Why Can't They Be Honest About Anything?

Well, the following major headline at World Net Daily caught my attention this morning:

"Evil Hollywood Gets Big Surprise"

Now, I must admit, only working in Real Hollywood, I hadn't gotten any big surprises today, but I thought it would be interesting to see what had so surprised "Evil Hollywood," wherever that might be.  And here is the earth-shaking event:

"Christian film No. 1 at box office...'Alone Yet Not Alone' storms theaters across U.S."

And here's a poster for Alone yet not Alone-
I don't dare show this to my wife who actually made
movie posters as part of her job- I don't want her
to choke laughing

Well, that certainly stunned me!  Checking online, I soon found amazing corroboration of this report:

Proof The Bible Is True:  "Christian film “Alone Yet Not Alone” No. 1 at box office

Imagist:  "Faith-Based Film 'Alone Yet Not Alone' Opens as Top 3 Box Office Hit...Christian film No. 1 at box office. "Alone Yet Not Alone"

Online Baptist:  "Last week the movie Alone Yet Not Alone was #1 at the Box Office even though it only had a limited release. Not a mention about by any of the major media."

Pro Life Blogs:  "Faith-Based Film ‘Alone Yet Not Alone' Opens as Top 3 Box Office Hit"

How could this major entertainment story be suppressed by the Hollywood media, which (in what was expected to be a slow box office week) listed Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 as the top box office hit at just over $34 million on 4001 screens?  Those damned Hollywood liberals!  Or at least those damned Evil Hollywood liberals!

Well, it seems that the above stories left out a minor detail.  Alone Yet Not Alone opened on 11 screens in the following cities:   Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Colorado Springs, Grand Rapids, Knoxville, Nashville, Raleigh and San Antonio.  The producers are claiming that it earned $13,000 per screen, for a grand total of about $143,000.  This would indeed be the highest per screen gross this last weekend, but would only place it at #33, between the huge smash hits One Generation:This is Us, a film about a British boy band, now in its fifth week, and Inequality for All, a documentary about income inequality featuring that box office star, Robert Reich.

But even that claim cannot be substantiated.  Movie City News, the only source I found that cared to take a guess about the grosses for this film, listed its weekend take as $57,600, or $5,690 per screen, making it come in at #59, not # 1 in box office gross for this weekend, and making even the claim that it set the per-screen record ludicrous (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 grossed just over $8,000 per screen on 4001 screens, not 11.)

Far be it from me to lavish praise on the taste of the American public, which I have essentially spent a whole career in Hollywood working to degrade, but at least they were sensible enough to spend just about 570 times as much on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs as they did on the latest Christian piece of trash to come down the pike.

In the last couple of years, I have documented similar stories about some other "Christian" movies, as well about right wing cinematic extravaganzas such as the pathetic Atlas Shrugged disaster.  What I wonder is, who do they think they are lying to?  Is this just part of the continuing effort to keep their own followers convinced that they are part of some real movement that might actually produce something beyond farces like the current tea party disruption of the government?  Are they working the press, insisting that there are dozens, if not hundreds of times more of them than there really are?

I'm not really sure what is going on here, or how many wingnuts really believe the nonsense they force on the public.  I guess I'll just keep following their antics until I figure it out, or move on to something constructive.
