He said winning support from local leaders, some of whom see the Taliban fighters not as oppressors but as their Muslim brothers, was proving tougher than expected. The military side of the campaign, originally scheduled to surge in June and finish by August, is now likely to extend into the fall." The involvement in this war is going to prove to be one of the most phenomenal mistakes that the weak Obama has made as President. This is really a subsidiary issue, but I have noticed a number of left wing commenters objecting to the fact that Helen Thomas was treated so differently than, say, Rand Paul or Pat Buchanan, whose racist views are so much more pervasive than Thomas's. Of course that is true, but it is not because Thomas has been treated unfairly. It is because we on the left have a very low tolerance for open racism, while on the right, which has built itself on a foundation of race hatred, they can't afford the luxury of kicking people out just because they are racists sons of bitches, or they won't have anyone left.

Here is a very good article from Talking Points Memo about the two teenagers caught in New Jersey trying to go to Somalia to join the Jihad against America. This article relates these two to other outbreaks of teenage rebellion over the decades. I'd like to add my observation that, whenever a nest of juvenile "satanists" is uncovered, they are almost invariably the children of evangelical Christians. These alienated kids pick whatever they think is most frightening and abominable to their parents, as the best way to get back at them; their particular choice, be it satanist, neo-nazi, belligerent rapper or would-be Islamic terrorist. That doesn't mean that, with the right assistance, they couldn't do something truly horrible; but it would be wise not to draw too many conclusions from their behavior.
