As Close To Fascism...

In case you haven't noticed (lucky you) Glenn Beck has been engaged in a week long contemptible attack on George Soros, accusing him of having collaborated with the Nazis (when he was a child) and indulging himself in a host of other classic antisemitic attacks on Soros.

If you are interested, here is an excellent article from Media Matters about the subject, by Simon Malloy.  A couple of remarks from the article:

"As close as I've heard on mainstream television to fascism...This isn't a country where people go on TV and national radio and talk up bigots who blame Jews for collapsing economies or fomenting communism in the United States....Nothing like it has ever been on American television before."

Well, that's America, 2010 style.  If the rich can't get the right to loot the entire economy through fair means, then I guess this is an acceptable alternate strategy.  And of course, the "liberal" press is content to just look the other way while things like this go on.  Who ever thought we would have to deal with this sort of thing in the United States?

I want to reiterate (though I shouldn't have to) that the accusations against Soros are complete fabrications, invented by the lifelong liar Lyndon LaRouche, and given no credence by anyone until they became a useful weapon in the right wing arsenal.  These people have no bottom line, and they will do anything to get what they want.  And if you want to know what "anything" means, I suggest you read a couple of books about Germany in the twenties and thirties.  The similarities between what happened there and what the Republican party is endeavoring to unleash here and now grow more obvious every day.

Any particular (not too dense) books you'd recommend?

So you are saying Soros never collapsed any economies before and has never been fined for doing so?

“Soros made his first billion in 1992 by shorting the British pound with leveraged billions in financial bets, and became known as the man who broke the Bank of England. He broke it on the backs of hard-working British citizens who immediately saw their homes severely devalued and their life savings cut drastically…almost overnight.”

In 1994 Soros crowed in “The New Republic” that “the former Soviet Empire is now called the Soros Empire.” The Russia-gate scandal in 1999, which almost collapsed the Russian economy, was labeled by Rep. Jim Leach, then head of the House Banking Committee, to be “one of the greatest social robberies in human history.” The “Soros Empire” indeed.

In 1997 Soros almost destroyed the economies of Thailand and Malaysia. At the time, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, called Soros “a villain, and a moron.” Thai activist Weng Tojirakarn said, “We regard George Soros as a kind of Dracula. He sucks the blood from the people.”

The website Greek national Pride reports, “[Soros] was part of the full court press that dismantled Yugoslavia and caused trouble in Georgia, Ukraine and Myanmar [Burma]. Calling himself a philanthropist, Soros’ role is to tighten the ideological stranglehold of globalization and the New World Order while promoting his own financial gain. He is without conscience; a capitalist who functions with absolute amorality.”

France has upheld an earlier conviction against Soros, for felony insider trading. Soros was fined 2.9 million dollars. (Source)

Recently, his native Hungary fined Soros 2.2 million dollars for “illegal market manipulation.” Elizabeth Crum writes that “The Hungarian economy has been in a state of transition as the country seeks to become more financially stable and westernized. [Soros’] deliberately driving down the share price of its largest bank put Hungary’s economy into a wicked tailspin, one from which it is still trying to recover.” (Source)

Lisa, you know very well that that is not what I said at all. I didn't say one word about Soros' career as a financier. What I did say is that the right, and Beck in particular, are engaging in an attack on Soros which involves the most longstanding antisemitic claims. You had no answer to that, so you started to talk about something else altogether.

And as for destroying economies, if I were you, I'd worry a little more about Reagan, Bush, Cheney and their Republican friends who destroyed ours.

It's a little late, but for the record, I just want to note that, as we would expect from a right winger, when Lisa was called on her deliberate misrepresentation of what I had to say, she had no reply.

Spread the lies and run, that's their strategy; and sad to say they are very proud of themselves for using it.
