Flipping

Your President:  ""It's called flipping and it almost ought to be illegal...it's not a fair thing."

It ought to be illegal.  Let's be clear here: "flipping" is a mob term for telling the truth to the government.  If the truth is bad for Donald Trump, it should be illegal to say it out loud.

Nothing else to say here; the implication is pretty obvious.

Truth Isn't Truth

It would be the official motto of the Republican party if they didn't already have one:  "Everything for me and to hell with you."

Update:  Donald Trump today:  "“Even if I am telling the truth, that makes me a liar”

You figure out what he is trying to claim there.  It's beyond me.

Chidren of Hate

Those of you who read the Washington Post may have seen an article recently about a small town in Pennsylvania that has been significantly taken over by self-styled Nazis.  I want to recommend that you take the time to examine a photo essay by a photographer named Anthony Karen, documenting one of these families.  I take the liberty of reprinting one of these photos here; there are many more at the link, and their collective effect is far more terrifying.
The experiential and emotional poverty in which these children are raised is truly appalling to me, as is the hatred that fills the gaps left by their parents, who keep breeding more children without the intellectual and moral wherewithal to properly raise them.  I cannot tell how mentally inadequate the parents are; several of the children have been diagnosed as being "autistic;" I wonder in this case if this is not a modern euphemism for mental inadequacy, perhaps resulting from the genetics of the parents.  I do not know what can possibly be done about families like this, but they are bound to represent a severe problem for everyone around them, on into the future.

Unite the Right 2 Takes to the Streets, Hooah!

I guess I will file this report on the great national Unite the Right 2 march that happened in front of the White House this weekend, on the first anniversary of the great Charlottesville riot that did so much to establish Nazis as deserving of a place in our national political life, just to keep up my record.

This event was the beneficiary of an immense amount of publicity from both right wing sources and our mainstream press, so I think it should be indicative of the real strength of the right in the United States.  Well, here it is:
Yup, that's it:  about thirty people in a national march after receiving immense publicity.  Here's a little of the coverage in the local paper:

I want to comment on what this latest in an endless string of humiliating failures by the right means.  First of all, let me make it clear that none of us can deny being stunned in the last couple of years by the sheer number of white people filled with hatred and violence that there are in this country.  But we can take some comfort in the fact that the overwhelming majority of them are too fat, stupid, lazy, old or drunk (or a combination of the same) to do a damned thing to further their hatred.  Yes, they may manage to stagger down to the local polling place to vote every couple of years, and that in itself is a tragedy.  But evidence like this indicates that those who either fear or are praying for a new Civil War are likely to be deeply disappointed in this era's Johnny Rebs.

Bikers For Trump

He's so proud of them...
And yes, this is an actual Trump tweet, minus the red circle and arrow, of course.  How much more blatant can this guy get?
But of course the press will just ignore this tweet, or pretend that Trump just didn't notice the Nazi sign tattooed on the guy's arm.

Q Anon and the Collapse of the Trump World

I've been following the idiotic Q Anon cult almost since it first emerged a few months ago to tie every malicious right wing lie into one unified field theory of lunacy.    All along, I have thought that I should write a post about it, but I just didn't have the patience to deal with its obvious drivel.  There is, however, something I think should be said.

There is, at the center of the Q Anon weltanschauung,  a notion so preposterous that sane people can hardly believe anyone would fall for it, and yet over the last months it has emerged as a more and more important axiom of the whole pack of nonsense.  This is that the entire Mueller "investigation" of Trump is actually (believe it or not) a cover to hide the fact that Trump and Mueller are working together to bring down an evil cabal headed by Hillary Clinton and George Soros.  According to this claim, Mueller has already filed over 28,000 "sealed indictments" of Hillary, Obama and a vast array of other targets of the right's wrath.

"The central claim of the #QAnon conspiracy theory is that President Donald Trump’s Justice Department has filed thousands of sealed indictments against Democratic leaders, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy elites.

All are guilty of a variety of misdeeds, horrific sex crimes, affiliation with the “deep state,” and/or intent to harm the president and his administration.

And when the time is right, Trump will order the indictments unsealed, prompting a massive wave of arrests, with the accused tried in the field and sent to Guantanamo Bay for indefinite detention."*

Now, here is what interests me in all of this:  As more and more information has continually been revealed about Trump's treasonous and corrupt behavior, it has become harder and harder for anyone to maintain a public belief in his innocence.  Unfortunately, another factor is at work here: the more that is revealed about the spectacularly criminal behavior of Trump and the rest of his party, the more his followers are revealed to have been ignorant dupes and suckers, something they will never be able to admit to themselves.  To reconcile all of this requires the construction of ever more elaborate and deranged interpretations of reality; this has finally culminated in the Trump-Mueller theory, certainly one of the most hare-brained interpretations of the facts since the notion that the earth is hollow and we all live inside.
See, some people will believe anything.

Any sane person can clearly see the lunacy of this claim, but at this point that kind of stretching of reality is all the Republicans have to account for the known facts.  So, the question is obvious:  What happens when Mueller starts to really show his cards, and this fantasy collapses?  Certainly, it will not presage a mass acceptance by right wingers of how deluded they were.  The real question is if, by the time this happens, presumably in a few more months, Trump and Republican leaders will have managed to stir the right up into such a rage that there will be widespread violent attempts to start a new civil war, or if, as is more probable, given their past behavior, they just ignore their massive humiliation and march on, ignorant, stupid and filled with hatred as always, ready and willing to serve the Republican master plan to destroy our country.

*This interesting article, written by Mike Rothschild at Daily Dot, explains the gross distortion of the claim about the 28,000 "sealed indictments," if you are interested.

An Economic Prediction

Donald Trump:  "We're on track to hit the highest annual average growth rate in over 13 years and I will say this right now, and I'll say it strongly."

A lie, of course, from the man who has told thousands of them in the last two years..  NBC news has this reply:

"President Barack Obama, whose first election coincided with a debilitating economic collapse, had four quarters of higher growth than this during his presidency. It would tie for the fifth strongest quarter under President George W. Bush and the 13th strongest quarter under President Bill Clinton."

If you go online, you find various accounts, for some reason, of what the quarterly growth rate has been the last decade.  Here is one I found, in the middle of the pack:

I added the lines, at 4% growth and 3.5% growth.  Whatever the exact numbers, you can see that as expected, Trump's grandiose claims that he has produced unique growth are far outside the realm of reality, particularly given constant Republican attempts to sabotage the economy during the Obama administration.

Anyway, here is my prediction:  The 4.1% number that Trump is slinging around is a preliminary estimate.  Anyone who follows these statistics knows that a couple of months later, a real number is published, and if you have followed this issue closely, you will know that the preliminary number has often been tampered with by Republican administrations, at least since Nixon.  I suspect that the revised number will not emerge until after the election, and that it will be substantially lower than Trump's boasting.  By then, of course, the Republicans will have milked this lie dry, and the press, having let him live on the lie, will pretty much ignore the real numbers.

I could be wrong, but that's what I expect.
