Newt Tells It, Yeah!

Newt Gingrich, speaking about health care legislation today, demonstrating his deep commitment
to democracy:

"the United States is not going to tolerate a group of people trying apply kind of a Hugo Chavez majoritarian rule in the Senate."

Rule by the despotic minority? That's okay I guess. But only a Communist dictator would support majority rule. The American way, Republican style.

Wingnut Wrapup

It's been a while, but it's a little hard to get worked up about what some doofus in St. Louis thinks, when we have a raving lunatic in the White House.  anyway, here we go: Matt Vespa, Town Hall:  "Sorry Liberals, Ellison and DWS Remained Seated During Roughy Two-Minute Standing Ovation Honoring Fallen Navy SEAL's Widow" This is more important than two hundred Republicans in Congress conspiring to cover up treason.  And by the way, it's not true, not that that matters to Republicans. Leah Barkoukis, Town Hall"  "Cruz Defends Sessions Over Russia Report: It's a 'Nothing Burger' Treason: a nothing burger.  A legal lesson from the Republican party. Cal Thomas, Town Hall:  "Trump Reinvents Himself" One speech during which he did not degenerate into a shouting, spittle flecked maniac undoes two years of piggishness and hatred. Jim Jamitis, Red State:  "Maryland Democrats Pick Chris Matthews’ Wife As State Party ...

With the recent two incidents involving right wing Christian terrorists in this country*, and the total suppression, as usual, of their political affiliations by the mainstream press, I thought it would be beneficial to take a few minutes to consider briefly the history of these two groups, the Sovereign Citizen movement and the Christian Identity "religion."  This is not a complete story- the Christian Identity movement is an outgrowth of the British Israelite movement, which since the 1870's was based on the absurd claim that Northern Europeans were the real descendants of the Jews in the bible.  Various explanations have been given about where today's Jews came from, some going so far as to claim that Jews (and black people too, of course) are actually not human beings at all, but spawns of an affair which Satan supposedly had with Eve, which is why God ejected Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.  Well, enough of this idiocy, on with the story. First, with Chri...

I Can't Resist

I know it's useless, but I am going to make a remark about the acquittal of George Zimmerman for his murder of black teenager Trayvon Martin. I told this story some time ago, but it bears repeating.  As an L.A. Dodger fan, I learned that the Dodgers once had a minor league training camp in Sanford, Florida, the home of Zimmerman.  In the 1940's the Dodgers sent the now legendary Jackie Robinson, who would become the first black man to play major league baseball, to this camp: "As Jean West, a school teacher in Florida, wrote, "Branch Rickey had miscalculated the degree to which Jim Crow was entrenched in Sanford...The mayor of Sanford was confronted by what the author describes as a "large group of white residents" who  "demanded that Robinson...be run out of town." The Mayor caved. On March 5th, the Royals were informed that they would not be permitted to take the field as an integrated group. Rickey was concerned for Robinson’s life...
