People of God, and Petty Gossip
I hate to turn away from my obsession with wingnuts to have so much to say about the Catholic church, but they just won't let me stop. From today's New York Times:
"A leading cardinal defended Pope Benedict at an unusual address at the pontiff's Easter Sunday Mass, saying the Church would not be intimidated by "petty gossip" about sexual abuse of children by priests.
But in his own Easter address hours later, the pope, looking at times weary, did not mention the scandal...
The surprise speech by Cardinal Angelo Sodano was the first time in recent memory that the ritual of a papal Easter Sunday Mass was changed so someone could address the pope at the start.
"The people of God are with you and will not let themselves be influenced by the petty gossip of the moment..."
And this is, of course, their attitude: We've got the power and we've got the money, and there's nothing you can do about it. If we just ignore the issue long enough, we can intimidate our parishioners into once again being "good Catholics" and keeping their damned mouths shut.
It is nothing but "petty gossip" apparently, for people to point out that they have knowingly participated in one of the most colossal and repugnant serial crimes in recorded history. They are confident that the most degraded sexual acts in the world will not affect the opinion of "people of God," and sad to say they are probably right.
