I remember reading about this guy in a book on Saudi Arabia called Inside the Kingdom, a few years back, and thinking he actually sounded quite progressive (by Saudi standards, at any rate). Still, I can't shake the nagging feeling that while he may've talked a good game, that's all a lot of what he said was: talk. On a lighter note, he seemed in pretty good shape for someone who was 90-odd when he finally died.

Now they are already claiming that the next guy is, as you say, quite progressive by Saudi standards. Of course, nothing ever changes there, but the compliant press puts the best face on the new dictator, even though he is somewhat to the right of Mussolini. I guess we can just thank our lucky stars that he isn't to the right of Hitler.

And now I read that the guy has Alzheimer's disease. The article I read said, in one of the most ludicrous comments about a world leader I have ever read, that he is known to have had lucid conversations with people as recently as last October. Man, that's a comfort, right?

She is apparently a big Glenn Beck fan, and believed that the base was a FEMA concentration camp. Think she's the only one out there? You just know this sort of thing is not going to end well.

  Of ocurse I am going to take the opportunity to talk about the Hamas attack on Israel.   First, I'd like to talk about my background, or baggage, regarding the country.   I have lived in Israel, some years ago.   This was not for religious reasons; I spent several months there working on a movie.   During pre-production, weeks of location scouting and shooting the movie, I was all over the country, and spent a fair amount of time in the West Bank, where we also shot.   This included a lot of places that normal tourists would not see, including predominantly Arab areas such as East Jerusalem, the Arab quarter of the old city, Ramla and the southern part of Jaffa, which is predominantly Arab.   It also included heavily Orthodox areas like Mea Shearim.   I dealt with Israeli Arabs, Palestinians and Bedouins.     Here are a few things I believe I learned there:   First of all, the Palestinians I knew were perfectly normal people with the same interest in living a safe, secure
