Hangin' with Dictators

"(CNN) – Sen. John Ensign, R-Nevada, told CNN Sunday it was "irresponsible" for President Obama to have been seen "laughing and joking" with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at the Summit of the Americas on Friday.

"This is a person who is one of the most anti-American leaders in the entire world," Ensign told CNN's John King on State of The Union. "He is a brutal dictator and human rights violations are very, very prevalent in Venezuela. And you have to be careful."

I see. You know, I don't think I remember Senator John Ensign complaining when George W. Bush was out there kissing the brutal dictators and human rights violators in Saudi Arabia, or financing the brutal dictator and human rights violator in Pakistan, neither of whom (unlike Chavez) became heads of their countries in a generally fair election. Nor do I remember them showing concern when Bush was gazing lovingly into Vladimir Putin's eyes, or when he was begging the leaders of China not to send out country into bankruptcy.

No, but shaking hands with Hugo Chavez? That was just going too far.

We've heard about "It's okay if you're a Republican." I guess this is the corollary, "Nothing is okay if you're a Democrat."

Can we ever expect to see a shred of self-respect, let alone honesty, from the Republican Party?

Yes, but we're us, and they're them. That's a big difference, you know.
