In Case You Haven't Had Enough Bad News Lately

"Tokyo Electric Power Co. officials have confirmed that the situation in one of the four affected reactors is worse than previously claimed. The fuel rods that powered the No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant are fully exposed and have melted or fallen into the bottom of the steel containment vessel. That vessel is now believed to be far more damaged than previously admitted by TEPCO. In fact, it contains several holes through which water being poured onto the reactor is leaking into the environment."

Just the sort of thing that you want to hear, huh?  These reactors are going downhill faster than Donald Trump's approval rating.

30% of power in Japan comes from nuclear power plants. The plan was to make that 40% by 2020 and 50% by 2030.
It appears that plan is scrapped.

I am a great admirer of Japanese technological prowess. which goes back far beyond the electronic age, at least to the time of Hideyoshi. It is worth thinking about the value of a technology which cannot be safely utilized even by people with this kind of background.
