A Truth About Susan Collins

Because apparently not one single person on either side of the political divide is willing to speak the truth:

Yes, Trump and McConnell are letting Susan Collins and probably one other Republican Senator vote to hear witnesses.  This is not, as everyone claims, to help them get re-elected in relatively moderate districts.  Real (i.e. crooked) Republicans don't give a damn about Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski or any other potential defector; if one does cross the party, they will be primaried by someone much more extreme than they are, and the result will just be an even more united Republican party.

What is actually going on here is a plan to see to it that the Democrats can't portray this as a party line vote, because two unneccessary Republicans were let to agree to witnesses.

It is all about the 2020 election, despite the fact that it will be consistently presented across the mainstream media exactly the way the Republicans want it- See, there are still Republican moderates, the Republican party is not 100% made up of fascist-enabling criminals, so it is perfectly respectable to go out in November and vote for them.

And the press will go to their graves pretending that this is an even-handed way to report on this issue.

And Thar She Blows!

This news reaches us today from our nation's Southern Border:

"A section of Donald Trump’s much-vaunted border wall between the United States and Mexico has blown over onto the Mexican side in high winds, US border patrol officers have been reported as saying.

The steel panels, more than 30ft (nine metres) high, began to lean at a sharp angle on the border between the Californian town of Calexico and Mexicali in Mexico amid gusts on Wednesday...“Luckily, Mexican authorities responded quickly and were able to divert traffic from the nearby street,” said border patrol agent Carlos Pitones, according to the Los Angeles Times."

Luckily, Mexican authorities managed to divert traffic!  Good thing that responsibility didn't fall on US authorities, because they would have screwed that up too.  And here it is!
This is the sort of thing that people are talking about when they say that Trump is killing satire.  It'd be a good laugh if he weren't killing democracy at the same time.

From the Washington Post this afternooon:

"Trump’s border wall, vulnerable to flash floods, needs large storm gates left open for months...President Trump's border wall probably will require the installation of hundreds of storm gates to prevent flash floods from undermining or knocking it over, gates that must be left open for months every summer during "monsoon season" in the desert, according to U.S. border officials, agents and engineers familiar with the plans.
The open, unmanned gates in remote areas already have allowed for the easy entry of smugglers and migrants into the United States."

Oh sweet lord, how could we have expected anything else from the greatest fuckup ever to enter the White House, let alone live there?  This is, remember, the World's Greatest Construction Expert.

"Villareal and other Border Patrol officials said the storm gates, and their need to be left open all summer, amount to a relatively minor challenge"

A relatively minor challenge- hundreds of holes in the wall that anyone can come through.  How can our country have fallen into the hands of such an idiot?

Well, I Guess That Settles That

I learn from an article at the Washington Post today, the following useful information:

"Trump’s impeachment team argues that anything he does to win reelection isn’t impeachable...Over the course of two responses to those questions, Trump’s legal team made a remarkable claim. First, that if an action includes any element of public interest, it can’t be impeachable under the terms set by the House. And, second, if Trump thinks that his own reelection is in the public interest — which he certainly does — that’s a valid claim."

Well, that certainly sets things straight.  So, if Trump thinks it's a good idea for him to remain in office, what with being the greatest genius in history and knowing more about everything than anybody, he can just murder his Democratic opponents one after the other, as they move to the front in the polls, and that would be way outside of what the founding fathers were thinking about when they added the clause about impeachment to the Constitution.

I'll just add that when some of us crazy left wing hippies have made references to Hitler and Stalin, this is the sort of thing we were referring to.  I think it' best that we put a stop to this right now, before he gives it a try, because if you think something like this is beneath him, you are an idiot.

Can I?

The Republican Attack Machine Moves Into Action

Occasionally, I will recommend an article without having a great deal to say about it, because I think it makes its case so well, that there is not much I can add.  Well, here is one, by Isaac Stanley Baker, at the Washington Post.

It tells the story of the stunningly, frighteningly, fast work with which the Republican party has mobilized a masssive character assassination campaign of John Bolton, who for years was a favorite right wing figure, but now must be destroyed for daring to stand up to their golden idol, Donald Trump.

Really, this is the kind of malignant hatred that we are up against today, as horrible to see it in action.  Give the article a read.

Ha Ha Ha Ha

One of the right wing's all time favorite warmongers, John Bolton, now says that Trump told him directly that the withholding of Ukraine aid was absolutely about hurting Joe Biden and the Democrats, utterly destroying Trump's defense.

If Bolton is allowed to testify.

So now we are going to see the Senate Republicans agree to gratefully hear what Bolton has to say, or at least four of them will, which is all we need.

Ha ha ha, Democrats, fooled you again.

They Learned Their Lesson

I've said this before, but I think it needs to be repeated at this point.  The Republican party learned the only lesson they were ever going to learn from Nixon, but they definitely learned that one.  It only took a handful of Republicans in Congress who were halfway honest to drive Nixon from the White House, and the Republicans sure made sure that that never happened again.

As the years went by, and we saw one Republican after another destroyed by horrible skeletons in their closets, my wife used to say that they didn't let anyone run as a Republican unless they were corrupt or criminal enough that they could be destroyed at any time, if they bucked the party.  What at one point seemed like a joke has come to appear more and more like reality as time has gone by.  And here we are- A President of massive criminality, whose treason is clear for all to see, and yet still it is unlikely in the extreme that the Republican party will do a thing about it.

Oh yeah, I expect that, by prearrangement, the Republicans will have one or two of their Senators vote for impeachment, just so the Democrats can't say that it was a party line vote, but the fix is in.  When you start looking for when the Republican party started its descent into open criminality, you have to look farther back than Trump, or Bush or Reagan.  It started in earnest way back there in the sixties, and it has taken them a half century to build a base that is vicious and brain dead enough, and a leadership that is criminal enough to deliberately destroy this country.

The Pleasures of Being in Hawaii

Today's Republican impeachment presentation was over before I got out of bed.  Thank the lord for small things.

Bernie Reverting to Type?

I don't want to make too much of a point of this at present, but am I totally off base in seeing signs that Bernie is starting to act the same way he did in 2016, when he saw the Democratic nomination slipping away from him, reverting to angry and unfair attacks on his opponents that, last time around, proved horribly destructive to the Democrats and the country?  As a former strong Bernie supporter, I more or less gave him a pass on his role in the "Bernie brother" phenomenon, but as George W. Bush once so succinctly put it, "Won't get fooled again."  A couple more incidents like we have recently seen and he is off my bus forever.  It may be that, despite my agreeing with almost all of his positions, he just doesn't have the character to be President.

Best to not just forget about what is happening there.  From the Washington Post, the following:
Our nation's gift to the people of Venezuela
"The least noticed but most striking failure of maximum pressure has come in Venezuela, a country just three hours by air from Miami that for decades was deeply dependent on the United States for oil revenue. Trump cut off that income stream, confident it would cause the collapse of a socialist dictatorship already in economic and political free fall.

Instead, a year later, the regime of Nicol├ís Maduro appears to have stabilized. The lights are back on in Caracas, once-empty stores are full of goods, and the U.S.-backed opposition has been ousted — at least physically — from the National Assembly. Trump’s demand — that Maduro leave office and make way for fresh elections — won’t be realized anytime soon."

"Trump cut off that income stream..."  Let us be clear about this: the United States sabotaged the economy of Venezuela, and then blamed the ensuing suffering on the Venezuelan government, and on "socialism" in general.

And this is not the first time this has happened.  The United States engaged in the same economic sabotage when Hugo Chavez was the head of the Venezuelan government, with the same disastrous consequences for the Venezuelan people, and then blamed it all on the Venezuelan people and their government.

Why Venezuela?  Venezuela is a massive producer of oil, and its governments have had the nerve to insist that the profits from their oil benefit their own people, and not just the sociopathic billionaires who control the world's oil business.  That can just not be allowed, any more that the nation of Iran can be allowed to benefit from its oil resources, so an excuse was found to attempt to destroy their economy too.

Best not to be so distracted by the Trump sideshow that we forget what is really going on in the world.

I am making an addition to this post:  Yes, I am suggesting that Trump's hostility to Iran and his rush to damage their economy through unjustified sanctions, has nothing to do with nuclear weapons, but is one more effort by the United States to see to it that nobody but the owners of oil companies benefits from oil profits.  I suspect that this is all this was ever about, and the rest was nothing but a smokescreen.

Dopes and Babies

I know I like to say that I have no interest in commenting on things unless I have something new that I think I can add, which is why, with so many people now finally admitting what we have backed ourselves into by allowing the Republican party to become more and more criminal, that isn't much these days.  Well, there certainly have been a lot of people writing about the new revelations regarding Donald Trump's "dopes and babies" tantrum, that you'd think that the book excerpts containing this sickening episode would be pretty much milked dry, but as usual, Green Eagle still has a few more things to spout off about.

The first one is a comment that has been noticed, but which has not received anywhere near enough attention.  Maybe it's because as I write this, I am living and working only a couple of miles from Pearl Harbor, but this really struck me:

"Trump seemed to know next to nothing about the events of Dec. 7, 1941 when he visited Pearl Harbor in Hawaii for a private tour of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial alongside his former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general.

"Hey, John, what's this all about?" Trump reportedly asked Kelly. "What's this a tour of?"

I cannot find words to describe how grotesque this is. The world's greatest genius, the man who knows more about war than the generals, the man who knows more about everything than anyone, a 72 year old man whose childhood was spent in the shadow of World War II, and he doesn't know what happened at Pearl Harbor?  This is a specimen of virtually unbelievable ignorance and stupidity.  I would not have believed that you could find a single person in his age cohort (which happens to be mine too) that didn't know that.  This fact alone should have been enough to activate the 25th amendment provision for removing a President who is clearly mentally incapable of doing any job, let alone being President of the United States.  But it was covered up, and just ignored, because he signed those tax thefts and appointed those corrupt judges, so who cared?
This is the guy we are talking about, who scared his generals into whimpering obesiance.

Now, on to his infantile tirade against his generals.  And by the way, I have no interest in defending them; they are people who rose through lifetimes of effort to the very top of our government; they should have been perfectly prepared to defend themselves.  Anyway, a few excerpts from Trump's behavior, if you haven't seen them yet:

“We should charge them rent,” Trump said of South Korea. “We should make them pay for our soldiers. We should make money off of everything.”...Trump proceeded to explain that NATO, too, was worthless. U.S. generals were letting the allied member countries get away with murder, he said, and they owed the United States a lot of money after not living up to their promise of paying their dues.  “They’re in arrears,” Trump said, reverting to the language of real estate. He lifted both his arms at his sides in frustration.

Then he scolded top officials for the untold millions of dollars he believed they had let slip through their fingers by allowing allies to avoid their obligations.  “We are owed money you haven’t been collecting!” Trump told them. “You would totally go bankrupt if you had to run your own business.”

Trump questioned why the United States couldn’t get some oil as payment for the troops stationed in the Persian Gulf. “We spent $7 trillion; they’re ripping us off,” Trump boomed. “Where is the f---ing oil?”...“All these countries need to start paying us for the troops we are sending to their countries. We need to be making a profit,” Trump said. “We could turn a profit on this.”

“You’re all losers,” Trump said. “You don’t know how to win anymore.  I wouldn’t go to war with you people,” Trump told the assembled brass.  Addressing the room, the commander in chief barked, “You’re a bunch of dopes and babies.”

Well, a couple of comments about this literally deranged screamfest that I haven't seen anyone make.  First of all, this is the President of the United States, a man who has it in his power to bring war or peace to the world, and when thinking about the military, all he cares about is how he can use it to make money- his sole real obsession in life.  He sees no other purpose for war but as a source of profit.  Again, this malignant attitude alone should have been enough to boot him out of office permanently.  But as we know, it wasn't.

And let me mention two other remarks that reveal a person so totally un-self aware that in itself this should be considered a form of mental illness.  First, this one:

“You would totally go bankrupt if you had to run your own business.”

Uttered by a man who started out rich and went bankrupt six times in his own business, to a group of people, none of which had ever gone bankrupt.  And then there is this one:

"“You don’t know how to win anymore.  I wouldn’t go to war with you people,”

Uttered by someone who wouldn't go to war with anyone, and who got his daddy's doctor to write him a lying letter to accomplish the feat.  These are the remarks of someone who is without question the victim of psychotic delusions, and his own party (which includes the great majority of all those generals) didn't care enough to do a thing about it.  That fact may very likely turn out to be of far more consequence that Trump's behavior itself.

Well, on to my final takeaway from this story.  Here is another excerpt from the new book:

"Tillerson in particular was stunned by Trump’s diatribe and began visibly seething. For too many minutes, others in the room noticed, he had been staring straight, dumbfounded, at Mattis, who was speechless, his head bowed down toward the table. Tillerson thought to himself, “Gosh darn it, Jim, say something. Why aren’t you saying something?”

But, as he would later tell close aides, Tillerson realized in that moment that Mattis was genetically a Marine, unable to talk back to his commander in chief, no matter what nonsense came out of his mouth."
This is the mighty man too.  Aren't you proud of our country?

Now, let me tell you a story, which I got from Professor Richard Evans' writings.  When German generals were debriefed at the end of World War II, it was discovered that every one of them knew before Germany invaded Poland that the war was unwinnable.  They talked among themselves about trying to stop Hitler's madness, but in the end, their lifelong training in the rigid Prussian military system of absolute obedience caused (in their account) every single one of them to be unable to speak out or do a thing, at a point when they could have easily averted what was to follow.  Their "honor," i.e. their bloated egos, were more important to them than the impending deaths of fifty million people.

"The Tank meeting had so thoroughly shocked the conscience of military leaders that they tried to keep it a secret"

Because the appropriate answer to a mortal threat to our country, is to keep it a secret.  Right, that is the correct response; to cover your own ass rather than save the world.

"The Joint Chiefs chairman misleadingly described the meeting, skipping over the fireworks.

“He asked a lot of hard questions, and the one thing he does is question some fundamental assumptions that we make as military leaders — and he will come in and question those,” Dunford told Mitchell on July 22. “It’s a pretty energetic and an interactive dialogue.”

"Energetic and instructive." Not the words that I would use to describe a psychotic breakdown from the most powerful man in the world.  But hey, there was a good chance that no one would ever know, so we could all end up...well, right where we are today, with a mentally ill, stupid, brain damaged lunatic having succeeded in abandoning every constraint in his effort to rule the world literally as a three year old would.

When Will I Admit I Was Wrong?

So the Republicans are shrieking in fury at anyone who suspected that Donald Trump might have been involved in the recent shooting down of a passenger plane leaving Tehran (as opposed, of course, to the one that took place in 1988, which we know was carried out by the United States,) to which I reply as follows:

When the Republicans admit that the Benghazi scandal was a lie

When the Republicans admit that the Hillary e-mail scandal was a lie

When the Republicans admit that Obama, Hillary and the rest of the Democrats are not Satanic pedophiles who kill children for fun

When they admit that the "Uranium one scandal" was another lying smear

When the Republicans admit that they knew all along that Obama is not from Kenya

When they admit that Michelle is not an ex-football player who had a sex change operation

When they admit that they knew that the Swift Boat story about John Kerry was a vicious, lying smear.

When they admit that wanting to help poor people is not Communism, but rather human decency

When they admit that the list of over a hundred people that the Clintons had killed was another Republican lie, as is the list of people that Obama allegedly did.

When they admit that supply side economics was nothing but a lie designed to steal the country's wealth on behalf of rich sociopaths

When the Republicans admit that the Democrats are the ones who always reduce the deficit, and the Republicans always drive it up

When they admit that the mainstream press in this country is not liberal, but operates solely to advance the interests of its rich owners.

When they admit that Obama, Hillary, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and dozens of other Democratic leaders are neither Communists nor tools of Satan

And above all when they admit that they knew all along that Donald Trump was a criminal con man, and he and Mitch McConnell are anti-American tools of the Russians, and they just didn't care,

Then I will consider admitting that I was wrong to suspect  that this violent act which served to harm the two countries which Donald Trump hates more than any other, was not precipitated with his involvement.

Green Eagle Goes Full Conspiracy Nut Again

So, the U.S. and Iran are on the brink of war, and an airliner is shot down leaving Tehran.  Not just any airliner, mind you, but a Ukranian one.  What virtually nonexistent percentage of world airline flights are on Ukranian airplanes leaving Tehran, I wonder.

Well, here is what I think.  I have seen not a single thing, ever, in the news, about Iran and Ukraine being on the outs in any way.  I do know, however, that the government of Ukraine's refusal to collaborate in Donald Trump's criminal scheme to fabricate charges against his number one Democratic opponent has recently reduced him to apoplectic rage.

Say, what about killing two birds with one stone?  Punish Ukraine for standing up to his extortion, and at the same time make Iran look like terrorist maniacs to the world.  A brilliant twofer, and one that would obviously appeal to a thug like Trump. And all at the cost of a mere couple hundred innocent lives.

Well, if motive is an element in any crime. here's a good one.  Call me crazy, but it makes more sense to me than any other explanation I have heard.

What Happened To Our War?

Just Green Eagle's probably stupid opinion, but I think the military guys realized that Trump had failed to gain any support both among our allies, and with the American people.  I am sure that Trump himself, living in his usual fog of megalomaniac delusion is still expecting his popularity rating to go up to 90% like it did for that idiot George W. Bush, but the truth is that nobody here or abroad, except for his usual brain dead supporters, believes a thing he says.  They will just ignore him about most of it, but not when it comes to war.  So the generals took it into their own hands to essentially cut a deal which allowed Iran to make a largely symbolic response to Trump's war crimes, and move on.

And thus, with a little bit of luck, Trump's main strategy to avoid any penalty for his criminality and win the next election, namely starting a war, has dissolved in the mist.  Too bad, Donny.

On a Pathway

In connection with the "imminent threat" posed by leaving an Iranian general alive, we have the following remark this morning, from Mike Pompeo, about Trump's destruction of the Iran nuclear deal:

“(Iran was) on a pathway that had been provided by the nuclear deal, that clearly gave them the opportunity to have those nuclear weapons.”

Translation into the English language:  "We don't have a single shred of evidence that Iran was doing a thing to violate the treaty, so we are going to just lie about it."

If this world escapes a war (and it is preposterous to have to say this) it is because the leaders of Iran act rationally, not the leaders of our own country.

Days in Advance

This news from Daily Kos this morning:

"Soleimani assassination was planned for days, but Congress was not briefed before or after...The operation to strike and kill Soleimani was planned days in advance."

And coverage in a similar tone from the normally perceptive Talking Points Memo:

"We now have apparent confirmation that the U.S. mounted a retaliatory raid on a convoy in Iraq (unclear whether it’s a drone attack or missiles) that killed a leader of the Iraqi militia that menaced the U.S. Embassy and critically also killed Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps."

The Daily Kos article centers around Trump's having failed to notify Congress, as required, before taking this action, another potentially impeachable offense, but even at Kos they seem to have missed the main takeaway from the story:  If the assassination was planned days in advance, it could not have been a response to the demonstrations at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, as the Trump administration is claiming. And the response could not, as TPM suggests, be a retaliation for something that happened after the assassination was planned.

Trump is purveying a total lie about that embassy takeover, and his latest war crime, exactly like the phony ones that Republicans accused Obama and Hillary of at Benghazi.  The lies Republicans told about Benghazi were allowed to metastasize into a major campaign issue in 2016; do you think for a moment that the press will treat this real malfeasance with anything like the outrage they expended over the Republican lies?

You Can't Make This Stuff Up

Our "President:

Consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before...We are no longer a country that will stand for demented words of violence & death.

Will there ever be a point where Republicans decided that enough is enough?

Just wondering, by the way...I hear all sorts of speculation about what spectacular acts of terrorism the Iranians will now commit, as if they think just like Trump.  Seems to me that they can pretty easily contrive to block the Persian Gulf to all shipping traffic, creating an oil crisis like we have never seen before.  Let's see then how many countries around the world side with the United States.  Of course, that may actually be Trump's intention; a gigantic gift to his master Vladimir Putin, and the ultimate act of destruction of our national security.

Wag the Dog

Here we go!!!

I Told You So

Looking at the Washington Post this morning, I  notice that coverage of the humiliating attack on our Baghdad embassy, and Trump's reliance on the Iraqi government to put a stop to it, has now vanished from their coverage.

This gives the story shorter legs that the tale of Carlos Ghosn's escape from the law in Japan, which the Post is still covering on a daily basis, let alone their allowing the nonexistent "scandal" of Benghazi to dominate the news for a year before a Presidential election.

Tell me again how the press is liberal.  Tell me again how the press even pretends to be even-handed in its treatment of Republicans and Democrats.  Tell me that, and I will tell you that you are lying.

The "Anti-Benghazi"

As Trump laughingly called the attack on our embassy in Baghdad today.  The Washington Post reports the following:

"Supporters of Iranian-backed militia end siege of U.S. Embassy in Baghdad...Kataib Hezbollah agreed to end the siege after Iraq’s prime minister guaranteed he would support efforts to pass a law calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops"

They end their siege! Hurray! Of course, it was in return for Iraq demanding the withdrawal of U.S. troops, which stands to benefit nobody in the world except for guess who?
Just a hint of whom I'm talking about here, in case you didn't figure it out for yourself.

It's a win-win situation, in the sense of heads, Putin wins, tails, Putin wins.  One more military obstacle to Putin's domination of the Middle East eliminated, without him having to get his fingerprints anywhere near the crime scene, or fire a shot.

And of course, a giant win for this previously virtually unknown group, which forced the mighty United States to back down when Trump's vaunted revitalized military could not even defend a massively fortified embassy from an angry crowd.

I said in a previous post that House Democrats should never let this miserable incident be forgotten for one day between now and the election.  And this is what I am talking about: In light of his past behavior, we cannot but be suspicious of Trump's giving one more present to Vladimir Putin.  This is an unmissable opportunity for House Democrats to completely revisit the issue of Trump's subservience to Putin, bit by bit worming out of the White House the clear evidence that Trump is an open traitor.  And as the weeks go by with Mitch McConnell refusing to allow witnesses or evidence at Trump's trial, new conclusions can be drawn, resulting in revised, and ever wider, articles of impeachment, until, in the end, the public evidence against him more adequately reflects the endless series of crimes and betrayals that is the entire story of his Presidency.
