Republican World- It May Already Be Here

Are you ready for some of the most preposterous, and at the same time hateful, news that you have ever heard?  Well, here it is, from an article in Fortune magazine.

"Unpaid jobs: The new normal?...While businesses are generally wary of the risks of using unpaid labor, companies that have used free workers say it can pay off when done right"

I bet.

"People who work for free are far hungrier than anybody who has a salary, so they're going to outperform, they're going to try to please, they're going to be creative," says Kelly Fallis, chief executive of Remote Stylist, a Toronto and New York-based startup that provides Web-based interior design services. "From a cost savings perspective, to get something off the ground, it's huge. Especially if you're a small business."

You know, there's another word for people who work for free.  Can you think of it? Here's a hint: it begins with s.  And by the way, can someone get this woman a lobotomy?

"Like others who have used unpaid labor, Kelly Fallis recommends beginning with a very specific job description and conducting a thorough hiring process to screen out people who aren't going to give their all for nothing."

God forbid  these shiftless losers should only give eighty percent in return for nothing.

"Crystal Green, owner of Tallahassee-based event planning firm Your Social Butterfly, has had mixed results with unpaid staffers who didn't take their responsibilities seriously.  "It's better to have one decently paid person than nine unpaid people who are making it so difficult because they're slacking off or they're difficult to manage," Green says."

Responsiblities?  What kind of responsibilities do they have toward someone who has induced them to work for nothing?

They're difficult to manage, while they are working for you for free.   How dare they?  Where is their gratitude?

I think you just aren't looking back in history to get the right kind of manager.  Like this one:

See, motivation is so easy when you know the trick.  I bet that guy in the red shirt went to a top-rate business school to learn how to get the most out of unpaid employees.

"The benefit unpaid labor offers to a business is pretty clear...Sometimes, gratis work can even lead directly to a paid opportunity. "

Well, I guess starving the population until large numbers of people can be forced into servitude does offer some real benefits for business owners; you have to admit the logic of that.  And hey, look on the bright side- some day, some of them just might get paid for their work.  Hallelujah, we've reached the promised land!

This is the country that we are getting from all of the moronic voters who decided to turn our lives over to a pack of greed-maddened, sociopathic rich people. And you know what? as far as I can tell, a lot of people are just fine with it.

Just for the record: New Orleans, after hurricane Katrina had plenty of unpaid workers who came and rebuilt that city while it was ignored and abandoned by the Republican Bush administration. Uneducated immigrants came to do the unimaginably difficult manual labor required to just get the city on its feet again. Hundreds of them were hired by contractors who refused to pay them, because they knew they could get away with it. I knew one young man there who, when he went to get paid for four days of roofing work, had a pistol aimed at him and was told to get the fuck out of there. He left unpaid knowing he had no recourse. The city now has marginal legal aid for immigrant workers, but because of it's own complex and deep-seeded racism has never clearly acknowledged the debt it owes to this group of people who took on the work that no one else was willing to do.
I know this post is not completely on topic, but here it is anyway.

Well, I think it is right on topic. What you describe was an example of a very early stage of what is effectively a return to slavery through deprivation and brutality. What is described in my post is just a couple of more steps down the line toward the ultimate goal of the right wing leaders: a society in which normal people are so desperate that they can be forced into conditions that are indistinguishable from the most barbaric abuses of the past- things that we thought no sane person would ever desire again, no matter what the personal benefit to themselves. It is truly frightening how fast civilization can decay.

Even slaves were housed and fed, sometimes terribly, but even the worst would have it better than what you're describing.

Except for the occasional flogging, though I have no doubt the workers Anonymous has brought up suffered those as well.
