Good Senate News

Take a look at this chart, from 538, which shows the odds of the Democrats taking back the Senate:
And note that the Democrats have been above 50% essentially since August.  If Democrats just get out and vote, we should be in good shape here.

Yes, turnout will be essential. People need to realize how important this is. Hillary will have a far easier time getting her Supreme Court judges through if we have a solid Senate majority.

Hillary herself does get it, though. That's why she's been campaigning in some states she's unlikely to win -- trying to help Senate candidates.

If the dems get a majority in the Senate, it will definitely be the time to do away with the filibuster. Let majority rule, and let's pass some appointments. The republicans can stew in their own bile!

The only problem with permanently doing away with the filibuster is that the Republicans, if they ever regain a Senate majority, could use their authoritarian bent to crush any opposition and finally ram through the rich guys' dream agenda.

One, it is not permanent.

Two, once it is done away with, it is unlikely the majority party would reinstatement it, but the dems should do what the people want and retain control of the senate.

Three, are you happy with the status quo?

Jerry, I hear what you are saying, and I think there is a lot of validity to what you have to say. I guess the point I am making is that, by this point in history, we have to assume that, whatever the Republicans do, it is going to be worse than our worst expectations. I think the Republicans will use anything the Democrats do as an excuse to do far worse things than we can ever imagine.

Boy, ain't that the truth. Best case scenario, Republican Party dies (thank you Trump!, Democratic Party becomes the new conservative party, and we get a new Progressive Party headed by the likes of Sanders and Warren.

turnout is very essential, as well as making sure enough Senate seats flip.

last I looked, the Democrats have currently flipped 3 maybe 4 states, meaning we're at a 50-50 tie between Dem/Progressive vs. GOP Senate control.

We REALLY NEED voter turnout for the Democratic Senate candidates in key states: NH, FL, IL, WI, NV, and AZ. I'd like to see the GA and IA Senate seats flip but I'm seeing bad polling numbers for them :(

I already voted early here in AZ. But, I'm a reliable voter, who turns out for every single thing. We need more people to go to the booth on off year elections, and stay tuned in for the local stuff too. I've had a couple of conversations with folks after I voted in years past, when I had my "I Voted" sticker on my shirt, and they stated they'd vote, but they didn't know much about the candidates and/or issues, aside from what was aired on TV. That can't be an excuse now, since I was able to drill down to non partisan candidates doing searches on the internet. Twenty minutes, and I had information from candidates Facebook pages, election websites, community newspaper articles, and voter guides from various outfits which had the candidates fill out responses about their vision for the seat they were running for. Not too hard these days to get a feel for those who are running for office, or for the various propositions on the ballot.

Now that the (D)'s have a large swatch of people motivated (for whatever reason) to turn out, they need to keep them engaged. 2018 and 2020 are going to be critical in seeing if we can fix the gerrymandering which put the (R)'s in positions which voting obviously didn't favor, but the maps they made did. If they can get that done, then the House can be brought back to working condition again, instead of a three way split between the (R)'s, the Tea-Party, and the (D)'s. Showing the government of the people is actually working for the people would go a long way in keeping new voters support.

I do fear eliminating the filibuster in the Senate, but he (R)'s have plainly shown they don't want to allow the proper operation of the government, unless it is on their terms. The (D)'s have bent over backwards in the past to try to get some support from the other side, but all they've gotten was burned. I say go ahead and get rid of the judicial filibuster - fill the ranks of the judiciary which have been left empty for far too long. Also, too, they should fulfill the conservatives worst fear, and put young, progressive people on any new vacancies in the Supreme Court, which will start putting paid to the bill of grievances they have accumulated.

I agree with you, Marc. If the Democrats by some miracle manage to regain control of Congress, they have to do whatever they can to try to accomplish their goals. I'm just saying that anything we do is going to be taken by the Republicans as an excuse to act out their abominable treachery.
