Stand Down

Here's something I just learned about the Republicans' malignant Benghazi smear.  I bet you didn't know it either:

A major part of the supposed conspiracy revolves around the fact that the Obama administration ordered a special forces unit in Libya to "stand down" and not go to Benghazi to free the Americans trapped there.

I'm sure that, like me, you would assume that this was a large, heavily armed unit, trained and prepared for hostage rescue.  Well, you'd be wrong.  It actually consisted of exactly four members, who were on a fact-finding mission, and who were equipped with nothing in the way of arms but their pistols.  They were instructed not to go to Benghazi, because the attack had already taken place, and there was nothing that four guys with pistols could accomplish.

Once again, the press has eaten whole the Republicans' lies and distortions, rather than revealing this fact, which makes a total mockery of Republican posturing on this issue.  But it just wouldn't be fair to the Republicans if we pointed out that their claims were actually groundless distortions.  If we did that, they wouldn't be able to say anything at all.

This, of course, isn't about Obama any more.  This is all about Hillary and 2016.  Three and a half years in advance, this is a show trial that wastes millions in partisan electoral politics, delivered to you by a House majority that cannot bring itself to take a single action that benefits the American public.  Welcome to democracy, Republican style.

And may I add that the endless round of Republican smears and lies has been abetted when Democrats decided to do nothing when Republicans committed the greatest act of Congressional misuse of power in the history of this country, by impeaching Bill Clinton.  And also when they did nothing when George W. Bush and Dick Cheney committed what Supreme Court Justice Jackson, at the Nuremberg trials, called the greatest war crime of all- starting a war of aggression.

If these corrupt, out of control criminals know that there will be no consequences for this sort of behavior, why should we expect them to ever stop?
