Too Little, Four Years Too Late
The Washington Post online today:
Everyone with half a brain knew since the beginning this was going to happen. And I don't mean the beginning of Trump's Presidency- I mean sometime around the time of Reagan, when it became perfectly obvious that the leaders of the Republican party had determined to turn the United States into an autocratic dictatorship. And just wait- the right wing lies about it are already flowing at full flood. Don't you know that this entire thing was orchestrated and carried out by Antifa? That is the line all over the wingnut world today, and they all instantly believe it, just like they instantly believe any of the thousands of lies they have been fed the last half century.
Within a few days, none of them will believe that the right or Donald Trump had a thing to do with this treason, and Trump still has two more weeks to give it another try. It was completely clear since the election that Trump was going to try to engineer a fascist coup before he was done with us, if there was any way he could convince himself that he could get away with it.
We are lucky that, this time at least, Republicans have been as incompetent as they have been treasonous, so his coup turned out to be nothing but a cartoon rendition of Boris Yeltsin staring down a tank. Of course the ultimate coward Trump was hiding in the White House rather than leading his rebellion, but you can be sure that he is going to give this one more try before he goes away, if he is not arrested.

I'm hoping this tragedy will be the high water mark of the radical Right. But I know what country we live in, and how much of it is still brainwashed and ignorant.
Our war on fascism will never end. Eternal vigilance and maximum voter participation are all we have, so we'd better keep up our struggle against the enemies of democracy and their domestic terrorist foot soldiers.
