Is There No Limit to Delusion?
Shelby Steele, in today's Wall Street Journal:
"Today's liberalism may stand on decades of failed ideas...."
Yeah, Shelby, failed ideas like Social Security, Medicare, the FDIC, the Civil Rights act of 1964. You are right in a way- today's Liberalism does stand on decades of failed ideas- YOUR failed ideas.
"The first impulse is to moderate. With "compassionate conservatism" and "affirmative access" and "faith-based initiatives," President George W. Bush tried to show a redemptive conservatism that could be activist against the legacy of America's disgraceful past. And it worked electorally by moderating the image of conservatives as uncaring disciplinarians....."
Unfortunately, compassionate conservatism turned out to be a total lie designed to mask the looting of our national wealth by the rich. I'll give you this- it sure did work electorally. And look where that got us. Proud of your accomplishments, Shelby?
And by the way, the first impulse of conservatives is not to moderate- it's to steal everyone else blind.
"What drew me to conservatism years ago was the fact that it gave discipline a slightly higher status than virtue."
In deference to Godwin's law, I won't start listing other world leaders who valued discipline over virtue. You know, I thought discipline, where it is justified, is a virtue. So, I guess what you are saying here is that following the orders of your masters is the greatest virtue. There was a big trial in the late 1940's about this contention. Remember?
"The appeal of conservatism is the mutuality it asserts between individual and political freedom, its beautiful idea of a free man in a free society. And it offers minorities the one thing they can never get from liberalism: human rather than racial dignity."
I think minorities would prefer the dignity that comes from not being second class citizens and from having a decent chance to build a good life for their families. THAT is what they stand to gain from liberals; your insincere babbling about free men in free society is a pretty pathetic alternative. And that is why minorities are not as keen as Southern white guys to fall for your hypocritical promises.
But, good try, Shelby. Better luck next time.
