The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
Not in this country. Not if it is carried out by right wingers, that is. Here are a couple more things that the press is ignoring as hard as it can. First the case of Buford Rogers, who cannot be a terrorist because he isn't named Ahmed or Mohammed:
"FBI: Raid of mobile home disrupted "terror attack" in Minn...The FBI believes authorities disrupted "a localized terror attack" in its planning stages when they arrested a man after converging on a western Minnesota mobile home that contained Molotov cocktails, suspected pipe bombs and firearms, the agency said Monday. Twenty-four-year-old Buford Rogers of Montevideo appeared in court Monday. He was arrested Friday and charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm."
Buford is a militia member who apparently subscribes to the usual paranoid right wing lies, and who proudly displays an upside down American flag on his home, a sign of his hatred of the government. Here is a conflation of a few of his facebook posts:
"The war is here tsa agents are doing random cheeks and shooting people for no reson...ever one better get your guns ready cuz there comeing FEMA...the NWO has taken all your freedoms the right to bear arms freedom of speach freedom of the press cheek the shit out for your self this is fucking real"
Oh, and he lived in a "Patriot mansion," i.e. a mobile home, earned with his share of the wealth that has provided the Koch Brothers and Sheldon Adelson with the billions they use to destroy democracy in this country. FREEDOM!
Now, of course, he can't be a terrorist because- well we already got into that- so what is the explanation for all of this? It's easy to find, of course, by turning our attention to the wingnut blogosphere. Here's one example, although I could provide you with several more, which can be easily found through a five minute perusal of the results of googling "Buford Rogers:"
"Was ‘terrorist’ Buford Rogers actually being groomed as FBI informant? Buford ‘Bucky’ Rogers has all the same markings as a puppet being groomed for one of the FBI’s national terrorist dramas....He has the scary Facebook photos displayed publicly on social media. He kept an exotic weapon in his trailer, a Romanian-made AK-M rifle. He is also said to be the leader of the now notorious “Black Snake Militia”, an organization said to have “anti-government tendencies". Interesting, a little entertaining yes, but not that scary.
The FBI employs some 15,000 undercover agents today, roughly ten fold what they had 30 years ago. When you read through all the mainstream media hype and political grandstanding, witnessed during the Boston Bombings, one fact stands out like a sore thumb – and its the same fact that no one will talk about – suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was being handled by the FBI before the bombing and also was sent overseas under CIA cover...Even the World Trade Center Bombing in 1993 was a top to bottom FBI operation, but instead of swapping out the explosive material with harmless powder at the last minute, the FBI decided to let their ‘terrorist’ go ahead and set off a bomb with killed Americans."*
Oh yes, that's the answer- Buford must be a government plant, because the end result of years of inciting violence by right wing politicians and media figures couldn't be...violence.
Now, on to another example, the now infamous Adam Lanza of Newtown shooting fame. Here's an interesting fact about Adam Lanza that I just learned:
"Sources say Lanza saw himself as being in direct competition with Anders Breivik, a Norwegian man who killed 77 people in July 2011. Breivik killed eight with a bombing in downtown Oslo. He then moved to a nearby island where hunted down and fatally shot 69 people, mostly teenagers attending a summer camp....Officials have not publicly revealed what led them to the motive, but sources say investigators have found evidence Lanza was obsessed with Breivik."
What is particularly important to Americans is that Breivik himself has made it clear who influenced him:
"Geller and Spencer’s work actually shaped Breivik’s ideas...there is a wealth of evidence to suggest that the perpetrator of this atrocity...was very much part of a political movement — a movement whose leading ideologues regularly appear on Fox News and have high public profiles...In the United States, one of the most prominent public faces of the movement to which Breivik belongs is that of the notorious right-wing, pro-Israel, Islamophobic blogger, Pamela Geller, whose principal mouthpiece is Atlas Shrugs.
"Breivik is...specific in identifying the sources from whom he takes his own ideological direction: Robert Spencer,... Atlas [Pamela Geller]...
These are the preeminent voices promoting fear and hatred of Islam across Europe and America. But they also form — at least in Breivik’s mind — the “epicenter” of “political analysis” on the threat posed to cultural conservatives by multiculturalism in Europe and America."
I have frequently commented on this blog about the largely misunderstood fact that the bulk of terrorist violence takes place when individuals or small groups are inflamed with hatred by ideologues with whom they have little or no direct connection. That is the whole mechanism of "leaderless revolution," as perfected by the Irish Republican Army and the PLO, but it has produced most terrorist acts, going back nearly two hundred years now, to Russian Nihilism, Presidential assassinations in the United States, and the killing of Archduke Ferdinand. The incitement of Lanza can be traced back almost directly to uber-haters Geller and Spencer, who spread their poison without fear that they will pay a price, no matter how much damage they incite.
A similar story can be found in the actions of Jared Lee Loughner, the person who attacked Gabrielle Giffords. Though he has almost universally been portrayed in the press as simply a mentally ill maniac, his public statements and facebook posts reveal him (to anyone who cares to inform himself of the facts) to be an adherent of a faction of the Sovereign Citizen movement, which lies between Michelle Bachmann/Louie Gohmert style paranoia and open Aryan supremacism. This movement has been responsible for continued acts of violence since the 1990's- Terry Nichols, Timothy McVeigh's co-conspirator in the Oklahoma City bombing, for example was an adherent of Sovereign Citizen ideology.**
But of course, the press refuses to focus on the explosive growth of militias and other right wing maniacs like Buford Rogers and Adam Lanza, exploiting their acts for their sensationalist value, but totally censoring any understanding of why it is happening. This is the press' contribution to the growth of right wing terror in the United States, which apparently will be allowed to go on until it explodes in a futile but violent "war" against the United States.
