Reality Versus The Republicans

Here are a couple of stories, complete with graphs, detailing what we lefties foolishly value as actually being, you know, "true."  They run against what we are told every day by Republicans and the miserable excuse we have for a mainstream press, so I guess I shouldn't be mentioning them, but I never studied journalism, so apparently I haven't yet figured out that it's not about "truth," whatever that is.

First, we learn this surprising fact (surprising if you only listen to our nation's "serious voices") from Daily Kos:

"U.S. has been doing austerity, and it's been hurting, not helping"

Hurting, just like everywhere else in the world that it's been tried.  Here's a comparison of government hiring during the current recession, with hiring during every other recession in recent times:

You know that the vast majority of American have been conned by the media into believing that Obama does nothing but expand government.  But here's the truth- the pathetic pace of this recovery is directly related to forced government job losses. As we've seen around the world, "austerity," i.e. allowing rich investors to plunder the nation's wealth and then making everyone else pay the price, causes nothing but disaster.  But it's still being shoved down our throats, paid for with billions in corporate propaganda.

Now, another fact that will surprise most people:

"Contrary To GOP Rhetoric, Low-Tax States Have Worse Economic Growth...a new report from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy shows that so-called “high tax states” are actually experiencing more growth and less decline in income than states that are supposedly super-conducive to economic expansion:

"In reality, states that levy personal income taxes, including the states with the highest top rates, have seen more economic growth per capita and less decline in their median income level over the last ten years than the nine states that do not tax income. Unemployment rates have been nearly identical across states with and without income taxes."

And a little graph to show that:

Again, completely contradictory to what we are told over and over again, and to what we will continue to be told, regardless of the facts.

And how are Republicans working around the country to deal with this reality?  Here are three stories from today's news, showing their diligence and dedication.  First, from Arizona:

"Arizona Senate Approves Gold, Silver As Legal Tender...Arizona's Republican-controlled Senate passed a bill on Wednesday to make gold and silver legal tender in the state.

According to Capitol Media Services, Republicans who pushed the measure through said they feared the value of the dollar could tank, making the law necessary."

"In 2011, Utah became the first state to approve gold and silver coins as legal currency. States such as Montana, Missouri, Colorado, Idaho, Indiana, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Washington have considered similar measures in recent years."

Let me state the obvious:  They're not preparing for the collapse of the United States, because even they aren't stupid enough to think that will happen.  What these Republicans are doing is deliberately undermining people's faith in the Federal Government, hoping to turn them into violent, armed traitors.  Next, from Idaho:

"A Republican lawmaker in Idaho has proposed an amendment to the state Constitution that would require all adults to be militia members in an effort to preserve their right to bear arms...(State Senator Jim) Rice argued that the federal government could never take away people's guns if the Idaho Constitution was changed to make all adults members of the state militia as a "backstop."

Republican involvement in creating massive armed mobs, who see it as their duty to attack the Federal Government.  If this is not treason, i.e. preparing to wage war against the United States, I don't know what is.  Finally, this tidbit from Arkansas:

"LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Arkansas Senate voted Thursday to override a veto of a near-ban of abortions starting in the 20th week of pregnancy and backed a separate measure that would outlaw the procedures in most cases beginning in the 12th week.

The Republican-led Senate voted 19-14 along party lines to override Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe’s veto of the 20-week bill, a day after the GOP-led state House voted to override it. A simple majority was required in each chamber."

That will really help deal with our problems.

The Republican party is currently at war with America.  The war is still being fought with lies, smears and media attacks.  But they know they are losing the hearts and minds of the American people, so they are preparing as fast as they can to carry their war out with violence and subversion.  Well, this is just one more obvious truth that no one seems to want to face.

The End Game

I'd like to mention a currently popular Democratic delusion, as exemplified by this comment at Daily Kos today:

"What's whacky is the end game. The GOP is going to lose on this like they lost on the 2012 election, the fiscal cliff, Benghazi hearings, Bush tax cuts for the rich, Hagel nomination, etc...So what's their brilliant plan?"

Well, here is their "brilliant" plan:  Sure, they will take a bit of a hit over the sequestration, but they believe that will be long forgotten by the 2014 elections.  What won't be forgotten is the new recession, deliberately caused by their intransigence, which they will then spend hundreds of millions of dollars blaming on the President and Congressional Democrats.

And I hope there is no one reading this, at this point in history, that doubts that the Republicans will deliberately destroy our economy in order to take back power.

Well, that is the plan.  Hang on tight, and we'll see if it works.

Nothing to Say, Really

Well, I haven't had much to say lately, because there is nothing going on in the country that virtually everyone who reads Green Eagle doesn't understand perfectly well.  The Republicans are up to their usual tricks, which consist, among the leaders, of refusing to do a thing that doesn't unfairly benefit the very rich, and among the followers of continuing their contest to see who is the greatest jackass on earth.  Obama, as usual, can't bring himself to stand for what is really right for the country, and is just hungering to cut Social Security and Medicare, to make poor people pay for the damage done by the wealthy.

It's now reached the point where Andrew Napolitano, the resident "legal expert" at CNN, is now calling for impeaching Obama over the sequester, which only continues to exist because Republicans won't do the right thing for the country, since it doesn't benefit the rich enough.  This opens up a whole new vista in Republican stonewalling- as long as they can fraudulently maintain control over one house of Congress, they can block any vital legislation, and then impeach a Democratic President for not totally caving in to their demands.

And we know perfectly well that, if the Republicans somehow manage to steal back control of the Senate too, Obama will be impeached and removed from office, as will every Democratic President to follow him.  This is the price Democrats are going to pay for letting the Republicans impeach Bill Clinton- the worst abuse of Congressional power in the history of the United States- without a shred of consequence.  And by the way, when I say "every Democratic President to follow him,"  I am assuming that there will ever be one.  The Republicans fell asleep at the wheel in 2008 and 2012, because they couldn't believe the black man could win, but in the future, we will go back to what happened in 2000- an election stolen by the greatest act of Supreme Court corruption in the history of the country, also without consequences.

There's the Republican party today: a lawless pack of corrupt monsters, kept in power by the votes of large segments of the populace inflamed with greed and hatred, and seemingly oblivious to their own ongoing destruction.  But it just wouldn't be polite for our Democratic leaders to point out the obvious, so it will get worse and worse.  Our so-called democracy is barely functioning today; given the demographic pressures on them, the Republicans will eliminate even the pretense of that in the near future.

Memories of the Day of Resistance

What?  You don't have any memories of the Day of Resistance?  You never heard of the Day of Resistance?  That damned liberal press must have covered the whole mighty thing up.

Well, for your information, Saturday was the (need I repeat it?) Day of Resistance- the day when gun owners and supporters of the fevered right wing interpretation of the second amendment would proudly assemble around the country and display their might, just like the Tea Parties of legend, causing the evil Democrats to cower at the sight of the People Standing Tall, Guns In Hand!

So, how did it go?  Well, here are a few pictures of this earth-shaking day, from around the country:

Well, there you go.  This is what happens to the teabagging right wingers when they don't have the likes of the Koch brothers to pay for their parties and bus in the participants.  The whole country, thanks to our miserable mainstream press, spent years cowering in terror of this pathetic handful of ignorant loons, who never even realized that they were nothing but the tools of the rich.

Well, at least this time, no one seemed to have paid much attention to their pathetic tantrum.  Even the right wing websites and "news" sources that heavily promoted these events over the last month seem to be ignoring their utter failure.

This is the reality of the opposition to the Democratic positions that over 90% of the country agrees with.  And yet we are continually treated to an account of national affairs that treats them as equal to all of the rest of us, thus assuring that the "center" moves ever farther toward the territory formerly inhabited only by the most deluded of lunatics.

Lots of Sex at the Vatican

"What's coming out is a very detailed X-ray of the Roman Curia that does not spare even the closest collaborators of the pope," respected Vatican expert Ignazio Ingrao writes in Panorama. "The pope was no stranger to the intrigues, but he probably did not know that under his pontificate there was such a complex network and such intricate chains of personal interests and unmentionable relationships."

Sure, he didn't know.  If he didn't know, he wouldn't be the first Pope in seven hundred years to quit and run for cover.  In fact, let Green Eagle be the first to state the obvious:  if he wasn't involved, he wouldn't be quitting.

As we have seen, the Catholic Church is damned good at hiding the truth, so we may never have a smoking gun to prove this.  But, after what has happened in the last couple of decades, we'd be fools not to see what is right in front of our faces.

Austerity- The Nation Killer

I've seen very little in a long time that makes things as clear as these two charts, from Paul Krugman, via Brad DeLong:

Could anything make it clearer what a total disaster the soak-everyone-but-the-rich doctrine of austerity is?  These graphs are almost unbelievably linear.  And yet, Republicans in the United States, and the fool Obama too, are working every single day to shove our own form of austerity down the throats of the American people, somehow promising that the results will be entirely different.

The exact opposite of "austerity" is what this nation needs.  The rich must be made to pick up the tab for the damage they have done.  We need a lower Social Security age, and higher benefits.  We need a much higher minimum wage.  We need accelerated government spending on infrastructure, so as not to leave our children with a trashed country.  We need a real national health plan, which will drive a stake once and for all into the hearts of the health insurance vampires who are sucking us dry.  I could go on, but why bother, because it seems that we are not going to get any of those things.  What we will get is continued unconscionable breaks for capital gains earnings, massive corporate loopholes, government policies dictated by the hyper-rich, and a steep decline into the third world for the rest of us.  The people with all the money may have been pretty well crushed in the last election, but that hasn't stopped them for one second from doing their worst to suck the United States dry, and so far, they seem to be getting their way.

Wingnut Wrapup

If you read Wingnut Wrapup, you may remember me complaining a couple of times recently about the listlessness that seems to have overtaken the right.  Here's a comment  from Daily Kos' Hate-Mal-a-Palooza, on Saturday, Feb. 16, making the same point:

"I've started to worry that the wingnuts are simply too demoralized and turned off by politics to ever pick up the pace again. It's not just my hate mail, it's Fox News ratings (down to a 12-year low in January), it's the unexpected string of Republican capitulations since the election, it's the fact that House Speaker John Boehner hasn't been able to pass anything of worth with a majority of his own caucus, it's the fact that conservatives are directing their fire at each other, rather than liberals, it's all the gay marrying, the pot, the "demographic winter" (as the racists call it). Heck, even my twitter trolls are quiet of late.

Apparently, the people who used to send me hate mails are now sending them to Karl Rove and Haley Barbour instead. Or they're too depressed to find they are the fringe minority, from the White House, to the marriage equality initiatives, to the loss of so many poster boys like Richard Mourdock and Todd Akins. Whatever the reason, I can't have a hate mail feature without content."

Anyway, this certainly corresponds with my experience.  I remember when I could put together a Wingnut Wrapup every day if I could stand it.  Not that they are churning out less lies and smears, mind you; no, they are such boring and repetitive ones that I can't bring myself to bother you with them.  Well, on to their weak performance the last few days:

Leah Barkoukis, Town Hall:  "Gun Companies to Law Enforcement in Anti-Gun States: We’re Not Doing Business With You Anymore"

Well, guys, it's a free country.  Keep your guns.  Sell them only to criminals.  What do we care?

John Ransome, Town Hall:  "Asteroids, Polar Bear Cannibalism Lead to Global Warming, or, uh, Something Bad "

They aren't even trying to be coherent any more.  Just string some words together, string them together with a dose of contempt, and move on to the next lie.

David Morgan, Town Hall:  "Catholic bishops ask Congress for contraceptives reprieve"

Don't bother, guys, you can't get a teenage boy pregnant by raping him.  No matter what some Republican Senator might have told you.

Howard Nemerov, PJ Media:  " L.A. Times: Violent Movies Don’t Cause Violence, but Guns Do...Understanding the fractured mind of a gun-ban fetishist."

What kind of person would think that?  Man, those liberals are crazy, huh?  I mean, people are out there killing people with DVD's of the latest teen action movie every day.

Larry Klayman, Renew America:  "It is ironic indeed that just as one socialist dictator, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, is about to expire of terminal cancer on his deathbed in a Cuban hospital, another one, who is much more powerful, is seeking to extend his control in a Stalinist "gulag style" power grab. Unlike Chavez and his also-dying buddy, Cuban communist strongman Fidel Castro, our fraudulently elected ineligible president is not just some two-bit dictator-terrorist of a Third World country; he is the so-called leader of the free world – an oxymoron if there ever was one since the "mullah in chief's" apparent plans are to eliminate individual freedoms and instead install a "Big Brother" regime domestically and worldwide through his comrades at the United Nations and their Agenda 21... he knows that it is only a matter of a short time that his Stalinist power grab will force law-abiding, God-fearing citizens to rise up in revolution"

No, Larry, tell us what you really think:

"The black helicopters in recent weeks have been flying overhead in major American cities, such as Miami, Chicago and Houston, firing practice rounds from government-issued machine guns."

Black helicopters.  Right.  Gotcha, Larry.  And here I thought that black helicopter thing was a joke.  Apparently not, if we are to believe Larry.  Get that tinfoil back on your head, guy, before you start raving about the lizard people.

Judie Brown, Renew America:  "America's young people don't measure up to the academic standards of other nations, but when it comes to sex they are right up there in the top two or three."

Well, at least they are excelling in something, Judy.  America, yeah!

"Professor Helen Alvare, among others, echoes these sentiments when she suggests that the pro-life movement will never succeed in ending abortion if it does not first address the underlying cause of pregnancy."

I guess she skipped sex ed too, huh?  They'd have taught her what the cause of pregnancy is. It really isn't that mysterious to anyone over ten.

Paul Hsieh, PJ Media:  "Would New Gun Laws Spark Widespread Civil Disobedience?"

God, I hope they do.  Then we could treat a whole bunch of these evil, hate filled gun bastards the way Christopher Dorner was treated.  That would shut them up for a while.  Sorry to be so angry about this, but I'm sick of being threatened that if we don't do what Conservatives want, they are going to go on a rampage and start shooting people.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Obama White House Boycotts FOX News on Sunday Talk Shows — But Will Hold Direct Talks With Iran"

They know who our country's real enemies are.

Glenn Fairman, American Thinker:  "The news media have made an overt decision to avert your eyes away from the stone cold reality that young blacks are increasingly committing crimes against life and property by the medium of flash mob violence."

Maybe they're not paying attention because you just made that accusation up out of nothing, Glenn.  Will it surprise anyone that, in Glenn's entire article there is not one single statistic concerning this supposed epidemic of violence, nor even a single horror story of such an event?

Michael Moller, American Thinker:  "There Is No 'Good Regulation'...How many live-saving drugs are never developed because of the prohibitive cost of regulation?"

How many life-killing drugs are prohibited because of the existence of regulation?  "Regulations" are just laws against things that corporations do.  Does anyone really think that people become morally perfect when they file articles of incorporation?  No one is that stupid, not even Michael.  So, he must be lying.  Big surprise, huh?

And, it's been a while since we checked in with our old friend Henry Makow for his unique perspective on world events:

Henry Makow:  "Rosa Parks - Proof Communists Run America.   Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was a Communist Party member who worked as a secretary for the NAACP,  a Communist Jewish banker front. Her refusal to move to the back-of-the-bus was staged by her handlers.  Last week, she was honored by a stamp. In two week she will be honored with a statue in the Capitol.   Was Karl Marx unavailable?"

Roger Simon, Pajamas Media:  "Defeating Obama with Aikido"

Well, it's worth a try- after all, you can't defeat him with votes.

Erik Rush, Canada Free Press:  "In May of this year the APA (American Psychiatric Association) will release its fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)...One begins to see how having such a biased organization whimsically defining and re-defining mental illness in light of recent political developments might be, shall we say, troublesome to say the very least.  So, what new diagnoses, designations, and revisions might be included in the DSM-5?...a host of (conditions) might be used as a pretext for one’s designation as a mental defective.

In the case of those who pose the most dire threat to Obama’s designs – Christians – these will certainly be targeted. After all, who more demonstrably epitomizes mental instability in the eyes of the Marxist atheist than those who commune with and rely upon that which is unseen?"

Well, Erik, as far as I am concerned, being an evangelical "Christian" does provide strong evidence that you are mentally defective.  And if you really believe what you sad above, it's pretty obvious in your case.  So there.

Todd Starnes, Town Hall:  "NBC: Bullies or Bigots?  Does NBC hate Christians?"

Grow up, Todd.  No one likes an asshole.

John Gizzi, Human Events:  "Obama blames GOP — again — for sequestration"

There he goes again- telling the truth.

Ron Radosh, PJ Media:  "The ‘Red’ White but Not True Blue: The Truth about Harry Dexter White — Soviet Agent"

Ever heard of Harry Dexter White?  He died in 1948.  And he ain't coming back.  Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel for some sort of "liberal" scandal.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "BOMB SQUAD CALLED After Protesting Mineworkers Leave Suspicious Package at Peabody Coal...A bomb squad was called after the mineworkers left a suspicious package in the lobby today.  KTVI reported:  The St. Louis City police bomb and arson squad is working the scene of a suspicious package in downtown St. Louis.  The package was discovered just after 6:00 pm at Peabody Plaza, which has been the scene of protest by activist and retired miner protesting the use of coal for power plants and retired miners benefits."

Well, that's just horrible!  Commie bastards!  Here's the sentence that Jim couldn't find room for in his report:

"It was determined after a search of the contents of the backpack, that it contained only clothes"

I guess that detail was irrelevant to the story.

Judie Brown, Renew America:  "Are Catholics getting what we deserve?"

Judie, if you are still supporting the Church hierarchy, you're not getting what you deserve unless you're getting screwed up against the wall in the gym shower room.  Sorry to be so blunt, but that's what it takes to get through to people like you.

Poor Pope Faces Mistreatment

How could someone even write this with a straight face?

(Reuters) - "Pope Benedict's decision to live in the Vatican after he resigns will provide him with security and privacy. It will also offer legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world, Church sources and legal experts say."

Because nothing could be more important than protecting him from the consequences of (sorry, O.J.)  the crime of the century, and probably the crime of the millenium (although a certain A. Hitler may have a claim on that one, so Pope Benedict may have to settle for second place.)

"His continued presence in the Vatican is necessary, otherwise he might be defenseless. He wouldn't have his immunity, his prerogatives, his security, if he is anywhere else," said one Vatican official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"It is absolutely necessary" that he stays in the Vatican, said the source, adding that Benedict should have a "dignified existence" in his remaining years."

Oh, I agree so much- the same "dignified existence" that we grant to all people who are guilty of participating in the rape and torture of children.  Of course, in the eyes of the Church, it is absolutely necessary to protect their criminals, no matter how bestial their existence has been.

We should have learned from Dick Cheney that when a guy looks this evil, he probably is.

"Vatican sources said officials had three main considerations in deciding that Benedict should live in a convent in the Vatican after he resigns on February 28.

Vatican police, who already know the pope and his habits, will be able to guarantee his privacy and security and not have to entrust it to a foreign police force, which would be necessary if he moved to another country."

Don't worry, guys, we can guarantee his privacy and security right here in California- in a secure housing block at Folsom Prison, for example.  No problem.  As a taxpayer, I'm even willing to pick up my share of the tab.

"I see a big problem if he would go anywhere else. I'm thinking in terms of his personal security, his safety. We don't have a secret service that can devote huge resources (like they do) to ex-presidents," the official said."

Of course, if they did have a secret service, there would be no better use for it than protecting this scum from prosecution for his involvement in these bestial acts.

"Another consideration was that if the pope did move permanently to another country, living in seclusion in a monastery in his native Germany, for example, the location might become a place of pilgrimage."

What, by NAMBLA members?  That would be embarrassing.

"The final key consideration is the pope's potential exposure to legal claims over the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandals.

"(If he lived anywhere else) then we might have those crazies who are filing lawsuits, or some magistrate might arrest him like other (former) heads of state have been for alleged acts while he was head of state," one source said."

Crazies, who think that someone should be held responsible for the abominations that he enabled, even though he does wear a fancy dress.  Man, that is crazy.

Like I said, where did Reuters find someone who could write this garbage without losing his lunch on his keyboard and shorting it out?  This is just more evidence (as if we needed any) that preserving their own comfortable places is all these disgusting mob dons care about, and that the morality they endlessly talk about doesn't apply to their own conduct.

House Committee to hold Hearing on Asteroid Threat

That's what the story says.

Anyone want to place any bets on who the first Republican will be who says this is a reason to impeach Obama?

Wingnut Wrapup

We read them so you don't have to...

Town Hall:  "Democratic Ohio Poll Watcher: Yeah, I Voted For Obama Twice"

One!  They've found one!  Now all they have to do is find four million nine hundred ninety nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine more around the country, and the election will be even.  Given that it took three months to find this one, my calculations show that they will be ready to overturn the 2012 Presidential election right around the year 1,252,000.  Hold on to your hats, it's going to be a rough ride!

Michelle Malkin, Town Hall:  "The Blame Righty Mob Falls Silent"

Not at Green Eagle it hasn't.

Craige McMillan, World Net Daily:  "I found America in the Bible!"

Sure you did, Craige.  Need the dosage of your meds adjusted again?  Here's the passage from the Bible that is about America:

"21 So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe’s chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.

22 Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.

23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he (the king) cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth."

If you can come up with one shred of a reason to believe that this is not a specimen of extreme serotonin imbalance, please let me know and I will apologize.

Breitbart.com:  "Nancy Pelosi: Push for Gun Control While We Have the Chance"

The outrage!  The only fair thing for Democrats to do is to push for legislation when they don't have a chance.  Then, Republicans and corporations get their way, which is what the United States is all about.  Haven't you figured that out yet, Nancy?

Jillian Kay Melchior, National Review Online:  "Dick Morris the Moderate"

Ha ha ha ha ha...Dick Morris the Moderate...ha ha ha.  Oh, my sides hurt from laughing.

And here's a typical Conservative response to the latest huge storm on the Atlantic coast:

John Ransom, Town Hall:  "In a world in which it takes 9-12 years for scientists to develop small molecule drugs for commercial use, it’s a relief to know that it only takes 9-12 minutes to tie the LARGEST STORM IN HISTORY into something as complex as our global climate.

Or two days to read, analyze and pass the most complex healthcare bill ever.

Or to ruin the 250 year Republic in just 9-12 years in slavish devotion to bad science, bad economics and a broken and brokered political system."

Bad science, bad economics and a broken political system...Of course, everything else this jackass has to say is complete bullshit, but I want to focus once again on the ongoing Republican effort to blot out exactly what they gave the country during the Bush administration, by the simple expedient of just labeling everything the Democrats do or believe in as exactly analogous to Republican mismanagement.  If they just go on screaming every other minute that Obama is the worst President in history, that global warming is some sort of criminal conspiracy, that it is Democrats that somehow destroyed the ability of the government to do anything (anything, that is, that doesn't help the rich) people will forget that it is their former President and their lunatic ideology that left us in the mess we are in today.  Well, sad to say, it just might work.

Ken Blackwell, Town Hall:  "President Obama’s senior thesis at Columbia University has been embargoed... We may have to wait for his presidential library to open to find out."

Who cares, Ken?  I mean really, who cares?  And by the way, do you think we have forgotten that you are an anti-American, seditious, corrupt criminal who did everything you could to steal a Presidential election?  Because we haven't.

Sher Zieve, Renew America:  "Oppose Obama...prepare to die!"

Well, given that the average Fox News listener is over 65, probably not bad advice.

Jason Hart, Red State:  "Gov. Kasich Enlists Socialized Medicine Lobbyists to Help Implement Obamacare"

Well, who do you expect him to enlist, the Imperial Serbian Navy?

Ron Radosh, PJ Media:  "FX Debuts TV Show About Communist Couple Pretending to Be All-American Family...No, it's not the dramatization of Barack and Michelle's life story but good guess."

Pig.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Saint Pope Celestine V is entombed in L’Aquila. After an earthquake there, Pope Benedict XVI visited Celestine’s shrine and left the woolen pallium he wore during his papal inauguration in April 2005 on his glass casket as a gift."

And I am sure the dead guy appreciated the present.  Anyway, thanks for the history lesson, Jim.  Now back to more of your usual junk:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Egypt’s Upper House Says Female Protesters Are Responsible For Their Own Sexual Abuse"

Another way that Muslim religious assholes are just like Christian religious assholes.

Now, a classic example of Republicans trying to dodge criticism for their evil behavior by inventing some absurd pretext for accusing Democrats of the same thing:

Jamie Weinstein, Daily Caller:  "MSNBC ‘essentially’ ran ‘a voter suppression campaign’ against GOP during 2012 presidential election...By tarring conservatives as racist during the 2012 presidential campaign, MSNBC “essentially” mounted “a voter suppression campaign,” says the author of a new book on media bias.

“Some of the quotes I have in ‘Spin Masters’– you might remember them if you watch a lot of MSNBC — still make me cringe...For example, Chris Matthews asserting that conservatives were giving Romney a long leash (ideologically speaking) because they are racists, I mean, come on — what kind of political commentary is that?"

What kind of political commentary is that, Jamie?  It's a kind that is utterly foreign to you- it's called telling the truth.  Now, it is apparently voter suppression to speak the truth about right wing candidates, because if people see through Republican lies, they won't vote for them.  So, it's a criminal act to reveal what Republicans are really up to.  That's about the size of the argument, right?

Aspen Gorry & Sita Slavov, American Enterprise Institute:  To protect future generations, fix Social Security...Reforming the program now would make it easier for young people to plan for retirement."

Translation:  Just tell them now that we are going to tax them their whole lives and then leave them penniless when they can't work any more.  That way, they can put aside some blankets and stuff for when they are living under a freeway interchange.

Joy Pullman, Daily Caller:  "President ignores evidence government preschool hurts children"

Joy Pullman is the editor of the "School Reform News," published by the Heartland Institute, i.e. the Koch brothers.  The "evidence" she cites (without details, of course,) also comes from the Heartland institute.  Oh, and did I make it clear that that means it was also financed by the Koch Brothers?  I did?  Well, good news bears repeating, huh?  In case you didn't know, the Koch Brothers' idea of good government is for the country to spend not one dime of the $8 billion it wastes on educating young poor kids, but give the money to the Koch brothers instead.

Larry Elder, Town Hall:  "Dorner -- Another Angry Fatherless Black Man With a Gun"

Dorner- another guy who thought having an assault rifle meant he could take on the State in an armed battle.  See, it's all in how you look at things.  After all, he was only exercising his second amendment rights to take a stand against oppressive government- a one man militia.  Hoorah!  Don't tread on me!!!

Mark Davis, Town Hall:  "I am proud of my state of Texas as it looks for all kinds of things to cut to achieve fiscal sanity. But if there is one thing we need to pony up for, it is roads. This is probably true in most states.  This makes states hungry for the largesse of federal grants that will help them fix potholes and bolster bridges.  But that is the crack pipe that got us into our current mess."

Current mess? Oh, you mean roads that you can actually drive on?  Man, that is a problem.  I see why you are so worried.

Mark's article is titled "When Good Ideas Become Bad Ideas."  Hint: it's as soon as Democrats are for them.  Bet you could have never guessed that on your own.

Ben Shapiro, Town Hall:  "Did the Left Create Chris Dorner?"

Of course they did!  In fact, Obama did it personally, by executive order.  Why would you even need to ask such a question?

World Net Daily EXCLUSIVE!  "Taxpayers spend nearly $2 billion to deliver illegal babies...Even though federal law largely bars illegal immigrants from obtaining Medicaid coverage, the program annually pays out more than $2 billion in free emergency coverage that mostly goes to illegal immigrants, according to Kaiser Health News.  The vast majority of the total emergency care reimbursements cover delivering babies, Kaiser reports."

OH GOD!!!! What's that, six bucks apiece we're paying, just so that a bunch of miserable babies that we don't even know can be born healthy?  The outrage!  I demand a six dollar tax cut so I can buy another Whopper and a 64 ounce Coke.  I can figure out how to spend my money better than the government!!

Thank You, Christopher Dorner

There is a silver lining to every cloud as they say.  From Daily Kos:

"...as you also probably know, there's been a ton of breaking developments in the case of the fugitive ex-cop who has now killed four police officers. The cable news channels are all focused on a cabin in flames in which the suspect was believed to be. As a result, there's been almost none of the typical talking head jabber that you might expect before a State of the Union speech."

Not worth four deaths, I guess, but in the United States of 2013, we have to be thankful for small things.

Mexican 'ape woman' buried after 150 years

I know that people will think I am reporting this story out of some sort of sick humor, but I'm not.  Read on:

"An indigenous Mexican woman put on display in Victorian-era Europe because of a rare genetic condition that covered her face in thick hair was buried in her home state on Tuesday in a ceremony that ends one of the best-known episodes from an era when human bodies were treated as collectible specimens.

With her hairy face and body, jutting jaw and other deformities, Julia Pastrana became known as the "ape woman" after she left the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa in 1854, when she was 20, and was taken around the United States by showman Theodore Lent, according to a Norwegian commission that studied her case.
She sang and danced for paying audiences, becoming a sensation who also toured Europe and Russia"

Here is a picture of Juia Pastrana:
Now, why am I interested in her?  It's because I remember very clearly the first time I ever saw this photo.  It was in the late 1960's, and it appeared on the front page of an issue of the Thunderbolt, the newspaper of the National States Rights party, where it was represented as a photo of a crossbreed between a black person and a gorilla, proving that blacks were not really human beings, but apes.

Years later, looking through a book on the history of carnivals, I came across the picture again, this time of course correctly describing what it was.  As you can imagine, I was quite surprised, but at least I was set straight (not that I ever believed that it was really a black person-ape hybrid.  Please give me that much credit.)  But how many ignorant, gullible, hate filled people swallowed this story, fully convinced that it proved that blacks and whites were not the same species?

Whoever wrote this story must have know that it was a lie, but it accomplished its purpose- spreading racist hatred- so I am sure that like right wingers everywhere, they didn't give a damn that they were engaging in one of the lowest forms of human behavior possible.  Well, that's the legacy that we still bear, so that a miniscule percentage of rich people in the South could claim to own other human beings.  And no, sad to say, we have not paid off their debt, a hundred and fifty years later, and their descendants are working as hard as ever to see that the debt hangs around our necks forever.

As the lady said, "What a world."

Duh.

Something that Green Eagle has been talking about for years.  I'm taking no great credit for this, because it should have been obvious to every single person who examined this fabricated nonsense:

"A new academic study confirms that front groups with longstanding ties to the tobacco industry and the billionaire Koch brothers planned the formation of the Tea Party movement more than a decade before it exploded onto the U.S. political scene.

Far from a genuine grassroots uprising, this astroturf effort was curated by wealthy industrialists years in advance. Many of the anti-science operatives who defended cigarettes are currently deploying their tobacco-inspired playbook internationally to evade accountability for the fossil fuel industry's role in driving climate disruption."

Let me make it clear that every single person in the above photos is a sucker, who is doing nothing but serving the agenda of billionaires.

I spent a long time, in the period of 2008 to 2010 or so, documenting the obvious fact that the Tea Party "movement" was a charade, created by the likes of the Koch brothers to claim some sort of popular support for their loathsome agenda.  Well, here is some scientific evidence, if you needed any, to prove something which was totally clear from the beginning.  If you have any interest in this issue, which managed for some time to pollute our national political discourse, read the rest.

The Stupidest Person in Congress

And no, it's not Michelle Bachmann or Louie Gohmert.  They are evil, corrupt, ignorant asses, but the two of them put together aren't as deeply stupid as this guy:

Yes, our Majority Leader in the United States Senate, Harry Reid; a person seemingly able to get kicked in the mouth endlessly without it ever occurring to him that it might be a good idea to move his head.

Anyone with sense must have noticed this a long time ago.  What is precipitating my latest outrage on this subject?  The Following:

"Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee, tells National Review Online that he will “postpone” the nomination of Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s nominee for secretary of defense.

“I’ll do that for as long as it takes,” he says, firmly. “I’m going to make sure there is a 60-vote margin.”

Inhofe is now the second major Republican Senator (after Lindsay Graham) to declare in public that he will misuse the current filibuster rules in a way unprecedented in the entire history of the country, leaving the department of defense without a head.  This comes a month after the deeply stupid and ineducable Reid unilaterally abandoned a golden opportunity to cut off this Republican betrayal of  responsibility.  No, Reid, in an act of breathtaking idiocy, made a deal to not really reform the filibuster process, in return for a "promise" from Republicans to behave themselves- a promise that it took only a few weeks for them to turn their backs on without hesitation.

And who in their right mind could have possibly thought that things would be any different?  How many times during Reid's tenure have we seen the Republicans make "compromises," trading immediate Democratic concessions for promised future Republican good behavior, only to have them laugh in Reid's face when the time came for them to deliver on their end of the deal?

And so, we continue to live in a world where the only challenger on the horizon for the title of "stupidest person in Washington" is a certain character who openly talks about gutting any Federal program that benefits ordinary Americans, and who believes that the obvious strategy when dealing with deeply dishonest opponents is to give them ninety percent of what they want as a start of the negotiating process, and then hope that they will let you leave the room with your wallet.  Yeah, that's right- our Communist Socialist Muslim President, who is going to deliver the State of the Union address this year in front of a man who has threatened several times in public to kill him, without even using the pathetic mote of power necessary to keep this person from turning the President's Constitutional duty into a right wing farce.

No Depth They Won't Sink To

In a Daily Kos article about Debbie Halvorsen, a NRA A+ rated Republican Congressional candidate, we are treated to the following rationale for opposing legislation banning, of all things, puppy mills:

"If dog breeders are driven out of business, hunters who use dogs must pay more for their animals, assuming they are still available, or quit hunting altogether."

The Daily Kos article reminds us:

"The NRA opposes legislation banning puppy mills because hunters may have to pay more for humanely raised dogs, and god knows, licensing dog breeders and subjecting them to health and safety regulations is just another assault on the Second Amendment!"

Just to remind you, here is the life innocent animals are expected to endure, so some jackass with a gun doesn't have to pay a few dollars more to enjoy his "hobby" of killing things:

Of course, how can we expect a shred of concern for the lives of these puppies, from people who destroy animals for fun?

This sort of attitude is not merely inhuman; it is subhuman.  There is absolutely no depravity that Republicans will not sink to, rather than see corporations lose an opportunity for one cent of profit. We are fighting people with as little sense of decency as any Mongol Horde or Vandal mob that ever existed.  Permitting people with this attitude to exist (outside of conditions very similar to those these puppies must endure) is an immediate danger to civilization itself, and (when you factor in their lies about global warming) a threat to the continued existence of the human race.

But, it's all okay, as long as some rich guy makes money off of it.

Why Are We Stuck With These People

Telling us what we are required to believe?  Here's Jennifer Rubin, and why, O God, hasn't the Washington Post kicked this lying hack to the curb?  Don't we deserve at least the pretense that the employees of our major national news organizations are going to try to tell the truth?

Well, Jennifer has made up her mind that, two weeks into Obama's second term, he's a complete failure.  Her comments made me so furious that I just have to share them, so let's go:

"We are barely out of January and all this has occurred: We learned the economy contracted in the 4th quarter of 2012."

Totally as a result of Republican budget cuts in State and local governments where they were in control.  But of course, this deliberate economic sabotage is presented by Ms. Rubin as a colossal failure by Obama.

"President Obama is trying to wriggle out of a sequester, which he insisted upon in the 2011 budget negotiations."

That is not true.  The sequester was the result of criminal Republican intransigence, in which Republican legislators acted to destroy the economy if they didn't get what they wanted.  Under the circumstances the sequester was the best deal that Obama could get.

"The Congressional Budget Office says our debt is dangerously increasing."

Another Republican lie, gladly repeated by Ms. Rubin.  The Congressional Budget Office doesn't throw charged characterizations of the economy into its forecasts.

"Obama was forced to push Susan Rice aside..."

Yeah, again by vicious misuse of Senatorial power to destroy a highly qualified appointee.

"and should have pushed Chuck Hagel off the boat."

Because despite being a Republican, Hagel turned overnight into their worst enemy when he agreed to act like a patriotic American and help a Democratic President continue his history of almost miraculous foreign policy success.

"And Benghazi -- you remember the story the mainstream media would not cover?..."

First of all, that is a lie because the mainstream media did cover the hell out of this "story;" and second, that is all the more disgusting because there is no story there, other than another Republican attempt to sabotage the Obama administration, regardless of the cost to the country.

" -- has turned into a debacle."

Another utter smear.  Republicans (and Ms. Rubin herself) have spent months telling dozens of different lies about Benghazi, and despite their screaming that continues to this day, they have convinced no one but their own stupid, vicious followers that anything wrong happened.  But Ms. Rubin continues to blame Obama for a mortal sin that neither she nor her Republican collaborators can define.

"Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta testified today that the president was absent during the Benghazi, Libya, attack(s)"

No he didn't.  Or rather, he did in the edited account of his testimony released by Republicans and referred to here by the shameless Rubin.

"and neither he nor Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff spoke to anyone in the White House after briefly telling the president an attack was underway."

No, but as we know now, the White House was in constant communication with the Army and the Defense Department.  It is apparently a crime that the information was conveyed through normal communications channels, and not in the form of hysterical phone calls from the Secretary of Defense.

 "What?!?"

Yeah, what!?!

This evil woman, who came to our attention over the last eight months or so by spinning an unending series of lies intended to destroy this country by making Mitt Romney the President of the United States, can literally not write a single line without spresding  vicious, traitorous falsehoods.  And yet there she is, vomiting forth her nastiness to the entire nation with the blessing of the Washington Post, while people like Markos Moulitsas, Brad DeLong and John Amato, who work every day to tell the truth, are virtually unknown.  I must point out again that you would have to be stupid in the highest degree to believe that this sort of thing is anything but a deliberate attempt to seed our public discourse with a fatal poison.

Sorry to be so angry, but man, does this sort of thing irritate me.

Maybe I'm Just Stupid or Something...

But two issues that are in the news these days, attracting left wing attention as well as providing an opportunity for the right to get on with its usual wailing and shrieking, don't seem to have a lot of substance to me:

First, the issue of the use of drones in combat:  My understanding of war (however fragmentary it may be) is that the whole point of it is to kill as many of the enemy as you can, while getting as few of your own guys killed in the process.  I suspect that there is something of a very outmoded form of chivalry involved with those who are against drones- it just doesn't seem fair to reduce the likelihood that you will get killed in battle to zero.  And maybe someone wants to make the case that, without casualties and the consequent alienation of their populations, there is no brake on governments using warfare as a standard tactic of diplomacy.  Fine, that makes some sense, but I don't think it is what is being argued here.  War is horrible and we should never resort to it except as a last resort, but is drone warfare really any more abominable than any other form of warfare?  I can't answer this question one way or the other, but I suspect that, to the victim, getting killed by a drone is noworse than getting killed by a manned fighter plane, or a shell from a tank.

Second, there is the tremendous outrage over the fact that the President might authorize the killing of American civilians who have chosen to fight with our enemies.  This issue bothers me even more than the drone thing, for here I see nothing at work but pure national chauvinism.  If an American citizen has truly gone over to the service of a clear enemy, why should his life be any more precious than if he were Iraqi or Iranian, people who have true grievances against the United States?

An Iranian might very justly tell himself that he is taking up arms against the country that destroyed his country's democracy and replaced it with a vicious dictatorship; and where major factions in the government are openly agitating for more unjustified military aggression directed toward his people.  Is that not a causus belli, or do they have to wait over there until the next time that the Cheneys and the McCains seize control of our government, and direct a few hundred million dollars worth of explosives toward their country, before they have a right to be angry at us?

The few Americans who have become our targets, on the other hand, seem to me to be mostly juveniles who have let their macho, violent fantasies overtake their reason (not unlike lots of their gun-toting right wing compadres in this country,) and who really have little more to complain about if they fall victim to their idiocy, than a would-be suicide bomber who blows himself up making a bomb.

Well...maybe there's something really defective with my moral standards, but these two things have been bothering me as I hear more and more pontificating on the matter.  Am I way off base?  I just don't know.

Our Miserable Mainstream Press

Collaborating with the right, once again...  Here's a story from Yahoo:

"Emails: Decision on NBC host stirred response

WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia prosecutors received scores of emails from citizens upset because NBC television journalist David Gregory was not criminally charged for displaying a high-capacity ammunition magazine on his "Meet the Press" show.

Prosecutors received roughly 50 emails demanding that Gregory be charged, plus more than 150 others expressing outrage in the days after officials decided to not prosecute him. The Associated Press obtained the messages through a public records request.

The emails were sent by people from around the country, including some self-identified gun owners and Second Amendment supporters, who accused prosecutors of hypocritically and unevenly enforcing D.C.'s strict gun laws and of giving Gregory preferential treatment."

So let me get this straight:  It is a national story that 200 people complained that David Gregory was not prosecuted for displaying a 30-round magazine on TV in Washington, where they are illegal.  Forget the fact that the law banning them is to prevent people from using them in guns, which, obviously, Gregory had no intention of doing.  Just consider this:  200 e-mails constitutes a major story, as far as our pathetic press is concerned.  The article at Yahoo itself had 1,300 responses at the time I saw it.  The You Tube video of Beyonce's Super Bowl performance has over 1.3 million hits.  Here's a cat video that has over 33 million hits and over 21,000 comments:

200 e-mails is a gigantic, pathetic failure, indicating that, essentially no one in the world gives a damn about this moronic pseudo-scandal.  Yet, our mainstream press is perfectly willing to use these 200 e-mails to pretend that the mighty forces of the right are rising up in righteous indignation, in the face of some real outrage.

I remember a couple of years ago when I was reporting fairly extensively about the tea party.  I repeatedly covered miserable little demonstrations of a couple of hundred people that the press presented as some sort of massive popular uprising.  This was not a case of the mainstream media being duped by right wingers.  It was clearly a case of collaboration, in which the media Quislings did everything they could to aid the right in achieving its goals.  And that is what is going on here.  At this point, the real reason for the existence our mainstream press is to serve the interests of their hyper-rich owners, not to present the truth.  Anyone who stands up to them is subject to being crushed, and that is all that is going on here.

The press wasn't always this bad.  That's before Saint Ronnie and the ever-wonderful Newt Gingrich saw to it that our media could be totally taken over by a pack of self-serving, greed maddened rich people, who didn't give a damn about anything except manipulating the American people into cutting their own throats, so the rich could lap up the blood.

You can add this to the list of problems which this country has to solve before it gets back on track- problems deliberately created by the would be oligarchs of our nation, in the conviction that everything on earth belongs to them, and that the other 99.99% of the people deserve nothing.  That list is so long now that I see no hope that we can ever deal with it in any meaningful way, before corporate intransigence results in the destruction of the human race by our self-generated climate.  Even the simplest gun-control measures, with over 90% approval, seem to be impossible in the face of corporate intransigence.  How can we ever hope to crush them out of existence and reclaim our country, without a conflagration that will make World War II look like a small time disturbance?

Wingnut Wrapup

The pickings have been a little thin lately; wingnuts seem to have lost their mojo or something.  Well, just because they are acting particularly stupid these days, don't think Green Eagle is going to stop kicking them when they are down:

Peter Heck, American Thinker:  "Beyonce's Pig Snout...Beyonce wasn't portraying beauty last night. She was portraying a woman with no discretion who feels she must degrade her body in order to gain fame, money and the attention of unprincipled men"

Sorry, Peter, Beyonce already has fame, money and the attention of unprincipled men- all she can handle.  The real message here:  Even though she has been voted the most beautiful woman in the world, she is still really an animalistic pig, because she's black.  Of course, Peter would deny that, and claim I am the real racist for pointing this out, but so what?  What decent person on earth would care about what human garbage like Peter has to say for himself?

Now, news we don't care about in the least:

Sandy Fitzgerald, Newsmax:  "Palin Mourns “American Sniper” Kyle's Death"

Like I said, is there anyone in the country that cares?

Dick Morris, Newsmax:  "Obama Causing Double Dip Recession"

Hurray!  Perfect proof that the economy is about to take off on an absolutely unheard of period of record growth!

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Sandy Hook Father: My Child Is Safer at Home Where I am Armed"

No, he is not.  He is actually far more likely to suffer a gunshot wound or to kill himself than he would be almost anywhere else.  Quit telling us these lies, you evil monster.

And a new pseudo-scandal:

Kyle Olson, Town Hall:  "Texas 6th Graders Design Flags for a New Socialist Nation"

The horror!  Actually, the lesson was about how socialist countries use symbols for propaganda purposes:

"Wade Lebay was even asked to read part of a sixth-grade lesson plan that showed different countries' flags and instructed students to ‘notice that socialist and communist countries use symbolism on their flags’"

Seems like wingnuts might be interested in having kids learn that, but no...not when it stands in the way of more anti-left jingoism.  Sorry, Kyle, this is one scandal that everyone will have forgotten about by tomorrow.  Except for your fellow loons, of course, who will still be shreiking about it twenty years from now.

And now another scandal that will wither on the vine:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Obama Berates Cameraman During Press Conference ... During his press conference today on fiscal issues and the upcoming sequester, Barack Obama lashed out at a cameraman in the Briefing Room"

And here's Barack, "lashing out:"

Man, that was really a mean spirited attack, huh?  Where would we be without your witty contributions to our discourse, Jim?  After all, you didn't earn the nickname "the dumbest guy on the internet" by keeping your mouth shut when you didn't have anything to say.  But wait, Jim isn't done with the idiocy for today:

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Pakistan Plans Amusement Park in Abbottabad – Where OBL Was Killed"

God forbid!  Let me first note that this amusement park is just that-an amusement park.  It has absolutely nothing to do with Osama or Al Qaida.  But apparently, because Osama lived there, this city of 881,000 people has no right to do anything but wither away and vanish from the face of the earth.  Man, I hate to think about what that means we should do with Jim's home town of St. Louis.  Would mass slaughter and salting of the earth be enough, or do we need to use a hydrogen bomb?

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Universal Background Checks Lead to Confiscation and Extermination.  That’s how it goes in history."

Illustrated with the following oh-so-relevant picture:

Of course, when it goes like that in history is never explained.  Perhaps because it never went like that in history.  Particularly with the Nazis, who managed to establish a complete totalitarian dictatorship without changing the gun laws in Germany one bit.  But hey, guys, keep on running around screaming Hitler and pretending that he was a left winger.  Look how well it's doing for you.  Oh, and did I mention that Jim Hoft is the dumbest guy on the internet?  I did?  Well, it never hurts to repeat the truth.

Armand C. Hale, Renew America:  "Making of a totalitarian state...The Emperor in Chief would just relish in the disarming of every law abiding citizen. This is his belief in line of his notion of transforming America. This transformation would not be for the best, I can assure you.  And know that once something is banned, it will be easier to ban other things. The government will make an argument for banning anything they so determine to be in the best interest of society."

Well then, let's just give up.  We were screwed ever since the day the government banned murder and burglary.  Armand makes this sage observation:

"Countries where the citizens have turned in their weapons now regret taking that step."

Of course he doesn't mention a single example, because there isn't one.  Like right wingers everywhere, Armand just invented a "fact" to support his unsupportable position.  But wait, there's more:

"We cannot be sheep being lead to the slaughter which is what the Emperor in Chief wants to see in order to consolidate more power for himself. As long as we have a free will to fight back with whatever means available, then we will do just that."

You will not do that, Armand.  You will use your free will to run home and hide under mommy's bed, while wimpering out your lies.  What we need in this country are more people who are not afraid to look at the truth, not more paranoid, scared little nothings parroting their obscene smears of the President.

Laurie Roth, American Thinker:  "If Islamic males can't control themselves, is castration the answer?"

Laurie, if you can't control your hatred, is lobotomy the answer?  Okay, okay, we're tied in the stupidity of that exchange.  Congratulations, Laurie, you almost won an argument with a parrot.

Larry Elder, Town Hall:  "'Zero Dark Thirty' Threatens the 'Bush-the-Incompetent' Narrative "

No it doesn't.  'Zero Dark Thirty' is fiction, Larry.  What you are saying is like insisting "Winnie the Pooh" threatens the "Bears can't talk" narrative.  Bush is (let me remind you) the worst President in the history of the country.  That will be true (we can only hope) for ever.  He was the most corrupt President ever, the most incompetent militarily, the stupidest, the most ignorant of the basics of American democracy, the most in thrall to idiotic economic policies...I can go on here as you well know.  We have had horrible Presidents like Warren G. Harding and his pack of corrupt associates, James Buchanan, whose incompetence and disengagement allowed the United States to slide into the Civil War, and others with fatal flaws, but none ever approached Bush in uniting every single possible failure in a single person.  And no, we are not going to be bullied into forgetting that fact.

Michael Barone:  "At Last, Republicans Make Their Case to Main Street"

Michael, the Republicans have been making their case to main street for decades.  That's not the problem.  The problem is that main street fell for it and let them try their ideas out.  The result: the near destruction of the country.  They made their case, alright.  The problem is that main street isn't falling for it any more, after seeing what happened last time.  Now, if what you really mean is "At last, Republicans can come up with a whole new set of lies to manipulate people into giving the country to the rich," well, I think you are on course there, because that's what they are going to do.

David Harsanyi, Town Hall:  "Rove has a point...Purely as a tactical matter, why not weed out inept -- or insane -- candidates before they start spouting off about a woman's organic ability to prevent pregnancy when raped?"

Because insane candidates are the only ones your base will support, David.  Without them, you're toast.

Cliff May, Town Hall:  "It’s difficult not to like Salam Fayyad. The prime minister of the Palestinian Authority has an avuncular demeanor and old-fashioned professorial charm. He boasts a doctorate in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and remains loyal to the Longhorns."

He went to school in TEXAS?  No wonder the Palestinians are fucked.

And now, the How Many Right Wing Bugaboos Can We Fit In One Headline winner of the day:

Capital Research Center:  "Soros-Funded Pornographer Tries To Link Global Warming To Chicago's Horrific Murder Rate"

Soros...pornography...fake global warming claims...Chicago...murder.  Wow, the only thing they left out is Kenya.  I'm really sorry that I can't tell you what this was supposed to be about, because this headline linked to a story about police in China arresting someone for running over a toddler.  And no, I'm not kidding.

David Truman, PJ Media:  "Why Would Any American Need an AR-15? Zetas, That’s Why...Sen. Feinstein: tell Arizonans how a seven-shot pistol can hold off 20 butchers on their land at night. They're waiting."

This is the story of a rancher who was killed on his property near the Mexican border.  No one knows who killed him, but David is sure it was a Mexican drug gang.  If it had happened in Minnesota, I'm sure he would blame one of those terrifying Canadian drug gangs.  So, here's the balance:  One guy supposedly killed because he could allegedly have saved himself with an assault rifle, versus twenty dead school children who were killed with an assault rifle.  The kids?  Collateral damage- too damn bad.  That's the price we pay for our FREEDOM!  The rancher?  Why, even though we don't know a single fact about the nature of his murder, that is intolerable.  So glad to see David has his priorities straight.

Now, paranoid schizophrenia in action:

Rand Paul:  “I really think part of the cause may have been there was a gun running operation going on in Benghazi, leaving Libya and going to Turkey and distributing arms to the rebels… They’ve interviewed the captain of the ship. A ship from Libya sailed for Turkey a week before the ambassador was killed. It was full of arms and they interviewed the captain and he actually specifically talks about the distribution of the arms to Syrian rebels… And I think the administration needs to answer are they running guns through Turkey to Syria.”

No comment needed.  Or wanted either.  The sooner we forget that pile of garbage, the better.

Ted Nugent, World Net Daily:  "LET ME BE FREE!"

How about this deal, Ted?  You stop threatening to kill the President, and we'll let you be free.  Sounds fair to me.

White Children Get Very Bad News:  "JEW THAT RUN THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT GET NEGROES TO BEAT WHITES[THIS JUST HAPPENS TO BE A BLACK BUT JEWS WANT WHITES TO THE BE THE VICTIMS]] UNTIL THEIR HEADS EXPLODE"

I think my head just did explode- and I didn't even get a beating.  Here's a little more from this website:

"JEW NETWORKS ABC NBC FOX CNN CBS NPR PBS, HAVE A FLOOD OF THESE VIDEOS DAILY, BUT JEWS MAKE SURE WHITES NEVER SEE THEM"

The perfect way to make sure that whites never see their videos- put them on NBC, Fox, CNN, CBS, NPR and PBS.  Really using your brains there, Jews.

Dealing With Our Economic Problems- Republican Style

At least in that great bastion of economic rationality, the Virginia Legislature, last heard of trying to destroy our Presidential electoral system in order to put a Repubican that no one wants into the White House:

"Virginia moves closer to creating state’s own currency

Lawmakers in Virginia say they want to keep their options open in case the value of the U.S. dollar ever collapses — so they’re considering minting state coinage.

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that a proposal to study the effectiveness of such a plan “sailed through” the state’s lower house this week:

The idea that Virginia should consider issuing its own money was dismissed as just another quixotic quest by one of the most conservative members of the state legislature when [Virginia Del. Robert G.] Marshall introduced it three years ago. But it has since gained traction not only in Virginia, but also in states across the country as Americans have grown increasingly suspicious of the institutions entrusted with safeguarding the economy.

This week, the proposal by the Prince William Republican sailed through the House of Delegates with a two-to-one majority.

“This is a serious study about a serious topic,” Marshall said Tuesday. “We’re not completely powerless.”

 These guys they're not.

Really, I don't have all that much to say about this idea, so I'll let someone else do the talking:

"Article I, Section. 10.

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility."

The Constitution.  Such a noble, immutable document, until it stands in their way.  Then, nothing but trash.  Really, States can't grant titles of nobility, but maybe they could grant a title of ignobility, and give it to themselves.

A Solution To Capital Gains Tax Rates

Today, Green Eagle is about to offer a solution to a supposed problem that has gripped tax policy for decades, and which, as usual, business interests in government (i.e. Republicans) and the press have succeeded as portraying as utterly intractable.  That is the issue of the difference in taxation between ordinary income and capital gains.

It is forgotten that there was originally a relatively rational reason for treating capital gains income differently from regular income.  That is because much capital gains income comes from investments made years in advance of the profit; investments which, because of inflation, were worth more than their dollar value at the time they are sold.  To give a hypothetical example, let's say that a person makes a $10,000 investment in year one, and sells his investment in year six, for $20,000.  Under normal standards, that would represent a profit of $10,000.  However, let us suppose that, between year one and year six, there was, say, 20% inflation.  That means that, in year six dollars, the investment was actually worth $12,000, making a profit of $8,000 in year six dollars, not $10,000.  Taxing this as though the entire thing took place in year six dollars was, quite reasonably, thought to be both unfair and a disincentive to investment.  So, the idea of taxing capital gains at a lower rate than ordinary income, was born.

Of course, as soon as there was a consensus for that idea, the origin of it was erased from memory, amid endless demands from the rich that less and less taxes be imposed on their income.  This has culminated in the absurd demands of many Republicans that capital gains not be taxed at all, and in the very real unfair advantage that people who don't work for their money now enjoy.

Here is how easy it would be to treat capital gains fairly.  First, a small table could be included in tax forms, updated every year, looking like this:

This shows how much inflation has decreased the value of every dollar invested at any point in the last ten years.  When calculating taxable income, the taxpayer would use the "inflated value" section of the chart to determine the value of the effective investment in current dollars.  For example, $10,000 invested in 2006, for this tax year would have a net present value of $11,750.  This figure would be subtracted from the amount realized from the investment this year, giving the net taxable income.  This ludicrously simple (by IRS standards) rule would instantly compensate investors for the effect of inflation (as I mentioned, the only real reason to treat capital gains differently from ordinary income) and remove the disadvantage that multiple-year investments have over other forms of compensation*.    Incidentally, it took me about twenty minutes to find inflation figures for the last ten years and compile this chart.

Now, here is the point  that I want to make with this whole discussion.  I am not an economist nor an accountant.  There is nothing in my proposal that is in any way profound, or beyond the reasoning capacity of many politicians and economists today.  The reason that you do not hear any of them offering simple solutions like this for our economic problems  is not because they are stupid, but because they don't want simple solutions, they want unfairly beneficial treatment for the rich who pay their salaries.  Rather than dealing with a real, but simply solved, problem, they create a cloud of obfuscation, and in the darkness they manipulate into existence something created solely to benefit a small group.  We see this over and over again- problems remain unsolved, not because politicians can't solve them, but because they won't.

*I want to add that, based on normal practice, I do not believe this chart need extend any more than ten years into the past.  However, it could obviously extend for 12 years or 15 years, or any period thought fair.

A Suggestion: Body Armor

I still remember the shootout outside a Bank of America on Laurel Canyon Blvd. in North Hollywood in which two idiots in full body armor and armed with assault weapons were able to hold off dozens of police for hours.

We're hearing a lot about assault weapons lately, but I think the issue of body armor deserves a little of our attention.  Here in California, if you use a gun in the commission of a crime, you automatically get five years added on to your sentence.  Along those lines, I suggest the following:

1.  Anyone who is convicted of a violent crime while wearing body armor will get an automatic 5 years additional sentence.

2.  In the case of a death resulting from a crime, the wearing of body armor by the perpetrator shall be considered evidence of premeditation, and shall automatically result in first degree murder charges.

I know this is a lesser issue, compared to the three hundred million guns we are plagued with, but I think it would be a good idea to include something like this in any upcoming firearms regulations.

An Unbelievable Asshole

Here's the disgusting Senator John McCain, "questioning" Defense Secretary designate Chuck Hagel in a Senate "hearing" last week.  Please give it the two minutes it takes to listen to it:

Remember that Hagel is a man who served with McCain for many years in the Senate- as a fellow Republican- who McCain claimed was his friend, and who has now been appointed to one of the most important positions in the country.  The sick, vicious McCain attacks him like a prosecutor questioning a rapist or murderer, showing him utter contempt and using the chance for nothing but one more opportunity to indirectly attack Barack Obama, who he hates with a passion because the black man Obama beat him in 2008.  And yet this nauseating individual is treated far and wide as a paragon of virtue, and one of the most essential contributors to our national discussion.  There is no clearer sign of our national political malaise than the fact that this degraded loser is held up as a hero.

A Housekeeping Note

One of the most neglected tasks of most bloggers, I suspect, is updating their blog list.  Even on really big blogs, you will find many of the links lead to long-expired sites.  Well, Green Eagle is no different, but I finally got around to adding a few websites I like.  This was largely motivated by Magpie, one of my all time favorite bloggers, moving to a new site, but includes several new entries to the list, including the great economics blogger Brad DeLong, Simply Left Behind, a blog I've enjoyed for years, Gin and Tacos, and Welcome to Pottersville 2.

I've really like the material at these sites, and any minuscule thing I can do to get them a few more hits will be mutually beneficial to both the blogs and the readers.  Thanks to all of you for keeping me interested over the years.

A Tragic Story

From Breitbart.com, we learn of the deeply distressing story of one Chris Kyle, a fine American who was brutally gunned down by a madman, while Chris was trying to come to the aid of a fellow gun victim.

This is exactly the kind of tale that points out how we must all have weapons in order to prevent this sort of thing.  If Mr. Kyle had only had a weapon available and knew how to use it, I'm sure that this tragedy would never have happened.

And the loss of Mr. Kyle is particularly sad, because he is a New York Times bestselling author, with so much wisdom to provide the rest of us.  Here's his best selling book:

Yes indeed, Mr. Kyle was the "most lethal sniper in U. S. Military history."  Now, if only he had a gun with him...

Oh wait...Mr. Kyle was killed at a Texas gun range, where he was "helping a fellow military member learn sniper shooting technique."

And yet we were assured by responsible parties testifying in front of Congress last week that all of these mass murders would not happen if only teachers and mothers with children had assault rifles.  Presumably, they are much better shots than  the "most lethal sniper in U. S. Military history."

The Tale of Obama and the Gun

So, the White House revealed that Barack Obama has been spending some of his time at Camp David learning how to shoot skeet.  Of course, many right wingers dismissed this story as utter nonsense, because Democrats melt like the wicked witch of the west if they touch a gun.  Well, here's where this irrelevant story takes a familiar turn.

The next step was the release today of this photo:
Well, anyone want to guess how long it will be before we hear that this is a cheap photoshop forgery, and who will be first out of the gate- Jim Hoft?  Jerome Corsi over at World Net Daily?  Or will a new challenger emerge to trumpet long and loud that this is just the latest malicious distortion from Obama, like the birth certificate thing, and the ongoing denials that he is the Antichrist?  It's bound to happen, you know.

LATE BREAKING NEWS!   Oh, how could Green Eagle ever have been so gullible!  They beat him to it!  The contest is over already!  Here is a small sample of comments by gun "experts"  from the story at World Net Daily reporting about this photo:

"-I'm calling fake. Just like his birth certificate."

"Look at the shoulder. I haven't shot skeet in 30 years but I still know it would hurt like hell to shoot holding a shotgun that way. On the shoulder joint/upper arm? Come on. Does he think the sheeple are that stupid?"

"Is the photo photoshopped? Now we have a suspect for the photoshopping of Obama's birth certtificate."

"What a JOKE!!!! One thing I can add is his Photoshop person is getting "A Little" Better!!"

"Nice photo shop job, that imbecile wouldn't know which way to point it."

"This photo is just as fake as the "birth certificate." It's likely a photoshopped image. The gun should be pointing up, since skeet are released into the air above the shooter. There's way WAY too much smoke. What's with that smoke out the side? His eye is too low to actually see over the barrel. Hold the shotgun against your shoulder like that, Barry, and you're sure gonna hurt the next day. And what's that coming out of the barrel besides smoke? The choke isn't screwed in? Why is there no evidence of him turning to follow the skeet in the photo? Very unconvincing."

"there is no recoil evident in his body stance, his sight line does not line up properly over the barrel, and I have never seen a shotgun produce visible smoke at the moment of discharge. This photo is staged and/or Photoshopped. Phoney *** is a blatant liar!"

And my personal favorite:

"Sorry but the Pres. cannot take criticism of any kind, beit personal or political without defending himself."

Because if he points out that right wing assholes are telling one more lie about him, there is something wrong with him.  God, how could I ever be stupid enough to think that they wouldn't beat me to any lie about Obama?

And as if we shouldn't have seen this coming, this one hundred percent pack of meaningless dribble already has a name:  Breitbart.com has christened it "Skeetgate."  How many years are we going to have to listen to them firing themselves up into a smoking fury over that?

Update:  Just for the record, I was going to put together a sort of Wingnut Wrapup about this developing "story," but this is one I just can't be bothered with.  If you want to see more about this pathetic nonsense, try Roy Edroso at the Village Voice, who has found as much as anyone could stand.
