Oh, the Idiocy
From the New York Times:
"WASHINGTON — In an abrupt shift, Senate Democratic leaders said on Tuesday that they would not provide the $80 million that President Obama requested to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba."
Mr. Senate majority leader, where are you? Hiding under the couch, again? And as for you, Barack, then leave it open. Just take the prisoners out.
"Republicans, including the Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, applauded the Democrats’ decision not to include the funds in their version of the military spending bill. Mr. McConnell, who has been warning for weeks about the dangers of closing the prison, said that he hoped it was a prelude to keeping the camp open and dangerous terror suspects off shore, where he said they belong."
In the first place, these prisoners do not "belong" in Guantanamo. Our treaty with Cuba does not permit the use of Guantanamo as a prison. Every day we continue to do so, we are perpetuating the lawlessness of the Bush regime.
Secondly, I thought Republicans were tough, macho he-men, not a bunch of scared little babies wailing in their cribs about the big, bad terror men who are going to break out of our maximum security prisons, and then do what? If we can keep Richard Ramirez and Charlie Manson in prison, I think we can keep this bunch in there too.
And I'll tell you what: I am willing to stake my security on the solidity of our prison walls, rather than bet it on a lawless government.
"Obama administration officials have acknowledged that if the Guantánamo camp closes, as scheduled, more than 100 of the prisoners will likely need to be moved to the United States, including 50 to 100 that have been described as “too dangerous to release” but likely cannot be prosecuted."
No, nameless "Obama administration officials," if they cannot be prosecuted, they belong back home. You know why: Because this is America. If the previous administration, through its mistreatment of these people, has made it impossible to prosecute them under our laws, then we Americans will just have to bear the risk.
And if they do something wrong after they get out, we will know who to blame, Mr. Cheney.
