One More Step on the Road to Hell

Did you ever, ever think you would live to see this kind of thing?

"Cash-Strapped States Resurrect "Debtors' Prisons"

Two reports published by NYU's Brennan Center for Justice and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) reveal a rising trend of patently unconstitutional practices in cash-strapped states, where a growing number of impoverished people are jailed for being unable to pay their legal fees - including charges for use of public defenders, a guaranteed right in the United States...

"Incarcerating people simply because they cannot afford to pay their legal debts is not only unconstitutional but also has a devastating impact upon men and women whose only crime is that they are poor," said ACLU senior staff attorney Eric Balaban."

This is the monstrosity which our country is rapidly becoming, in a Republican era where nothing counts but further enriching those who are already the richest among us.  Those of us who thought that this kind of world came to an end in the time of Dickens were really mistaken.  The United States is well on its way to becoming a third world dictatorship, and those who scream the loudest about their patriotism and about the constitution are leading the charge. And yet the Republicans are allowed to endlessly spout their lies, until a frightening portion of the American people think Obama is a communist, while no one dares speak the truth- that the Republican party has totally given itself over to establishing a fascist dictatorship in this county.
