The Real Statistics

All we've heard the last few days is how Obama is losing his grip, how people are turning against him, how he is failing as a President. We can all understand how the Republicans want to spread this garbage, but it is still disturbing to see the readiness with which the mainstream media have lapped this lie up, and are regurgitating it for all.

Here's a little chart from Matthew Yglesias, which casts a little light on this propaganda:

As usual, a gigantic Republican lie, willingly retailed by our wonderful "liberal press."

Democrats had better keep their eyes on statistics like this. They can accomplish what the American people elected them to do, if they don't fall into the depression and torpor which they displayed from about 1980 to this year. And they'd better do this, or we may be looking at President Palin one of these days.

The blue dogs had better figure out that, if Obama fails, so do they. And if they stop him from enacting meaningful health care reform (by which I mean a viable public option,) they will be well along to seeing that he does fail.

The better stats are Republican v Democrat, as they compare the parties, not a party to an individual.

Republicans hold 11 of the top 13 issues.

You know, Derek, I'm not going to argue this issue. Back when I was your age, I was the joint owner of a Republican polling company called "Social Science Research Associates." How's that for an astroturf name?

It took me about six months to learn how to get any result I wanted from a poll.

I've been watching polls for a long time now, and I believe you have to be really careful about who is doing the polling- that is often more important than anything else. I think the chart I have shown reflects reality on this issue. I could show you polls that show far more Democratic leanings than this one, but I'll go with what I think is a safely middle of the road result.

These stats are from Gallup, which is of course just a Rush Limbaugh group right? Or a vast right wing conspiracy? If anything, they lean left.

"I could show you polls that show far more Democratic leanings than this one, but I'll go with what I think is a safely middle of the road result."

It'd be pretty hard for you to go left of Think Progress. You do realize that is what you are linking? Try Gallup, Reuters, hell even Fox or CNN. Note how I am not quoting stats from the GOP lapdogs (whatever those are).

"and I believe you have to be really careful about who is doing the polling"

Well when you have so little to back up your statements, I can see why you would pick the ones you choose to show carefully.

Derek,

For your information: George Gallup virtually invented modern political polling, and was always held in the highest regard. Even when his polls were wrong, no one doubted that he was using the best statistical tools at his disposal, with an intent to reach as accurate a result as possible.

However, Gallup has been dead for some time now. The company was inherited by George Gallup, Jr, who is a hard core fundamentalist Christian, and who has publicly stated his intent to use the organization to further his political and religious goals.

So, I don't think it unreasonable to look with distrust. I can't examine the methodology and sampling of every company on every poll, so I don't pay attention to the results of pollsters with a self-confessed agenda.

But it is ok to trust Think Progress? You truly are insane.

"so I don't pay attention to the results of pollsters with a self-confessed agenda."

Because THINK PROGRESS doesn't have an agenda? Are you joking? Think Progress, the uber-liberal lobbying PAC? Are we talking about the same group here? Either you are an idiot or you are a huge hypocrite. Take your pick.

How about bloomberg? Bloomberg was a Democrat for a very long time and is fairly liberal.
