The Long Game
I am now ready, based on my experience, to predict what the Republicans are really up to in Washington. What is going on this week is just a trial run, to refine their strategy for shutting down the government. The real action is going to come in a few weeks, with the debt ceiling fight.
The Republicans will know after tonight that they indeed do have a way to stop anything from happening in Congress. They will use this power to refuse to allow a raising of the debt ceiling. At that point the economy of the United States and the entire world will stand at a precipice, ready to plunge into chaos.
Obama will be forced to use whatever power he has to avert this catastrophe. No matter what he does as President, it will be alleged by Republicans to be a violation of the Constitution, based on the totally fictitious argument that he has no right to do anything without Congressional approval. This will serve as the basis for them to institute impeachment proceedings against Obama. It will be their intention to draw the process out for a year, during which every Republican lie and smear will be paraded in front of the American people. Thus, the entire 2014 election campaign will be carried out before a background of the most vicious attacks on Obama and the Democrats, given a sickening veneer of respectability through the Republicans' gross misuse of their Congressional power. In the course of this coming year, we will see the massive economic resources that can be mustered by the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson, Karl Rove et. al. devoted to a virtually unendurable bombardment of the population with the most vile, hate filled propaganda, until most Americans will be just begging for it to stop.
In this environment, it is hard to predict what the outcome will be. If the Republicans take back the Senate, through their orgy of hatred, Obama and Biden will be removed from office. Who knows who, by that point, will have seized the speakership of the house from the hapless drunk who now holds it, and will then ascend to the Presidency. If the Republicans cannot do that, they very well may let the world economy collapse, try to blame it on Democrats and hope to win the 2016 Presidential race. Either way, we are likely in for a display of hatred and treachery that will surpass anything we have ever seen in the history of this country.
