Stupider than Republicans?

Jimmy Carter, in remarks today:

"Hamas leaders want peace and they want to have reconciliation not only with their Fatah brothers but also eventually with Israelis to live side by side, with two nations, both sovereign nations recognized by each other and living in peace"

Here are a few excerpts from the Hamas charter:

"Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it."

"The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgement Day. It, or any part of it, should not be squandered: it, or any part of it, should not be given up. "

"There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors."

"After Palestine, the Zionists aspire to expand from the Nile to the Euphrates. When they will have digested the region they overtook, they will aspire to further expansion, and so on. Their plan is embodied in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and their present conduct is the best proof of what we are saying."

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Muslims fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Muslims, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews."

Now there is a statement from a group that wants peace with Israel, yes sir. If, for some reason, you are so into self-punishment that you want to read the rest, here it is.

What in God's name is this guy doing even associating in public with these evil fanatics, let alone deliberately distorting their intentions?

I know that people have reacted very negatively when, after following them for several decades, I say that there is no such thing as an evangelical Christian who is not an antisemite. Well, can you think of one who is less likely to harbor hatred of Jews in his heart than Jimmy Carter? And yet here he is, doing his best to whitewash the intentions of an organization dedicated to the elimination not just of the state of Israel, but of Jews everywhere.

Can you convince yourself that Carter never read Hamas' founding document before throwing his weight behind their cause? Do you think that he can possibly be so ignorant as to believe that the people who produced this document "want peace?"

What the hell is wrong with this guy, that has turned him toward such malignancy?

I want to assume that Carter is well-intentioned here so I'd just chalk it up to wishful thinking/willful ignorance on his part.

Unfortunately, by speaking with Hamas Carter is lending them more credibility than they deserve, and I think that in doing so he is undermining the credibility of moderate Palestinians

I want to assume that too. But Hamas' behavior and public statements have been absolutely consistent over the years. Carter is an ex-President. He certainly knows the consequences of careless statements like this.

I'm sorry, I can't just absolve him by assuming that he just doesn't know what he's talking about.

Carter has long struck me as prone to the "anyone who's anti-Western is morally pure" syndrome. Or maybe he's just suffering from mental fogginess due to advancing age. The important thing, as here, is to keep the truth about Hamas in front of everybody. In fact, it's a violent and intolerant fundamentalist movement -- the Christian Right on steroids. Not only Jews but women, gays, and anyone who cares about individual freedom would be in danger if they fell under the jurisiction of Hamas, and ought to take a stand against the,.
