Big Tent Party

Senator Jim DeMint pens an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal today that's well worth a look (if you are in need of a good laugh). Here are a few excerpts, with appropriate comments:

"How Republicans Can Build a Big-Tent Party

It's the Democrats who won't tolerate a diversity of views."

Uh Huh.

".....conservatives are right to remind moderates that Republicans only succeed when we rally around clear principles."

Yeah, like "everything for the rich people," or "bombs before blabbing." Unbelievably, this did work for them for a long time, so I see what he means.

"No Child Left Behind didn't win us "soccer moms," but it did cost us our credibility on locally controlled education. Medicare prescription drugs didn't win us a "permanent majority," but it cost us our credibility on entitlement reform. "

Yeah. What kind of lunatic loser could ever believe that better education, and health care reform could possibly be appealing issues to the American people, as opposed to such long term Republican winners as "let the bankers run wild" or "lets kill some more brown people."

"Every year, another Republican quality was tainted: managerial competence, fiscal discipline and personal ethics."

Managerial competence, fiscal discipline and personal ethics. Yup, the first things that come to our minds when we hear the word "Republican." After "moron" and Crook," that is.

"Our party benefits from national-security debates; but Republicans can start from the premise that the U.S. is an exceptional nation and force for good in history."

Because Democrats, of course do not believe that the U. S. can be a force for good. A perfect example of this is the irrational Democratic opposition to torture, which we all know is a prominent feature of governments that have been considered "forces for good" throughout history.

"That's why I'm working to reduce Washington's grip on our lives and devolve power to the states."

No, it's not, you liar. It's because any mention of "states rights" is a covert announcement to right wingers everywhere that you are an unrepentant racist just like them.

Well, that's enough of that, I think. Listen, Jim, a word of advice: You guys keep thinking like that. A few more years and your "tent" will be just about big enough to hold a couple of corgis.

Correction: "Moron", "Crook" and "Pervert".

I stand corrected. Although calling Republicans "perverts" might easily be seen as an insult to perverts.
