The Adults in the Room

Your Republican party.

Today, Marco Rubio has lowered himself to making jokes about the alleged size of Donald Trump's penis.

And Marco is the choice of the supposedly rational Republicans.

Republicans are rapidly evolving the most totally dysfunctional process that could ever be imagined to select their candidate for President.  And the results- Trump, Rubio, Cruz- certainly are what one would expect when selecting politicians by who could tell the dirtiest joke.

Thomas Talks!

It's only been a couple of weeks since Antonin Scalia kicked the bucket, and today,

Clarence Thomas Asked Questions from the Supreme Court Bench!!!

Thomas has not asked a question from the bench in over ten years.

Things we will never know:  What did Big Nino have to hold over Thomas, to keep him silent for ten years?  Was one Supreme Court Justice being blackmailed by another one?

What a question, huh, and what a sad state when we even have to ask it.

Evangelicals for Trump!

The press still doesn't get it, despite daily lessons for decades now.  The latest example: this article in today's New York Times, by Trip Gabriel, which features the following hopelessly deluded comments:

"OKLAHOMA CITY — It is one of the prime paradoxes of the 2016 election: A twice-divorced candidate who has flaunted his adultery, praised Planned Parenthood and admitted to never asking for God’s forgiveness is the favorite of the Christian right...

Mr. Trump’s appeal with the religious right is debunking some long-held maxims about evangelical voters, showing that they are not monolithic; that they do not fall neatly in step with evangelical leaders, many of whom endorsed Mr. Cruz; and that within evangelical ranks lie fault lines of class and culture."

All these years and the press has refused to figure out what should be so obvious:  The "Christian right" is a gigantic con.  None of these guys has really ever cared about a damned thing except the eternal Conservative goal: cut my taxes; with a small side dish of hatred to spice things up.

Here is what I have been pointing out, for as long as I have had this blog, and for decades before: Evangelical Christianity, at least as it exists in the United States, is a phony religion.  Its entire purpose is to deny the clear teachings of Jesus Christ, and substitute for them a host of ideological purity tests (e.g. being against abortion, denying evolution, etc.) which allow Evangelicals to tell themselves that they are actually the moral people in the world, while demanding nothing of them. This allows them to throw the poor, the sick, the strangers among us, the prisoners, out of the train, in order to satisfy their greed, while still claiming the moral high ground.

That's it; and it is a truth that should have been more than obvious to anyone who really looked at them, for a long time now.  But as a corollary of "both-siderism" the press is not allowed to question the sincerity of any belief held on the right, so we are endlessly fed the absurd myth that these people believe in anything but themselves and their own entitlement.

Looked at this way, the Evangelical support for Trump is not a "prime paradox;" it is an entirely predictable phenomenon.  They say that the test of a theory is its ability to predict the future, but the failure of the mainstream cant about the right to do that will accomplish nothing in the way of challenging that theory.  And so, on we go:  Bernie is just the same as Trump, Democrats caring about other people is an equally valid moral choice as Republicans only caring about themselves, liberal truth is no different from Conservative lies, black is white, down is up, and it all makes no difference, because politics is just about personalities and the horse race, and the choice of a government never ever affected people's lives.  And it will be the same this time, right?  Because Hillary having taken some money from Wall Street makes her exactly the same as Trump being a lying, fascist bully.  Being sane and being crazy are really the same thing, and lucky for us too, because so many Americans are joining the crazy side.

The Idiocy

It's been really hard for me to get up the interest in posting anything lately.  Who can have any doubt about the sick spectacle that is our electoral process this year; and yet the press insists on ignoring the monster in the room, and pretending that everything is just fine.  And that's all they want to talk about.

The Republicans had a "debate" a couple of days ago which was virtually devoid of any real content, and which consisted of nothing but the three top vote getters engaging in an insult competition, in which one of them, with Olympic class skills, was clearly going to emerge victorious, having proven absolutely nothing of note.

The following picture, which I stole from Crooks and Liars, pretty much encapsulates the whole thing to me:
Pretty much says it all, huh?

After their depraved performances in the last couple of electoral cycles, I thought the Republicans were going to have to work really hard to sink to an even lower level of depravity, but I was wrong.

And that is all that is, apparently, going on in this country.  How often can people repeat it before dying of boredom?

Still Don't Get It

Digby, at Salon this morning:

"At this point, watching Donald Trump calling Ted Cruz the worst liar he’s ever seen and implying that he’s got a mental disorder doesn’t even phase the press. That’s just Trump being Trump. But it is noteworthy that Marco Rubio’s supposedly “high road” campaign is tarring Cruz with the same message. Even poor old Ben Carson gets in on the act, fulminating over Cruz’s alleged “dirty trick” in Iowa in which some of his campaign workers phoned into the caucuses with a bogus report that Carson was dropping out of the race and told them to vote for Cruz instead."

Sorry, Digby, but what you should really be spending your energy on is the fact that they are right- Cruz is a compulsive liar, and does have a clear mental disorder, and yet a large number of Republican leaders and people in the press still insist on portraying him as a legitimate choice to be a national leader.

In fact the whole Republican party consists of compulsive liars with mental disorders, but everyone wants to pretend that it's all okay.  Why, isn't stoking hatred and inciting violence the way that our country always picked its leaders?   Nothing to see here- both parties are the same, right?  Hillary is just the same as Cruz, except for that minor mental disorder issue, and the compulsive liar thing, so you might just as well vote for one as for the other.  Then, when Cruz is elected (because no Republican is ever going to fall for the "both parties are the same" crap) we can have Phil Robertson as our U.N. ambassador, and I guess, Cliven Bundy on the Supreme Court, and the Koch brothers as joint secretaries of the Treasury and Labor.  That will make the country run just great, if by great, you mean, crash into a burning mess and disappear from world history for all time, to be replaced by a bunch of tinhorn dictatorships, and maybe if we are lucky, a few sane areas on the coasts.  Well, maybe that's what we deserve.

Sedition

As the Republican party moves ever closer to out and out rebellion, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the actual text of the federal laws governing sedition.  So, here are the relevant sections of those laws.

I want to add that I found it interesting, in reading this, to realize that the Bundys and their cohorts have gone far over the line separating protest from sedition.  It will be interesting to see if the government has the sense to hold them responsible for their behavior.

Anyway, here goes. first, a non-legal definition of sedition:

"Sedition usually involves actually conspiring to disrupt the legal operation of the government and beyond expression of an opinion or protesting government policy."

Well, if this were the wording of the law itself, there is no question that the Republicans are committing sedition in many ways.  The actual laws are not quite so clear cut, but still make an interesting read.

18 U.S. Code § 2384 - Seditious conspiracy

If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

This one certainly applies to the Bundys.  I guess whether it applies to current Republican behavior depends what "by force" means.  Is it "force" to threaten to bring the government to a halt and destroy the credit rating of the country to get your way?  If so, this would apply to the Republican party too.

18 U.S. Code § 2389 - Recruiting for service against United States

Whoever recruits soldiers or sailors within the United States, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction thereof, to engage in armed hostility against the same; or

Whoever opens within the United States, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction thereof, a recruiting station for the enlistment of such soldiers or sailors to serve in any manner in armed hostility against the United States—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

In connection with this section, it is interesting to notice the behavior of Darryl Issa, who recently called for the military to refuse to carry out the President's orders:

"Issa said it was up to U.S. military leaders to decide whether to follow Obama's plan, which he said was unlawful.
"Are they going to obey an unlawful order, an unlawful order to move people from Guantanamo, an unlawful order to close the base?" he said."

Cutting pretty close to breaking this law, as far as I can see.  Well, on we go:

8 U.S. Code § 2385 - Advocating overthrow of Government

Whoever knowingly or willfully advocates, abets, advises, or teaches the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying the government of the United States or the government of any State, Territory, District or Possession thereof, or the government of any political subdivision therein, by force or violence, or by the assassination of any officer of any such government; or

Whoever, with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of any such government, prints, publishes, edits, issues, circulates, sells, distributes, or publicly displays any written or printed matter advocating, advising, or teaching the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force or violence, or attempts to do so; or

Whoever organizes or helps or attempts to organize any society, group, or assembly of persons who teach, advocate, or encourage the overthrow or destruction of any such government by force or violence; or becomes or is a member of, or affiliates with, any such society, group, or assembly of persons, knowing the purposes thereof—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

If two or more persons conspire to commit any offense named in this section, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

As used in this section, the terms “organizes” and “organize”, with respect to any society, group, or assembly of persons, include the recruiting of new members, the forming of new units, and the regrouping or expansion of existing clubs, classes, and other units of such society, group, or assembly of persons.

I want to repeat a section of that:

"Whoever, with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of any such government, prints, publishes, edits, issues, circulates, sells, distributes, or publicly displays any written or printed matter advocating, advising, or teaching the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force or violence...'

Again, there is that nebulous term "force."  If force requires actual armed threats, then, Bundys yes, Republicans, no.  It hardly bears mentioning, however, that the Republicans' ability to "force" the country into a devastating collapse if they don't get their way, represents a far greater threat to all of us than the pathetic Bundys and their patriot friends.

18 U.S. Code § 2383 - Rebellion or insurrection

Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

Bundys, again, yes.  Republicans?  The many who gave public support to their behavior are guilty as well.  As for refusing to carry out their sworn constitutional duty, I guess that this would depend on how much damage they are really capable of causing.

In summation, have the Congressional Republicans crossed the line into sedition?  Acting on what I am sure is massive legal advice, they have certainly come right up to the line, and in a few instances have gone over it.  But the reality is that it would take a truly egregious act of sedition for the government to hold them responsible for their crimes, so they are clearly going to get away with their betrayal; at least as far as it has gone at this point.

Well, never fear.  If we have learned anything, it is that there is a sizable portion of the Republican leadership and base that intend to keep pushing this boundary, until they have clearly betrayed all of the rest of us.

What then?  Stay tuned.

Constitution

I think it is an appropriate time to give some consideration to the following excerpt, from Article 2, section 2 of the Constitution, that document beloved of all right wingers:

"He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law"

Please observe that this section does not say, "with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, if they feel like getting off their damned asses long enough to do their job."  The President is required by the Constitution to appoint a new Justice in the case of a vacancy, and the Senate is required to deal with it in a forthright manner, not turn it into a partisan political vendetta.  Any Senator who refuses to do this is violating his sworn Constitutional duty, as anyone that can read English can see; and any Senator who refuses to do this is demonstrating that, despite endless blabbing about original intent, he cares absolutely nothing about the Constitution.

As if we were in any doubt about how much these jackasses really care about the Constitution.

And let's remember this part of Article 2, section 2:

"The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session."

It is high time that Obama make it clear that, if Republican Senators carry out their threats to damage the government, he will make use of this power, the minute they leave town to pander to their hate-filled base.  And if that happens, I suggest he pick a Justice just as far to the left as Scalia was to the right.  If such a character even exists.

1928

The last time the Republicans won the Presidency without a Nixon or a Bush on the ticket.

Thanks to Thom Hartmann for pointing that out.

Jeb!

Well, I've got something else to blame Jeb! for, before the world forgets that he exists- he made Green Eagle look like an idiot for predicting that, eventually, the rich guys would have their way, and make Jeb! the Republican nominee.

At several points in the last few months, Jeb seemed to be steadying himself and moving back into the race, which should have been easy for him to do given the competition and his huge financial advantage. But every single time, he revealed himself to be the most pathetic candidate that anyone can remember.  And don't tell me that this is a result of some subconscious desire to sabotage himself.  No one gets this far in political life without wanting the prize; it is just that Bush showed a combination of almost unbelievable stupidity and a sense of entitlement unknown outside of the first sons of British Dukes, and the Kardashians.

And I guess that I am also guilty of underestimating a force that I have talked about for years, since long before it became an acceptable topic in polite discourse: the deliberate manufacturing, by the leaders of the GOP, of a huge cadre of people so inflamed by hatred and greed that their most obvious self interest, or the most basic human decency, no longer means a thing to them.  I guess I wrongly thought that, in the end, the real owners of the Republican party would manage to get their monster back in its cage, and things would move on as before, with a nominee like Romney, Bushes I and II, Dole, Reagan, Jerry Ford and Nixon- a nominee owned lock stock and barrel by the rich, and carefully trained to hide what he will actually do in office.

Well, if I miscalculated, so did they, and in a much worse way.  We now have only three real Republicans in the race, and all of them (despite Marco Rubio's efforts to hide the fact in his case) are creatures of the insane right.  And we must never forget that, in a nation where money can get a grotesquely unsuitable guy like George W. Bush close enough to the White House to steal it, and where the press is going to do everything it can (as with Bush and all the rest of them) to hide their catastrophic unsuitability to be President, anything can happen from here on out.

Gaffe

We know what a gaffe is supposed to be: when a politician says something really stupid.  What a gaffe really is, if you are a Republican, is when you accidentally tell the truth.

The classic recent example was when Representative Kevin McCarthy stated out loud something that everyone in the country with half a brain knows perfectly well: that the Benghazi hearings were a lying political witch hunt designed to destroy Hillary Clinton, with absolutely no substance.  For the crime of saying that out loud, McCarthy had the speakership of the House taken away from him.

Well, any number of Republicans have now collaborated in perpetrating the latest gaffe.  This happened in the day after Antonin Scalia died, when they openly announced that they were never going to give a consideration to anyone that Barack Obama nominated.

Now, let us deal with the reality here.  Remember those people with half a brain I referred to above?  Well, they all know something else, and that is that the Congressional Republicans are never going to let an Obama nomination get through the Senate.  As usual, the gaffe was stating the truth out loud.  They could have made all sorts of disingenuous statements about how seriously they were going to take this Constitutionally mandated process, and then just refused to let any Obama nominee survive the process- which we all know is exactly what they intend do.  Instead, they let this very ugly cat out of the bag, and are now counting on the press to let them walk it back without consequences, which it undoubtedly will.

Secret assaults on the Constitution work so much better than public ones, particularly for Republicans, who swear such fealty to that document.  Of course, anyone who is watching knows that the Constitution means nothing to them, except when it can be twisted to appear to support what they already intended to do; this is just one more example of that.

The Full Crazy

If you want a real taste of how utterly insane the right is these days, click on this link to a Right Wing Watch post, and listen to the first audio excerpt, which explains how Obama killed Antonin Scalia as part of a pagan human sacrifice ritual.

I repeat something I have had to say over and over again.  There is absolutely zero possibility of rational discourse with people like this.  Half insane delusion and half an in-your-face demonstration that they will do anything, no matter how loathsome, to get what they want, this represents something that is beyond the pale of normal political behavior to deal with.

If you wonder how the Nazis got the German people to go along with their insanity, the answer can be found in this short excerpt.

Wingnut Wrapup

Let's just start this Wingnut Wrapup off with this wonderful post by the marauding infant, Ben Shapiro, over at Breitbart:

"Antonin Scalia’s Death Could Mark End of Constitution"

Now, there's nothing to stop the lizard people from taking over!  Any way, here are some of the wonderful comments from this post:

"If either Trump, Sanders, or Hillary gets elected (or one of the GOP Establishment's candidates), the Constitution is indeed finished.  Only Cruz is a Constitutionalist, even many of Cruz's detractors on both sides will admit this.  Save the Constitution 2016! Cruz 2016!"

Whatever.  Apparently, believing that the United States should be run by right wing religious lunatics makes you a Constitutionalist.  Those damned liberal teachers never told us that when we went to school.

"With Scalia's passing we may not even have elections, O'hammed is now our king. "

O'hammed.  That's a new one, even for Green Eagle

"Nothing compares to what we tax payers gave up to IRAN with the 150 BILLION $$ payoff to use to finance their nuclear bomb"

You mean the $150 billion of their own money that we gave back to them?  I guess "we tax payers" were fools for not stealing it, and then giving it to the Koch Brothers, where it really belongs.

"Sure, I'll bet you 20 upvotes O'hammed comes up with some crisis to declare martial law."

You've been betting on that for seven years now.  Too bad you are too gutless to bet real money on it.  I'll tell you what: Green Eagle will bet you $100,000 that Obama doesn't declare martial law.  Get back to me when you are ready to accept the wager.

"Obama is seeking to change the War Powers Act to include authority to declare Martial Law anywhere in the world including the U.S."

Well, no he's not.  But so what?

"It would be nice if as President, Donald Trump never set foot in Washington DC."

It would be nice if Donald Trump never set foot in front of a TV camera again, President (fat chance) or not.

"Worthy thought, but may I suggest that President Trump appoints Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court, ensuring that we would have a "constitutionalist" on the court for many years to come."

Well, or at least insuring that a schizophrenic has a place on the court.  Wouldn't that be fun? Well, enough of this.  On we go:

Before It's News:  "LAVOY FINICUM:A Great Martyr of the Movement...The 2nd American Revolution Has Officially Begun"

Unfortunately for you guys, the 2nd American Revolution officially ended, when the last Oregon holdout asked for a joint before surrendering.  The above, from a website currently featuring the following lead article:

Before It's News:  "How/When Will CIA Vanish Obama + Michelle?"

They are anxiously awaiting the day. Because we all know Obama is:

"Someone with no real family. Someone with a fake wife who might be a dude wearing a dress. Someone with two kids (obtained in Morocco?) to complete his cover identity. Someone with CIA-assigned SSN’s, a forged birth certificate, and a botched Selective Service card."

And who would they like to see in the White House?

"For the next President, you can’t install a Good Guy (like Chuck Norris)"

Chuck Norris.  President Chuck Norris.  Doesn't that sound like a great idea?  I mean, he could just beat up anyone who was against him, amirite?  Or at least he could, before he was 75 years old.

Oh well, how about one more from these guys:

Before It's News:  "Breaking! Galactics Taking Control Of Earth! Cabal In Last Dying Breath, “They Have Not Surrendered But We Are Taking Over”, Says Sananda, Supreme ET Commander Of All Visitors To Earth, Under Direction Of Prime Creator"

And here's a picture of Sananda, so you can recognize him when he shows up:

Well, at least he's a nice white guy.  Actually, he sort of looks like Chuck Norris.

Okay, then.  On we go:

Matt Vespa, Town Hall:  "Would Sanders Have Won Iowa If He Attacked Hillary On Her Email Fiasco?"

How about if he'd called her a lying criminal who is about to be indicted?  How about if he called her a murderer?  How about if he accused her of deliberately getting four Americans killed?  I mean, they are all lies, but that's the way the Republicans are going to campaign against her.  They just can't figure out why Bernie doesn't do the same thing.

Matt Vespa, Town Hall:  "Hypocrisy: Democrats Blasted Cost Of Benghazi Committee, But Gave Staffers Thousands In Bonuses"

Matt, sorry to have to let you know this, but what the Democrats are blasting the Republicans for is that the entire Benghazi affair is a gigantic Republican lying smear.  They are not really all that interested in what it cost; if it cost a penny, that would be too much.

Terry Paulsen, Town Hall:  "A Marco Rubio Presidency Keeps Hope Alive"

Hope of what?

"His optimistic, unifying campaign message and young Reaganesque persona is in sharp contrast to the divisive rhetoric and negative personal attacks."

God, don't make me sick.  By the way, young Reaganesque persona?  Wasn't Reagan really old?

And now, the question that has been on everyone's mind:

Katie Pavlich:  "What is Carly Fiorina Doing For Debate Night?"

Even if she told us, who would believe a word she says?  Or care, for that matter.

And some more news that we have all been waiting for:

Streiff, Red State:  "BREAKING. Rand Paul’s New Hampshire Campaign Chair Endorses Ted Cruz"

Well, that changes everything.

Seton Motley, Red State:  "When Government Makes Your Choices for You – You End Up with No Choices"

Like, for example, if you leave it up to government, you won't have a choice between healthy water and poison water, or between getting medical care and just dying on the street.

Ron Radosh, PJ Media:  "Bernie's Adventures on a Stalinist Kibbutz"

Psst:  He's JEWISH!!!!

Over reaction, a little?

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "GROSS. Beyonce’s Super Bowl Performance Was a Racist Political Statement In Support of Marxist Cop Killers"

Give it a rest, Jim.  I don't even have the five seconds it would take to come up with a snide response to that.  And more Jim:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:   "Jeb Bush’s Negative Tone Could Hurt His Family Legacy"

Ha.  What, the legacy of a three trillion dollar aggression against an innocent country, that failed after killing a million civilians, or the legacy of a near-depression caused by a President that existed for no other purpose than to funnel the nation's wealth to the hyper-rich?  Yeah, it would really be a shame to hurt that legacy.  Well, don't worry, Jim, the Bush legacy is written in stone for all to see from now until the end of time.

And now, a special edition of When Insanity Reigns, by an expert in the subject, Gina Miller, at Renew America:

"When insanity reigns, we have a God-hating, anti-American president who assures us that the global weather (yes, it's just weather), when somehow "miraculously" affected by my SUV, is the greatest threat we face, and millions of dupes believe him.

When insanity reigns, a shrill, lying woman who should be a felon in prison, is allowed to not only run for president, but through massive election fraud, could possibly "win" the presidency.

When insanity reigns, the powers-that-be insist on defining reality as whatever any given sexual deviant says it is

When insanity reigns, those of us who recognize God's authority as the Creator of all that is...we become the "insane," the "lunatics." ...we are the "enemies of the state." We are the ones who must be silenced."

Insanity.  Like I say, Gina is an expert in the subject.  Let's just end with one more comment from Gina:

"I don't have to tell you how discouraging, infuriating and terrifying it is to watch the greatest, freest nation in the history of the world be systematically dismantled by the Hell-inspired servants of Satan who are now in power in the United States."

Well, there you go.  Insanity, indeed.

Joseph Farah, World Net Daily:  "Did you hear what Obama said at Prayer Breakfast?"

No.  Sorry.  Couldn't care less.

Mary Lou Bruner, Republican candidate for school board in Texas:  "Obama has a soft spot for homosexuals because of the years he spent as a male prostitute in his twenties. That is how he paid for his drugs."

And for the chain saw that he used to cut up all those teenagers in the movie.

Michael Leahy, Breitbart:  "Trump Punches Back at Obama’s ‘Belief’ He Will Not Be President: ‘You’re Lucky I Didn’t Run Last Time’"

Ooh, I bet that had Obama quivering under his bed.

Don Feder, American Thinker:  "All Aboard Starship Bernie!  Let's take a trip to an alternate reality where socialism works!"

Yeah.  It's called Europe.  I'm ready.  Let's go.

World Net Daily:  "The secret code in the Bible - deciphered"

But only if you buy a DVD from World Net Daily.  Or if you have one of these:

Personally, I'd trust the Captain Midnight decoder more than I would something I bought from World Net Daily.

Bork

Okay, it's inevitable that, over the coming months, the Republicans are going to constantly refer to the Democratic Senate's rejection of the nomination of the right wing Robert Bork as an example of partisan judicial decisions made by Democrats.  I think we had better deal with the facts of the career of Bork, before the Republicans get too much momentum going on this one.

Bork, during his confirmation hearings

For those who may not remember, or may have never heard about it, the salient event in the entire career of Bork was the so-called "Saturday Night Massacre."  Briefly, as described by Wikipedia,

"The Saturday Night Massacre was the term used by political commentators[1] to refer to U.S. President Richard Nixon's dismissal of independent special prosecutor Archibald Cox, and the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus on October 20, 1973, during the Watergate scandal"

Cox was appointed by Richardson to investigate the Watergate affair; his appointment was accepted after he assured the Senate that Cox would be given a free hand to examine the evidence.

Cox subpoenaed Nixon for copies of the infamous Watergate tapes, when their existence became known.  Nixon offered one of the most hilarious "compromises" in political history; he agreed to let the tapes be reviewed by Senator John Stennis who, it just so happened, was, at that point in his life, nearly deaf.

Nixon then ordered Attorney General Richardson to fire Cox, breaking his agreement with Congress.  Richardson refused, and resigned.  The same thing happened with deputy Attorney General Ruckelshaus, who also resigned rather than participate in such an utter betrayal.

Nixon then turned to Robert Bork, who was at the time the Solicitor General.  Without apparent qualms, Bork fired Cox, after being brought by limousine to the White House and being secretly sworn in as acting Attorney General.

Well, that's the story.  Given his moment on the national stage, in an affair of staggering importance which led to the only resignation of a President in our history, Bork placed his personal career ahead of the rule of law, the Nixon administration's honor, and the welfare of the United States.

At the time of Reagan's attempt to get Bork on the court, I believe, the Democrats really failed to articulate the full force of this argument, but it is clear to me that, of all people in this country, Bork, however brilliant and versed in the law, had demonstrated himself to be uniquely morally unqualified to sit on the court.  Once in a while, Congressional Democrats rise out of their stupor and do the right thing; this is an example.

Brilliant Legal Scholar

With a life long commitment to following the original intent of the Founding Fathers.

Yes, you know who I am talking about: one of the greatest legal mountebanks of all time, the recently departed Antonin Scalia.

I periodically assembled material from some of his opinions to demonstrate what a farce that piece of right wing propaganda was.  I never got around to assembling it all into a post.  I'd like, today, to deal with just one of the court decisions in which Scalia was the prime mover, that in District of Columbia v. Heller, which vastly expanded gun "rights" in the United States.

The material I am quoting comes from Wikipedia, but can be found many other places.  But first, let us remember what the second amendment actually says:

Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

So, on to Scalia's basis for his opinion:

"The Supreme Court held:

(1) The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.

(a) The Amendment’s prefatory clause announces a purpose, but does not limit or expand the scope of the second part, the operative clause. The operative clause’s text and history demonstrate that it connotes an individual right to keep and bear arms.

Please observe what Scalia has done here, because it was really quite remarkable.  Using a pathetic sort of grammatical argument, he has asserted that the first half of the second amendment means absolutely nothing, and the only part that counts is the one giving everyone a right to own a gun, regardless of the actual words of the founding fathers whose intent is supposedly all Scalia cares about.

This one example alone (ignoring things like his utterly corrupt and fact free decisions in Bush v. Gore and Citizens United)  should be enough to convince any fair minded person that Scalia never gave a damn about the founding fathers or the Constitution, or about anything but advancing the corporate and wealthy interests that he was put on the court to nurture.

But lets go a little farther:

"...the Court ruled a total ban on operative handguns in the home is unconstitutional, as the ban runs afoul of both the self-defense purpose of the Second Amendment – a purpose not previously articulated by the Court – and the "in common use at the time" prong of the Miller decision"

And let's be clear here that this purpose- "not previously articulated by the Court"- was not previously articulated because (read it again if you doubt me) it is mentioned nowhere in the Second Amendment.  Furthermore, a quick reading of the relevant Federalist Papers, written by the authors of the Constitution to explain what they meant, will quickly confirm that the notion of individual self defense played absolutely no part in their thinking.  That is why Scalia, who knew every word of this material, had to use his pathetically transparent and disingenuous ruse to deny the existence of the first half of the amendment.

This one example serves to completely devastate the claim that Scalia was a brilliant jurist defending the Constitution, and reveals him to be nothing but a corrupt partisan hack.  Enough with the propaganda; Scalia was the best they could come up with, and he was utterly lacking in the sort of honesty that you might think we want on the court.

And this is all for a very clear reason:  Conservative history, Conservative economics, Conservative politics- it is all a gigantic charade designed to further the interests of the hyper rich.  None of it has a shred of substance, so it is impossible for the most brilliant, knowledgeable jurist to come up with a defense of it that can withstand scrutiny.  A "Conservative" Supreme Court is a lawless Supreme Court, and that is really the whole story of the career of Antonin Scalia.

Original Intent on the March

In memory of the late Antonin Scalia, the great champion of original intent, right?

I turn for the next remark to another authority:

"(The President) shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for..."

What the Constitution does not say is that the President shall nominate Judges of the supreme Court, unless he is a Democrat, and Republicans don't want him to appoint one.  It is the President's duty to do that.  It would be a real example of the Republicans' fantasy-world claims that Obama is trashing the Constitution, if he failed to carry out that task.

Obama: the only guy who can wreck the Constitution by following it.  Get ready for a Republican tantrum to top all tantrums.  They are all going to be competing with Ted Cruz to see who can make the government fall apart over this.

Good riddance

It's about fucking time.

At least we've finally seen the end of perhaps the most corrupt person ever to sit on the Supreme Court, and the one with the least respect for the rule of law.  Don't expect me to spend one second feeling anything but thrilled and relieved that this malignant fascist has gone to his eternal punishment.  The only sad thing is that he didn't die in prison, which is where he has belonged at least since he joined four other corrupt Republican Justices to make George W. Bush President.

Of course, this monster hasn't been dead more than a few hours, and Republicans are already screaming that Obama has no right to appoint a successor, for reasons that we hardly need mention.  And we all know that even if he appointed Jesus Christ himself, the Republicans are going to do everything they can to frustrate him, so in the chance that a Republican is elected President, we can have another crook on the Supreme Court to replace Scalia.

Not With a Bang, But With a Whimper

So, the latest right wing Patriot Revolution came to an end yesterday, the same way they all do-in miserable, humiliating failure.

Judging from the belligerent talk of the last four holdouts, we are lucky it didn't end with a few bangs, but instead, it ended for good, I think, when the last guy standing demanded marijuana before he would come out.  At that point, I think, any shred of credibility these people had vanished into the smoke from his bong.

Not that this is unprecedented.  The belligerent claims that they are just about to lead a revolution any day now always end in this sort of humiliation, when it turns out that, despite endless national publicity, their uprisings inevitably end up attracting a couple hundred people at most.  If you are interested in more of these ludicrous incidents, I would like to direct you to a post I made in December of 2014, listing a fair number of them which had taken place in the couple of previous years.

The truth is that, despite their own self-delusions, and despite what is essentially a conspiracy in the mainstream press to allow these people to present themselves as representing a significant number of Americans, they are little more than circus freaks.  As you can see by noticing that,  other than hard core observers like myself, and the ever-valuable Dave Niewert, coverage of them disappeared the minute the last guy took his last toke and stumbled out of his filth-ridden encampment.  I could hardly find a word of it on the nightly news, the very day the whole thing ended, while the reporters went back to their obsession with essentially meaningless (unless you're Marco Rubio) debates.

Now, as Niewert points out, all that remains to see is if LaVoy Finicum's death provokes another "lone wolf" violent attack, as Waco and Ruby Ridge led to the Oklahoma City bombing.  We'll see, but I think the hysterical behavior of the last holdouts during the final day, thoughtfully provided by the protesters themselves, must have rendered them so lacking in credibility that it will be hard to find anyone willing to kill to avenge this miserable failure.

Madness

It's just after 11 PM Pacific time now.  Anyone who sees this needs to turn to Crooks and Liars and spend a few minutes listening to the live audio feed coming right now from the four people left at the Oregon wildlife refuge.

I must say that, in my entire life, I have never heard such madness.  These people are in a state where they could do anything.  I won't even characterize it- I can't even begin to find the words to describe the state that these people are in.  The raving about the government is truly beyond belief- and you know how much time I've spent following crazed right wingers.  Well, here is the truth with the mask ripped off, and it is really scary.  Anything could happen at this point.  Please, if you read this post in the next little while, click on the link and listen.  It is truly frightening, and a horrible demonstration of what we have bred by letting these people get away with their malignant idiocy for years.

It's really hard to hear, but I will try to listen for a while longer to hear if they really go over the edge and start shooting.

Update:  It's about 11:45.  I've never in my life heard adults work themselves up into a state of hysteria in my life.  I thought like a bunch of two year olds throwing a tantrum, they would have worn themselves out by now, but they seem to be determined to work themselves in a state where they could do anything, including a Butch and Sundance scenario.  They seem to have convinced themselves that if they die, a revolution is going to start tomorrow, and in my admittedly untrained opinion, I think they are working themselves up into a murderous state.  I'm going to have to stop listening soon.  I shudder to think what we will find by tomorrow morning.

These are truly evil people.  We all have a responsibility to not give in to such hatred, but these guys are just surrendering to the worst of all human emotions.

Now they are saying that if the feds tear gas them, they have a right to start shooting.  Within a couple of hours, they will talk themselves into believing that anything the feds do is a justification to start shooting.  They are demanding that the feds turn the headlights on their vehicles off.  Soon, that will be a big enough excuse.

I wish every person in the United States could hear this- it would let them all understand just how crazy and violent these people are.

Update 2:  Well, these jackasses promised to surrender at 8:00 AM this morning, but it's now 9:30 and of course they are still there, blabbing about Obamacare and liberty and Sharia law.

Here's something funny.  The guy says that Sharia law isn't the law in the United States because US law comes from our God-given rights.  This remark alone may qualify him to be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Lack of Self Awareness.

Got to go out for a while- I'm sure I'll have more later.

And That Little More:  Early afternoon, and its all over.  The last jackass surrendered after his demands for disbanding the police, ending abortion and Obmacare, and for weed, were not met.  This incident, if nothing else, should definitively demonstrate what self-centered assholes these people are, and how little they really care about the Constitution, this country, or anything else that they don't think will benefit themselves instantly.  In other words, except for being more stupid than most, typical Conservatives.  I tell you what- blaming these people barely makes more sense than blaming a puppy or eating a shoe.  The real blame lies on both the right wing politicians and spokesmen who have egged these people on, closer and closer to violence, over the years, and the media and Democrats who have steadfastly refused to deal in public with this pack of fascist, violent, armed subhumans.

New Hampshire

So, let's take a look at the New Hampshire Republican results.  I'm going to ignore everyone who got less than one percent, just to make this a little easier.

Trump 35.3%
Kasich 15.8%
Cruz         11.7%
Bush 11.0%
Rubio 10.6%
Christie         7.4%
Fiorina 4.1%
Carson 2.3%

Well, here's the story.  Fiorina and Christie are already out, and Carson is only holding on because he lives in a dream world.  And, we all know that the Republican party is never going to nominate John Kasich, one of the most boring candidates on earth.

These people all pretty well break down into two categories- the figures who are acceptable to the big money guys that really run the Republican party, and the insurgents; the candidates for the really, really angry guys.  And, of course, Carly Fiorina, who tried to be both things- a (miserable) CEO and a really angry person, all at once.  That got her all the way up to 4.1% of the vote, because the rich guys think she's crazy, and the crazy people don't think she is crazy enough, so I think we can set her aside too.

On the rich guy  side of this list (otherwise laughably known as the "moderates,") are Kasich, Bush, Rubio and Christie.  On the cazy side are Trump, Cruz and Carson.  So, assuming (as I think it is safe to do) that Kasich doesn't have a chance, Cruz is on a downhill slide already because no one trusts him, Rubio self destructed in the last week, Christie has given up, and Carson was never going to go anywhere; and also assuming that the people who voted for the "establshment" guys will gravitate to another establishment guy, and the crazies will do the same for the one crazy left, what do we have?  Just add up the percentages:

Trump (and Trump-like candidates) 49.3%
Jeb! (and Jeb-like candidates) 44.8%

That near tie, I think, is what things are going to come down to in a few more weeks.  And this is without the immense pressure that the Kochs, Adelson, the Waltons can put on the party to do what they want.  And this is also ignoring the clear fact that Trump appeals to many people because of the carnival aspect of his run, and a certain percentage of them will get tired of the show before too much longer.  Maybe not a lot, but if ten percent decide they've had enough time in the fun house, the race is tied.

Well, I'm probably making a phenomenal fool out of myself saying this, and if so, I will cop to it.  But, as no one wants to notice, the totally devastated Bush managed to outpoll the rising star Rubio.  Compared to Bush's status as recently as a few weeks ago, this is a rather strong comeback, and if the rich guys line up behind him, things could look a lot different by the time of the conventions.

Destruction

I hope I can induce you to take a look at this short video showing the damage inflicted on the Syrian city of Homs by its government:

Drone footage over HomsAfter years of war, parts of Homs, Syria, are crumbling and deserted. New drone footage shows the extent of the devastation.
Posted by Channel 4 News on Tuesday, February 2, 2016

And Israel is regularly savaged for being the worst country on earth because they have knocked down houses belonging to suicide attackers.

Naturally, you only have to read down a little way in the comments on this video to find people blaming the destruction of Homs on Israel:

"West , USA , Isreal (sic) and Arabs states are responsible for all these in Syria"

"constantly dying in Iraq and Syria due to the Government of the United States and Israel"

" typical Zionism Christian blaming Muslim"

"Typical Zionist responses everywhere. Let's blame Muslims and say that they typically blame Israel for all problems."

Ted Nugent Really Gets Down To It

Courtesy of Crooks and Liars, here is an image that appeared on Ted Nugent's facebook site:
The next time that someone tries to tell you that right wingers are the Jews' best friends, show them this.

Needless to say, Nugent will be able to get away with this without a shred of consequence, because his hatred is exactly what the right runs on.

And by the way, this sort of knocks a hole in the theory that there is no connection between attacking the state of Israel and anti-semitism.

Did Anyone Else Notice This?

Am I the only one (highly unlikely) or is the press up to its usual Repubican-coddling tricks?

Last month, the Democrats had two debates on the weekend.  This was immediately decried by Republicans as a sign of fatal weakness, hiding their agenda from the public, which would supposedly not watch a weekend debate and/or some sort of dirty trick by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz; a claim which was picked up by the Sunday morning talking heads and proclaimed far and wide among the mainstream meda.

Well, this week, the Republicans had a Saturday night debate.

Not a peep.

How strange.

Wingnut Wrapup

If you don't empty the garbage can, there won't be any room for more garbage, will there?  Of course, some of you may criticize Green Eagle here, bringing up the fact that jumping in the garbage can isn't the same as emptying it, but maybe the garbage will get crushed down so there will be room for more:

These days, they're scared of everything:

Justin Holcombe, Town Hall:  "Yikes: Iran Flew Drone Over US Aircraft Carrier"

Absolute proof, I guess, that Obama is a weak leader, since he didn't bomb the crap out of Iran, using this meaningless act as an excuse.

Bryan Crabtree, Town Hall:  "Think Trump’s Bankruptcies Make Him Unqualified? That's Foolish"

Proof of how much "success" in business really means to Republicans.  Because nothing makes a person more qualified to be President to today's right wing, than being totally incompetent.  You know, a lot of Republicans have been idiotically screaming for years that the country is about to go bankrupt.  So maybe Trump is the most qualified person to be President- he's the only one with the experience of doing that.

Cortney O'Brien, Town Hall:  "Santorum Upset With Media Who 'Never Put His Name' on Election Polls"

Green Eagle is upset about the same thing.  Who knows- at this point Green Eagle thinks he has a pretty good shot at outpolling Santorum.

John Bicknell, Town Hall:  "The Improper Campaign Against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton...A bedrock principle of American justice is that every defendant is treated the same."

Ha ha.  Ha ha ha.  Every defendant is treated the same.  Ha ha.  Okay, let's just move on here.

Joe Cunningham, Red State:  "Hillary Clinton’s Campaign Has The Worst Idea Imaginable"

This has something to do with using snap chat, which is apparently a worse idea than, say, invading Iran or kicking twelve million people off of health insurance, or spending fifty or sixty billion dollars building and maintaining a wall on our southern border.  Glad you've got your priorities straight, Joe.

Streiff, Red State:  "LaVoy Finicum Was Shot Dead, But Will His Death Have Any Meaning?"

No.  Simple answers to simple questions.  Actually, I feel compelled to say that Streiff, who I've commented on before, has actually written a very sensible and fair article about this incident.  I just want to take this opportunity to protest anything that might compromise the totally negative role Finicum played in our nation's history.

I'll back up my statement by doing something I rarely do here: linking to Streiff's post.

Chris Guzman, PJ Media:  "'Bored' Hillary Clinton Tweets an Image from Her Benghazi Hearing to Mock the Iowa GOPDebate ...Trolling political enemies reaches a new low."

A new low.  Lower than calling your Democratic opponents Satanic anti-American Communist terror agents who are working to destroy the country.

Jim Hoft:  "BREAKING VIDEO=> LaVoy Finicum FBI Murder Footage – With His Hands Up"

I'm just going to let this remark, from the legendary Stupidest Man On The Internet (and also the most unapologetic liar, in a very crowded right wing field,) totally contradicting what anyone can see on the video, stand in for what you know is the inevitable wingnut response to this incident- "it never happened- who you going to trust, me or your lying eyes?"

And while we are on the subject of Jim Hoft, here's the Least Likely Incident To Turn Into a Scandal, of the year so far:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Crazed Leftist Brings Kids With Him to Spray Pro-Lifers With Tomato Juice"

Crazed rightists, of course, hole up in a government building and threaten to kill Federal agents.  That's okay, I guess.  Tomato juice, not so much.  Jim continues:

"Though often under-reported in the mainstream media, pro-life advocates who protest outside of abortion centers often are targets of harassment and sometimes violence."

Tomato Juice- violence.  Actually killing women's clinic employees, not so much.

Clenard Childress, Renew America:  "I was naked and you clothed me"

And a good thing too.  Judging from the part of you we can still see, it would not have been a pretty sight.  It only took Clenard a few sentences to descend to this point:

"The insidious Planned Parenthood was exposed dismembering live children (abortion) and the selling of their body parts. We must conclude that the "slave block" is still alive and well in America when it was discovered whole infant cadavers were being sold on the black market, all graphically recorded for all of America to see...Those who are familiar with the bible and Jesus teachings have taken a deep breath and understand that the courageous efforts of David Daleiden and the Center For Medical Progress was unquestionably an orchestrated project of God Himself"

God is all for lying.

Jeremy Eger, American Thinker:  "Donald Trump Is Aaron Burr Reincarnated"

Well, he is someone reincarnated.  That's for sure:

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Outrage: Administration may have handed thousands of illegal alien kids over to human traffickers"

For all we know, they may have handed them over to lizard people from outer space.  It would have been far better, I guess, to have adopted the Republican plan of just busing them up to the border and shoving them across.

And now, time for some adult conversation from the right:

Doug Giles, Town Hall:  "Dear Male Cowards: Islam LOVES Your Political CorrectnessI don't know who started the politically correct pussification process of the male collective, but I'd like to find them and pistol whip them into next week with my S&W Model 29 for ruining our planet."

Ooh, we're running scared now, Doug.  You are a manly man- why, you even have memorized the model number of your gun.

Bruce Bialosky Town Hall:  "Hillary’s Dance with The Devil...Ms. Clinton has placed at the core of her campaign the fact that she is a woman and that it would be so nice to have a woman in the White House."

I really do understand, Bruce, how to that segment of males who have never been able to understand why women do not fall at their feet, just because those males are unappealing, self-absorbed jerks, that being a woman would be the next thing to being Satan himself.  Forgive us if understanding you doesn't make us agree with you.

Years ago, Bruce used to be a columnist for the Los Angeles Times. I think they replaced him with Jonah Goldberg- the only time in the history of the world where hiring Jonah Goldberg was a move in the right direction.

Steve Chapman, Town Hall:  "Is Rising Violence a 'Ferguson Effect'?"

Just in case you didn't understand that, what Steve is saying is that crime is caused by black people being upset that a white cop gunned down an unarmed black teenager.  If they were just fine with things like that happening every few days, crime would just disappear from our society.

Roger Kimball, PJ Media:  "How to Trim the Fat in the Ivy League...Are Ivy League institutions too rich?"

This article contains the helpful suggestion that we could cut those evil Ivies down to size by one simple step:  stealing all of their money.  Really.  That's his answer to the world's most respected institutions of higher learning- destroy them, presumably so the American people could become even more ignorant and savage (i.e. Republican) than they already are.  By the way, I don't remember Roger ever asking if the Koch brothers or the Waltons, who each have more money than any one of the ivies, are too rich.

And if crushing the most respected colleges in the country doesn't do the trick, how about trying this suggestion from one of Roger's commenters?

"Cut way back on student loans and see what happens."

Kick poor people out of school- that will solve the problem.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Popular Conservative Liz Cheney to Run for Congress"

Giving a new meaning to the word "popular."  Something along the lines of "not hated by quite as many people as her father is."

John Hawkins, Town Hall:  "Dear American Muslims, Can We Have An Honest Talk?"

Not with someone like you, jerk.  John believes that all American Muslims need to come crawling to Christians on their knees, begging for forgiveness for ISIS.  No word about how Christians should feel about the Bundys, or Ted Cruz.

Bridget Johnson, PJ Media:  "Carson: 'Will There Be Any Consequences' for Cruz Camp's 'Dirty Tricks'?"

Yeah.  The day after there are any consequences for his attempt to sabotage the government and destroy the economy.  Or for him being fucking psychotic.

Matt Towery, Town Hall:  "Matt Towery: Messy Democrat Contest Might Result in a 'Putative' VP Choice"

Messy Democrat Contest.  Yup, that's what he said.  How do you make fun of a line like that, coming from a Republican?

Devon Herrick, Town Hall:  "Affordable Health Plans Have Gone Extinct; Obamacare Killed Them Off"

First of all, before Obamacare, there were no affordable health plans in the U.S.  Second, what about the 17 million mostly poor and moderate income people who now have medical care under Obamacare that didn't before?  Man, what's the use- it's just the same lies over and over again.

Ann Coulter, Town Hall:  "Any politician who claims to care about the drug overdose deaths sweeping the nation, but does not demand that we build a wall, deport illegal aliens and end the anchor baby scam, is a liar."

And cut taxes on the rich.  You forgot that one, Ann.  There's no such thing as a Republican plan for anything that doesn't include that.

Justin Holcomb, Town Hall:  "Watch: George W. Bush Finally Makes an Appearance for His Brother"

No thanks.  I'll just scroll back up and look at the picture of Curly for a little longer.

Michael Goldstein, American Thinker:  "Should We Destroy ISIS?  We certainly could, but would it be wise to destroy the foremost threat to Obama’s anointed hegemon, Iran, spilling more American blood and expending more of our borrowed treasure in the process?"

Well, here it is- a new low in Obama hatred.  Republicans scream bloody murder about how ISIS is going to come over here and murder all of us in our beds, but when it comes to choosing between ISIS and Obama, they still side with ISIS.  And remember when Democrats were called traitors for daring to criticize George W. Bush's three trillion dollar disaster in Iraq?

Anthony Bright-Paul, American Thinker:  "Why Skeptics are Losing the Climate Change Battle"

Because they are not "skeptics," they are paid corporate liars?

Shikha Dalmia, Reason:  "Critics Don't Want To Admit Flint's Water Crisis Is Due to Stimulus Plan Rather Than Austerity"

They don't want to admit it!  And just because it isn't true!  What a bunch of spoilsports!

Weasel Zippers:  "Russians Depict Obama As Murderous Devil Who Should Be Put On Trial At The Hague…"

Well, at last they have found common ground with the Republican party.

And that's where I get off the bus for today.

Really, What Is There To Say?

I haven't been posting much lately.  I took a look at a lot of liberal sites that I have bookmarked, and I noticed that many of their writers don't seem to be posting much either.  And I am sure it's not because they have lost interest; it is because there is so little point in saying the same obvious things over and over again, only to have them drowned out by the right wing noise machine and the stupid, corrupt mainstream media.

In the official Beltway pundit world these days, Bernie Sanders, a serious, life long liberal politician, with carefully thought out policies which also happen to be supported by a large majority of Americans, is just the same as the loudmouthed racist carnival barker Trump.  And Hillary Clinton, perhaps the most accomplished person to run for President in decades, is the same as the puerile, lying empty suit Marco Rubio.

And we know that the mainstream press is going to keep repeating these grotesque distortions of political reality a thousand times a day, every day until the election.  We also know that we have only begun to see the sewage pit of lies that the Republicans are going to hurl at the eventual Democratic nominee, which will go largely unquestioned by the talking heads who inhabit our journalistic world.

And all of this in the service of the nauseatingly rich owners of the press in this country, along with owning just about everything else, even though these Republican politicians and "reporters" know perfectly well that they are driving this country over a cliff, in order to make a few more billion dollars for the Koch brothers and the Waltons.

No wonder it is hard, when it actually comes down to it, to sit at a keyboard and try to write something that is true.

Repulsive

Can there be a person in the entire country who would support Ted Cruz after seeing this picture of him and his wife?
Really, he could be the second coming of Jesus (as he seems to think he is,) and still, who could stand the thought of having to look at things like this for the next four years?

How Little We Know

Here is an aerial view of a place called Amghirar, in the hills of Southern Morocco, from Google Earth.  I just sort of found it by accident:
From the air, it appears like we could be looking back through time to 2,000 or 3,000 BC.  What could people think about in a place like this?  What do they feel?  Are they pretty much like us, or are they so foreign that we can't really understand them at all?

Looking at this really makes me feel like I am an isolated, very unusual (and not particularly interesting) sort of person, living in the Hollywood Hills, without a clue of the forces swirling around us every day.  I feel a sort of hopelessness at the idea that I can really understand anything.

Well, this is probably the most useless post I have ever made.  Sorry if it caused you to think I'm a little deranged.  Nice picture though, huh?

A little more:  I mentioned Catal Huyuk in the comments.  Catal Huyuk, in Turkey, dates from about 7,000 BC, and is the earliest settlement of any size of which we can be fairly certain about its nature.  I thought that people might like to see a reconstruction of Catal Huyuk:
Of course, there were no streets in Catal Huyuk; access to the buildings was from the roofs.  Still, the degree that things have not changed in 9,000 years is pretty spectacular to me.  What do people whose lives have remained so unchanged in all those millennia think when electricity (and TV) come to their homes, and they see what life looks like in New York or Los Angeles?

The Iowa Caucuses

Who cares?
