Guns and Dreamliners

Here's an editorial from the New York Times that conveniently sidesteps the truth:

"One of Connecticut’s gun manufacturers, PTR Industries, is departing the state in a melodramatic huff for gun-friendly South Carolina, complaining about the tightened gun safety laws enacted in Hartford by conscience-stricken legislators following the Newtown gun massacre of 20 children and 6 educators last December.

“One hundred percent of our product line is illegal in Connecticut,” explained John McNamara, the company’s vice president for sales. “They just want to collect our tax dollars on a product that they don’t think is safe to own.”

Now, let me state the obvious:  This company is not moving because of gun laws.  They are taking the opportunity to move to a "right to work" State, where they can pay their employees half what they had to in Connecticut, and are just thrilled to have an excuse to blame it on the government instead of the real culprit- their own greed.

This brought to mind a question I've had for some time, but which I've never seen anyone talk about in public.  We all have seen articles about the trouble Boeing is having with its 787 Dreamliner passenger jet.  I'm just curious- do you think that just might be because they dumped their experienced union workforce in Washington State, and moved to South Carolina, to hire a bunch of cheap, ignorant, inexperienced people to assemble the 787s?

Just wondering.

Fair Politics, Republican Style

And it's just fine with our wonderful mainstream press, too.  Here's a step by step guide, courtesy of Darryl Issa:

1.  Congressman Issa orders the office of the Inspector General to conduct a survey of the IRS' investigation of political groups for possible violations of their tax free status.  He further orders the Inspector General to restrict the investigation to right wing groups.

2.  Congressman Issa then dramatically reveals that the Inspector General has found lots of right wing groups that the IRS checked out, and no left wing groups, neglecting to mention in public that he had explicitly ordered the Inspector General to ignore left wing groups.

3.  Congressman Issa proceeds to hold day after day of hearings, mesmerizing the members of our mainstream media, into allegations of partisan behavior at the IRS which he knows to be false.

4.  Congressman Issa releases excerpts of committee interviews which seem to suggest that the Obama White House was using the IRS for partisan purposes.  Despite repeated requests, he refuses to release the transcripts of the entire interviews.

5.  Finally fed up, Democratic members of Congressman Issa's committee release the complete transcripts, which definitively prove that the Obama White House had nothing to do with the IRS "scandal," and that there was nothing political about it at all- something which Congressman Issa knew perfectly well from the very beginning.

6.  As a last blow to Congressman Issa's public claims, it was revealed that the IRS had investigated many left leaning groups for similar potential violations, something which Congressman Issa knew since the beginning, but which he deliberately kept the American public from knowing.

7.  At this point, the mainstream press curiously lost interest in the entire subject, and Congressman Issa does not even face public criticism for the misuse of his power in this way, insuring that things like this will happen over and over again, whenever a Democrat wins an election.

The result of all of this?  The public's trust of Obama took an eight percent dive, based on a lying smear perpetrated by Republicans in Congress.  And, more importantly, the whole subject of the blatant illegality of the behavior of Tea Party groups, Karl Rove's American Crossroads and other similar organizations run on rich people's money has become toxic.  So the IRS is leaving it to these groups to certify themselves as being "social welfare" organizations.  We're now relying on the likes of Karl Rove and the birther movement to tell us the truth, solely because they will scream and lie and smear us endlessly if they don't get their way.

This is no way to run a society.  Not if you want it to last very long.

The Jerusalem "Settlements"- What Are They?

A note about this post:  With John Kerry's current visit to the Middle East, the issue of Israeli "settlements" has come back into the news, because the Israeli government announced the approval of building permits for a couple hundred apartment units in East Jerusalem, immediately adjacent to the city.  This is a post I wrote four years ago about these settlements, which I think may still be interesting to people.

Having spent a reasonable amount of time in Jerusalem and the adjacent areas of the West Bank, I get the feeling that there is a lot of misunderstanding on both sides on the issue of "settlements" in the Jerusalem area, and I would like to write about what I think I know.

I want to say first of all, that nothing I have to say here is in any way intended to be a defense of Benjamin Netanyahu, who I have always believed to be an American-style right wing warmongering demagogue more like Newt Gingrich or Tom DeLay than anyone Israelis are used to seeing.

To explain my viewpoint, I would like to refer to a couple of maps of Jerusalem. You may need to click on them to see them properly, as they have a lot of detail.

The first map I would like you to see is this one, from the early 1880's The colored parts represent the old city, lying behind walls which had enclosed relatively the same area since the first century A.D. As you can see, as late as this time, only a hundred and thirty years ago, there was almost nothing of Jerusalem outside the old city and adjacent areas such as the Mount of Olives, across from the temple mount. Thus, very little of what exists outside of this area really can be considered as part of the holy Jerusalem revered by all three major monotheistic religions.

Next, let's turn to a current map of Jerusalem:

The tan area on this map represents the boundaries of the current built-up area of Jerusalem. The dark blue area is the old city. The current dividing line between East and West Jerusalem runs in an approximate north-south line through the old city.

Here is the funny thing about Jerusalem: It is one of the oldest cities in the world, yet except for a small part of it, it is more contemporary with American cities than the great cities of Europe or Asia. No one can really claim that his ancestors have long lived in the greatest part of Jerusalem.

Now, let's look at this third map:

Israeli "settlements" are shown in this map in the darker blue color. Also shown is the Israeli constructed ring road, designed to eliminate some of the absolutely maddening driving conditions that exist in the city. I can tell you that, even with the ring road, driving for more than a few minutes in Jerusalem is enough to send a person into deep insanity.

Well, as you can see from this map, most of these developments are inside the ring road, or just outside of it. Remember that Jerusalem is built on top of rather steep hills, and most of the land shown as undeveloped inside the ring road is nearly unbuildable.

Now let's look at a couple of pictures of one of the largest of these developments, Maale Adumim. First is a view of it:

I wonder if your reaction to this is the same as mine was when I saw things like this in real life- this is hardly what I expected in the way of what you would call a "settlement."

Now, here is another picture:

This is a view looking back toward Jerusalem from Maale Adumim. What you see in the foreground is what is generally described as an Arab "village." In the background is Mount Scopus.

What point am I trying to make here? Words are powerful things. The word "village" implies that this area is somewhere that people have lived for a long, long time, and have deep family roots, while the word "settlement" carries heavy implications from the time of colonialism, and conveys the notion that someone has come along and just plopped themselves down on someone else's territory.

We actually have a far more appropriate name for such areas here in America. These both are neither settlements nor villages- they are suburbs.

I want to state that I am opposed to a great majority of the Jewish settlements in the West Bank (and yes, I have been to a number of them too.) But these areas around Jerusalem are not in the same category at all, and treating them as hostile incursions only serves to prolong the stubbornness of parties on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We should deal with the settlements that really are a part of an intransigent, irredentist religious movement, and not treat the natural growth of a modern city as some sort of abomination.

Justice- American Style

I'm sure we will all be overjoyed by news of this victory for judicial fairness in the military:

"The Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces threw out the conviction of Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III of Plymouth, Mass., who has served about half of his 11-year sentence.

According to the ruling posted on the court's website Wednesday, the judges agreed with Hutchins, who claimed his constitutional rights were violated when he was held in solitary confinement without access to a lawyer for seven days during his 2006 interrogation in Iraq."

Solitary confinement!  Seven days!

I am sure we are all anxiously looking forward in coming days to when the "Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces" deals similarly with a certain hundred or so military detainees who have been held for ten years in prison, most of them without charges ever being filed against them.

Or is "justice" only for white Christians?  Let's just wait and find out.

I would be able to say "I Told You So"

If I weren't so damned lazy that I never wrote the post about Paula Deen that I thought of writing a couple of days ago.  Now comes this story from MarketWatch:

"Today in The Wall Street Journal, Keach Hagey raises another point that may have worked against Deen: Ratings for her show, “Paula’s Best Dishes,” had been sliding steadily since 2011—particularly among the younger demographic groups that advertisers covet.

Hagey’s sources note that Deen’s show, “Paula’s Best Dishes,” falls into the category of “’dump and stir’ instructional food shows” that trace their lineage through Emeril Lagasse all the way back to Julia Child. But that format has been falling out of fashion among younger viewers, who have gravitated toward competitions and reality-show formats. Ratings for “Best Dishes” were down 22% among viewers in the 18-to-49-year-old group, and Hagey reports that Deen’s agent had been bogged down in contract negotiations with the Food Network for several weeks before the racism controversy emerged."

After all the TV shows I've worked on over the years, how could I have ignored the most basic rule of TV:  It's never about the story or the show or artistic expression or common decency- It's always about the money.  The minute I heard that Paula Deen's show was cancelled, supposedly because of some racist comments she made, my first thought was, "Man, her ratings must have gone into the tank."  Why didn't I trust my vast knowledge (heh) of TV and write that post?  Now, everyone would know that Green Eagle is a media genius. Instead, I'm just reduced to squawking away after the fact.

Priceless Verbal Exchange of the Day

Michelle Bachmann:  ""Marriage was created by the hand of God. No man, not even a Supreme Court, can undo what a holy God has instituted."

Nancy Pelosi:  "Who cares?"

You go, girl.  And I don't mean Michelle.

Supreme Court Scorecard

We won the right to marry someone of the same sex, and we lost the right to vote in fair elections.

Anyone who thinks that makes for a good week is crazy.

Equality for Women, Texas Style

From Fox News (who else?)

"Texas woman set to be 500th execution in state"

Not, by the way, that you need to feel too sorry for her.  She hacked a neighbor to death with a butcher knife, cut her finger off to get her wedding ring, pawned it and immediately spent the money on drugs.  She was also charged with killing two other elderly women in similar brutal fashion, but was not tried for the murders after she was sentenced to death for this one.

The Death of Democracy

I have long argued that the 5-4 division that Republicans have forced on the Supreme Court was not a split between liberals and conservatives, but between four decent, centrist justices and five corrupt criminals who are nothing but sleeper agents, committed to destroying democracy in this country so that the richest people in the world, and the corporations they own, can run America as an effective despotism.

These evil people have not needed to do their dirty work very often to steal control of the country from the people.  Oh sure, there are a thousand mean-spirited decisions they have made over the years.  But three acts stand out.

The first was the destruction of the Presidential election process to place a crooked, terminally corrupt person in the White House- someone who in eight years destroyed our nation's economy, and deliberately destroyed the government's ability to function.  The second was the Citizens' United decision, which essentially allowed the richest Americans to buy all of the elected officials in the country.

The third act of corruption came today.  We know perfectly well, at this point, that the Republican party and what it represents cannot ever again in this country win fair, open national elections.  Too many people have seen the evil that lies behind the curtain, so that today, only the oldest, whitest, stupidest voters still support them. So these criminal Justices, with neither history nor law on their side, summarily ruled that Republicans are allowed to engage in massive action to prevent Democrats from voting.  From now on, for the foreseeable future, here is the story of politics in the United States:  Democratic votes, versus Republican cheating, fraud and dirty tricks to keep Democrats from the polls.  This is not democracy.

Remember today- June 26, 2013. Today is the day that democracy finally died in the United States of America.

Paul Ryan is an Ignorant Jerk

In case you didn't know that already.  Here he goes:

"Look, I'm a conservative who believes that our constitutional principles, founding principles are the key principles for the day and they're the best if applied to our problems to solve problems," Ryan said during an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "And we need to have that kind of temperament. This is why I'm focused on poverty these days, this is why I'm focused on—we've got the 50th anniversary of the war on poverty coming up next year. We don't have much to show for it."
He argued that "there are better ideas that we can use to approach and attack the root causes of poverty" and that the right "should not cede the moral high ground on this issue."

The "founding principles" are the key principles to apply to solve our problems?  The science of economics essentially did not exist in the late 1700's, when the Constitution was written.  Is this bogus pseudo-expert really telling us that we are supposed to just ignore everything that has been learned in the last 230 years?

No, he does not believe that.  What he really believes is that it is perfectly acceptable for him to tell any lie to further the interests of his rich masters, and if he defiles the memory of the real founding fathers in the process, well, that's just great if it leaves the Koch brothers a little richer.

And this corrupt dumbass has been crowned as the intellectual voice of the Republican party.  This is the whole story of our country today- the fight against willful ignorance and all-consuming greed.  And right now, ignorance and greed are winning.

More Proof that the Human Race Has Lost the Evolutionary Race

And is about to go extinct:

"2013 – Rick Santorum, former U.S. senator and GOP presidential candidate, is now CEO of EchoLight Studios, the first movie company to produce, finance, market and distribute faith-based, family films across all releasing platforms. Santorum announced his new venture Saturday, June 22, on FNC’s “The Huckabee Show.”

EchoLight’s upcoming first theatrical, THE REDEMPTION OF HENRY MYERS, is slated for a fall 2013 release.  Meanwhile, EchoLight’s second theatrical is in post-production, a film based on the inspiring story of Illinois basketball player Eric “Hoovey” Elliott, starring Patrick Warburton and Lauren Holly, and directed by SOUL SURFER’s Sean McNamara, to release in 2014.

“This is the right place and right time, and I’ve jumped in with both feet,” Santorum said, having spent the past year helping EchoLight develop and grow. “I often say that culture is upstream from politics, and I know entertainment  also can be strength and light for people who want to be uplifted and reinforced in their values.”

Oy vay.  Oy vay iss mir.  How could any movie company on earth hire this miserable, ignorant schmendrick to be their CEO?  Exactly how fast are they intending to wash their entire bankroll down the sewer?  What the hell do they think he knows about making movies (let alone anything else)?

Here's more that will have you rolling in the aisles screaming with laughter:

"EchoLight’s commitment to new filmmakers already has impressive numbers:

a $250,000 commitment to produce and distribute a new work by the winner of the Short Film category in the 2013 San Antonio Independent Christian Film Festival
a multi-year, multi-million agreement to produce films from Liberty University’s Cinematic Arts program with production wrapped on the first film from that effort
up to $1 million pledged to produce and distribute a new work from the Best Film winner in this year’s 168 Film Project."

Or about as much as I remember that we spent on permanent sets a couple of years ago for the Starz TV series Magic City.  Man, that is impressive.  And imagine how those films from the Liberty University Cinematic Arts program are going to push Man of Steel and World War Z right out of the theaters!

I would be unable to believe that it is humanly possible to live in such delusion, if it were not for the fact that these are the same people who believe that the world is 6,000 years old.

And Rick Santorum is going to run the whole thing! The Evangelical Louis B. Mayer! Because it takes exactly zero knowledge or experience to run a motion picture studio, just Faith In Jesus.  You could just as easily imagine Intel hiring Mike Tyson to be its CEO.

Well, the only saving grace out of this entire pile of dreck is that every penny they squander on this is one penny that won't be spent buying more legislators for the Koch brothers.  Other than that, man is this a disaster in the making.

Wingnut Wrapup

Yeah, Green Eagle has been neglecting Wingnut Wrapup lately.  Well, not exactly- he has just been waiting for a legal opinion about whether he could be sued for boring people to death if he repeats much of the turgid garbage Republicans have been dishing out lately.  Here's the best of a miserable crop:

John Ransom, Town Hall:  Certainly the GOP has helped establish a track record of what might be the sorriest 25 years of governing in American history. But it’s because they have supported watered-down versions of the Democrat agenda."

Yes, we Republicans have wrecked the country.  But it's all the Democrats' fault.  No, really.  Take John's word on this one.  Would he lie to you?

Mona Charen, Town Hall:  "I've pored over some of the research (on climate change) but can't hazard a guess as to whether the alarmists or the skeptics are right."

She can't tell whether 99.84% of the peer reviewed papers are likely to be right, or whether the other 0.16% are.  This is a new tactic of the right- "Poor little old me just can't understand all this scientific talk, so I guess we'd just better do nothing and let the Koch brothers have their way."  Antonin Scalia used it just a few days ago when he claimed to be unable to comprehend the meaning of a three or four paragraph summation of the nature of DNA.  It's "The argument from proud ignorance," I guess.

Bob Owens, Moron Extraordinaire:  "I can understand why South Carolina Representative Jeff Duncan is uncomfortable with the thought of IRS agents armed with AR-15s.  Rank-and-file IRS agents need staplers, not firearms, and none need semi-automatic Ar-15s or selective-fire M4/M16s."

Of course, it is perfectly wonderful for mentally ill, violent people to own them.  But government agents?  No way.  After all, those mass shootings that we see every few days?  All committed by IRS agents, right?

Stephen Green, PJ Media:  "Did the Administration Hack CBS News Reporter’s Computer?"

A CBS reporter got a virus on her computer.  The right wing blogs are full of accusations that Obama ordered this himself, since no one ever heard of getting a virus any other way.

Selwyn Duke, Renew America:  "Marco Rubio is dead to me"

And his cat too.  Listen, Selwyn, no matter how hard you try, no one is going to hire a wanker like you to be the new Tony Soprano.

Alan Keyes, Renew America:  "Impeachment now!"

In 2004, Obama ran for a Senatorial seat in Illinois.  Alan Keyes was his opponent.  Obama got over 70% of the vote.  Keyes never recovered from the loss and has spent much of the last nine years viciously attacking Obama.  Yet this disturbed sore loser is still a Repubican favorite.  It's all they've got.

Selwyn Duke, Renew America:  "Rise in female breadwinners means America is a loser"

Man, I don't even have a sarcastic remark for that one.  What kind of pathetic excuse for political discourse is this anyway?

Floyd Brown, Capitol Hill Daily:  "U.S. Government Collapse Inches Closer...Each Friday I report on the impending and inevitable collapse of the U.S. Federal Government. "

EACH FRIDAY!  I report it every Friday! And if I live long enough, some day it will come true!  Oh, boy!

Cal Thomas, Town Hall: "Let the broadcast networks not make a "play" for the Fox audience. That just means more success and more money for Roger Ailes."

Until the Fox audience is all dead.  Which, giving that they average over 65 years old, and largely come from the most unhealthy parts of the country, will be any time now.  Thank heaven.

Julie Gunlock, Town Hall:  "Radical Environmentalists Should Mind Their Own Business"

Solutions to our problems, Conservative style.  Here's more from Julie:

"That’s a fact often lost in the conversation about chemicals. Organizations vilify them, and suggest that their benefits are negligible and use is unnecessary. Yet these chemicals actually make products better, safer, more durable, longer lasting, and a lot more affordable"

Until they kill you.

Mara Zebest, Gateway Pundit:  "If Africa fails to arrest Obama when he visits, the U.S. should certainly arrest him when he returns. Just pick from a multitude of crimes: Fast & Furious, Benghazi, IRS, NSA, arming Syria, not eligible to sit in office—any of these crimes are treasonous against the constitution and the interests of the U.S."

Jim Hoft has managed to find a guest poster who is even dumber and more deranged than he is.  Amazing.

Star Parker, Town Hall:  "Two Black Democrats Become Republicans in Louisiana "

Two.  TWO! In Louisiana!  Where people always vote for good government!  Give up, liberals, you're doomed!

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "White House Tweets Picture of Obama With a Scary Gun for Father's Day"

This may just be the stupidest post yet from Town Hall's favorite blog bimbo.  Here's the picture:

Man, that is scary, huh?

Armstrong Williams, Town Hall:  "Donald Trump: An American Icon Worth Celebrating"

Grow up already, Armstrong.

Carol Platt Liebeau, Town Hall:  "Transcripts Won't Help the IRS"

Not with Republicans.  Even when they prove that Republicans were lying about Obama as part of their ongoing effort to gin up an excuse to impeach him.  Because Republicans don't care about the truth.  And they really care about impeaching the black guy.

Dana Loesch, Red State:  "9/11 began as an immigration problem... Mohammed Atta was pulled over for a traffic violation and never showed in court"

Right.  If we just kicked every Muslim that ever got a traffic ticket out of the country, our problems would all be solved.

Joe the Plumber, Red State:  "If the Bush years opened up Pandora’s Box when it comes to spending and snooping, then Barack Obama has blown the Box up. It took the Tea Party to step in and at least stop the bleeding in 2012, hoping the Republicans would grow a pair and at a minimum defund ObamaCare; and in a perfect world, field a candidate in 2012 that would flush these Chicago Thugs, Marxists and Traitors out of our system for a couple decades"

Oh, so it was the teabaggers that set the Federal budget back on a path toward sustainability.  And how, exactly, did they do that?    And Joe, you did run a candidate that would "flush these Chicago Thugs, Marxists and Traitors out of our system."  He just got the crap kicked out of him by an electorate which, however misled by your billion dollar campaign of lies, still knew enough not to fall for the best candidate you guys had.  And by the way, Joe the Plumber?  Someone is still paying him to speak out?  Really, how lacking in talent are the Republicans?

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Enough Is Enough… ‘Gang of 8′ Members Jeff Flake & John McCain Face Recall Petitions"

Yippee!  Republicans eat their own!  They won't be satisfied until their party is 100% Heinrich Himmler compatible, and Green Eagle wishes them the best of luck.

Bryan Fischer, Renew America:  "What Jesus would say to an illegal alien... Return home. Obey the law. Leave the place where you have no legal right to be and return to the place where you do."

That must have been in the same little known book of the Bible where Jesus told the parable of the Bad Samaritan.

Michael Bresciani, Renew America:  "Being 'left behind' doesn't strictly mean you've missed the rapture"

No, of course not.  Look at you, Michael- you were left behind when they passed out the brains.

Ellis Washington, Renew America:  "Happy 65th Birthday Justice Clarence Thomas"

Yeah.  Clarence Thomas should be happy that he is not spending his 65th birthday in prison.

World Net Daily:  "NSA has total access via your computer system"

Well, if they listen to my wife's music, I hope they remember to pay for it.  "Paul Ryan On Worst Thing About Being In Congress: People Lie To Your Face"

You sure you weren't looking in the mirror when that happened, Paul?

Stephen Green, PJ Media:  "Man of Steel: ‘I’m As American As It Gets’"

But...but Superman is an illegal immigrant.  Deal with it, Stephen.

From the journal Nature Climate Change*, via Think Progress, the following little map:

Of course, we are still going to be daily inundated with articles like this:

"There is a reason we keep hearing about "climate change," the replacement code words for "global warming." As Rucker points out about the fear-mongers, "They pay no heed to real world observational data..."

"...there is NO GLOBAL WARMING! Global warming is nothing more than just another hoax...Global warming is being used to generate fear and panic. Those behind this movement are using it to control people's lives and for financial gain."

...endless ravings produced by a satanic collaboration of energy companies and right wing lunatics, which have succeeded in seeing to it that over half of all Americans don't believe that man-induced climate change is real. Those of us who live in the real world know what the result of this is going to be in a few more decades, but the oil company owners are nothing but rich psychopaths, and the the right wing lunatics are, well, lunatics.  So, on we go, step by step, into the abyss.

*Sorry- original article is behind a paywall, so I won't bother linking to it.  If you really want to pay to read it, the Think Progress post has a link to it.

Why We Can't Have a Decent Country

Here's a depressing story from the Los Angeles Times this morning:

"WASHINGTON — The Senate is poised to approve a military-style buildup along the U.S. border with Mexico, doubling the number of Border Patrol agents on the ground and tripling the number of drones overhead — a $30-billion plan designed to win the votes of as many as 15 Republican senators for the immigration reform bill.

The plan would add so many new agents to the Border Patrol — 20,000 — that if all were deployed at once, they could be stationed roughly every 250 feet along the border, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

Spending that amount — more than four times what senators initially had proposed — would also be a boost to defense contractors..."

This idiotic waste of billions of dollars is necessary to get Republicans to vote for an immigration bill which they largely all supported before it occurred to them that they could damage Obama by voting against it.  So, it takes a thirty billion dollar bribe to get them to do the right thing.  At the same time, we have this spectacle from the Republicans on the farm bill:

"The embarrassing loss for Republican leaders was the first time in at least 40 years that the House voted down a farm bill.

Food stamp cuts are the major issue for the farm bill. The House bill called for the largest cuts in a generation - $20 billion - that would disqualify 2 million poor Americans. Democrats, said it set unduly harsh work rules and gave states incentives to cut off recipients. Tea Party-backed Republicans wanted even steeper cuts in food stamps."

Twenty billion over ten years needs to be taken from poor people, and that isn't even enough for large numbers of Republicans in Congress.  But it is okay to loot the treasury of thirty billion to give to defense contractors for nothing.  And so it is now impossible for the government to do the decent, necessary thing ever, unless the legislation comes with massive giveaways to Republicans and their campaign contributors.

This is a recipe for national decline, which is apparently what the Republican party wants.

Tea Party Fail Again

Well, today is the big day!  The great national Teabag March on the IRS in Washington!  A march which is going to change everything!

"Tea Party Set for Mass “Audit the IRS” Rally in DC – A massive and unprecedented “Audit the IRS” Tea Party rally is set to take place in Washington, DC on June 19 at noon.

Organized by local and national Tea Party groups and patriots nationwide, thousands, if not millions, are set to converge on our nation’s capital in a display of unity, protesting the IRS’ targeting of the Tea Party and conservative groups."

Thousands, if not MILLIONS!

A march with a stellar constellation of right wing stars that must certainly attract a massive group of angry American patriots!  Here's a description (in advance) from the Washington Times:

"Party like it’s 2009? Fourteen Republican lawmakers, media mavens and liberty-minded activists will crowd onto the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Wednesday, ready to rumble as they did four years ago when the tea party first crackled to life.

The bodacious group will assemble for the “Audit the IRS” rally organized by the Tea Party Patriots, which is intent on reminding the nation that the federal agency paid excruciatingly close attention to conservative groups in recent years. Yes, C-SPAN will be there, with coverage from noon to 3 p.m.

Among the lawmakers who will have their say: Sens. Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul and Michele Bachmann, plus Reps. Jim Bridenstine, Dave Camp, John Fleming, Louie Gohmert, Tom Graves, Tim Huelskamp, Mike Kelly, Steve King, Tom Price and Matt Salmon.

Also at the podium: Glenn Beck, filmmaker Stephen Bannon and Sonnie Johnson of Breitbart News, radio hostDana Loesch, “Gateway Pundit” Jim Hoft and constitutional lawyer Jordan Sekulow, among many other speakers."

Man, did they leave any wingnut wackos out?  So, how did they do?  Can we do anything better than turn to that paragon of Conservative Honesty and Far Reporting, Jim Hoft?

The American Patriots are Defending Our Freedom!  Well, sort of.  Here's an aerial photo of the demonstration:

A massive crowd!  Let me first point out that, in a country that has seen several liberal protests in Washington in recent years that attracted hundreds of thousands of participants, even Jim Hoft's claimed attendance of 10,000 would be a miserable failure.  But there are not 10,000 people here; by my count there are somewhat less than a thousand.  This is not even a failure- it is a grotesque humiliation.

I have reported on these events over and over again, all with the same purpose- to document the virtual nonexistence of this movement, which has been hailed by the mainstream press over and over again as a major force in American political life.  It is a total sham.

Well, as I have been writing this post, this pathetic event came to an end, and with it the CSPAN wall-to-wall coverage of it.  If you think the above photo is pathetic, take a look at this crowd shot of the people left at the end of the protest:

As I said, this is beyond pitiful.  This represents the supposedly massive movement which has taken total control of the Republican party and which is given the right to speak for the American people.  Even the presence of their biggest stars can't produce a turnout bigger than this, and yet Democrats quiver in fear at them.

It is long past the time that our leaders make it clear that these Conservative stars and their followers speak for no one except the most deluded and ignorant fringe in the country (and for the Koch brothers, of course, who finance these pathetic displays.)  It is time for Democratic politicians make it clear that they are going to do what is right for the country, regardless of how loud these people shriek their bigoted, self-serving demands.

Fat chance, huh?

Oh, and when, exactly, is someone on Wall Street going to be held responsible for their rigged game that destroyed the economy?

Update:  I just caught Chris Matthews' coverage of this event on his show today.  He allowed several of the jackasses who spoke there to appear on TV spreading their errant nonsense.  What he never once saw fit to do was show the essentially nonexistent crowd.  Thus, even the allegedly liberal end of the mainstream press collaborates in pretending that this miserable handful of people deserve an equal voice with the tens of millions of Americans who continue to suffer due to the greed of the rich and the stupidity of a small number who have fallen for the rich people's lies.

Update:  I have now seen a ground level picture of this demonstration that seems to show a slightly larger crowd than the aerial photo above- perhaps 1200 or 1600.  It's hard to tell from that angle.  This still represents a miserable showing and doesn't affect my comments in any way, but just for accuracy, I wanted to add this comment.

Thanks to John in Oregon for motivating me to get this post out.

Can't Wait to Hear More About This Story

Man, what next?

"ALBANY, N.Y. — An industrial mechanic with General Electric Co., who is also allegedly a member of the Ku Klux Klan, designed a deadly mobile radiation device...The device was intended to be a truck-mounted radiation particle weapon that could be remotely controlled and capable of silently aiming a lethal beam of radioactivity at its human targets. The concept was that victims would eventually die from radiation sickness."

What a wonderful country we live in, where an enterprising American Patriot can do so much to protect our Freedom!

Time For Us To Go

This news from TPM:

"KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s president says he will not pursue peace talks with the Taliban unless the United States steps out of the negotiations and the militant group stops its violent attacks on the ground."

Let's not forget that this "President" of Afghanistan is a former executive of the Union Oil Company, who was hand-selected by our former oil guys Bush and Cheney to take over one of the most troubled countries on earth- sort of an international example of the "let's put a horse guy in charge of FEMA" strategy that worked out so well after Hurricane Katrina.  What Afghanistan got is just what you would expect from an oil guy- one of the most unashamedly corrupt governments on earth.

So, who cares what Karzai has to say?  He doesn't want us interfering?  Leave him to deal with the Taliban on his own.  Today would be a perfect day to announce that we are finally giving up on the hopeless task that Bush and Cheney's incompetence left us, and cutting our losses.  Of course, every day since Obama was inaugurated would have been a perfect day for that, but how about seizing the opportunity now, and just getting out?  Maybe we could get the Republicans to go along with this idea if we promised to spend all the money we save on tax cuts for the rich.

Just a Graphic

From an excellent article by Avedon Carol* on the subject:

I'm so tired of saying the same thing over and over again, that I'll just let someone else say it for once.

The Beast Slouches Toward All of Us

Or, The American Taliban Strikes.

As Rod Serling might say, I introduce you to one David Lane.  David works for the American Family Association, listed by the SPLC as a hate group.  It was founded by Donald Wildmon, one of the people most responsible for mainstreaming right wing Christian intolerance, and features as a spokesman Bryan Fischer, one of the most vile hatemongers in the country.

Well, David Lane's activities range far beyond the reprehensible AFA.  He has served as an adviser to  Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Michelle Bachmann and others, and is currently a director of outreach for the Presidential campaign of Rand Paul.

Well, Mr. Lane has managed to achieve quite a feat.  He had an opinion piece published at World Net Daily, which was so upfront that even the crackpots at WND couldn't take it, so they removed it.  Luckily for us, significant portions of it were saved, thanks to the blogs Dispatches from the Culture Wars and The Immoral Minority.  The mindset that these excerpts reveal is so frightening that I believe that the surviving fragments need to be carefully examined.  Remember that these are the words not of some far out fringe character, but an adviser to at least four of the potential Republican candidates in the 2012 Presidential election.  Well, here is what David had to say:

"Throughout Scripture, the only power that can overcome the seemingly invincible omnipotence of a Babel or a Beast is the power of martyrdom, the power of the witness to King Jesus to the point of loss and death. American Christianity has not done a good job of producing martyrs, and that is because we have done such an outstanding job of nurturing Americanists who regret that they have only one life to give for their country. Americanists cannot break Babelic or bestial power because they cannot distinguish heretical Americanism from Christian orthodoxy. Until we do, America will lurch along the path that leads from Babel to Beast. If America is to be put in its place – put right – Christians must risk martyrdom and force Babel to the crux where it has to decide either to acknowledge Jesus an imperator and the church as God’s imperium or to begin drinking holy blood.”

If that was a lot to absorb, let me hit the main points.  According to this, the opposition to their version of Christianity comes from "a Babel or a Beast" i.e. Satan.  And the only "Christian" remedy to this bestial power is "martyrdom," or "drinking holy blood," i.e. violence against all of their opponents, who are to accept their rule or die.  Christ must be acknowledged as a "imperator."  This is a term derived from a title bestowed on Roman emperors, and denotes to these people a worldly ruler- in other words, our country must be run as a religious dictatorship, with all things ruled by their interpretation of the Bible.

"Where are the champions of Christ to save the nation from the pagan onslaught imposing homosexual marriage, homosexual scouts, 60 million babies done to death by abortion and red ink as far as the eye can see on America? Who will wage war for the Soul of America and trust the living God to deliver the pagan gods into our hands and restore America to her Judeo-Christian heritage and re-establish a Christian culture?"

You see, liberals are not people who differ in opinion from them; they are bestial tools of a pagan God, who must be destroyed.

"As to the future of America – and the collapse of this once-Christian nation...Christians must be retrained to war for the Soul of America and quit believing the fabricated whopper of the “Separation of Church and State,” the lie repeated ad nauseum by the left and liberals to keep Christian America – the moral majority – from imposing moral government on pagan public schools, pagan higher learning and pagan media.  Bill Bennett’s insight, “… the two essential questions Plato posed as: Who teaches the children, and what do we teach them?” requires deep thought, soul-searching and a response from Christian America to the secular, politically correct and multicultural false gods imposing their religion on America’s children."

Again, notice that this is cast as a cosmic battle between good and evil, in which these intolerant bigots have claimed the role of the godly, and in which all who disagree with them are worshipers of "false gods," who must be eliminated.

"You ask, “What is our goal?” To wage war to restore America to our Judeo-Christian heritage with all of our might and strength that God will give us. You ask, “What is our aim?” One word only: victory, in spite of all intimidation and terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, America will ultimately collapse."

"Let me be clear. The currency used by the present generation of Christian “inside the Beltway” D.C. leaders – press conferences, press releases and getting a shout-out on the evening news – is no longer viable; political action by spiritual political operatives and candidates is required. The old model used by the policy boys – seemingly sane and skillful a generation or two ago – has taken us over the cliff. Christian America is in ruins... Christian America must war to make our nation a better place for our kids and grandkids."

Theocratic war.  And as you can see from the above, they do not mean a war of words, they mean violent murder and destruction to force their evil will on the vast majority of us.

Do I even need to point out that this is exactly the agenda of Al Qaida and the Taliban?  And this sick, violent, hate-filled so-called religion has now reached the point where its proponents are advising several Republican Presidential candidates.

I have insisted for years that this is the end goal of the Republican party:  Theocratic terrorism to control the people of the United States, while the hyper rich are free to plunder the country until it is sucked dry.  I have also pointed out that this is the traditional track of terrorism:  incitement by those who would never dirty their hands with action, but which inevitably induces unstable and alienated people to carry out the violent destruction which they crave, which lies behind so much of their "religious" fervor.

I have watched as this sickening perversion of religion and decency has grown from a minuscule number of fools in this country, to a major influence on one of our two political parties.  And I warn you now: look closely at Syria, at Pakistan, at Iran, because if these people are not stopped, that is the world your children will live in.

God in Heaven Above, Is the News Boring Lately

Sorry for the lack of posts, but what the hell is there to talk about?  Some guy revealing what anyone with half a brain already knew?  Republicans trying to press Obama to do something- anything- in Syria, where both sides are the bad guys, so that they can blame Obama for whatever happens?  More vicious anti-woman legislation around the country from the same Republicans?  What is there the least bit interesting in any of this?  Even the right wingers I cover are just listless and stupid these days.

Oh well, I'll have something to say when I think it won't bore people half to death.

Corroboration:  This little quote this evening from Hunter at Daily Kos:

"it's been a fairly dismal week, and I don't want to talk about politics anymore."

Amen, brother.

Edward Snowden and the Death Agony of the Mainstream Media

Of all the stories to have consumed the attention of the mainstream press, this one, of a guy revealing what we should have known all along, that the government apparently has the same access to information about who we contact, what websites we visit, that is enjoyed without complaint by businesses around the world, is a strange one.  And the vituperative attacks against this one guy (in preference to dealing with the real issues) are, to say the least, out of proportion to the crime.  Why?  What has led the media all across the political spectrum to coalesce in this onslaught?

I think that, to understand this, we have to go back in time, to the days of the sainted Ronnie Reagan and his great project, deregulation-in this case, deregulation of the press.  Before Reagan, over three quarters of media outlets were owned by families or small corporations.  After Reagan's "reforms" had run their course, over 80% of the media ended up in the hands of major corporations.  Add to this Newt Gingrich's opening up of the broadcast media to foreign ownership, in return for a $4 million dollar bribe book advance from Rupert Murdoch, and you end up with media which recognize no journalistic responsibilities, but exist like all large corporations solely to enrich their owners.

This corporate domination of our media, turning news sources into more or less blatant propaganda channels, was not achieved easily, nor without great expenditure designed to keep the right sort of people running the country.

Unfortunately, as has so often happened in history, the unexpected intervened; in this case the internet.  As the years have gone by, more and more people, disgusted with what passes for news in the corporate controlled media, have gone online to get their information.  Now, needless to say to any reader of Wingnut Wrapup here at Green Eagle, much of this "information" is even worse than what you get at CNN or Fox News.  But that doesn't make any difference to the current owners of the mainstream media.  A reader or watcher lost is a blow to them, wherever that reader has turned for their information.

And here is what has the mainstream media so enraged about Edward Snowden. As far as they are concerned, it is their right to state what is news and what isn't- it is their right to set the national agenda. They paid massively for this privilege and they are going to protect it from any outsider like Mr. Snowden, who dares to interfere with their decisions about what will be on the national agenda. They feel their control of information- their only stock in trade, really- slipping out of their grasp, and with it, their consumers;  and it is here that they are taking their stand.

A particularly sad instance of this is the curious case of Glenn Greenwald.  Formerly a highly respected internet writer, Greenwald recently departed to work for a print publication- the Guardian.  Thus, he made the massive mistake of not only changing horses in midstream, but of changing from the winning horse to the losing horse.  He has now made a spectacle of himself defending control of information, and I doubt that he will ever recover from this disgrace, any more than Judith Miller ever recovered from hers..

Anyway, here's the story.  The mainstream press sold itself to big business over the last few decades.  Like that other great national institution that did the same, the Republican party, they sealed their doom in the process.  Now, they are reduced to the same fate as the Republicans: selling deceit, rigging the game, trying to bully the public into letting them continue to run things.  It isn't working out so well for the Republicans, and it won't work out so well for them either.  And the more they continue with their present attitude that no one but themselves has a right to say what is news and what isn't, the sooner that day will come.

If you want to know where all of this ends, I think you can look at the record companies- if you can find them any more.  Here's the new boss, and he's not the same as the old boss.

Some More Really Bad Climate News

This long story from Daily Kos is something that you should really take a look at.  Here is but one of quite a number of illustrations from it:

Try to make it through as much as you can- I guarantee that you will not regret it.  This is the sort of approaching catastrophe that should have all of us fixated on dealing with it, but of course we are much too busy worrying about the endless nonexistent scandals that the Republicans cook up.

Not much else to say, really.  We are allowing multinational corporations and their press to destroy us while they keep most people preoccupied with things that mean nothing.

And I mean you too, Glenn Greenwald.  Joining the Conservatives in calling the Obama administration a bunch of out of control would be dictators only furthers the right wing goal of seeing to it that nothing interrupts the plundering of our economy by really evil people.  Meanwhile, we creep closer and closer to global disaster, whipped up into a panic about whether the Federal Government knows that we reserved Stones tickets on line.

It's So Inevitable

That this would be the Republican response:

"Tea party-backed Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) is urging Americans to be "skeptical" of income taxes, the estate tax and President Barack Obama's health care reform law because of last year's terrorist attack in Benghazi and a National Security Agency (NSA) program that collects millions of phone records each day"

As I have pointed out so many times, the Republican party is nothing but a corrupt tool of the hyper-rich.  Its members do not give a damn what happens to this country, as long as the interests of the rich around the world (whether American citizens or not) are served.  The proof, as we have seen again and again, is no matter what happens, their answer is always the same thing: more money for rich people.

Yet, our so-called mainstream press goes on, decade after decade, ignoring what is right in front of their faces, even when these people inevitably do more damage to us than Al Qaida could ever dream of doing.

And anyone who is willing to speak the truth, even an unimpeachable source like Nobel Prize winning Princeton economics professor Paul Krugman, is derided as an out of control partisan lunatic- if they are ever allowed to speak out in public at all.

Wingnut Wrapup

A special tip of the hat to Oklahoma freshman Congressman Jim Bridenstine, who, having served a grand total of five months in Congress, feels entitled to speak as follows, as reported on the right:

"This is what real leadership looks like!! If the GOP wants America’s support again they need to begin speaking up like this freshman congressman from Oklahoma. Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.) spoke on the House Floor yesterday and gave his review of President Obama.

Bridenstine ended by saying, “The president’s dishonesty, incompetence, vengefulness and lack of moral compass lead many to suggest that he is not fit to lead.”

He added, “The only problem is that his vice president is equally unfit and even more embarrassing.”

This, from people who are positive that the least criticism of themselves is a blatant act of treason.  I can't wait to hear more from this scum, who is apparently already positioning himself to duke it out with Louie Gohmert for the title of stupidest hater in Congress.

And I love the notion that this is what real leadership looks like- Taking difficult stands?  Putting together coalitions to pass needed legislation?  Standing up to people who are powerful, but patently wrong? Finding creative ways to address our nation's problems?  No, it consists in lying and smearing people on the floor of Congress.  That's as close to "leadership" as Republicans are capable of getting these days.  And I think we all know where this sort of thing is leading us.

Now, on we go...

The spirit of justice:  Darrell Issa on his investigative strategy:  "As the investigator, I know where I want to get, now I'm just getting around to proving it."

This man was picked by his fellow House Republicans to be in charge of "government oversight."

Matt Barbour, Town Hall:  "Easy Fix to IRS Corruption... It’s time for a new federal “Taxpayer Bill of Rights.”  Such a bill, notes Phillips, “would codify as federal law that no IRS audit  of a person, organization or business could be conducted without first having the IRS agent to prepare an affidavit that is sworn to in front of a federal judge, federal magistrate or a tax court judge that states with specificity why there is probable cause to believe the audit will result in either the discovery of criminal activities or the discovery of civil wrong doing. It will be the functional equivalent of a search warrant.”

Or the functional equivalent of a guarantee to rich people that they can do anything they want with their money, and the country be damned.  Which do you think Matt is more interested in?

Pat Buchanan, Human Events:  "Abolish Corporate Income Tax...Since the U.S. corporate income tax now produces less than 10 percent of federal revenue and less than 2 percent of gross domestic product, abolish it. Get rid of it.

Think of it. A continent-wide nation that doesn’t tax business."

Yeah, think of it!  And then, think of a nation that doesn't tax rich people at all!  Because that's where we are heading with thinking like Pat's.  And other than causing a depression every so often, hey, what's the problem?

Didn't you just know that in the end, all of the phony Republican scandal mongering about the IRS was going to come down to cutting taxes on the rich?  It's their solution for everything.  Always has been, always will be.  It's all they really care about.

Roger Kimball, PJ Media:  "Obama Is Not Nixon-Nixon, whatever his flaws, was a great president."

Ha ha.  What planet do these people live on, anyway?  Well, at least chalk up all the right wing stories these days about Nixon as a victory of sorts-  Reagan and Bush have become so toxic, even with the notoriously short memoried American public, that they have to go back to Nixon to claim to have found a Republican President to admire.  Nixon!  Man, that's just pathetic.

Brad Preston, PJ Media:  "Professor: What America Really Needs Now Is a Violent Civil War to Kill Off the NRA"

Well, luckily for him, that is just what the NRA is working to achieve.

And here come our typical collection of ravings from the Dumbest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "AWFUL! Plouffe Caught in More Lies – Called Issa an Arsonist Car Thief...Issa has never been found guilty of wrongdoing at any point during his career.

Unlike Barack Obama, who has been found guilty many times of being a drug addled, homosexual Marxist Muslim foreign born saboteur planted here to destroy the country.  Oh wait, he wasn't found guilty of any of those things, which Jim and so many others on the right accuse him of every single day?  Well, I'm sure that Jim is going to be apologizing to Barack any day now.  I'm holding my breath...oops, I turned blue and passed out.  Well, enough of that.

And in case you've forgotten, Issa escaped conviction on the car theft charges by blaming it all on his brother. Another example of the vaunted leadership Republicans hold in such high esteem.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "John Kerry Praises New UN Gun Treaty – Could Lead to National Registry"

Yeah, and it could lead to an attack by monkey people from Mars too.  In fact, since the language of the UN gun treaty specifically excludes the imposition of gun registries, and does not exclude monkey attacks from Mars, which the drafters of the treaty mysteriously failed to consider,  I would say that monkey attacks from Mars are even more likely than a gun registry if this treaty is approved.  Undoubtedly the work of George Soros, who probably is a monkey person from Mars.

And Another Scandal Going Nowhere:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Government Gone Wild… Former EPA Administrator Awarded Family Dog With Training Certificates"

The horror!  She gave her dog a certificate!  It declared him to be a “scholar of ethical behavior!"  More hearings, right now! And forever!!!  This is the one that is going to bring down Obama!

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Al-Qaeda Chief Warns of More Bomb Attacks in America Like the Boston Marathon Bombings"

An Al-Qaida "chief" none of us has ever heard of!  And he held a press conference!  Start urinating in your pants, Republicans; this is so scary!!!

World Net Daily:  "Slouching toward a military junta...Exclusive: Joseph Farah warns of growing federal influence over local law enforcement"

Oh my God, Republicans, what are you going to do to protect yourselves now, since you already involuntarily evacuated your bladders over the last story?  Wait- don't answer that.  I don't want to know.  Just do it on your own couch, not mine.

World Net Daily:  "'Big mistake' for Israel to downplay missiles to Syria"

This from John Bolton, who has been catastrophically wrong about every single foreign policy issue since he first started opening his big mouth about a thousand years ago.  Much better, in Bolton's opinion, to start a bloody, unwinnable war, while he sits here, ten thousand miles away, in perfect safety.
Really, does this guy have a clue how stupid he looks?

And while we are on the subject, may I remind you that this quintessential warmonger evaded service of his own during Vietnam, saying:  "I confess I had no desire to die in a Southeast Asian rice paddy."  One more in the Republican party's infinite supply of armchair John Waynes, trying to pay off their own cowardice in other people's blood.

World Net Daily:  "Christian exodus from Boy Scouts begins"

And Oh my God, here's a pathetic attempt to explain away the Republicans' utter failure to find a thing Obama actually did that was wrong, after years of searching for scandals:

Herbert E. Meyer, American Thinker:  "The Smoking Gun in Plain Sight...As the Obama administration descends into a whirlpool of scandals, a race has begun among Congressional committees and news organizations to find the proverbial smoking gun...Study history, and you will understand why no such document is ever likely to be found: That just isn't how these things work.  Very few people are aware of this, but there is no document -- not one -- linking Adolf Hitler to the Holocaust."

Yes, just because Republicans can't produce one shred of real evidence for the literally hundreds of smears that they have launched toward Obama, well, that means nothing!  Because, Hitler!  Hitler!!!  Hitler wouldn't admit that he had committed any crimes either!!!  So, Obama is guilty of everything!

Herbert continues (after a lot of idiotic maundering which I will not force down your throats):

"This is the United States in 2013, not Germany in 1933, and there's no real possibility that President Obama will get away with his attempted coup d'etat."

Of course, there is no question that he is actually attempting one.  Needless to say, he isn't, but that's just a minor detail, I guess.

Noah Beck, American Thinker:  "Why Iranian Elections Won't Matter this Time...Thanks to Obama"

God, everything is his fault.  What, did he trick the Iranians into nominating Romney too?

James Lewis, American Thinker:  "Like Watergate, Benghazi has several layers. But the most revealing one is the active collusion between this administration and Al Qaida."

Yes, you read that right- the Obama administration is colluding with Al Qaida to destroy Western civilization.  It's okay for Republicans to say things like that, but listen to the screams of bloody murder when someone suggests that Karl Rove perjured himself when he claimed to be running a social welfare organization, to avoid paying taxes.

James continues:

"Obama only bows down to Third World reactionaries.  That is consistent with his extreme leftist ideology."

Does this jackass have any knowledge of the fact that reactionaries are the exact opposite of leftists, and are the prime target of "leftist ideology?"  Well, yeah, of course he knows that.  He doesn't care.  He's just putting together a bunch of scary words to frighten the rubes out of more of their money, and so far, it's worked out pretty well.

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Issa claims tea party targeting probably directed from Washington...Why wasn't this info in the IG report?"

Well, maybe because there isn't a shred of evidence to back up this manufactured lie.  Do you think that might be the reason?  Nah, it must be some sort of Communist conspiracy.

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "IRS spent $50 million on conferences over the last two years...You don't have to try very hard to connect the two scandals."

No, not when you've had so much practice connecting Communists and Muslims, and convincing yourself that global warming is some sort of conspiracy involving ten thousand scientists, and that Obama's coming to take your guns any day now.  You don't have to try very hard when the only thing necessary to convince you of anything is that it provides an opportunity to vent your hatred in public.

John Hawkins, Town Hall:  "5 Lies the Democrats Told To Sell Obamacare"

Let's have some fun and see if we can guess what the Democrats' lies are are without even reading the article.  Here's my guess:

1. People actually like having health care.  Nonsense.  Because, FREEDOM!
2.  It's better to be healthy than to be sick.  Only if you are rich.  If you are poor, it's better to be sick, so you can just lay around on your butt all day, enjoying the luxuries you can buy on food stamps.
3.  Poor people feel just as bad when they get sick as rich people.  Poor people don't have very well developed feelings- more like slugs and cockroaches than real Americans.
4.  Caring about how other people feel is American.  In fact, caring about other people is Communism, as any good wingnut knows.
5.  People have rights too, not just corporations.  Not while Republicans control the courts, buddy.

There, how do you think I did?

Mona Charen, Town Hall:  "How Obama Gets Us to Forget His Failure in Afghanistan...In the course of his rambling monologue on national security policy delivered at the National Defense University, President Obama gave only glancing attention to the most significant military undertaking of his term in office -- the Afghanistan war."

"Tthe most significant military undertaking of his term in office -- the Afghanistan war." The Afghanistan war is Obama's undertaking.  The audacity is stunning.  I guess these people have really forgotten about their own President, just a few years ago.  There really is no lie so big or so obvious that Republicans won't fall for it.

Charles Payne, Town Hall:  "In Real Life Tortoises Sleep and Eat All Day"

Really, Charles?  Man, that's interesting.  What a life.  Sounds great to me.  Well, thanks for the information.

Now, the dumbest bit of projection I've ever heard:

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "The Left's New Scandal Strategy: Attack, Attack, Attack"

The left?  That's the left's new strategy?  While the right is acting so reasonable and friendly and all?  Man, Guy, can't you come up with better lies than that in exchange for the wingnut welfare that pays your bills?

And another chapter of Scandals Going Nowhere:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "BUSTED: Top IRS Commissioner Played Dr. Spock in IRS Star Trek Video...IRS Small Business & Self-Employed Division Commissioner Faris Fink admitted today at the House Oversight Committee Hearing that he indeed starred in the IRS Star Trek video as Dr. Spock."

And here he is- not too bad for government work

The horror!  A government employee dressed up like Spock!  How will our FREEDOM ever survive?  And while we are on the subject, that's MR. Spock, not DOCTOR Spock, you brain dead idiot.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Franklin Graham: I Wrote Obama About Being Targeted By IRS – But Never Heard Back From Him "

Unlike your father, who got to sit around the Oval Office with Nixon, swapping antisemitic stories.  You must feel so neglected, Franklin.  Why not go to your room and have a good cry?

Joseph Farah, World Net Daily:  "Seminal moment: Obama loses N.Y. Times"

Maybe he left it on the bus.  Oh well, another one tomorrow.

Star Parker, World Net Daily:  "End Social Security and start over... Time to change system 'into a real retirement investment program'

You mean it's time that people just forget about what would have happened the last time you guys tried to ram this idea down our throats?  Actually, Star didn't quite spell out the whole idea.  It's "End Social Security, steal all the money, and then start over...suckers."

World Net Daily:  "N.Y. Times tweaks damning editorial"

The horror!  The editors of the New York Times edited their editorial!  How dare editors edit their editorials?  Editing isn't their job, no! Don't they understand that real journalists just think of any lie they can imagine and keep repeating it until doomsday?

Which it already is, at least for this edition of Wingnut Wrapup.

Oh, the Outrage

And so the indignity swells, from every part of the ideological spectrum, that the government seems to have found out who we all called.  Of course, let's get this one thing out of the way first: these practices and worse were instituted under the Bush Administration, and never did a single Republican complain.  So, we know how seriously to take their whining (as if we didn't already.)  But this time they have been joined in the festival of outrage by tons of Democrats, and formerly respectable writers like Glenn Greenwald.

Hey, I'm not happy about people knowing who I got calls from (mostly my wife and the dentist- I hope they get some really good national security information from that.)  But as far as I am concerned, this issue is way down on the list of things I am outraged about.  I wonder why (and I really do- this is not sarcasm) all of the people on our side who are so up in arms about this, are not more concerned about things like this:

An administration that started an illegal war of aggression, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people and costing us two trillion dollars, and committing war crimes of torture and imprisonment without cause in the process;

An administration that actively aided Wall Street traders in an orgy of greed that destroyed our economy; and

An administration that saw to it that not one single person was held responsible for either of these monstrous crimes;

A political party (one of only two that we have) that, between its pandering to a massive group of deranged, hate-filled, ignorant voters that it created itself, and its pandering to the hyper-rich, has turned itself into a subversive organization which is destroying the nation's ability to function; and

An administration that refuses to even call them out on their sedition, let alone do anything about it

A government that favors the enrichment of literally a few thousand families over the welfare of the rest of us

Supposed representatives of the people that are constantly trying to force the country into insane foreign warfare...

Well, I could go on and on, but I think this current outrage about the government checking who we called, as unacceptable as it may be, is far, far down the list of unaddressed threats facing this country.  It has never been demonstrated that the current phone number controversy has harmed a single person- the crimes listed above have killed hundreds of thousands and diminished the prosperity of hundreds of millions.  Yet the government and the press seem to have determined to just let them vanish into the dustbin of history while they obsess over nothing; which is to say they are collaborating in their determination to only serve the rich in this world, while providing the rest of us with nothing but meaningless distractions while we see our lives wasting away.

See: Sanity Works

This news today:

"North Korea proposed on Thursday, 6 June, to hold talks with South Korea on reopening the Kaesong Industrial Zone (KIZ) just north of the Demilitarized Zone and on restoring almost all civilian connections with South Korea that it severed in March and April."

Obama's policy of just keeping quiet has allowed Kim Jong Un to back off from his ridiculous confrontational stances of a few months ago, and return to what passes for normal in Korea.

If a Republican had been President, the U.S. government would have resorted to an endless series of belligerent statements and actions which would have guaranteed that the Korean situation would only get worse.

I think it is pretty clear now, as I said at the time, that Kim's hostility was intended for domestic consumption, to consolidate his position as head of the country.  Of course, if we had responded in the Republican way, we could have easily turned this into a horrible international incident.

Not much more to say about this diplomatic victory for Obama, really, except that the mainstream press will ignore it, and the usual wingnuts will rip Obama for being a weakling, even though he has done all the U.S. could hope to do to let the Korean situation unwind without further damage.

Laughable Right Wing Threat of the Day

As reported at Little Green Footballs:

"Rural Colorado county commissioners are pursuing a plan to splinter from the state and create a new one in the aftermath of a legislative session they say runs counter to their way of life."

Someone needs to explain to these jackasses that the rest of us don't care if they splinter from the entire earth (which they have largely done already, anyway) but that doesn't give them the right to declare that they are a new State.  The rest of us get a voice on that one.  After all, if it's that easy, Green Eagle is splitting off from his State and declaring his own residence to be a new State.  We're then going to send Green Eagle's two sons to Washington as our new Senators.  Finally, a way to get them out of the house for six years.

We Can't Make Anything?

I provide the following evidence that, when Americans set their minds to it, they can consistently, over a long period of time, manufacture products whose quality crushes the output of the entire rest of the world:

I rest my case.

Heard the term "grand bargain" much lately?  Me either, thank God.

Checking In On The Campbells

Remember the Campbell family from New Jersey?  Papa, Mama, and little Adolf Hitler Campbell,  JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and their two younger siblings?

Well, Papa Heath Campbell has gone to court to get custody of little Adolf Hitler et. al. returned to him because, why, how could anyone question his fitness as a father.  And here he is, showing up at court for the hearing, resplendently attired in a Nazi uniform:

Man, he even grew a Hitler mustache.  What a sick idiot.

"Let me prove to the world that I am a good father," he said.

"I've never abused my children, I only name my children...Basically, what they're saying is because of my beliefs and I'm a Nazi, that us people don't have any constitutional rights to fight for our children."

No, Heath, we're not questioning your right to try to get your kids back.  What we are questioning is whether there is a judge in the country crazy enough to think you ought to have them.

The Real IRS Scandal, for the millionth time...

Why is it necessary to repeat the most obvious truths over and over again, only to have them ignored, while right wing lies, such as the totally discredited claim that the IRS "targeted conservatives" are kept alive endlessly by the press?

The real scandal of this whole affair is that the IRS will not stand up to endless, flagrant abuses of its 501(C)3 laws, resulting in the most blatantly political organizations, like Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS and all of the hundreds of Tea Party groups feeling free to laughingly call themselves "social welfare" groups, which is what 501(C)3 organizations are supposed to be, thus committing perjury and forcing all of the rest of us to pay for their destruction of American democracy all at the same time.

One thing that I've noticed over the years is that Republicans rarely engage in one of their patented screaming sessions for only one reason.  They are very efficient in this.  In this case, not only are they smearing the Obama administration by telling patent lies about it over and over again, but they are putting on a demonstration of the sort of vicious abuse that lies in wait for anyone who tries to stop them from breaking the law in order to advance their agenda.

This has been an amazingly successful strategy of theirs, born, I think, out of their determination after Nixon's fall that no Republican ever again would be held accountable for their behavior.

Here is what we have had since:

The successful blaming of Jimmy Carter for the out of control inflation that started under the Nixon/Ford administration, contributing strongly to the great lie that Democrats are the ones who cannot control the economy responsibly- a claim so patently out of joint with history as to be one of the biggest jokes of the last century, but one which Republicans have convinced a large part of our mainstream press to repeat over and over again, even with the consequences of the recent Bush administration's behavior to prove them disastrously wrong.

The utter ignoring of the "October surprise," in which Republicans sabotaged negotiations to free American hostages, in an act of actual, real treason- giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

The further likely sabotage of the Iran Hostage rescue attempt by Oliver North, again a blatant act of treason, which resulted in North being declared a hero by the right, and which helped put Reagan in the Oval Office.

The Iran Contra affair, in which Reagan illegally sold two thousand missiles to the Iranian Mullahs, once more an open act of treason, and which then stole the money to illegally fund an attempt to overthrow a legally elected government, by a pack of drug dealing right wing terrorists, who the American people were ludicrously told were the good guys.

The packing of Cabinet posts with people committed to frustrating the enforcement of the laws they were picked to enforce- people like industry stooge James Watt at the interior department,  or the vicious and stupid Clarence Thomas as head of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

All of this and far more (forgive me- I'm writing a blog post here, not an encyclopedia) went ignored as Reagan was hailed far and wide as the greatest President ever.  And anyone who questioned that insane claim was tarred as a vicious partisan traitor.

Next, of course, the tables turned, and we had the spectacle of the Clinton administration, in which a fine President who kept us out of foreign entanglements while balancing the budget and presiding over a time of rapid economic growth, was subject to a constant stream of lying Republican smears designed to prevent him from doing his job:  Tens of millions spent on the so-called Whitewater scandal, which proved to be about nothing; the idiotic claim that he had his very popular treasury secretary murdered, the claim that his wife had one of her assistants killed, for no discernible motive, the claim that Clinton, while in the White House was carrying out a drug smuggling operation for his personal profit, the claim that Clinton was a serial rapist, over fifty other murders allegedly caused by Clinton, and finally, the Monica Lewinski farce- the greatest abuse of Congressional power in the history of the United States- in which the claim was made that Clinton's attempts to get Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaida were nothing but an attempt to distract attention from the Monica "scandal," which was held to be obvious, because in Republicans' minds, Al Qaida was not a threat to the United States.

Next, Bush (sigh.)  His placement in office after losing the election was an act of Supreme Court corruption, pure and simple- the worst criminal act in the history of the United States judiciary.  Penalty to the criminals involved- nothing.

Bush went on to start a war of aggression without any cause- an act exactly analogous to Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia.  This was a monstrous war crime for which he should have at least spent the rest of his life in prison- penalty nothing, because every time someone brought it up, the Republican screaming machine drowned them out.  Bush went on to plunder the economy on behalf of the rich, knowingly causing, "with malice aforethought," as it were, a depression whose depth was only limited by Democratic intervention. And let's not even talk about the concentration camps and torture.  Penalty for all of this: an "honorable" retirement eased by his ill-gotten riches earned by having betraying the American people over and over again.

And finally, Obama- a perfectly competent, if rather politically naive, President, who, from the moment he emerged on the national scene, has been subject to an endless stream of vicious, lying attacks, all with the intent of disgracing him and forcing his removal from office, and all of them accepted as legitimate critiques by the mainstream press.  Once again, no Republican is ever held to account for any of these monstrous betrayals of the nation, guaranteeing that their behavior will continue again and again forever.

And this is the path that the viciousness of the Republican party and the weakness of the Democrats have chosen for us:  Whenever we have a Republican President, we are going to have a lawless tyranny doing everything to destroy our right to share in the abundance that should be ours, and whenever we have a Democratic President, we are going to be force-fed endless lying scandals aimed at impeachment.  This is no way to run a country; in fact it is a perfect way to ruin a country.  And unless something is done about it, the United States is on the fast road to oblivion.

Well, look on the bright side.  At this point maybe there's not enough to be worth saving.
