Truth From an Ex- Republican

I must draw your attention to the statement prepared by right wing retired Federal Judge J. Michael Luttig, for presentation to the January 6th committee.

J. Michael Luttig

For many years, Luttig was a mainstay of Republican attempts to twist the American legal system to do what they wanted.  Apparently, in retirement, he is having a religious conversion or something.  It is a crime that we have to count on someone like him to tell us the truth, when there seems to be hardly a Democrat alive willing to speak it,* but there we are.  Just a couple of excerpts of his comments:

"A stake was driven through the heart of American democracy on January 6, 2021, and our democracy today is on a knife’s edge.

America was at war on that fateful day, but not against a foreign power. She was at war against herself. We Americans were at war with each other -- over our democracy.

January 6 was but the next, foreseeable battle in a war that had been raging in America for years, though that day was the most consequential battle of that war even to date.

These senseless wars are of our own making, and they are now being waged throughout the land, in our city centers and town squares, in our streets and in our schools, where we work and where we play, in our houses of worship -- even within our own families. These wars were conceived and instigated from our Nation’s Capital by our own political leaders collectively and they have been cynically prosecuted by them to fever pitch, now to the point that they have recklessly put America herself at stake."

"On January 6, 2021, revolutionaries, not patriots, assaulted America and American democracy. The walls of all three of our institutions of democracy were scaled and breached on that appalling day. And almost two years thence, one of America’s two political parties cannot even agree whether that day was good or bad, right or wrong. Worse, it cannot agree over whether January 6 was needed, or not. Needed or not."

This barely begins to cover the extent of his statement, and his outrage at what his own party is doing. My only objection is that, of course, he presents these abominations as the sole work of Trump and his minions, refusing to admit that his party has been openly working toward the destruction of our democracy for decades, during most of which he served as a reliable party ally.  I have certainly been presenting evidence of Republican treason as long as my blog has existed (about 12 years,) and in fact first started trying to point this out as long ago as the Reagan administration, when it became perfectly obvious to me what was going on in this country.  And I can hardly claim to be the only one; the truth was there for anyone to see.

All in all, this is a masterful statement, the whole text of which can be found here.   I beg you to take the time to read it-  it is so rare that any national leader of any party is willing to state the simple truth these days.  My only real reservation is that I can't see anything, even this strongly presented, penetrating the iron curtain that surrounds the minds of Republicans today.  They will, all seventy million of them, go on marching toward fascism with their eyes wide open and their hearts locked shut.  What happens then?  I guess nobody really knows.

*Even my Congressman, Adam Schiff, who has done far more than anyone else to reveal this treachery, still will not speak the truth this clearly.
