Fat Chance
Leon Panetta on This Week this morning, via Atrios:
“Winning in Afghanistan is having a country that is stable enough to ensure that there is no safehaven for Al Qaeda or for a militant Taliban that welcomes Al Qaeda,” Panetta told host Jake Tapper. “That’s really the measure of success for the United States.”
Leon, let me point something out to you: you guys can't even see to it that there is no safe haven in this country for abortion doctor murderers, would-be Nazis and open race haters, let alone the Crips and the Bloods. How the hell do you think the weak Afghan government is ever going to eliminate the Taliban, which, unlike the Crips and the Bloods is being financed and given haven by the country next door?
If that's what winning is, we've lost already. (note- that's exactly what we have done- Bush and Cheney lost this war years ago.) So the only sensible thing to do is to give up and pull out before we waste any more lives and money over there.
Can't handle the truth, huh, Leon?

The only viable exit strategy is to defeat the terrorists. The aggressors were defeated in WW2, and they had a much mightier military industrial complex. I would never accuse you and the Taliban and Bin Laden of agreeing with each other, Green, but the above quote could be taken from either of you.
Or perhaps from those in WW2 who believed that the Axis could never be stopped.
(Grunge: Real funny. Just like those who equate Obama's political party to Stalin's)
They could never be a threat to the United States.
False. Bin Laden (presuming that he is still alive) wants nothing more than to continue his campaign against the United States.
"The only viable exit strategy is to defeat the terrorists."
That is essentially meaningless jingoism. There is no such thing as "defeating the terrorists," at least not militarily. It took only 20 people to carry out the 9-11 attacks. Do you think there is any shortage of such people in the billion strong Muslim world?
We can only defeat these people by proving to the Muslim masses that we are their friends; and unfortunately we can't do that until we ARE their friends. Conservatives running around full of hatred toward people that they know nothing about are making sure that doesn't happen any time soon.
