Redneck Family Values

Coming fast on the release of the police recording revealing (to the four or five people in the world who didn't get it yet) what a pack of low life trash the former Republican vice presidential nominee and her family are, is this tragic news:

"TLC has pulled the plug on its hit reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo after reports surfaced that star "Mama June" Shannon is dating a convicted child molester, Mark McDaniel."
And here he is.  Of course, giving that it's Mama June we're talking about here, maybe that's the best she could do.

In a fine display of how seriously this sort of person really takes the endlessly repeated right wing blab about "family values," the adorable "Mama June" dumped the father of Honey Boo Boo a few months ago, and now has taken up with this guy, who just got out of prison for "forcing oral sex" on an eight year old.  The victim is apparently some sort of relative of Mama June, just to give things a little more of that trailer-trash flavor.

For the record, I've seen five minutes of the show, during which a pig pooped on their dining table while they were getting ready for dinner, so I am no expert, but I am distressed at the way that right wingers make people like these worthless low-lifes, or the Duck Dynasty con men, or Sarah Palin's trashy family out to be exemplars of what it means to be a real American.

Off topic, but how'd impeach Obama week go?
Are we finally to be rid of the Kenyan usurper?

Also, here is a birther so hard core he claims Ted Cruz isn't eligible to be President. (My personal opinion is as much as I dislike Cruz he is a “natural born" American citizen.)

Dave, don't you worry yerself none, podner...oops, wait...Green Eagle was getting caught up in the redneck thing there. Anyway, Impeach Obama Week II is one of those special Conservative weeks with two weekends so it isn't over yet, but what I have seen so far seems to be right in line with the last one- a grotesque humiliation for anyone with enough self-respect to feel humiliated, a wonderful chance to hate the Black Man for the few of them that really exist. Anyway, a report is to come, you can be sure of that.

And I just learned that Impeach Obama Week II has been extended right up until election day! Man, will they be ready for the weekend after that.

Green Eagle,

You've made many good posts. This was not one of them.

The people who made "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo are not presenting the Shannon clan as Real Americans; they're presenting the family as trash to be ridiculed. Conservatives haven't been honoring the family; quite the opposite.

Here's commentary from one blog post from Red State: "Have you ever just watched an episode of “Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo” and realized that every character therein would be infinitely more valuable fulfilling a different role in the carbon cycle? . . . . Anything that kept Honey Boo-Boo’s parasitic cast of genetically worthless lard-slabs a couple of moon pies short of a full EBT Card would be absolutely commendable."

Here's Rod Dreher from the American Conservative: "My mother stopped by while it was on, and mentioned that my father won’t let the show be watched in his house. I know why, too: because it offends him that the show sets up working-class Southern people like him for ridicule. He doesn’t for a second live like the Honey Boo Boos, or esteem their values. In fact, just the opposite. . . . There is no shame in getting help from the government when you’re flat on your back. Someone like Mama June, though, is by any reasonable standard undeserving."

June Shannon has a damaged foot from a forklift accident, and is also legally blind.

Sarah Palin and the Robertsons on Duck Dynasty are sanctimonious, bigoted millionaires who pretend to be "just plain regular Americans." They deserve plenty of ridicule, and that ridicule doesn't bother me, because it consists of punching up.

Making fun of June Shannon bothers me. She is not the holier-than-thou type that Palin and the Robertsons are. She does not go around attacking others' appearances, so attacking hers should be off-limits. You're ridiculing her for being fat and uncultured, and your attacks on her are similar to what the above conservatives made.

Green Eagle, you are punching down here, and I don't like it. There's another word for punching down: bullying. Please save your vitriol for the conservative commentators and media folk who are in a position of power; they're the ones who need to be punched at.

P.S. I don't know how you manage to go through all the material for the wingnut wrap-ups and remain mentally balanced. After ten minutes of Glenn Beck on the radio, it would take all the restraint I have just to avoid smashing the thing.

The show was cancelled after Mama June was caught with the released child molester. Weeks before she claimed she'd never get with him but then... This is an age of Nothing is Really Private.

Mama June's daughter told her mother back in the day that Mark had touched her and Mama went into denial. I get she's not there now, but still... there are photos with Mark and June being very cosy. ICK!@@@@@

This isn't about labels like South or uneducated. It's about what is correct. Children can not consent - can not sign a contract, can not vote. I don't care what provocation anyone claims, kids are verboten. Period.

I'm all for the parrot to squawk as much as he wants on this. Mama June messed up and then didn't 'fess up.

Zog, I hear what you are saying, but I still think a major point of things like this is to poke a stick in the eyes of the fabled "liberal elites." As pretty much doomed to be cast in that role myself (Harvard educated Jew working in the film business- you can't be much more of a liberal stereotype than that) I believe that shows like this are intended to reproach us with how we are not real Americans, and I feel free to hit back.

I would disagree with you with this specific show. I doubt that the Shannons are being depicted as "real Americans."

There is a movement within the right to keep the poor from voting, on the grounds that they are neither competent nor honest enough to run a government. "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" plays right into this stereotype.

It's no surprise that the conservatives want to disqualify non-whites from voting. Shows which portray African-Americans as buffoons help with this; one merely has to look at the history of minstrel shows.

However, a majority of poor whites within the United States would prefer the Democrats to the Republicans (this isn't true in every state, however). "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" serves conservative purposes in the same way that minstrel shows did; here, the white poor are depicted as buffoons.

I have reactionary relatives who would like to take the right to vote away from the "47% percent." They might watch the Duck Dynasty con men and come away with the feeling that the Robertsons are real Americans and liberals aren't. They aren't doing that here; they're watching "Honey Boo-Boo" and getting the feeling that the white poor are such trash that we can't trust them, either.
