I saw a headline that gave me a laugh:

"Rick Perry to Attend Next Five Debates"

When have we ever had to suffer through endless meaningless "debates" like this?  These are not debates; they are free commercials designed to give the press an excuse to provide national news coverage to a bunch of clowns that have done absolutely nothing to deserve our attention.  And of course, the press plays along, pretending that there is something newsworthy in the sight of a bunch of Republicans spouting the same self-serving lies that they have told for decades, and which have put our country in the condition it is today.

Obama has not been a particularly strong President, but the notion that any of these fools could possibly be a viable alternative to him is just crazy.  Yet, the press is going to continue to serve the Republican party and its rich masters by doing everything it can to make ignorant voters think that it would be a really good idea to turn our country back over to them, four years after they destroyed our economy.

It Remains Unclear

The Huffington Post reports:

"WASHINGTON -- The family of Gabe Zimmerman, the congressional aide to Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) who was killed in the Tucson shootings in January, sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday urging him to allow a House vote on a stalled resolution that would name a room in the Capitol Visitor Center after Gabe.

The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), has more than 350 cosponsors and doesn't cost taxpayers anything, save the costs of hanging a sign outside of a room. Still, it hasn't moved since it was filed in July for reasons that remain unclear to just about anyone."

It remains unclear to just about anyone?   What kind of idiot could say that?  Just for the record, let me state that it is one hundred percent clear that the Republican party is composed of a collection of corrupt, evil pigs that can't allow Democrats even the simple dignity of honoring one of their own who was mowed down by a terrorist, let alone give up the voluntary Republican slavery to the rich long enough to save the country.

I can't be bothered to link to the rest of this nonsense.  Who could possibly want to read any more of it?

How to Get a AAA Bond Rating...

...In one easy lesson, courtesy of Former Dittohead, via Kos:

"Only Countries with Socialized Medicine have AAA Bond ratings.

AAA countries according to Standard & Poor’s

    Hong Kong
    Isle of Man
    United Kingdom"

One more outrageous Republican lie- that we can only insure a sound economy by screwing ordinary people- demolished by the facts. Hardly a new phenomenon, but every one of their lies has ten more standing behind it ready to take their turn.

Wingnut Wrapup

 Life through the looking glass:

To begin with, the award for the first right winger out of the box with the usual anti-global warming lies, since the Koch-funded Berkeley study revealed the climate scientists to be right all along:

Michael Barone, Town Hall:  "Cult of Global Warming Is Losing Influence"

Well, it turns out that it is the people on Michaels's side that have been lying all along, which is not surprising, because they are all financed by oil companies, but what's a little lying between friends, huh?

Katie Kieffer, Town Hall:  "Sex Sells Socialism...When all else fails, sex sells. The only way to sell the American public on socialism is to use sex appeal because socialism does not appeal to reason or justice. And watching handsome high rollers head to prison is no doubt an Occupy Wall Streeter’s notion of ultimate bondage sex appeal."

Not my definition of sex, but there you go.  And who is this Katie woman?

"Katie Kieffer is a conservative multimedia personality, writer and public speaker.

Katie graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of St. Thomas. As a college freshman, she wrote an opinion column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. During her sophomore year of college, Katie founded, edited and published a nationally recognized student journal of thought and opinion called the St. Thomas Standard. Katie also developed a comprehensive website for the newspaper so that all of the articles were available online.

Katie has over six years of experience in commercial real estate. Before launching into multimedia, she chaired a National NAIOP Young Professionals Forum of rising stars in commercial real estate and traveled across the country learning about different geographic business climates and development trends."

Quite the resume, huh?  Just a hint:  When people are still listing in their resume things they did when they were a college freshman, chances are they don't really have the economic credentials of, say, a Nobel Prize winning Princeton economics professor.  Oh, by the way, here's Katie's picture:

Of course, it's the left that's obsessed with sex to the point of abandoning their better judgment.

Let's move on to a little of the gracious right wing reaction to the removal of one of the world's worst dictators, by Obama and a NATO coalition:

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi has been killed.   Now, Sarah Palin is giving credit to presidential candidate Ron Paul..."

Yes, Ron Paul, who was openly against the whole thing from the beginning, and attacked Obama every step of the way.  No credit to Obama.  Oh no, all of the kudos go to a teabag idiot who did absolutely nothing.  To no one's surprise, the Quitter easily takes the award for most offensive denial of credit to Obama.

Raymond Ibrahim, Pajamas Media:  "Gaddafi Dead — So What?...Gaddafi, Mubarak, Bin Laden — even Obama — are not causes but symptoms of their societies."

Obama got these guys out, and so it is meaningless.  Oh, and by the way, he is just like dictators and terrorists.  Yeah, that's the story.  Bin Laden, Obama...same thing.

Mona Charen, Town Hall:  "Two successful assassinations -- those of al-Awlaki and bin Laden -- have persuaded some that President Obama, whatever his domestic failures, has presided over a successful foreign policy."

Imagine that!  The fools!

Cal Thomas, Town Hall:  "Forgive me if I don't join the State Department, American officials and world leaders in their euphoric Hallelujah Chorus celebrating the demise of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi.  Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has dropped an additional $11 million on Libya ($135 million since the uprising began), no doubt borrowed from the Chinese since we don't have that kind of money."

$11 MILLION DOLLARS!  God, who is this guy, Dr. Evil?  We don't have $11 million to remove Gaddafi?  You think maybe that might be because you guys wasted $2 trillion going after the wrong guy in Iraq?  Huh? What do you think?  I'm waiting...

Dennis Prager, Town Hall:  "Are Evangelicals or University Professors More Irrational?"

Which do you think, idiot?  Dennis continues:

"With regard to those evangelicals who believe that Earth is less than 10,000 years old and that there either were no dinosaurs or that they lived alongside human beings, my reaction has always been: So what? I believe that Earth is many millions of years old...and that dinosaurs preexisted man by millions of years.  But what real-life problem is caused by people who believe otherwise?"

What real-life problem?  How about eight years of a presidency that destroyed our economy and made us look like fools to the rest of the world?

So, here is the most disgusting right wing blog comment of the day- and don't think that is ever an easy accomplishment:

Astute Bloggers:  "Joe Biden has brain issues, including two brain surgeries for aneurysms in 1988. Just a few months ago, he welcomed Representative Gabrielle Giffords to the cracked head club upon to her return to Congress."

The cracked head club.  Why don't you assholes shoot a few more of our congressmen, so the cracked head club can get bigger?   Now for a little "oh no, it isn't racism:"

Nikki Jackson, Astute Bloggers:  "Herman Cain...Magic Negro? ...some Republicans have decided that they need a "magic negro" of their own. After all, what could counteract the uplifting post-racial appeal of the first half-black, half-American president so well as a presidential candidate who is an authentic American black man, with no unsettling questions about his birth, his Social Security number, his college records, his religion and even his name?"

Unsettling questions?  I think you meant unsettling lies, Nikki. You need a better editor.

Right, guys, it is led by Al Qaida and Iran.  Get back to me when you have some "proof" on that one.  We all need a good laugh now and then.

Astute Bloggers:  "OBAMA RE-ELECT STRATEGY EMERGES IN INDIANA: LIBERTARIAN PARTY CANDIDATES TO SIPHON OFF GOP VOTES...THE SPECIAL ELECTION IN NY26 SHOWED THE DEMS THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN WIN...With 91 percent of precincts reporting, Hochul held a commanding 48 percent to 42 percent lead over Corwin. Tea party candidate Jack Davis received 9 percent."

Yes, a Republican lost an election because a teabagger ran against him.  It's all Obama's fault.  As usual.

James Lewis, American Thinker:  "Captain America Abandons the Entire Middle East"

"Captain America" being Obama, of course, and "Abandons the Entire Middle East" because he was involved in removing three of their worst dictators.  Nothing a wingnut loves like a dictator.

Brad Hamilton, New York Post:  "Bullets are flying over Broadway -- and everywhere else in the city.  The number of people shot surged 154 percent two weeks ago -- to 56 from 22 over the same week last year -- and spiked 28 percent in the last month. The recent gunplay has now pushed the number of shooting victims this year slightly above last year’s tragic tally -- to 1,484 from 1,451 -- through Oct. 16.

Four high-ranking cops point the finger at Occupy Wall Street protesters..."

No comment needed on this idiotic  story, which is getting considerable coverage in wingnut world today.  "#Occupy Milwaukee protester may have voted illegally in Wisconsin"

A major corruption scandal here.  Yes, the crack investigators at have found one person who may have voted illegally in Wisconsin.  Maybe.  They weren't able to verify that he actually did vote illegally, but maybe he did.  Maybe.

PJ Tatler:  "Loser Democrat Sues Because He Lost...Make this man the poster child for everything that is wrong with the party of trial lawyers."

Remember Bush v. Gore, buddy?  No?  I didn't think so.  You guys don't remember much.  Except for things that didn't happen, like the Acorn Scandal, the massive Global Warming scientist conspiracy or Obama's Kenyan birth certificate.  Those things you never forget.

Bet You Never Heard This

From the Portland Maine Press Herald:

"PORTLAND — Portland police are looking for the person who threw a chemical bomb at the Occupy Maine encampment in Portland during the early morning hours on Sunday.

Sgt. Glen McGary said police responded around 4 a.m. Sunday to an explosion in Lincoln Park at Congress and Pearl streets"

I checked the first six pages of google hits for "Maine occupy wall street bomb," and there was not a single hit from a mainstream news outlet.  Apparently, right wing acts of terror against liberals are not worthy of being reported.  You know that if something like this happened as a teabag event, every national news outlet would be screaming about this for days, and there would be nothing else on Fox News and CNN.  Instead, when real people not paid for by the Koch brothers get attacked, it's just fine.

A Long Graph

I just couldn't resist posting this wonderful graph of the results of Herman Cain's 9-9-9 tax proposal.  It's a little small, so let me tell you that the first four columns are the bottom four quintiles of the American populace, while the column at the far left is the top .1%:

No comment needed.

Saturday, October 22, 2011

Here's a little tidbit from a post at American Thinker which amused me:
"Perhaps the most stunning element of the Revolutionary Communist Party's manifesto is the call for black Americans to unite into a separate, autonomous republic in the American South.  Wilson cited the Revolutionary Communist Party's constitution, which called upon African-Americans to forge an autonomous region comprising "the southern part of the former imperialist United States of America."  That decision would be made by a special vote in which only African-Americans would be eligible to participate.  Insane?  Yes."

Oh, totally insane.  After all, just imagine the absurdity of the thought that White Americans would ever call for the forging of  "an autonomous region comprising  the southern part of the  United States of America."  And imagine what an idiot you would have to be to imagine that such a thing would be decided by a vote in which only white Americans would be allowed to participate.  The whole thing is so stupid that no one could ever imagine patriotic white people doing that.  Thank heaven for the Republican party and its followers for being so alert to the sort of treasonous plot that could only come from the left.

My God, don't these people have a shred of self-awareness or concern about humiliating themselves in public?

What? Global Warming is Real? Who Knew?

I don't want to devote too much time to this, but for the record, a climate study funded by the Koch brothers made the huge mistake of hiring an honest climate sceptic (apparently, as hard as it is to believe, there was at least one) who discovered that it is all true!  Here is a chart comparing his results (referred to on the chart as "Berkeley") to several well-known climate studies that have been the subject of endless derision and accusations of fraud by climate deniers, and all of the other usual right wing fools:

Well, what do you know?  The scientists were telling the truth, and it was the people taking money from the oil companies that were lying.  Who could have ever predicted that?

I just know that, when I write my next Wingnut Wrapup I'm going to find all sorts of posts apologizing for having trusted a bunch of corporate shills.

Wingnut Wrapup

Well, I can't resist devoting a large part of today's garbage collection to the wingnuts' analysis of a left-wing movement that has, in one month, and without financial support from the Koch Brothers, spread to over a thousand cities around the world.  I want to start with a true milestone in wilful self-delusion:

Pajamas Media:  "Bizarre neo-swastika reminiscent of “The Great Dictator” used as power symbol by OWS leaders...El Marco, one of the best citizen photojournalists in the country, this morning published an outstanding photo-essay about the Occupy Denver protests over the weekend, and in it he makes this highly disturbing observation:  Note how when the “leaders” put the symbol on their sleeves (as in the first and third photos), it is rotated 45 degrees just like the Nazi swastika was...Don’t these people see an echo of the swastika in their new power symbol?"

Not too familiar with Twitter hash tags, huh, guys?  Or are you convinced at this point that the morons who read your blog will believe anything, no matter how stupid?  Based on past behavior, it's a good bet.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Busted. Emails Show Liberal Media & Far Left Cranks Conspired With #OWS Protesters to Craft Message"

Hey, the liberals "conspired" to craft their message!  The abomination!  Crafting messages is a job better left to Newt Gingrich, Frank Luntz and other great American heroes.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Predictable… Obama-Endorsed “Occupy Wall Street” Goons Deface 9-11 Memorial Statue in Zuccotti Park"

Well, not quite "defaced."  Someone tied an American flag around the statue's head.  I guess displaying the American flag constitutes defacing now.  Grasping at straws there, Jim, or what?

Town Hall:  "Great: Obama Moves to Exploit "Occupy" Movement's Fury "

Another evil act.  The Republican party, to cite a more noble example of politicians, would never attempt to curry favor with the Tea Partiers, or to use them for political advantage.

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Nazi Party Supports Occupy Wall Street...The Nazi Party of America has released a statement in support of Occupy Wall Street"

Well, as usual, not quite.  Actually, I couldn't find any mention of the "Nazi Party of America," nor, in over 40 years of following neo-Nazis have I ever heard of such a group.  Here's what the American Nazi Party had to say, however:

"THE NATIVES ARE GETTING RESTLESS, AND ZOG FEARS IT MIGHT HAVE A POPULAR UPRISING ON ITS HANDS - finally! After all - JUST WHO - are the WALL STREET BANKERS? The vast majority are JEWS - and the others are SPIRITUAL JEW materialists, who would sell their own mother's gold teeth for a PROFIT. And MORE and MORE people are AWARE of this truth, are not only NOT afraid to TALK ABOUT IT - they're shouting it on WALL STREET!  I urgently URGE all of you to TAKE PART and JOIN IN when these protests hit your neck of the woods. Produce some flyers EXPLAINING the "JEW BANKER" influence"

So actually, they weren't so much supporting the demonstrators, as trying to figure out a way to use the protests to push their usual anti-semitism.  But no right winger is going to pass up an opportunity to claim that liberals are the real Nazis.  Just to continue with what real would-be Nazis think of the protests, here is a statement from the National Socialist American Labor Party:

"The Marxist-Leftist demonstrations on Wall Street over the course of the last month have clearly shown the depths to which our Nation's economic, cultural, and societal standing has fallen...Marxist-Leftists are attempting to use the current economic collapse as a means and way to bring about their doctrine of Cultural and Economic Marxism and all its glory of multiculturalism. Under their utopianism, our civil society will be destroyed, race mixing will be mandatory, Christianity will be repressed and the free market based economic system that fuels our economic system and that is also a basis for a National Socialist economic system will be abolished in favor of a the Communist textbook redistribution of wealth."

Not such a vote of confidence after all, huh?  It's so much easier for right wingers to make their points when they studiously avoid the facts.

John Ransom, Town Hall:  "Occupy Wall Street is made up of a bunch of European-style nihilists in the purest sense. Their stock-in trade is alienation, Jared Lee Loughner-style."

I see. Jared Lee Loughner, a right wing lunatic  sovereign citizen who carried out a murderous attack against a liberal ccongresswoman, is the archetypical leftist.  That makes a lot of sense.

Walter Hudson, Pajamas Media:  "By definition, a government bailout is the seizure and redistribution of wealth to insulate bad actors from malinvestment. In that way, bailing out Wall Street is fundamentally no different than bailing out student loans (one of the Occupiers’ demands). One cannot be against the bailouts and for socialism, as they are one and the same."

Oh yeah?  I can understand how you are unable to see the difference between helping out poor people who are working hard to advance themselves, and thieving the nation's wealth to see to it that the rich who destroyed our economy don't have to pay a penny of the cost- that's just standard right wing thinking.  But don't try to tell us what we are allowed to believe.  Hopefully, we're past that stage now.

Enough.  Now, some miscellaneous trash:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:Flashback: Gaddafi Says Obama Is a Blessing to Muslim World… “He Is a Friend”   It wasan’t that long ago that Muammar Gaddafi heiled Obama as a Muslim and a friend.
Now he’s dead.

Not a mention of Obama's role in driving Gaddafi from power, or George W. Bush taking Gaddafi off of the terror list, and hailing him as a friend in the fight against terrorism.

I bet Gaddafi didn't see Obama as such a friend lately.  But Jim is so intent on smearing Obama that he simply ignores reality to make his sick accusations.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Hillary Clinton Arrives in Afghanistan to Push Peace With Taliban – After They Firebombed the US Embassy Just Last Month"

Yeah, why isn't she in Britain, negotiating peace with the English?  Oh wait, we already have peace with them.  That's right, now I remember- negotiating peace is something you do with your enemies.  Makes sense when you think about it.

Michael Ledeen, Pajamas Media:  "I'm Baffled. What's He Up To?  Every time I think I’ve got a grip on this administration, they do something I just can’t deconstruct. "

Like tell the truth about something.  I mean, how crazy is that?

Star Parker, Town Hall:  "Herman Cain: Rocket Fuel for America"

This kind of rocket fuel, I think:

Jonathan Spyer, Pajamas Media:  "Syria Proving the Hollowness of 'Arab Spring'"

Because removing three dictators means nothing, I tell you, if there is still one dictatorship left.  You see, right wingers are still entitled to spout their cant, even after it has nearly destroyed the country, and produced nothing but colossal foreign policy disasters.  But, liberals have to keep their mouths shut about what they believe until they have ushered in a golden age.

Susan Brown, Town Hall:  "The response to president Obama's October 14, 2011 announcement that U.S. military boots were on the ground in Africa to assist in another "overseas contingency" "non-war" operation in Africa is another example of the left's ever-evolving definition of war based upon which political party is in control."

Something which is very evil, I take it.  Like, if it would be wrong to overthrow, say, the government of Canada, it was wrong to shoot at the poor soldiers who were only trying to defend Hitler's right to rule the world.  Yes, I can certainly see how right wingers would think that.  Using the word "think" in a very loose way.

Dianne West, Town Hall:  "... if nationalized health care is a demonstrably Bolshevik program, "stimulus spending" is what you might call a genuine Bolshevik plot"

In fact everything to stop the economic collapse of the country is a Bolshevik plot, until everything has collapsed so much in value that the whole nation can be bought by the Koch brothers and a few of their friends.  Then, it will be a great idea to have a few trillion more in "bailouts" to corporations.

And finally, this analysis from our friends at News Cottage Two, who we can always count on to help us see where the Republican party is heading:

And here's the evidence:

“For many of us, social justice is where we find our Judaism,” said Regina Weiss, the communications director for the Progressive Jewish Alliance & Jewish Funds for Justice. “For many there is no more important way to stand up and express Judaism on the holiest night of the year [Yom Kippur] than to stand with people who are hurting and to stand up for greater equality in the country.”

What a bunch of evil, malignant bastards, huh?  Standing up for greater equality- the most contemptible Jewish plot of all.

No End to the Lying

So Obama is ending the colossal Republican military blunder in Iraq.  Here's George Romney's response to this:

"President Obama’s astonishing failure to secure an orderly transition in Iraq has unnecessarily put at risk the victories that were won through the blood and sacrifice of thousands of American men and women," Romney said in a statement. "The unavoidable question is whether this decision is the result of a naked political calculation or simply sheer ineptitude in negotiations with the Iraqi government."

What victories and how did Obama put them at risk?  This entire statement is a malignant smear.  That is all the Republicans have, but given the collaboration of the press, it's all they may need.

I Think I'll Just Bum You Out

with this headline from Daily Kos:

"Half of wage earners made less than $26,400 in 2010"

I don't think I need to say any more, really, although you are free to click the link and read the rest, if you aren't already depressed enough.

If it makes you feel any better, 81 people in the U.S. made more than 50 million.  For those who are still wondering who the Republicans' real constituency is, well there they are- all 81 of them.  The rest of us can just go to hell as far as they are concerned.

Self-Serving Stupidity

Courtesy of Mitt Romney, from the Republican Presidential "debate" the other day:

"The -- the idea that 49 states can tell Nevada, "We want to give you our nuclear waste," doesn't make a lot of sense. I think the people of Nevada ought to have the final say as to whether they want that...Let -- let the free market work. And on that basis, the places that are geologically safe, according to science, and where the people say the deal's a good one will decide where we put this stuff. That's the right course for America. (APPLAUSE)"

Oh yes, the American people, who can't even understand their own mortgages, and half of whom don't seem to understand that the earth is older than 6,000 years, are going to:

A) read the technical geological reports about the areas concerned, and

B) understand them, and finally

C) fight their way through the propaganda campaigns paid for by the nuclear industry,

to make a sensible decision about issues like this.  Definitely, a better approach to decision making than for the Federal government to hire experts in the issues involved to come up with a solution.  The people like Romney who propose such solutions are corrupt liars.  There is no question about that, and it's about time that the truth be stated bluntly.

P.S.  Much of this radioactive waste remains immensely toxic for tens of thousands of years.  Do we really want to let decisions about its fate to be decided by people who believe the earth is 6000 years old, and likely to come to an end in our lifetimes?

No Crime Too Low

From the BBC, another appalling story of the moral bankruptcy of the Catholic Church:

"Spanish society has been shaken by allegations of the theft and trafficking of thousands of babies by nuns, priests and doctors, which started under Franco and continued up to the 1990s.

The scale of the baby trafficking was unknown until this year, when two men - Antonio Barroso and Juan Luis Moreno, childhood friends from a seaside town near Barcelona - discovered that they had been bought from a nun. Their parents weren't their real parents, and their life had been built on a lie.

The pair went to the press and suddenly the story was everywhere. Mothers began to come forward across Spain with disturbingly similar stories."

Lawyers believe that up to 300,000 babies were taken.

The scandal is closely linked to the Catholic Church, which under Franco assumed a prominent role in Spain's social services including hospitals, schools and children's homes.

Nuns and priests compiled waiting lists of would-be adoptive parents, while doctors were said to have lied to mothers about the fate of their children.

A Spanish magazine published photographs of a dead baby kept in a freezer at the San Ramon clinic, supposedly to show mothers that their child had died."

There is, apparently, no depravity too despicable for it to become accepted practice in the Catholic Church.  And just like the revelations that the Church is effectively a machine for the manufacture of child sexual abusers, you can bet every penny you own that it will turn out that the hateful crime of stealing babies for profit was standard Church practice in many other places.

Anyone who, after all of this, grants the Catholic Church the right to speak with authority on moral matters is a fool, who is voluntarily making himself complicit to monstrous evil.

Press Set To Screw Democrats as Usual

Here is one of the most important stories about the coming election that you will ever read.  It relates a Pew study of press coverage of the various presidential candidates.

We have all heard, so many times, the Republican lies about the supposed liberal bias of the mainstream press.  Well, here is the truth:

As you can see from the above chart, Obama is given favorable coverage in only nine percent of mainstream press stories.  This compares to 31% favorable coverage of Palin and Bachmann, and 28% favorable for Herman Cain, all three of whom are ignorant pathological liars who would be disastrous as President of the United States, and who shouldn't be taken seriously by any sane person.

This is what every Democratic Presidential candidate for decades has had to bear, and it is coming again, from a corporate press which is determined to see a Republican back in the White House, despite the near fatal damage caused by the last one.  Add this to the billions in corporate money the Republicans have to spend this time around, and it will be a near miracle if American voters are not deluded into electing someone who will, almost assuredly, destroy the economic and social fabric of our country for decades to come.

And let us not forget that every single member of the mainstream press knows perfectly well that Barack Obama, however ineffectual he has proven to be, is an honest and well-meaning man who has dedicated his life to doing the best he can for the American people, while the Republican candidates are, without exception, corrupt, lying demagogues committed to nothing but thievery of our national wealth.

This is a bleak prospect, but it is reality, notwithstanding all of the Republican screaming about the "liberal" press.  We may be seeing the end of  our founding fathers' dream, destroyed by greed and hatred, and by the ultimate treason from the Republican party, which would rather see a few thousand people have billions than to see this country survive.

Just Kill Them

From the New York Times, this solution to immigration from current Republican front-runner Herman Cain:

"Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Saturday that part of his immigration policy would be to build an electrified fence on the country’s border with Mexico that could kill people trying to enter the country illegally.

The remarks, which came at two campaign rallies in Tennessee as part of a barnstorming bus tour across the state, drew loud cheers from crowds of several hundred people at each rally. At the second stop, in Harriman, Tenn., Mr. Cain added that he also would consider using military troops “with real guns and real bullets” on the border to stop illegal immigration."

Entering the United States illegally is a misdemeanor in most cases.  Here's a Republican leader openly advocating killing masses of people for committing a misdemeanor, to open cheers from his audience.

You would have to be an idiot not to understand where this sort of thing is taking our country.  We are no longer in a contest between two political parties to determine the direction of our nation.  The right is succeeding in bringing to life one of their fondest desires: a Manichean struggle between good and evil.  Of course, they turned out to be on the evil side, but they won't appreciate the irony in that.

The Dumbest Holiday in the History of the Earth

And yes, this is real, and not some sick creation by Green Eagle.  There is nothing so simple and innocent that "Christians" can't ruin it by trying to suck the energy out of it for their own selfish ends.

You Have NO Rights- I Am Not Kidding

Read on and weep.  I hope these excerpts from a recent legal decision involving a lawsuit against Monsanto will be readable- I had to go to some trouble to get them into this post.

Well, I bet you didn't know this:

If you didn't see it in the original, you wouldn't believe it.  You do not have the right to own a cow, or consume the food of your choice.  If this is true, I wonder what rights you do have?

Well, here's the capper:

"The Wisconsin judge who recently ruled that we have no right to own a cow or drink its milk resigned to join one of Monsanto’s law firms."

This nation now belongs to the corporations, and the simplest, most basic acts you may wish to perform are forbidden if they interfere with corporate profits.  And this is before we really feel the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision allowing corporations to openly buy candidates for national offices.  Pray that something like Occupy Wall Street works; otherwise we are doomed.

Wingnut Wrapup

Again!  Again I taunt you with the mighty reasoning of the right!  And here I go!

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "Earlier today, Katie posted a clip from last night's Freedom Watch, in which a retired US Army officer suggests the foiled Iranian-backed terrorist plot might be a manufactured crisis by the Obama administration.  The segment was brimming with conjecture and dark theorizing.  If true, the allegations raised would represent a stunning betrayal of a the public trust..."

Of course, it was just fine when Bush manufactured a phony crisis in Iraq, at a cost of two trillion dollars, and a result of nothing except big profits for Halliburton and Blackwater.   Mr. Benson reluctantly concedes that the right is going to be unable to convince very many people that this malignant fable is true, but he finishes by encouraging right wingers everywhere to keep looking for any other lie that they can pin on Obama.

Soren Dayton, Red State:  "Fraud in signature collection for Obama and Hillary in 2008"

The horror!  Yes, right wingers have apparently found one person who claims he didn't sign his name to a petition in Indiana to put Obama on the ballot!  How this compares to, say, the 50,000 black people who were systematically and illegally removed from the voter rolls in Florida in 2000 by George Bush's brother, Soren doesn't say.

Red State:  "UPDATE: The UAW’s Heavy-Handedness: Union Threatens Ford With Strike"

How DARE they threaten to STRIKE?  That is the act of THUGS that are trying to start a CLASS WAR; i.e. not just letting rich people have everything.  What has become of our American spirit?

Bob Owens, Confederate Yankee:  ""Revolution, man!"
"Yeah, like anarchy, man!"
"We're gonna take it back from the fat cats, man!"
"Power to the people!"

A bad LSB flashback to the 60s? Unfortunately, no."

No, Bob, it's a good flashback to the 60's, the last time a popular movement had any effect on our government.  Deal with it.

Selwyn Duke, Renew America:  "The black U.S. attorney has common cause with the black criminal"

Oh no, we're not racist.  YOU are racist for calling us that!  Because ALL black people are in league with criminals- everyone knows that.

World Net Daily:  "Would you vote for 'Joe the Plumber'?"

Oh, sure.  For what? Dickhead of the decade?

World Net Daily:  "Former 'SNL' actress Victoria Jackson grills protesters"

I thought cannibalism was illegal.

World Net Daily:  "House GOP approves new free-trade deals "

I guess they don't even bother to count Democrats' votes any more.

World Net Daily:  "SPECIAL OFFER-Want a diagnosis of America's true ailments?"

Sorry, you can't have a diagnosis.  America couldn't afford the insurance.

Thomas Lifson, American Thinker:  "Sadly, President Obama does not seem up to the task of coping with the subtlety and complexity of diplomacy in East Asia."

Unlike, say, President Bush, who knew how to deal with diplomatic subtlety and complexity:  Bomb the hell out of them.

Erika Johnson, Town Hall:  "Friday Fun: Wall Street Hippies"

Can anyone believe that these people are so pathetic, so out of any rational argument, that they have descended to calling their opponents "hippies?"  Man, that's really going to scare people.

Mona Charen, Town Hall:  "Obama's Weakness Invited Iran's Plot...The regime in Iran has been killing Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan for many years and has sworn countless times in the past 30 years to preside over the destruction of the United States. If it wasn't for a lucky break, Washington D.C., this autumn, would have been the scene of a massive explosion detonated at a high-end restaurant, with scores and perhaps hundreds killed and maimed."

A couple of things to note about this brilliant bit of conservative wisdom:  First of all, Obama apparently caused the Iranians to start planning the destruction of the United States when he was a 20 year old college student- quite an accomplishment in anti-Americanism.  Second, when American security agents stop a terrorist plot during a Republican administration, it's a masterstroke that thoroughly vindicates decades of Republican jingoism; when it happens during a Democratic administration, it's a lucky break.  Thanks for making that clear, Mona.

Floyd and Mary Beth Brown, Town Hall:  "Occupy Wall Street is a Menace, Prepare for Violence"

More insightful analysis from the Bonnie and Clyde of stupidity.  No direct evidence pointing to that violence, of course, just that some protesters fought with the police a long time ago, in a...well, you get it.  The answer:  people on the left should just shut up and go home.  The government does not exist for your benefit, and that thing about petitioning for redress of grievances?  Well, that's for the Koch Brothers.  "Petitioning" having been defined by Republican legal scholars as "Having enough money to pay Congressmen to get what you want."

Jeannieology, Renew America:  "Obama's bevy of Latina lovelies"

Yes indeed, Obama having chosen a couple of Hispanic women as advisors demonstrates some sort of deep sexual perversion.   Since, apparently, they could not possibly have anything real to contribute to our national discourse.

Michelle Malkin, Renew America:  "President Obama blames Republicans for the collapse of his latest government jobs bill. But in the end, he has only his tall tale-telling tongue to blame."

Because the defeat of the bill had absolutely nothing, NOTHING, I say, to do with the fact that every single Republican voted against it.  Now, if Obama had only added a few more tax cuts for the rich,  or a law preventing people from suing corporations, maybe things would have been different.  So see, it is his fault.

Chuck Baldwin:  "Feds: states have no rights"

Well then, maybe they should file papers to become corporations.  Then they'd be people and have all sorts of rights.

And finally, listen, I'm not even going to comment about this one, but if you care to, you can go to the a Pajamas Media web page and read all about the terrible threat to our nation posed by criminal vampires.  Yes, you read that right.  Man, these people's paranoia knows no bounds.  Of course, it's all the fault of liberal permissiveness.

Catch ya later.

No, it's not the mark of the beast, upside down, it's the latest Republican miracle to save the economy.

Finally one of the Republican candidates has come up with an economic plan.  That would be Herman Cain, with his 9-9-9 proposal.  That consists in setting the personal and corporate tax rate for everyone at 9%, and making up the difference with a 9% sales tax on everything you spend, including food.

Now, of course, it has already been demonstrated that, like everything the Republicans do to the economy, this ludicrous proposal would balloon the deficit without any benefit to the nation at all.  But even if it was revenue neutral, this idiotic plan would be nothing but a huge giveaway to the rich, like everything Republican.  Here's a quick little bit of arithmetic, based on the following table of current tax rates:  Note that this is based on income after deductions:

$0-$8,375                      10% of the amount over $0
 $8,376 -$34,000      $837.50 plus 15% of the amount over $8,375
 $34,001 -$82,400      $4,681.25 plus 25% of the amount over $34,000
 $82,401 -$171,850      $16,781.25 plus 28% of the amount over $82,400
 $171,851 - $373,650      $41,827.25 plus 33% of the amount over $171,850
$373,651 and up     $108,421.30 plus 35% of the amount over $373,650

So here we go.  Let's compare a person who makes $34,000.00 and a person who makes ten million dollars, after deductions:

Old Tax      9-9-9 Tax    Net Savings
$34,000 income                    $4681         $3060          $1621

Out of that $1621 savings, this person would have to pay a 9% sales tax on everything they purchase, which would absorb virtually all of their supposed tax benefits, leaving them with a net tax cut of a couple hundred dollars if they are lucky.  Now, the rich guy:

Old Tax         9-9-9 Tax   Net Savings
$10 million income            $3,742,873    $900,000    $2,842,873

Well, there you go.  The rich guy does pretty well out of Herman Cain's proposal, huh?  His taxes are cut by over 75%.  The ordinary guy?  Tough luck, buster.   Take your couple of hundred and go home. Bet you feel a whole lot better off now.

I have always been staggered at the notion that people would fall for the endless flat tax proposals that are a stock in trade of Republican economics.  How can it escape their attention that, if we all pay the same tax, the guys with the high tax rates are going to make out like bandits, and the rest of us are going to pick up the tab, one way or the other.  The dishonesty and indifference to the welfare of average Americans revealed in Cain's proposal is breathtaking, yet it has propelled him today to the number one spot in the Republican contest to see who gets to be the next person to lead the destruction of our economy.

I doubt that Cain will last that long with the Republican base- he is, after all a...well, you know.  But, of course, whichever corrupt tool they choose will be just as dedicated to absolving the rich of their responsibility to the country.  What a nation, huh?

Added:  It just occurred to me that the $2.8 million tax cut that the rich guy in the above example would get every year is more than the entire lifetime earnings of the other guy.  There's fairness for you.

Who Can Pass Up This Story?

As absolutely inevitable as things like this have become:

"In what is almost too predictable to be true, the lead sponsor of a Tennessee law allowing handgun permit holders to bring guns into bars “has been arrested on charges of drunken driving and possession of a gun while under the influence.” Pulled over in Nashville, Tennessee late yesterday, state Rep. Curry Todd (R) “failed a roadside sobriety test and refused to take a breathalyzer. A loaded Smith & Wesson 38 Special was found in a holster stuffed between the driver seat and the center console."

Actually, I was pretty much too lazy to post this, until I saw the guy's mugshot:

State Representative Curry Todd.  That would be (I  hardly need to say it) Republican State Representative Curry Todd.

You can't make things like this up.  Aren't we blessed that decisions about who can go around with a loaded gun are in the hands of guys like this?

A Miscellaneous Collection of Nonsense

I've gotten so bored with the usual right wing jackasses I cover in Wingnut Wrapup.  I thought I'd see how close to their mendacity and viciousness our more mainstream political figures are getting these days.  Here's a little collection I've seen recently.  It's a sad comment on our country that this sort of thing is considered an acceptable part of our discourse:

Republican representative Peter King, speaking about Occupy Wall Street:  "“We have to be careful not to allow this to get any legitimacy,” he said, adding “I’m taking this seriously in that I’m old enough to remember what happened in the 1960s when the left-wing took to the streets and somehow the media glorified them and it ended up shaping policy. We can’t allow that to happen.”

It ended up shaping policy by ending a vicious war of aggression in which we murdered over two million civilians, and also in driving a corrupt criminal out of the White House.  Oh yes, those were horrid times we'd never want to see ever again.

And here's a good use of our Republican legislators' time:

"The House Judiciary Committee passed a bill yesterday that would make it a federal crime for U.S. residents to discuss or plan activities on foreign soil that, if carried out in the U.S., would violate the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) -- even if the planned activities are legal in the countries where they're carried out."

Think about the doors that precedent will open for foreign countries:  "The Iranian Mullahs enacted a law yesterday that would make criticizing Islam a capital crime, even if it occurred in the United States."  Oh yes, I am sure that would be just fine with the idiot Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee.

Mitt Romney:  "As President, on Day One, I will focus on rebuilding America’s economy. I will reverse President Obama’s massive defense cuts. Time and again, we have seen that attempts to balance the budget by weakening our military only lead to a far higher price, not only in treasure, but in blood."

Of course, Obama has actually raised the defense budget.  But what's a little lie, when it gets to a greater truth:  one of them has no right to be in the White House.  And by the way, when has weakening our military ever "lead to a far higher price, not only in treasure, but in blood?"  The only times that occur to me are when the Republicans fought tooth and nail to prevent our preparation for World War II, and when Bush and Cheney wouldn't pay for body armor and protected vehicles for the troops.  No wonder Mitt didn't cite any examples.

Liz Trotta, Fox News:  " I advise anybody who has a sense of humor left about this to go to and what you will read is the ravings of what sounds like the Unabomber"

That's right- asking for basic fairness in this country makes you a terrorist.  On the other hand, attending a demonstration paid for by the Koch brothers to push their interests is very patriotic.  Liz continues with her incisive analysis:

"Now, what's interesting about this is that media seems, the liberal media is being accused of setting this up for Obama, so that he can use this as a, these people as a wedge against the Republicans in the election."

You see, Obama and the Democrats have no right to organize their natural constituency to support their re-election.  Unlike the Republicans, who could never be accused of anything but the most patriotic of motives in paying to create the dumb show that is the Tea Party.

Okay, okay, while we are on the subject of Occupy Wall Street, I can't resist at least one visit with one of our favorite right wing opinion makers:

Jim Hoft:  "Well, Duh!… Business Owners Complain Camp Poopstock Goons Want Everything For Free."

Camp Poopstock. A phrase that will live forever.   Man, that guy has a way with words. No wonder so many right wingers turn to him for political analysis.

And now, a classic example of right wing debating at its finest:

"Alan Grayson: Let me tell what they're talking about. They're complaining about the fact the Wall Street wrecked the economy three years ago and nobody's held responsible for that. Not a single person has been indicted or convicted for destroying twenty percent of our national net worth accumulated over two centuries. They're upset about the fact that wall street have iron control over economic policies of this country and that one party is a wholly owned subsidiary of wall street and the other party caters to them as well, that's the truth of the matter as you said before. And…

P. J. O'Rourke: Get the man a bongo drum...Get your shoes off, get a bongo drum, forget where to go to the bathroom and it's yours."

"Get that man a bongo drum."  That's Nobel Economics Prize analysis there, P. J.  Keep up the hard work of dealing with the causes of our economic troubles; you are being so helpful.  Why, until now, I never realized how destructive bongos really are.  Those beatniks have a lot to answer for.

Paul Ryan:   "I think he’s preying on the emotions of fear, envy and anger,” the Wisconsin Republican said today on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “And that is not constructive to unifying America. I think he’s broken his promise as a uniter, and now he’s dividing people. And to me, that’s very unproductive. That’s not who we are in America."

"I think this divisive rhetoric is fairly — is divisive,” he said. “I think it’s troubling. Sowing class envy and social unrest is not what we do in America."

No, what we do in America, if by "we" you mean "Republicans," is steal everything that's not tied down, and then blame the victims for not having anything left.

“That’s the danger with something like this — that you go from peaceful protests to throwing trash cans,” said a senior House Democratic official, who spoke on condition of anonymity..."

Of course, this "senior House Democratic official" doesn't quite have a name (as is usual in right wing accounts of what Democrats really believe,) but let's ignore that, and concentrate on the very real danger that people who have had their lives destroyed by a pack of rich sociopaths might go from talking, all the way to throwing trash cans!  Now, that is criminal behavior that cannot be tolerated, and which totally discredits anything they have to say, so they might as well all go home, because no one is listening.  At least not anyone with both the power and the will to fix the problems in our country.  People with that combination all died out around 1964.

And now, how about a couple of magnificent examples of the sort of governing that we have come to expect from Republicans:

"Officials in southeast Georgia are considering a money-saving program that would put inmates in fire stations...Officials say the inmates would respond to all emergencies - including residential fires - alongside traditional firefighters."

Well, that's nice.  I'm sure the inmates will appreciate the opportunity to "protect" whatever doesn't get burned up in the fires.  What could possibly go wrong with this scheme?  I mean, honesty and experience- what good are they for fighting fires?

"Via Think Progress, the news that the Topeka, Kansas city council is thinking of repealing their domestic violence misdemeanor laws in order to save money prosecuting them."

Of course, don't even think that they might take the same approach toward, say, marijuana possession.
But, if you should happen to feel like beating up your wife, well, go right ahead.  The family values party is right behind you.

And a word of warning to you women out there:  If your husband suddenly comes up with the brilliant idea of taking your family vacation this year in Topeka, I'd consider going to Rapid City or Sioux Falls or something instead.

People Who Don't Get History

Today's nominee, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, for this brilliant remark about the Wall Street Protesters:

“Civil disobedience doesn’t work for Boston...”

Really, Tommy boy?

Man, there are some people who don't care what fools they make of themselves.

34 Days

Just sayin'

Don't Worry, Bryan

Religious Hatemonger Bryan Fischer, at the ludicruously-named "Values Voters' Summit:"

“not a single one of our unalienable rights will be safe in the hands of a president who believes that we evolved from slime and that we are the descendents of apes and baboons.”

Don't worry, Bryan.  We don't believe that you evolved from slime.  In your case, you are still slime.

A Simple Solution

I want to make a more serious comment about the proliferation of marijuana dispensaries.  I live (normally) in Los Angeles, and it stuns me to drive around and see a place openly selling marijuana every six blocks or so.  Who ever thought we would live to see such a thing?

This situation is clearly unsustainable, but I believe there is a simple solution: free enterprise.  Yes, for once I am going to advocate the good old Republican answer to everything (not that they really believe what they are saying when it hurts them personally, but that is another conversation.)

Let these stores battle it out for supremacy, and see which ones survive.  Not only will the number of outlets inevitably decrease, but let's face it- the retail price of marijuana is wildly out of line with its production cost, and the competition could only benefit the consumer.  This may be a rare example, but it may also be one where right wing cant could actually work.

The Stupidity...

One more piece of news documenting the insane stupidity of the Obama administration:

"Feds cracking down on California medical marijuana dispensaries...Federal prosecutors in California are threatening to shut down medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state, sending letters to warn landlords to stop sales of the drug within 45 days or face the possibility that their property will be seized and they will be sent to prison."

If this idiot spends one cent on marijuana, it is further proof that he doesn't have a clue about what his job is supposed to be.  And I don't care how you feel about marijuana- this is a colossal waste of money, a capitulation to the meaningless cant of the right, and one more abandonment of his campaign promises:

"As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama said the federal government should not raid medical marijuana users and caregivers...

The latest letters have baffled the state’s medical marijuana activists, who believe the president has broken his word. “Obama says, ‘Yes.’ The conservatives  say, ‘No.’ So they get together and huddle and they settle on no,” said William G. Panzer, an Oakland lawyer who helped draft the state’s medical marijuana initiative. “The Obama administration has been incredibly disappointing on this issue.”

Once again, this inscrutably irrational man has demonstrated his belief that the right deserves whatever it wants, while Democratic voters should be happy with nothing but empty promises and clever speeches.  I cannot even begin to describe the pain I feel when I think of what he has done with the mandate he was given.  And I know I don't have to describe it- you all feel it too.

What a Day

Two jobs in the news today-  Steve Jobs and American jobs.  Both seem to be in about the same condition.

Not a Very Fast Thinker

Nicole Wallace, former Bush press secretary, about the premise of her new novel:

"What if somebody who was ill-equipped for the office were to ascend to the presidency or vice presidency? What would they do? How long would it take for people to figure it out? I became consumed by this question."

Nicole, you had eight years to figure that out, and a front row seat to observe it, you stupid slug. If you don't get it by now, just forget the whole thing and go home.

A Good Reason American Banks Can't Function

In this chart, stolen from our good friend Ryan Trask:

And in fact, a good demonstration of why, every time you turn around, fewer and fewer people have everything in this country.

Just keep this up, America.  Soon, our society will be back to the kind of government they had in about the tenth century B.C.  Won't that be fun.

Wingnut Wrapup

This news just in, from Think Progress:

"The Los Angeles Times reports that presidential contender Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) recently thanked a caller on a radio show who said he’d rather vote for infamous serial killer Charles Manson over President Obama. “Hey, thank you for saying that,” she replied."

Maybe it wasn't a mistake when she "accidentally"  praised John Wayne Gacy.

Elisabeth Meineke, Town Hall:  "How Multiculturalism Failed Europe"

Yes indeed, we all understand that the current collapse of European banks is solely attributable to treating brown people just like white people.  Because, of course, what is multiculturalism anyway?  Elizabeth clarifies this vital issue:

"Multiculturalism--sometime called cultural Marxism--is credited with creating tragedy on both sides."

Credited by whom?  These guys?

And while we're on the subject:

Star Parker, Town Hall:  "Sadly, more of the same from the Black Caucus"

Damn them!  They still want to be treated like white people!  Don't they know that this sort of thinking is what is driving the stock market down?  Can't they think of someone else for a change?  Like some investment bankers or guys on the board of Halliburton?

And while we're on the subject:

Roger Simon, Pajamas Media:  "Disband the Congressional Black Caucus"

Right!  Since when do the lesser races have a right to congregate in public!  Caucuses are for white people- it's in the Constitution.  At least it will be when we elect our next Republican government.

Kathy Kiefer, Town Hall:  "Bringing Selfish Back"

And  I never noticed that it ever left.  Silly Me.

Now, on to the bogus Obama scandal of the day (there is one every day, isn't there?)

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Dick Cheney: Obama Should Apologize For Criticizing Bush Era Terror Policies"

As far as I'm concerned, Obama should apologize for not throwing Dick Cheney in prison the day after he took office.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "How Leftists End an Argument… They Chase You and Cuss"

How rightists end an argument:

Much more effective, really.  You have to admit that.

Renew America:  "Mexico: Court upholds provision saying life begins at conception"

Funny how it's an abomination to pay attention to legal decisions in any other country, until one of them upholds an anti-abortion law.  Then, the wonderful legal system of Mexico provides us with a perfect model.

Bryan Preston, Pajamas Media:  "Shocking Photos: Barack Obama Appeared and Marched with New Black Panthers in 2007"

Well, if by "appeared and marched with," Bryan means that a couple of the eight members of the New Black Panther Party showed up at a commemoration of the Civil Rights struggle, along with about ten thousand other people, including then Senator Barack Obama, then I guess he's right.  This has become quite a popular issue on the right the last couple of days.  Bush kissing the Saudi princes who financed 9-11, on the other hand, is just good, clean fun.

Ryan Mauro, Pajamas Media:  "Gingrich Offers New ‘Contract with America’  His debate performances and new plan are making him seem viable."

Viable?  To what brain-dead idiot?  Man, you people are desperate.  What's next, bringing Fred Thompson back?

Town Hall:  "Perjury Charges Coming for Eric Holder? "

No, not really.  Not on this planet.

Kyle Olson, Town Hall:  "NEA Launches Self-Serving Ad Campaign for Obama Jobs Bill"

Because only rich people have a right to pay for ad campaigns.  Or to think about their own welfare.  The rest of us are just here to suffer and die so the Koch Brothers can have more than their current net worth of $50 billion.

Erick Erickson, Town Hall:  "George Stephanoupolos asked Barack Obama about banks and their new fees. Of course, Obama could not accept any responsibility for that at all. And along the way he said something pretty damn amazing.  This:  “You don’t have some inherent right just to– you know, get a certain amount of profit.

Actually, in the free market, on the supply and demand curve, you do have an inherent right to get a certain amount of profit "

Really? Who Knew?  Who knew that business owners have a right to be provided with "a certain amount of profit," no matter how poorly they run their businesses?  Now, that is a new concept of the "free enterprise system."  Of course, that's the way it seems to work with banks and Wall Street these days,  but I don't see that as a right so much as extortion.

World Net Daily:  "Find out what makes 'pro-choicers' do U-turn in seconds"

Oh I don't know, maybe a big sinkhole in the road in front of them because Republicans voted down appropriations to fix our infrastructure?

Anyway, let's finish off today's load of junk with by really sinking into the gutter for our last couple of items:

Whitewraith:  "JFK, Jr.’s Assassins Identified in official report sealed until names Clintons, Bush 41, 43 in JFK Jr. assassination"

I guess they didn't seal their report that well, huh?

Well there you go.  I bet you are really glad I brought this outstanding sample of investigative journalism into your lives.  Time for me to go before you recover and punch me in the face.

Dick Tells the Truth

Hard to believe, but true:
"Cheney: Obama Should Apologize For Badmouthing War On Terror Tactics...Referring to a speech in which Obama accused the Bush administration of  “overreacting to the events of 9/11” and engaging in torture, Cheney made his displeasure clear... Cheney said. “He said that we walked away from our basic fundamental ideals. That simply wasn’t the case.”

And for once, Cheney is telling it like it is.  If you think a little torture is contrary to Dick Cheney's fundamental ideals, well, you don't know Dick.

A Truly Mammoth Story

That will undoubtedly get far less attention from the mainstream press than, say, Michelle Obama's shopping trip to Target.  From Bloomberg:

"A Bloomberg Markets investigation has found that Koch Industries -- in addition to being involved in improper payments to win business in Africa, India and the Middle East -- has sold millions of dollars of petrochemical equipment to Iran, a country the U.S. identifies as a sponsor of global terrorism.

Internal company documents show that the company made those sales through foreign subsidiaries, thwarting a U.S. trade ban."

From the number one source of financing for the Teabaggers, a true taste of what patriotism means when it stands in the way of profits.  Because the Koch Brothers' $50 billion net worth is just not enough- they have to give aid to our enemies to make even more.  But like I said, Michelle's shopping habits or Barack's preacher are far more important than this act of open treason.  To Republicans, government exists to benefit the rich, so by definition, whatever rich people want cannot be treason.

Premature Abandonment

Here is a great quote from a speech by Adam Posen.  It is in an opinion piece by Paul Krugman, which is definitely worth a read:

"Both the UK and the global economy are facing a familiar foe at present: policy defeatism. Throughout modern economic history, whether in Western Europe in the 1920s, in the US and elsewhere in the 1930s, or in Japan in the 1990s, every major financial crisis-driven downturn has been followed by premature abandonment—if not reversal—of the macroeconomic stimulus policies that are necessary to sustained recovery. Every time, this was due to unduly influential voices claiming some combination of the destructiveness of further policy stimulus, the ineffectiveness of further policy stimulus, or the political corruption from further policy stimulus. Every time those voices were wrong on each and every count. Those voices are being heard again today, much too loudly."

Let me once again state the obvious- a point that Krugman makes over and over again.  There is absolutely no question what we (i.e. governments) need to do to ease the current economic crisis.  Unfortunately, those actions do not suit the interests of the hyper-rich, who believe they can make so much money in the short term that a severe collapse of the economy won't hurt them personally, and who are sociopathically indifferent to the fate of the rest of us.  These people have the resources to hire Very Serious People to to spout their cant, and to marginalize anyone who won't play along with them; the result being that they get their way, and the non-rich are forced to pay the price.
