And now this delightful news:

"An abuse hotline set up by the Catholic Church in Germany melted down on its first day of operation as more than 4,000 alleged victims of paedophile and violent priests called in to seek counselling and advice.

Andreas Zimmer, head of the project in the Bishopric of Trier, admitted that he wasn't prepared for "that kind of an onslaught."

A commenter to a previous post suggested that the same disdain that I feel toward the Catholic Church these days should be directed at many other religions as well. I agree totally, but this is still somewhat different. As far as I can tell, the Catholic hierarchy has created and willingly maintained a mechanism for the systematic production of serial child rapists. I can't think of a comparable situation ever in the history of the world. The crimes these people have committed are at the very top of the list of the most disgusting and unforgivable acts a person can commit, yet it seems that they consciously turned out these predators for decades, if not centuries, without a thought for the fate of their victims.
