The Madness of Ben Carson is Beyond Comprehension
And yet he leads the pack of Republican Presidential contenders. Case in point, uncovered by Talking Points Memo: an address this man delivered to a Seventh Day Adventist college several years ago, in which he discussed the Pyramids:
The purpose of the Pyramids, and their development over a thousand years from earlier Mastaba tomb types, is an irrefutable fact. The fact that they are 95% solid rock should make even the most gullible person know that they were not built to store grain, or anything else except the bodies and possessions of dead rulers. And they were built by a guy from the Bible? This man is so delusional that he has apparently fallen for a theory which is so crazy and nonsensical that only a seriously deranged person could possibly believe it. And by deranged, I mean literally so mentally damaged that he is incapable of separating fantasy from reality.
By the way, did I mention that this person is currently the frontrunner in the Republican race for President? Oh, I did? Just wanted to make sure.
So, I want to propose something that, at this point, should be clearly justified. I want to know why this incredibly successful brain surgeon suddenly retired at the age of 50, when he presumably had many productive years ahead of him. We need to find out what is going on here, before it is too late.
Then, it might be a good idea to examine the mental stability of the people who support Carson.
Oh, and just as an afterthought, when Ben says:
“My own personal theory is that Joseph built the pyramids to store grain...when you look at the way that the pyramids are made, with many chambers that are hermetically sealed, they’d have to be that way for various reasons," Carson said. "And various of scientists have said, ‘well, you know there were alien beings that came down and they have special knowledge and that’s how-’ you know, it doesn’t require an alien being when God is with you.”

Ben, what is God but an alien being who came down with special knowledge?
Just wondering.
Update: Ben Carson announced today (11-5) that he still believes this idiocy. I like Driftglass' suggestion that this is because the alternative is to admit that some government somewhere actually built something.

What scientists?
This article from Forbes notes that the consensus among archaeologists is that these sites were all created by humans.
Ken Feder, who is quoted in the article, has stated elsewhere that archeological sites all contain at least one of the following two things:
(1) Garbage, or
(2) Lost objects.
I, for one, wonder what extraterrestrial garbage would be like. So far, none of the pseudoarchaeologists peddling the "ancient aliens" nonsense has given us this information.
My own personal theory is that evolution built the human skull to store brain -- not shit, which is what Carson seems to be keeping in his.
The fact that Carson would opine on this without looking into the basic archaeology you cite, and that he apparently attributes von-Däniken-style drivel to "scientists", tells us he's just babbling and has no clue what he's talking about -- as if that weren't already obvious.
Now, I'm sort of an Elder Scrolls guy myself. I suspect the Pyramids were temples of Akatosh.
This is another example of the “I believe it is so, therefore it is” that has nearly given me an aneurism in debating dickheads.
This mode of thinking will be the death of civilization, because fact becomes irrelevant. ‘I believe the moon is a potato, and my mommy told me everyone is entitled to an opinion – therefore it is perfectly reasonable for me to say it is a potato, and all you smarty pants NASA people don’t know any better than me’.
More than that… scope the hostility to intellectualism that the Right spreads among the masses. They will actually imply it is possible to have “too much education”. The implication that to be a scientist necessitates moral failure. That accumulated knowledge leads to pride and therefore evil.
This is why I loathe people like Carson, or Palin, or Jindal. They are corrosive to the very processes by which mankind has dug itself out of scratching an existence amid rocks and ponds on a savannah somewhere, out of the dark ages that countless generations had to endure while they held onto forbidden knowledge under threat of torture and death. To ego-driven pig-ignorant demagogues like these, genuine enlightenment, actual discovery, two plus fucking two equals four is a threat to their quite ludicrous moral superiority complex.
And they don’t get taken apart for it…
They make statements that wouldn’t get a pass in any elementary school I know of but they get away with it.
The media need to grow a pair. Reporters need to become a kind of intellectual assassin. If you talk shit in a setting of aspiration to public office, a hundred different voices should be calling you out on it. I don’t care if it is the pyramids or the debt ceiling. If you get away with talking shit on one subject you will get away with it on all subjects.
Somebody at the supposedly liberal, but anti-semitic cannonfire.blogspot.com, made the same comment about Meier's Civilisation (British spelling?). I still don't know what that is. I guess I'm just way too old.
