What if the goal actually is the destruction of the country? What if they think that in the chaos that ensues, that the people will come to them and compliantly ask for dictatorship and a few crumbs? What if they are wrong and the people will do a Robespierre on them?

I am sorry to say this, but I think the goal is something like the destruction of this country. I often said, during the Bush administration, that Bush and Cheney must be sitting around regretting that the only thing that Hitler had going for himself that they didn't was a depression. With that, they could so weaken the country that the few thousand rich people who represent the total real constituency of the Republican party could seize power and finally give up any pretense that the rest of us have any rights at all.

Well, thank heaven, the Democrats saved us from a total depression this time around, so now the Republicans are back, working to so weaken the country that it can be turned into a third world dictatorship.

Hamas

  Of ocurse I am going to take the opportunity to talk about the Hamas attack on Israel.   First, I'd like to talk about my background, or baggage, regarding the country.   I have lived in Israel, some years ago.   This was not for religious reasons; I spent several months there working on a movie.   During pre-production, weeks of location scouting and shooting the movie, I was all over the country, and spent a fair amount of time in the West Bank, where we also shot.   This included a lot of places that normal tourists would not see, including predominantly Arab areas such as East Jerusalem, the Arab quarter of the old city, Ramla and the southern part of Jaffa, which is predominantly Arab.   It also included heavily Orthodox areas like Mea Shearim.   I dealt with Israeli Arabs, Palestinians and Bedouins.     Here are a few things I believe I learned there:   First of all, the Palestinians I knew were perfectly normal people with the same interest in living a safe, secure
