Drill, Baby, Drill

Let those oil companies just drill away, so we have enough oil right here at home, right?  That's what the Republicans have been telling us for years, isn't it?  That's how they justify giving billions to the world's most profitable business, while we can't even afford to pay our police and fire fighters at home.

Think again:

"For the first time, the top export of the United States, the world's biggest gas guzzler, is — wait for it — fuel.  Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel than any other single export...Still, the U.S. is nowhere close to energy independence. America is still the world's largest importer of crude oil.

Experts say the trend helps explain why U.S. motorists are paying more for gasoline. The more fuel that's sent overseas, the less of a supply cushion there is at home.  Gasoline supplies are being exported to the highest bidder, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service. "It's a world market," he says.

The last time the U.S. was a net exporter of fuels was 1949, when Harry Truman was president."

Americans prove themselves once again to be the biggest suckers in the world, falling for the notion that, if they let huge corporations do whatever they damned please, somehow those corporations are going to return the favor by making things better for us.  How stupid and ignorant do you need to be to continue to fall for this sort of thing?

But Wait- There's More:

If this whole thing weren't a big enough insult to the American people, consider this:

"Newt Gingrich told conservative activists on Wednesday that Sarah "Drill Baby Drill" Palin would be an ideal candidate for secretary of energy.

"I can't imagine anybody who would do a better job of driving us to an energy solution than Gov. Palin, for example...Tell her that she would certainly be on the list of one of the people we would consider."

Why not just appoint one of the Koch brothers and be done with it?

Reason number 976 that Newt "Mr. Ethics" Gingrich would be a horrible president.

Happy New Year!

We could reduce our oil imports by more than one-third is we did not export refined fuel and not affect our domestic supplies at all.

I'm not so sure the oil companies would like Palin. She raised taxes on the oil companies while governor of Alaska.

Last month there was an oil spill from a deep water drilling facility off the coast of Nigeria. That oil is sweeping to the shore and has devastated a way of life in thirteen villages. The villiagers are cleaning the oil using buckets. Royal Dutch Shell the owner of the rig denies any responsibility and has made zero effort in the clean up. BP would have taken the same approach when their oil hit the Gulf of Mexico last year if they could have pulled it off. Instead they made promises for restitution....most of which have been unfulfilled. It's the same deal pretty much. Off the topic of Newt and the Sarah, but still. This might be more relevant to Romney who says that he believes that corporations are people too.

It's relevant to all Republicans, because it's just one more instance of their endless lie that if we just let the rich do anything they damned please, somehow it's going to help the rest of us.
