God, Make It Stop

Lindsay Graham, announcing how he intends to rectify the government's inability to accomplish anything:
"GRAHAM: So I am calling for a joint select committee. But for God’s sake, let the House have a select committee where you get three or four committees together to look at this situation as one unit rather than stove piping. And where are the survivors? 14 months later, Steve, the survivors, the people who survived the attack in Benghazi, have not been made available to the U.S. congress for oversight purposes. I’m going to block every appointment in the United States Senate until the survivors are being made available to the Congress. I’m tired of hearing from people on TV and reading about stuff in books.  We need to get to the bottom of this and to my house colleagues, Darrell Issa has done great job.”

BENGHAZI!  We're back to this malicious lie, because they don't have anything else.  And rather than give up and help to straighten the country out, Lindsay is going to stop every single appointment until who knows what happens, because his demands will never end.

This is essentially treason, and until the Democrats get over their miserable weakness and start telling the truth about it, the Republicans are just going to get worse and worse.  We narrowly averted a coup attempt last month, and they are gearing up for another one as soon as possible.  Democratic government in this country is over until this sort of thing is corrected.  Which is to say that the long time Republican dream of turning the United States from the industrial and economic giant of the world into a tinhorn third world dictatorship, filled with a population so traumatized that they won't even think of fighting for their rights, is getting closer every day

More of the Same (Or Worse) from Fukushima

Here, and here are a couple of articles from the last couple of days regarding the "cleanup" efforts at the Fukushima nuclear plant. They reveal the utter indifference for public safety which has characterized the efforts both of TEPCO and the Japanese government since this monstrous, ongoing disaster started.  It is clear that TEPCO is interested in nothing but surviving with as much of its profits intact, and the Japanese government is intent on nothing but minimizing public knowledge of the extent of the massive damage which this disaster continues to create.

Cleanup efforts are now estimated to cost in the area of a staggering $150 billion, and that is if the spent fuel rods can be removed from the area of reactor 4.  Several hundred of these rods are jumbled together in a pile in a damaged cooling tank near reactor 4.  In normal circumstances, when they need to be handled, they are moved by robotic arms which operate with an accuracy of a small fraction of a millimeter.  Of course, now, they are all mixed up in a pile, where the programming of the robots is of little use. They must now be moved by remote operators using TV to try to sort out the damage.  If even one of these rods were to break open in the air in the course of handling, it could emit enough radiation to render a large part of Japan uninhabitable for thousands of years, as well as causing untold radiation damage to much of the rest of the world; and incidentally, emit enough radiation to destroy the TV signals coming from the plant, rendering the rest of the rods untouchable.  They could then sit there, in a damaged containment tank, until enough time passed for it to collapse- ten years, a thousand, ten thousand, spilling its contents wherever they might fall.  And if inadequate handling resulted in the fracturing of a number of these rods, a nuclear reaction could result, which has at least some risk of wiping out life on the planet.

In the face of all this, stonewalling, protecting the miscreants, refusing to accept reality- in other words, the same response to every civil nuclear disaster in history.  This is the inevitable story of nuclear energy- they pick up the profits, we pay for the disasters.  It is time to put an end to this farce now.

Wingnut Wrapup

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "Rubio:  Let's Face It, Obamacare's Individual Mandate Must Be Delayed"

Oh, it must be- it MUST be!  Because just a week ago the American people stood together behind the Republicans when they demanded that this happen!  And what is the reasoning behind all of this?

"If Dems oppose Rubio's plan while explaining (correctly) that provisions like guaranteed issue and community rating would also have to be pushed back to avoid an even worse disaster...then, great. Republicans will say, "we agree, let's delay the whole damn thing -- which, by the way, we've been advising for months now. And the White House compared us to terrorists for even suggesting it. In fact, Democrats chose to keep the government shut down in order to block the very thing they now realize must be done."

Democrats shut the government!  And we are going to keep screaming this lie until you people out there believe it!  And by the way, Marco, Democrats didn't compare you to terrorists for opposing Obamacare.  They compared you to terrorists for trying to use threats and extortion to destroy this country's democratically passed laws.

Christine Rousselle, Town Hall:  "CNBC Requests "Mexican Music" for Sen. Ted Cruz"

The horror!  They should have requested Canadian music.  Whatever the hell that is.

Bryan Preston, PJ Media:  "CNBC Host Steve Liesman: ‘Let’s Get Some Mexican Music’ While I Bash Ted Cruz"

Yeah, I know I just commented on this story, but you've got to love the CNBC host's name:  Liesman.  I predict a great future for this guy on Fox News.

Daniel J. Mitchell, Town Hall:  "I recently gave five reasons why the shutdown fight was worthwhile and my number one reason was that it’s better to be on offense than defense. "

Yeah, but is it better to be on offense than to do nothing, and not ending up looking like a belligerent, childish loser?  Think about that one for a while, Daniel.

Nicole Bailey, Town Hall:  "New Report: US Drones Killed 68-Year-Old Grandmother"

Well, at least she went quick, unlike all the people right here in the good old U.S. of A. that will be killed if Republicans don't let them have medical care.

Susan Stamper Brown, Town Hall:  "Democrats have only one goal to accomplish between now and the 2014 elections: To paint Republicans as the bad guys."

You're making it too easy for us.

Lawrence Provost, Human Events:  "Remembering Reagan: 30 years after the liberation of Grenada...Thirty years ago this week, radical Marxist forces took over the Caribbean island nation of Grenada... the most compelling reason to intervene was the direct threat to U.S. security, namely American citizens.  At least 600 American medical students were studying at St. George’s Medical School in Grenada.  After the imposition of curfew, many of the students had already been held hostage for a few hours by communist forces...Reagan would have none of it.   He ordered an American-led, allied invasion and retook Grenada."

Grenada.  A country of 110,000 people, with an area of 133 square miles, making it just about the size of Omaha, Nebraska, with about a quarter of Omaha's population.  Man, that was a great week for the United States Military.  Of course, the same week, terrorists blew up a Marine barracks in Lebanon, killing 299 soldiers, the greatest Marine death toll in one day since Iwo Jima, after which Reagan had the Marines turn tail and flee the country.  No mention of that in this article.  I wonder why?  Man, what a hero that Reagan was.

Bryan Preston, PJ Media:  "How You and Your Family Can Escape Obamacare"

Move to Pakistan.

Paula Boyard, PJ Media:  "Ohio House Republicans Prepared to Sue Kasich to Stop Medicaid-Expansion Power Grab...Representative Matt Lynch: “This is war...Kasich has been obsessive in his desire to use Obamacare funds to expand Medicaid in the state”

Republicans- you've got to love them.  Here they are attacking their own right wing governor, who has proved over and over again that he is one of them, through his piggish behavior, for daring to enforce a law that actually helps people.  This is war!  He's been obsessive, I tell you, in trying to help sick people!  A psychological aberration if I've ever heard one.

Bill O'Reilly, Fox News:  "“Here comes Socialism… Obamacare is just part of the strategy of the forced sharing of American assets… It’s a socialist-communist vision that the state should provide all citizens a certain lifestyle, at the expense of other citizens. If healthcare was a constitutional right then everything associated with health would fall into the civil rights category. That’s a form of communism.“

Well, I guess that the whole industrialized world is Communist.  Because every industrialized country except the United States has government medical care, and now we do too.  So, I guess the Communists won.  Who knew?

Thomas Sowell, World Net Daily:  "Black mobs and the coming race war...Initial skirmishes in that race war have already begun and have in fact been going on for some years. But public officials pretend that it is not happening, and the mainstream media seldom publish it at all, except in ways that conceal what is really taking place... innumerable organized and unprovoked physical attacks on whites by young black gangs in shopping malls, on beaches and in other public places all across the country today."

Well, we all know that these black mobs running wild and attacking white people do not exists, and are just one of the most sickening lies spread by the right in its attempt to capitalize on racism, which is just about all they have left.  The only thing I want to comment on here, is that World Net Daily got Thomas Sowell, a black man, to put his name to this vicious, hate filled smear.  What a truly miserable little jerk he must be.

And now a little history lesson:

Barry Farber, World Net Daily:  "In World War II, Finland was a “co-belligerent” of Nazi Germany. They rejected the term “ally” because Finland was a democracy and they despised the Nazis. However, Hitler’s attack on the Soviet Union offered Finland the chance to reclaim land taken from them by the Soviet Union in the Winter War of 1939. As the sprawling convoys of Allied ships left England headed across the northern tip of Norway for the Russian ports of Archangel and Murmansk, one ship would peel away from the formation and head south for the Finnish port of Petsamo to unload American jeeps, tanks, tires, raincoats etc. for the Finnish Army that was fighting our ally, the Russians. In return, the Finns agreed not to cut the far northern Russian rail links from those northern Russian ports and not to allow their German “co-belligerents” to cut them, either.

I’d be willing to bet what I normally bet on the Super Bowl that our ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton didn’t know about that secret treaty!"

Well, I don't bet anything on the Super Bowl, but I'd be willing to get in on this one.  When this stuff took place, Hillary Clinton hadn't been born.

Cindy Simpson, American Thinker:  "The GOP establishment hopes to profit politically from the coming financial tsunami. Ted Cruz begs to differ."

Yeah, given his recent fund raising efforts, Ted Cruz hopes to profit monetarily from it.  Big difference there.

J. Christian Adams, PJ Media:  "Ted Cruz Won"

No comment needed.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "It’s Come to This… Obama Wants Marines to Wear Silly “Girly” Hats"

Because Obama personally picks out the Marines' uniforms.

Tim Dunkin, Renew America:  "The coming theft of our savings and wealth"
It's already gone, you stupid dick.  Didn't you notice that the last Republican administration stole it all?

And I bet this is going to come as a gigantic surprise to you:

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Issa Readies Subpoenas Over Obamacare Rollout"

Katie, who is one of the worst examples of news-bimboism to ever come to our attention, is now the "news editor" of Town Hall.  What a pathetic joke.

And from a comment on Katie's article:

"Libs have no sense of humor. "

We sure do, or no one would read Wingnut Wrapup.

And now here's a real scandal:

Susan Cornwell, Town Hall:  "The government official identified as being responsible for a last-minute decision that helped jam up the Obamacare health insurance website has been a frequent presence at the White House, according to visitor logs."

God forbid!  Obama should only be allowed to let people make decisions if he's never met them.

And if that wasn't a big enough atrocity for you:

World Net Daily:  "Democrat AG at party with drunk teens"

That would be not Eric Holder, but the Attorney General of Maryland who stopped by the house to give a message to his son, and didn't immediatley erupt into a volcano of outrage that some teens were drinking there.  Impeachment!!!!

Humberto Fontova:  "So When did the Cuban Missile Crisis become Kennedy’s “Victory?”

Since the day it happened, dimwit.  Humberto continues:

"That Khrushchev swept the floor with Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis was mainstream conservative conclusion throughout much of the Cold War."

I'm supplying this quote just in case there's anyone out there who still believes that the Republican party only went crazy a few years ago.

Erick Erickson, Red State:  " Lately, the left has taken to calling conservatives “Leninists” for our refusal to fix Obamacare."

They have, Erick?  Name one.  Man, these guys can't resist lying even when it doesn't get them anything.  Anyway, fat chance, Erick.  The Leninists won their revolution.  They didn't fail miserably and go home without a thing.

Ilana Mercer, World Net Daily:  "Why government 'care' will never, ever work"

I guess because it has never worked anywhere it has been tried.  Oh wait...it's worked everywhere it's been tried.  Ilana forgot to mention that.

World net Daily:  "Now 'Hitler' blasts Obamacare failure ..."

You know what?  After a few seconds reflection, I don't even want to know what that is about.

Daren Jonescu, American Thinker:  "When Frogs Jump"

I don't want to know what this is about either.  In fact, I don't want to know anything more about what these jackasses have to say today.  'Bye!

Where Are They Now?

Big news this last week about two past visitors to Green Eagle's pages.

First, we hear that two members of one of the far right's premier families have been (once again) arrested.  Cheyne Kehoe and his father Kirby, both members of the Christian Identity movement and (of course) violent Aryan supremacists, were held on charges that they were felons in possession of a large quantity of guns.  Cheyne and his brother Chevie have been implicated in a number of murders and other crimes in connection with their plan to establish an Aryan homeland in the northwest.  Chevie, the worst of the lot, is where he belongs, safely ensconced in prison, where he will soon be joined (again) by his brother and father.  Here, if you are interested, is a bit of history of this miserable family.
Chevie in all his glory.

And also, news of Phill Kline, the former attorney general of Kansas, and one of the nation's most vicious persecutors of abortion providers:

"Citing “clear and convincing evidence” of professional misconduct, the Kansas Supreme Court on Friday indefinitely suspended the law license of former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline.

The disciplinary action that led to Friday’s order arose from Kline’s investigation of abortion clinics while he was attorney general, and from his handling of a grand jury proceeding while Johnson County’s district attorney."

And Kline's response?

"Thomas Condit, a Cincinnati lawyer who represents Kline in the case, said Friday’s action was based on a “cherry picking” of oral and written comments over a period of many years..."

Yeah, cherry picking his comments for crimes.  They left out the things that didn't prove that he was a criminal.  How unfair.

Well, small victories, but at least it's nice to see a couple of long-time right wing jerks get at least a small measure of the consequences they deserve.

A Little History Concerning Right Wing Marches

I've spent some time lately documenting the ludicrous "marches on Washington" which seem to be on the agenda of right wingers every few weeks now.  The phenomenon seems strange to us, because these events seem to inevitably fall laughably short of what we imagine it would take to alter the government's actions.

This is because of our perspective.  When liberals, or even moderates, think of large antigovernment demonstrations, what we inevitably remember are the marches on Washington of the civil rights era, and the anti-Vietnam protests of the late sixties.  These marches mobilized massive numbers of people, unprecedented in our nation's history, and did in fact contribute to reforming civil rights laws and ending our disastrous involvement in Vietnam.  When we compare the minuscule crowds attracted by the teabagger marches of late to these events, it seems preposterous that the wingnuts think they are going to change anything.

What we do not realize is that, in planning their activities, it is not these historical precedents that the right is looking to, but in fact an event that hardly anyone in this country outside of the hard right has ever heard of, but of which they are acutely aware- Mussolini's march on Rome, in 1922, in which a group of 30,000 or less actually did succeed in demolishing the existing government and replacing it with an avowedly Fascist one.
A view of the March on Rome, although there is a good possibility
that the event pictured here was actually taken after the Italian
government had capitulated.

Here's a little bit of history about this event:
"In November 1921, the fascist parties of Italy joined forces to create the Fascist Party. It became an official political party. In its October 1922 party conference, Mussolini said:  "Either the government will be given to us or will shall seize it by marching on Rome."
Mussolini, with the party’s hierarchy, drew up a blueprint on how to do this.
1. Fascists would be brought into Rome from all over Italy
2. All-important public buildings would be taken over including those outside of Rome in the important cities in the north.
3. Mussolini would demand the resignation of the government and that a new Fascist government be allowed to take over.
4. Armed Fascists would be near Rome. If the government failed to meet these demands, they would march into Rome and take over by the use of force.  The plan was grandiose if na├»ve. The military in Rome far out-numbered the Fascists who were poorly armed...
However, Mussolini gambled on one thing. He believed that the Italian government lead by Facta and the king, Victor Emmanuel, did not want any form of conflict...Mussolini was correct with regards to the king. Victor Emmanuel was convinced that any form of conflict would lead to a civil war and he was not willing to contemplate that."
And as we know right wingers see Barack Obama as a weak, vacillating leader like Victor Emmanuel, who fell prey to the Fascist  plot, handing the leadership of Italy to Mussolini for 23 years.  Of course, it all ended like this:

In fact, the march may have been far smaller than the 30,000 that seems to be the generally accepted number.  From a BBC article written on the eightieth anniversary of the march:
"The ironic fact about Mussolini's march on Rome in 1922 was that he and most of his black-shirted followers travelled to Rome from Milan by train, first class
There was no march.
But to satisfy his inordinate vanity, Mussolini, a master of propaganda, later created the myth of the march on Rome.  He inflated the figures from the reality of a few hundred black-shirts to a mythical army of 300,000 fascists led by him in person on horseback."
Mussolini "leading" the "march."  He sure did know how to pose
to make people think it was all about him.

This is the fevered dream of the right in this country today.  Here, for example is a reproduction of a Fascist poster from the right wing Stormfront site:

On the right, people are keenly aware of this, but Ted Cruz and his fellow travelers are sure that things will work out so much better this time around.  They have convinced themselves that a display of armed force by a few thousand resolute "patriots" committed to the rule of force can really dislodge the American government and replace it with what they are really after: a Fascist dictatorship; and that is what they are going to continue working toward, until their humiliations mount so high that they are swept away, or until this behavior ends up with them where they belong- alongside Mussolini, hanging by their feet in a gas station.

They Are Incapable of Facing Reality

And a good thing too.  We all know that all the right would have to do is show about five percent of sanity, and the mainstream press would fall all over itself praising how wise and reasonable and bipartisan they were.  Look how they have tried to make principled intellectuals out of the lying scum Paul Ryan and the corrupt Antonin Scalia.

Well, we know that the right will not turn its back on Ted Cruz, no matter how much damage he does, and here is a perfect example from the allegedly religious Bryan Fischer, one of the right's standby commenters:

"The silver lining: conservative movement now has a leader in Ted Cruz"

This is the one silver lining in the dark and gloomy budget-debt ceiling showdown cloud. A clear and universally recognized leader of the conservative movement has emerged, and his name is Ted Cruz."

He sure has emerged- a leader who just led them to their biggest humiliation in a couple of decades.  But apparently, that is what passes for success if your ability to deny reality is strong enough.

"Cruz singlehandedly energized the conservative grassroots with his filibuster on behalf of defunding the monstrosity of ObamaCare."

Of course, to the other 85% of the country, he put on a repellent show of ego that did nothing but sicken people.

"If a man is known by the enemies he makes – and I believe he is – Ted Cruz is ticking off all the right people."

Yeah, but he is ticking off all the wrong people, because he is ticking off everyone.  Everyone except the hopeless, incurable haters who still cling to their dream of a country run by and for old, white people.

"In last night's debt ceiling vote, 62% of Republican members of the House voted against this bill which their own leader brought to the floor over their objections. All of which raises the question: why is this man still Speaker of the House?"

Because, you dimwit, he is Speaker of the House, not Speaker of the Republicans.  He (finally) allowed a massive majority of the members of both parties to put a stop to the treasonous attempt of the Republican "base" to do away with majority rule in the United States, and replace it with rule of the most belligerent and willing to harm others.

"The bottom line: the conservative army now has a general"

A general who just led you to a colossal defeat.  Good luck with that, and never change, Bryan.  We love you just the way you are.

Insurrection Watch Part 4

A really short one today.  Some of you may remember that there was supposed to be another teabag march on Washington yesterday.  I can understand them not being in the best of moods to go off on an adventure, what with their plan to destroy democracy being temporarily put on hold and all, but really...I can't find a single article about this march, pro or con.  I guess absolutely no one showed up, which truly represents a new low for these miserable, America-hating lunatics, and one that they (for obvious reasons) are going to have trouble topping.

Obvious, that is, if you know enough arithmetic to understand that the concept of "less than zero" has little application when it comes to counting demonstrations.  Most of the teabaggers don't seem to possess much skill in arithmetic, however, so the joke may be lost on them.

Well, we'll just have to wait a whole month now, for Larry Klayman to bring the United States to an abrupt end.  Green Eagle will be all over that story, so we can all get a good laugh over Larry's explanation for why he failed miserably.

Dementia

I hope you are able to spare about eight minutes of your lives to watch the following speech made by Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate today.  It is one of the most deranged things I have ever heard in my life, and if this man believes even a small part of what he is saying, he is truly in need of psychiatric care.

Chances are good that this man is just a sociopathic liar who doesn't give a God damn for the truth,, as long as he can feed his delusion that he is the new Messiah, sent to rescue the world from Satanic demons.  But if he does believe any of this, he is a very disturbed individual.

I guess sociopaths are disturbed too, so he is deeply dysfunctional, regardless of how much he believes what he is saying- I can't even decide what would be worse- if he is a true believer or if he is a demagogue.  Whatever he is, we can be thankful that he has scared off the leaders of his own party, because this is the material out of which tyrants are made.

Another Liberal Starts To Face Reality

John Aravosis, at Americablog, had this to say today:

"I’ve been trying to figure out why so many of the Tea Partyers who now run the Republican party are so convinced that there won’t be dire consequences to not raising the debt ceiling, and it finally hit me.

Conservatives think that, come Thursday, we can service the debt by “simply” not paying any more Social Security checks.

Conservative thinker George Will yesterday walked Fox News through how “easily” we can pay our debt by simply cutting all other spending.

Note that Will’s intent, and the intent of the conservative site that posted the dialogue, is to prove how “silly” it is that anyone is talking about an imminent default. It’s easy to avoid default, they argue – just stop issuing Social Security checks to seniors"

It's funny that, even the most cynical left wingers are still hardly able to accept the malignant evil which has infected the Republican party.  It takes near-catastrophe for them to face how badly the Republicans are betraying the country.

I have been saying for weeks now that what the Republicans are up to is forcing Obama to either deal with their threats by actions that will give them an excuse to impeach him, or to deplete the Social Security trust fund and destroy Social Security.  When it comes to choosing between the tens of millions of older people who have supported him over the years, or the Koch brothers, the Republicans know perfectly well who pays to keep them in office, and that is where their allegiance lies.  They are deliberately working to destroy the United States as it has always existed, and replace it with a fascist dictatorship.  That's why they don't care if they mangle the economy- economic chaos has always been a friend of the fascists, and they are ready to try it again.

The country has narrowly avoided a coup this week, but the attempts will continue as long as people like the Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson are allowed to have enough money to pervert our electoral process.  At some time in the near future, we are going to need to take that money away from people like them, not because we are envious or jealous, not to "redistribute" their money, but because if their fortunes survive, we will not.

Enough Already

Green Eagle has been very depressing today, so nothing will do but this:
Well, it was worth a try.

The Very Depressing Truth

I found this article by "Partisan Hack" at Daily Kos.  I want to quote a couple of lengthy segments from it, because it encapsulates much of what I have been saying on this blog, and for many years before.  When I first began telling this story, most everyone thought I was crazy, but now, finally, some others are starting to see the ugly truth.  Is it too late?  Maybe it is.  I think we are going to find out soon.  Anyway, here goes:

"...we are in the middle of what Tea Party advocates seem to hope is nothing less than the destruction of The United States of America itself...The Tea Party draws on white supremacist sentiment that has been a part of U.S. history since its beginnings, augmenting it with pro-Nazi sentiments fueled by the so-called Fellowship Foundation of "key men" (and, sometimes, women) starting in the mid-20th century. Their purpose is completely clear; split the U.S. so that it can be destroyed, and replaced with a far right police state benefiting a few elites.

As with the rise of Hitler during Germany's Weimar Republic, the Tea Party uses economic and social chaos to fuel its rise. It undermines faith in democratic processes at every turn, so that people will favor "strong man" governments - governments that will benefit the "key men" first and foremost and further the redistribution of wealth from average people to the elites. The Nazis of Weimar Germany also used resentment against Europe and moderate Germans for the perceived unfairness of war reparation payments after World War I to fuel nationalism, much in the same way that the Tea Party fuels resentment against the fall of the "Southern Cause" with its encouragement of Confederate flag-waving and the use of the proxy Gadsden Flag from South Carolina's troops in the War of Independence.

What we are engaged in is not an economic fight, or even a political fight. What we're engaged in is in fact a fight for the last chance for a democracy in the United States for the foreseeable future. The billionaire lords of the Tea Party. like the industrialists backing Hitler, want to wage economic and military war on anyone who might interfere with their accretion of wealth, both in this nation and beyond...Sadly, I don't think that the U.S. public really gets this - or really gets that they are in a battle where they are still the majority against this hardened and fantasy-based group of extremists. Hitler rose to power in part because everyday people became exhausted, beaten down by harsh economic realities, a beating aided and abetted by a flaccid and complacent media. So it is again today. Little has been learned in a century, unfortunately, it would seem."

I agree completely with every word of this.  Unfortunately, it is beyond the capacity of most people in this country, bombarded as they are from birth with fairy tales about how we are the only perfect nation in history, to see the peril swirling up around them.  In that lies the real danger that the United States has already virtually lost the battle to survive as a free country, and that we are about to be taught a very cruel lesson in how the most civilized country in the West, Germany, could fall into barbarism beyond anything the world had ever seen.

And I ask you to remember, if you are tempted to comfort yourselves with the notion that Hitler was eventually defeated, at a cost of 50 million lives, that the new fuhrers of our country will have something Hitler never had: a thousand nuclear weapons.

Insurrection Watch- Part Three

Well, things are moving fast and furious now!  Not content to sit silent between now and Larry Klayman's overthrow of the government on November 19th, Conservatives are intent on capitalizing on their recent "success" by keeping up the pressure on Obama.  Here's an exclusive from World Net Daily:

"5.5 million vets get behind newest rally...Veterans have rallied against the federal government’s actions in Washington several times lately, including over the weekend when they carried barricades – some called them “barrycades” – over to the White House lawn where they dumped them.  So have bikers.  So have truckers.  But now, according to a report in the Army Times, a group representing about 5.5 million Americans – service members, veterans, retirees and their families – will be rallying on Tuesday."

Bikers- a total failure.  The Truckers- even worse.  The veterans on Sunday- they got about 250 people to come to their "million man march."  So, here they come again, folks!  Judging from previous performance, we might expect their 5.5 million veterans  to turn out to amount to about 1400.  I'll be surprised at this point if they can even do that.

Here's World Net Daily's account of the latest wingnut failure:

"The memorial in Washington was the scene of fireworks over the weekend, when thousands of Americans stormed into the nation’s capital and tore down barricades blocking the World War II Memorial Sunday.

“Barrycades are down,” tweeted Sherry Lucas, a reference to President Barack Obama’s childhood nickname of Barry.

Many of the barricades were then hand-carried by the protesters and dumped in front of the White House."

An impressive feat.  Well, except for the fact that WND's count of the demonstrators is (following a long right wing tradition) about ten times the truth.

For those who feel more comfortable with visual images, try this- here's the French revolution:
And here's our current brave teabag revolutionaries:
Not quite the same thing, fellas.  It's really time for you to figure it out.

Mark Kessler Still Fighting for LIBERTY!

Mark Kessler may be just about out (of his erstwhile police chief job) but he's not down:

"As he waits for his termination as Gilberton Police Chief to be official, Mark Kessler is starting a militia.

"were going to create a nation wide militia...we are going to need people ready willing and able.... (s--t) talkers need not apply !!! I RECALL SOMEONE STATING ( WE NEED A CIVILIAN DEFENSE FORCE JUST AS STRONG, JUST AS POWERFUL AS OUR MILITARY, well we got the DHS!!!! NOW IT'S OUR TIME TO BE JUST AS STRONG , JUST AS POWERFUL"

JUST AS POWERFUL AS OUR MILITARY!!!!

Any day now, he's going to be placing an order for a few of these:
What a dickhead.

Where We Are Today

Well, I think this is what is clear about the Republicans' current behavior:

Their entire plan was to shut the government down and blame the whole thing on the Democrats.  That's it- there was no more to it than that.  You can see this in the way that, every time one of them got near a microphone, all they have wanted to do for weeks was to claim that the shutdown was all the Democrats' fault.  But they ran into a slight hitch.  They counted on the compliant mainstream press to carry water for them, and by and large the press came through.  The problem was that this time around, their fairy tales were so utterly preposterous that they haven't been able to sell people on them.

Well, now they are facing an economic apocalypse, and they are such a belligerent, hostile bunch of people that they can't find a way to walk back from the edge of the cliff.  So, what is going to be their strategy if they do send the world economy into chaos?  I believe they have two tricks up their sleeves.  First of all, they are going to try to back Obama into a corner, where he has to take whatever action he can to prevent a catastrophe from taking place, and then they are going to impeach him for exceeding his powers, no matter what he does.  Second, when there is not enough money to pay our debts, they are going to try to force Obama to prioritize payments to our "creditors," i.e. corporations and nations that have boughgt our bonds, at the expense of Social Security and Medicare recipients.  They are going to try to force the government to either dip into the Social Security trust fund to cover these payments, at which point they will scream that Social Security needs to be destroyed because it is running out of money, or they will try to see to it that Social Security recipients are just stiffed.

In either case, they are betting that they can generate an overwhelming sense of rage in the voting populace, which they believe they can manipulate to their own benefit.  With an economy in shambles and a President in the process of being impeached, they are sure they can win big victories in 2014.  And if they do succeed in taking back control of the Senate in 2014, they will actually be able to remove Obama and Biden from office.

Then the fun begins.  Boehner already is barely clinging to his position as speaker of the house, the next in line to be President.  As the removal of Obama grows closer, you can expect to see a scene among the likes of Ted Cruz, Paul Ryan, Eric Cantor, et. al. like something out of medieval Florence- a vicious fight to the death over who will be speaker on the day that Obama is driven from office.  The person who emerges on top in that struggle is going to be as far from a democratically elected leader as Pol Pot or Idi Amin, and believe me, he will act accordingly.

Will it happen?  Well, I think the Republicans are vastly overestimating the support they have for this sort of behavior, as can be seen in such things as their million man marches that draw 200 people.  I don't believe they can win this game, but they can incite some real ugliness before they go down.

Update:  So, Louie Gohmert said today that if Congress allowed the government to go into default, that in itself would be a reason to impeach Obama, even if he does nothing.  So, they are getting ready to pull the trigger on impeachment, whether Obama does anything at all.

Get it over with, already, you sons of bitches.  We know that's what you want to do.  Do your worst, and then we can line you all up against a wall and shoot you down for the traitors you are.

Wingnut Wrapup

Delusion of the month!

Ann Coulter, Town Hall:  "In the current fight over the government shutdown, Republicans are simply representing the views of the American people. "

Oh, excuse me...did I say delusion?  I meant to say lie.

Jackie Gingrich Cushman, Town Hall:  "The current budget impasse might have made you a bit blue. Ups and downs are normal in life, but when the potential of a debt default is the news, it's easy to forget the ups.

In "Learned Optimism, How to Change Your Mind and Your Life," Martin Seligman provides a map to a more optimistic outlook.  As a graduate student in experimental psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, Seligman studied dogs ..."

"A more optimistic outlook"- i.e. lying to yourself.  Go for it, Jackie.  It's the only optimism you're going to get.

John Ransom, Town Hall:  "Not all conservatives are uber-rich, mansion-living, jet-setters like Al Gore and John Kerry."

No, of course not.  Most of them are just deluded suckers who have been so blinded by your lies that they don't even notice you destroying their lives.

Courtney O'Brien, Town Hall:  "Uncovered: New Bill Could Expose Obamacare's Hidden Abortion Surcharge"

Which is going to be a really good trick, since Obamacare's abortion surcharge is so hidden that it doesn't exist.

Matt Towery, Town Hall:  "What has happened to our country?  We have a president who seems unwilling to declare that we are the greatest nation on earth."

And we are, too.  Except in life expectancy, distribution of wealth, availability of health care, imprisonment rates, childhood poverty, upward mobility, social welfare programs and about a hundred other things.  Other than that, we are THE GREATEST NATION ON EARTH, and if you don't accept that, we'll destroy the economy.  Then we'll be EVEN GREATER!!!!

Rich Galen, Town Hall:  "Elections Have Consequences"

Just not ones that Democrats win.

Jack Kerwick, Town Hall:  "The GOP is Winning...The Republicans are winning the fight over the government shut down. "

If by "winning," you mean "getting the crap kicked out of you."
Sonny Liston winning his fight against Muhammad Ali, Republican style

Jack notes that Republican poll numbers are in the worst dive since the last Kamikaze flights of World War II, but thinks that is just great, because Obama's polling has gone down two points.  Self immolation is just wonderful if you can inflict any kind of minor damage on the Democrats.  Well, go for it guys.  Here's another wonderful bit of news for Republicans that Jack gleaned from current polls:

"Ted Cruz—you know, the Texas Senator whose 21-plus hour charge to defund Obamacare was supposed to have done permanent damage to the Republican brand—scarcely even registers with those polled: most Americans, supposedly, aren’t aware of who he is. "

How to tell when your party is in real trouble: Your major leader in the current political situation is unknown to most voters, and that's the good news.

Erick Erickson, Red State:  "It seems the GOP has taken a hint and will continue the fight on Obamacare by punting the debt ceiling discussion six weeks to Thanksgiving. I think this is wise"

Republicans are going to continue the fight by giving up.  Conservative reasoning at its finest, yes sir.

Daniel Horowitz, Red State:  "Now It’s Time for Full Throttle Defund of Obamacare"

Now's the time?  What else have you jackasses been doing for the last three years?  Or have you forgotten your 42 Congressional votes demanding that the President abandon established law?

Betsey McCaughey, Human Events:  "Obama’s dangerous claim to executive power...His views on presidential power ought to alarm all Americans.  “I will not pay ransom,” said Obama, for a stopgap-spending bill to open the government."

I can't even think of a clever remark for this one.  You all know what there is about this President that means for the first time in history he has no "presidential power."

And now, possibly the least valuable column ever written:

PJ Media:  "What Books Does Jonah Goldberg Recommend for 2013?"

Given Jonah's oft displayed mental capacity, I'm stunned that Green Eggs and Ham and My Pet Goat didn't make the list.  On the other hand, I guess the vocabulary in Green Eggs and Ham might be a bit advanced for Jonah.  Better stick with Pat the Bunny, dude.

Roger Simon, PJ Media:  "What if They Shut Down the Entire Government?"

Why it would be just fine!  Well, Roger doesn't quite want to shut the entire government, just the parts that don't help him personally- useless things like schools and regulations on companies, etc.  That would be just great!

Anna Githens, Renew America:  "Christopher Columbus: genocidal tyrant or God's faithful servant?"

Probably somewhere in between, don't you think, Anna?

And now, the new Benghazi!

Lee DeCovnick, American Thinker:  "We, the people, demand that our elected representatives compel the White House  to release the names of those who came up with the idea to withhold the military death benefit, and those in the White House who authorized this heinous act. In military matters the buck stops in the Oval Office. Until Jay Carney tells us who these folks are, and who in the White House authorized that choice, the American people shall irrevocably hold our Commander in Chief, B.H. Obama, personally responsible for this horror."

Oh God, get ready for this.  Once Darryl Issa gets up to speed on this one, there will be no end to it.

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Republicans backing away from leveraging Obamacare "

Leveraging.  I've never heard that euphemism for "destroying" before.  Well, I guess that's the Republican term for it, now that their efforts are turning into a gigantic failure.

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "...according to Ace of Spades' Gabriel Minor, National Park Service rangers were buzzing around in a helicopter yesterday during the veterans' protest of barricaded memorials on the mall.   Respect please . . . While an NPS police helicopter buzzes us. Bastards."

Bastards!  Keeping an eye on people who want to overthrow the government!  How dare they!

Allen West:  "Obama is a Spoiled Brat"

Well, at least he's not a war criminal who was kicked out of the U.S. military for torturing prisoners.

Before It's News:  " Jonathan kleck decrypts the new $100 bill and the new $10 bill. Do these bills show both a New York City nuclear attack AND a tidal wave as claimed by Jonathan?  According to Jonathan, the two bills together tell the story of a nuclear event taking place on the East Coast promulgated by the US Government– which Jonathan feels is spiritually inspired by Satan and his fallen angels."

Right.  Take it for what it's worth.  They're going to blow up the east coast, so they put pictures of it on our money.  That makes sense.

Walter Hudson, PJ Media:  "Why Christians, Jews, and Everyone Else Better Take an Interest in Heaven and Hell"

Because...Oh, wait a minute.  Why am I wasting time on this nonsense?

Tommy Thompson, Western Center for Journalism:  "The Alabama Supreme Court May Collapse Obama’s House Of Cards...Now we have a new (birth certificate) case before the Alabama Supreme Court. This case is McInnish/Goode v. Beth Chapman (SOS). It is being handled by famous attorney Larry Klayman."
The "famous attorney" Larry Klayman!  Now, where have we heard his name recently?  Oh yeah, he's the guy who is going to overthrow the U.S. government next month!  If I were his clients, I wouldn't spend much money on Larry- by the time this case comes to court, the judiciary won't exist any more.

Silvio Canto, American Thinker:  "There is a better chance of Candy Crowley going to FOX than Senator Paul going Democrat"

You've got that right, Silvio.  We wouldn't touch that lunatic with a stick.  You made him- you're stuck with him.  And that goes double for Louie Gohmert and Ted Cruz.

Where Do These People Come From?

Ever wonder how a malicious lunatic like Ted Cruz materializes out of seemingly nowhere, and all of a sudden he seems to be pulling the strings of half the members of Congress?

Ted Cruz has a wife.  Her name is Heidi.  She is an executive with Goldman Sachs, and is a former economic policy adviser to the George W. Bush administration, dating back to 2000.

Does it make any more sense now?

Insurrection Watch 2013- Part Two

Oh, did I mention that the Truckers for the Constitution event in Washington D.C. this weekend was an unmitigated failure?  I didn't?  Well, then, it seems that, from the entire country, 30 big rigs showed up and about 15 jerks in pickups trying to get in on the fun.  Or, to put it another way, just about exactly what you would expect from one of these massively promoted and publicized right wing events, since they all turn out that way.  Funny thing, up until Friday, the wingnut blogosphere was full of stories about what a massive event this was going to be.  Now...nothing.  They have not a word to say about their latest failure.

That doesn't mean that these neo-Confederate insurrectionists are quiet...oh no!  Yesterday and this morning, they were full of predictions of the massive, life-changing event that was going to occur in Washington today- one that Green Eagle hasn't even mentioned yet, absorbed as he was with Constitution-loving truckers and all.  This is the Million Vets March On Washington!  Once again, this exciting event has been receiving massive publicity from right wing websites, with comments like these proliferating:

"Barrycades down! Spite House barricades no match for Million Vets March"
"America, Today’s Veteran’s March Means Everything…THIS IS OUR RED LINE MOMENT"

Well, sad to say, the RED LINE MOMENT didn't quite pan out as predicted.  Here (as has become a tradition at Green Eagle) are a couple of photos from this event, the chief attraction of which (other than the apparently useless appearance of Sarah Palin) was the uprooting of barriers from the World War II monument and the carrying of them a couple of blocks to the front of the White House, which was definite proof of...something:

Green Eagle's arithmetic skills may not be quite what they once were, but he is pretty sure that there are not a million people in any of these pictures.  CBS calls the size of the demonstration at "several hundred," which seems charitable under the circumstances, since on a Sunday on the mall, a fair number of the people in these photos must be bystanders drawn in by the (very minuscule) hoopla.

So, as expected, the tone has changed among the right wing bloggers:

"If just one person had shown up it would be a success for them."
"No, it was a success, no matter how the American hating liberals spin it."

Well, one person did show up, so I guess this was a success, even though America hating liberals like Green Eagle engage in the dastardly treason of showing how many people turned up for this event, the latest colossal failure in a seemingly endless series of marches, stretching back to the dawn of the tea party.

Nevertheless, the next one and the one after that and the one after that, ad infinitum, will, before they occur, be the subjects of endless crowing predictions of triumph from the right, only to be utterly forgotten by them after their inevitable failure.

Note:  As is my practice, whenever I cover these events, I try to include photos showing the largest number of people I can find.  Today's is the shot of the front of the Lincoln monument.  I want to show the truth here, so I think that is only fair.

The Most Preposterous Republican Insanity Yet

How many times have we seen headlines like that?  This time, unfortunately, I think they've really set a new mark in delusion.  From one of the widest read Conservative websites in existence, Town Hall, comes this masterpiece of paranoia and willful self delusion:
"Obama Ready to Terminate 16 U.S. States
If we have insufficient cash on hand, it would be impossible for the United States of America to meet all of its obligations," said Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, on Wednesday.
There simply isn't enough cash on hand to pay the country's bills. And without Congress' approval to raise the debt ceiling, the Treasury will write its first-ever bad check...
Americans, however, remain totally in the dark to the reality of what's coming.
In fact, a controversial, just-released investigation details exactly what history says is certain to happen."
Let me make it clear here that the "just-released investigation" is by who knows whom; and that this article gives absolutely zero details of its supposed methods or findings.  Okay?  Back to business here:
"Sixteen (16) U.S. States Ready for Termination...Is your state is on the termination list?
In event of a default, it would only take 60 minutes for the country to begin to unravel. That is, according to a four-month investigation released by a team of the world's top financial and political experts.
How serious is this threat? Enough that the federal government already has a disaster plan in place...within an hour later, the federal government would issue emergency notification that its disaster map is in effect.
"The United States of America would look dramatically different," says renowned global analyst, Karim Rahemtulla, adding that "not every state will survive."
Well, we only hope they start by kicking out the most Republican ones, since they will be the most responsible for whatever happens.  Notice again that this psychotic claim is not backed up with a single verifiable fact or a single real detail of this supposed plan.

And please remember that this accusation that Obama is preparing to eject sixteen States from the country comes from one of the most prominent "news" sources in the Conservative world.

Not that I'm that opposed to the idea, actually.  I have often said that the worst thing that has happened in the entire history of the United States is when the North won the Civil War.  Without that pack of hate and greed filled, mentally subnormal assholes (I'm talking white people only, of course), what a better country this would be.  And at this point, the Confederacy could have North and South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, and the bottom half of Arizona too.  (I'm not giving away the Grand Canyon.)  Let them show us what kind of a magnificent country, just chock full of Liberty and Patriotism and Freedom, they will build.  Maintaining the 40 foot high electrified border fence and the snarling attack dogs all around the Confederacy will be a small price to pay to be rid of them.  But the notion that Obama is preparing to do this is either a sign of paranoid delusions of the highest magnitude, or demonstration of a capacity for lying previously unknown to mankind.

Insurrection Watch 2013

These things are coming so fast and furious now, that Green Eagle feels the need to start a new series to deal with them.

As is becoming increasingly clear even to some members of the mainstream press, such as Bill Moyers, the right in this country is currently in the process of fomenting an insurrection designed to destroy whatever semblance of democratic rule is left in the United States.  They are still in a stage where they are attempting to accomplish this through bullying and economic sabotage, but the threat of violence always lurks in the background.  A perfect example was the gun-owners' march on Washington promoted by a (now-former) police chief from Pennsylvania, who insisted that his plan to have a million armed right wingers show up in Washington was entirely peaceful, and any trouble that resulted would be solely the fault of Obama and the government.  Of course, up to now, these events have been colossal failures, producing little more than the few laughs that Green Eagle and others have gotten out of them.  However, it is my fear that, as it becomes increasingly clear to more and more right wingers that they will never succeed in forcing their theocratic dictatorship on the country through legal means, they will inevitably move on to worse and worse displays of their anger, until it takes some really ugly scenes to put them down.

Here are a couple of the latest proposed events which their organizers hope will mark the beginning of a rebellion which they fantasize as in the mold of the American Revolution, but which, of course, have far more to do with the Southern war of treason of the 1860's.

The first is being promoted by Larry Klayman, a former Reagan administration employee and the self-appointed head of an organization called Judicial Watch, which specializes in filing tendentious, and almost inevitably rejected, lawsuits against Democrats.  He filed 18 against Clinton, for example.  He was also deeply involved in the "Swift boat" smears against John Kerry, and has been a key actor in the birth certificate nonsense, where his lawsuits have been unceremoniously tossed out of court.

Well, Larry had a recent post at one of Green Eagle's favorite right wing sites, Renew America, which is getting some attention the last few days, so I am going to give you a taste.  Unlike my normal practice, I will link to it in case you want to experience it in all its glory.  Well, here's a sample:

"The events of this week, combined with the last five years of Obama's so called "phony scandals" and other outrages designed to subvert the rule of law and our freedoms as a whole – all in pursuit of his anti-Christian, anti-Semitic, anti-white, socialist Islamic agenda – are another reminder why the "Muslim in Chief" must be removed from office without further delay."
Without further delay!!!
"A citizens' grand jury, with yours truly as its people's prosecutor, as you readers know, has not only indicted and convicted Obama for fraud over his lack of eligibility to be president, but also pending are indictments and more trials over his illegal misuse of the National Security Agency (NSA) to spy on, coerce and enslave Americans whom he despises and who stand in his way of totalitarian control of the nation. We also have pending civil class action lawsuits against him and his jack-booted thugs at NSA and its enabler, Eric Holder, regrettably our current attorney general. The U.S. Justice Department, now a cesspool of corruption under Holder and his master Obama, was my former employer when I was a federal prosecutor during the Reagan administration. Then, unlike today, there was still a modicum of integrity left in the government's legal establishment."
A modicum of integrity, as demonstrated by the out and out treason of the Iran Contra affair. In case you are not familiar with the phenomenon, a "citizens' grand jury" is a gang of self-appointed jackasses who have decided that they have the right to put people in prison for the crime of being sane.
"Obama and his minions are destroying the country and exposing us to unacceptable future annihilation at the hands of his Muslim brothers."
And who could argue with that?

Well, that will be a really exciting day, don't you think?  But wait, there's more!  With the humiliating failure of the Biker's march on Washington a few days ago, vehicle owners are apparently going to up the ante:

"'Truckers for the Constitution' Plan to Slow D.C. Beltway, Arrest Congressmen...Police must detain 'accessories' to 'treason' or truckers will, organizer says...
Tractor-trailer drivers will intentionally clog the inner loop of the Washington, D.C., beltway beginning on the morning of Oct. 11, according to a coordinator of the upcoming "Truckers Ride for the Constitution" rally...to seek the arrest of congressmen for allegedly disregarding the Constitution."
 Man, that'll show them.
"Zeeda Andrews, a former country music singer helping promote the protest, said last week participants would present demands to congressmen – including the impeachment of President Barack Obama... "we're asking for the arrest of everyone in government who has violated their oath of office."
And here's Zeeda, singing one of her country masterpieces.  Zeeda apparently subscribes to the belief that Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden are actually the same person.  That's the sort of clear thinking that we need to set the country back on the right track.

"(Earl) Conlon  (an organizer of the "protest") cited the idea of a citizens grand jury – meaning a pool of jurors convened without court approval – as the mechanism for indicting the officials.
"We want these people arrested, and we're coming in with the grand jury to do it," he said. "We are going to ask the law enforcement to uphold their constitutional oath and make these arrests. If they refuse to do it, by the power of the people of the United States and the people's grand jury, they don't want to do it, we will. ... We the people will find a way."

Man, the citizens grand jury again.  Say, it already is October 11th!  I wonder how the Truckers for the Constitution did today?

"Trucker protest hits Beltway but causes no major delays, authorities say...
There were police reports of about 30 tractor trailers with American flags and signs for their protest — “Truckers Ride for the Constitution” — driving at the same speed as the rest of traffic on the Beltway in Friday morning’s rush hour...The trucker protesters seemed to be but a mere blip on the traffic cameras of area police officials."

Whoops!  It looks like heavy rain caused far more delay than the truckers- all 30 of them.

Once again (as always) the teabag assholes have proven to be utter failures.  Think Larry Klayman will do any better?  Don't put any money on it.

Well, That's One Way To Keep Your Job

At least for a little longer.  When we last checked in on crazed Pennsylvania police chief Mark Kessler, he was suffering a humiliating failure of his Peace Officers' March On Washington, intended to force Barack Obama from office, where no one showed up.  Well, this week was the hearing on whether to fire this sorry excuse for a human being.  Didn't quite go according to plan:

"A public hearing for suspended Gilberton, Pa. police Chief Mark Kessler, whose YouTube gun demonstration videos drew national attention, was cut short Thursday night when a man dropped a semi-automatic pistol on the floor, the Republican Herald reported."

Another successful use of a firearm by a very well regulated militiaman.

What They Are Up To

So what is behind the Republicans' delusional claim that nothing bad will happen if they let the debt ceiling expire?  Here's what I suspect:  Their actual goal is to force President Obama, in order to prevent the nation from going into default, and to comply with the 14th amendment, to raid the Social Security trust fund to pay our current bills.  If they can keep it up long enough, they think they can bankrupt Social Security and destroy it through this underhanded tactic.

As usual, to Republicans, everything is a chance to divert more of our wealth from ordinary people into the hands of the rich, and in the process, they have turned the really rich (who control our politics today) into insatiable, slavering monsters who must be fed more and more of what the middle class has left.

Obama is Hitler, Again...

It is inevitable that, with the current undercurrent of violence which pervades the right these days, the idiotic claim that Obama is just like Hitler would be heard again.  Here's an example from Brenda Barton, a Republican legislator from Arizona a couple of days ago:

"Someone is paying the National Park Service thugs overtime for their efforts to carry out the order of De Fuhrer... where are our Constitutional Sheriffs who can revoke the Park Service Rangers authority to arrest??? Do we have any Sheriffs with a pair?"

Barton is of course now claiming that, in referring to Obama as "De Fuhrer (sic)" she never meant to compare him to Hitler.  Oh, of course not, Brenda- what would ever make us think that calling someone "De Fuhrer" could be construed as comparing them to Hitler?  Well, I am not going to go on with Brenda or the other right wing outbreaks of this malicious nonsense, but I am going to reprint here a very early post of mine, from about six months into Obama's term, when there was another outbreak of Hitler-calling.  It deals with what really happened in the first six months after Hitler became the head of the German government"

A Comment on the Great Obama-Hitler Delusion

Of all the blithering idiocies that make up the black-is-white phony reality of the right, none is more bizarre than the currently popular delusion that the Nazis were actually liberals. In support of this malicious distortion, conservative spokesmen have taken to openly comparing the behavior of the Obama administration to the first few months of another government- that of Adolf Hitler.

This absolutely ludicrous assertion would, in a sane world, not receive a minute's credibility. Yet, it has been popping up over and over again in the wingnuttosphere, and apparently there is a pool of lunatics willing to accept it as true.

Now, although a lot of people know quite a bit about World War II, very few seem to have much concrete information about the early years of Nazi rule. This certainly helps conservatives in spreading their lies. I thought I would take a look at what the Nazis got up to in their first six months after Hitler became Reichschancellor, to see how much they really resembled the Obama administration.

Hitler took power, not by election, as many conservatives claim, but through political manipulation, on January 30th, 1933. At that point, the Nazis had never held a majority in the legislature, the Reichstag. Almost immediately, Hitler manipulated the German government into dissolving the Reichstag and calling for new elections on March 5, 1933.

In the campaign, the Nazis received massive contributions from large industrialists, and were able to use the entire state apparatus as a campaign tool. In return for the money from the industrialists, he promised them that he would destroy independent labor unions.

As William Shirer (who was there at the time) reports, by the beginning of February, all communist meetings had been banned, and the communist press had been shut down. Social Democratic rallies were forbidden or attacked by S.S. thugs. Socialist newspapers were continually suspended. Even centrist leaders were beaten and threatened. Shirer counts 51 opposition leaders murdered by the Nazis during the campaign.

Hundreds of officials belonging to other parties were forced from their positions, and replaced by Nazis. Goehring, as minister of the interior for Prussia, and therefore head of the police of 60% of Germany, called for shooting down political opponents of the Nazi party. He appointed an "auxiliary" police force including 40,000 SS thugs and Steel Helmets (their close allies) to harass other political parties.

Still, the Nazis were unable to provoke the communists and the Social Democrats into the violent confrontation that they wanted, as an excuse to do away with them once and for all.

Then, on February 27, 1933, the Reichstag, the German parliament building burned down. In response to this, which Hitler of course blamed on the communists, he managed to get the senile President Hindenburg to agree to a declaration allowing Hitler to do away with German laws respecting free expression, freedom of the press, and rights of assembly, and also doing away with laws requiring government to honor privacy of all communications, or to have warrants for searches and orders for confiscation.

As horrible as this is, this decree also allowed Hitler to do something even more shocking- to take over the complete power of the states that made up Germany.

The election took place in an atmosphere of terror.Leftist parties were forbidden to campaign or circulate election material, and saw their rallies attacked by SS thugs. As many as 8,000 communist and Social Democrat leaders were detained before the election. On the other hand, all of Germany saw huge Nazi rallies, paid for by the government and industrialists.

Even with all of this, the Nazis failed in this election to achieve a majority, getting only 44% of the popular vote. The communists, despite all of the oppression, still polled 4.8 million votes, while the Social Democrats hardly dropped at all in their support.

Now came the next step. By the simple expedient of "arresting" a sufficient number of communist and Social Democratic legislators, Hitler managed to assemble a 2/3 "majority" of the Reichstag, to pass an act giving total power to Hitler- the so-called "enabling act," which bore the cynical name of "the Law for the Removing of the Distress of the People and the Reich." This granted power to Hitler to act in the place of the legislature for four years, and made the Reichstag totally powerless. It also gave him the right to enact laws that "might deviate from the constitution."

Germany under the Nazis never saw another real election.

The enabling act was passed with no one but Social Democrats voting against it (the communists were all gone.)

In one week in March, the governments of the German states were thrown out by Nazi thugs, and replaced by Nazis. On March 31, Hitler forcibly dissolved all of the state legislatures. On April 7, he appointed Nazis as the heads of every state, with the power to appoint and remove all state employees, including judges. (in January, 1934, Hitler officially transferred all powers of the states to the Reich, effectively dissolving them.)

On May 2, 1933, unions throughout Germany were destroyed, their money seized and their leaders thrown in jail. A few weeks later, Hitler eliminated the right of workers to collective bargaining. Hitler also excluded Jews from public service and all professions. On April 1, he declared a national boycott of Jewish businesses.

In June, 1933, the Nazis' biggest ally, the National party, was attacked, and went the way of all other parties, "agreeing" to "voluntarily" dissolve. Finally, on July 14, 1933, Hitler issued a proclamation making the Nazis the only political party in Germany.

Well, there you have it. This brings you up to about six months after Hitler took office- almost exactly where Obama is now. The result: no legislature, no states, no political parties, no constitution, no unions, no elections, no freedom of assembly, no freedom of the press, total warrantless police power, thousands arrested without cause, hundreds murdered by SS thugs.

Just like Obama, huh?
