Truer Words Were Never Spoken

Rudy Giuliani, on the announcement that he is becoming one of Trump's lawyers:

"I’m going to join the legal team...The country deserves it."

At this point, who could disagree?

“I’m going to ask Mueller, ‘What do you need to wrap it up?’ he said.”

How about a guilty plea to treason?  See if you can work that plea deal out, Rudy.  At this point, I am wondering if there is a thing in the world that they do not regard as a gigantic joke on all the rest of us.  Except for stealing our money to give to the likes of the Koch brothers and the Mercers.  That isn't a joke; it's the only reason they are alive.

Just a Very Minor Point

Call me crazy, and I certainly hate to defend anyone from the Trump administration, but I think a cabinet secretary has a right to fly first class.  Come on, every sleazy businessman and kid of a rich father flies first class; I think it's perfectly reasonable for one of the very highest officials of our government to do the same.

Cohen and Casey- Remembering the Iran Hostage Sabotage

Michael Cohen, sadly only looking like he is being pinched by the long arm of the law.

Most of us have some awareness of the Iran hostage negotiations in 1980, in which the Reagan campaign seems to have sabotaged the release of our hostages until after the election in a blatant specimen of treason which was never punished in any way.  What most people will not remember is the crucial incident in this ugly spectacle of betrayal- a trip by William Casey, Reagan's campaign manager, to Madrid to meet with Iranian mullahs to make the deal to delay the release of the hostages, in return for promises of future sales of weapons to Iran, fulfilled later in Reagan's reign by the sale of 2,000 TOW missiles to the Iranians in another blatantly illegal specimen of treason, which again, being committed by a Republican administration was never punished in any way.

Republicans provided supposed evidence that Casey's trip never happened; only years later was it discovered that the evidence was a lie, and of course the hapless Democrats just let this treachery slide by without consequences.

I think it is very instructive to consider this sordid event, in light of the Trump administration denial of a crucial claim of the Steele dossier, that Michael Cohen was in Prague during the campaign to make a deal with the Russians for them to interfere in the Presidential campaign on behalf of Trump.  A year of the most belligerent denials that Cohen was ever in Prague, then or any other time, was backed up by displaying his passport, which contained no Czech visa stamps.

We now discover, via reporters from the McClatchy news service that this claim is false, and that in fact Cohen was in Prague in 2016, during the campaign, and met with Russian officials and a number of Eastern European hackers:

"WASHINGTON- The Justice Department special counsel has evidence that Donald Trump’s personal lawyer and confidant, Michael Cohen, secretly made a late-summer trip to Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign, according to two sources familiar with the matter."

Cohen seems to have taken a private jet to Germany, and then crossed the border from Germany to the Czech Republic, a crossing that does not require showing a passport under European Union regulations, thus rendering the "evidence" of his passport meaningless.  If the information compiled by this investigation holds up (and there is at present no reason to doubt it) it is a confirmation of one more of the explosive claims of the Steele Dossier, and is virtually smoking gun proof of treason on the part of the Trump campaign.

This incident is strikingly similar to the treachery of the Reagan incident, so I thought it would be interesting to provide this excerpt from a Los Angeles Times article recounting it:

"The Reagan administration and Republicans always denied that they had any back-door negotiations with Ayatollah Khomeini's revolutionary regime during the Iran hostage crisis. Specifically, they denied that Reagan's campaign manager, William J. Casey, traveled surreptitiously to Madrid in the summer of 1980 to meet with a representative of the ayatollah, and to suggest that it might be in Iran's interest to stall the negotiations over the release of the American hostages. Casey allegedly intimated that a Reagan administration would resume arms sales to the Iranians.  These allegations seemed too outrageous, too outlandish to be believed...
...we now know that Casey took time off from his campaign duties sometime in the summer of 1980 to visit Madrid. For "purposes unknown...
...it is now reasonable to conclude that Casey did something. The Iranians dragged out the negotiations over the release of the hostages. President Carter believed these negotiations were nearly successful in late September 1980, but suddenly new demands were made that stalled the talks. Polls showed Carter within single digits of catching Reagan until about 10 days before the election. Carter lost decisively, and the hostages were inexplicably released minutes after Reagan was sworn in as president... In retrospect, this was the beginning of the scandal that broke in 1987, when it became known that the Reagan administration had been exchanging weapons for hostages."

Shortly after this incident, Casey developed a bizarre case of "brain cancer" the main symptoms of which were to render him unable to either speak or write, thereby making it impossible for him to be deposed.  He eventually died, without ever regaining these allegedly lost abilities.

And before moving on, let me just mention that the campaign of Richard Nixon made deals with our Vietnamese partners to prevent progress toward a peace agreement, with the same treasonous intent:

"Nixon’s Vietnam Treachery...Nixon insisted that he had not sabotaged Johnson’s 1968 peace initiative to bring the war in Vietnam to an early conclusion. “My God. I would never do anything to encourage” South Vietnam “not to come to the table,” Nixon told (President Lyndon) Johnson...Now we know Nixon lied. A newfound cache of notes left by H. R. Haldeman, his closest aide, shows that Nixon directed his campaign’s efforts to scuttle the peace talks, which he feared could give his opponent, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, an edge in the 1968 election. On Oct. 22, 1968, he ordered Haldeman to “monkey wrench” the initiative."

In other words, Trump's treasonous action to gain the White House was not an anomaly in Republican politics, but at least the third specimen of clear treason carried out to rig Presidential elections. Three Republican Presidents in the last half century have been illegitimate, elected via a campaign of treason.  And their reigns have caused massive damage to the United States. That is the reality we live with in this nation today.

It must be made clear that Donald Trump is not some sort of diseased growth on the body of Republicanism; his behavior is completely in keeping with the standard operating procedures of this anti-American, terminally corrupt organization.  Only its total elimination can provide hope of our rejoining the ranks of decent nations.

A slight addition to my comments:  It occurred to me that I should have pointed out that there is no evidence in all of our history of a Democratic Presidential candidate ever engaging in treachery that comes even close to these three examples.  One more example to demonstrate the maliciousness of the standard argument that both parties are the same.

Russia and Syria

I am the last person to ever claim that Vladimir Putin is anything but a vicious dictator, who deserves to be put down any way possible, but that does not neutralize the fact that Russia has an urgent interest in seeing to it that no group of Islamic fanatics, like ISIS, takes control of Syria.

Here's a map of the northern Middle East and southern Russia.  Please note that the distance between Syria and Russia is, at the narrowest point, only about 250 miles.  That is a distance that could be covered in less than half an hour by a fighter jet, or less than four hours on a straight freeway drive, if a freeway existed there.

I ask anyone to consider what the United States would do if a genocidal Islamic state arose 250 miles into Mexico; which is to say, around Mazatlan.  Do you think we would not be bombing the whole area into oblivion, regardless of the civilian "collateral damage?" After all, we killed a million civilians in Iraq just a few years ago, for nothing.  And please consider this question in light of the fact that the United States has, for over a century, maintained vicious dictators throughout central and South America; dictators that have been every bit as brutal as any Islamic ruler, and that our country has done this in the face of far less threat than Russia faces from Islamic extremism.  Many of these countries posed no danger to anyone except American corporations, before we destroyed their governments.  This reached a height of abomination in the fifties, when the Eisenhower administration essentially turned foreign policy over to two brothers who were on the board of the United Fruit Company, and who used their positions to see to it that no Central American country ever acted in the interest of its own people, and during the Reagan administration, when the Republican President illegally financed an army of drug gangs to force a legitimately elected government from power; these monstrous interventions continue to produce disastrous effects for our own country today.

No matter how vicious Putin may be, the reality remains that Russia cannot tolerate a fanatical, genocidal government almost on their border.  We would do well to keep that in mind as we see how Trump's current temper tantrum plays itself out.

Comey

Just to get things clear before the orgy of praise directed toward James Comey which is coming this week, here is the truth about Comey.

James Comey is a right wing hatchet man, who, in by far the most important act of his pathetic life, stabbed Hillary Clinton in the back in an absolutely gratuitous raising of an issue that he knew was a total lie, right before the election, and in the process did more than any single person, Putin included, to put Trump in office.

This was a deliberate, knowing act of treachery toward our country which is proving to be more damaging than almost any other single act of a government official since Robert E. Lee decided to turn traitor.

Then, after Trump, in true gangland fashion, rewarded Comey's act by firing Comey and humiliating him in public, Comey decided to take his revenge, not for the damage Trump was doing to the country, but for the personal insult he suffered.  That is not the act of a patriot; it is the act of a mobbed up criminal little different than Trump.

Be careful who we invite into our house.  Great that he is spilling the beans on his corrupt boss Trump, but don't be fooled into thinking that this act makes Comey a patriot, or anything else besides the wretched Republican tool he is.

I Thought He Was Going To Make Everything Better

Donald Trump yesterday:

"Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War."

I thought he said he was the greatest negotiator on earth and he was going to make everything better.  I thought he said he was so good at foreign policy that he could handle everything- it would be easy for him.  I thought he said he was going to have the greatest relationship with Russia.  What happened?

Oh, and I see that the Congressional Budget Office just announced that under his tax plan, the national debt will equal the entire GDP by 2028.  At which point the Republican party will be screaming to do away with Social Security and Medicare.

How can any person on earth take this vicious buffoon seriously for a second?  And how can his party and a large part of the mainstream press go on pretending that this is normal?  How can he be allowed to stay in office for a day?

Ryan Runs in Panic

One of the great Republican liars and tools of the rich is running for cover now that it appears that he is about to earn at least a minute fraction of the consequences of his corrupt behavior.

As the Washington Post reports in a headline today:

"Ryan to depart Congress with a legacy of expanded spending and immense deficits"

Of course, the Washington Post reports this fact as a failure on Ryan's part, when in fact it was his greatest success.  He was in Congress for the same reason that all Republicans are there: to rob the nation blind and give the money to their sociopathic rich backers.  And he succeeded just great at that.

And of course, the mainstream press played along like the lap dogs they are, consistently portraying his transparent lies about the economy and schemes to bankrupt us all as the product of a patriotic and brilliant thinker.

Well, the inevitable happened, I guess: the train stopped a couple of stations short of the sort of total dictatorship which would have enabled Ryan to complete his malignant vision for the country.  And in fury at his failure to precipitate the national apocalypse they have been trained to want, they were about to show him what Republican loyalty really means when the chips are down.  Ryan and his fellows at the top of the Republican trash heap spent decades building a base of violent voters, filled with hatred and greed, and now, deprived of their ultimate armageddon through having been swindled one time too many by their rich masters, they were about to turn on him.  So like the coward he so clearly always was, he's running for cover.  Well, good riddance, for as long as he stays in his hole.  You'd have to be a fool to think that he isn't already preparing for a Nixonian return the second he thinks he can get away with it.

Stop Obsessing, You Stupid People!

Here's an article in the Washington Post today, by some guy named Alan Sloan, who the Post describes as follows:

"Allan Sloan is a columnist for The Washington Post. He is a seven-time winner of the Loeb Award, business journalism's highest honor."

The Loeb Award!  A seven time winner!  What sort of profound thinking gets you seven of these things?  Well, here's a sample:

"Stop obsessing about the yo-yo stock market...

Enough with the stock market, already!

If you’re trying to make sense of the market, good luck to you. I know that stock market stories are one of the staples of business news — and these days, of general news, as well — and every market effect is supposed to have a rational, understandable cause.

But you know what, folks? That’s just not how the world actually works."

Any idiot can see that, after years of slow growth under the last Democratic President, the current Republicans only took a year to send it into an almost incomprehensible instability, which could cause a collapse any time.  But you little guys out there, your duty is to ignore all of that and pretend that it's all perfectly normal, like everything else the Republicans are up to today.  Just shut up and get back to work, or no work as the case may be.  Ignore the signs and keep pumping the little money you have into the market; i.e. into the pockets of thieves on Wall Street.  It's all just too complicated for you to understand anyway.  Stop paying attention, and let the rich guys do their thing!

That's what gets you seven "Loeb Awards," and a position writing opinion pieces for the Washington Post.  Okay?  I mean, what did you expect?

Minus 576

Funny old age we live in, huh, when the President of the United States can cause the Dow Jones average to lose close to 600 points in a single day, and the news media hardly bother mentioning it.  Until Trump moved in, this would have been a cataclysm that would have stunned the country, and brought forth screams for impeachment of a Democratic President, without even considering the several times this has happened in recent months, due to Trump's behavior.  But now?  The press is just averting its gaze, and pretending that it will all go away.

Nobody in the mainstream media seems willing to point out that, even in the absence of a total collapse, this kind of volatility is a frightening sign of the kind of instability that could cause even minor events to precipitate massive economic damage.  Just on the basis of pure statistical analysis, this should be seen as a deeply disturbing phenomenon.  Instead, it is simply being ignored, by the same mainstream press and Republican party that spent years screaming about Benghazi and Hillary's e-mails, scandals that every single one of them knew to be totally false.

I repeat Green Eagle's First Maxim:  The Democrats could beat the Republican party into historical oblivion without hardly trying; what they cannot do is beat the Republicans and the press working together.

Caravan

"President Trump, who claimed a "crisis" forced him to order National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, said Thursday that a border-bound caravan of some 1,000 migrants fleeing violence in Central America had broken up inside Mexico."

Darn!  I was really hoping to head down to the border to get a look at that.
I just hope the camels are all okay.

I Love a Parade

So, I remember a story from the later years of the Vietnam war, when the United States was getting its rear end kicked by the Vietnamese:  A fair number of people, with a mixture of sarcasm and seriousness, said that we should just declare victory and come home, counting on the American people, or at least the ones who voted Republican, to gladly accept a fairy tale for reality.

I'm hearing lately what used to be called a "trial balloon" (don't hear that phrase much anymore, in a country whose leader's every remark is some kind of mentally deranged boast likely to disappear within hours) that this is exactly what Trump is planning to do in Syria:  Just declare that ISIS doesn't exist any more, and that all of the years of work by so many countries, united in a coalition put together by Barack Obama, was actually the result of an invisible stroke of military genius on the part of a man who knows more about war than all the generals combined.  And of course, the Republican base, which still believes Hillary was raping kids in a pizza parlor, will buy it without question.

Two great results from this plan.  First of all, it involves the United States abandoning Syria to the Russians, leaving Putin free to do whatever he wants there, and presumably in Iraq, Iran and Lebanon too; i.e. another treasonous payoff to the guy who put Trump in the White House.

And second, then we can have Trump's Grand Victory Parade!!!!! Another promise to improve the lives of ordinary Americans kept!  Oh boy, here it comes!  Next, Paraguay or San Marino or maybe California is going to pay for the wall!

Subject or Target?

So Donald Trump is rejoicing, at least in public, over being merely a "subject," rather than a "target" of a federal criminal investigation, pretending (after all the lawsuits he has been involved in, he must know better," that this is a good thing, despite his being the first President in history to rise (or sink) to this level.

Well, in all the talk I have now heard about the difference between the two, I have heard one persuasive remark, which is this:  Prosecutors who have handled this sort of case know perfectly well that the minute someone is identified as a "target" of their investigations, that person clams up, and from that point on there is zero hope of any sort of cooperation or willing testimony from them.  Mueller apparently still hopes to induce the egomaniac Trump to sit down for a face to face interview, which very likely will be the biggest mistake Trump ever made, and Mueller knows that if he lays all his cards on the table, Trump will run for the hills- perhaps the hills just outside of Moscow, if any exist. So he'll take what he can get now, and then we'll see what he really has, after Trump has a good chance to perjure himself but good.

Wishful thinking on my part?  Maybe, because I am not a lawyer, let alone a federal prosecutor, but there is a certain amount of sense in this explanation.

Update:  From the Washington Post this morning:

"The president has privately expressed relief at the description of his legal status, which has increased his determination to agree to a special counsel interview, the people said."

This Trump guy is as easy to manipulate as it is to trick your dog into going for a walk.  World's greatest negotiator, indeed.

Wingnut Wrapup

A lot of disgusting nonsense to get to these days, so let's just dig in with what is likely to be the most degraded, sickening response to the teenagers working to control guns, of course coming from the legendary Stupidest Man On The Internet, and holder of a Trump administration press pass, Jim Hoft:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "FLASHBACK: Hitler Also Used Children to Promote Gun Control:"

Yup, he went there, right in the headline.  And here is the picture Jim used:

I spent some time searching for details about this picture and guess what?  There seems to be no record of the occasion it was taken, and certainly not a reason in the world to think that it involved guns.  Surprise, surprise.

"Today’s gun control and confiscation rally was nothing new. Nazis and leftists have been using children for decades in their attempts to take guns away from law abiding citizens. Here’s a history lesson for young adults in America – Hitler’s regime took away guns from people in Germany"

A complete lie, of course, except for taking guns away from Jews.  Other than that, Hitler considerably loosened German gun restrictions

Hitler said – “These boys and girls enter our organizations [at] ten years of age, and often for the first time get a little fresh air; after four years of the Young Folk they go on to the Hitler Youth, where we have them for another four years . . . And even if they are still not complete National Socialists, they go to Labor Service and are smoothed out there for another six, seven months . . . And whatever class consciousness or social status might still be left . . . the Wehrmacht [German armed forces] will take care of that.”

What this has to do with the self-organized marches against guns, who knows?

"The perennial gun-control debate in America did not begin here. The same arguments for and against were made in the 1920s in the chaos of Germany’s Weimar Republic, which opted for gun registration. "

The Weimar Republic was, of course, the opposite of the Nazis, first of all, and second, the Weimar Republic absolutely did not "opt for gun registration."  That was part of the surrender terms forced on the Germans at the end of World War I, and was in fact relaxed under the Weimar Republic in the late 1920's.

" It’s reported that when Hitler signed gun control legislation he surrounded himself with children as a backdrop"

Reported by whom, nobody seems to know.  And since he never "signed gun control legislation," the question is pretty much meaningless anyway, huh?

"When former President Barack Obama signed executive orders on gun control he too surrounded himself with children"

Oh, Obama- just like Hitler.  I see:

I can't say I remember Obama ending his administration by shooting himself in the head in the smoking ruins of his capital city, after starting a war that killed fifty million people, but then I guess no analogy can be perfect, right?
"Leftists and Nazis can’t take away guns from law abiding citizens without using children as a backdrop! Today’s rally using children was another grotesque display reminescent of Nazi Germany."

So, to sum things up, no evidence of any kind that Hitler used children to promote gun control (which, incidentally he never did promote, other than taking guns away from Jews,) and modern kids who fight the NRA are nothing but Nazis.  And so is Obama.  Got that straight?  Good, let's move on then, first of all to something that I believe perfectly captures the degradation of the right in this country, and its utter contempt for both truth and decency.

Emma Gonzalez- you know her.  She's the Parkland student with the short hair who has become the number one symbol of the new movement in this country to fight back against the NRA and the corruption that allows rich corporations to force the country to run the way they want it to, with no regard for the harm they do.  Well, here is a picture of Emma Gonzales which is flying around the right wing web the last few days, showing her ripping up a copy of the Constitution.  Many of you have probably seen this by now, but it certainly represents an example of right wing behavior that has earned a place of honor here at Wingnut Wrapup. Take that, liberals!

One problem though:  here is the real picture, from an article at the Teen Vogue website:

Apparently, the phony picture is getting far more coverage around the web than the real one is.  There is just no bottom to the depravity of the right, which knows its positions are wrong, and just doesn't care.  Well, I guess we all knew that, so let's just move on.

Matt  Vespa, Town Hall:  "Anti-Gun Liberals Devolve Into A Cacophony Of Nonsense As They Can't Explain What An Assault Rifle Is"

If you don't know how to build a bomb, you have no right to the opinion that bombing people is bad.  You have to be so obsessed with guns that you know every detail about them before you have a right to say a word about the subject.

Matt Vespa:  "Surprise, Surprise: March For Our Lives Once Again Shows Why The Left Can’t Be Trusted On Gun Control"

Because you can't trust anyone that actually wants to deal with the problem. If they don't take money from the NRA, they ought to keep their mouths shut.

Timothy Meads, Town Hall:  "Ingraham: 'This Is Like Christmas for Democrats'

Sorry, guys.  Christmas is like Christmas for Democrats.  This is like the liberation of Poland.

Kevin McCullough, Town Hall:  "The Stupidity of the 'March For Our Lives'

You know what, Kevin?  At this point, I'll take stupid but good hearted over smart but evil.  And that doesn't even describe you and the people you write for, who are stupid and evil at the same time.

Marty Gottesfield, Red State:  "I Blame The Teachers, Not The Guns...I blame the teachers for the vast majority of school shootings in the U.S. They run the schools and in many cases they are the worst bullies of all."

Of course you do, Marty.  You can get a tax cut from cutting teachers' pay, but you can't get a dime out of the gun manufacturers, except by repeating their lies in public.  Which you do.

Claudia Rosett, PJ Media: "John Bolton: 'A Reagan Realist' and a Brilliant Choice...He will make America safer."

After the nuclear war.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "National Disgrace: Democrats, Not Republicans, Passed Mitch McConnell’s Bloated Omnibus Bill"

Despite the fact that Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House.  IT'S THE DEMOCRATS' FAULT I TELL YOU!!!!!

Awr Hawkins, Breitbart:  "LEFTIST TOTALITARIANS ATTACK"

This is because some liberals criticised a rapper for taking money to make a commercial for the NRA.  What a relief; I thought the battle of Stalingrad had started up again.

Awr Hawkins, Breitbart:  "REPORT: MARCH AGAINST GUNS ATTENDANCE LESS THAN HALF EXPECTED...A report indicates attendance at Saturday’s student march for gun control was approximately 200,000, which is less than half of the expected crowd size."

Well, just an out and out lie.  How surprising, huh?  The actual number is reported as somewhere around 800,000 to 1,000,000 in Washington alone, plus hundreds of thousands in other cities, and Green Eagle, who has about forty years experience of judging crowd sizes agrees.  Oh well, what do you expect from right wingers, who routinely claim the size of their own marches is about ten times the real number?

Awr Hawkins, Breitbart:  "Hogg Mocked for ‘Nazi Salute’

That would be David Hogg, the Parkland student who has been subjected to an avalanche of right wing abuse for daring to not want to be shot to protect gun profits.  Here is the picture that has aroused wingnut ire:

The first time in known history when someone gave a Nazi salute with a closed fist, but close enough for right wingers.  By the way, I thought they loved Nazis over at Breitbart, so why the fit?

Julie Kelly, The Federalist:  "Successful Climate Pressure Tactics Paved The Way For Gun Control Bullying"

Tell the truth about one thing, and pretty soon you want to tell the truth about other things too.  It's just some sort of infectious disease.

Alex Jones:  "[W]e are then treated to a half-a-million young people...marching to declare that they would confiscate all of our guns and kill anyone that did not turn them in. We’ve got the signs, we’ve got the speeches, we’ve got videos from around the country, not just in D.C., with people running for office, for the office of sheriff and other offices saying, “Sure, you’re not going to turn your guns in? We’re going to kill you."

Young people marching to kill!!!  And here I thought that they were marching to not be killed.  But millions will listen to people like Alex and believe what they say, which right now is a worse problem than guns.

Todd Royal, American Thinker:  "On Iran, the USA Is in Big Trouble...Here's sincerely hoping it doesn't come to total war."

Come on, guy, at least show a shred of honesty.  You are praying for war with Iran every single day.

Monica Showalter, American Thinker:  "On 60 Minutes, Stormy Daniels blew her credibility"

How much "credibility" does a prostitute have?  I mean, she's got more than Donald Trump, who has told 2200 documented lies in a little over a year, but that doesn't amount to much, does it?

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "Addressing the Weak Arguments Against Re-Inserting a Citizenship Question into the US Census Are Weak"

Well, you're right there, Guy, except maybe for that thing about what it says in the Constitution about counting everyone, citizen or not.  But then that sort of thing never matters when the Constitution stands in the way of right wingers seizing power.

Streiff, Red State:  "Debbie Wasserman Schultz and “Stolen Valor” Blumenthal Rip Off Chris Rock’s Gun Violence Idea...You can’t make this stuff up"

I don't have a clue what Chris Rock's idea is, but I do like the notion that it is ripping someone off to go along with an idea they had, if it is not dictated by the party hierarchy and rich donors.

John Hawkins, PJ Media:  "The Ignorant Parkland Kids Don't Speak for Their Dead Classmates...Taking advantage of your dead classmates to get your 15 minutes of fame is disgusting."

But of course, maggots like John Hawkins taking money from the NRA and the Koch brothers to tell their lies about everything is not disgusting- it's the American way.

World Net Daily:  "Bill, Hillary both tied to sex-slaves 'cult'

It will just never stop.  Someone with the same name as someone who knew someone who was arrested for manipulating some women into having sex with him, once contributed to Bill's campaign, many years ago.  That's it.  I bet that has you fuming with indignation, huh?

Forgotten Heroes of Conservatism- Chapter Four: Father Charles Coughlin

With Father Charles Coughlin, I will complete the part of this series devoted to early right wing political figures who came from a religious background.  There are a number of others I might deal with, but I think by the end of this chapter, I will have made my point.  Coughlin is, of course, nowhere near as forgotten as figures like Billy James Hargis or Gerald L. K. Smith- many will remember him from a couple of lines in their high school civics classes- but he is a sufficiently important figure that he will get his own treatment here.
Father Charles Coughlin

Let me begin with some bare facts, from the Wikipedia entry for Coughlin:

"Charles Edward Coughlin was a controversial Canadian-American Roman Catholic priest based in the United States near Detroit at Royal Oak, Michigan's National Shrine of the Little Flower church. Commonly known as Father Coughlin, he was one of the first political leaders to use radio to reach a mass audience, as up to thirty million listeners tuned to his weekly broadcasts during the 1930s. He was forced off the air in 1939."

Before going on, I want to take a moment to speak about the rise of religious radio broadcasting in the Unites States.

Because of government restrictions during World War I, radio broadcasting remained little more than a curiosity until 1919 or so, when commercial broadcasting really took off.  It was a very short time until figures on the religious right realized what they could do with this medium; the first significant religious broadcaster, Aimee Semple McPherson first went on the radio in 1922, and owned her own station by 1923.  This, it must be noted, was in a country where the first broadcast network, NBC, was not created until 1926.  So, from essentially the very beginning of radio, Evangelical Christians and the forerunners of today's "megachurches" were exploiting broadcast media; nothing comparable on the left has ever existed.

Coughlin's radio exposure resulted in a massive following, as shown by his ability to draw huge crowds in the nineteen thirties; although he was not alone in this.  A number of other right wing personalities were also speaking to audiences in the tens of thousands at that time, ranging from characters like those I have already covered, to out and out crackpots like Alfred Lawson, the creator of Lawsonomy, perhaps the most ludicrous pseudoscientific doctrine ever known.

"Coughlin began his radio career in 1926.  His broadcasts were mainly religious in character at the time, many of them incidentally involving attacks on the KKK, which carried out a widespread anti-Catholic hate campaign during the late 1920's.  After the onset of the depression, Coughlin began to speak more and more about political issues.

Early in his radio career, Coughlin was a vocal supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal. By 1934 he had become a harsh critic of Roosevelt...In 1934 he established a new political organization called the National Union for Social Justice...The membership ran into the millions.

After hinting at attacks on Jewish bankers, Coughlin began to use his radio program to issue antisemitic commentary. In the late 1930s he approvingly supported some of the fascist policies of Adolf Hitler and of Benito Mussolini, and of Emperor Hirohito of Japan. The broadcasts have been called "a variation of the Fascist agenda applied to American culture". His chief topics were political and economic rather than religious, with his slogan being "Social Justice", initially in support of, and later opposing, the New Deal. Many American bishops as well as the Vatican wanted him silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in Europe in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination through the mail of his newspaper, Social Justice."

Here is a sample, for those who are interested, of Coughlin in action.  I think the influence on Coughlin is clear.  Note that, due to it offensive character, You Tube would not allow it to be directly embedded, so you will have to click on the rectangle here, and then click again before You Tube will allow you to see it:

I want to continue with an excerpt from an excellent article on Coughlin from the U. S. Holocaust Museum:

"Once president, however, Roosevelt appeared to ignore Coughlin's contribution to getting him elected, and slowly distanced his administration from Coughlin's rough-hewn populism...When he realized that he was not going to play a key role in Roosevelt's cabinet, however, Coughlin felt betrayed, and, after several attempts to get the President to notice him, turned on Roosevelt. By the end of 1935, Coughlin used his radio program to attack both the President and the New Deal.

After his split with Roosevelt and with the rise of National Socialism and Fascism in Europe, however, he attacked Jews explicitly in his broadcasts. Some historians attribute this change to Coughlin taking advantage of rising antisemitism around the world in order to keep himself relevant. Based on his speeches, writings, and associations, however, he appears to have had significant antisemitic sentiment throughout his career.

For years, Coughlin had publicly derided “international bankers,” a phrase that most of his listeners understood to mean Jewish bankers. In the days and weeks after Kristallnacht, Coughlin defended the state-sponsored violence of the Nazi regime, arguing that Kristallnacht was justified as retaliation for Jewish persecution of Christians."

As war approached, Coughlin's politics shifted further toward the extreme right. He promoted fascist dictatorship and authoritarian government as the only cure to the ills of democracy and capitalism. He associated with fascist leaders and known antisemitic thinkers in Great Britain and the United States"

These included Henry Ford, Oswald Mosley, Hillaire Belloc, Ezra Pound and other notorious haters.  This culminated in 1938, with the creation of the Christian Front, which claimed it was going to defend the country against Jews and Communists.

After the start of World War II, a combination of anti-German sentiment and government action to put a stop to his agitating for Nazi Germany, pretty much ended his effective role; however he continued to publish his magazine, "Social Justice," and never abandoned his fascist leanings.  Some years after the war ended, it was revealed that, after having his financing from the Catholic Church cut off, Coughlin was the recipient of direct financial aid from the Nazi government.

A couple of issues of Coughlin's publication, "Social Justice"

Eventually, as is typical with right wingers, Coughlin descended to impotent threats of gun violence to get his way:

Most of this, as I have said, is much better known than the history of many other characters that I am writing about, and I am sure that many readers of this material will be familiar, at least in outline, with Coughlin's career.  I am including him to raise a couple of issues:

First is the involvement of a segment of the Catholic hierarchy with the Evangelical movement, which has a long history of anti-Catholic agitating, is puzzling.  It is generally assumed today that this is the result of their common interest in suppressing abortion, and that it is a fairly recent phenomenon.  Coughlin demonstrates that this is not the case; this connection existed before abortion was legalized and became a right wing cause; in fact, as one sees in right wingers today, who they hated was more important to them than what they supposedly believed in, and that included any liberals who asked them to participate in government for the common good, extending even to FDR, who had just saved the country from total collapse.

Second, I want to again mention how quickly the right took advantage of the new communication technology of radio, aided in significant part by churches, which had an ability to raise the sort of money it took to establish and operate a radio station.  Nothing like this was possible for the left which, in any event, found this kind of mass propagandizing abhorrent, even if they could have afforded it.  Since the rise of characters like Rush Limbaugh, we've heard what failures liberals are at putting together this sort of communications infrastructure; it is important to remember that conservatives have had a decades-long head start, a long standing contempt for the truth, and a source of massive funding that liberals could never match.

Old Guy Speaks Up at Gun March

“One of my best friends was killed in gun violence right around here, so it’s important to me.”

It's All About Him

I want to clarify a point I tried to make yesterday about Trump's appointments of Joseph DiGenova, John Bolton and Larry Kudlow.

What is paramount to remember is, it's all about him.  It has nothing to do with the good of the country, or really anyone else.  Trump is a person whose ego is so deformed that he can not see nor comprehend anything except as it relates to himself.  Given this as an obvious fact, here is what I make of these changes.

First, DiGenova. This guy is not an attorney in any meaningful sense of the term; he is a vicious, hate filled liar who has honed his craft spreading smears for decades on Fox News.  The fact that Trump has fired his real head lawyer and replaced him with DiGenova shows that Trump knows that he is guilty as charged, and is now switching from a legal defense strategy to one intended to destroy his opponents.  Most of us have heard of the legal concept of "consciousness of guilt."  That consciousness is written all over this action.

Next, John Bolton.  We all know that Trump's ultimate dirty strategy to evade responsibility for his criminality is to start a war.  I am sure that Trump believes that the country would never tolerate replacing a President during wartime, even if the war was deliberately started for personal benefit by the President himself.  And he very well may be right; obviously Bush and Cheney got away with pretty much the same thing, with no consequences.  So, he is sweeping the deck of people who might oppose a war, and bringing in someone who has hungered all his life for the opportunity to start one.

And Larry Kudlow: again we  are dealing with someone who is not really what he is passed off as.  Kudlow is not an economist; he is a propagandist who has spent decades telling lies about supply side economics.  Trump knows what he is guilty of, and knows that his time at the helm may be limited, so he is bringing on to the team someone whose life work has been to steer as much of the nation's wealth as possible into the pockets of people like Trump.  He has to pull out all the stops at this point, to turn his office to his own personal benefit, because he may not get many more chances.

And one final comment:  Trump seems to be starting a trade war.  Trump is basically in the real estate and hotel business. However much damage a trade war might do, hotels, condos and resorts are not really involved in international trade, so their owners will not be significantly impacted by interfering with the structure of worldwide commerce.  He doesn't care what damage he does to Boeing, or California winemakers, or anyone else, as long as it doesn't hurt him personally.

So, we may be entering an end stage here; a time which pits the President of the United States against everyone else on earth, foreign or domestic, and devil take the hindmost.  That will truly represent a new turn in world events, and one which even the most optimistic will have trouble seeing as leading to anything good.

Wingnut Wrapup

You will observe below a strange reluctance on the part of wingnuts to have anything to do with either the Texas white terrorists or the clear evidence of Trump's crimes and treason.  Wonder why that might be.  Anyway, here is what they are obsessing about:

Mark Davis, Town Hall:  "John Bolton: The Wisdom of This Choice Is Made Clear in the Panic of Liberals"

Because starting a meaningless war or killing a few million innocent civilians is a wonderful thing if it pisses liberals off.  We all know this guy is a certifiable lunatic, but since he scares liberals (or any other sane people) he's just who wingnuts want running the country.

Pat Buchanan, Town Hall:  "Will the Deep State Break Trump?"

It might if it existed.  Since it has as much real existence as Saruman, probably not.  So we'll just have to go on hoping that someone else breaks him, before he starts a world war or causes a depression.

David Harsanyi, Town Hall:  "The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica 'Scandal' Is a Nothingburger"

They're all nothingburgers!  Treason is a nothingburger! Gross, open corruption is a nothingburger!  Obstruction of justice is a nothingburger!  Of course, Benghazi or Hillary's e-mails?  Throw them in jail!  Because it's all okay if Republicans do it, but it's a hanging offense for Democrats even if Republicans just made it up.  Didn't you ever read the Constitution?  That's what the founding fathers said.  Right after they insisted that everyone has a right to walk around in public with an AR-15.

Jack Dunphy, PJ Media:  "Why I Can't Defend Minneapolis Police Officer Mohamed Noor...I often use this space to defend – or at least explain – the actions of police officers. Not today."

Couldn't have anything to do with his name or his religion, could it, Jack?

Thomas Lifson, American Thinker:  "Bombshell reveal: A grand jury already is hearing evidence on DOJ and FBI scandals"

I would never suggest you actually read this article; I bet it won't surprise you that there is not one thing in it that actually demonstrates that this grand jury exists.  Lifson manages to twist a couple of generic remarks that have nothing to do with this alleged investigation, in order to lie to his ignorant readers, but that's all he has.  Enough for him to construct an elaborate fiction, however, which right wingers will buy without a second thought.

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Chief of Staff John Kelly is on the Hunt For a White House Leaker"

I.e. the one who told the story about Trump being warned not to congratulate Putin on stealing an election.  "Leaker," in this case, as always with the Trump administration, meaning "somebody who told the truth."

Matt Vespa, Town Hall:  "Teacher Who Trashed Military As Society's Lowest Of The Low Is Fired"

Whereas, President who trashed the military, the FBI, the national intelligence services, the Justice Department and every Democrat on earth gets cheered at rallies.

Lauretta Brown, Town Hall:  "Dem Caucus Finally Gets Behind Pro-life Dem After He Wins Primary: 'We're a Big Tent Party'

No concern by Lauretta over the fact that, in the same district, the Republicans chose an open Nazi to run as their candidate.  Here he is, proudly speaking in front of a neo-Nazi flag:
That's fine.  Democrats refusing to conform in every detail to the Republican caricature of them- intolerable.

Terry Jeffrey, Town Hall:  "Too High a Price for Republican Leaders"

And what would that price be?  Supporting a traitor in the White House?  Collaborating to steal six trillion dollars from the American people on behalf of their sociopathic campaign backers?  Lying about every damned thing on earth?  No:

"They will force you to pay taxes to the federal government and then turn around and hand some of that tax money -- as well as some money they will borrow from your grandkids -- to a group they have rightly accused of evil acts."

Of course, they accuse every decent thing the government ever tries to do as an evil act, and accuse every decent impulse that any human being on earth has as an evil impulse, because everything that does not enrich their backers is evil to them.  Choose your poison, I guess: health care for the poor (the evil act in question here) or another trillion for the Koch brothers.

Joe Cunningham, Red State:  "Liberals Are Going To Learn The Wrong Lesson From Conor Lamb’s Victory"

Liberals are going to stupidly believe that winning elections means they have a mandate to carry out their plans, when what it really means is that they should cave in to whatever the Republicans want.  I mean, that's what they are supposed to do no matter what happens, huh?

"at least Donald Trump knows how to connect to voters’ beliefs in key areas."

As proven by his inability to lead his party to victory in any election not rigged by the Russians.

Fred T, Red State:  "Florida Man Shoots Wife, Stabs Children, Burns House Down, Blames ‘White Devils’, Shouts ‘Allah Akbar’

Not one word today about "Texas Right Wing White Man sets off five bombs, kills two."  I guess you have to write about what you get paid to write about.  If you're a right winger, anyway.

Tom Knighton, PJ Media:  "New York Times Takes 50 on $135K Trip on Private Jet to Sound Alarm on Climate Change...Not the Onion."

Apparently the people over at PJ Media think trying to deal with climate change is a joke.

Nicholas Ballasy, PJ Media:  "Michael Moore to Dems: 'Never Forget' You're 'Electing the Jury for Impeachment'

God, wouldn't that be a great thing.

Susan Goldberg, PJ Media:  "The Real Reason Toys R Us Is Closing That No One Wants to Talk About: Birthrates"

Another malignant right wing lie.  The real reason is that it was bought by a pack of vulture captalists that stripped it of every penny of value that it had and left it to die.  The same reason Sears and a thousand other companies have gone under the last couple of decades: the gargantuan greed of rich sociopaths.  But better to blame Millennials for not having babies.

David Solway, PJ Media:  "'Social Justice' Is About Anything but Justice...It’s part of a policy of wealth redistribution."

Listen, David, in a country where 43 people own as much wealth as the bottom 50% of the population, wealth redistribution is justice.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "More Leftist Fraud: NOAA Fudged Temperature Data to Delude Public on Global Warming Scam...These climate fraudsters should be jailed for life or sent to northern Alaska with only a sled dog and an axe....Real Climate Science reported..."

I think we can stop right there.  There is a highly respected and multi-award winning website titled "Climate Science."   RealClimate Science.com is a phony website designed to gull the suckers out there by trying to pretend it's the legitimate website, and full of the usual right wing lies about climate change.  It is funded by dark corporate money, much of it believed to come from the Koch brothers.

Wes Vernon, Renew America:  "Is California worthy of the United States?  We fought a Civil War to force rebellious states to remain in the Union. Has anyone ever contemplated the possibility that at some point there may be movement to eject rebellious states out of the United States, to leave – with or without their agreement to leave?"

Go ahead, make our day.  Give up one eighth of the American economy and the United States' major source of food and technological development.  Give up the tax money extorted from the citizens of California which is used to keep virtually every red State in the country from going under.  See where it gets you.

Sher Zieve, Renew America:  "How is conducting an investigation based upon fake evidence legal?"

I don't know, Sher...maybe you should ask the people that ran the Benghazi and Hillary e-mails "investigations."

Rev. Austin Miles, Renew America:  "New portrait of Trump driving liberals mad"

I'm not going to bother to show this idiotic portrait here, but I would like to point out that like every other liberal, I never knew this piece of junk existed.  I just wanted to point out once again how obsessed wingnuts are with "driving liberals mad."  Naturally, Rev. Miles failed to mention a single liberal driven mad, or who has even ever seen it.

Oh, to hell with it, you deserve a treat for reading this garbage.  Here it is:
Looks like he's been chewing on that flag there.  Reverend Miles reacts to this painting:

"I personally felt a lump in my own throat when seeing it, for the gratitude felt for Mr. Trump for putting his own wealthy life on hold to dive into the mess America has become due to a faulty steering wheel which he will fix. Embrace this portrait with your eyes and THINK. How fortunate that God sent him to us."

Well, Reverend, ignoring for the moment the fact that Trump didn't put his own wealthy life on hold for one second, and that he is doing nothing except making our American mess worse, let's just deal with what a crude insult you are directing toward your God to suggest that it was he, instead of a party of hate and greed filled humans, that brought us this nauseating excuse for a President.

John Dale Dunn, American Thinker:  "The Great Victor Davis Hanson Takes On World War II"

Too late, Victor.  It's been over for 73 years.  Maybe we should hear your "take" on World War III, snce the President you love is working so hard to start it.

Christopher Chantrill, American Thinker:  "Let's Call Liberal Activists 'Regime Hate Squads'

Hey, Christopher, how about if we call Conservative activists "traitors."  At least we'll be pretty much telling the truth there.

Lloyd Marcus, American Thinker:  "Homeschooling: The Best Hope for America's Future"

Hey, Lloyd, how about that homeschooled guy in Texas who just blew himself up in a car?  Maybe if we could get a lot more homeschooled people to edit themselves out of the gene pool like that, you would be right.

And let me just make a point here:  It is the responsibility of everyone in a democracy to see that every child has an opportunity to get a good education, not just their own children.  That can only be accomplished through adequate funding of our public education system, something which no conservative on earth supports, since conservatism consists, in the end, of nothing but greed.  And people like Lloyd are particularly against that notion, since very few educated people fall for the hateful ideology which is all that the Republican party has to offer.

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Fox analyst Ralph Peters quits, cites network as 'propaganda machine'...Peters is an idiot."

Nothing like a well-reasoned argument.  Well, at least Ralph Peters appears to be able to read and write, which places him a notch above the current resident in the White House.

Gabrielle Okun, Daily Caller:  "Brazilian Women Hunger For White American Sperm"

Yup, that's what they are reporting.  This is next, I guess:

Because you just can't believe the quantity of bullshit shoveled at you by right wingers without an opportunity for lots of practice.

Greg Pisarevski, American Thinker:  "Is Eric Holder really qualified to scold Jeff Sessions?"

He's qualified to punch the smirk off that slimy bastard's face, and I wish he would get around to it already.

Conrad Black, Newsmax:  "Russia Probe Best Outcome: End Criminalizing Political Differences"

I.e. let the Republicans off for the massive criminality and betrayal they have perpetrated on the government, or get ready for more Benghazi and e-mail persecutions from the Republicans.

Sputnik International (linked to by Newsmax as one of their featured stories:)  "Who Could Benefit From Poisoning Former Spy Sergei Skripal?  Russia had neither the motive nor the intention to poison Sergei Skripal, a former spy who has been living in Britain since 2010...he Skripal case could have been used by the US and Britain to further demonize the Russian leadership and exert considerable pressure on the Kremlin amid the election....Anglo-American intelligence agencies decided to conduct an operation to discredit Russia and Putin and cast a shadow over the Russian election and the legitimacy of the presidency in general"

Yup, it wasn't Putin up to his usual tricks, it was the deep state, those evil career government employees in the US and England, who actually poisoned this Russian spy.  And right wingers are so far down the rabbit hole these days that this is an explanation of this poisoning which is as likely to them as the claim the Russians did it.

Newsmax:  "How to Dissolve 50 Years of Artery Plaque"

Just to make it clear what sort of people read Newsmax.

Luke Rohlfing, Big League Politics:  "Stormy Daniels’ Mom: I Will Vote for Trump “Every Time”

Yeah, the political opinion of a woman who raised her daughter to be a prostitute.  That counts for a lot.

J. D. Heyes, Natural Health News:  "Left-wing hate bigot John Oliver incites liberal mob to attack children’s book author"

Left wing hate bigot.  John Oliver.

Maybe they're talking about a different John Oliver.

And now, let's end things with our traditional visit to Before It's News:

Before It's news:  "Are we supposed to believe that it took them 3 weeks to find the Austin bomber? Is he really just another FBI-selected patsy killed to quickly make the case go away?  Operation Gladio C (OGC)is in full swing through these not so United States of America.  Deep State has been regularly using OGC strategy and tactics to counter the “Patriot Movement” that elected Donald Trump.  This ongoing nationwide series of black operations is being conducted under the rubric of NATO’s Operation Gladio so the true perps can claim plausible deniability... the power elite is determined to make an example of Texas, that’s why!  Should any other state in the union attempt to resist the dictates of Deep State, or the New World Order agenda being implemented by the globalists, they will be similarly terrorized."

This goes on for a while, but you get the idea:  It's the Democrats and their evil government that actually carried out these bombings, not a home schooled, anti-abortion, gay hating right winger.

Al Duncan, Before it's News:  "Trump Indicts 18,000, Including Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid"

Boy, bet you missed that story in the fake liberal news, huh?  18,000 indictments!  Here, I didn't even know that the President could indict anyone- I thought a prosecutor or someone had to do that.  Not any more, I guess.

"And here comes Donald Trump, trumpeting: “Make America Great Again, Americanism not Globalism,” with a promise to clean out the swap creatures.  This was a death cry to the decades of achievements by the Shadow Government and its Deep State swamp creatures."

Curiously, nowhere in this incoherent thousand word rant does a thing about those Trump indictments come up.  Strange, huh?

Benjamin Fulford, Before It's News:  "The World Is About to Find Out Just How Horrific the Khazarian Mafia’s Crimes Were"

Never heard about the "Khazarian Mafia?"  Hint: it's a right wing term for Jews.

Before it's News:  "“Alliance Insider: ‘Stage 5 Will Start by This Weekend’”

Huh?  Well, here's the explanation of that cryptic announcement:

“Our source within the Alliance, who we have been calling Arthur, recently briefed us on Michael Horowitz’ investigation into Deep State elements including Hillary Clinton’s use of her private email to handle classified information, recent assassination attempts on President Trump, the Military taking control of the CIA, Obama’s bloodline ties to the Rockefeller’s, Net Neutrality, the assassination of General Patton, solar flares and EMP attacks, political correctness, and a potential of mass casualties in the event of an extended grid down scenario.

“This is it. What we’ve been talking about, Stage 5 will swill start by this weekend. Satan’s 17 are going to get theirs by Saturday. The whole investigation – Muller, Rosenstein, and the rest of the 17 – all get smoked on or around Saturday… They’re Satanic. They’ve tied Obama, Hillary, Biden, Kerry, the war criminal that said we were baby killers, all of them are going to burn all at once."

What about who took the last of the cookies?

"The SEAL teams, the SWAT teams, the Dark Ops, the snipers, the rangers, the Delta Force, they’re all behind Trump and they’re ready to go hunting. As soon as the Deep State pokes up its head, the military is going to play Whack-a-Mole."

They're all going to go out and start shooting Democrats!  Stock up on the popcorn, folks, the fun is about to start!

That's enough from Green Eagle today- he's got to put in some more time getting his bunker ready.

He Hasn't Hit Bottom Yet

I've pretty much stopped commenting on Donald Trump's clear insanity, because everyone can see what is going on, but today represents a new low.  Is there no bottom to this man's depravity, and is there no point at which his fellow Republicans, who hold all the reins of government in their hands, are going to do their duty and remove him?

In the last day or so, we've seen this:

First of all, Trump just precipitated a 724 point one day drop in the Dow Jones average, through an erratic and totally un-thought out trade attack on China.  We'll have to see what happens to the markets tomorrow; hopefully this is a one day catastrophe and not one more step toward a real crash.  In any event, the guy is playing with worldwide depression, in order to feed his own ego.  I don't care who voted for him; what decent person wants him in the White House?

Next, Trump's main lawyer in his incipient treason case quit yesterday, for reasons that seem pretty obvious.  I could care less about that, but as I clearly remember Trump's choice to replace him, one Joseph diGenova, I feel called upon to briefly discuss what is going on here.

Yes, diGenova is technically a lawyer- he does have a law degree and is licensed- but that has nothing to do with the public role that he has played in the last two decades.  DiGenova and his wife were among the most vicious, irrational attackers of the Clintons, back when Bill Clinton was President, and he has ever since then appeared repeatedly on Fox News, willing and able to spread the most malignant smears against anyone who opposed the Republican party.  This man cannot possibly be of any assistance in a real defense; what he is actually suited for is mounting the most aggressive, offensive attempt to destroy Trump's opponents that anyone could provide.  No one seems to want to contemplate what role this miserable excuse for a human being is actually suited for, but to me it seems an obvious tell that Trump is abandoning any pretense of a real defense to the charges against him, and simply beginning a strategy of using his power to crush anyone who dares to tell the truth about him.  This presages a coming period of chaos that dwarfs the obscene idiocy we have seen so far from Trump.

And finally, and worst of all, today Trump fired his national security adviser, H. R. McMaster, a Lieutenant General who formerly was a military history professor at West Point, and replaced him with a violent lunatic, the execrable John Bolton, who has spent his entire public career agitating for war, most notably against Iran and North Korea. As far as I am concerned, this presages a clear intent from Trump to start a war, somewhere, anywhere.  This is partly the result of Trump's hopeless addiction to violent bullying, and partly due to his belief that the country would never eject a sitting President during a war, no matter how corrupt and subversive he might be.

Well, the prospects of war and depression just became far more likely today.  How do you like them apples, huh, people?  I'd guess that the likelihood of one or the other happening in the near future is at least 70% now.

Three decades of Democrats allowing the Republican cancer to grow without making any meaningful effort to stop it; and an equally long period in which the Republican party bred a deranged, violent base which cheers on the most destructive candidates it can find, and here we are.  Welcome to Hell.

Forgotten Heroes of Conservatism- Chapter Three: Gerald L. K. Smith

In this chapter, I want to continue with another right wing predecessor of today's Conservative movement, who was massively popular in the thirties through the fifties, but who has been virtually pushed out of the historical record at this point:  Gerald L. K. Smith.  Like Billy James Hargis and Father Coughlin, he started out as a religious figure, and over a period of years migrated into politics, promoting a political viewpoint which I believe will be familiar to anyone watching the Republican party of the last few decades, although perhaps in a less varnished form.  I mention this because it is important, I believe, to understand that the current view that the Republican party has somehow coopted the Evangelical movement is actually backwards- standard American Conservatism actually grew out of Evangelical Christianity and has been manipulated by it, not the other way around.  Anyway, decide for yourself.

Smith was born in 1898, and spent the early part of his adulthood as a preacher.  He met Huey Long in 1929, and worked for Long until Long's death in 1936, after which he struck out on his own. After Long was assassinated, Smith took over leadership of Long's "Share our Wealth Society" for a short time, during which he steered it toward an overt anti-Semitic platform.  I'll quote Wikipedia about his subsequent activities:

"In 1944, Smith formed the America First Party, essentially appropriating the name. He became a member of William Dudley Pelley's pro-Nazi Silver Shirts organization, which was patterned after Hitler's brown shirts..."

Pelley who was later convicted for violating the Espionage Act in 1942 and sentenced to 15 years in prison, is due for his own chapter in this series.

"The Cross and The Flag was an eight-page monthly magazine founded in April 1942 and published until December 1977. Reverend Gerald L. K. Smith was editor and publisher. The publication was started to replace Father Coughlin’s Social Justice magazine which was banned in 1942 by the Justice Department from the mails...Smith wrote the vast majority of the articles in the publication.   "The Cross and The Flag" was a common phrase and reference used by the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s and 1930s...The Cross and the Flag regularly ran articles with titles like “The Satanic Will to Mongrelize,” “The Tolerance Racket,” “The Black Devil of Race Destruction,” and “The Brotherhood Bunk.”

In the late 1930's, Smith moved to Detroit, where he was befriended by Henry Ford, author of the infamous early 1920's book "The International Jew," a viruently anti-Semitic work which was a major influence on the thinking of Adolf Hitler.

To quote "The Cross and The Flag:"

“The day came when I embraced the research of Mr. Ford and his associates, and became courageous enough and honest enough and informed enough to use the words: ‘Communism is Jewish.’”

His adjective-laden sentences with their hard hitting analogies and humor was hateful to all liberals. He was living in a world controlled by far left villains and jewish conspiracies."
By the way, please note that, even at this time, angering liberals was as much a goal of the right as anything else.  Even in this, the behavior of modern day right wingers has a history that stretches back far beyond Reagan.

Too get a feeling for those "adjective-laden sentences," I want to recommend that you watch this one minute excerpt from a speech delivered by Smith in 1936:

Notice first of all the similarity in speaking style to that of a man for whose ideas Smith had tremendous sympathy, Adolf Hitler.  But even more importantly for our purposes, pleas note the glorification of the rural masses coupled with a threat to forcibly take back the supposedly stolen government, which is a clear precursor to the central propaganda line of the current Republican party.

Smith's active career continued through the fifties, incorporating an extreme form of holocaust denial and similar anti-Semitic tropes, along with the now-standard hostility toward black Americans, and anything with the slightest hint of liberalism.

And here is a specimen of the sort of publicity issued by Smith's organization.
Sorry about the gap in the middle- the only readable copy of this I could find
was in two pieces, with a little missing between them.

I am going to depart from my normal style here, and devote most of the rest of this piece to excerpts from a piece written by Smith:

"THIS IS CHRISTIAN NATIONALISM.by Gerald L. K. Smith

The first principle for which we stand is: Preserve America as a Christian Nation being conscious of the fact that there is a highly organized campaign to substitute Jewish tradition for Christian tradition.

Safeguard American liberty against the menace of bureaucratic Fascism...Fascism, as we now have it, is confiscating independent wealth by way of the income tax and destroying the liberty of the States by way of the Supreme Court. At this very moment we face the risk of a nine-man Fascist dictatorship, posing as the Supreme Court of the United States, completely contrary to our Constitutional traditions.

Fight mongrelization and all attempts being made to force the intermixture of the black and white races...Subversive forces, exploiting sentimental nitwits, are reading into the Constitution a code of conduct which threatens to mongrelize our race, destroy our racial self-respect and enslave the white man.

America has given away her reserves. We have bankrupted our economy. Our national debt, our state and local government debts, plus our personal debts far exceed the assessed value of every visible piece of property in the United States. This epidemic of economic blood-letting began at a time when Jew internationalists, in control of propaganda , almost convinced a majority of our people that it was subversive to use the term America First.

Oppose a World Government and a Super-State...We believe that the whole U. N. project is a subversive conspiracy to destroy our independence.  The original designer of this subversive Charter fought to give us a complete World Government in which America would be only a voting state

Safeguard America's tradition in relationship to immigration...The same conspirators who would destroy our Nation and its independence by treason from within, or by the establishment of a World Government - these same forces are ready to let down the bars and admit the Asiatic, African and European multitudes.  This campaign to destroy our immigration tradition is supported by every Jewish and Communist organization in the world...if the wall ever breaks we will be invaded and destroyed without the firing of a shot, merely by the act of indiscriminate admission of aliens to our shores."

I think I hardly need point out that, with his racism, his hatred of immigrants, his opposition to the United Nations, his obsession on the national debt, his attacks on judges, his claim that the United States is a Christian nation, his railing against "bureaucratic fascism," i.e. government regulation, Smith shows himself to be in almost perfect accord with the platform of the post-Reagan Republican party.  In this, he is a perfect illustration of the morphing of the intolerance of early twentieth century Evangelical Christianity into the ideological basis of American Conservative thought.  At the risk of being repetitive, let me point out that this loathsome political movement grew out of Evangelical Christianity.  It was Evangelical Christianity that manipulated the Republicans into becoming the party of hate, not the Republicans who manipulated Evangelicals into becoming a religion of hate.

We Live in a Dictatorship

As of today, with the American Reichstag deciding on a total party line basis that the manifest treason of their leader must be allowed to continue unopposed, I think it is past any question that this party has openly embraced totalitarian, one party rule.  Today is the day that the Republican treatment of the opposition truly justifies comparison with the way the Nazi party destroyed other parties in the months after Hitler's rise to power.

And let us be clear about this:  there is not one single person on the House intelligence committee, Democrat or Republican, who does not know the true nature of Trump's crimes.  The destruction of the means to uncover the evidence shows that the Republicans know the monstrous crime in which they are accessories.

And all of this accompanied by Trump's staging of the closest thing he could manage to a Nuremberg rally in Pennsylvania this week; an open display of hatred, racism and barely suppressed violence that is, finally, truly deserving of comparison to Nazi Germany.

It has taken a little over one year from the Republican ascent to total power to reach this point.  That's slower than Hitler, who took only a few months to destroy all other political parties in Germany and openly show that he intends his party to do whatever it wants, regardless of the law and regardless of humanity.  But there is hardly any comfort in that, any more than there is comfort in the fact that, as this party has descended into madness, its supporters have refused to acknowledge the obvious truth.

This is the path down which Nixon and Reagan and Bush and Cheney and Gingrich and Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell have willingly and deliberately steered us, while the press and Democratic leaders and so many others refused to state the obvious truth.

And let me make two little points here:  First of all, whatever Hitler was, he was not a traitor.  He enslaved and killed non-Germans without a care, but he never joined with a foreign leader to destroy his own country.  And second, however much damage Hitler did, he did it without his hands on five thousand nuclear weapons.

Well, here we are.  Now what?

Worst Twitter Insult of All Time?

From someone named Deano:

"ROFL As if Donald Trump would sleep with a disease ridden slut like you all you are is a glorified prostitute after quick cash.  Why would he want you when he has Ivanka?"

You've got a great point there, Deano!  Why would he want to get a porn star in bed, when he could just fuck his own daughter?

Wingnut Wrapup

Every kind of idiocy to blot out the wingnut's apprehension of what sort of monsters they elected.  It continues to amaze me what mental gymnastics they are willing to go through to deny the obvious reality, but I keep feeling that someone has to keep an eye on this distressing phenomenon, because it is going to form the intellectual basis of their rejection of any responsibility for what has happened to this country:

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "EXCLUSIVE: Meet the Conservative Parkland Massacre Survivor the Media Has Largely Ignored"

No thanks, Guy.  Do you expect us to be impressed that out of all the students at this school, right wingers managed to find one sixteen year old that they could manipulate with promises of fame and fortune, to say what they want?  And it's sort of funny that we are expected to ignore everything a teenager says, unless they agree with the Republican party; then they are the voice of enlightenment.

Michael Brown, Town Hall:  "How Billy Graham Might Have Responded to George Will"

Man, talk about an article that no sane person wants to read.

Leah Barkoukis, Town Hall:  "Rep. Trey Gowdy, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman, said Sunday a second special counsel to look into the Department of Justice and FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation and possible collusion between President Trump and Russia during the 2016 presidential election may be necessary."

Another e-mail investigation- From the man who brought you the Benghazi hearings.

Kurt Schlichter, Town Hall:  "Against Fake Civility...They tell us that our uppity refusal to quietly submit to abuse and subjugation, both figurative and literal, makes us bad people. Not only can we live with that, but we should celebrate it."

Of course, this applies only to White people who refuse to submit to phony abuse.  When it comes to Black people and their real centuries long history of abuse and subjugation, even kneeling down on a football field turns out to be an unacceptable outrage.  Just to make it clear, this is open racism; something we never thought we would see again in this country from a major political party.  How wrong we were.

"George W. Bush was civil, oh so civil, or so dignified. He was so civil and dignified that we got eight years of Barack Obama and we came that close to going under forever."

Ha.  We got Obama because Republicans were just too nice, not because they caused a depression that Obama had to avert,  and started a criminal war of aggression in which a million civilians were killed.

"The problem is that progressives are not people of good faith.  They are not trying to reason. They are not trying to compromise. They do not accept the basic concept that all American citizens have inalienable rights and that the law must apply equally to everyone. They hate us."

Just one more example of Republicans blaming the other side for their own evil behavior.  And may I again point out that this is not projection, which is a psychological problem; it is a conscious strategy of lying to obscure their own crimes.

Cortney O'Brien, Town Hall:  "Flake Predicts Trump Will Have Company in 2020"

Another article I couldn't be bothered to read, but I hope Cortney means this is because federal prisons have two man cells.

David Soloway, PJ Media:  "The time seems ripe to further the process of (Joe) McCarthy’s rehabilitation."

Great.  And then we can get onto doing the same for Heinrich Himmler.  Because there is nothing so in need of positive historical assessment as Conservative hatred and lies.

Steven Kruiser, PJ Media:  "Dear California: Call Me When the Commies Leave"

This is one article I actually did read, or at least part of it- it went on and on, so eventually I snapped out of my daze.  Turns out that every Democrat in the State is a Commie.  Steven lives in Arizona, and will be happy to move to California when all the Democrats are liquidated.  Sort of like Germans moving to Poland after 1939.

Tyler O'Neal, PJ Media:  "Determined 'Not to Die a Human,' Transgender Dragon Lady Spent $60K to Confirm 'Second Birth'

And here she is:

And if she didn't want to die a human, she could have saved so much money by just becoming a Republican.  All that surgery and she still isn't half as nauseating looking as Donald Trump.

Kevin McCulloch, Town Hall:  "Trump's Tariff Declaration Is Brilliant...President Trump is the most masterful negotiating presence in the White House of not just the modern era, but in American history."

And you expect wingnuts to believe anything bad about Trump at all.  They are terminally delusional, and served by a media empire dedicated to furthering those delusions.

Cristina Laila, Gateway Pundit:  "“Bigger Than Watergate!” POTUS Trump Unleashes on Obama and Crooked Hillary For Illegally Spying on His Campaign"

He's in panic mode now...and by the way, someone should try to explain to him that gathering information about your electoral opponent is not illegal, particularly when the information is true.  Funny that Trump apparently believes it is just fine to tell any kind of lie about Democrats, but that they are criminals for telling the truth about him.

Joshua Caplan, Gateway Pundit:  "The FBI’s Secret Warrant To Spy On Carter Page Should Scare All Americans"

Or at least all of the ones who conspired with a foreign dictator to subvert our democracy.  I wouldn't be surprised if that description fits all the Americans Joshua knows.

And now, how about a little panic:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "US Speeds Past 4th Step in 6 Step Process of Democrat-Communist Totalitarian Rule"

Too boring to report on Jim's predictably asinine remarks.  Let's just notice a second time today that major right wing blogs have totally conflated the Democratic party with Communists.

And the important question of the day:

Rev. Mark Creech, Renew America:  "Is Billy Graham's death prophetically significant?"

No.

"Could Christ be at the door to deliver his people from the bonds of this earth and take them to their final home?  I must confess that I've had similar thoughts about the passing of Billy Graham...Our world is certainly ripe for God's wrath, especially the West, especially the United States."

Rev. Creech: schizophrenic, or just a lying con man?  We report, you decide.

And a little more stark raving madness from the right:

Linda Kimball, Renew America:  "(T)he sinister power stealthily aiding and abetting the massacre of Syrian Christians is our own 'deep state' Gnostic Progressive Leftist controlled government.  Though names have changed over time and new members added, it remains the case that behind the murderous Soviet Union, Hitler's occult National Socialist Reich, the ongoing destruction of the West, redistribution of its wealth, and replacement of Westerners and Americans with Muslims, there has been a powerful financial coterie of 'elite' progressives and like- minded travelers committed to a mystical pantheist worldview, apotheosis, self-empowerment, revolution and death.

Having rejected the Christian roots of their own civilization, contemporary Progressive Leftists have merged materialism with a new Gnostic mystical pantheist order of beliefs of which global socialism, a form of monism (collectivism or totalism), is a logical expression. In keeping with Marxist Communism, Nazi Socialism, New Age Spirituality, Luciferianism, and "God is dead" theology, Progressive Leftism is a Neo-Gnostic movement that exalts Lucifer as the Light Bearer and emancipator of man while demonizing Jehovah as an evil, malformed, ignorant deity sometimes called Yaldabaoth, the 'fallen' Holy Creator God of the Old Testament who created the evil material world, angels and human beings."

Made it through that, did you?  I think we are reaching the point where the entire wingnut world view is basically indistinguishable from schizophrenia.  And I do not make this remark as a joke.  The above, from a major right wing website, is essentially indistinguishable from the ravings of the worst paranoid psychotic.

Tim Jones, American Thinker:  "Is There a Link Between Progressivism and Depression?  What is going on in American society and why is there an epidemic of depression and anxiety?"

Funny that the "epidemic of depression and anxiety" coincides with the Republicans taking total control of the country, but it's all the fault of progressives, who have no control over anything.  Well, let's take comfort in small things; at least he wasn't trying to blame progressives for economic depression, which is such a specialty of his people.  We hear enough of that sort of insane blame casting, of course, but at least not today.

And now, up is down:

Noel S. Williams, American Thinker:  "The Democrats as Russian Dupes, 2018 Edition...Perhaps Trump was observant when describing the Democrats' reactions at his SOTU address as treasonous...Democrats are against Trump out of fear that his polices are generally good for America...In essence, what's good for America is bad for Democrats.

The Russian intruders must be thrilled with their puppet, Nancy Pelosi.  Given the extent of her collaboration, perhaps we should assign her a Russian-style last name like Popov; after all, Nancy has been popping off a lot lately.   Nancy Popov is like a political commissar shrieking that Trump's DACA proposal is subterfuge to make America white again."

Yes, you see, it is Nancy Pelosi who is the Russian collaborator, not Donald Trump, despite the literally hundreds of pieces of evidence now available, of his connection to Vladimir Putin.  Once again, the Republican tactic of the decade:  scream as loudly and as viciously as you can that it's your opponents who are guilty of your own crimes.

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Innovation in fast food industry making 'Fight for Fifteen' irrelevant..."Flippy" is a burger-flipping robot that is just one of the technological innovations in the fast food industry that will eventually make the union-backed "Fight for Fifteen" minimum wage movement irrelevant.  It's hard to fight for increased pay for a job that doesn't exist."

Take that, American workers!  Want a job with a livable wage?  Screw you, we're replacing you with a machine!

"It's ironic that in pressing for unrealistic wages, fast food workers have spurred companies to innovate."

"Unrealistic" wages being, in this case anything that does not leave workers so close to starvation that they have to take whatever vicious deal their employers want to provide. And "innovation" becomes a euphemism for "more money for the boss, less for the workers,"  I.e. Republican utopia.

And now the Conservative whine of the day:

Monica Showalter, American Thinker:  "Thrashing around with a non-story on collusion, the press gets despicable...Mike Allen, who rightfully acted as the adult in the room with his chiding of the press as it grasped for straws in the decaying rubble of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian collusion investigation, has now given the press a new smack-down in its shameful exploitation of an obviously fragile man of no consequence to the news: Sam Nunberg."

Yes indeed.  When a Republican makes a total fool of himself acting belligerent on national TV, it is just out of bounds to point it out.

"But they exploited the fragile man, with zero respect for his well-being, given that he was a supporter of President Trump.  This is "awful scandal porn" and what makes people hate the press"

If he's too weak to answer for his own behavior, maybe he was too weak to work for Trump, who destroys everyone he gets close to.  By the way, it's sort of cute, isn't it, that they're still insisting that Mueller's got nothing, huh?

Thomas Lifson, American Thinker:  (Liberals) must realize how harmful the anti-gun crusade is to their cause, as they watch the momentum garnered from the massacre in Parkland dissipate and energize the public against gun-grabs."

The momentum is dissipating...Is that what you have noticed happening?  In fact, this time around the exact opposite seems to be taking place, but wingnuts are going to believe what wingnuts want to believe.

Pat Hall, American Thinker:  "Co-opting children for political gain...Framing students as credible experts on gun policy is simply irresponsible."

Whereas treating paid liars for the NRA as experts is simply the sensible thing to do.

And let's not end today's column without a new low in gratuitous abuse of Hillary:

Before It's News:  "Clinton Kuru Disease Diagnosis... Kuru belongs to a class of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), also called prion diseases.  You can contract the disease by eating an infected brain...This has everything to do with cannibalism; it has everything to do with Hillary Clinton"
Yes, Hillary Clinton is a cannibal who eats human brains.  That is actually what they are saying.  No kidding- that's what they want you to believe.  Not a metaphor- she is actually in the basement of that Pizza Parlor eating human brains.

"Please Note: Due to the constant threat of internet censorship, this article and video content may not be publicly available for long – Get this information out!"

God in heaven above, there is no bottom line for these people.  And if you are sincerely confused about how much credence to give to articles at Before It's News, read this:

Before It's News:  "Hibernating Alien Discovered Inside Secret Chamber In The Great Pyramid"

Or this:

Before It's News:  "My Dead Girlfriend Keeps Messaging Me on Facebook – I’ve Got the Screenshots, I Don’t Know What to Do"

Sad to say, a hell of a lot of people do seem to read this stuff, and believe it too.  It's like the Red Queen, who said she practiced believing impossible things every day.  With these people, it's just practice for believing the most impossible thing; that it's Hillary and not Trump who is the Russian Traitor.  Okay, that's it for me.  I've fried enough neurons for one day.
