The Most Abominable Thing Republicans Ever Did

“Do not call up that which you cannot put down.”- Howard Phillips Lovecraft

And as you know, there's a lot of competition for that honor from a party that caused a worldwide depression and was well on their way to causing another, fought to leave Hitler alone in World War II, but was all for the criminal aggressions in Vietnam and Iraq, in which we killed millions of innocent civilians, worked for a hundred years to impoverish the American people in order to enrich their true base of rich sociopaths, fought and continues to fight the equality that is supposed to be a central value of our country, works to deprive people of health care and basic economic security in order to enrich the owners of corporations, openly corrupts our electoral process without a concern, and on and on.

But there is one Republican scheme, and an almost unbelievably successful one, which is in a way the mother of all of these horrors, and which is proving the most irreversible: the deliberate moral perversion of a large segment of the American people, molding them into a mindless mob, capable of being driven in any direction by those who are themselves immoral enough to be willing to pull the right manipulative levers.

And realize what this means in our country today.  With thirty percent of the public seemingly haven given total control of their lives over to Republican demagogues, the Republicans only have to win over 21% more of the voting populace to win elections, while the Democrats have to win 51%.  And let us note that even this massively rigged game is too much for them to win, proven by the constant and universal Republican efforts to cheat in elections.

At some point in the last century, the Republican party realized that they could never win elections with their real program of stealing the nation's wealth to enrich maybe two thousand families who would agree in return to provide the financing for their miserable campaigns.  This has generally been seen as a political goal, but it was carried out by a moral, or perhaps immoral campaign, which required that their voters first of all be induced to have absolute contempt for the truth and anyone who dared speak it, and then to utterly abandon all notions of decency, equality and even self-preservation in order to cast their votes based on nothing but hatred and greed- things which, costing nothing, Republicans were willing to supply them in infinite quantities, as an alternative to a decent life in a country that any moral person could be proud of.

In setting about to do this, the Republican party found fertile ground in a group that already made up a quarter of the population, and had already been induced to give up their own moral judgment in favor of blind obedience to their leaders: Evangelical Christians.

I have made the point before that, as far as I can see, Evangelical Christianity is not a religion at all.  Anyone who can read a couple of pages of the bible knows perfectly well what Christ required of Christians:

"For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
“He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

A challenging demand to his followers, and one which Evangelical Christians have totally abandoned, preferring instead to base their faith on things like stopping abortion, hating homosexuals, denying evolution, and a host of other issues that Christ never said one word about, but which have one common feature: they allow these people to claim that they are morally superior, while not demanding one shred of sacrifice from them.  And as long as they mindlessly accept this sick distortion of Christianity, and do and think exactly as they are told, they are rewarded with the right to regard everyone not like them as subhumans, who can legitimately be treated in any manner they please.  They thus turn themselves into easy pickings for crooked politicians:

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you."- Lyndon Baines Johnson

A warning from Johnson, but a road map for Republicans.

Let me note here that this is where their Bond villainesque scheme went wrong, thus earning the quotation with which I led off this post.  For this group of ignorant, hate filled voters has now taken on a life of its own, and placed an open traitor, criminal and con man in the White House, for the sole reason that he is the person who was willing to stoop the lowest to stimulate their worst instincts.  And two years of this horror has barely convinced a single one of them to accept the truth; they may well be a permanent open wound on our country.

Once they have these suckers on board, the Republicans only need the support of a few more Americans who are willing to stab themselves in the back without being told to every Sunday by a grifting con man in a pulpit, and they have an almost insurmountable control over the country.  It is proving to be a nearly impossible task to rid our nation of someone as monstrous as Trump; next time around the Republicans will replace him with a candidate every bit as criminal, but slightly more plausible, and then what will happen?

The Republican party has created the perfect conditions for the rise of something which, while not the same as the Nazi party, will be equally horrible.  And they are well on their way to realizing that dream: a country that they are free to ravage without concern that enough of its people will object to do anything about it.

Moral perversion is the foundation and Sine qua non of the far Right. We need to call it for what it is. Evil.

They are waging war on truth, decency, justice, equality and democracy with lies, indecency, injustice, inequality and authoritarianism.

They needed to appeal to the dark side of human nature to exploit xenophobia, racism, bigotry, resentment, anger, and hate.

Their propaganda network has been successful beyond their dreams. It produced the Tangerine Tyrant in the Oval Office.

Bottom line. The Republican Party is corrupt to the core and Trump is evil. Those who support the party of Trump wittingly, or unwittingly, support evil.

Sorry to reply so late, but I am getting so fatigued by all of this. Of course, you are absolutely right, but I am starting to think that the tale is about over for this country. And half of the people here are going to be cheering their reduction to serfdom.
