Deficit Monsters Rear Their Heads

Once again, we are about to suffer another round of one of the biggest lies in history:  the notion that Democrats and their social programs are responsible for the deficits that have plagued the country since Reagan took office.  Since that time, it has been the deliberate attempt of Republicans to destroy social spending, and thieve the money to give to their sociopathic rich backers, thus accomplishing two purposes: enriching their billionaires enough to keep them providing the money to flood the country with propaganda which keeps the Republicans in office, and also to achieve a long time goal of Republicans, deliberately destroying Social Security and Medicare, the two greatest Democratic contributions to the well-being of the American people.  Here is the hideously evil Mitch McConnell, being blunt about his intentions:

"McConnell eyes cuts to Medicare, Social Security to address deficit

Nearly a year ago, as the debate over Republican tax breaks for the wealthy was near its end, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) insisted that the tax cuts didn’t need to be paid for – because they’d pay for themselves...Whether the GOP leader actually believed his own rhetoric is an open question, but either way, we now know the Kentucky senator’s claim was spectacularly wrong. The Republican tax breaks have, as Democrats and those familiar with arithmetic predicted, sent the nation’s budget deficit soaring.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday blamed rising federal deficits and debt on a bipartisan unwillingness to contain spending on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and said he sees little chance of a major deficit reduction deal while Republicans control Congress and the White House.

“It’s disappointing but it’s not a Republican problem...Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid” funding constitutes “the real driver of the debt.”

Thus it has become necessary to delve into this preposterous, malignant lie, and once again point out the real source of government debt.  Here are two charts that pretty much tell the story.  I am sorry, but I was unable to find one graph that showed the entire time span; resulting in it being divided up this way.

To summarize this information:  The budget deficit in the last year of the Carter administration was $41 billion; seemingly a laughingly small amount after what we have seen since, but already enough for Republicans to demand cuts to social programs to deal with it. Under Reagan and Bush I, this number increased to $290 billion, or over seven times the last deficit under Carter.  The next Democratic President, Clinton, evaporated the deficit, and left the succeeding Republican President, Bush II, a $236 billion dollar surplus.  Bush II, through a combination of tax cuts for the rich and an unfunded war of aggression, precipitated an economic collapse which left the country with an annual budget deficit of $1.4 trillion dollars.  Obama, despite constant Republican attacks on everything he tried to do, reduced that deficit by over two thirds.  Now, from the moment the Republican Trump took over, the deficit is on the way up again, thanks in large part to the theft of six trillion dollars in tax money from the American people to give to the rich.  By 2019, the Trump deficit is projected to reach $984 billion, over twice the $438 billion dollar deficit left by Obama after superhuman effort to diminish the consequences of Republican economic malfeasance.  That number, due entirely to the corrupt actions of the last several Republican administrations, is almost exactly 24 times the deficit left by Jimmy Carter, before the Republican pillaging of the economy began.

And let us remember one more gigantic lie that Republicans are now telling.  Social security is entirely self funded, and does not receive one penny from the general government budget.  In fact, Republicans have raided vast sums of money from the Social Security funds, which they never had any intention of paying back.

This is the story, and do not ever let anyone tell you differently:  The national debt of the United States is virtually entirely due to Republican corruption and theft.  Of course, they will fight to the death the notion that the billionaire beneficiaries of that theft should ever have to give up a penny of their criminal proceeds.  No, it is, as usual, everyone else who must pay the price.  And the Republican party will continue pounding the American people to accept this monstrous deception as long as that party continues to exist.  After half a century watching this phenomenon, I am convinced that any path back into the light for the United States must involve the extermination of the Republican party, and the decisive demolition of the great economic lies that it has served up for a hundred years.

Yearly statistics for the federal budget deficit can be found here, if you are interested.

Wingnut Wrapup

I know I promised to stop annoying you with these, but I thought it would be fun to see how the Republicans are lying their way out of the abysmal performance of Brett Kavanaugh in his recent Senate hearing.  So, here we go:

Matt Vespa, Town Hall:  "After Ex-Boyfriend Nuked Her Testimony, Did Christine Blasey Ford Lie Before Congress?"

No, everyone could see she was sincere, even Trump.  But now a few days have passed so it's time for the Republicans to get back to smearing her.  What else did you expect?

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Grassley Slams Ford's Attorneys For Lack Of Candor, Again Requests Documentation on Her Polygraph and Therapy Notes"

Of course, Grassley refused to allow all the witnesses to testify at the the Senate hearing, but he feels free to slander Dr. Blasey Ford with absolutely groundless accusations that there is some sinister evil hidden in this material that she has absolutely no responsibility to release.  This is a sort of a reprise of the Hillary e-mail lies, when every right winger claimed that there was some huge hidden crime, which never emerged no matter how many tens of thousands of e-mails the Republicans pored over.

Michelle Malkin, Town Hall:  "Investigate the Senate Democrat Wrecking Machine"

See, the real malefactors here are not the Republicans, who nominated a belligerent, drunken liar and right wing hatchet man to sit on the Supreme Court, it's the Democrats who try to point this out.

"It is my contention that this grand unearth-and-destroy spectacle was planned, coordinated and facilitated by Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats and their staffers."

They planned a political response to an openly partisan political choice.  How dare they?

Star Parker, Town Hall:  "Pro-Abortion Left vs. Kavanaugh"

Republicans know perfectly well that this guy will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, even though he has lied about it over and over again.

Lauretta Brown, Town Hall:  "Sen. Graham Tells Audience: 'Boo Yourself' After They Boo Him For Saying Kavanaugh Was Treated 'Like Crap'

So fucking what.

And now time for a wingnut "humor" break:
Of course, that line came not from the FBI, but from the Republicans' bought and paid for prosecutor that they brought in to grill Dr. Ford, after a thirty year career of trying people arrested by Joe Arpaio.

Chris Reeve, Town Hall:  "Studies: Networks Systematically Ignore Prosecutor's Report Detailing Problems With Ford's Testimony"

Studies?  Well a "study."  Produced by the "Media Research Center," a right wing lie factory headed by Brent Bozell, author recently of "The Vast Anti-Kavanaugh Conspiracy" and "The Media Crazy Train On Kavanaugh," and former head of the National Conservative Political Action Committee. Bozell once called Barack Obama a  "skinny ghetto crackhead" on Fox News.  So take the study for what it is worth.

Beth Baumann, Town Hall:  "BREAKING: Ford's Ex-Boyfriend Pens Damning Letter Detailing Her Helping a Friend Prep For a Polygraph"

All over the right wing world today, and a complete lie, which has been utterly denied by the person taking the polygraph test.

Brandon Morse, Red State:  "Donald Trump Jr. Reminds Whoopi Goldberg that She’s On Record Supporting a Rapist After She Demeans His Sons"

This is Red State's lead story today:  a movie actress once said something.  That's the best they can come up with, I guess.  And just to be clear, whatever she said, it was about Roman Polanski, who, as far as I remember, was never up for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court.

Brad Slager, Red State:  "The Christine Ford Legal Team May Actually Be In Legal Trouble"

This was about her attorneys turning down an "offer" from the Republicans on the Senate committe to have some Republican staffers fly out to California to take her testimony in private, at which point it would be buried a thousand miles deep, and none of us would have ever heard a bit of it.  No word about whether Judge Kavanaugh might actually be in legal trouble as a result of at least half a dozen lies he told under oath to a Senate Committee.

And, ready for some more right wing Kavanaugh "humor?"
Something every little boy is praying for these days, I guess.  No cartoon about how many girls have to pray not to be raped by belligerent drunks like Judge Kavanaugh.

T. La Duke, Red State:  "Creepy Porn Lawyer Tries Again"

So far, buddy, he's batting 1000.  Deal with that.

Toni Araiksenin, PJ Media:  "How I Discovered the Portland ‘Dog Rape Culture’ Article Was a Hoax"

Okay, okay, so I lied.  Not every item today is about Kavanaugh.  Sorry, just couldn't pass this one up.

Bridget Johnson, PJ Media:  "McConnell Wants FBI Kavanaugh Report for Senators' Eyes Only; Schumer Wants Public Release"

Gee, why do you think that might be?

Thomas Lifson, American Thinker:  "Shocker: Dianne Feinstein does not want the FBI report released"

Just fine if Republicans want to do it, a horrible sin if Democrats do.  By the way, Dianne Feinstein is afraid that the Republicans will release the report with the names and addresses of all the witnesses, so they can be subject to the same sort of public smears and death threats already experienced by Christine Ford.  The Republicans undoubtedly want to pull a Devin Nunes stunt on the country, and leak a version of the report that is so mangled as to constitute one giant self serving lie.

PJ Media Staff:  "Lindsey Graham says Trump should re-nominate Kavanaugh if his nomination falls short."

Oh, what a great idea.  That should be really fun.

Christina Laila, Gateway Pundit:  "McConnell Puts Schumer in His Place – Denies Schumer’s Request For an All Senators Briefing on Kavanaugh FBI Report"

I guess McConnell must know something about what the FBI investigation, despite Republican attempts to destroy it, might turn up.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "EPIC! Democrat Senator SLAMMED at Presser: “Do You Honestly Believe Judge Kavanaugh Was Leader of Teenage Irish Catholic Rape Gang?”

Sorry, Jim, you lost me with the word "Catholic."  After all, they would only be applying the lessons they learned from their religious leaders.

Chip McLean, Renew America:  "Democrats are destroying the nation in order to win...The fact is that the great majority of the senate Dems had already decided to vote against Kavanaugh before his name was even selected."

Talk about projection.  That remark is, of course, a vicious lie, as witness the overwhelming Democratic vote for Trump's previous nominee.  It is, however, true that despite their dissembling, every Republican was committed to voting for whatever right wing hatchet man Trump picked.

And let's just get down to the real craziness:

Kari Lee Fournier, Renew America:"My family and my name have been totally and permanently destroyed by vicious and false additional accusations," stated a visibly angry and shaken Judge Brett Kavanaugh at the recent U. S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Not so fast, Judge Kavanaugh.... Many see this attack for what it is...your reputation is intact. This is simply part and parcel of things that are to happen according to Bible prophecy. Yes, those who know and read Scripture prophecy understand exactly what is taking place at both this hearing and with other world events. Things are rapidly winding down on earth. Plain and simple."

Well, if it's ordained by God, I guess you people had better stop blaming Democrats for it.

And one last taste of the big laughs wingnuts are getting from all of this:
See, it was Diane Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi who supplied Kavanaugh with all that beer, and then forced him to perjure himself in front of the Senate committee.

And let's just finish this subject with a story from my favorite news source:

Man, try to top that one.
Anyway, this is getting repetitive.  Let's just move on to a few other choice tidbits from the wingnuts:

Alan Keyes, Renew America:  "Greater than Lincoln or Washington?  Alan Keyes says Trump UN speech akin to Babe Ruth's historic home run"

No comment that I could ever make could capture the sheer deranged lunacy of that remark.  And, by the way, not just Lincoln or Washington:

"Like David, the president of the United States enacted his gesture of defiance."

King David.  Trump is as great as King David.  Oh well...

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez the dumbest politician in America?"

Forgot all about Louie Gohmert, Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin, have you, Rick?  Oh, and that guy your party (and Putin) put in the White House.  In fact, the last two guys you put in the White House.

Capt. Dave Bertrand, ret, Before it's News:  "Civil War Alert: Once Kavanaugh Is Confirmed, All the "Stops" Will Be Removed By President Trump and His Military Support Team...ANTIFA is organizing violence against Conservatives at all levels nationwide...Twitter is complacent and helping the Communists by allowing hate content to proceed while shutting down all Conservative voices and comments...

Once Kavanaugh is confirmed, all the “stops” will be removed by President Trump and his military support team and those inside the Pentagon to assure a fair and legal midterm election while the 51,000 plus sealed indictments hang over the heads of the Communists now panicking like never before...If Patriots are successful, violence will turn into Civil War."

This vital information brought to you by Capt. Bertrand, not at all a crazy person, who also has this to say:

"Civil War Alert: Leftists Openly Plot Mass Executions of Conservatives as Democrats Release Home Addresses of Republican Senators"

And enough paranoia for one day, huh?  Well, how about one more:

Before it's News:  "The Incredible Kanye West Clone Setup, Explained!!  Kanye West Was Too Human For The Music Industry And He Ended His Life, That Night On The Stage To Bring You Truth, To Be Replaced With A Clone!!"

Yes, Kanye West is a clone.  And here is the evidence:

"Kanye West never used to smile… now he smiles all the time."

Well, I guess that proves that.

Now, let me close with this.  I have noticed the last year or so that the really crazy right wing garbage seems to have almost entirely migrated to videos.  My suspicion is that a majority of right wingers just can't read very well, and since they are far less interested in facts than in having their emotions twanged, videos are a far better medium to reach them.  There are tens of thousands of examples of this deplorable junk on line.  I thought you might like to try a couple of minutes of an example.  This one was picked pretty much at random; there's lots worse if you look.

Another Case Where Kavanaugh Would Have to Recuse Himself

A headline in the Washington Post today:

"Supreme Court contemplates whether man who cannot remember crime may be executed"

Or whether they should just take him out of prison and give him the appeals court judgeship that Kavanaugh formerly held.

Another Presidential Standard Crushed

Another simple rule of human decency trampled under the feet of Donald Trump.

Here's an episode in Presidential history that many of you may not remember.

From a 1970 story in the New York Times:

"Nixon Calls Manson Guilty, Later Withdraws Remark...
WASHINGTON, Aug. 3 (1970)— President Nixon asserted today that Charles Manson, a hippie cultist now on trial in California, “was guilty, directly or indirectly, of eight murders without reason.”
But, faced with criticism that he had prejudged the outcome of the Manson trial, Mr. Nixon, issued a statement on his arrival here tonight saying that “the last thing I would do is prejudice the legal ‘rights of any person, in any circumstances.”
This remark caused a furor around the country, and very nearly resulted in a mistrial in the Manson case.  To Nixon's credit, he realized before the day was out that he had made a big mistake, and seemingly sincerely apologized for what he said.

This case set a standard that has been uniformly followed since that time: that given his position, no President ever comments on matters like this.  It has been a universal standard, followed by Democrats and Republicans alike, and would seem to be particularly inviolable in cases involving the President himself.  That is, it has been universal, until today:

Trump's remarks let his audience of subhuman scum to start cheering and chanting "lock her up," about a woman who is guilty of nothing.

Once again, Donald Trump has found a new way to degrade himself, the Presidency and the entire country.  And the Republican base loves it.  They love the hatred, the violence, the willingness to do anything, no matter how abominable, to get his way.  It's the way these nauseating people will act themselves if anyone is stupid enough to give them power.  We never have faced up to just how many loathsome, hateful people there are, particularly among white citizens in this country.  And it may have already sown the seeds of our destruction.

The Last Straw?

Or just one more poison pill that the Republicans are happy to force down our throats?

From Daily Kos, reporting on a story at NBC News:

"NBC News: Kavanaugh contacted witnesses prior to publication of Ramirez assault claims...NBC News reports that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was apparently in personal contact with potential witnesses he believed would cast doubt on the allegations that he exposed himself to a female student during a drunken Yale party.
It would seem to be a very odd move for a Supreme Court nominee to be personally involved in speaking to witnesses in a preemptive attempt to discredit testimony against him"

Let's just be clear about this.  It is not "a very odd move." It is witness tampering.  It is subornation of perjury, a major felony.   And is there a person on earth, even one as big a liar as Lindsey Graham, or Trump himself, that would claim that this Yale law school graduate, this man who has been a judge for over a decade, does not know that?  Is there anyone in the country that thinks it was okay for this degraded specimen of humanity to contact potential witnesses and pressure them about their testimony?

And just to add to this sordid incident, it appears that Kavanaugh made these contacts before the publication of the Ramirez story in the New Yorker, contrary to Kavanaugh's claim that he never heard about Ramirez' claims before the story was published, which would amount to one more count of perjury.

No one expected Trump to be fair or civic minded in his selection of a Supreme Court Justice.  But isn't this a step too far even for Senate Republicans, appointing a Justice that breaks the most fundamental judicial laws right in their faces, and feels perfectly entitled to do so?

Wait, how foolish of me.  Republicans will do anything, no matter how petty, no matter how criminal, if it advances the interests of the rich sociopaths that keep them as slaves.  And they will do it while screaming out in self-righteous anger about what a dirty trick it is for Democrats to try to keep a monster like this off of the Supreme Court.

Just for Reference, in case you are wondering:

U.S. Code › Title 18 › Part I › Chapter 73 › § 1512

(b) Whoever knowingly...corruptly persuades another person, or attempts to do so, or engages in misleading conduct toward another person, with intent to—
(1) influence, delay, or prevent the testimony of any person in an official proceeding;
(2) cause or induce any person to—
(A) withhold testimony, or withhold a record, document, or other object, from an official proceeding...shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

(e) In a prosecution for an offense under this section, it is an affirmative defense, as to which the defendant has the burden of proof by a preponderance of the evidence, that the conduct consisted solely of lawful conduct and that the defendant’s sole intention was to encourage, induce, or cause the other person to testify truthfully.

(g) In a prosecution for an offense under this section, no state of mind need be proved with respect to the circumstance—

(1) that the official proceeding before a judge, court, magistrate judge, grand jury, or government agency is before a judge or court of the United States, a United States magistrate judge, a bankruptcy judge, a Federal grand jury, or a Federal Government agency

(Bolding by me.)  Note:  the law against subornation of perjury applies to all "official proceedings "
in front of any "government agency," which would presumably include the United States Senate.  Also note that the burden of the proof in a case like this is on the defendant.

Democrats Commit the Mortal Sin Again

Will they ever learn?

And what is that mortal sin?  Despite decades now of painful lessons to the contrary, they still insist on pretending that there is one God damned thing the Republicans ever do that is done honorably or out of a sense of right and wrong.

The case in point today?  The one week FBI "investigation" the Republicans announced yesterday.  Democrats (and the mainstream press, of course) fell hook line and sinker for the preposterous notion that there is one Republican on the face of the earth who cares about decency; in this case, Senator Jeff Flake, who "negotiated" this one week halt in the process of putting a lying right wing hack with a rage control problem so great that he can't help display it on national television, on the Supreme Court.

Well, once again, let me explain what is going on here.  The combination of Ms. Blasey Ford's overwhelmingly powerful testimony, and the hateful monkey show put on by Kavanaugh made it immediately obvious even to the second-grader intellect of Donald Trump, that an immediate confirmation of Kavanaugh would likely result in the loss of millions of female votes.  So, they devised this strategy:  They would have a Republican Senator who is not running for reelection, so he couldn't be savaged by their maniac base, call for a delay in the confirmation process, and then propose an FBI investigation so circumscribed in time that it is almost impossible that they can actually nail down conclusive evidence.  So, they rolled the dice.  One of two things could happen.  Either their rigging of this investigation will cause it to fail, in which case they get their miserable, corrupt choice on the Supreme Court, and get the added advantage of being able to campaign on how the unfair Democrats were up to nothing but character assassination, or else something is found, in which case Kavanaugh will withdraw, and Trump will nominate someone every bit as bad.  And above all, they are counting on the pathetic memory of the presumably brain-dead American voters to basically bring them in a week to forget all about what a hideous monster Kavanaugh showed himself to be.

Pretty much a win-win strategy for the Republicans, and the Democrats just ate it up.

This refusal to face reality about what a grotesque aberration the Republican party has become was the main fault of Barack Obama, and of Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and virtually every other Democrat too.  Until they accept the fact that the Republicans are not a political party any more, but a cabal dedicated to establishing a literally fascist government in this country, because it benefits a couple thousand of their largest donors, the Democrats will never be able to adequately fight back.  It's time to give up the pretense.  We are fighting a party of would-be dictators, and right now, they are winning.

Update: And here we go. As reported at Daily Kos this evening:

"Donald Trump is placing limits on the FBI investigation that will prevent them looking into, among other things, Brett Kavanaugh’s drinking or the accusations made in an affidavit by Julie Swetnick. The limits set could make it impossible to ascertain even the most basic facts, turning the FBI investigation from cursory … into a complete sham...In fact, most of the facts related to even Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s accusations will be impossible to pursue under the limits set by Trump. Those limits include a fixed list of people the FBI is allowed to talk to. And, unbelievably in a case that hinges on Kavanaugh’s behavior when drunk, the FBI will not be allowed to ask about his drinking."

And they get a twofer:  An investigation crippled so that it finds nothing, and a lie to be used to beat up on Democrats this election season.

And Update 2:  After coming under considerable criticism about his blatant attempts to cripple the FBI investigation, Trump has tweeted that he is not doing any such thing.  Five thousand lies into his Presidency, what halfway sane person would believe that Trump and his staff are not desperately searching for ways to see that the "investigation" is nothing but a whitewash?

A Letter To My Senators

I would like to share with you a letter that I wrote to my two Senators today, both of whom sit on the Judiciary Committee:

"Senator .......,

In his voluntary statement to the Senate Judiciary committee yesterday, Judge Kavnaugh made the following statement, as you obviously know:

"This whole two-week effort has been a calculated and orchestrated political ...revenge on behalf of the Clintons..."

May I point out to you that imagining plots against yourself by famous individuals is a classic sign of schizophrenia.  I request that you demand that any confirmation vote of Kavanaugh not take place until he can be subject to psychiatric examination.

Characters From a Hearing

1.  Kamala Harris

My mother was an attorney, and I remember when I was in high school reading a book she had, My Life in Court, by Louis Nizer, one of the most famous trial attorneys of his day.  In the introduction, he talked about the notion that trials were won by great speeches or razor sharp cross examination.  No, he said, trials are won or lost before the attorneys ever set foot in the courtroom.  Preparation, not histrionics wins the day, and there never was a better example of that than the one provided by former prosecutor Kamala Harris, in her comments to Rachel Mitchell, the woman who has spent thirty years  in Maricopa County, Arizona, trying people arrested by Joe Arpaio.  Let this be a lesson to Ms. Mitchell: a county prosecutor should be wary against going up against someone like Harris, the former attorney general of the nation's largest State.

Harris, apparently alone of all of her colleagues, thought to do a little research on Ms. Mitchell, and found online the official Maricopa County guidelines for handling sex crime accusations, which Ms. Mitchell had signed off on, and read some of them in the limited time she was given to speak.  Virtually all of Mitchell's questioning, relating to irrelevant issues like Christine Blasey Ford's fear of flying, the timing of her making her complaint, who exactly had paid for her polygraph test (not a word about the fact that she passed the test,) and other issues, were far outside Ms. Mitchell's own guidelines for handling sex crime victims.  Maybe eclipsed by the nauseating behavior of Judge Kavanaugh later in the day, but it was a master class in cross examination.

2.  Lindsey Graham

I don't know what it is about this guy and the press.  Graham has engaged, for decades, in one disgraceful display of partisan hackery after another, and every time, the press acts surprised and reports that he was always such a nice guy up until now, and then they give him a pass just this one time, because he was always a Southern gentleman before.  Well, today, in the public tantrum that he threw in between the testimony of Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh, and later in his sickening stroking of Kavanaugh's ego, rather than show one sign of caring about his duty in regard to a Supreme Court Nominee, Graham provided a lesson for the ages in how to act like a corrupt politician.

Here's a sample from Vox, although the excerpts are readily available many other places:

“To my Republican colleagues, if you vote no, you’re legitimizing the most despicable thing I have seen in my time in politics,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) boomed during Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s Senate Judiciary hearing Thursday.
It was one line in a shockingly fiery speech Graham delivered during the questioning of Kavanaugh about allegations that he sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford more than 30 years ago. (He has denied the accusation.)
Graham didn’t really question Kavanaugh — instead he expounded on the Supreme Court nominee’s own defense, expressing remorse for the way Kavanaugh and his family have been treated and decrying the politics that put him in that situation.
“This is the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics and if you really wanted to know the truth, you sure as hell wouldn’t have done what you’ve done to this guy!” Graham said, his face contorted in anger."

The most despicable thing he has seen in politics...more despicable than the outrageous 25 year long campaign of smears and lies directed against the Clintons; more despicable than the lying swift boat campaign that sunk John Kerry in 2004, more despicable than perverting Congress in the endless Benghazi hate campaign and Hillary e-mail smears, both based on absolutely nothing, more despicable than the partisan hatchet job disguised as an impeachment hearing of Clinton, in which Judge Kavanaugh played a major role; more despicable than the murder of a million innocent Iraqi civilians by a Republican President, more despicable than Republican torture, more despicable than shoveling so much money into the pockets of sociopathic rich Republican backers that it caused the whole economy to collapse in 2008, and above all, more despicable than the treasonous collusion that put into office the Republican President who has chosen to try to force this right wing hatchet man with a long history of unethical political behavior onto the Supreme Court.

This is not the utterance of a decent human being taking his position as a Senator seriously, it is the speech of a vicious partisan hack, which is all Graham has ever been.

Graham is (to use his word) as despicable a character as can be found in the whole despicable Republican party, but if you expect the same mainstream press than hails Paul Ryan as a brilliant economist and hailed Antonin Scalia as a masterful legal scholar, to ever notice Graham's real nature, forget it.

3.  Brett Kavanaugh

Before going further, I would like to display this photo from today's hearing:

I ask you to take a good look at the faces of the women sitting in the audience behind Kavanaugh, which in the end says all that needs to be said about this loathsome man.

So, this guy is a Federal appeals court judge.  He has spent his entire career as a lawyer, allegedly graduating near the top of his class at Yale Law School.  There is absolutely no way that he does not know what behavior is expected from a witness in a hearing like this.  But what we got for him was lies and smears against Democrats, some who had exactly zero to do with this entire affair, like Bill and Hillary Clinton, who, in a display of nearly schizophrenic paranoia, he accused of carrying out a vendetta against him, displays of nearly uncontrolled rage, refusal to answer direct questions, filibustering on and on with irrelevant answers to questioning, and even stooping to effectively accusing one of his Senatorial questioners of being an out of control drunk.  Neither Judge Kavanaugh, nor any other judge in this country would allow that behavior in his courtroom, but it was just fine with the eleven Senators who controlled this process.

If there had been absolutely no reason to oppose Kavanaugh's nomination before this afternoon, there would be a totally valid one now: that he is a man given to uncontrollable fits of anger and who will lie and distort the truth at will if it will serve his purpose.  This is a very inferior human being, and the nation deserves better.

No Depth to their Degradation

Here's a picture that is making it around the right wing world today:

It took me less than five minutes to do a reverse image search and find what is apparently the original picture:
Not to dwell on details too much, but notice that the ground under the picnic table is identical in both pictures; only the part above the table was replaced.

Needless to say, this picture has absolutely zero to do with Christine Blasey Ford, but that is not stopping the disgusting dregs of humanity on the right from circulating it.  I left a comment at one place that had posted the smear photo, and the answer I got was that they didn't care whether it was her or not, she should still be "put in a cage."

There is absolutely no possibility of ever entering into a rational relationship with these people.  They have been infected with a terminal mental disease.  Every one of them is evil, and we will have to live with them until they all die off, by whatever means.

They're All Degenerates

I want to mention something my wife said several years ago, in response to a previous outbreak of Republican sleaziness.  She suggested that, in response to the fact that a few Republicans showed a conscience in regard to the Nixon impeachment, civil rights legislation and other such things, the leaders of the Republican party decided that nobody would be allowed to advance in Republican politics unless they had some disgusting secret that could be held over their heads, to keep them from making one move outside the party line.  I think she was pretty much joking when she first said that, but over the years, both of us have more and more begun to suspect that something like this is true.  Well, here's another piece of evidence that she might be right.

Green Eagle's Paranoid Fantasy of the Day

So, the near miracle happens and the Democrats win back the House in November.  The Republicans, knowing perfectly well that both Trump and Pence are up to their necks in treasonous collusion with the Russians, are aware that the minute the new House is sworn in, a Democrat will become next in line to be President, and will therefore force Trump and Pence to resign in December, and Paul Ryan, a miserable, morally bankrupt man with a long record of putting party over country, will become President of the United States.

If they are willing to stoop to any kind of dirty behavior to rig the Supreme Court, don't think for a second that they wouldn't do the same with the Presidency.  I don't know what kind of threats it would take to get Trump out of the White House, but I am sure they are up to it.

The True Tragedy of Brett Kavanaugh

Let's first of all be clear who Brett Kavanaugh is.  He is not an honest jurist, he is a right wing hatchet man who has made his career by promoting the worst behavior of Republicans.  As an aide to Ken Starr. it was he who induced Starr to reopen the long discredited story that Bill and Hillary had Vince Foster murdered, and spent two years, knowing every second that he was lying, keeping this smear in the news.  Working for George W. Bush, it was Kavanaugh who induced Bush to go on his absolutely despicable campaign involving the brain-dead Terry Schiavo, inflicting her family and the nation with more years of pain, over something that, once again, he knew was a lie.  He perjured himself over and over again in his original judicial hearings and he has done it one more time with the Supreme Court appointment: every single sentient person in the country knows perfectly well that he is lying over and over again when he attempts to deny his clear intention to mangle the law every chance he gets to benefit the rich sociopaths that own the Republican party, and pander to the fools who obey them.  He interprets the Constitution in utterly contrary ways, depending on whether a Republican or a Democrat is involved; he worked as hard as he could to have Clinton impeached, and now has clearly signaled that he will do everything he can to frustrate the investigation of Trump's massively more malignant behavior.  He has used documents stolen from Democrats in his attempts to seek office.  In truth he is nothing but a corrupt criminal, which is exactly why the Republicans, every one of which is a criminal too, want him on the court.

Now, here is the sad thing:  All of these are indisputable facts, and yet the vast majority of Americans have no interest in them.  The only damned thing that can penetrate the wall of their ignorance is sex, and so after all that has been revealed about Kavanaugh, the only thing that 99 Americans in a hundred knows about him is that he forced himself on a girl 35 years ago.  The same is true with the President who appointed Kavanaugh for the sole purpose of destroying the ability of the country to hold him accountable for his crimes.  Anyone that knows the real facts is aware that there were dozens of contacts between the Trump campaign and Russians, and knows that the Russians have a decades-long history of helping Trump finance his lifestyle, and worked to subvert the election process to put Trump in the White House; and anyone that knows the real facts knows that Trump, as President, has over and over again acted to pay the Russians back by favoring their interests over the interests of our allies, and our own people.  This is the clearest case of treason that could possibly be imagined, but once again, the only thing that the majority of Americans are aware of is Stormy Daniels.

So the Democrats, in light of the fact that our nation's press will not cover the criminality of this man, are reduced to the position they are in now, struggling desperately to keep a wretched piece of corrupt scum off the Supreme Court.  That is sad enough, but it is not the saddest thing about this whole malignant spectacle.  And here is the truly sad thing: if, after a life and death struggle against Republican evil, the Democrats succeed in having Kavanaugh thrown on the dust heap of history, there are ten thousand more Republican operatives, every one of them just as corrupt and morally bankrupt as Kavanaugh, waiting in line right behind them.  Can the Democrats crush the nominations of two of these miserable people, or three?  And what then?  If the Republicans are intent on putting such a monster on the court, they are going to succeed, and that is the truly sad feature of this entire process: it is not just Kavanaugh who is corrupt, but the entire Republican party, and they are going to make the government a cesspool of corruption no matter how many of them are revealed for what they are.

Both Siderism Sinks to a New Low

In a miserable article from the Washington Post about today's Republican resort to a criminal libel against a totally innocent man to try to cover up the degraded nature of their Supreme Court nominee:

"On Thursday night, a conservative legal scholar took to Twitter to suggest a man who looked like Brett Kavanaugh, rather than Kavanaugh himself, might have sexually assaulted Christine Blasey Ford 36 years ago. The scholar, Ed Whelan, even named the man and provided a recent picture...
It also epitomizes how the Kavanaugh imbroglio has become extremely ugly — and is likely to get even uglier.
...With the stakes so high, the facts so fungible and the clock ticking louder, it’s almost a perfect storm for ugliness. And it’s hardly over."

At no point in this article is it never acknowledged that the crime (and it is a crime against all of us, given the stakes) was perpetrated solely by Republicans.  No, it's just that things have gotten ugly, and everyone involved is at fault, the victims as well as the perpetrator.  In fact, this outrageous coverage is compounded ten times over by allowing the perpetrator of this crime to justify himself by blaming the Democrats for his own hatefulness:

“It is regrettable that private citizens are being drawn into this,” Whelan said Thursday night,...But that is the product of [Senate Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat Dianne] Feinstein’s shockingly shoddy handling of the whole matter.”

There is not one attempt to present a contrary Democratic view of this Republican abomination.  And the Washington Post is what passes for a leader of the "liberal press." So, that is how a "political party" which is nothing but a corrupt conspiracy to steal the wealth of the nation manages to still win elections in our country.

With all the distractions going on, I wish to point out that, once again, the mainstream press is totally ignoring the war on Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Corruption? Who Cares?

The endless string of abominations by the Trump administration is so great that this one is essentially going unnoticed, but it is so grotesquely cynical that I cannot resist bringing it to your attention.  From the Los Angeles Times, which does as good a job as any mainstream news source I know of in reporting on Latin America:

"A robust anti-corruption agency, seen as a model for Latin America, was created 12 years ago in Guatemala with strong U.S. support, and notched up an enviable record.

The International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala has prosecuted and jailed a former president, vice president and hundreds of corrupt police officials, politicians and businessmen.

But Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales announced on Aug. 31 that he was shutting the acclaimed commission, citing vague national security concerns. The panel was investigating Morales for possible campaign fraud."

A President shutting down a corruption commission which just happened to be investigating him.  Anyone want to take any bets on what the response of the Trump White House has been?

"Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo initially reacted with a tweet praising Guatemala’s relationship with Washington and thanking it for its “efforts in counter-narcotics and security.”

The State Department later said that Pompeo had called Morales to reiterate U.S. support for “Guatemalan sovereignty” and for a “reformed” anti-corruption commission, comments that critics saw as tacit approval of the Morales move.

U.S. officials privately justified Pompeo’s comment by saying that the commission’s crusading zeal could threaten Guatemala’s stability by undermining the government. Those concerns outweighed the fight against corruption, a senior State Department official said."

"Undermining the government" by uncovering evidence that the President has engaged in criminal corruption. Think now, does that concern bring to your mind anything else that is going on in the world today, where the President of a country might like to set a precedent that his own evidenceless claims of national security require crushing an inquiry into his illegal behavior?  I know you can think of a comparable example if you just consider the problem hard enough.

As I said, just one more in the endless string of hateful acts perpetrated by our current administration, but one that I thought was worth mentioning, for the sheer nerve that it took to take this position.

Can There Really Be Any American Who Is Not Ashamed of This Man?

Donald Trump today, going to a 9-11 memorial.  What is he cheering with this gesture, and what kind of demented mind causes anyone to have this expression on his face on such an occasion? He looks like a rabid animal.
This is a truly sick individual, and I want to make something perfectly clear:  There has been plenty of talk lately among Republicans and the complicit press about the alleged mental decline of Trump over the last year or so.  This is utter rubbish; he has been exactly the same as long as we have known anything about him.  What is really going on here is an ex post facto rewriting of history, so they can claim, "well, he's crazy now, but that doesn't mean that I was wrong when I supported him in 2016.  It's just a sad story, like all the other right wing monsters who are mentally ill, unlike Muslims who act the exact same way but are hateful criminals.  No conclusions to draw here about our party and the abominable thing we did to the country, so we are free once again to start lying and cheating our way back into power any day now."

The Trump Juggernaut Moves On!

Once again, Green Eagle has a chance to report on the massive pro-Trump movement around our land.

"A big pro-Trump rally called “The Mother of All Rallies” (or MOAR for short) is taking place (Saturday) in Washington, D.C...The MOAR rally began its opening ceremonies at the north end of the Mall, near the Washington monument, at 11 a.m. Eastern, according to their website...The organizers originally wanted one million people at the event."

Here are a couple of representative photos of the massive crowd:

One million people?  Well, they fell about 999,800 short of their goal.  Close enough for winguts to declare victory, I guess.

I'll leave the final remark to commenter James McMullen:

Technically, does it still count as a HUGE rally if most of the scant crowd who showed up there are seriously overweight?"

"TRUMP, questioning whether one of his senior officials acted illegally about an administration effort to thwart his agenda: “TREASON?” — tweet Wednesday."

There is no statute of limitations on treason, as far as I know.  Well, if spreading "fake news*" about the President is treason, is not Trump himself guilty of treason for having led a national media campaign to accuse President Obama of being a foreign born Muslim, something he knew perfectly well was a lie?   Maybe it's time for some fair minded Federal prosecutor to charge Trump with that.

Just asking.

*Of course, we know that the charges in the recent New York Times op ed are not fake news, but real news, except in the sense that it is not news at all since every sentient human being already knew it was true.

Sixty Days Before an Election

The Republicans are engaged in a full throated demand that the Mueller investigation must not take any actions in the sixty days before the upcoming November 6th election.  They are obviously deadly afraid that anything Mueller might reveal will further tip public opinion against themselves, so they are citing this informal Justice Department rule as an inviolable law of political conduct.

Well, here is a question that I have not seen asked.  I would assume that if this rule has any standing at all, it would only apply to people who are actually running for office in the upcoming election.  Otherwise, why wouldn't every criminal defendant in the country demand that his prosecution stop for the two months leading up to any election?  Well, Donald Trump and his corrupt associates are not running for any office.  Regardless of the viability of this rule, there is no reason on earth to believe that it applies to him.  Let the investigation and the indictments and the convictions go on.  If it casts a bad light on Trump's whole party, well, too damned bad.

The Truth About Republican Justices

Now that it is all but inevitable that the country is going to be saddled with one more Republican Supreme Court Justice, rammed through by systematic hiding of his record and beliefs, I want to make perfectly clear a point that I have heard nobody make in a straightforward way.

Rehnquist, Thomas, Scalia, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh...these are not Conservative Justices, they are not right wing Justices.  They are corrupt justices.  Their only intent is to aid the half century long Republican plan to turn the country into an oligarchic dictatorship with a few hundred rich families, and with three hundred million citizens living in poverty, without the slightest chance to affect the government's behavior.

Bush v. Gore, Citizens United, District of Columbia v. Heller, and a thousand other decisions, made not on the basis of the Constitution, but on the basis of what serves the interests of those few hundred families; criminal decisions made by criminal Justices.  And even though these decisions run counter to the will of the great majority of the people, they are made anyway, by a court stripped of honest Justices and packed with criminals.

And with Kavanaugh, a man who has made it clear that he is fine with enabling dictatorial powers for a President and crushing out of existence any public knowledge of his criminality, we will be stuck with this abomination for decades.

I repeat: these Justices have no ideology, no beliefs, and no respect for the history and well-being of this country.  They are corrupt criminals who are being elevated to hollow out the United States and leave it nothing but a third world dictatorship.  And as this is just fine with a party which is perfectly willing to seize and maintain power through any kind of force and subterfuge, it looks like that is what we are going to get.

As most people are aware, until well into the Renaissance, it was the common belief, at least in Europe and the Middle East, that the sun, the planets and everything else revolved around the earth.  This widespread belief came to be attached to the name of one Ptolemy:

"Claudius Ptolemy was a Roman astronomer who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, in the 2nd century AD. His attempt to explain the motions of the celestial bodies became the accepted theory throughout Europe and the Middle East for almost 2000 years. Only during the Scientific Revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries did people such as Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo Galilei call the Ptolemaic model into question.

According to Ptolemy, the earth sat in the center of the universe with all of the planets (including the sun and the moon, which were also described as planets during this time) sitting within nested crystalline spheres surrounding the earth. They were ordered according to the amount of time necessary for the planet to make a single observed orbit. Thus, the moon was the closest, then Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were unknown at the time as they can only be observed by telescopes, which were not invented until the Scientific Revolution.)"

As scientists and philosophers calculated with more acuracy the movement of the sun and the planets, it became harder and harder to account for their paths, based on the assumption of a universe centered around the earth; but of course a sun-centered solar system was anathema particularly to religious people who insisted, often violently, on seeing the whole universe as centered around themselves and their myths.  The result of this false belief can be seen in the illustration above, which shows the complexity that resulted from the belief that the Earth was the center of the solar system.  This was true even though the sun-centered view did so much to simplify understanding of the motions of the planets, as can be seen by this drawing from the time:

The solar system of Copernicus

Why am I harping on this old piece of information?  Because I believe we are seeing a modern version of the epicycles playing out in front of our eyes in the claims, currently almost unbelievably popular on the right, made by some unknown person or entity known as QAnon.  I am sure most of you have heard of this unified field theory of right wing conspiracies by now, but if not, it involves a high ranked government official, perhaps Donald Trump himself, posting hundreds of cryptic remarks at 4chan, perhaps the most unlikely site to report anything true anywhere on the internet.  These posts, laced with numerology and endless other virtually unintelligible content, are interpreted to "prove" that Robert Mueller is working for Donald Trump, and they have prepared secret indictments against tens of thousands of Democrats, Muslims, Communists, reporters, FBI agents, people who work in Hollywood, and anyone else who has stood up to Trump, led by (of course) the Clintons, George Soros, Obama, the Pope and the Rothschilds, claiming that they are guilty not only of a treasonous campaign to destroy the United States, but of being involved, every one of them, in a massive worldwide child pedophilia, rape and murder scheme, as part of their worshipping of Satan.  Within a couple of months, it is asserted, these people will all be hauled off to Guantanamo Bay and executed.

QAnon supporters at a recent Trump Nuremberg-style rally

I can't say with any confidence that this is the furthest into derangement that these people will sink, but it is certainly the most insane specimen of mass wingnut paranoid delusion I have seen in my half century of following the right.  Nevertheless, this is the sort of political Ptolemaism to which Republicans have to resort at this point, to make their leaders out to be the good guys.  I don't imagine they are likely in the near future to reconcile themselves with reality, the way the Church finally did about the heliocentric view of the solar system, but I am extremely concerned with how much farther this mass of delusions can be stretched to cover the ever increasing evidence that they have all been conned by criminals and traitors, and how many of them will be reduced to a state of mindless, violent rage by the inevitable collapse of their mass lunacy.

We've seen that no amount of agitation, racism and hatemongering has at this point driven the right to any more than very minor outbreaks of violence; they are mostly too lazy, old and stupid to really mount any serious disruptions.  I am afraid, however, that the collapse of their lunatic delusions could drive a lot more of them over the edge into the mixture of neo-Confederacy and out and out Nazism that really would pose a threat to this country and the world.  I do not see how these people can continue to hold their lunatic patchwork of crazed beliefs together more than a few more months; as it becomes obvious that Mueller is not in league with Trump, it may prove impossible for them to avoid falling prey to the incitement to violence which is now a standard part of Republican policy.

But Wait! There's More!  Via Digby, I bring you  this chart of absolute insanity claiming to represent all the QAnon conspiracies in on grand place:

I had to import this image into Photoshop and zoom in to read it in all its lunatic detail.  This thing makes the epicycles look like a rational explanation of reality, and yet it is not far off from the basic "understanding" that lies behind the thinking of the people that are running our country.  God save us if the Dems do not take over the House in November.

Your President:  ""It's called flipping and it almost ought to be's not a fair thing."

It ought to be illegal.  Let's be clear here: "flipping" is a mob term for telling the truth to the government.  If the truth is bad for Donald Trump, it should be illegal to say it out loud.

Nothing else to say here; the implication is pretty obvious.

Truth Isn't Truth

It would be the official motto of the Republican party if they didn't already have one:  "Everything for me and to hell with you."

Update:  Donald Trump today:  "“Even if I am telling the truth, that makes me a liar”

You figure out what he is trying to claim there.  It's beyond me.

Chidren of Hate

Those of you who read the Washington Post may have seen an article recently about a small town in Pennsylvania that has been significantly taken over by self-styled Nazis.  I want to recommend that you take the time to examine a photo essay by a photographer named Anthony Karen, documenting one of these families.  I take the liberty of reprinting one of these photos here; there are many more at the link, and their collective effect is far more terrifying.
The experiential and emotional poverty in which these children are raised is truly appalling to me, as is the hatred that fills the gaps left by their parents, who keep breeding more children without the intellectual and moral wherewithal to properly raise them.  I cannot tell how mentally inadequate the parents are; several of the children have been diagnosed as being "autistic;" I wonder in this case if this is not a modern euphemism for mental inadequacy, perhaps resulting from the genetics of the parents.  I do not know what can possibly be done about families like this, but they are bound to represent a severe problem for everyone around them, on into the future.

Unite the Right 2 Takes to the Streets, Hooah!

I guess I will file this report on the great national Unite the Right 2 march that happened in front of the White House this weekend, on the first anniversary of the great Charlottesville riot that did so much to establish Nazis as deserving of a place in our national political life, just to keep up my record.

This event was the beneficiary of an immense amount of publicity from both right wing sources and our mainstream press, so I think it should be indicative of the real strength of the right in the United States.  Well, here it is:
Yup, that's it:  about thirty people in a national march after receiving immense publicity.  Here's a little of the coverage in the local paper:

I want to comment on what this latest in an endless string of humiliating failures by the right means.  First of all, let me make it clear that none of us can deny being stunned in the last couple of years by the sheer number of white people filled with hatred and violence that there are in this country.  But we can take some comfort in the fact that the overwhelming majority of them are too fat, stupid, lazy, old or drunk (or a combination of the same) to do a damned thing to further their hatred.  Yes, they may manage to stagger down to the local polling place to vote every couple of years, and that in itself is a tragedy.  But evidence like this indicates that those who either fear or are praying for a new Civil War are likely to be deeply disappointed in this era's Johnny Rebs.

Bikers For Trump

He's so proud of them...
And yes, this is an actual Trump tweet, minus the red circle and arrow, of course.  How much more blatant can this guy get?
But of course the press will just ignore this tweet, or pretend that Trump just didn't notice the Nazi sign tattooed on the guy's arm.

Q Anon and the Collapse of the Trump World

I've been following the idiotic Q Anon cult almost since it first emerged a few months ago to tie every malicious right wing lie into one unified field theory of lunacy.    All along, I have thought that I should write a post about it, but I just didn't have the patience to deal with its obvious drivel.  There is, however, something I think should be said.

There is, at the center of the Q Anon weltanschauung,  a notion so preposterous that sane people can hardly believe anyone would fall for it, and yet over the last months it has emerged as a more and more important axiom of the whole pack of nonsense.  This is that the entire Mueller "investigation" of Trump is actually (believe it or not) a cover to hide the fact that Trump and Mueller are working together to bring down an evil cabal headed by Hillary Clinton and George Soros.  According to this claim, Mueller has already filed over 28,000 "sealed indictments" of Hillary, Obama and a vast array of other targets of the right's wrath.

"The central claim of the #QAnon conspiracy theory is that President Donald Trump’s Justice Department has filed thousands of sealed indictments against Democratic leaders, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy elites.

All are guilty of a variety of misdeeds, horrific sex crimes, affiliation with the “deep state,” and/or intent to harm the president and his administration.

And when the time is right, Trump will order the indictments unsealed, prompting a massive wave of arrests, with the accused tried in the field and sent to Guantanamo Bay for indefinite detention."*

Now, here is what interests me in all of this:  As more and more information has continually been revealed about Trump's treasonous and corrupt behavior, it has become harder and harder for anyone to maintain a public belief in his innocence.  Unfortunately, another factor is at work here: the more that is revealed about the spectacularly criminal behavior of Trump and the rest of his party, the more his followers are revealed to have been ignorant dupes and suckers, something they will never be able to admit to themselves.  To reconcile all of this requires the construction of ever more elaborate and deranged interpretations of reality; this has finally culminated in the Trump-Mueller theory, certainly one of the most hare-brained interpretations of the facts since the notion that the earth is hollow and we all live inside.
See, some people will believe anything.

Any sane person can clearly see the lunacy of this claim, but at this point that kind of stretching of reality is all the Republicans have to account for the known facts.  So, the question is obvious:  What happens when Mueller starts to really show his cards, and this fantasy collapses?  Certainly, it will not presage a mass acceptance by right wingers of how deluded they were.  The real question is if, by the time this happens, presumably in a few more months, Trump and Republican leaders will have managed to stir the right up into such a rage that there will be widespread violent attempts to start a new civil war, or if, as is more probable, given their past behavior, they just ignore their massive humiliation and march on, ignorant, stupid and filled with hatred as always, ready and willing to serve the Republican master plan to destroy our country.

*This interesting article, written by Mike Rothschild at Daily Dot, explains the gross distortion of the claim about the 28,000 "sealed indictments," if you are interested.

An Economic Prediction

Donald Trump:  "We're on track to hit the highest annual average growth rate in over 13 years and I will say this right now, and I'll say it strongly."

A lie, of course, from the man who has told thousands of them in the last two years..  NBC news has this reply:

"President Barack Obama, whose first election coincided with a debilitating economic collapse, had four quarters of higher growth than this during his presidency. It would tie for the fifth strongest quarter under President George W. Bush and the 13th strongest quarter under President Bill Clinton."

If you go online, you find various accounts, for some reason, of what the quarterly growth rate has been the last decade.  Here is one I found, in the middle of the pack:

I added the lines, at 4% growth and 3.5% growth.  Whatever the exact numbers, you can see that as expected, Trump's grandiose claims that he has produced unique growth are far outside the realm of reality, particularly given constant Republican attempts to sabotage the economy during the Obama administration.

Anyway, here is my prediction:  The 4.1% number that Trump is slinging around is a preliminary estimate.  Anyone who follows these statistics knows that a couple of months later, a real number is published, and if you have followed this issue closely, you will know that the preliminary number has often been tampered with by Republican administrations, at least since Nixon.  I suspect that the revised number will not emerge until after the election, and that it will be substantially lower than Trump's boasting.  By then, of course, the Republicans will have milked this lie dry, and the press, having let him live on the lie, will pretty much ignore the real numbers.

I could be wrong, but that's what I expect.

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt

As the noose tightens around Trump's neck, he and his paid liars are of course resorting over and over again to just denying that what we know is sufficient proof of his criminality.  At this point, if Jesus Christ himself appeared in court to testify against Trump, Republicans would just insist that since his caring for the poor is a Democratic position, anything he says must be disregarded.  So it is important, I think, to consider at what point we can actually say that the case against him is proven.

I have two points to make about the inevitable Republican claims that Trump has not been proven to be a traitor beyond a reasonable doubt.  First of all, that standard is for a jury in a trial; the American people are entitled to form their opinions any way they want.  For Republicans it is just fine to assert all sorts of criminality over Hillary's e-mails, Benghazi or the Pizzagate scandal, even though these absurd smears have been disproven again and again, but it is still absolutely unacceptable to draw any conclusions from over eighty clandestine contacts between the Trump campaign and the Russians, and the blizzard of lies that Republicans have issued to try to deny what obviously happened.  We are far past the point that it is grotesquely unreasonable to deny the collusion between Trump and Putin.

Second, here is something I have not heard overtly discussed, but which I think is very important:  Donald Trump, as President, has immense power, which he uses every day, to frustrate, distort and destroy the investigation against him.  In this case, is it not reasonable that we must apply a far lower standard of proof when we investigate his actions, to compensate for the illegitimate use of his power to free himself from accountability?  Every thing we now know about this sordid affair is a scrap that has escaped the massive power of the Executive and Legislative branches of government to suppress. It is my opinion that, in the case of Trump, the challenge of reasonable doubt has already been far more than met; at this point, it is grossly unreasonable not to admit what is going on.

As of months ago, no reasonable person could believe that Trump is not a traitor.  At this point, the conclusion is so obvious that it takes a deliberate denial of reality to claim otherwise.  That is, of course, what Republicans intend to keep doing, but the rest of us need not fall for their bogus, insincere resort to supposed legalisms to prevent us from admitting the truth.

A Modest Proposal

Most of you, I presume, are familiar with the Yellowstone Caldera, through the numerous documentaries and TV movies about the subject.  For those who are not aware of this geological phenomenon, under Yellowstone National Park lies a massive pool of magma, which when released may well cause an eruption that will dwarf Mount St. Helens, or even Tambora or Krakatoa themselves.  Despite scaremongering, of course, there is no prospect of such a thing happening in the next couple hundred thousand years or so, or that if it did it would be the maximum disaster beloved of horror movies.

Nevertheless, the whole thing has given me an idea, which could well be the only path to salvation that the United States clearly has.  Here is a map showing the possible extent of the damage resulting from a massive eruption of the Yellowstone Caldera:
I ask you to observe one fact which, until the helpful contribution of Green Eagle, has been unexplored:  The devastation wreaked by this event would be almost entirely concentrated in red States.  Yes, we might lose Seattle and Chicago, and a few other areas that we would miss, but really, in the larger scope of things, it would massively realign the balance between rational Americans and crazed, greed maddened, hate filled right wingers.

Anyway, think about it- it just might be worth it, if it's the only hope we have.

Cohen and Trump for Dummies

Cohen wants a pardon.

Trump could just send him a signal that it will happen, but Trump is a belligerent bully with a really psychopathic need for dominance, so he won't do it.

So, Cohen is ratcheting up the pressure, step by step, trying to get Trump to give him what he wants.

Trump is counting on his followers to not give a damn how many prostitutes he had to pay off, or how many of them had abortions, or any other damned thing.

After the shocker about the tapes, we can be pretty sure that what Cohen has revealed so far is only the tip of the iceberg. The only question is whether Trump will be manipulated by other Republicans into pardoning Cohen before Cohen reveals something that really does damage Trump.  Or if there is any way to make Trump supporters ashamed of what they have done, since sucking up to a foreign dictator isn't enough.

We'll see.

Speaker of the House

I have made this comment a few times in other places, but I want to get on the record saying this.

If the Democrats manage to take back the House this November, it is vital not to turn leadership back to the ineffective, scared-of-her-own-shadow Nancy Pelosi.  There is one Congressman above all others who has demonstrated that he intends to to the right thing, and will not back down:  Adam Schiff.

My vote for next speaker of the house is Mr. Schiff, and I don't think there could be a better choice.  Next, let's get rid of that tool Chuck Schumer and make Sherrod Brown the Democratic leader in the Senate.
