I have just finished reading The Third Reich at War, the recently published third volume in Richard Evans' incredible history of the rise and rule of the Nazi party. I have read so much about various fascist movements in history; nothing that I have seen provides such a vivid portrayal of the social forces that enable something like this to happen. The three volumes make a very long and, at times painful, read, but the detailed case that Evans makes is absolutely compelling. I can't recommend these books too much.

I think I have only ever recommended one other book on this website. I am more than pleased to do whatever I can to lead anyone to this work.
