Mr. SMITH Goes To Washington

We are all familiar with the legendary SMOTI, the Stupidest Man On The Internet, aka Jim Hoft, whose website Gateway Pundit befouled itself again this week when one of his "reporters," one Jacob Wohl, made an utter fool of himself with one of the most colossally stupid lies ever heard, when he convened a press conference to allege that Robert Mueller forcibly dragged a woman out of a hotel bar in New York (in plain view of the other customers, apparently,) forced her up to his hotel room and then violently raped her, finishing with telling her his name and telling her that he was the head of the FBI, so she had better keep her mouth shut.  Boy, that beats Judge Kavanaugh's youthful dalliances by a long shot.  Well, the details of this almost incomprehensibly incompetent plot have received a great deal of coverage in the blogosphere, so I won't rehash them here.  For those who want to know more, I suggest this article from Wonkette, which pretty much takes a perfect tone toward the whole thing.

What I do want to cover in this post is another accusation against Mueller, which is equally insane, but which was forced out of our attention by the clowning of the Gateway Pundit guys.  This alleged malfeasance comes to us not from the SMOTI, but from a man I call the SMITH; the Stupidest Man In The House, Texas representative Louie Gohmert.  Here's the story, from Crooks and Liars:

"MUELLER’S MINIONS HELPED MOBSTER WHITEY BULGER ELIMINATE MOB COMPETITORS, says Congressman Louie Gohmert...In the extensive report, Gohmert covered Mueller’s shady past of helping mobster Whitey Bulger by eliminating mob competitors.

...it was Mueller, first as an assistant US attorney then as the acting U.S. attorney in Boston, who wrote letters to the parole and pardons board throughout the 1980s opposing clemency for the four men framed by FBI lies."

So let's see if I have this straight now.  Robert Mueller, an extremely successful prosecutor during the eighties, put mobsters in prison and kept them there.  We can all agree about that.  As Louie's story goes, this was all done not to enforce Federal law, nor to advance his own career, but because Mueller was a corrupt tool of Whitey Bulger, another mobster.  No evidence offered to support this assertion, and as Crooks and Liars continues:

"...retired federal judge and Harvard Law School senior lecturer Nancy Gertner set the record straight in a New York Times editorial:

"There is no evidence that the assertion is true. I was the federal judge who presided over a successful lawsuit brought against the government by two of those men and the families of the other two, who had died in prison. Based on the voluminous evidence submitted in the trial...I can say without equivocation that Mr. Mueller, who worked in the United States attorney’s office in Boston from 1982 to 1988, including a brief stint as the acting head of the office, had no involvement in that case. He was never even mentioned."

So there you go.  Mueller was in cahoots with one mobster, which is proven by the fact that he put other mobsters in jail, which he only did to improve the business prospects of the first mobster, for which he in return received the payment of... apparently nothing.

Maybe not quite as colorful as the rape story, but equally outrageous.  Louie Gohmert should be driven out of public life for this disgusting smear, but instead his massively red district is about to easily send him back to the House, where he can continue working on behalf of the people, as he did in this case.

These clowns know that their audience isn't interested in facts or details, and so will throw out these salacious bits of nonsense knowing that blind rage will ensue.

It gets worse. There is a man named Albano. He was on the parole board that heard the the prisoners applications. He says he saw a letter from Mueller opposing parole. The judge who oversaw the prisoners lawsuits reviewed all the records and says there was no such letter. The lawyers representing the plaintiffs say there is no such letter. The Boston Globe reporters reviewed all the documents and also say there is no such letter. Alan Dershowitz, relying on Albano, said Mueller should be investigated. The right wing went nuts. Then Dershowitz read the Globe report and said that he could no longer say there was such a letter but that it might have somehow been removed and therefore Mueller should be investigated. Of course the simple, parsimonious explanation is that Albano made a mistake but to start engaging in massive, absurd conspiracy theories is what the right wing does.
