A Truly Loathsome Story

Another in the endless tale of hateful behavior by right wingers who call themselves religious. Here's an organization called "Human Rights International- Pro Life Missionaries to the World." They've given out their "International Pro-Life Award" to Bishop Dom Jose Cardoso Sobrinho. What did this august man of the lord do to earn this award? You may remember this story:

"In March Archbishop Cardoso Sobrinho declared that the Catholic doctors and counselors who facilitated the abortion of the unborn twins of a nine-year-old girl had incurred in a latae sententiae (automatic) excommunication by themselves.

“With this award, we are affirming that Archbishop Cardoso stands solidly with the Church in defense of all innocent human life,” said Fr. Thomas J. Euteneuer, president of HLI. “Archbishop Sobrinho acted with great compassion toward the girl and her family...."

If you don't remember this story, the nine year old girl became pregnant after several years of rape by her stepfather (who Archbishop Sobrinho did not see fit to excommunicate.) The doctors involved stated that, due to her age, it was not possible for her to give birth, and that she and both of the twins would die in the attempt. So much for the "defense of all human life" argument.

There are just no words to express how disgusting this contemptible man is. That someone actually went out of their way to give him an award for his subhuman behavior, is a sign of how far we have to go before we can claim to live in a decent world. That this man remains associated with the Catholic Church at this point is an indelible blot on the soul of the current Pope.

If this is religion, we need none of it.

Please check up on your facts. The girl's life was not in danger due to the pregnancy, according to the hospital. Pro-choice groups and media publicized this girl's tragic situation in order to gain sympathy for wider availability of abortion in Brazil. The doctors and counselors lied to the girl's parents saying the abortion was necessary (the parents are illiterate). When the father found out, he removed his permission, believing that the killing of two more human beings (she was pregnant with twins) was not the proper resolution to this tragedy. Then the doctors and counselors whisked the mother off to a clinic without telling anyone and performed the abortions.

You also haven't researched all that the archbishop and the local priests did to minister to the girl and her family. Of course, why would you do that? That just complicates the "religion is bad" story.

First the girl was abused by a sick individual, then she was exploited by those who think abortion should be legal for any reason whatsoever in a country where the majority disagree. And you call the *arcbhishop* "contemptible"?

From MSNBC:
"Health officials said the life of the girl — who weighs 80 pounds — was in danger."
That took me about thirty seconds to find using Google, along with dozens of other stories asserting the same thing.
So much for your honesty, SC Phelan.

I don't really give a damn about what the archbishop did to "minister" to the girl and her family. What she needed was to terminate this abominable pregnancy, not to be manipulated by a bunch of disingenuous, cynical religious hypocrites.

I have seen no sign, by the way, that this pathetic man took any positive steps to see that her abuser was brought to justice.

It is the church that manipulated her for its own gain, not the doctors.

You made a lot of nasty implications about me in your remarks. Really, you need to look in the mirror.
