The Real Reason?
I see a lot of liberals trying to figure out what in hell the new preposterous Republican campaign against the fourteenth amendment is about. It just doesn't seem to make much sense as a meaningful way to countrol immigration. Well, today I thought I'd read the amendment, and I found something in it that I didn't remember, which has nothing to do with "anchor babies" or immigrants at all, and which really made me think. Well, here it is:
"The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned."
Well, what do you know? Could this be part of the conservative plan, which we already know includes looting the wealth of our country to give to the rich? Without the repeal of the fourteenth amendment, it wouldn't be possible for them to just default on our national debt, and on all pensions which government employees worked a lifetime to earn. If they succeed in their campaign, presumably it would be perfectly constitutional for them to strip the nation of all assets, and then simply refuse to pay its liabilities.
It is my firm belief that everything the Republican party does, other than some contemptible pandering to the ignorant and greedy masses to keep them in line, is for the sole purpose of enriching the already rich. So I'm sorry, I can't convince myself that this clause isn't what the Republicans are really aiming for when they talk about doing away with the fourteenth amendment, and I am certainly going to keep my eyes open for any signs that this is the case.

We'll see. I have a pretty good record, going back a few decades now, of figuring out what the Republican party is up to.
Or how about the "death tax" nonsense? The Republican claim is that it is destroying family farms and small businesses. In fact, there is not a known case of a family farm lost due to the estate tax, nor is there any evidence that it has a meaningful effect on small businesses. In fact, only about 2500 families every year are hit by this tax, and their average net worth is $16 million. Again, a giveaway for the rich is disguised in populist lies.
The truth is that the real leaders of the Republican party do not give a damn about all of the stupid issues that the teabaggers are screaming about- they are just means of manipulating the poor into selling themselves down the river to aid the rich.
