The Constitution and the Crime of Treason

Thanks to Donald Trump, our national pot seems to be on the verge of boiling over, but before it does, there are a number of issues that we must get straight.  One essential concern is what, exactly, constitutes treason.  This is because it is vital that Donald Trump be removed from the Presidency on this ground.  Yes, there are a hundred other reasons that he has no right to be our President, but it is his treasonous conspiracy with a hostile foreign power which acted to put him in office, which forms the basis for a declaration of the illegitimacy of his entire Presidency, and the voiding of everything he has done while President, including all executive orders and mutilations of government departments, and the removal of all persons he placed on the Federal courts.  Removing him on this basis would also mean removing his vice President, who is equally illegitimate.

In anticipation of this possibility, the Republicans have begun a campaign to convince the American public that the crime of treason can only be charged when the United States is in a declared state of war with another country, something that has not happened since World War II.  This assertion is supported by the claim that court cases over our history have declared this to be true.  I spent a little time online looking at treason trials conducted by the United States.  They are actually few and far between, and mainly occurred early in our history as a result of the Whiskey rebellion, or as a result of World War II.  (In a gross miscarriage of justice, almost nobody was prosecuted for participating in the Confederate aggression during the civil war.)  Anyway, I am not an attorney, and I can't say I spent hours searching, but I was not able to find any record of a case that ruled this way.  And even if there were such cases, that would not necessarily be dispositive, as the courts have clearly been wrong before; no one would argue that the decision in the Dred Scott case should be a precedent today, and the corrupt decisions in Bush v. Gore or Citizens United clearly cannot be allowed to govern our country in the future.

I want to now present two arguments against this notion, one Constitutional and one a reductio ad absurdem argument.

It always amazes me when right wingers dig up the most obscure so-called precedents to justify their positions, while ignoring the actual words of the Constitution, or the primary reference regarding their meaning, the Federalist Papers, written by the authors of the Constitution to explain their reasoning.

Well, first of all, here is what the Constitution actually says about treason:

Article III, section 3"1: Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court."

Notice that there is nothing that restricts charges of treason to times of declared war.  Now let me go on to the passage in Federalist Paper #43, written by James Madison on behalf of himself and his fellow writers of the Constitution:

Federalist Paper no. 43:"To declare the punishment of treason, but no attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood, or forfeiture, except during the life of the person attained. ''As treason may be committed against the United States, the authority of the United States ought to be enabled to punish it. But as new-fangled and artificial treasons have been the great engines by which violent factions, the natural offspring of free government, have usually wreaked their alternate malignity on each other, the convention have, with great judgment, opposed a barrier to this peculiar danger, by inserting a constitutional definition of the crime, fixing the proof necessary for conviction of it, and restraining the Congress, even in punishing it, from extending the consequences of guilt beyond the person of its author."

This is the entire explanation offered of the meaning of the treason section of the Constitution.  Notice that, though the reasoning for various provisions in the Constitution is dealt with here, once again, there is no mention of any kind of a restriction of the provisions of this law to times of declared war.

As far as I am concerned, this section is completely dispositive.  The writers of the Constitution went to great lengths in the Federalist Papers to explain exactly what they had in mind; they were perfectly capable of saying what they meant, and we are capable of reading it.

Now to my other argument, the reductio one.  Imagine, if you will, that it was discovered that an American had aided the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  Could anyone seriously assert that this person would not be guilty of treason, solely because his behavior took place on the day before war was declared?  Treason is among the worst crimes we know of; can any honest person suggest that a traitor could be absolved of his guilt by a meaningless technicality such as this?

As I stated above, we are already seeing Conservative "legal scholars" trying to work the refs by insisting that Donald Trump can not be charged with treason as a result of his betrayal of the country to the Russians; it is up to the rest of us to have none of this specious argument.  This is the ultimate specimen of Trump's crimes; if he is held responsible for anything, this must be at the head of the list.

He Can't Tell the Truth about Anything

This tweet from Trump yesterday:

"I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security"

And, of course, the actual truth:

"Donald Trump and Melania Won't Spend Christmas at Mar-a-Lago for the First Time in Years"

And here's a picture of Trump and Melania allegedly making Christmas calls to children last night (I'm sure to the Koch Brothers' grandchildren, or some of the Waltons- he's not going to waste time on anyone without money.)

There is absolutely nothing that the guy will not lie about.  And let's be clear; this is not about pathological lying, it is about bullying everyone around him into accepting what he says as the truth, no matter how much they know it is false.

Well, at least it looks like the chickens may be coming home to roost for him.  Keep your fingers crossed for 2019.

A Little Information About the Great Crash of 1929-Redux

As I write, the Dow has lost just over 5,000 points from its high on October 3rd of this year, about 2 1/2 months; or one sixth of its value.  I thought that this was a good opportunity to repost something I wrote earlier this year, about the 1929 collapse, which I think gives some perspective on what is happening now.  I want to reiterate something that I said at the end of this post, that being the recommendation to read  "The Great Crash  1929," by John Kenneth Galbraith.  This account of the Wall Street collapse is so relevant to today's events that I think everyone should take the time to read this short book.

I'll tell you something that I always believed until I started reading about the 1920's and 1930's, and it has to do with "Black Tuesday."  That was October 29, 1929, the day we were taught that the stock market crashed, precipitating the Great Depression, the greatest economic collapse in human history and a direct cause of World War II.  Isn't that what you, like me, were taught in school (if the subject was even mentioned?)  Even at the time, this account loomed large:
This is a subject which it might be profitable to examine, given that the Dow Jones average, which closed at 26,616 just a week ago, closed yesterday at 23,860, a loss of just over 10% in a week.  Yes, it was up a little today, but is that reason for comfort, or on the other hand, was the recent decline a reason for great concern?

I think it will be useful to examine exactly what did happen in 1929 and subsequent years.  Here is a chart of the Dow Jones average from that period, showing inflation adjusted numbers.  The data are by month, and I have added numerical information for some key months:

Here is what I want to point out:  The Stock Market Crash of 1929 did not happen in a single day; it was a phenomenon spread out over a long period of time.  In fact, as you might be able to see from the chart, there was another minor collapse before the big one, hitting a low point of 4312, in May of 1929.  The real crash began in August, hitting a temporary low point in November of 1929, at which point the Dow had lost over a third of its value.  Even after Black Tuesday, there was tremendous pressure from the bankers and other "authorities" to deny what was happening, as you can see from the front page of the New York Times of October 30, 1929:

After this, as you can see, the market rallied, if you can call it that, hitting a temporary number of 4173 in March of 1930, before beginning its truly catastrophic collapse, bottoming out in May of 1939, at a value of only 38.2% of its 1929 high point.  The crash, in other words, was not a product of a single disastrous day, but under Republican economic stewardship continued for two years.

I think it is fair to say that everyone in 1929 should have seen the May decrease in values as a sign of serious economic instability, but instead, they just ignored it and got back on the party train.  What we have seen in the last week is certainly comparable in extent to the May, 1929 collapse, and was certainly, given its short duration, worse than what happened in the first month of the real 1929 crash.  I am not an economist, and so I am not making any predictions here, but I do believe that, if you are going to look to the past for knowledge, it is best to have that knowledge straight.

Now, there is one more thing that I have to deal with in connection with the 1929 crash; and it is the myth so vehemently forced on the country afterwards, that nobody knew that the crash was going to happen.  In fact, many economic experts predicted, for several years before the crash, that it was inevitable, but nobody in government or the financial world was willing to take the blame for pulling the plug on the gigantic 1920's party, in which everyone thought they could get rich without risk.  Of course, the naysayers are being ignored today, by a government and a financial industry that will interpret the worst fiscal fever as a wonderful specimen of endless growth.  Will it all end the same way as it did in the 1920's?  This is a prediction I will make: if "irrational exuberance," i.e. unrestrained greed, continues to be the governing principal of the day, it certainly will be.

In closing, I want to recommend a short book, which is the only economics book I have ever read that can be described as a "page turner."  It is "The Great Crash  1929," by John Kenneth Galbraith.  A great read, and you will really feel like you have learned something when you are done.  If you want more, I suggest "The Crisis of the Old Order: 1919-1933," which is the first volume of Arthur Schlesinger's "The Age of Roosevelt."  These are both available on Kindle, the second one for free, believe it or not.  The two works will serve to utterly devastate much of the fiction about the crash which those who stand to benefit from the behavior that caused the first one, have spent endless effort spreading in the last ninety years.

Treason Part About 5,000

So Donald Trump is planning to remove all US troops from Syria.

Who does that hurt?  The United States, the countries that surround Syria in the Middle East, European countries who have had to bear the majority of the cost of displaced Syrians, and just about everyone who wants to see a more peaceful world.

Who does it help?  Well, leaving aside ISIS, it helps one person:  Vladimir Putin.

This is only the latest of a long series of actions by Trump which have benefited the Russians while materially harming this country and all of our traditional allies: His persistent efforts to eliminate economic sanctions on Russia, his removing limits on Russian nuclear weapon emplacements, his ignoring of Russia's aggression toward its neighbors, his altering the Republican platform to weaken the party's stance against Russia, his fawning, humiliating behavior toward Putin himself, his deliberately alienating China, Russia's main competitor for influence in Asia, his attempts to weaken our commitment to NATO, and on and on.  The whole of these policies could have very well been a wish list straight from Putin.

Well, even the lamebrained mainstream press seems to have now awakened to the overwhelming evidence that the Russians materially aided Trump's campaign for the Presidency, and that without their help, he would in all likelihood have lost.  But the other side of this deal- the constant action by Trump to promote the interests of the Russians and diminish our country's own authority on the world stage, is still being ignored.

The man is a traitor.  And not in some minor way, or through an extreme interpretation of the law.  He is adhering to our enemy, giving them aid and comfort.  He is likely the biggest traitor in the history of our country, worse even than Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee, who had at least not been entrusted by the people with preserving the security of the entire United States, before systematically and repeatedly selling us out to a foreign dictator.

The worst of this is that Trump's treason has been obvious since the day he took office, and that only now is it becoming even marginally acceptable to state anything approaching the truth.  As soon as they can get away with it, the mainstream press will turn its back on this colossal crime, and there is a good chance that the Republican destruction of our country will continue.

Note: at least some people are beginning to respect the truth.  From Kerry Eleveld, the lead story at Daily Kos at the moment:

"Facing wave of probes, Trump administration abruptly adopts pro-Kremlin policies on Syria, sanctions"

The article reveals that Trump is simultaneously moving to abandon US sanctions on Oleg Derapaska, a Russian oligarch with close ties to Putin, and a figure in several of Robert Mueller's investigations.

Wall of Coal

In a an effort to help make the Trump administration a success, Green Eagle wishes to make the following proposal.

Why can't we build the wall out of coal?  This will allow Trump to keep his promise, and at the same time he will keep another promise by giving years of work to coal miners, digging up enough coal for a two thousand mile long, thirty foot high wall of coal.  This is an eminently practical suggestion, as shown in the following photo from 1907:
Trump only needs to tell his base that this picture shows a part of the wall that is already built, and he is almost guaranteed reelection in 2020, even if he is in prison.

The only slight flaw I can foresee is the remote possibility that some Mexican vandal might light the wall on fire; however the pollution caused by a two thousand mile long coal fire will drive liberal environmentalists so crazy that it will be just as much fun for wingnuts as if the wall were still there.  A win-win for everybody!  And believe me, as long as the wall is still burning, nobody is going to try to cross it.

The Deep State and Satan

As I have mentioned, much of the true primal malignance of the right wing has migrated to videos.   I suspect that this is because the self-selected group that adheres to right wing beliefs is largely so uneducated that they cannot read and comprehend the written word, beyond the most elementary sentences.  Another reason for this phenomenon is something that liberals usually fail to understand.  When liberals read political articles, the point is to learn something, or at least be exposed to a different viewpoint.  Conservatives live on their emotions, and they follow politics to stoke their rage and greed.  Videos are obviously more effective than written words at this, so right wingers are in the process of transferring their information gathering to non-literate sources.

There is a problem in this for someone like me, who tries to follow the maunderings of the wingnuts:  it is really hard to expect sane people to watch this stuff for more than a couple of minutes.  Still, because the epicenter of right wing delusion has moved to You Tube and related sources of videos, I have been making an effort to watch as many of them as I can, and occasionally bring one to you.

What follows is a video "explaining" how the deep state (which we all know doesn't exist) is actually nothing but a manifestation of the will of Satan (who doesn't exist either, as we know.)  Yes, it is not enough to portray the right's enemies as merely evil in a secular way; they have to be literally the servants of Satan himself.

I want to make it clear that this delusion is a product of the willing marriage of Conservative politics with Evangelical Christianity, which is the source of this Satanic obsession.  If you wonder why so many rational people today are abandoning Christianity, here is a perfect example.

A Remarkable Prediction

President Lyndon Baines Johnson, in November, 1967, making one of the most prescient statements I have ever heard:

 I believe the time has come …to enlist the computer and the satellite, as well as television and radio… in the cause of education…

Think of the lives that this would change: the student in a small college could tap the resources of a great university…the country doctor [could get] help from a distant laboratory or a teaching hospital…in a partnership to share knowledge and to thus enrich all mankind...Eventually, I think this electronic knowledge bank could be as valuable as the Federal Reserve Bank.

And such a system could involve other nations, too--it could involve them in a partnership to share knowledge and to thus enrich all mankind.

A wild and visionary idea? Not at all. Yesterday's strangest dreams are today's headlines and change is getting swifter every moment.

I have already asked my advisers to begin to explore the possibility of a network for knowledge--and then to draw up a suggested blueprint for it.”

I can't resist.  Donald Trump this morning:

"Democrats can’t find a Smocking Gun tying the Trump campaign to Russia after James Comey’s testimony. No Smocking Gun...No Collusion.” @FoxNews  That’s because there was NO COLLUSION. So now the Dems go to a simple private transaction, wrongly call it a campaign contribution,..."

Everyone else commenting about this treats it as a joke, but not me.  The so-called President of the United States can't even spell the word "smoking."  And it's not a typo, because he spelled it wrong twice.

Our leader, the most powerful man in the world, is essentially illiterate.  He doesn't refuse to read briefings and memos, as has been reported; he can't read them.  His mind functions on the level of a six year old, both intellectually and emotionally.  And that is just fine with Republicans, as long as they can manipulate him into doing what their rich backers want.

Well, that's where we are as a country today.

Insanity On The March

Some of you may be aware that, in the QAnon world, December 5th was to be one of the greatest days in the history of civilization.  For that day, referred to in Q's posts as D5, was to be the day that Mueller was going to be revealed to be working closely with Trump to indict Hillary, Obama, etc, and tens of thousands of Democrats and other opponents of Trump were to be arrested, finally making America great again. 

Well, as far as can be told, that did not happen.

Let me digress for a second here.  Did you ever pay any attention to doomsday cults that predict that the world will end on a certain date, and when that doesn't happen, the next day they come up with ludicrous explanations for why they were wrong, and move right on to the next end of the world?  Well, QAnon and the whole Trump base are really not that different from doomsday cults, which are similarly run by and for a few cynical leaders milking their deluded followers for profit.  So why would we expect anything different from them?

What follows is an explanation of why all the predictions were wrong.  It is made up of ludicrous numerology, reference to an almost unknown chess game, a grotesque conspiracy theory about the death of George H. W. Bush, preposterous leaps of faith and an almost endless stream of similar nonsense.  Naturally it is a video, because the sort of people that fall for this garbage have apparently (like Trump himself) virtually lost the ability to read.  I have been watching many of these videos, but this one is fairly short, and I think it is worth a look because it shows the true derangement that is necessary to retain a belief in Trump at this point.

If this is not paranoid schizophrenia, it is a pretty damn good imitation of it.  But at this point, you virtually have to be mentally ill (or very, very rich) to still believe that Donald Trump is acting in your interest.  The only real question about things like this is how long they can go on before collapsing of their own weight of absurdity.  You'd think that that would have happened already, but it hasn't so I am not sure how long the damage will continue, and where it will lead.  Wherever that is, it isn't anywhere good, I assure you.

25th Amendment Remedy

I am posting this short video here, for those who might not have seen it.  It shows Donald Trump at what was supposed to be a photo opportunity with the President of Argentina, the host country of the recent G20 summit:

Trump appears to have lost consciousness of what was going on, and wandered away in a daze.

Sort of humorous, but this leads me to a suggestion, or a fear, about how the entire Trump disaster is going to end. 

First, let me make it clear that although there are literally hundreds of perfectly valid reasons to remove Trump from office, from his endless acts of corruption to his virtually daily obstruction of justice, to his ignoring or frustrating the laws he is sworn to uphold, but there is one justification for impeachment that must stand above all others, and that is his traitotous collusion with a foreign dictator to rig the Presidential election in his favor.  This is because it is only removal on those grounds that can justify a claim that every action he took as President was illegitimate.

Instead, this is what I think may very well be the outcome of this monstrous situation:  Trump will be "determined" to be sinking into dementia like his father, and the 25th amendment will be used to remove him.  In this scenario, his leaving the White House will be presented to the American people and to history as a monumental tragedy, and all of the endless crimes he committed will be swept under the rug, with no recourse for the American people and no opportunity (as at least happened with Nixon) for the truth to emerge.  And all the damage he did will continue, after he returns to spend his declining years at Mar-a-Lago. 

You need only see the hagiography surrounding the recently deceased George H. W. Bush, who was in reality a very mediocre President, to realize that the so-called tragedy that will befall Trump will be used by Republicans to shout down anyone who dares to speak of the reality of his disastrous time in office.  And so, the Republican party will survive the horror that it foisted on the country, and we will move on, until the next bought and paid for Republican criminal is manipulated into the White House.

Wingnut Wrapup

A disastrous week so far for our traitor in chief.  Let's look in on how the wingnuts are trying to lie all of this away.

Let's just start out with this headline from the Washington Post:

"Trump renews attacks on Mueller, asks whether probe will ‘just go on forever’

It will if you keep committing crimes forever, bucko.

And the typo of the month, from the Wall Street Journal:

“Vladimir Putin is president of Russia. An editing mistake erroneously identified him as Vladimir Trump in an earlier version of this article.”

At this point, it might have been more accurate to say that Putin is the President of the United States.

Now, back to our usual programming:

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "Analysis: What Does Cohen's New Guilty Plea Mean? We Have No Idea."

No idea at all.  I mean, it's just a mystery...Maybe he is part of Trump's treason, maybe he was just joking.  I mean, either one could be true, right?

"Let me just add that if there is any evidence that Trump would issue a pardon in order to protect himself or his family, that would constitute a gross abuse of power."

"The president told the New York Post that a pardon “was never discussed, but I wouldn't take it off the table.” NBC White House correspondent Kristen Welker reports for TODAY."  I guess that is not "evidence that Trump would issue a pardon."  Their denial has gone from malicious to ludicrous.

Julio Ross, Town Hall:  "Mattis Says There Is 'No Smoking Gun' Connecting Saudi Crown Prince to Khashoggi's Murder"

Of course there isn't.  But somewhere there is a very bloody bone saw.

And I think we are already primed for a Conservative humor break:

Keep telling yourselves that, guys.  The first explosion was the explosion in Democratic seats in the House.  The second one- fasten your seat belts, Republicans, it's going to be a rough ride.

Gee, wonder why that might be.  Think it has anything to do with the fact that she is an open racist who believes the Confederacy was right to go to war to keep slavery?  The real question is why White Mississippi voters are so filled with hatred that they sent this woman to Washington.

Brandon Morse, Red State:  "Nancy Pelosi Overwhelmingly Nominated for Speaker by Democrats, but Is Trump the True Winner?"

Good news for Republicans!  Isn't it always?  And hardly restricted to the wingnuts.  Here's New York Times' headline on the event:  "DEMOCRATS NOMINATE PELOSI TO BE SPEAKER BUT WITH SIGNIFICANT DEFECTIONS," and now, Times reporting of Paul Ryan's being elected to the same position a few years ago  "Mr. Ryan... won the overwhelming support of his colleagues in the nominating contest"

The vote for Pelosi was 203 to 32.  The vote for Ryan was 200 to 43.  I think you can see my point.

This story is everywhere I have looked on the right wing web this morning.  No story about "Trump administration is paying for the elimination of Yemen."  By the way, it took CNN less than a day to give this jackass the boot.  When do the American people do the same with Trump?

Dems? And here I seem to remember Obama saving GM and Chrysler, after the Bush economic collapse had effectively destroyed them.  Of course, I tend to remember true things, while Conservatives remember, well, things that are not so true.

And a couple of other things I "learned" today from various QAnon videos (Yes, they are still being cranked out):  Robert Mueller is actually the son of Heinrich Mueller, the Nazi head of the Gestapo!  I mean, who knew.  And mass arrests are taking place right now of Clinton associates in Arkansas, which apparently include just about anyone in that State who has committed a crime in the last forty years!  Guantanamo Bay prison has been remodeled to hold the thousands of Democratic traitors that will be arrested next!  And Jamal Khashoggi was actually murdered (for some reason) not by the Saudis but by MI6!

Like Linda said above, most people are unaware of what is happening right now.  Luckily for them.

There is just no end to the abuse of his position committed by the President of the United States, no end to the contemptible behavior he is willing to engage in.  But today marks perhaps the most degraded public misuse of his power of all.  Today Donald Trump published the following graphic on Twitter:

The President is demanding, in this graphic, the trial for treason, without a shred of evidence, of two former Presidents, a former Secretary of State, the special prosecutor who is investigating him, two former attorneys general, and a number of other people.  In brief, he is demanding the right to imprison or even possibly execute people for no other reason than their opposition to him, or their having been members of the opposing political party.

Is there a person alive who can now deny that this man is trying to establish himself as a dictator?  When is the point that the members of his own party react in a decent manner and put a stop to all of this?

Sad to say, the answer to that second question is probably, never.  The leadership of the Republican party has been carefully chosen and installed in their places by a handful of sociopathic billionaires whose clear goal is to turn this country into an oligarchic dictatorship that serves only their interests.  And these political figures know that, after having accepted the devil's shilling, they will be destroyed if they act responsibly.  And since they were selected for their willingness to mindlessly comply with the worst, most evil elements in the country, they will march en masse in the vanguard of destruction.

After a half century of propaganda and choking off real media, the Republicans have reached the promised land.  They have created a voting base that is so enraged and filled with hate that it will do their bidding and keep them in power.  So, this is what we end up with.  How easy it has proven to destroy everything that made the United States different from other countries, and leave behind nothing but naked fascism.

A Little Trump Foundation News

I just loved this, from Talking Points Memo:

"The Donald J. Trump Foundation took in no new money from outside groups last year and donated nothing, according to a 2017 tax return posted online Monday. Trump had promised before taking office to dissolve the foundation to avoid conflicts of interest with his duties as president."

He promised to stop charitable giving, in order to " avoid conflicts of interest."  He did not, however stop dealing with the Russians or the Saudis, or to milk the Federal government for millions of dollars spent at his own businesses. 

Well, I guess he has a point there.  As far as I can tell, Trump has no conflict of interest with the Russians and the Saudis.

Our Country Today

Immigrant children being attacked with tear gas.  From what I have read, I understand that this is CS gas, a stronger version of tear gas than the CN gas normally used by police in the United States.  This gas was shot into a foreign country in what is unquestionably an act of war.  The use of CS gas against civilians in any circumstance has been classified as a war crime since the mid 1990's.  Trump has made all of us complicit in this war crime.  It is hardly the first time for a Republican President; don't forget the use of torture by the Bush administration.  That was unforgivable, but at least it was not directed toward children and their mothers.

In the interest of full disclosure, during the Vietnam protest area, I was tear gassed many times, both with CN gas and a couple of times with CS gas.  CN isn't so bad; after the first couple of times it hardly slowed me down at all.  CS is another thing entirely, let me assure you.  It is extremely painful and almost totally debilitating while the effects last.  The notion of deliberately using it on children is an abomination.

Update:  And who could have predicted?  A few hours later, and Republicans are already claiming that this picture is posed.  Here is an "annotated" version of this photo, of an event that took place in front of a massive press presence, ludicrously claiming that it is fake news:
I'm not even going to bother explaining how idiotic this is.  It does, however, demonstrate how absolutely malicious the Republican denial of reality is.

Remembering Jerome Corsi

Isn't he cute?

Jerome Corsi has become the central figure of the week in the Mueller investigation.  You'd think that this would induce the media to look a little farther into his past.  But other than mentioning that he was the prime originator of the lie that Barack Obama was born in Kenya, little has been mentioned about him.  Here is a helpful list of a few of the other malignant smears Corsi has promulgated:

Corsi was the author of the book Unfit for Command, which detailed a totally false account of John Kerry's record in Vietnam, where in fact he was a highly decorated officer, as his publicly available military records showed.  This smear, carried almost without pushback by the mainstream press, was responsible in large part for the re-election of George W. Bush.

Corsi published a book in 2005 spreading a totally made-up horror story about Iran's supposed stockpile of nuclear weapons.  This makes him a seminal figure in today's current anti-Iran hysteria.

Corsi has spread absolutely unfounded nonsense about a supposed "North American Union" which Democrats intend to replace the United States, feeding into the xenophobic fear which makes up so much of the hatred that drives the Republican base.

Corsi has been among the leaders of 9/11 conspiracy mongering.

Corsi spent years writing for World Net Daily, a perennial favorite at Wingnut Wrapup, and worked for several years for Alex Jones.  Those are two of the greatest sources in the country of right wing lying propaganda.

Well, today Corsi said, in response to being offered a plea deal by the Mueller team, " I’d rather sit in prison and rot for as long as these thugs want me to."  Given his history and the damage he has done to the American people, that just might be a good deal.

Matching Signatures

I would like to make a point about the Republican ploy of using signatures that don't match to disqualify tens of thousands of Democratic votes.  I don't think this point has been made clearly enough:

Has anyone out there signed their name exactly the same twice?  I mean, literally ever. None of us is a machine, and our signatures vary in minor ways every time we sign them.  This Republican strategy is nothing but a ploy allowing them to reject any ballot they want.  The vast number of people who have their ballots rejected are never even notified about it, let alone given a chance to contest this action.  This is a massive Republican vote rigging scheme, and needs to be seen for what it is.  Instead, most people are just writing it off as sour grapes, when in fact, at least in Florida and Arizona, this behavior has a strong possibility of stealing a governor's seat and two Senators.

Carried right next to each other without a suggestion of irony.  Goldman Sachs would not invest $500 million in the company of perhaps America's greatest industrial innovator, but it was willing to invest $6.5 billion with a pack of Malaysian crooks.

And this is the most influential financial organization in the country.  There is a virtual revolving door between its corporate suites and high government positions.  Here is a partial list of Goldman alumni that work for Trump:

Stephen K. Bannon, chief strategist to the president and a former Goldman banker
Gary D. Cohn, director of the National Economic Council and Goldman Sachs president
Steven T. Mnuchin, Treasury secretary and Goldman partner

Well, I guess the company casting their lot with crooks isn't that surprising.

Donald Trump Appoints Monstrous New Attorney General

But of course, who would expect anything different...imagine an Attorney General whose contempt for the law makes the execrable Jeff Sessions look not so bad in retrospect.  Well, we've got him.

Trump has, in apparent open defiance of the law,* named one Matthew Whittaker to be our new "interim"  Attorney General.  Whittaker was a failed candidate for a county judgeship before he was snatched up by Trump, given an administrative role in the Justice Department, based apparently solely on his open opposition to the Mueller probe, and here he is, a year later, serving as Attorney General.  Here is some more information about him.

First, from an article at Daily Kos, which I most urgently suggest you read, some other information beyond the fact that he has attacked the Mueller investigation repeatedly:

"Whitaker was behind a secretive group that stepped in to protect members of the Trump campaign from allegations of meetings with Russian officials. That included trying to distract from the fact that Jeff Sessions lied about his meetings with the Russian ambassador in Senate testimony...The organization was also connected to spreading rumors that Christine Blasey Ford mistook Brett Kavanaugh for another high school classmate.

When not busy interfering in the Russia investigation, Whitaker also kept busy promoting a patent scam. As Miami New Times reports, Whitaker wasn’t just on the board of a company selling would-be inventors worthless (and nonexistent) “worldwide patents,” he also sent threatening letters to a former customer of the scam who complained about being taken for tens of thousands of dollars."

A criminal and a thug, behind not only the most malicious type of Republican behavior, but actual corruption reminiscent of that repeatedly engaged in by Trump himself.  What a great choice for Attorney General, huh?

And here is another read I recommend, by Ian Millheiser at Think Progress, covering an interview Whittaker once gave:

"In a 2014 interview, the man Donald Trump just picked to run the Department of Justice appeared to claim that Social Security is unconstitutional and that basic labor laws like the minimum wage must be struck down...Whitaker launches into a Trumpian rant against “chain immigration” and “people trying to bring illegal people and illegal drugs into our country.” He claims that climate change “doesn’t appear to be that significant or quite possibly isn’t man made,” and calls for the Department of Education to be “disbanded.”

"There are so many (bad rulings)...All New Deal cases that were expansive of the federal government. Those would be bad. Then all the way up to the Affordable Care Act and the individual mandate."

In other words, the Republican dream position:  Every single thing the Democrats have done for the American people in the last hundred years is unconstitutional and must be abolished. What an understanding of the rule of law in this country.  As I said, Trump's perfect pick for Attorney General.  I wrote a few days ago suggesting that in the coming two months, before Democrats can take over the House, we are going to see massive Republican atrocities such as the country has never had to experience; this is just the beginning.

*The rules for appointing an interim cabinet officer without Senate approval require that the person selected has been previously approved by the Senate for some other government appointment, which is not the case with Whittaker.  But of course, what do rules mean to a "President" who think he can unilaterally cancel parts of the Constitution?

And That Didn't Take Long

Bye bye Mueller, hello impeachment.

Of course, maybe the Democrats should just let it all pass.  The Washington Post is already paving the way for that view:

"Ms. Pelosi, wisely, declined to take the bait, reiterating her determination to use subpoena power if necessary but insisting Wednesday that oversight “does not mean we’ll go look for a fight.”

She would be well advised to stick to that measured approach, because the country does have recent experience with the excesses of investigation (does Benghazi ring a bell?) and the harm it can do to the atmosphere for legislation. In contrast to the attitude Mr. Trump exhibited Wednesday, Ms. Pelosi’s remarks suggest that she has the capacity to learn from experience."

The mainstream press, which showed next to no scruples about the Republicans using their control of Congress to conduct an endless series of "investigations" into what everyone knew were utterly baseless conspiracy theories, now has discovered how damaging any kind of Congressional oversight would be.  But don't worry, it will still be perfectly justifiable for the Republicans to continue to use the Senate to promote the most degraded conspiracy theories, and for the House too, the next time it is in Republican control. 

The more things change, the more the press (and the Republicans) stay the same.

A Warning

To those of you who think your anxiety will get a break after tomorrow:  The rest of this year is going to be a time of almost unimaginable abominations from the Republican party, and this is particularly true if Democrats take control of the House.

If Dems do win the House, the next two months will be the last time (at least for two years) that the Republicans will be in absolute control of the entirety of the Federal Government, and their rich backers will expect them to use that time to push through as much filthy, antidemocratic, corrupt legislation as the can. 

Here are a few things I expect to see between now and the new year:  Another massive tax cut aimed at the very top tenth of a percent of the nation, combined with effective tax increases on everyone else, massive cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, rules for renewable energy with no purpose but to make it too expensive to be competitive, elimination of the already weakened protections for minorities and women, savaging of environmental law, and as a distraction from all of this, a war somewhere, anywhere Republicans can start one.  My guess is Iran, or if the Republicans realize what a hopeless move that would be, Venezuela.  Both countries are major oil producers, and embroiling either in a war would mean hundreds of billions in profits for oil producing countries (and Trump buddies) Russia and Saudi Arabia, as well as right here at home.

And there are so many other things, like killing Obamacare once and for all, that I have not mentioned, or haven't even thought of.

Can anyone doubt that the Republicans will take this last unopposed opportunity to loot the country and do as much damage as they can to every well-intended government program in existence?  So, get ready; it's coming.

Mr. SMITH Goes To Washington

We are all familiar with the legendary SMOTI, the Stupidest Man On The Internet, aka Jim Hoft, whose website Gateway Pundit befouled itself again this week when one of his "reporters," one Jacob Wohl, made an utter fool of himself with one of the most colossally stupid lies ever heard, when he convened a press conference to allege that Robert Mueller forcibly dragged a woman out of a hotel bar in New York (in plain view of the other customers, apparently,) forced her up to his hotel room and then violently raped her, finishing with telling her his name and telling her that he was the head of the FBI, so she had better keep her mouth shut.  Boy, that beats Judge Kavanaugh's youthful dalliances by a long shot.  Well, the details of this almost incomprehensibly incompetent plot have received a great deal of coverage in the blogosphere, so I won't rehash them here.  For those who want to know more, I suggest this article from Wonkette, which pretty much takes a perfect tone toward the whole thing.

What I do want to cover in this post is another accusation against Mueller, which is equally insane, but which was forced out of our attention by the clowning of the Gateway Pundit guys.  This alleged malfeasance comes to us not from the SMOTI, but from a man I call the SMITH; the Stupidest Man In The House, Texas representative Louie Gohmert.  Here's the story, from Crooks and Liars:

"MUELLER’S MINIONS HELPED MOBSTER WHITEY BULGER ELIMINATE MOB COMPETITORS, says Congressman Louie Gohmert...In the extensive report, Gohmert covered Mueller’s shady past of helping mobster Whitey Bulger by eliminating mob competitors. was Mueller, first as an assistant US attorney then as the acting U.S. attorney in Boston, who wrote letters to the parole and pardons board throughout the 1980s opposing clemency for the four men framed by FBI lies."

So let's see if I have this straight now.  Robert Mueller, an extremely successful prosecutor during the eighties, put mobsters in prison and kept them there.  We can all agree about that.  As Louie's story goes, this was all done not to enforce Federal law, nor to advance his own career, but because Mueller was a corrupt tool of Whitey Bulger, another mobster.  No evidence offered to support this assertion, and as Crooks and Liars continues:

"...retired federal judge and Harvard Law School senior lecturer Nancy Gertner set the record straight in a New York Times editorial:

"There is no evidence that the assertion is true. I was the federal judge who presided over a successful lawsuit brought against the government by two of those men and the families of the other two, who had died in prison. Based on the voluminous evidence submitted in the trial...I can say without equivocation that Mr. Mueller, who worked in the United States attorney’s office in Boston from 1982 to 1988, including a brief stint as the acting head of the office, had no involvement in that case. He was never even mentioned."

So there you go.  Mueller was in cahoots with one mobster, which is proven by the fact that he put other mobsters in jail, which he only did to improve the business prospects of the first mobster, for which he in return received the payment of... apparently nothing.

Maybe not quite as colorful as the rape story, but equally outrageous.  Louie Gohmert should be driven out of public life for this disgusting smear, but instead his massively red district is about to easily send him back to the House, where he can continue working on behalf of the people, as he did in this case.

The Truth About the Birthright Citizenship Nonsense

"All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."-U. S. Constitution, Amendment 14

Before getting to my argument, I would like to remind you of a little history.  The absolute nature of this provision, which allows for no exceptions, exists for one reason:  by the time of its passage, in 1868, it was already clear that Southern dead enders were engaged in serious attempts to strip former slaves of their citizenship.  The law was passed to prevent this.  Its absolute character is  a result of the racist inclinations of many white Americans, and it is that racism, therefore, which bears the blame for the consequences of the fourteenth amendment.  Had these white people done the decent thing and truly reconciled with the victims of slavery, this amendment would have never been necessary; if they don't like it, it is their own fault that it exists.

Well, leaving that aside, I now want to talk about the true purpose of Trump's attempt to destroy this passage of the Constitution through royal decree.  And in stating what I am about to say, I feel called upon to state openly that I first realized in the 1980's that it was the intent of the Republican party to destroy any semblance of popular government in the United States, to replace it with an oligarchic dictatorship responsive only to the couple thousand sociopaths whom they would deliberately enrich until they had the money necessary to finance its takeover.  I have suffered endless derision over the years by my absolute defense of that notion; these days, I don't think it seems far-fetched to many.

This issue needs to be tied to another issue, to make the Republicans' attempts clear for what they really are, and that is the imprisoning of thousands of immigrant children in what are, not to dodge the issue, concentration camps.  This has been taken by the left as a racist attack, and it is certainly that, but it is also something far more malignant.  By selecting just about the weakest and most defenseless group they can find, and throwing them in these camps, the Republicans have begun the process of establishing that it is perfectly legal for the President of the United States to imprison people who have committed no crime, merely on his own whim.

Now, birthright citizenship, which is basically the same vicious story.  Trump and the Republicans have selected a large group of Americans who they have decided have essentially no support at all among his xenophobic base, and they are now claiming the right for the President of the United States, by fiat, and in a clearly unconstitutional act, to strip millions of their citizenship and eject them from the country (or perhaps place them in concentration camps, where history tells us what is likely to happen to them.)  If this happens, Republicans will have established the right of the President to revoke any passage of the Constitution.  There is a name for that sort of leader, as there is for those that claim the right to imprison citizens without any legal process whatsoever.

There is no doubt about this any more.  We are facing a highly developed and financed open attempt by the Republican party to reduce this country to a fascist dictatorship, and at this point the attempt is succeeding.  The dodging of the obvious necessary in order to deny this today is overwhelming, yet there are many millions of propagandized zombie voters out there who refuse to see the truth, and are thrilled to contribute to the open destruction of everything that ever made this country different from Nazi Germany, or fascist Italy, or Saudi Arabia  or Putin's Russia.  That is what these people yearn for, and any supposedly liberal person who refuses to acknowledge that is hastening the end of the American dream.

Political Violence By The Numbers

I've seen the following graphic a couple of places lately, but I think it reveals a fact that should be made clear to every American, so I'm posting it here, too.

I have often heard that right wingers commit more acts of political violence than any other group in this country, but I had no idea how one sided this was.  These people are monsters, and the President and leaders of his party are monsters too.  Today, Trump announced his intent to abrogate the Constitution by an "executive order." And with the Supreme Court now fully packed with corrupt Republican appointed Justices, who can say that he will be stopped if he tries?  Meanwhile, more and more criminal thugs with guns are out there to destroy anyone who gets in his way. 

In a sane country, this man would be impeached in one day if he tried to do this.  But we don't live in a sane country any more.  We live in a country where some destitute people fleeing terror a thousand miles from the United States are more of a threat than these fascist killers that roam among us.

Trump Treason Again

And on a massive scale.  We've seen this guy repeatedly make decisions that hurt the security of the United States and our allies while favoring the interests of Vladimir Putin, over and over again.  Now, here is a gigantic one which has received almost no coverage in the mainstream press, and what coverage it has received has missed the point entirely.  In fact, even left wing sources seem not to have recognized the real significance of this action.

What I am talking about is Trump's stated intention to abrogate the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, negotiated by Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in the 1980's.  This treaty forbade either country from deploying any land based missiles with ranges between 500 and 5500 kilometers.

The United States did in fact destroy about 1,000 nuclear missiles after this treaty was signed (the Soviet Union destroyed about 2,000.)  But other than the financial loss, the treaty meant little to us because our supposed enemies, the Soviet Union and China, were well over 5500 kilometers from our missile bases, which were located in the middle of the United States.

The situation for the Soviets, however, was considerably different, as can be seen from a glance at this map:
In fact, the forbidden range for Russian nuclear missiles includes virtually all of Europe.  And that is the point:

The U. S. abrogation of this treaty will allow Vladimir Putin to deploy nuclear missiles targeting the entire continent of Europe.

Let the NATO nations try to stand up to Russia then.

Sorry to resort to big red letters here (something that I have never done before,) but I think it is important for Americans to realize what an act of treachery, of out and out treason, Trump's backing out of this treaty will be.  For essentially nothing in return, Trump will be enabling Putin to hang a sword over all of Europe, if they dare to try to stand up to him.  This is a massive, horrible payoff to Putin for putting Trump into the White House.  Here is your collusion, Mr. Trump, written in gigantic letters for all to see.  Here is your betrayal of not only your own country, but of all our European allies, in order to benefit Putin. 

In a sane country, this action alone would be the end of Trump's Presidency, and in fact the end of his life outside a Federal prison.  But I guess we don't live in a sane country any more.  Too bad, really.

Wingnut Wrapup

Sorry, people, Wingnut Wrapup seems to be back, at least for a little while.  I just feel that most of us in the rational world are still only vaguely aware of the hatred and lies that make up the steady diet of right wingers.  Not that I feel happy about exposing you to it all, but we need to be aware of the massive amount of stuff like this that is out there.  I know these Wingnut Wrapups tend to be long, but let me assure you that I could make any one of them on any day four times as long and not come even close to including all of the massive amount of this garbage that is out there.  What follows is nothing but a representative sample.

Now, a little coverage of the Republican party writhing in agony as it attempts to blot out the truth that the MAGA bomber and the Pittsburgh terrorist are a product of their own actions.  I just want to note first, that it is only a couple of hours as I write a good part of this since the latest right wing mass shooting, and I have already heard a Republican on TV saying this is not the time to talk about gun laws, because of course they went there.  Needless to say, their whining and phony outrage will be much further developed in future days.  Anyway, back to the subject, starting with how things work out for you when you just can't stop lying: a master class in the subject from the legendary Stupidest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Report: Bodybuilder Cesar Sayoc Admits the “Pipe Bombs” Wouldn’t Hurt Anyone – And He Didn’t Want to Hurt Anyone...Many pundits suspected they were fake bombs meant to scare the public...It looks like those people were right."

Except, of course, that Jim is lying.  Jim's "reports," of course, come from who knows where. The FBI stated that these are absolutely real bombs.  But boy, if right wingers ever need lying, they need it now.

They caught a serial terrorist bomber in three days.  Boy, that makes them look like idiots.  And a reply to this brilliant remark:

Trying to hurt the GOP by catching a terrorist.  Well, they said it, not me.

Oh yes, they bided their time.  They never called Obama a Communist or a Muslim, or accused him of not being an American citizen.  They never compared him and his wife to apes, or spread a malicious rumor that the first lady was an ex football player who had a sex change operation.  They never called him the antichrist.  They never accused him of being a gay prostitute or of having committed multiple murders to silence his critics.  They never held dozens of Congressional "hearings" to air entirely made up scandals.  They never worked day and night for eight years to destroy everything he tried to do.  And they never unleashed a plague of racism in their followers because Obama committed the sin of being born black.  What a load of crap.

Just spit it out there, John, let us know how you really feel.  By the way, I'm guessing that you don't think it was our problem when the Germans killed several million German citizens.  To you that was probably just a good start.
