The Most Abominable Smear of All

In case you are unaware of it, History Channel is currently broadcasting a ten-part miniseries called "The Bible," produced by a couple of right wing Christian fanatics.  Here is a picture of Satan from that show:

There is absolutely no language that I know to express the depths of degradation that are acceptable to the right in America today.

I'd say Satan has a masterful grasp on #The "History" Channel!

The real problem is presenting an interpretive work as a literal work. There are many interpretations of what the Bible means and to present a Christian interpretation as the ONLY interpretation is insulting. As far as the resemblance goes, we have more important eggs to fry.

Joseph,

As you can see, a major part of my blog is dedicated to revealing the true nature of the American right, which I believe is by far the greatest threat to our country which exists today. This depiction of Satan as Obama shows the shameless disregard for truth and decency which consumes the right today, and therefore is a fitting symbol of what is wrong with the United States.

We have no more important eggs to fry than fighting these evil people. Our entire political lives are consumed by them and their greed and hatred. Without them, we would have no problems running our lives that we couldn't easily deal with.

Dear Mr. Eagle (I”m post racial, color doesn’t matter),

You are my new favorite blog, I get upset when you haven’t written something. I agree that the current American right is the greatest evil we face. Basically they are sociopaths. One sign of sociopathy is caring more about things than people. Greed is their only goal. Ironically, they don’t believe in the god they can’t see, they only believe in the money they can. That said, History Channel says that the actor is a well know Morrocan actor and the similarity is merely a coincidence. I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. As I recall, but am too lazy to research, there was some controversy about George Bush looking like some character. Again, I agree that the right wing is the greatest challenge we face. I’ve been reading a book about Huey Long, the danger is another populist despot comes along. The money behind the right doesn’t understand that things have to change to stay the same. The left believes in community, the right believes in dog eat dog, it’s a shame that Obama won’t articulate that.

Joseph, what you have to say is absolutely correct. If you haven't read my blog for very long, you have probably missed the following, which is a major part of what I am up to: I have been watching the right wing in this country since the 1960's, and what I have learned is that American conservatism is about one thing and one thing only: greed, a.k.a. cut my taxes. That is all they really care about, and they will sell their children and grandchildren into penury to anyone that offers them a two hundred dollar tax cut. All the rest is just window dressing- the abortion, the prayer in the schools, the hatred for evolution, it is all about nothing but convincing themselves that, despite having given their whole lives over to the most vicious kind of avarice, they still somehow hold the moral high ground. The whole Conservative phenomenon of the last half century can indeed (as you say) be reduced to a sort of self-induced sociopathy.
That is why they worship Ronald Reagan. Reagan's greatest accomplishment as the moral leader of Conservatives, was to license them to utterly ignore the welfare of anyone but themselves- pretty much the definition of a sociopath.
And as for your remark about liberals and conservatives, I have said repeatedly that, if you want to know what the difference is, just think about the beginning of the Bible, when someone asked God, "Am I my brother's keeper?" If you answer yes, you are a liberal; if you answer no, you are a conservative.

Thanks for your contribution and your compliments; I hope to hear more from you in the future.

P.S. Except for the part about it not being deliberate that Satan looks exactly like Obama. I can't believe that you see the right so clearly, as you obviously do, but think that this resemblance is just an accident.

Back in 2008, I noticed the following quote from Michael Goldfarb;
It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman's memory of war from the comfort of mom's basement.

I first thought since only jobless losers play Dungeons and Dragons but a friend theorized it was because to many D&D is synonymous with Satanism.

Of course, Faux News then got around to making the conjecture more explicit with James Pinkerton's piece The Devil is in the Details: Another Obama Connection You Ought to Know About, asking the important byline question Could Lucifer play a role in this presidential election?

So, no, caling Obama the devil or the anti-christ and equating him with christian evil isn't a coincidence.

I’ve go to get this off my chest. The problem with “The Bible” as shown on The History Channel is that it is conservative Christian theology presented as history. The devil doesn’t exist in the Old Testament. Satan is a title, not a name, and his only active role is in Job, where he is an entity that tests Job. And Job is clearly a work of fiction, a great work but fiction nonetheless, and it was understood to be metaphorical even to the ancients. Satan is mentioned a couple more times but more in the poetic rather than literal sense. The notion that the serpent is the devil is a Christian idea. Believe what you want, I don’t care, pray to your left toe as far as I am concerned. But don’t present your views as history. We can always have a discussion about religion, but that discussion requires that every person in the discussion understand the axioms of the others. If Job is the best book of the Bible, the story of Adam and Eve is the worst. The point it tries to make is absurd at best. There is a book by Lawrence Kushner, God Was In This Place and I, I Did Not Know It that attempts to make sense of the story and really can’t. And by the way, Adam and Eve are not exiled from the Garden of Eden as punishment, rather. “Lest they eat from the tree of life and become like us.” I just saw the clip of the story of the binding of Isaac. It is astonishing how wrong an interpretation that is. First of all, Isaac was not a little boy when the binding occurs, he is over 30. Second, Abraham is not in his 40s, he is over 100. And while the Bible says Abraham is tested, it never says he passed the test. Of course, conservatives miss the point of the story, which is that Abraham is supposed to say, “No.” For conservatives, obedience is primary, morals be damned. A ruling class always wants subservience from the masses. If Abraham is supposed to refuse God’s supposed request, doesn’t that mean that we can all question what we are told to do? Here are the facts that conservatives won’t tell you about the story. First, God doesn’t tell Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, he tells him to “offer him up.” The implication is to sacrifice, but after Sodom and Gomorrah, wouldn’t it be reasonable to ask, “Exactly what do you mean?” Second, from the time that Abraham lifts the knife, God never speaks to him again. Third, Isaac does not go down the mountain with Abraham, the story ends with, “And Abraham returned to his men.” It doesn’t say what happened to Isaac. Clearly God had no further use for the a man willing to commit infanticide and preferred his son Isaac. Marx said that religion is the opiate of the masses, it is those religions that demand obedience above all else that is the problem. Milgram’s experiments proved how powerful, and destructive, that message is.
