Obama To Have Congress Vote on Syria Action

This is tremendously positive news, just reported in the New York Times) and I'm sure everywhere else:

"WASHINGTON — President Obama stunned the world and paused his march to war on Saturday by asking Congress to give him authorization before he launches a limited military strike against the Syrian government in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack.
In an afternoon appearance in the Rose Garden, Mr. Obama said he had decided that the United States should use force but would wait for a vote from lawmakers..."

I say this not because I believe much of the blather being slung around by Republicans about the Constitution, which they care nothing for when it stands in their way, but because this forces the reflexively anti-Obama Republicans into a corner of their own making:  Do they vote against the will of their insane core voters and give Obama the permission to use military force, or do they deny him this power, thus effectively bringing to a final end the sixty year long bogus narrative that Democrats are weak on defense and only Republicans can be trusted to use our military properly.

Thus, Obama, instead of letting Republicans paint him into an untenable corner, succeeds in painting the Republicans into the same corner.  What's more, this is probably going to force them all back to Washington, bringing to an end their now traditional five week end-of-summer anti-Democratic smearfest.  This is going to be a really interesting couple of weeks as Republicans try to reconcile their obligatory militarism with the demands of their base that they oppose Obama on everything.  It is one of the few smart moves that Obama has ever made when confronted with Republican intransigence and political exploitation.  Good for him; and now, on with the party.

Fighting the Last War

I guess we've all heard the line about bad generals fighting the last war.  I can't believe the readiness of the press, politicians on both sides of the aisle and the usual blabbermouths on TV to engage in this ludicrous behavior.

I just saw Chris Hayes, who passes for a liberal on MSNBC, interviewing Lawrence Wilkerson about the advisability of allowing Obama to take action against Iraq.  For those of you who have forgotten, Wilkerson was an aide to Colin Powell, who was instrumental in preparing Powell's utterly false presentation to the United Nations, which preceded the Bush administration's initiating one of the greatest military blunders in the history of mankind.  Wilkerson blamed all of the endless falsehoods of that speech on the CIA and military intelligence.

The truth is that any person with half a brain could have known the moment that speech was delivered, as I did when I sat watching it, that it was nothing but a pack of lies.  I remember Powell showing two aerial pictures of a factory.  He told us it was a chemical weapons plant, but offered exactly zero evidence that it was.  What is more, it looked like any light industrial building anywhere in the world.  For all the evidence he provided, it could have been in Bayonne, New Jersey.  In the first picture, you could see a couple of trucks with semitrailers outside the factory.  In the second picture they were gone.  Powell claimed that these trucks had been loaded with chemical or biological weapons and then driven away.  He never provided a shred of evidence to support that claim.  Then, Powell produced a cartoon image showing the alleged interior of a biological weapons truck.  Here it is:

Powell made a case for a war that killed half a million innocent civilians, based on two meaningless aerial photos and a cartoon.  Powell and Wilkerson were not deceived by the CIA and the military, they concocted a massive lie to promote a war crime.  And yet this is the person that even a mainstream press liberal turns to for comment on the quality of Obama's evidence.

Here is the difference between the last war and this potential one:  Bush and Cheney were ignorant, belligerent warmongers who didn't give a damn about the truth; Obama is an intelligent, well informed person who is given to careful consideration before making any move.  Yet, all over the political landscape people are using Bush and Cheney's humiliating disaster as an excuse to oppose Obama's right to make a decision about a dictator who has now killed over 130,000 of his own people, in his struggle to retain power.

I must say that I am not sure Obama should take military action either.  If we really degrade Assad's military power, we are probably turning the country over to Islamic lunatics; if we don't we are allowing the vicious actions of a despicable leader to accomplish their intended goals.  This truly is a morass, and I wish the world had not come to this point.  But whatever I think, I sure as hell am not going to oppose Obama on the grounds that Bush and Cheney were asses.

Your Laugh of the Day.

If it weren't so sick.  Here's Donald Rumsfeld:

"Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who helped sell Congress and the American people on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan under former President George W. Bush, believes the Obama administration has failed to justify any potential military intervention in Syria."

You know, the concept of "no shame" has been taken to heights by today's Republicans that the world has never seen.

A Suggestion for Barack

Well, here's the newest excuse the Republicans have come up with to push their bogus impeachment drive:  If Obama takes any action on his own in Syria, without begging Congress for approval, he's violated the Constitution and therefore deserves to be impeached.

Fine.  Barack, go to Congress today and ask them to immediately vote to give you war powers like they did for that miserable failure George W. Bush.  Let's just see how many Republicans vote yes and how many, following their supreme program of never going along with Obama on everything, vote no.

If they refuse to give him the power to do anything, that will make it clear who really wants to try to deal with problems, and who is only interested in macho posturing and electoral politics.  And it will surely get Obama off the hook for doing nothing in Syria.

Simple enough.  I'm sure our do-nothing Republicans will be able to deal with this easily.

Wingnut Wrapup

I must admit that, for a few weeks, I've just been so sickened by the slime dumped on the country by the right, that I've kept away from the wingnuts.  Well, I took a look today, and they seem to be back to their usual idiotic, furious form, so here we go:

Heather Ginsburg, Town Hall:  "Jindal Takes Down 'Radical Left' in Latest Keystone Speech"

The radical left- something which does not really exist in the United States, unless you can find a few million committed Stalinists hiding away somewhere.  Or unless you consider centrist, business-friendly Democrats like Obama the radical left.  In which case, right wing guys, yeah, you're taking them down, but only in the sense that you are taking the whole country down with you.

By the way, Bobby Jindal... one more ignorant Republican moron, who passes for an intellectual, because it's all they've got.

Town Hall:  "Gun Rights Supporters Hold Open-Carry Rally"

Big deal.  I mean really, big fucking deal.

Mike Shedlock, Town Hall:  "Prepare for War as Pentagon Refines Syria Response...Preparing a wide range of military options and sending forces to the area is hardly encouraging. So mentally prepare for the US to engage in another senseless, unwinnable war, that we cannot afford in the first place."

You've forgotten, Mike that we have our guy in the White House, not yours.  Our guys don't get into senseless, unwinnable wars.  You wish they would so you could run around claiming that Dems and Republicans are the same, but they're not.  So go back to sleep and leave the adults alone.

Daniel J. Mitchell, Red State:  "Tax Migration and Federalism Mean Doom for Left-Wing States such as New York, California, and Illinois"

Doom.  DOOM, I tell you.  They've been predicting this for decades now, and no signs yet that the doom is approaching.  Oh yeah, the greed States (i.e. States filled with Republican) have stolen a lot of jobs from the other States.  And as long as they keep breeding stupid people who will work for starvation wages, they probably will continue doing so.  Luckily, the Smart States (that's us) keep driving the real engines of the economy, so we probably will be forced to go on supporting the Republican States with our tax dollars, like the shiftless welfare queens they are.

Doug Giles, Town Hall:  "Dear Black Thugs: You’re Making It Hard For White Devils to Believe You’re Innocent Children"

A serious comment from one of the right's most unrepentant pigs.  Racist?  DON'T YOU DARE CALL HIM RACIST just for pointing out that all black people are thugs.  YOU'RE the racist, Mr. liberal!  So there!

Kevin Glass, Town Hall:  ""One Very Bad Idea": President Obama's Student Loan Proposal"

One very bad idea:  making it possible for kids to get an education.  A bad idea for Republicans, anyway.

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Why Are We Treating the Muslim Brotherhood Like The Victim in Egypt?"

We are?  Who knew?

John Hayward, Red State:  "What passes for “leadership” in the modern “civil-rights” community has frequently compared the shooting of Trayvon Martin to the brutal murder of black teenager Emmett Till in the 1950s.  One of the people who did this is billionaire Oprah Winfrey, fresh from nearly destroying the life of an innocent Swiss shop clerk by falsely accusing her of racism"

Not much to say about this one, except that things like this show how out of issues wingnuts are these days.  Poor guys- one resource I thought the world had an infinite supply of was lies.

Bob Owens:  "NY thug tried to murder rival gang members, missed with every shot, got stomped to death for his trouble."

So what?  By the way, it didn't take a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun; it only took some other bad guys with boots.

Chris Queen, PJ Media:  "The End of Restaurant Tipping?"

Hey, a new way to screw the poor.  That's using your heads, guys.

David Swindle, PJ Media:  "Michael Walsh Names the Founder of the Criminal Organization Destroying America for Two Centuries…"

Why who else?  The Democratic party, of course!  Just ignore the fact that the Republican party at this point is a corrupt political conspiracy which is destroying the country, and pretend that it's actually Thomas Jefferson and FDR who are the crooks.

J. Christian Adams, PJ Media:  "Christians Murdered All Over Egypt, New Puppy at White House"

Obama has no right to a puppy when something bad is happening somewhere.

Michael Walsh, PJ Media:  "It only took the GOP 80 years to discover what a little backbone and a few functioning teeth can do."

Yeah, in Republicans' hands they can destroy the country.  Aren't you proud of yourselves?

Mara Zebest, Gateway Pundit:  "DHS Racist Employee With War Against Whites Website Calls Obama a ‘Mulatto F**got’

Horrible! Of course it's fine when you guys say the same thing and worse every day of the year.  At least this guy left out the Communist Muslim terrorist minion of Satan part.

Larry Klayman, Renew America:  "Finally, there is good news in the Middle East. The Egyptian military, having removed the Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi after he and his terrorist group hijacked the democratic process, is now in the act of systematically destroying this Islamic cancer on the Arab state's secular body politic. But the good news for Egypt and by extension Israel, its Jewish neighbor, is bad news for Barack Hussein Obama, our so-called "Muslim president."

In a statement issued yesterday from the stronghold of the left, Martha's Vineyard, where the "mullah in chief" is vacationing on our dime, Obama bellowed, "The United States strongly condemns the steps taken by the Egyptian interim government and security forces."

"Mullah in Chief"..."our so-called "Muslim President"... called by whom, Larry?  Congenital right wing liars like you?  Man, that carries a lot of weight.

Jake Jacobs, Renew America:  "Can constitutional conservatives be consistent within their righteous cause?"

Righteous cause?  Are you kidding me?

Alan Caruba, Renew America:  "I am tired of being called a white racist"

Stop being one, you vicious jerk.  Needless to say, Alan's whole column, except for his whining about being called a racist, is devoted to attacking black people.

Jeffrey T. Kuhner, Washington Times:  "Who betrayed Navy SEAL Team 6?  Congress must discover how they were marked for death...Republicans must get to the bottom of this burgeoning scandal. Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Rep. Darrell E. Issa of California have now launched an official probe into the deaths of the SEALs."

Get ready for it, folks.  The Benghazi "scandal" turned out to be nothing but Republican lies and smears, so now they are moving on to another gigantic smear:  the notion that Obama is somehow responsible for the deaths of members of Seal Team 6.  And of course, Darrell Issa is leading the pack.  God in heaven above, it will never stop.

World Net Daily:  "'Mystical': Pope says 'God told me' to quit "

Right ahead of the posse.

Jack Cashill, American Thinker:  "How Responsible Is Obama for the Oklahoma Killing?"

Totally.  What else did you expect a right winger to say?

Taleeb Starkes:  "If G.W. Bush Had a Son, He'd Look Like Christopher Lane"

Bush does have a son, and he doesn't look anything like Christopher Lane.  I guess you forgot about that, Taleeb.

Newsmax:  "Dick Cheney Defends NSA"

A defense of the NSA.  From the guy who brought us torture.  How comforting.

Well, wasn't that fun?  Enough for today- see you soon.

Impeachment-The Madness Grows

As readers of Green Eagle may remember, I have been confidently predicting since the election of Obama that the Republicans would do whatever they could to impeach him and kick him out of office.  This malicious phenomenon seems to be catching people by surprise, even though it should have been obvious that, after Republicans impeached Bill Clinton without cause, in the greatest abuse of Congressional power in our history, and paid no price at all for their criminality, they would soon enough decide that it was their right to destroy any Democratic President, without any grounds except their insistence that it is their right to run the country regardless of the will of the American people.

Well, the pot is well and truly boiling now.  Here are some excerpts from a New York Times article today, summing up some of what is going on among people who claim to be legitimate leaders:

"WASHINGTON — Representative Kerry Bentivolio, a freshman Republican from Michigan, has a legislative dream....Mr. Bentivolio told constituents, it is to put in motion the impeachment of President Obama. “If I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true,” he said this month."

Mr. Bentivolio says that he has hired some legal advisers to find grounds for the impeachment, thus admitting that he doesn't have any.  But that's okay with him, and with many of his colleagues:

"And last week, Senator Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican who has called himself a friend of the president, told constituents that the nation was “perilously close” to an impeachment situation...According to news reports, Mr. Coburn said at a town-hall-style meeting: “What you have to do is you have to establish the criteria that would qualify for proceedings against the president. And that’s called impeachment.”

A prominent Senator is calling for impeachment, at the same time admitting that he doesn't have a shred of evidence to support it.  And no one in the mainstream media seems to have the guts to point out what a vicious misuse of his office this is.

"Senator Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas, lamented to one voter who asked about the prospect of impeachment that the Senate, controlled by Democrats, would probably not yield the needed votes for conviction"

The only thing standing in the way of impeachment is the votes.  Justification for impeachment is irrelevant, if Republicans have the votes.  Of course, if Republicans somehow take back the Senate, the Republicans, who denied that Obama got any mandate for anything when he was reelected, will claim that they now have an electoral mandate to remove Obama.

"The lawmakers have not laid out any specific charges of high crimes and misdemeanors against Mr. Obama, though the health care law and I.R.S. scrutiny of applications by conservative groups for nonprofit status seem to be among the motivating factors."

One thing which is perfectly legal- passed by Congress and approved by the Supreme Court, the way the government is supposed to function- and one thing which is a long-disproved Republican lie.

I could go on with more examples of Congressional Republicans attempting to build momentum for this abominable act, but let's move on.

Here are a couple of pertinent comments by others, restating things which I have said for some time.  First from Salon:

"But (a) thing all these answers appear to have in common is actually even more astonishing and irresponsible: None of these politicians seem to feel any need to actually discuss the grounds for impeachment. At best there’s some hand-waving around the minor scandals of the last year, but for the most part it’s just assumed that impeachment is what Republicans normally do to Democratic presidents, just because."

Just because they can, and because they have given themselves over to the rule of force (by their side only, of course,) where anything they can get away with is justified.  And from Crooks and Liars, a two sentence summation of this whole disgusting mess:

"We have well and truly crossed the Rubicon into an era where Republicans think that disagreeing with their policies is an impeachable offense. Or maybe they just don't care about laws."

There is a good name for a phenomenon like this and the government which it would produce:  Fascist dictatorship.  Is there anyone who will deny that a government where disagreeing with those who wield power is a high crime, where laws mean nothing to those in control, deserves any other name?

Impeachment was inevitable since the day a Democrat took office, particularly following a spectacularly incompetent Republican Presidency that crashed the economy, committed armed aggression against an innocent country and made torture synonymous with our country.  What else could they do but try to make a thoroughly competent and decent (if rather reactionary) Democratic President look just as bad in retrospect?  After all, the narrative they are trying to build is that every Democratic President is an anti-American criminal who needs to be flung from office, so we might as well go with the likes of Reagan, Bush and Romney, no matter how much damage they do to us.

The only question, at this point, is "why now?"  And here is my answer:  Republicans always have a strategy for winning and for losing.  Winning, for the Republicans would be to take back the Senate in a year, at which point, they could complete their exercise by removing an American President for no reason except their own hatred and hunger for power.  Losing would be having the House revert to Democratic control in 2014, at which point they would lose the ability to carry out their sick plans.  Either way, if they are really intent on impeachment, they must act before the 2014 election.

Of course, the impeachment of Clinton was carried out by a lame-duck Republican house after an election in which they had lost control, but before the new legislative session could begin.  But trying that twice might just be too much even for the ignorant, complaisant American voters.  So here we go.  Pay your money and take your seat- the roller coaster is about to take off.

Goodbye Little Bird

I am sorry to report that we took Pico, our parrot, who has appeared at the top of this blog since it started, to a store called The Perfect Parrot in North Hollywood to be groomed, and while grooming him they killed him.

He was a very sweet and friendly bird.  We had him for many years and loved him dearly.  I don't think I have the heart to start over again with another bird.

What....

Green Eagle can't resist:

Sovereign Citizens At It Again

Readers of Green Eagle may remember that I like to keep an eye on the Sovereign Citizen movement, which lies somewhere between the teabaggers and Aryan supremacists on the political spectrum.  These jackasses have been responsible for a significant part of the right wing violence in this country, and here they are, up to their old tricks.  At least this time they got caught before killing any police or judges:

"LAS VEGAS (AP) — A sting operation stopped a plot to abduct, torture and kill police officers to bring attention to the antiauthority sovereign citizen movement, Las Vegas police said Thursday.

David Allen Brutsche and Devon Campbell Newman were arrested at an apartment a few miles off the Vegas Strip before they could carry out a plan to snatch officers, “put them on trial” and execute them in a vacant house, Las Vegas police Lt. James Seebock said.

..They found a vacant house and rigged it with bolts drilled into wall supports, creating a makeshift jail where they planned to bind captive officers to cross beams for interrogation, police said.

“We need to arrest the police and take them to our jail and put them in a cell and put them on trial in a people’s court,” Brutsche said on July 9, according to the arrest report. “If we run into the position that they resist, then we need to kill them.”

...Police said that when Brutsche was arrested, he denied that police had authority to hold him."

Here's a photo of Brutschke:

Luckily for the rest of us, the greed and hatred of the Sovereign Citizens is in general matched by their own stupidity (no one with half a brain could buy into their harangues about how the United States doesn't really exist, so they don't have to pay taxes) so they got caught this time before they had a chance to "interrogate" anyone.  Well, there's always next time, and with the likes of Ted Cruz and other Republican leaders openly encouraging them, we haven't seen the last of their malignant behavior.  You can count on that.

Scalia Is A Vicious, Traitorous Liar

Here's a story from the Daily Beast about a speech given recently by Antonin Scalia, which of course they carefully refrain from describing the clear meaning of what Scalia is saying:

"America has more than its fair share of extremists who believe people need to stock up on guns to fight against tyrannical government in Washington.Add one more to the list: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. In a speech in Montana on Monday, the jurist was asked about the Second Amendment and what arms were protected by that provision of the Constitution. That “remains to be determined,” he replied. As one example, he asked if people have a right to “bear shoulder-fired rocket launchers?” Perhaps they do, Scalia suggested. The answer would turn on the historical understanding of the Framers, who Scalia said included the Second Amendment in part to preserve the right of people to revolt against a tyrannical leader."

The authors of this piece correctly point out that the view that the second amendment exists to protect the right of armed revolt against the country is, as I have pointed out on several occasions, completely false.  A cursory reading of the relevant sections of the Federalist papers will disabuse anyone of that notion.

What is also clear, and here we enter into ground that mainstream reporters fear to tread, is that Antonin Scalia knows this perfectly well.  Scalia has demonstrated that his respect for the intent of the founding fathers, the principle on which he has built his public persona, is a total lie.  Of course, no one could doubt this after things like the Bush V. Gore decision, or the Citizens United travesty, but here it is again.  The truth is that Scalia is nothing but a common criminal, put on the Supreme Court in an extreme act of cynicism, to do the bidding of the very wealthy.  He believes in nothing, and has not a shred of moral compass; he is willing to destroy everything that the founding fathers believed in, if it enriches his masters.

Of course, no one with a real voice dares point this out.  So, instead of removing him from the court and imprisoning him for his corruption, we let him continue his job of wrecking the country, and (as with miserable clowns like Paul Ryan) we pretend he is a great "conservative intellectual."  Such a thing does not exist and can never exist; all conservatives are either con men or suckers.  Scalia is one of the former.

It's Hopeless

The United States has driven off a cliff, and there is no coming back.  The Republican party has now generated such a population of proudly ignorant jerks that they are about to overwhelm us all.  Today's proof?  A survey of Louisiana Republicans reveals that more blame Obama for the poor response to Hurricane Katrina than blame Bush.

The following picture has nothing to do with this fact, but what difference does it make anyway?
God, we live in a stupid country.

A Grand Opportunity for Boy Scouts Who Hate Gays

This very exciting news from Media Matters:

"Fox News host Mike Huckabee will be the keynote speaker at the Inaugural National Leadership Convention for On My Honor's Youth Adventure Program, an anti-gay program formed in response to the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) new membership policy permitting openly gay scouts."

Actually, I think there already was an organization along those lines.  Here's a picture of it:

School Grades- Even Lefties Still Don't Get It

Here's an article from Daily Kos about the relationship between school grades and family income, which focuses on a very legitimate problem, but still doesn't get what is going on.  I don't want to focus blame on Daily Kos, because this response is in agreement with the virtually unanimous opinion you hear from the left:

"No matter how many times people who actually know stuff about education patiently explain to corporate education policy boosters that poverty is the big factor in student outcomes, they wave it off as irrelevant...So let's just grade their schools and teachers like it's within a teacher's power to overcome all that inequality!

Yeah, about that. The Miami Herald has dug into the data on school grades:

Of the 209 schools in Miami-Dade and Broward with at least 90 percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch, 78 percent received a grade of C or worse. Roughly 39 percent of these high-poverty schools received a D or F.

Of the 43 local schools with much lower poverty rates (30 percent or fewer students receiving free or reduced lunch), 86 percent received an A, and none received a D or F.

...So teachers in low-income schools are basically punished for being teachers in low-income schools, trying to educate the kids who need help the most."

What is the mistake in this reasoning?  After decades of utter treachery from the Republicans, people are still willing to write this off as an unintended consequence of well-meaning legislation.  That is nonsense.  We should know by now that every action taken by the Republican party is intended for one purpose- to transfer wealth to the rich from all the rest of us.  The No Child Left Behind act, vouchers, every other thing they have advocated as remedies for our schools, has but a single purpose: to provide a justification for transferring money from schools for the poor to schools for the rich.  The inevitable fact that kids with wealthy parents are going to do better in school than kids from poor backgrounds is not taken as a motivation to provide a better education for poor kids- no, the Republican lesson is exactly the opposite- poor kids need to be given a worse education by having their schools' funding cut.  Because, Republicans don't give a damn about anyone but themselves and the rich, greedy vultures who pay to keep them in office.  And because even on the left, lifetimes of being propagandized into buying into the wonderfulness of our "democracy" leaves people unable to accept the degree of treachery that is acceptable on the right.

Can I Just Ask a Simple Question?

What would have been the world's reaction if Israeli police and military had killed 635 Islamic protesters in one day?

God and Warming

I'm trying to get back to blogging here after a couple of tough weeks starting work on a new show.  The producers never give us enough prep time any more, so we are always in a panic the first few weeks.  Oh well, here's a wonderful quote from the head of the Republican party, Rush Limbaugh:

"See, in my humble opinion, folks, if you believe in God, then intellectually you cannot believe in manmade global warming … You must be either agnostic or atheistic to believe that man controls something that he can’t create."

Well in the first place, do you have to be agnostic or atheist to believe that "man controls something that he can't create?"   How about a car?  I can't create a car, but I can control one.  I can't create a Stratocaster, but I can control it (well, sort of.)  Anyway, enough with this jackass comment.  The rest of Limbaugh's statement is just as much a pack of nonsense, starting with the idea that Limbaugh actually believes that his opinion is "humble."  And the notion that Rush Limbaugh is qualified to pontificate on what believing in God implies is utter nonsense.

Unfortunately, tens of millions of Americans seem to be ready to swallow that corporate generated nonsense.  Otherwise there would be no Republican party and we could all get back to leading decent lives.

They're Panicking Big Time

This is a nice story:

"Aug 12 (Reuters) - Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Monday called on the Obama administration to delay the Oct. 1 opening of exchanges where uninsured Americans will be able to buy health insurance until the U.S. government can guarantee the protection of people's personal data.
The exchanges, a key element of the president's signature 2010 healthcare law dubbed "Obamacare," will be largely online.

In a letter to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the agency taking the lead in implementing the law, McConnell said that "Americans should not be forced into the exchanges, and certainly not without these assurances" that personal and financial data will be safe from "hackers and cyber criminals."

The Republicans are in a total panic about Obamacare's taking effect.  They are now months away from the time when the American people find out what it will really do for them, and they are clutching at any straw to try to convince themselves that they have a chance to derail it.

Well, they don't have a chance, but they still have lots of money from the Koch brothers etc, and they will keep spending it to spread their lies.

No matter.  A few months from now, Obamacare will start pounding a great bloody stake into their hearts.  That will be fun to watch.

Rick Santorum is an Ugly, Hateful Scum

He certainly is when he has things like this to say:

"Don't use the term the other side uses. Who does Barack Obama talk about all the time? The middle class. Since when in America do we have classes? Since when in America are people stuck in areas or defined places called a class? That’s Marxism talk."

Even mentioning the middle class makes you a Marxist.  Right wingers like Santorum have licensed themselves to tell the most disgusting lies, and launch the most contemptible smears against anyone who stands in the way of the rich having everything in this country.  And they call themselves religious, moral people.

Well, that's a lie too.

A Short Comment About Detroit

I am sick of the utter garbage which Republicans (and others) are slinging regarding the supposed causes of the bankruptcy of the city of Detroit.  It's all the fault of the unions, it's the fault of Democratic city officials, it's the fault of (who else) the poor black people left behind when the whites moved to the suburbs, on and on.

Well let me keep my promise and make this short:  The reason the city of Detroit is bankrupt is known to everyone.  It is that the car companies on which this city was built decided that they could make more money by building cars somewhere else- the South, Mexico, China, anywhere that workers were beaten down enough to work for almost nothing.  That's it.  That's the whole story and as I said, we all know it perfectly well.  The greed of the managerial class destroyed the lives of everyone else.  It's the story of the United States the last half century or so, just more extreme.  And it infuriates me to have people who know better pretending that there is any other answer.

Deficit Truths And Lies

Or, the falsehood that wouldn't die.  The latest eruption of this patently phony nonsense, from Senator Rand Paul:

"You know, the thing is, people want to say it’s extreme. But what I would say is extreme is a trillion-dollar deficit every year. I mean, that's an extremely bad situation."

And we've all heard the constant insistence from the Republicans that Obama exploded the deficit, and that it continues to grow- a claim swallowed whole by much of the mainstream press.

Well, time out for a little truth.  Here's a nice, readily available chart of the recent history of the Federal deficit:

I added the grey bars to allow you to see what happened to the budget deficit under Republican and Democratic Presidents, going back to Jimmy Carter, whose fiscal mismanagement (according to Republicans) left the Federal government with a deficit (get ready for the shock) of $59.6 billion.

As you can see, every Republican administration in the last 35 years has left office with a greatly higher budget deficit, and every Democratic administration has done exactly the opposite.  Despite this truth, the press of course continues to collaborate with Republicans to spread the patent falsehood that it is Democrats that are the spendthrifts.  And thus the American public continues to place its trust in the very people that pose the greatest threat to our public well-being.  So, the struggle between flawed but essentially decent people, and those who are not, continues as it has throughout the whole history of mankind.

Aren't We Glad We Don't Live in a Lawless Place Like Mexico?

This news, from Mexico, from today's Los Angeles Times:

"In Mexico, are some above the law?

MEXICO CITY — They were two of Mexico's most flamboyant bad boys, symbols for many here of all that was wrong with this country in the 1980s and '90s.

Rafael Caro Quintero was a high-rolling drug lord sent to prison for the 1985 kidnapping, torture and slaying of an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Raul Salinas, the brother of a former Mexican president, was a free-spending playboy. He was convicted, and then acquitted, of the 1994 killing of a top politician. He was also suspected of stealing millions of dollars from the government.

But in recent days, the old criminal cases against these two characters have fallen apart, leaving many dismayed by what they perceive as the enduring dysfunction of the Mexican justice system.

Even though Mexican officials, with U.S. advisors and millions of dollars of U.S. aid, have focused in recent years on reforming the system, these two cases are likely to bolster the suspicion that the law still does not apply to the well-connected and the powerful — either because of their enduring influence, or the incompetence of those who pursue them."

The shame!  They were rich and powerful.  They were sent to prison and then have apparently squirmed out from under their convictions.

How wonderful that we live in the world's greatest bastion of justice, the United States of America, where a rich person is free to destroy the lives of thousands or even millions, without the slightest worry about being held responsible for his behavior!  Here, our government, ever mindful of demands that it not waste the taxpayer's money, would not even think of prosecuting rich criminals.  No sense wasting money on a lost cause, and besides, the American people seem to be just fine with criminal behavior by the rich, so what's the point?

But, hooray for the Los Angeles Times for pointing out how terrible it is when a rich person violates the law somewhere else.

Sorry For The Light Posting

Green Eagle actually has a job.  I've just started on a new TV show, and as usual, it's crazy at the beginning.  Luckily, politics has been very boring lately, so I don't have much to say.  I'll be back soon enough.

Wingnut Wrapup

Man, this gets annoying after a while.  Well, while we wait for Republicans to trot out their brand new rebranding- Libertarian Populism, which is all the buzz on the right these days, and which is intended to convince the rubes that it is actually the Democrats who are on the side of rich people- here's some more random idiocy from the right:

Jim "Dim Bulb" Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "UNLIT CHOPPERS IN CHICAGO SKY"

And here's the picture Jim uses to illustrate this fact:

Jim, I hate to point this out to you, but your picture was taken during the day.  Maybe that's why the helicopters were unlit.  Idiot.

Jim continues:

"The new normal is to think Hollywood is filming the next big budget, high action, urban assault movie over your home."

It is, Jim?  Not where I come from.  We never see "Hollywood" filming the next urban assault movie over our houses.  Of course, maybe that's because we don't live where things like that happen.  We live in Hollywood.

Michael Barone, Town Hall:  "Michael Barone:  "Why are so many people so desperate to hold onto the idea that America is as racist as it has ever been?"

Because it is, jerk.  And every time you deny what is obvious to anyone, you just prove it a little more.

David Spady, Town Hall:  "All Aboard for the Obamacare Train Wreck"

Keep telling yourself that, sucker.  How do you think people in red States are going to feel when they have no health care, and they find out that people in blue States are getting health insurance for a couple hundred dollars a month, preexisting conditions covered?  So, whoop it up until January, when your idiotic followers will be yelling "keep your government hands off my Obamacare."

Cortney O'Brien, Town Hall:  "Awesome: Hundreds of Women Protest HHS Mandate In Front of White House"

Well, dozens anyway.  Bused in by the Catholic Church.  How impressive.

David Harsanyi, Town Hall:  "What Conservatives Can Learn From the Pope"

I'll tell you what Conservatives can learn from the Pope.  In fact, I'll tell you what they can learn from the last two Popes:  People really like nice people who care about human suffering and they really hate right wing jerks who only care about themselves and their money.  Of course, that's not what Conservatives will learn from the Pope.  Fat chance of that.  Here's what David took away from the Pope's recent conduct:

"The pope, it is widely reported, has "recast the Catholic Church's image" by focusing on its "inviting, merciful aspects"

Unfortunately, David seems to have forgotten that American Conservatism doesn't have any inviting, merciful aspects.  So, they're right back where they started from- acting like monsters and lying their asses off about it.

Daniel Horowitz, Red State:  "How do you take a state Romney carried by 23 points with 116 of 120 counties and turn it into a dead heat?"

Maybe by not having a billion dollars in corporate money to finance your propaganda.

Paula Bolyard, PJ Media:  "What Would Dietrich Bonhoeffer Say to Anthony Weiner?"

Who the fuck cares?

And now, the kind of madness that we can only get from Jim "Dim Bulb" Hoft, the dumbest man on the internet:  "BREAKING>>>  Obama WH Is Hiding Benghazi Survivors AND CHANGING THEIR NAMES"

Right.  He is hiding the Benghazi survivors, maybe in FEMA concentration camps.  And when did this happen?

"This came after Jake Tapper at CNN broke the news that there were “dozens” of CIA operatives on the ground in Benghazi on 9-11 when the consulate came under attack and the agency is."

Well, shut my mouth!  The CIA is  "going to great lengths to make sure whatever it was doing, remains a secret."  And that never happened before- the CIA usually puts everything it does on national TV.  How dare the CIA keep what it's doing a secret?  That treacherous Obama must be behind it; who else could be so evil?

Sher Zieve, Renew America:  "Living under tyranny and the solidification of the Obama dictatorship--Part I"

Oh God, Sher, give it up already and go home.

Betsey McCaughey, Renew America:  "Defunding: the Framers’ remedy for presidential lawlessness"

One the framers never used, or at least Betsey couldn't find a single example of it.  But since when did we expect the truth from the likes of Betsey?

Washington Times:  "Sarah Palin: McCain campaign 'elitists' banned me from telling the truth"

I don't know why they bothered.  Sarah Palin isn't capable of telling the truth.

Heather Ginsburg, Town Hall:  "Louisiana Looks to Reinvent High School with Help from the Private Sector"

Reinvent.  Heh.  That's like saying, "U.S. looks to reinvent World Trade Center with help from Al Qaida."

James Lewis, American Thinker:  "Obama is trapped in Syria...Obama meddling has endangered the 30-year peace in the Middle East."

30-year peace in the Middle East...Except for Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Sudan, Libya, Yemen, Pakistan, and oh yeah, Iraq and Afghanistan.  And a couple more that I'm sure I missed.  What kind of fantasy world do these people live in?

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "House votes to block IRS enforcement of Obamacare...GOP sticks it to the IRS"

In the Republican world where the House controls everything and the President and the Senate don't exist.  This is (I think- who can really tell?) their 40th vote to stop Obamacare.  And this one will "stick it" to the bill just like the other 39.  So, knock yourselves out, guys.  I'm sure you can reach 60 by Christmas if you really try.

Lloyd Marcus, Daily Caller:  "Will the real black America please stand up?"

No, Lloyd, because if they do, one of your right wing white buddies will shoot them.

And now, the wingnut Projection of the day:

John Ransom, Town Hall:  "Why do liberals think that the patina of moral superiority entitles them to act inferior in every other way? "

God in heaven above, look in the mirror once in a while, guy.

Doug Giles, Town Hall:  "ATTENTION AL SHARPTON: Black Dude in White Hoodie Viciously Stabs White Teenage Girl"

OH MY GOD!  A black guy committed a CRIME!!!!  It's open season on those sons of bitches now, right?

Funny thing, this girl was named Natasha Martinez.  In the wingnut world, a guy named Zimmerman is a Hispanic, but someone named Martinez is white.

Taylor Colwell, Town Hall:  "Unbelievable: Charlie Rangel Calls Tea Partiers "White Crackers"

To Republicans, it's always unbelievable when someone tells the truth.

P. David Hornick, PJ Media:  "How I Became a Conservative"

If this story doesn't involve someone shooting a nail gun into your skull, I don't believe a word of it.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Whoa!… Wildly Popular Anti-Obama Belly Dance Video Takes Egypt By Storm"

Wow! Jim says it has 160,000 hits!  That's just so amazing!  Almost as amazing as this:

Now, there's a real example of what the internet was invented to do.

Star Parker, World Net Daily:  "Republicans, how 'bout some moral leadership?"

Don't make me laugh.

Michael Bargo Jr, American Thinker:  "How Democrats use Federal Agencies to Influence Politics"

Let me try to explain how this works:  Federal agencies enforce laws like the Civil Rights act, the Social Security act, and Medicare, which were passed by Democrats.  Then, people's lives get better.  So, next time around they vote for Democrats.  What a treasonous conspiracy!

Just What I've Been Saying

Paul Krugman:

"...the madness of the GOP is the central issue of our time."

Pretty much the whole story.

Republican Obstruction and the Founding Fathers

I was reading some right wing article that made reference to Federalist paper #58.  This is one that I had never read, so I went to take a look at it.  I need hardly state that the content of this Federalist paper, written by James Madison, had absolutely nothing to do with the irrational point that the writer was trying to make.  However, at the end of Madison's essay, there was an amazing passage, which relates directly to the subversive, obstructionist behavior of the Republican party today.  Once again, they love to blab about the Constitution, without taking a moment to find out what it means.  Well, here is Madison.  I think you will find this interesting:
'It has been said that more than a majority ought to have been required for a quorum; and in particular cases, if not in all, more than a majority of a quorum for a decision...In all cases where justice or the general good might require new laws to be passed, or active measures to be pursued, the fundamental principle of free government would be reversed. It would be no longer the majority that would rule: the power would be transferred to the minority. Were the defensive privilege limited to particular cases, an interested minority might take advantage of it to screen themselves from equitable sacrifices to the general weal, or, in particular emergencies, to extort unreasonable indulgences."
Do I need to state the relevance of this passage to today's situation in Congress?  Through misuse of legislative privileges (most notably the filibuster in the Senate) power has been effectively transferred to the minority, and what is more, with exactly the result predicted by Madison at the founding of our republic- an "interested minority- the very rich- have indeed screened themselves from "equitable sacrifices to the general weal," and have continuously extorted "unreasonable indulgences."

Could there be a more succinct and accurate portrayal of what has gone on in this country the last decade or so, as the Republican party has transformed itself into the party of subversion?  But of course, Republicans, who constantly manufacture opinions to put into the mouths of the founding fathers, have no interest in what the founding fathers, with considerable wisdom, foresaw.  All the Republican talk about "original intent" is, like most of what they have to say, nothing but noise intended to shout down reasonable and informed opinion, in their unstoppable zeal to extort "unreasonable indulgences" for the rich criminals who pay to keep them in office.

That's mainly what I have to say about this, but I can't let Madison go without reprinting what he says next:
"Lastly, it would facilitate and foster the baneful practice of secessions...a practice subversive of all the principles of order and regular government; a practice which leads more directly to public convulsions, and the ruin of popular governments, than any other which has yet been displayed among us."
Once again, Madison proves prescient.  We have seen, the last few years, continuous threats by Republicans to secede, so confident are they in their divine right to rule the country, regardless of the outcome of elections.  As they dwindle more and more into a minor segment of the American people, and as their anger at their marginalization (which need never have happened, if they had not claimed superior rights for themselves all along) grows, their toying with the essential fabric of our country may very well bring about the "ruin of popular government," completing the job of wrecking the nation in the name of patriotism that they began in 1860.

Republican Subversion of Government Continues

The open sedition that is all the Republican party has to offer any more continues.  And in the process, the Republicans in the Senate are giving us one more lesson in what a pathetic sap Harry Reid is.

When the momentum for filibuster reform was behind him, Reid traded it away for a promise from the Republicans to act responsibly in the future. This, despite the Republicans' long record of extracting concessions in return for promises that are never kept. As I pointed out at the time, despite the Democrats' crowing about what a great victory they had won, in fact they had given up the chance to permanently block the un-American refusal of Republicans to do their duty, in return for three or four nominations being approved.

Well, here we are, right where any sentient political observer knew we would be:

"All signs are pointing to a total filibuster by Republicans of President Obama's three nominees—Patricia Millett, Nina Pillard, Robert Wilkins—to the critical Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, the influential court responsible for setting precedent in cases involving federal agency actions. It's second only to the Supreme Court in import for decisions.

This is the court that Republicans have deemed too inconsequential to deserve a full complement of 11 judges, speciously arguing that the court just isn't busy enough that the three current vacancies there need to be filled.

“It’s way overstaffed,” Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), (a) Judiciary Committee member, told TPM on Thursday. “It does not need these judges, and we don’t have the money.”

We don't have the money to fund the nation's preeminent appeals court.  We have the money to subsidize the oil industry and agribusiness, to bail out Wall Street, to conduct futile foreign wars, but we don't have enough money to pay for three judges.  This argument is not even laughable- it is spitting in the face of decent human beings.

Now, let me say what this battle is really about.  This court, which hears most of the important and wide-reaching Federal cases, has, thanks to Republican pressure, for years been heavily tilted toward Conservative (i.e. corrupt) judges who take every opportunity to rule in favor of corporations and the rich.  Now, due to retirements, the court is split 4-4, with three vacancies.  The Republicans will do anything to prevent the court returning to a reasonable political balance.  So, their goal is to prevent any Democratic President from appointing any judge to this court.  Then some (perhaps imaginary, the way they are going) future Republican President can appoint three more right wing tools to the court, insuring that the control of the country by the rich is not broken.

Against this ugly agenda, Harry Reid has nothing to offer but unkept promises to do something meaningful, and a shameful record of letting the bad guys have their way.  How can we expect things to be any different this time?

And thus, the rule of the bullies and thugs, the corrupt and criminal, will continue unabated.
