Mean
I think the whole story of South Carolina comes down to this, as so succinctly put at Daily Kos:
That's it. The Republican "base" is tired of having people suggest that race hatred and greed are less than honorable characteristics, and they are angry about it. So they are ready to openly abandon any pretense that they give a damn about all of their religious cant and family values hooey, and get in line behind the meanest motherfucker they can find, even if he is an openly corrupt, grossly immoral son of a bitch who would steal his granny's coffin if it made him a nickel (and probably marry her too, if he thought it would advance his political career,) and who makes fools of them every time he opens his mouth and utters another preposterous lie.
Well, at least here in South Carolina, the first State to go to war to defend the high principle that, if you have enough money, you should be able to own people with less money. They've got quite a record here of siding with the lowest bastards they can find.
So, maybe Mitt went to sleep last night counting on the Republican "base" in the rest of the country being just a tiny bit less a pack of vicious, self-serving animals than they are here. Well, Mitt, as far as I can tell, this sort of thing is as catching as the Ebola virus among Conservatives, so don't hold your breath waiting for that. And here, we thought the 2012 election was going to be between the sane and the crazy. We didn't realize that things in this country have already gotten so bad that people are going to have the chance to choose between a human being and a mad dog.
"Gingrich won by being mean... His win is based on that. And the SC Republicans (and a large part of the Republican base) want mean."

Let me start by saying I agree with your take on Gingrich. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
Gingrich won by the righteous flaming he gave that cnn guy, and by implication, much of the news media.
I thought his rhetoric was over the top. He really couldn't imagine anything more despicable than that much-expected question? Really? Was it really more despicable than cheating on your wife?
But anyway, conservatives have been pining for someone to take a naily board to the media, and Newtie brung it.
He'll fade, and Romney will get the nod. After that it's anyone's guess. All you can bank on is this will be the dirtiest, nastiest campaign on record.
And the "hateful racists" meme is stale...
So, yeah Newt's gonna keep "fighting" the "Liberal Squishes" just like Reagan did.
Meanwhile, The Newt Gingrich Tax plan, has a higher Federal Tax Rate for struggling Americans making $40,000 (12.7%) than for those earning over $1,000,000 (11.9%). Additionally, taxes on Income from Capital Gains would be eliminated further enlarging the income inequality.
Newt is a solid member of the Republican Guard, out to harass, harm, oppress and defeat the 99%. Gingrich proudly proclaims himself a "Reaganite" and his tax proposal is right in line with Piss Down Your Back and Tell You It's Raining Reaganomics. Screw the Majority of Americans and solidify the Transfer of Wealth up to the Richest 1%.
Sit down and hold on to your chair:
Okay? Well, I agree with you.
I don't see anything righteous about Gingrich's response, but the Republicans ate his rage up with a spoon, that's for sure. And I further agree that Mitt is the odds-on favorite to get the nomination- Despite whatever the Republican rank and file would like, the rich guys who really pull the strings will get their way and have one of their own running against Obama. And all of the rest of the Republicans will be expected to fall in line and vote for a guy they despise.
Great system we've ended up with, huh?
I will say the democrats do take the cake when it comes irrelevant BS.
See-Howard,yahoooo,Dean,-Alan, die, Grayson-Nancy,we have to pass the bill to find out what's in it, Pelosi,- dead man walking, Reid and John, clueless, Conyers . Talk about a crew of numb nuts
