see this phrase over and over again from wingnuts. When did that happen? I mean, I know Obama took over all of the hospitals and car companies, but when did he take over Fox and CNN? I must have missed that one.

Christopher Grey, World Net Daily: "Why gov't, media, corporations, celebs embrace 'green' scam"

Because it isn't a scam? Because they want their grandchildren to live in a decent world? That's my guess.

You know it's funny that it is always the Republicans that furiously object when people call this country a democracy, and angrily insist that it is not a democracy but a republic.

Clayton E. Cramer, Pajamas Media: "Sensible libertarians acknowledge that a free market is not enough to end all racial discrimination — and that a certain amount of it is the price we pay for living in a free society. This is a fine argument to make as an abstract principle — but it isn’t a path to political victory."

And God knows, treating people decently is something a Republican would never contemplate, if it "isn’t a path to political victory."

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Tea Party protesters greeted the Binge-Spender in Chief yesterday at his San Francisco fundraiser."

And here they are. What do you see there, four dozen? Six dozen? Obama spoke a couple of weeks ago at the University of Michigan stadium. They gave away 80,000 tickets in two hours. The tea party is such a joke, or at least it would be if the damned "state-run" media would only tell the truth for a change.

Henry Lamb, Renew America: "Rand is Right...An individual who uses his own resources to invest in a risky business should have the absolute right and authority to decide to whom he will provide services."

To hell with the niggers.

World Net Daily EXCLUSIVE! "Finally, lawmakers to hear 'Bilderberg conspiracy' Author sees opportunity to bring 'shadow government' into mainstream"

God, what next? Some damned Republican congressman like Michelle Bachmann reading from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion on Fox News? How far does this have to go before enough is enough?

Astute Bloggers: "ANOTHER SIGN OF THE ENDTIMES FROM GREECE?!? Greek officials say a horde of frogs has forced the closure of a key northern highway for two hours...FROGS ARE A WELL-KNOWN PLAGUE"

A plague of frogs. I wonder why God decided to send a plague of frogs to Greece. I just don't get it. Get back to me if he kills all of your first born children and I might decide that you are on to something here.

Astute Bloggers: "Our War-time president is skipping memorial Day ceremonies. Our War-time president is skipping memorial Day ceremonies. REPEAT: Our War-time president is skipping memorial Day ceremonies."

As did Reagan and George W. Bush. Of course it wasn't communist treason when they did it.

Stimulus Worked- Who Knew?

Courtesy of a friend, here is the most important story that I have heard for a long time:

"Stimulus Raised GDP by Up to 4.2% in First Quarter: CBO

The massive U.S. stimulus package put up to 3.4 million people to work and boosted GDP by up to 4.6 percent in the first three months of 2010, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said on Tuesday."

But of course, while Obama and the Democrats were succeeding at this Herculean task, the Republicans were succeeding too- they have succeeded in convincing large parts of the American people that the stimulus was a colossal failure, and that Obama is utterly incompetent, so we should turn control of our economy back to the people who destroyed it.

Sad to say, it's a tossup whether the truth or Republican lies will win the day next November.

Wingnut Details Obama's Failings (Again)

Oh my God, oh my God! Those evil Democrats are at it again! This just in, from the great Confederate Yankee:

"Spending-Crazed Congress About to Pass Bill That Creates Billions in Taxes, Billions More in Spending, And Wrecks the Economy... Media Deathly Quiet

How much more of this graft, tax and spend Congressional abuse can the economy stand before imploding? I can only hope that when all is said and done, and this nation's economy collapses under the weight of their ever-present greed, that Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama get their just desserts."

And just what Democratic monstrosity is Mr. Hoft talking about?

"The bill:

* increases infrastructure spending by $26 B over ten years;"

Spending $2.6 billion a year on our infrastructure which is rotting beneath our feet because of years of mismanagement by the Bush Administration, which gave the money away in tax cuts for the rich and useless wars.

" * extends a raft of expiring tax provisions, mostly for one year"

The crime of actually trying to pay for his programs, rather than let wealthy people just take the money, which would be a much more sound fiscal policy.

"* provides funding relief for certain employer pension plans;"

The even worse crime of trying to protect ordinary Americans who had their retirement incomes destroyed, so that Wall Street hedge fund managers could become billionaires.

" * raises a bunch of taxes, mostly on businesses and a certain kind of partnership income called "carried interest;"

"Carried interest-" do you know what that means? It means that Obama wants hedge fund managers to actually pay income tax on their income, rather than claiming nonsensically that it is some form of capital gains. It means making a guy who makes two or three hundred million a year mismanaging other people's money pay taxes just like you. What a crime!

"* extends unemployment insurance benefits, increasing federal spending by $47 B over the next two years;"

The rich get the benefit and workers can just pay the price. To hell with people who saw their companies destroyed by the rapacity of their bosses. They're on their own.

"* increases Medicare payments for doctors for eighteen months at a $63 B cost;"

Paying doctors. Disgusting.

"* increases health insurance subsidies for the unemployed (through "COBRA") by $8 B over the next two years; and"

Increasing COBRA funding so that people who have lost their jobs through Republican plundering of the economy can at least keep their health insurance. And the cost! $4 billion a year! What will that leave to pay for oil spills?

"* increases federal Medicaid spending by $24 B for a six-month policy change."

Actually paying our bills instead of the Republican strategy of stealing the money and then leaving our children stuck with the cost.

Abominable, isn't it? Better to use ten times this much money, starting a war against North Korea, letting BP off the hook for the ten or twenty billion dollars of damage it caused, sending thousands of useless troops to the Arizona border, and continuing to give grotesque tax cuts to the rich.

These are truly malignant people. Spending which is motivated by the most common human decency is an abomination, but it is just great to plunder our entire national wealth to further enrich the parasite class that destroyed our economy while taking billions and billions for itself. And yet the teabagging suckers out there lap it up when the likes of Sarah Palin and Rand Paul cram it down their throats. How can people be so blind?

Looking for an Education?

While doing what I laughably call "research" for one of my right wing posts, I came across this website:

In God's name, what kind of legal education are you likely to get at this place?

Update: Maybe tomorrow I will bring you more news from the website that has this vital information on it:

"Learn the identity and see never before published photos of the San Francisco Zodiac Killer, The Boston Strangler & the real 2001 Anthrax Mailer Killer.

All 3 have never been caught. All 3 are the same madman, SS Nazi war criminal terrorist CIA assassin, Dr. Josef Mengele! "

These are both sites that push tax avoidance theories like those advanced by Jerry Kane. God help us all.

Oh well, I suppose we should be thankful that they didn't call it the Joseph Goebbels school of Public Administration.

As Usual...

Paul Krugman has it right again:

"that the idea that enough time has passed that we can’t blame Bush is especially wrong-headed given the nature of our problems. We’re in the aftermath of a financial crisis — and there’s overwhelming evidence that recovery from financial crises is almost always protracted and difficult. There’s no way one should have expected everything to be fine until the Lehman failure lies years in the past. In fact, the return of job growth we’ve already seen is ahead of schedule compared with the historical average.

And one thing is clear: the financial crisis occurred on Bush’s watch. To demand that everyone let Bush off the hook for where we are now because 16 months have passed under his successor is to defy the overwhelming evidence of history."

It is vitally important that we not let Bush off the hook for this disaster. This is not for political reasons, but until it is made clear that it is not just Bush, but the eternal Republican economic program which he implemented that caused not just this latest economic collapse, but the Great Depression too.

Otherwise, the Republicans may very well succeed in stampeding the American people into taking power away from the current incumbents and returning it to themselves, so they can continue their nearly-completed job of wrecking us all.

It is not political pettiness that places the responsibility for the economic collapse on the Bush administration- it is the simple truth.

Just a Thought

" Roosevelt turned corporate opposition into a badge of honor: “I welcome their hatred,” he declared. It’s time for President Obama to find his inner F.D.R., and do the same."

-P. Krugman

Drill, Baby, Drill

From a local newspaper on the Gulf Coast- apparently this story is not of national interest:

"WASHINGTON -- Gulf Coast senators are pressing federal regulators to resume processing permits for off-shore drilling in shallow waters, saying that a moratorium imposed earlier this month is too broad...It echoes concerns raised last week by the International Association of Drilling Contractors...the Texas-based trade group said that wells drilled in shallow water typically take 15-45 days. Because of the moratorium, it said, "rigs completing wells in the next weeks will be unable to take on new work."

The Senators? All Republicans, apparently. Surprised?

In related news, the International Association of Heroin Dealers has asked that the moratorium on retail heroin sales be lifted, because if their current supplies run out, they will be unable to take on new work.

Could it Be?

One last thought about Billy James Hargis: Could these be two pictures of the same person?

I mean, could it be? Is Billy James Hargis really Blind Lemon Jefferson?

A View Through a Dim Mirror, into the Conservative Past

I want to continue my little series about fringe right wing ideology with a discussion of the emergence of right wing talk radio in the late fifties and sixties. This is a subject that has received very little attention, and I have found it difficult to put together a lot in the way of facts about it. It is an important subject, I think, because it is a crucial part in how the right in this country cultivated generations of people who were willing to mindlessly accept the teachings of their leaders.

I started listening to these people in the mid-sixties, primarily on radio station KXEL in Waterloo Iowa, which was a very powerful clear-channel station that could be heard throughout much of the midwest, and which carried primarily religious programming. It had a sister station in Tijuana called XEL, which in addition to carrying much of the same programming, became famous as the home of Wolfman Jack.

Religious broadcasting first emerged in the early days of radio. The first religious radio "star" was the con-artist Aimee Semple McPherson in the early 20's; many others quickly followed her. The mixture of religion and right wing politics was by no means unknown before the 50's- the most notorious figure in this genre is certainly the Nazi propagandist Father Charles Coughlin, who broadcast pro-German and anti-semitic tirades until 1942, when he was finally silenced by the Catholic Church. This sort of thing tamped down the mixture of politics, religion and radio for a while, and (as far as I can tell) religious radio broadcasts pretty much stayed away from politics until a new generation of characters arose on these stations in the late fifties.

Some of these were ostensibly religious characters, whose background was in evangelism, who became more and more political as time went on. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Reverend Carl McIntyre: Mcintyre started his program, The Twentieth Century Reformation Hour, as a non-political religious show. Over time he became more and more political, railing against Liberals, Communism, socialized medicine, sex education and other conservative causes of the day, like fluoridation.

Reverend William Stuart McBirnie: McBirnie was an itinerant evangelist who eventually settled in Glendale California, one of the wacko capitals of America, and built a very large church which still looms over the 134 freeway. Like McIntyre, he became more and more political, eventually having a show called the Voice of Americanism, which was almost entirely devoted to justifying extreme right wing positions.

A little publication of Rev. Mc Burnie

Billy James Hargis:
Hargis was a very colorful character and seems to be a little more remembered than the two guys above. He actually has a Wikipedia page, from which I will take the liberty of quoting:

"A motto of Hargis was "All I want to do is preach Jesus and save America". He was convinced that the perils that he saw threatening America was part of a conspiracy, which he identified with Communism. Hargis saw the national and world events as part of a cosmic struggle, where the ultimate actors were Christ and Satan. While Communism represented the latter, America, in Hargis' view, was the object of God's love and should return to the Christian ideals he believed it was founded on. He had a "simplistic conception of Americanism consisting of a vague notion of Protestant Fundamentalism and an idealization of the virtues of republicanism". Hargis was also a member of the John Birch Society, and making his pro-segregation stance clear, accusing Martin Luther King Jr. of being a Communist-educated traitor..."

Hargis, in what will be no surprise to observers of such characters today, met a predictable fate:

"In 1974, Hargis announced that he would step down from most of his activities, including resignation from the presidency of American Christian College, due to health problems. However, a sex scandal erupted at the College the same year, involving claims that Hargis had had sex with four males and one female student. In fact, a couple he married found out on their wedding night that he had deflowered both of them."

What is important to note here is that all of these people originated as evangelical Christians and then led their followers into the world of right wing thought. Evangelical Christianity was, and is, a very "top-down" religion. It was accepted in evangelical Christian circles that pastors speak the word of the lord, and that their pronouncements were not to be challenged by the congregation (hardly an unusual concept in many religions.) Thus, these people were propagandizing to an audience which had had its capacity for critical thinking desensitized- an audience that was ripe for manipulation. This was not, as is generally assumed today, a case of right wing politicians exploiting the uneducated masses- the modern conservative movement grew out of fundamentalist religion, not the other way around. In truth, the likes of William F. Buckley never reached any more than a minute segment of the American people, compared to the above characters.

However, it was not long before right wing political figures realized the opportunity that these ostensibly religious stations offered. A classic example of this was the figure of one Melvin Munn, on the Life Line radio show. Here is a sample of Munn's view of himself:
"He is a Christian and writes on many religious subjects. He is also a loyal American who isn't afraid to shoot straight at drugs, one-world government, inflation, gun control, welfare, school textbooks, United Nations, etc. neither does man have the right to use government and the law, in the name of charity, to force the unwilling to do that which he would not do if the choice were his. Before any citizen concludes that the poor have a better life under state welfare than their counterparts had under true charity one hundred years ago, he should examine the present and investigate the past." Congress has no right to give charity. The people have delegated to Congress, by the Constitutuion, the power to do certain things. To do these, it is authorized to collect and pay moneys, and for nothing else. Everything beyond this is usurpation, and a violation of the Constitution."
Here you have a classic 60's style statement of the notions that infect the teabag movement today- "tentherism," an ingnorant, mean-minded interpretation of the constitution to deny the government the right to aid anyone but themselves, hatred of taxes, obsession with nonexistent threats to the second amendment, even manipulation of school textbooks to force future citizens to accept the views of the right; and all justified on the basis that Munn is a good Christian.

An innocent but deluded figure? Well, the Life Line program was actually funded by the Texas oil billionaire H. L. Hunt, regarded as the richest man in the world at the time, and a wonderful parallel to current tea party backers and funders of right wing causes, and also Texas oil billionaires, the Koch brothers. It was never anything but a front to push their self-serving propaganda on the ignorant.

What is important to understand about all of this is that the extreme right as it exists today grew out of evangelical Christianity, and not the other way around. A pre-existent mass of ignorant, gullible people found a place on the political spectrum that suited their greedy, self-absorbed and self-righteous views. And they have, unfortunately, hundreds of years of religious experience in how to breed a compliant, ignorant following.

Note: Because of the lack of documentary material about this period, a good deal of this is based on my own recollections. If anyone can correct or add to what I've had to say, please let me know.

A Taste of "Sovereign Citizen" Thinking

In my post on the recent episode of right wing terrorism, I mentioned the "Sovereign Citizen" movement, of which the murderer Jerry Kane was an adherent. I think it is worthwhile to know something about them, so here are a few excerpts from a screed apparently written by Mr. Kane, which features the gist of their "thinking." If, for some unknown reason, you would like to torment yourself by reading the whole thing, you can find it in PDF format here.

"Most people are not aware that there has been no lawful money since the bankruptcy of the United States in 1933."

The bankruptcy of the United States in 1933. Funny, I never even heard of that, despite having read numerous books on the depression. Why do you think that might be?

"Since House Joint Resolution 192 (HJR 192) (Public law 7310) was passed in 1933 we have only had debt, because all property and gold was seized by the government as collateral in the bankruptcy of the United States. Most people today would think they have money in their hand when they pull something out of their pocket and look at the paper that is circulated by the banks that they have been told is “money”. In reality they are looking at a “Federal Reserve Note” which is stated right on the face of the piece of paper we have come to know as “money”. It is NOT really “money”, it is debt, a promise to pay made by the United States!

When FDR and Congress took all the property and gold from the people in 1933 they had to give something in return for that confiscation of property. See attached (Exhibit “B” para 6) What the people got in return was the promise that all of their needs would be met by the government "

All of their needs met by the government. Get it? That would be communism. Roosevelt was a communist. That's why you don't have to pay your mortgage. Makes sense, huh?

"You actually just paid for your own home with your promissory “Mortgage Note” that you gave the bank and the bank gave you what in return? NOTHING!!! For any contract to be valid there must be consideration given by both parties."

You paid for your home, and the bank gave you NOTHING? Sorry to point this out, you stupid dick, but what the bank gave you in return was YOUR HOUSE! So, spout your stupid pseudo-legalese talk about "consideration." The consideration you got was your house.

"All of their debts would be “discharged”. This was done without the consent of the people of America and was an act of Treason by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt."

Oh sure. Treason. Right. Well, what do you expect from a communist?

"The problem comes in where they never told us how we could accomplish that discharge and have what we were entitled to after the bankruptcy."

Which was apparently everything for free. A true self reliant conservative, showing the noble sense of personal responsibility which features so prominently in their constant nattering.

"Why has this never been taught in the schools in this country? "

Maybe because it is a stupid lie that no one who is not deeply deranged could believe? I mean, kids in school today get taught all sorts of stupid lies (see Texas) but not ones that are this stupid.

It has always been my contention that conservatism in the United States today is about one thing and one thing only: greed. All of the rest is nothing but window dressing to hide this fact.
Conservatives don't want to pay their taxes, they don't want to pay their debts, and they sure as hell don't want to pay one penny to help anyone else on earth. Follow that degraded instinct and this is where you end up.

A Sordid Right Wing Tale with a Very Unhappy Ending

If you remember back a few months ago to the jerk who tried to light his underwear on fire on an airplane, or the moron recently who tried to blow Times Square up with store-bought fireworks and a couple of propane tanks, you will recall about fifty thousand stories in the mainstream media about these guys, accompanied by about a million and a half belligerent racist screeds from the wingnuts. Funny, isn't it, that yesterday's story about a couple of maniacs who actually murdered two policemen in Arkansas- more non-military casualties in our country than Al Qaida has managed in nine years- is receiving practically no attention at all. The New York Times, for example, managed to cover it on page 8. The L.A. Times didn't think the story was worth any space at all. And as for the wingnuts, I checked all my usual sources, and the only coverage of this shooting was from Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit, who made the mistake of hopping on this story before the facts came out, when he felt confident in asserting that these criminals were illegal alien drug dealers.

Not Green Eagle. I intend to explain exactly who these guys are, so you can consider why the press doesn't think them worth any attention. This will be a long post, so please bear with me.

The lead murderer, Jerry Kane Jr. was not a totally unknown character. The press describes him as travelling around the country delivering lectures on how to avoid foreclosure. In fact, he is part of a decades-old "sovereign citizen" movement, which advances various patently lunatic reasons why people don't have to pay their taxes or debts, based on the notion that the federal government is somehow illegitimate (the details of the explanations vary somewhat) and therefore it has no right to collect taxes, or that perhaps, in the case of people like Kane, it does not even have the authority to issue currency, so all dollar-denominated debts are fictitious. This sort of thing flourished in the eighties and nineties and was closely associated with the militia movement. It formed a staple at that time of what we would today call "wingnut" thinking, and is an obvious predecessor of the tea party movement.

Now, the vehicle that the Kanes were driving has an interesting history. It is registered to a church in New Vienna, Ohio called the "House of God's Prayer." This church claims to have been defunct for several years, and claims that the van was stolen, although it never reported it missing. Interestingly, the "church" was located in a storefront that was also the headquarters of the local Ku Klux Klan.

This church was headed until his death by a man by the name of Harold "Ray" Redfeairn, who himself has a somewhat interesting history. Let me quote from a research paper from the Southern Poverty Law Center:

"In 1979, after holding up a car dealership and a motel, Redfeairn shot 22-year-old Dayton, Ohio, police officer Dave Koenig (see At Death's Door) three times after Koenig stopped him.

According to Koenig, Redfeairn then kneeled over Koenig and held the gun to his head, saying at one point, "You fucking pig, you think you're so bad now, eh?" Koenig was hit in the neck, shoulder and liver, surviving thanks to the bulletproof vest he was wearing.

Redfeairn became the Ohio state leader for the neo-Nazi Aryan Nations in 1992, serving until 1998...Redfeairn told the court he had quit the group because Butler advocated non-violence — testimony that was undermined when the plaintiffs played a video showing Redfeairn in (Aryan leader Richard) Butler's pulpit, with Butler standing nearby, saying that "to grab an AK-47 or an m16 and run and plug some nigger in the head" was an act of "conscience" that he "won't condemn."

In late 2001, Butler named Redfeairn as his successor."

Richard Butler, of course, being the head of the Aryan Nations, at their compound in Hayden Lake Idaho, before his death in 2004.

This is not the only connection between this "church" and Butler, or its only brush with shooting at police. To continue our tale, we have to turn to the story of one of my all time favorite right wing maniacs, Chevie Kehoe.

From the Dayton Crime Examiner:

"A strange twist to this story may remind residents in southwest Ohio of a similar incident that occurred in 1997. In that incident, an Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper stopped an SUV on the west side of Wilmington, Ohio. During a struggle, the trooper and a sheriff's deputy exchanged gunfire with the two occupants of the vehicle. The occupants were later identified as Chevie and Cheyne Kehoe. The Kehoe's had connections to white-supremacy and the Aryan Peoples Republic militia. During that time, the national chapter of the Aryan Nation was located in New Vienna, Ohio, just south-east of Wilmington. The Aryan Nation was lead by Harold "Ray" Redfeairn...The group operated in New Vienna under the name of the Church of Jesus Christ Christian....Although rumors abounded about the possible connection between the church in New Vienna and the Kehoe brothers, that connection was never proven."

The Kehoes listed their residence at the time as being in (surprise) Hayden Lake, Idaho. I guess it was just mere coincidence that found them in close proximity to Redfeairn's church. Kehoe ended up serving life in prison for another right wing-related murder. To continue with the article:

"How does today's shooting compare to the shooting in 1997 in Wilmington, Ohio? The van driven by the suspects in the West Memphis shooting had Ohio license plates that were registered to the church in New Vienna. The white-supremacy group has not officially operated in New Vienna for several years, but still has vehicles registered with that address."

For those who may not be aware, the Church of Jesus Christ Christian is actually a national movement which promotes a doctrine known as "dual seed Christianity," which claims that only white people are real human beings, the result of mating between Adam and Eve, and that Jews, Blacks, etc. are actually subhumans that were produced by Eve and Satan, after Eve ate the forbidden fruit. It is a common doctrine among the very far right in this country, particularly among white supremacists. I have been compiling information about this movement for some months now, and will have an amusing post concerning them soon.

In fact this man shares a great deal of right wing, secessionist, militia, teabag thinking, and the Republican party is seeing to it that there are as many more just like him as they can create.

Well, there you have it. A story that is becoming all too familiar, and people like Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin or Rush Limbaugh have absolutely no responsibility for it- none at all. A mere isolated incident, with no political ramifications at all, and certainly not worth our notice.

The Pauls- a Blast From the Past

While we are on the subject of the delightful racial views of the Paul family, perhaps it would be pleasant to take a stroll down memory lane, way back to 2004:

"Last week, Congress hailed the 40th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The heroic Ron Paul was the only member of Congress to vote No. Here is his statement. ~ Ed."

Well, not all of it. My readership is hardly large enough that I can afford to having you dying of boredom. Here's just a taste:

"Mr. Speaker, I rise to explain my objection to H.Res. 676... contrary to the claims of the supporters of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the sponsors of H.Res. 676, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 did not improve race relations or enhance freedom. Instead, the forced integration dictated by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 increased racial tensions while diminishing individual liberty."

Diminishing individual liberty of white people to keep those filthy Negroes out of their stores and restaurants. Of course, Mr. Paul has nothing to say about the individual liberty of those aforementioned Negroes to actually patronize those stores and restaurants- a liberty that is of apparently of no value in the considered reflection of Mr. Paul.

Now, as to increasing racial tensions from Whites toward Blacks, well, perhaps that is true. I suppose Blacks should have just kept to their place, rather than risking having whites feel increased tension.

Wingnut Wrapup- Special Astute Bloggers Edition

I thought it would be fun to see how much lying, tendentious, racist, hate-filled garbage could be fit into one website at one time. I know there are plenty of competitors I might have chosen, I thought I'd examine the (rather inappropriately named) "Astute Bloggers," which today features on its site, among other trash, the following. As to all the caps, sorry... I'm not in the business of retyping all of their posts so they don't look like mentally deficient dicks. At least I did unbold it all:

Astute Bloggers: "THEY'RE TRYING TO PALINIZE RAND PAUL AND PAINT HIM AS A RACIST...It won't work this year."

Too late. It's already worked.

1. I must have missed the part where the 9/11 flights took off from Maine.
2. Boy, it sure doesn't say very much for the current threat posed by Al Qaida that they've gone from multiple jet attacks to a failed car bombing involving store-bought fireworks.
3. Someone needs to grow up here.

Fears of government over-regulation and leftist policies apparently started the economic collapse when the government was committed to rightist policies and no regulation, long before the leftists took over. Apparently nothing is as good at predicting the future as fear.

Well, I don't know about joining with foreign leaders, but I remember this guy criticizing some American States in no uncertain terms. Of course, the Astute ones may very well wish that he had been impeached. He was so against "States' rights," after all. Get what I'm sayin' here?

Because, of course, there is no reason in the world that we should consider the interests of the actual injured party, South Korea, whose capitol is within artillery range of the North Korean army, and which can't figure out how to respond without endangering millions of its civilians. Who cares what they have to say. Whoopee, it's a chance for another war in which we can go hog wild destroying some country that has no way to endanger us personally, and is perfectly willing to take out their rage on innocent people in surrounding countries. I just love adult foreign policy.

Astute Bloggers: "IS THIS 1917 IN RUSSIA OR 2010 IN THE USA?

Aha! The SEIU held a demonstration at the home of a bank official. Yes, that's their crime! That is the equivalent of a violent revolution. That makes sense, yes sir.

There's lots more, but that's enough for today. Man there are a bunch of violent morons in this country.

Not a Double Standard in Reporting, No...

We've all heard over and over again that California's $20 billion dollar deficit is proof positive that liberal economics is a total failure (despite it's having been largely caused by conservative refusal to pay taxes in the form of the infamous prop. 187.)

Why is the story of Texas' $11 billion dollar deficit virtually nowhere to be seen? I guess that deficit doesn't prove anything, huh? No lessons to be learned there- it's just an accident, or maybe somehow liberals are to blame for that, too.

Perhaps we should ask Rand Paul for an explanation- it's probably the result of the unfair burden placed on the people of Texas by the cost of enforcing the Civil Rights Act.

New President, Yay!

Ken Starr has been picked as the new president of Baylor University!

Thank you, thank you , thank you, for getting this malignant, perverted piece of human garbage out of L.A!

An Immigration Suggestion

It's time for me to throw in my two cents about immigration.

In all of the millions of words that have been spilled on this subject, not once have I seen what I believe to be the obvious, central truth about this subject. That truth is that there is no answer to this problem to be found on our borders, nor inside the United States.

Immigration from poor areas to rich ones is like a force of nature, a tsunami whose force is in exact proportion to the disparity of income between the poor and the rich. Border enforcement, arrests, deportations- these have demonstrated themselves to be as much help in stemming illegal immigration as a sheet of cardboard would be in holding back the force of the ocean.

There is only one real, permanent answer to this problem: raising the standard of living in third world countries. Every nickel an hour we can add to the incomes of third world workers means not only that many more people that can live decently in their homelands, but it also means that many fewer jobs that will be exported from here to there. In fact, it is my opinion that there is no single thing that can do more to guarantee the long time security of our country and our way of life, than seeing to it that others around the world can live decent lives too.

This is the central reality of this problem that no one seems to want to recognize.

American workers need to face an unpalatable truth: As long as international corporations hold sway over our economy, there is going to be one of two outcomes. Look at the person living in a tin shack next to an open sewer in Jakarta or Nairobi: Either their income is going to come up to yours, or yours is going to go down to theirs. Take your pick.

That is why I advocate a true, meaningful program to reduce illegal immigration, based on enabling the poor in third world nations to live decent lives at home. Here it is:

1. I advocate devoting a third of our current largely wasted military budget to promoting unions in third world countries. This is a vital security interest of the United States, and the objections of those countries' universally corrupt governments should not deter us in any way. The higher wages are in those countries, the better for us as well as them.

2. I advocate a compensatory tariff on all imported goods, to be equal to the difference between the labor costs (and costs of environmental regulation) in these countries, and labor costs here. I would then tell their employers that the United States will refund the tariffs plus a 5 or 10% incentive payment, for raising their employees' wages. Much of this would be paid for out of the military savings I advocated above.

These measures would improve not only our own lives, but those of people all over the world; furthermore, they would be a repudiation of the conservative, dog-eat-dog notion that we can prosper only to the degree that others suffer. The only people who will lose under this system would be those who profit from the income disparity between the first and third world. These are powerful people who will fight like pit bulls to keep their filthy earnings, but what a joy it would be to see them lose out in the end.

Phony Republican Revolution Stumbles

Here's a quote, which I found at Daily Kos, which is so typical of mainstream reaction to Tuesday's elections that I think I will let it stand in for all of the many others I have seen expressing similar views:

"I’m still trying to figure out what happened," said Janine Parry, a political scientist at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, after the biggest night so far of the midterm election season. "It was really surprising."

Well, I am going to be self-promoting enough to point out that if you had read (and believed) what I have been saying the last year, you would have not been surprised at all.

I have long maintained that the teabag movement is largely a fiction- a propagandistic dumb show created by Republicans to create the appearance of a right wing surge. Here is one more proof that as ignorant as the American electorate may be, they are not quite stupid enough to turn the economy back to the people who wrecked it just two years ago.

I have shown again and again how tea party demonstrations largely consist of a laughably small number of people, inflated by conservatives, with the collaboration of the press, into major national events. Meanwhile, demonstrations on the left, such as the recent immigration marches around the country routinely attract tens or hundreds of times as many people, and are just as routinely ignored by the press.

The Republican party has committed one of the cardinal sins of politics- to believe your own propaganda. Now they have dug a deep hole for themselves, by falling for the notion that the teabaggers represent any kind of movement beyond a small group of racist, greedy jerks that don't want to pay taxes. It's time for the rest of us to get on with running the country.

Wingnut Wrapup- Election Edition

First, a word about what really happened yesterday. Two republicrats- Specter and Lincoln- ran into huge troubles from real Democrats, with Specter losing and Lincoln forced into a runoff which she will likely lose also. In the only Republican-Democratic matchup of the day, the Dem won strongly, despite weeks of Republican crowing about how they were going to take the seat. And on the Republican side, a candidate strongly supported by the party lost to a teabagger. That's a great day for the supposedly washed up Democratic party. Except here:

Town Hall: "Voters back anti-DC, anti-establishment candidates...With the electorate's intense anger reverberating across the country, this is all but certain: It's an anti-Washington, anti-establishment year. And candidates with ties to either better beware"

Except for real Democrats. They did just fine. Obama, are you listening?

Dick Morris, Town Hall: "The message of the May 18th primaries is that it is open season on incumbents...Both Specter and Lincoln are now reaping the harvest of their votes for health care."

That's why Specter and Lincoln did so poorly running against candidates who were much stronger supporters of health care legislation than they were.

Of course, let's not forget that Dick Morris only opens his mouth for two things: lies coming out and prostitutes' toes going in.

Red State: Let's just pretend it didn't happen. If we don't talk about it, it doesn't exist.

Confederate Yankee: "You can find pundits on both sides to spin the results as a victory or a disaster, but the simple fat of the matter is that last night's votes don't really amount to much, and November is very, very far away."

Of course. Democratic victories never mean much, do they?

Rick Moran, Pajamas Media: "Dems Counting 2010 Chickens with Egg on Their Face"

Another classic example of Republican projection. Of course, maybe Dems should be counting their chickens. If the Republicans win in November, they are going to need them to pay for medical care.

Newsmax: "Strong ‘Anti-Obama Vote’ in Results...election results are showing a strong “anti-Washington” and “anti-Obama” vote...if the Democrats don’t move quickly to the center, they are “going to pay a huge price” in Congressional elections"

If the Democrats don't move to the center...Thanks for the well meant advice guys, but seeing as how the more progressive candidate did great in every Democratic race, I think we'll make our own decisions

Renew America: No comment.

World Net Daily: No comment.

Can't handle the truth, huh?

C. Edmund Wright, American Thinker: "Another Very Bad Night for Obama, Democrats, and the Media... The biggest losers were Barack Obama and the current far-left Democrat Congress and their notion of a large and intrusive government."

See my comments above. Why repeat them. Dems winning is bad news for Democrats.

"Perhaps the worst news of the night for Team Obama was the Democrat win in the special election in Pennsylvania for Jack Murtha's seat...make no mistake: Yesterday's elections were definitely an extension of the conservative ascendancy that is taking hold in this country."

The worst news was when a Democrat won a seat that you guys have been crowing for weeks about stealing. You know what? I hope that's the worst news for Dems that we hear this year.

John J. Miller, National Review Online: "There are two kinds of senators: Republicans who don't like Specter and Democrats who don't like Specter," says a former leadership aide... Yesterday we were witnesses to its full truth: Democrats don't like Specter, either."

Which Democrats showed by voting him out of office. Republicans showed their dislike of Specter by re-electing him over and over again for thirty years.

Dan Riehl, a couple of days ago: "This is the race right now. If Burns wins, it's huge for the GOP. Even if Critz were to pull it out, that would not mean Democrats have turned it around. They're simply looking for anything to hang that hat on." "Winning PA-12 Is A Big Effin' Deal"

Today, it don't mean nuttin. And Dan's stickin' to that story.

One more Piece of Lingering Bush Ugliness

John Yoo in an "opinion" piece- linked to by Daily Kos:

Well, let's get this part of it out of the way first:

"When she served as dean of Harvard Law School, Kagan prohibited the U.S. military from recruiting students on campus"

This is, of course, one more Republican lie. Kagan did no such thing, as is perfectly well known by anyone who has followed this story. Now on to the money quote:

"What if a college dean barred from campus recruiting any law firm that provided free representation to al-Qaida terrorists? Suppose she believes that the firms are providing aid and comfort to the enemy in wartime. "

This man is allowed to be a professor of law at one of our major universities, and held a high position in the worst presidential administration ever, where he did immense damage to our nation's standing in the world, yet he apparently does not understand one of the most basic principles of American law: the right to counsel. Mr. Yoo, I am not a lawyer, but I can read:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."

Here we have the perfect Conservative "strict constructivist" with his commitment to the views of our founding fathers- as long as he can twist them into appearing to support whatever disgusting position he wants to take. Otherwise, the plain language and intent of the constitution is out the window without a second thought. These people are corrupt liars who do not want a democratic government, but rather a police state which exists solely for the benefit of the hyper rich, and to hell with the rest of us.

Bad News

From Newsmax, a bastion of conservative opinion:

"Analysis: Specter’s Defeat Bad News for Obama"

But don't worry- it's good news for McCain.

At least there are Democrats somewhere that actually want to be represented by a Democrat.

So far, the best thing for me about this whole thing was to see the look on Chris Matthews' face. He's so depressed that his Pennsylvania buddy didn't fool Democrats into voting for him.

And in further news: The Democratic candidate has won in the race to fill Rep. Murtha's seat in western Pennsylvania. This district is full of working class voters that used to be called "Reagan Democrats," who were a prime target to be swung to the Republican party. Wingnut blogs have been crowing for weeks about how the great Republican groundswell was going to take this seat. They were talking through their hats; and though we can expect the mainstream press to put any spin on this win than this one, this win is a sign that the Democrats are not facing a disaster in November, if they just conduct a good campaign.

Dems Not Invited to the Party?

From Andrew Breitbart's Big Government (remember them? they were the people behind the phony pimp and hooker- no need to link to them:)

"Progressives Behind New Michigan "Tea Party" brings news that paid petition circulators are collecting signatures to create ‘The Tea Party.’ According to site proprietor Chet Zarko, the paid circulators have ties to the Democratic Party.

...leave it to Mark Brewer and the Democratic Party to pull out all the stops in their cynical ploy to cling to power.

Situations like this were bound to happen, given the outrage seen in Americans today and the unhappiness with the Obama administration. But to see such a cynical campaign in the offing is no surprise, give the left appears to be behind it."

And here I believed the teabaggers all along, when they insisted that the tea parties were bipartisan organizations that were filled with members from both parties, not just a bunch of Republican lunatics.

You mean that Democrats are really not invited to the tea parties? This is a calamity! Now I am going to have to face the possibility that the teabaggers are nothing but a bunch of lying, self-serving Republicans-in-disguise, out to perpetrate one more fraud on the American people. Who would have ever thought that that could be true? I'm so disillusioned.

Our Country is Already in Hell

"JUNEAU, Alaska -- Bristol Palin is hitting the speakers' circuit and will command between $15,000 and $30,000 for each appearance, Palin family attorney Thomas Van Flein said Monday."

Boy, I bet there are a lot of other slutty, lying teen age mothers out there that would love to get that deal.

"...Bristol Palin will be selective in the speeches she gives."

Yeah, selecting whoever will pay her $15,000 to $30,000 for nothing.

"... she's interested in expanding her message beyond teen pregnancy to include...her parenting approach; and her outlook on life."

Expanding her message. What a laugh. Expanding it beyond "do what I say, not what I do," all the way to "I'll say anything if someone will pay me to do it."

Girls, just remember Bristol when you think you can't learn anything from your mother.

Another Republican Hypocrite- Who Could Have Predicted It?

These things just never stop:

"Eight-term Indiana Rep. Mark Souder announced his resignation Tuesday after admitting to an affair with a female aide who worked in his district office.

Souder, a Republican, will will step down on Friday. He said in remarks obtained by Fox News that he "sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff."

Not familiar with this guy? Souder, according to Fox News, was

"Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994..."

He has been described as the leading proponent in Congress of abstinence education.

Insanity in Action

Joseph Farah, at World Net Daily today:

"If we had to vote today for president and vice president and could choose anyone for those positions, I can tell you who would get my write-in votes – Sen. Jim DeMint and Rep. Michele Bachmann.

I have watched this pair closely and carefully over the last few years, and I have been impressed with their ideas, their courage, their consistency and their leadership.

This is a team that could excite the base, win the election and have the conviction to roll back the Obama destruction...I'm glad I was able to find a ticket that is not only viable, but enviable."

And he wonders why no one takes him seriously when he calls himself a journalist.

Euro Reaches Four Year Low

Yes, it's all over the news today. The Euro reached a four year low against the dollar.

I have not found a single article about this that is titled "Dollar reaches four year high against Euro." Why do you think that might be?

Maybe it would cut into the Republican narrative that Obama is totally incompetent in handling the economy? We're gaining jobs, the market has recovered, corporations are making profits for the first time in years, consumer confidence is up, the dollar is recovering from some of the disastrous collapse it suffered during the Bush era, but God forbid that anyone should admit that it is the Democrats that actually deal with the economy adequately. So they must come up with all sorts of reasons why this is all about Europe, and none of it has anything to do with Obama.

Another Sign of the Economic Failure of Obama

From the New York Times:

"DETROIT — General Motors said Monday it earned $865 million in the first quarter, its first profit since 2007, after last year’s government-sponsored bankruptcy allowed the carmaker to wipe away many of its longstanding burdens."

Of course, if we had followed the far more rational, mature and decent proposal of the Republican party, General Motors would no longer exist. But remember, there would probably be a big upside there- the foreign companies that sold us cars after GM's collapse wouldn't have to hire union workers, so they could make a whole lot more money to give away in executive bonuses.

Climate Scientists Must Be Lying Again

From NASA:

"It was the hottest April on record in the NASA dataset. More significantly, following fast on the heels of the hottest March and hottest Jan-Feb-March on record, it’s also the hottest Jan-Feb-March-April on record."

Here's Paul Krugman's plot of the data:

It will be interesting, over the next few weeks, to see conservatives evolve a lie to explain this away. Now it would be interesting to get people to see things like the global warming controversy alongside the quote in the post below, where Mitch McConnell is carrying the very polluted water for the oil companies, trying to get BP off the hook for the costs of their oil spill. This is about the same thing- trying to make multinational corporations pay for the damage they cause. If there is no global warming, there is no damage, so they get to make a whole lot more money. That is the total story of the global warming "debate-" their lies versus our facts, their money versus our lives.

Stupid Republican Suggestion of the Day

Mitch McConnell, on Meet the Press yesterday:

"MR. GREGORY: What about the issue of legitimate claims, as BP said, that it will honor? Do you think that the cap for damages should be higher now, higher than $75 million, as you heard Senator Schumer say they would propose?

SEN. McCONNELL: Well, the danger in that, of course, is that if you raise the cap too high, there will be no competition in the Gulf and you’ll leave all the business to the big guys like BP. What BP has said they need to be held to, which is they’re going to pay for this. They ought to pay for it, and they will pay for it. But the danger of taking the cap too high is that you end up with only massive, very large oil producers able to meet that cap and produce in the Gulf."

Well, let's just leave aside the issue of what business oil companies have drilling anywhere if they can't afford to pay for the damage they have caused. How about if we just ban offshore drilling totally, and then all the oil companies in the world can compete on an equal basis for nothing.

And by the way, Mitch, what kind of pathetic lie are you telling when you say that you think that BP will voluntarily pay for the billions in damages it caused? On what planet do you think that will ever happen? Or are you nothing but a corrupt shill for the oil companies, willing to say and do anything to get them off the hook for the damages they caused, while letting them make record profits for ever?

Saddest News of the Day

from the Wall Street Journal:

"In old-money enclaves like Palm Beach, Fla., Nantucket, Mass., and Greenwich, Conn., WASPs are being priced out of their waterfront estates and displaced on their nonprofit boards by Jewish, Catholic and other non-Protestant entrepreneurs."

Man, life is so unfair.

Wingnut Wrapup

Well, I can't go forever without a refreshing dive into the pool of insanity that is conservative thinking today. Here are a few of the stimulating thoughts that are swirling around the bowl (if you know what I mean) of wingnut scholarship today:

George Will, Town Hall: " By socializing the consequences of Greece's misgovernment, Europe has become the world's leading producer of a toxic product -- moral hazard."

What in the name of hell does that even mean? And this guy is supposed to be one of their top thinkers. Other than stringing together an unrelated batch of menacing terms (socializing...misgovernment...Europe...toxic...moral hazard) I can't see that it has any meaning at all. Oh well, conservative thought in action.

Salena Zito, Town Hall: "Polls across the board show that the more religiously observant people are, the more likely they are to disapprove of the president's job performance, says Mark Rozell, professor of public policy at George Mason University."

And I bet you are proud of that, huh, Salena? Let me restate that: the more religious people are, the more likely they are to have swallowed your right wing lies and smears about Obama. You guys have really improved the world with that accomplishment, huh? And by the way, this says a real lot about the value of religion, don't you think?

Confederate Wankee: "Left-Wing Think Progress Advocates Stripping Citizens of Constitutional Rights Without Benefit of Trial, Conviction, or Notice of Even Being A Suspect"

Oh my God, oh my God!!!!!!!! What could they be thinking of doing now?

"They couch their plea in an incredulous and deceptive pitch, asking:"...if those on the terrorist watch list should be able to purchase firearms..."

Of course, right wingers who advocate kicking Muslims and latinos out of the country en masse, or just stripping them of citizenship without a trial, or torturing them or putting them in prison for years without charges... well, that's just wonderful. But not letting them buy guns- that is an abomination. Who would have ever thought that we would see something so evil in the good ol' U.S. of A?

Confederate Yankee: "Ammo Shortage Continues...It started before Obama was elected, and shows no signs of abating."

Well, at least there's some good news on the wingnuttosphere today.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit: "Jan Brewer & Sarah Palin Hold Joint Press Conference Today on Border Security"

Oh God, will our trials never end? What in the universe could possibly come out of that to help us? And where was Sarah's newest BFF, Michelle Bachmann?

Michael Reagan, Newsmax: "The Days of Carefree Spending Are Over"

Because Democrats are in office and they want to spend the money on economic stimulus and health care and useless things like that, which hardly benefit rich people at all! Just wait until the Republicans are back in power, and the days of carefree spending on tax cuts for the wealthy, and useless wars can return. Whoopee!

Henry Lamb, Renew America: "Obama is on a mission to transform the government of the United States of America into a government based on Marxist principles, acting to achieve Marxist objectives, using the Marxist tactic: whatever it takes."

Sure, sure, Henry. God, Alan Keyes hates Obama. He employs a whole stable of people to churn out lies like this, at his website. Amazing what a little hate can lead you to do.

Jayme Sellards, American Thinker: "What Exactly Is 'Social Justice'? It sort of sounds good, until you think about it."

Yeah, it sounds great until you think about it. 'Social justice.' Once you mull it over, it sort of sucks, huh? I mean really, who would want that? Unless you're the target of the injustice, and we know who we are talking about there*, so who cares, right?

And now, this vitally important news, from our long-time friend, Henry Makow:

"The concept of an invading alien force will bring the entire planet together in a united effort to repel the danger. This, of course, will make us one government, one currency and one religion. The mechanism for this is being put in place, even as we speak: Project Blue Beam.

"The infamous NASA Blue Beam Project has four different steps in order to implement the new age religion with the Antichrist at its head. We must remember that the new age religion is the very foundation for the new world government, without which religion the dictatorship of the new world order is completely impossible.

The Blue Beam Project will pretend to be the universal fulfillment of the prophecies of old, as major an event as that which occurred 2,000 years ago. In principle, it will make use of the skies as a movie screen (on the sodium layer at about 60 miles) as space-based laser-generating satellites project simultaneous images to the four corners of the planet in every language and dialect according to the region. It deals with the religious aspect of the new world order and is deception and seduction on a massive scale."

And you thought the oil spill was bad news.

*Hint for those who don't follow conservative thought that closely: They mostly have darker skin than real Americans.

A Marriage Made In Heaven

Can you get a better couple than this:

Orly and Michelle- together at last. More Crazy than anyone has a right to put in one place.

Newt Explains How to Run Things:

From Americablog, this sage advice from the disgraced, corrupt, adulterous former congressman, on Fox News:

"There will be no need for the Senate to waste their time interviewing President Barack Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court if Newt Gingrich has his way. Fox News' Chris Wallace asked Gingrich Sunday what he thought of the nomination of Elena Kagan.

"I think the president should withdraw it," said Gingrich. "You don't need a lot of hearings."

Damned right. And he should withdraw every candidate until he picks one that meets with the approval of this filthy crook. Maybe Joe the Plumber, huh?

Because Democrats never have a mandate to carry out their duty. The mandate in this country belongs by right to people like Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh, and if you try to take it away from them, say by the grossly unfair strategy of winning elections, get ready for one huge tantrum.

But Wait- There's More:

"Wallace: You also write this on the screen: "The secular socialist machine represents as great a threat to America as Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union once did." Mr. Speaker, respectfully, isn't that wildly over the top?

Gingrich: No"

Words fail me (which they so rarely do) to express how contemptible this kind of talk, from an alleged major party leader, is. We aren't even allowed to criticize Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, without a storm of abuse from the right. But it's just fine for a former congressional leader to compare Obama to Stalin and Hitler. Where, oh where, does this all end?
