"A Senate committee voted Tuesday night to restore $50 million a year in federal funding for abstinence-only education that President Barack Obama has pushed to eliminate. The 12-11 vote by the Senate Finance Committee came over objections from its chairman, Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana. Two Democrats — Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas — joined all 10 committee Republicans in voting "yes" on the measure by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah."

That's part of it, but I was really thinking more of their continued blockage of any form of "public option" in the committee's health care negotiations. These are obviously 2 Republicans who have infiltrated the Democratic party to sabotage any form of progressive legislation that might actually help people with less than 7 figure annual incomes. Or, maybe their pretending to be Democrats because they realized Republicans were unelectable in their home states. In any case, to my mind, these are the kinds of traitors that should be locked away in Guantanamo without due process, and, if possible, waterboarded alongside Cheney and Bush.

The Sovereigns and the Posse Comitatus- a Bit of Shared History

With the recent two incidents involving right wing Christian terrorists in this country*, and the total suppression, as usual, of their political affiliations by the mainstream press, I thought it would be beneficial to take a few minutes to consider briefly the history of these two groups, the Sovereign Citizen movement and the Christian Identity "religion."  This is not a complete story- the Christian Identity movement is an outgrowth of the British Israelite movement, which since the 1870's was based on the absurd claim that Northern Europeans were the real descendants of the Jews in the bible.  Various explanations have been given about where today's Jews came from, some going so far as to claim that Jews (and black people too, of course) are actually not human beings at all, but spawns of an affair which Satan supposedly had with Eve, which is why God ejected Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.  Well, enough of this idiocy, on with the story. I Can't Resist

I know it's useless, but I am going to make a remark about the acquittal of George Zimmerman for his murder of black teenager Trayvon Martin. I told this story some time ago, but it bears repeating.  As an L.A. Dodger fan, I learned that the Dodgers once had a minor league training camp in Sanford, Florida, the home of Zimmerman.  In the 1940's the Dodgers sent the now legendary Jackie Robinson, who would become the first black man to play major league baseball, to this camp: "As Jean West, a school teacher in Florida, wrote, "Branch Rickey had miscalculated the degree to which Jim Crow was entrenched in Sanford...The mayor of Sanford was confronted by what the author describes as a "large group of white residents" who  "demanded that Robinson...be run out of town."
