Teaching the Controversy

I'm sure most of you have heard the above phrase.  It has arisen, in the last few years, as a battle cry among evangelical Christians and their enablers, after it became clear that they were never going to be able to convince sane people to replace the established scientific facts of evolution with a pack of infantile myths crammed down the throats of school children.  So, they fell back on their "compromise" position, which involves battering us into treating their patent nonsense on an equal footing with scientific fact.  This would be the "centrist" thing to do, and therefore, it would be fair to everyone, right?

Well, I am sure most of you are familiar with this idiocy, but what I have been noticing lately is that it is a paradigm of the entire Republican approach to reality- the fabrication of a wholly specious (and in the end utterly ridiculous) alternate reality, and then immense pressure being applied to force people to grant this mythology equal validity with real evidence about the world in which we live.  The result of this behavior, normally abetted in every way by our miserable excuse for a mainstream press, has been the watering down and eventual neutralization of every attempt to respond meaningfully to the problems that we face.

We are seeing a classic example of this at work today in the gun debate provoked by the recent school shooting in Connecticut.  Even the most rational, harmless proposals from the left, like eliminating the gun show loophole or requiring guns to be kept securely, are obscured and neutralized by endless, moronic right wing bleating about video games and violent movies- in fact nothing but a thinly veiled attempt to blame the left (and the Jews in particular, as is always the case when someone on the right attacks Hollywood) for the damage wrought by uncontrolled gun possession in this country.  The real evidence that violent murder is directly related to the number of available guns, and that people with guns are far more likely to be victims of gun violence than people without them, is washed away by the endless crackpot theories from the right, which continue to receive respectful treatment from the press.  The result this time, as in all previous occasions, is inevitably going to be a slow draining away of any momentum for dealing with the problem, until nothing but the most superficial action is taken; where the issue will rest until the next appalling gun murder, at which time the process will repeat itself.

Of course, there is no more blatant example of this phenomenon than the supposed controversy about global warming.  Although scientists who study this subject agree 100% (okay, okay, in reality only 99.83%) that man made global warming is a threat to the continued existence of the human race, pseudo-scientific lies paid for by the energy industry are routinely treated as equally trustworthy as scientific research; the result being that the real issues (which are beyond doubt to anyone who cares about the truth) are obscured, momentum for dealing with this very real problem is dissipated, and nothing is done.

And let us not forget the most damaging and destructive of all Conservative pseudo-theories: supply side economics.  Despite this notion being patent nonsense from the very beginning, and despite the fact that every effort to implement it has resulted in nothing but disaster, its proponents- rich people who stand to benefit from it regardless of its effects on everyone else- continue to pour money into spreading this looking-glass lunacy, and the mainstream press continues to collaborate with them in treating their claims as equally valid as conclusions derived from actual real world evidence.  And thus, no amount of being right time after time can result in the likes of Paul Krugman being treated as anything but a crazy ideologue, while conversely, the many people who have pushed this disastrous nonsense in the face of failure after failure are still treated as if they were serious participants in some sort of actual dialogue, rather than hired intellectual thugs employed to prevent the truth from interfering with the schemes of their masters.

Though I could go on here, let me finish with right wing, neoconservative foreign policy, whose total reliance on belligerent bullying and massive acquisition of military hardware has, as far as I can tell, produced nothing but one disaster after another, but which is still promoted far and wide as the answer to every foreign policy problem the country ever faces.

And thus, government in the United States today:  reality versus deliberate lies concocted to achieve a desired outcome for a small fraction of the people, on every single issue; and a playing field in which the rules- that both sides must be given equally respectful treatment- insure that those who want to deal with our country's problems are simply worn out fighting against idiotic but highly financed nonsense from their opponents.   Thus, despite occasional victories, we seem to be able make little real headway in our fight to right our country, which continues to founder in seas of dissembling and self-serving nonsense.

Given this situation, it is amazing that Obama and the Democrats were able to muster enough support to enable them to avoid a total depression.  Of course, the forces of ignorance keep doing everything they can to push us back off the economic cliff, so sad to say, the results aren't really in on that one.  It is enough to make most any rational person just give up and move to Costa Rica or something; of course that is exactly what it is intended to do, so that the forces of destruction can continue eating away at the flesh of the country until its corpse collapses on top of them.  So far, their strategy, no matter how implausible and ridiculous it may seem from the outside, seems to be making slow but continued progress as it slouches toward inevitable apocalyptic destruction.  Of course, to the religious lunatics on the right, that would be a wonderful thing too.

Requiem for the Teabaggers

Remember the tea party?

Remember when they were the force that was going to change the country, the people who were going to send the Socialist Communist Muslim back to Kenya and run the country the way the founding fathers wanted it run, with no black people in charge, and with businessmen entitled to do anything they damned felt like, where everyone could carry an automatic weapon anywhere, and where government kept its hands off of Medicare, and all of the other good things that government created?

Where did they go?

Green Eagle was all over the teabaggers, right from the beginning.  He even went to numerous tea party events, and followed many more closely.  So, who could be better than Green Eagle to explain what happened?  Here's my take:

The tea party people, as distinguished from ordinary Republican drones, never existed.  At the end of the Bush Administration, Republican leaders had to face a dreadful prospect:  They had just cheered wildly while their own government destroyed the economy, involved us in a shameful military aggression which was not only a monumental war crime, but seemed to have been run by bunch of schoolyard bullies.  And they couldn't even claim with straight faces that Bush and Cheney were anything but party-line conservatives, running the whole operation just the way that Conservatives always dreamed of running things.  As credible leaders, the Repubican party was dead, even for most of its mentally deficient followers.

Luckily, there was something that Republican leaders knew they could count on- their miserable "base" was made up of people with no long term memory, and a longing to be lied to again, and told that they are the only good people on earth- that it is evil to care about others, to help the poor, to object to being robbed blind by the rich and powerful, and above all to do anything good for non-white people.  So they knew all they had to do was to wait things out.

Thus, the tea party.  As I documented in literally dozens of posts, most teabag demonstrations were synthetic dumb shows, attracting minuscule crowds, after being heavily financed by the Koch brothers and other neo-Krupp moguls, just itching to be the economic powers behind a newly reborn fascism.  The Republicans counted (quite properly) on the mainstream press to never dig under the surface, and report this phenomenon as some sort of real popular uprising.

This whole thing was created to give the dregs of our society, the White racist takers, the gun wavers, the tax haters, somewhere to take shelter until they forgot the damage that Republicans had done to them and their families, and were ready to rejoin the fold.  So, after a couple of years, when a new Presidential election was upon us, the rich moguls pulled their money out of the tea party and put it into electing one of their own President.  (Note: in case you didn't notice,it didn't work.  I guess even Republican tools don't forget having their lived destroyed all that fast. Oh well, there's always 2016 to try the same thing all over again.)  Without this massive backing, the tea party groups disappeared like a palmed card.  And no one feels the least bit sorry.  Sane people are happy to see the last of them, and their one-time followers have moved on to a more open and unapologetic form of race hatred, mixed with contempt for their duty as citizens to help the government function.  Sarah Palin, McCain, Dick Armey and the rest of the tea party enablers have been pushed off the stage, replaced with Paul Ryan, Rand Paul, and a whole new breed of phony technocrats, selling a new, revised version of the same old thing.  The teabaggers are happy to come home to mama, as long as they get to hate the same old people, and thus, the fiction that was the tea party can be allowed to dissipate like the ghost of Saruman vanishing in the wind above Hobbiton.  And there's always a new leader to take the place of the old leaders.

The Most Disgusting Headline in Months

From a Connecticut newspaper, we learn this:

"Father of Newtown victim heckled at hearing"

There might be some hope for this country if we were just dealing with flaming assholes.  But the other side are animals who are not capable of human decency. Sorry, that's my takeaway from all the years I've been watching this sort of thing.

Green Eagle Talks to a Wingnut

Here's an amusing little Facebook interchange that Green Eagle had yesterday with a wingnut.  It sort of reveals, I think, the difference in intellectual capacity and honesty that left wingers and right wingers bring to an discussion.  I think you will agree.

Third person:  "I'm saying an AR-15 is only good for one thing, and it ain't squirrel huntin'..."

Ignorant right wing asshole:  "I agree, it's mostly good for protection from Tyranny, just like in the Constitution."

Green Eagle:  "The old lie, over and over again, Norman. That is not in any way what the second amendment is about, as revealed in the Federalist Paper remarks of the people who wrote the second amendment. In fact, Alexander Hamilton said that people who believed that were mentally ill. Here, for your information is something on this subject I posted to my blog a couple of weeks ago:

http://largegreenbird.blogspot.com/2012/12/about-that-second-amendment.html  (readers may remember this post of mine from a couple of weeks ago quoting Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, the authors of the second amendment, denying explicitly that the militias it refers to are to defend people against government tyranny.  Check it out if you want.)

Ignorant right wing asshole:   "...with all due respect, your Green Eagle article is the biggest crock of crap that I have ever read. The 2nd Amendment gives each of us our own individual rights to keep and bear arms, period, Live with it because none of us are giving them up."

Green Eagle:  "Norman, apparently the Federalist Papers are a bunch of crap too, even though they were written by the guys who wrote the second amendment; since my article is virtually totally based on what they had to say. If you have any actual disagreement with anything I said, let's hear it. Otherwise, as your remark is a fact-free personal attack, reasonable people will conclude that you are an ignorant ass.  And by the way, can the "with all due respect" bullshit. You have no respect for what I have to say, because you have no respect for what the founding fathers had to say. People like you care nothing about the real meaning of the Constitution; they are like three year olds who care about nothing but what they want that moment, and will say and do anything to get it."

Ignorant right wing asshole:  "Wow, right on schedule. I guess i expected you to act like a jerk, but not so soon. I was respectful to you like i am with anyone else that wants to have a decent conversation, but as usual and on Que, you as always prove my point when I'm discussing the differences between the Left and the Right, you have proven my point once again. Did you hear the one about the United states Supreme Court ruling on the 2nd amendment, it seems that they agree that we as Americans have the Right to Bear Arms for our protection and trust me, we will. Have a wonderful day"

Green Eagle:  "You were respectful to me, when you referred to my blog post, totally backed up with quotes from primary sources, as the biggest crock of crap you have ever read?  Like most Conservatives, you will lie right in the face of the evidence, and because the truth means nothing to you, you don't feel the slightest shred of shame. You have once again failed to present one sliver of argument to demonstrate how my quotations from the Federalist papers, and the lying, made-up pseudo-quotations from right wingers about the founding fathers I mentioned are in any way wrong. Instead, you just trot out the abuse. If I was wrong about what I said, tell me why. Otherwise, let me tell you something. I've been listening to people like you for forty years, and your pathetic personal attacks aren't going to deflect me in any way from presenting the plain truth."

Ignorant right wing asshole:  "There's absolutely no reason for debate, I will never change your mind and you damned sure won't change mine. what is important in the near future will be the actions that Obama takes relating to this subject. Again this is another thing that divides the country and will possibly cause conflict or even Revolution, depending on how far he goes in disarming Americans. We still have to deal with Illegal Aliens and Global Warming, can't wait."

Green Eagle:  "You have once again failed to present one sliver of argument to demonstrate how my quotations from the Federalist papers, and the lying, made-up pseudo-quotations from right wingers about the founding fathers I mentioned are in any way wrong." I know I just said that above, but it is still true. I am not trying to convince you. I'm trying to let Alexander Hamilton and James Madison convince you. What they had to say about the second amendment is utterly clear, and after all, they wrote the thing. You just won't hear it."

Ignorant right wing asshole:  "Like I said, no sense in debating something that neither of us are going to change our mind. Did you check the Supreme court decision that I mentioned earlier ?"

Green Eagle:  "But my opinion is based on facts, and yours is based on right wing lies. I guess you can't see the difference there."

Ignorant right wing asshole:  "Give it up, guess you don't care what the Supreme Court ruled?"

Green Eagle:  "I care what the actual people who wrote the second amendment said. They were perfectly clear about the second amendment, and it was not intended for citizens to protect themselves against a tyrannical government. That is a lie, and it is that lie that I am speaking out against. The Supreme Court ruling you refer to, 128 S.Ct. 2783 (2008) DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA et al., Petitioners, v. Dick Anthony HELLER (I presume,) speaks to an individual right to own arms (and is, by the way, a grotesque act of right wing judicial activism.) The original issue that you brought up was, to quote you, "...it's mostly good for protection from Tyranny, just like in the Constitution." That is a deliberate lie about what the Constitution says; District of Columbia v. Heller has absolutely nothing to do with this issue. In a classic example of right wing refusal to face reality, you simply brought up this decision to muddy the waters, since you can't deal with the clear words of the founding fathers. Now, unless you have something to say regarding the passages from Federalist Papers 28 and 29 written by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison which I quoted, I've got nothing more to say. As an addendum, here is the cite for District of Columbia v. Heller:

http://scholar.google.com/scholar_case?case=2739870581644084946&hl=en&as_sdt=2&as_vis=1&oi=scholarr"

Ignorant right wing asshole:  "You are wrong and NOBODY is taking our guns, NOBODY."

____________________________________________________
Well, facts versus lies, trying to discover the truth versus belligerence and deliberate evasion.  As I said, I've talked to people like this for over forty years, and they never change.  Thank the lord that so many of them are getting old and dying off, and that the younger generations seem to have their heads screwed on so much tighter, because people like this guy are the fuel of Fascism.

Catholic Hypocrisy Knows No Bounds

Well, here's an excerpt from an article at Daily Kos that will make you throw up in the communion plate:

"Turns out, when a man sues a Catholic hospital for malpractice because his wife and the twins she was carrying inside her died when she turned up in the emergency room and her doctor never bothered to answer a page—well, things get a little tricky. Yes, the Catholic hospital adheres to the strict Ethical and Religious Directives of the Catholic Church, as set forth by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. And yes, those directives include the claim that "[t]he Church's defense of life encompasses the unborn" and a mandate to uphold "the sanctity of life 'from the moment of conception until death.'" But come on. That obviously does not apply when Catholic Health Initiatives, the Church-affiliated organization that runs the Church-affiliated St. Thomas More Hospital where a young woman and her two unborn fetuses died, is the lead defendant in a lawsuit:

Instead, they are arguing state law protects doctors from liability concerning unborn fetuses on grounds that those fetuses are not persons with legal rights

Is there ever a point where these people feel the slightest shame about their hypocritical, disgusting lies?  If there is a person on earth that still believes that the Catholic Church has a shred of connection to any sort of morality, this should be the end of that delusion.   The Catholic Church is a gigantic, money making conspiracy- a sort of holy protection racket- and nothing more.

The fact that we are all forced to subsidize their criminal enterprise through their tax breaks is an outrage.  Isn't it time they were treated like the Mafia, or the Crips and Bloods, or other organizations they resemble far more than they resemble a religion?  I'd far rather spend my tax money putting Catholic Priests in prison than in helping to pay their legal judgments when they are caught at their depraved criminality.  And as for their utter bullshit about life beginning at conception, well, I guess we won't be paying much attention to that any time soon.

Change in Israel?

I've written recently about the possibility of a real sea change in attitudes in this country.  I haven't been following internal Israeli politics that much lately, but it looks like things might be changing there too.  Here's a bit from a story at Talking Points Memo:

"...everyone has been operating on the premise that the Israeli polity is locked on the right or center-right and just getting righter.  But the results didn’t bear that out.

Support for the consolidated party of the right, Likud-Beitenu dropped dramatically. And the big picture is that the ‘right’ only seems to have won the barest of majorities according to the early votes — 61 seats. Haaretz currently puts it this way.

Right - 43 seats.
Center-Left - 50 seats.
Ultra-Orthodox - 18 seats.
Arab Parties - 9 seats.

But this looks to be a very brittle coalition. Either one which has a single vote majority or one that puts together parties which just won’t be able to stay in a single coalition for long."

Maybe people in Israel too are getting fed up with the meaningless bluster that is all we ever get from the right.

Readers of Green Eagle may remember me mentioning that I had the opportunity to live for a while in Israel while working on a movie. Here is a little of what I learned:

First of all, like most Americans I habitually thought of the Jewish population of Israel as overwhelmingly made up of European refugees and their descendants.  Actually, before the influx of Russian Jews after the fall of the Soviet Union, the Israeli Jewish population was split about evenly between people of European descent and people who had been forcibly ejected from Arab countries after Israel's independence.  It will be hardly surprising that a large part of these people had a very negative attitude toward Arab governments.  These are the people who made up the bulk of the likud supporters- the great majority of European Jews were liberal, and voted that way.

I remember my first exposure to Netanyahu.  I immediately thought that he reminded me strongly of the jingoistic, self-serving, manipulative politicians that we in this country have come to expect from Republicans.  He seemed immediately familiar to me, but I don't think he was to Israelis.  First of all, Netanyahu represented a real change in Israeli politics.  Before him, virtually all Israeli politicians had participated in the fight for independence, and like our founding fathers, no matter how self serving some of the were, they all had a kind of commitment to the survival of the state which tempered their most extreme self serving instincts.  Israelis before Netanyahu were simply not ready to spot the total moral bankruptcy that we in this country have come to accept as an essential characteristic of right wing politicans.

More importantly, the half of Israeli Jews who were from Arab countries had had no experience whatever with the sort of detritus produced by democratic systems, and were totally incapable of seeing the deep cynicism that was barely papered over by the jingoistic rhetoric these people produced.  They were easy marks for right wing con men, and they fell under the sway of a guy like Netanyahu.

Maybe they are now waking up.  Yes, Netanyahu retains a one seat grip on power, but in the fractious world of Israeli politics that may not last for long.  This would be a great thing for the situation in the Middle East, and by denying American right wingers an ally in Israel, it would be good for us too.  Let's hope that things over there are improving, and lets hope that recent changes in attitude here can produce a better country for us too.

Update:  I see the final results of the Israeli election show Netanyahu with one less seat, meaning an essentially tied Knesset.  Not a perfect election result, but far better than anyone expected.

Guns on Campus, Yeah!

Just in time to give Conservatives a huge boost in the ongoing gun debate, we hear today this story (from Texas- where else?) that indisputably demonstrates that more guns on campus actually make our students so much safer:

"A fight at a Houston college campus today resulted in a shooting that left three people injured and two others in custody, officials said. Three people were injured in the gunfire, which police say stemmed from a fight that broke out between two men on campus...The shooting took place in the center courtyard of the campus between two buildings..."

This dramatic incident proves beyond a shadow of a doubt how much safer all students are when people are allowed to carry guns on campus and, uh...wait a minute...uh...uh...just forget it.  This shooting has absolutely nothing to tell us about guns and is totally meaningless.

...And can I repeat:  It happened in Texas.

A Bit of Good News

A story about reproductive rights that I think has far wider significance:

"Seven in 10 Americans believe Roe v. Wade should stand, according to new data from a Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, as the landmark Supreme Court abortion-rights ruling turns 40 on Tuesday.

That is the highest level of support for the decision, which established a woman's right to an abortion, since polls began tracking it in 1989."

Though I am very happy about the substance of this poll, I want to comment on something else:  There have been few issues in the last half century subject to such an endless, dickish campaign of hatred and lies from the right as the issue of abortion.  It is tremendously reassuring to  me to see that, at this point, the American people seem to no longer be buying into these well-financed delusions.  A new era has possibly dawned, in which money and ruthlessness are no longer enough to lead Americans astray.  I believe we saw this in the recent Presidential election, and here is another sign of it.

I'm not ready to declare victory yet, because we all know that no defeat, no proof of the idiocy or malice of their behavior, will convince right wingers to think twice about their behavior.  There is a hope, however, that they simply aren't creating many crazy people any more; that the horrible prospects that right wing ideology has left young people have forced them to confront reality in a way that many baby boomers and the Reagan generation never did.  Maybe there is some real hope that the United States is ready to move out of the self-constructed wilderness in which it has wandered the last forty years, and once again enter the land that our founders promised us.

Wingnut Wrapup

Right wing blogs- the gift that keeps on taking:

Jonah Goldberg, Town Hall:  "It's hard for a lot of people, particularly on the right, to recognize that the conservative movement's problems are mostly problems of success."

Success at destroying the economy.

Michael Walsh, PJ Media:  "That Texas Republican who's threatening legislation to jail any gun-grabbin' federales in the Lone Star State actually has history on his side."

Let him give jailing the federales a try and see what history has in store for him.

Michael Barone, Town Hall:  "To judge from his surly demeanor and defiant words at his press conference on Monday, Barack Obama begins his second term with a strategy to defeat and humiliate Republicans rather than a strategy to govern."

And here's his strategy to defeat and humiliate Republicans:  tell the American people what they really believe.  And, it's working.  Sorry about that, Michael.

Paul R. Greenberg, Town Hall:  "They introduce themselves politely in restaurants or diners, in a movie lobby or at some civic event, even in front of the Little Rock gate in Atlanta, which has become a kind of Arkansas crossroads. ("You don't know me, but . . .") Then they thank me for remembering Robert E. Lee every January 19th with a column on his birthday."

They are the racist haters among us.  I'm sure you are really proud, Paul, of receiving their thanks for keeping alive the memory of the terrorist commander whose fanatics killed more Americans than anyone else in history.

Wes Vernon, Renew America:  "Stalin's secret agents: why their deeds still matter in the 21st century"

Because Republican lunatics have run out of wacko conspiracy theories involving anything that happened less than seventy years ago?

Jen Schroeder, Renew America:  "Gun Rights: When do we pick up arms and fight?"

Right now, Jen.  Do it.  I'm really excited to find out how that works out for you.  After all of your blabbing over the years, let's see how effective a pack of lunatics with assault rifles really is against the armed forces.  That should make for a really good reality show- Here Come the Adult Honey Boo Boos- And This Time They're Really Angry.

For a sample of how idiotic this all is, let's let Jen continue with her "reasoning:"

"God told us through the prophets what is to come that we would believe and many of us have recognized the slow turn of the wheels which have begun. I believe we are being divided by the angels as they separate the wheat from the tares or weeds, indeed as they bundle the weeds for burning...Did you wonder how we all seem to be so blind and deaf to each other's point of view, wonder how the other side cannot see what is obvious? I contend, this is why! They are being blinded as their time runs out, the separation is becoming distinct, depraved minds are falling deeper into their own depravity and they can't even comprehend they are falling."

We cannot see what is obvious?  Wrong, Jen.  We can see what is obvious:  that you are a deeply ignorant person who can't come up with a single rational reason for the rest of us to give in to your idiotic demands, so you hallucinate the notion that you are doing it because God told you to do it.  And the rest of us are just so stupid and evil that we can't understand that the whole world exists to do what Jen Schroeder wants.

Before It's News:  "Death Platforms Appear In Sky"

Oh my God, they broke the bullshit meter.  Here's a picture of a death platform, from which, apparently, Obama intends to rain down destruction on somebody:

When I first read this, I thought it was about those famous death panels.  Whatever; anyone who can't see in a second that the "death platform" was added to this picture has obviously never spent five minutes with photoshop.  This picture brought to you by the same people responsible for "SANDY HOOK HOAX BLOWN TO PIECES - THE ACTORS, PUPPETS AND MOTIVES - GUN CONTROL AGENDA SCAM" and "Martians Discovered In Siberian Permafrost."  I give thelast story more chance of turning out to be true than the ones about Sandy Hook and the death platforms.

Katie Pavlich, Town Hall:  "Obama Launches Major Alinsky-Style Community Organizing Project From the White House"

Alinsky.  My diagnosis: either this was written by a fellow parrot, or by someone suffering from Tourette's syndrome.  Poor Katy.  So sad to turn yourself into a maundering geezer by the time you are 22.

Oliver North, Town Hall:  "Guns"

Why don't you write an article entitled "drug dealing," Ollie?  After your years as assistant to the head of CIA front Air America, the world's largest importer of illegal heroin in its day, it's probably something you know more about.

Linda Chavez, Town Hall:  "The Speech President Obama Should Give"

And it would be really short, too, according to Linda:  "Fuck the poor."  Linda, we learn from the article, is " chairman of the Center for Equal Opportunity."  Equal opportunity for rich guys to rob the rest of us blind, I guess.

David Mitchell, Town Hall:  "Obama Goes Oh-23-3...A winless record is usually a good indication of a team that doesn’t know what it’s doing and is in over its head."

Funny, I seem to remember a win.  When was it now?  Oh yeah, last November 6th.  I guess you forgot that one, David.

Anna Higgins, Town Hall:  "A Pro-Life Reminder for Planned Parenthood: Don’t Mess With Texas"

Or as they used to say, "Planned Parenthood, never underestimate the enemy's ability to be bigger assholes than was previously believed humanly possible."  And as for Anna:

"Anna Higgins, J.D., is director of the Center for Human Dignity"

Human dignity.  That's like making Joseph Goebbels the director of the Center for Telling the Truth.  No, wait...that's giving Anna way too much credit.  Joseph Goebbels was one of the most malignant liars in world history.  Anna is just one more garden variety right wing jerk, saying what she gets paid to say.  And don't forget, there's a really good chance that Goebbels actually believed a lot of what he said.  No question of that with Anna.  She's in it for the money.

Ann Coulter, Town Hall:  "Guns Don't Kill People, the Mentally Ill Do"

A lot of the mentally ill spend their time writing right wing political columns, too, Ann.

Andrew Roth, Red State:  "Would You Knowingly Let a Thief into Your Home? How much sympathy would you garner from your friends if a thief stole everything you owned after you knowingly invited him into your home?  That’s what House conservatives do when they support “the rule” on bad pieces of legislation."

I.e. House Conservatives have betrayed the country whenever they do not do everything they can to make the government even more dysfunctional than it already is.  Well, here is the only rational comment about letting a burglar into your home:

At least a burglar isn't an encyclopedia salesman.  Or a Republican, who would probably try to get you to pay for the Encyclopedia of Lies.

Daniel Horowitz, Red State:  "Will Red State Democrats Abjure Their Principles With the Filibuster?"

Republicans staking out the high ground:  they don't have to worry about abjuring their principles, seeing as how they don't have any.

And now, more from Steve Stockman, the current odds on favorite to replace Michelle Bachmann as the dumbest and most malicious person in Congress:

"The Texan believes it is time for conservatives in the House to embrace the principles that “made us great.” He plans to introduce a bill to cut taxes across the board.  “And it will be called the Kennedy Clinton Act"

Listen, Steve, why not introduce a bill to make child sex abuse legal and call it the Obama Biden act?  How about introducing a bill to relegalize slavery and call it the Abraham Lincoln act?  Or a bill to dissolve the Federal government altogether, and call it the George Washington Thomas Jefferson act?

The sad thing is, I predict Steve Stockman will get around to introducing at least one of these bills before Texas voters come to their senses and kick him out of Congress for the second time.

Alan Keyes, World Net Daily:  "The 'natural born' need not apply...To those of us determined to preserve that idea, nature matters. It matters because it reflects the benevolent rule endowed by the Creator God. People whose hearts take to this rule are natural born Americans, by an inheritance of the spirit no one can strip away. People who reject it are not and can never be true Americans, no matter the prestigious stack of Bibles on which they falsely swear to uphold the way of life they are out to destroy. Thanks to the fatal corruption of the present sham party system, the natural born citizens of the United States must these days do without representation, under leaders imposed by specious ethnic birthright in a scheme that takes account of every claim of birth except the one the Constitution preserves."

Oh, I see now...You are a natural born citizen if you are willing to pander to the most ignorant and stupid people in the country; you are not a natural born citizen if you are a Democrat.  That's what it says in a part of the Constitution written in invisible ink that can only be read by jerks.  Well, that clears up that issue.  Thanks so much, Alan.

Town Hall:  "Democrats Prepare Big Inauguration Weekend Festivities"

Because only Democrats see anything to be happy about when, as the Founding Fathers intended, our national institutions continue to produce elected leaders.  Well, here's one right wing raving I agree with.

Town Hall:  "Justin Bieber's Mother Produces Anti-Abortion Film"

Justin Bieber's mother?  Maybe she should rethink the issue of abortion.

Bryan Fischer, Renew America:  "Darwinians have no explanation for origin of life; we do...NBC News breathlessly headlines a piece on its website today, "Theorists are pumped up about their new origin of life proposal."

What does this headline prove? That scientists still to this day have no earthly idea how life got here. None. Zip. Nada. All they have are fanciful theories."

Whereas, Bryan, you have a patently ridiculous myth, and a two thousand year history of being willing to kill anyone who disagrees with it.  Here's something you might want to think about:  Evolutionary theory is about how life evolved, not how it originated, or we would have called it origination or something.  You might as well dismiss evolution for not explaining why the sky looks blue.

Of course, all of the above relies for its relevance on the assumption that jerks like Bryan Fischer give a damn about what is true or false, instead of just being out to batter people into giving up and letting them have their stupid, vicious way.

Kevin Fobbs, Renew America:  "Will you support your state and sheriff that defy Obama Gun Control Orders"

Only if you are a traitor.

Lloyd Marcus, Renew America:  "Obama despicably using kids to undermine the Second Amendment via executive order is a perfect example of why the Tea Party can not go away."

Too late, Lloyd.  The tea party went away the second the Koch brothers stopped paying for it.

Lloyd is a particularly sorry sight- a man who sold his soul to serve people who hate him and his kind, and is now desperately trying to pretend that these people (as illustrated in his article) give a damn about him:

Notice anything?  Nobody who looks like Lloyd:

Anyway, here's something else Lloyd had to say today:

"Even now, folks on our side are still beating up on Sarah Palin, saying Palin has lost her appeal -- Palin is unelectable -- Palin wasn't smart enough -- Palin wasn't prepared, etc.  So this is how we treat our heroes."

So, that's how we treat our "heroes-"  by telling the truth about them.  How dare we?

Laurie Roth, Renew America:  "2nd Installment--War against mental and physical health industry"

I don't know about the mental health industry, but I think otherwise Laurie is really on to something here- as is usual, Obama gun regulation is a JOB KILLER!!!  -Jobs for emergency room doctors.

Star Parker, World Net Daily:  "Could Dr. King have given inaugural benediction?  Famed pastor also would have been 'pushed off the stage' as a bigot"

You know what?  Any right wing loon who uses Martin Luther King to try to make a point should be punched in the face. Anyone out there have a problem with that?

Russ Vaughan, American Thinker:  "Should the Second Amendment Have Been the First? Without the implied protection of force of arms, every other article in the Bill of Rights amounts to so much wishful thinking -- mere ink upon paper."

Notice the phrase "implied protection of force of arms."  That's because neither Russ nor any other right wing Jackass on earth can come up with an example in our 240 year history when real force of arms against the government ever protected a single one of our rights (other, of course, than temporarily protecting our right to own other people.)  On the other hand, force of arms did result in lots of dead people at their great triumphant acts of resistance to tyranny at Waco and Ruby Ridge.  Looking on the bright side, I guess if they want to kill themselves in supreme acts of idiocy, that's their choice, I guess.

Rick Moran, American Thinker:  "Poll: NRA more popular than Obama"

This would be a poll from Gallup, which also said that Romney was going to crush Obama, and ended up the worst performing polling group in the 2012 election.  Right now, the NRA is about as popular as cockroaches.  If you don't believe that, Rick, you need to get a life.

Breitbart:  "2016 Preview: Rand Paul Rips Christie for NRA Bluster"

Rand Paul versus Chris Christie?  Let me give you an analogy to help you understand what that will be like:  First, Rand Paul gets to sit on Chris Christie, then Chris Christie gets to sit on Rand Paul.  That's how a contest between those two will work out.  Say, that reminds me...did you ever hear the story of the lion and the rabbit?  Oh, wait...forget it.  Green Eagle is a family blog, after all.

A Victory For Guns

Yesterday was National Gun Appreciation day, during which only five people were shot at gun shows, none fatally.

Hoorah!

A Comment on the Great Obama-Hitler Delusion

Note: the following is something I wrote about six months after Obama took office, during a previous flareup of Obama-Hitler baiting from the right.  I think it's worth reprinting at this point.

Of all the blithering idiocies that make up the black-is-white phony reality of the right, none is more bizarre than the currently popular delusion that the Nazis were actually liberals. In support of this malicious distortion, conservative spokesmen have taken to openly comparing the behavior of the Obama administration to the first few months of another government- that of Adolf Hitler.

This absolutely ludicrous assertion would, in a sane world, not receive a minute's credibility. Yet, it has been popping up over and over again in the wingnuttosphere, and apparently there is a pool of lunatics willing to accept it as true.

Now, although a lot of people know quite a bit about World War II, very few seem to have much concrete information about the early years of Nazi rule. This certainly helps conservatives in spreading their lies. I thought I would take a look at what the Nazis got up to in their first six months after Hitler became Reichschancellor, to see how much they really resembled the Obama administration.

Hitler took power, not by election, as many conservatives claim, but through right wing political manipulation, on January 30th, 1933. At that point, the Nazis had never held a majority in the legislature, the Reichstag. Almost immediately, Hitler forced the German government into dissolving the Reichstag and calling for new elections on March 5, 1933.

In the campaign, the Nazis received massive contributions from large industrialists, and were able to use the entire state apparatus as a campaign tool. In return for the money from the industrialists, Hitler promised them that he would destroy independent labor unions.

As William Shirer (who was there at the time) reports, by the beginning of February, all communist meetings had been banned, and the communist press had been shut down. Social Democratic rallies were forbidden or attacked by S.S. thugs. Socialist newspapers were continually "suspended." Even centrist leaders were beaten and threatened. Shirer counts 51 opposition leaders murdered by the Nazis during the campaign.

Hundreds of officials belonging to other parties were forced from their positions, and replaced by Nazis. Goehring, as minister of the interior for Prussia, and therefore head of the police of 60% of Germany, called for shooting down political opponents of the Nazi party. He appointed an "auxiliary" police force including 40,000 SS thugs and Steel Helmets (their close allies) to harass other political parties.

Still, the Nazis were unable to provoke the communists and the Social Democrats into the violent confrontation that they wanted, as an excuse to do away with them once and for all.

Then, on February 27, 1933, the Reichstag, the German parliament building burned down. In response to this, which Hitler of course blamed on the communists, he managed to get the senile President Hindenburg to agree to a declaration allowing Hitler to do away with German laws respecting free expression, freedom of the press, and rights of assembly, and also doing away with laws requiring government to honor privacy of all communications, or to have warrants for searches and orders for confiscation.

As horrible as this is, this decree also allowed Hitler to do something even more shocking- to take over the complete power of the states that made up Germany.

The election took place in an atmosphere of terror.  Leftist parties were forbidden to campaign or circulate election material, and saw their rallies attacked by SS thugs. As many as 8,000 communist and Social Democrat leaders were detained before the election. On the other hand, all of Germany saw huge Nazi rallies, paid for by the government and industrialists.

Even with all of this, the Nazis failed in this election to achieve a majority, getting only 44% of the popular vote. The communists, despite all of the oppression, still polled 4.8 million votes, while the Social Democrats hardly dropped at all in their support.

Now came the next step. By the simple expedient of "arresting" a sufficient number of communist and Social Democratic legislators, Hitler managed to assemble a 2/3 "majority" of the Reichstag, to pass an act giving total power to Hitler- the so-called "enabling act," which bore the cynical name of "the Law for the Removing of the Distress of the People and the Reich." This granted power to Hitler to act in the place of the legislature for four years, and made the Reichstag totally powerless. It also gave him the right to enact laws that "might deviate from the constitution."

Germany under the Nazis never saw another real election.

The enabling act was passed with no one but Social Democrats voting against it (the communists were all gone.)

In one week in March, the governments of the German states were thrown out by Nazi thugs, and replaced by Nazis. On March 31, Hitler forcibly dissolved all of the state legislatures. On April 7, he appointed Nazis as the heads of every state, with the power to appoint and remove all state employees, including judges. (in January, 1934, Hitler officially transferred all powers of the states to the Reich, effectively dissolving them.)

On May 2, 1933, unions throughout Germany were destroyed, their money seized and their leaders thrown in jail. A few weeks later, Hitler eliminated the right of workers to collective bargaining. Hitler also excluded Jews from public service and all professions. On April 1, he declared a national boycott of Jewish businesses.

In June, 1933, the Nazis' biggest ally, the National party, was attacked, and went the way of all other parties, "agreeing" to "voluntarily" dissolve. Finally, on July 14, 1933, Hitler issued a proclamation making the Nazis the only political party in Germany.

Well, there you have it. This brings you up to about six months after Hitler took office...The result: no legislature, no states, no political parties, no constitution, no unions, no elections, no freedom of assembly, no freedom of the press, total warrantless police power, thousands arrested without cause, hundreds murdered by SS thugs.

Just like Obama, huh?

Note: I am very indebted to William Shirer and Richard J. Evans for the material above. A blog is not a scholarly paper, so I have not footnoted things, but I couldn't have written this without their work.
I have taken the liberty of illustrating this piece with a few illustrations that I found in about five minutes on the web. I must say, I particularly like the one where Obama is smoking. He looks like a cross between Hitler and Cab Calloway.

There Are Two Of Them!

Long time readers of Green Eagle (both of them) may sometimes wonder whatever became of our beloved Orly Taitz, the Queen of the Birthers.  Orly has sort of lost the limelight due to the presence of Celebrity Birthers like the inimitable Donald Trump, the Stupidest Rich Guy on Earth (well, except for George W. Bush, of course.)  Well, Orly's obscurity the last couple of years is certainly not due to a lack of effort on her part.  She still holds the prize as the most deluded birther on earth, thanks to things like the following, an excerpt from her latest monumentally stupid, rejected court filing, which is absolutely breathtaking in its audacity:

"Additionally, widely published picture by Dr. Scott Inoue, Obama's former classmate, shows Barack Obama as a third grade student in Hawaii in 1969. At the same time official Obama school records show him in Indonesia in 1967-1969 attending school in Jakarta Indonesia under the name Barry Soetoro. It means that from January 1, 1967 till 1969 we could see two distinct individuals: Barry Obama residing in Hawaii and Barry Soetoro residing in Indonesia. We do not know, which one of them came back to the U.S. in 1971. Recorded interview and recollection of Lia Soetoro Sabah, foster daughter of Ann Dunham and her second husband, Obama’s stepfather Lolo Soetoro, confirms the recollection by Scott Inoue. (Liah Soetoro Sabah died suddenly at the age of 52 before Obama’s scheduled visit to Indonesia) If Barry Soetoro came back, than the question is, what happened to Barry Obama? Is he even alive? A number of high ranking officials of the U.S. Government and the government of Hawaii are complicit in the most egregious crimes, cover up of the forgery, however it might be more than fraud and forgery. If Barry Soetoro came from Indonesia instead of Barry Obama, this is espionage."

Yes, you read that right (at least, if you were foolish enough to spend your time actually reading the above.)  According to Orly, there are actually two Barack Obamas, and one of them is an Indonesian spy, substituted for the real Barack Obama when he was eight or ten years old, at which age the perpetrators of this plot felt it was worth the effort on the assumption that they could make this half black foreign kid the President of the United States.

Come on, you have to admit that this is the grand champion of all birther delusions in the entire history of birtherism, and is one of the most preposterous conspiracy theories in the history of the world.  Orly, you are still the queen.

Still the one after all these years!

Let The Games Begin

Before President Obama has even been sworn in for his second term, there are already promises from Jackasses Republicans to impeach him.  In particular, a couple revolve around throwing him out of office if he dares to issue any sort of "executive order" (i.e. telling the people who work for him to do their jobs) about guns.

Well, today, Obama issued twenty three of those dreaded executive orders.  In particular, Freshman Texas Representative Steve Stockman and perennial jerk Louie Gohmert (also from Texas- what a surprise, huh?) have promised to introduce bills of impeachment for this.

Well, come on, guys- put up or shut up.  Let's see you try to impeach Obama right now, or else you will be forever known as lying wimps with an emotional age of about three.  Keep your word, or go away for ever.

Man, the next few weeks are going to see some really pathetic behavior.

Update:  I'm sorry for being so unclear. Louie Gohmert is already known as a lying wimp with an emotional age of three.  I hope this clears things up.  Sorry for the counfusion.

Justice Speaks

Earth shaking news:  Last week, Supreme Court Justice Clarence "Dim Bulb" Thomas broke a seven year (!) self imposed silence on the bench to utter the following words of wisdom:

“Well — he did not — .”

I must say, I spent far longer than I usually do trying to come up with a sarcastic remark appropriate to this news, but I totally failed.  This man is an embarrassment to the United States, and the Republican President who put him there should be deeply ashamed of his misuse of the sacred responsibility given to him to select our Supreme Court Justices.  There is nothing in any way funny about this stupid, ignorant, corrupt man sitting on the Supreme Court, nor is there anything to laugh about in the damage that he and his more articulate but equally corrupt fellow conservatives on the court have done, and continue to do, to this country.

Wingnut Wrapup

It's that time again!  Time for Green Eagle to drive you half crazy with an orgy of meaningless screeching!  I mean, what else are parrots for, right?  At least Green Eagle is polite enough to let other do the screeching for him.  So, here goes:

First the award for over the top Rhetoric of the Week:

Kevin Fobbs, Renew America:  "The nation that was represented as a symbolic shining city on a hill that President Ronald Reagan spoke about over 30 years ago is now becoming a broken mud hole of shattered dreams. America's morning that has dawned over the nation is now bearing witness to the shredding of constitutional protections which have safe guarded families since the infancy of the republic. Obama has given the order to Vice President Biden: full steam ahead to obliterate gun rights in your town. You and your family are the targets and what will you do?"

What a bunch of twaddle.  Never forget, it was Reagan and Bush that turned our shining city into a mud puddle, and as usual, Democrats have to fix the damage, while Republicans stand on the sidelines and tell their lies.  Kevin goes on to "quote" John Hancock:

"for a well-regulated militia of the whole people who would fight "for their liberty, and for themselves, and for their God."

Do I need to even state that there is not a shred of evidence that John Hancock ever said this?  In fact, the only mentions of it I could find on Google led right back to Kevin's article.  As far as I have been able to tell, Kevin invented it himself.  Never mind, it has already been picked up by wingnuts, who of course don't give a damn about the truth, and it is in the process of being spread far and wide, like the right wing lies that Hitler imposed gun control, or that the second amendment is about defending ourselves against the government.  On the other hand, here is something Hancock did say, in a speech delivered on March 5, 1774 in Boston:

"From a well-regulated militia we have nothing to fear; their interest is the same with that of the State."

Their interest is the same with that of the State. Hmm. Doesn't really sound like Hancock was that much into using the militias against the government.   And while we're at it, here is a bonus quote from that speech:

"...people who pay greater respect to a wealthy villain than to an honest, upright man in poverty, almost deserve to be enslaved; they plainly show that wealth, however it may be acquired, is, in their esteem, to be preferred to virtue."
Sound like any particular party you can think of?

Now, some problems that we don't really need to deal with:

Michelle Malkin, Town Hall:  "From New York to New Mexico and across the dependent plains, welfare recipients are getting sauced on the public dime. Drunk, besotted, bombed. But while politicians pay lip service to cutting government waste, fraud and abuse, they're doing very little in practice to stop the EBT party excesses. Where's the compassion for taxpayers?"

All of which doesn't add up to the cost of one unneeded f-22, let alone all of the dozens of useless ships that the Romney administration was planning to build.  Way to focus on the real budget problems, Michelle.  What a vicious, hate-filled pig.

Cute girl, Republican Style

Weasel Zippers:  "Obama Campaign Staffers Left Unemployed And Without Health Insurance"

Because he obviously had a responsibility to take care of them for the rest of their lives. I mean, if there is one thing right wingers stand for, it's taking care of people with no jobs, right? Funny, wingnuts don't care when Republicans leave the whole country unemployed and without health insurance.

Mark Davis, Town Hall:  "You Can't Call a Pretty Girl Pretty; What Kind of Country Are We Becoming?"

Our most pressing issue- something someone said at a football game.  Mark isn't interested in what kind of country we are becoming when we let a President torture people and start an illegal war in which hundreds of thousands were killed, without throwing him in jail for the rest of his life.  No, that isn't really worth thinking about.  But someone who didn't like something a football announcer said- why, that threatens our whole republic!

Mona Charen, Town Hall:  "I am utterly uninspired by first women astronauts or Secretaries of State. It is of no consequence to me what percentage of the United States Senate or House of Representatives shares my chromosomes. I don't wait with gnawing impatience for America to pass the milestone of needing a fellow to fill the post of First Gentleman."

And why would Mona feel this way?

"Suzanna Martinez was terrific at the Republican Convention. Nikki Haley seems very solid. But let's face it, most women in politics are liberals, and women voters tend to prefer Democrats."

Aah, now the picture is getting clearer.  Suzanna Martinez and Nikki Haley- terrific.  Hillary Clinton, our two female Supreme Court Justices, Nancy Pelosi- no mention of them.  Because it's impossible to be terrific and a Democrat at the same time.

Oliver North, Town Hall:  "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.  Full disclosure right upfront: I'm a proud life member of the National Rifle Association. I am on the NRA's board of directors and serve as chairman of the organization's Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee."

Well, that's all we need to hear from you, Ollie, you treasonous, drug dealing son of a bitch.  Thanks for admitting in advance that you are a paid stooge of the NRA, and saving us the trouble of reading any farther.

Brian Sikma, Red State:  "Obama EPA Forces Company to Cut Jobs, Spend $6 million on Green Agenda"

Translation into English:  "Obama EPA forces company to stop giving people cancer."  Doesn't sound so bad now, does it?

John Hayward, Human Events:  "NRA unimpressed with White House outreach effort"

Who cares?

Michael Walsh, PJ Media:  "Yesterday, as the day before and the day before that, there was no sign of any GOP leader anywhere, on the nominations, on the “executive order” on guns, on the key nominations. No appearances. No statements. Just crickets.  Those crickets would be the American people, just itching for a fight with Obama and the Democrats but finding no one to lead them."

Right, Michael.  The American people, who just soundly reelected Obama, are just "itching" to pick a fight with him.  Keep believing your own lies, guy.  I can't wait for 2014.  This jackass continues:

"...it’s not because we lost — it’s because we didn’t fight. Didn’t pay the slightest attention to Churchill:

"We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

Instead, somebody named Willard Mitt Romney pretended to run for president"

Well, thanks for setting us straight on that one, Michael.  Romney only pretended to run, and the Republicans didn't fight anyone on the beaches.  Michael, listen, you ass:  Churchill wasn't speaking figuratively when he said that, he was talking literally about a real invasion, with lots of soldiers, from the most evil government in world history.  Obama did not make himself just like Hitler by winning the 2012 election, he made himself more like George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, who also were actually elected.   So, here's a friendly suggestion for you, Michael: rot in hell.

Bryan Preston, PJ Media:  "Recasting History: Scholarly Study Finds that Race, Class, and Gender Studies Crowd Up University American History Classes"

History classes that could otherwise be filled with the story of heroic white males saving the world from ignorant brown savages, over and over again.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "HUNDREDS OF TEXANS Rally For Independence at State Capitol in Austin"

And here they are:

Good luck with that, guys.  Looks like you have some real momentum there, yes sir.  Get back to us in a few years and let us know how things worked out for you.

Mark Levin: "I Can Barely Contain My Fury At What Is Going On... I'm just being honest with you. I can barely contain it. I'm so frustrated by this tyranny, you have no idea."

So fucking what, Mark?

Austin Hill, Town Hall:  "Some Venezuelans are concerned that their President might be violating their nation’s Constitution."

Oh my God, who are these "some" Venezuelans and what dastardly violation of the Venezuelan constitution is Chavez up to?  Making himself dictator for life?  Ordering the military to kill his opponents?  Stealing all the money?

"In a hastily arranged press conference, the leadership of the Venezuelan Catholic Church announced that delaying President Hugo Chavez' inauguration would be a "morally unacceptable" violation of their national constitution. According to the Venezuelan constitution, Chavez’ term in office was to have officially ended on January 10th, whereupon he would have been sworn in to his next (and fourth) term in office.  However, Chavez has been ill with cancer for the past 18 months or so... Why are other constitutionally elected officials in the Venezuelan government so beholden to Chavez, and so ambivalent about their nation’s laws?"

The law that Chavez must be sworn in on a specific date is written in stone by the lord God, apparently.  The law that he gets to be President because of his landslide victory in an internationally observed fair election- well, that's not so important.  Just ask Catholic leaders- a group famous for their strict moral standards.  Well, here's one more piece of right wing cant from this idiot:

"After taking office, he claimed that he had “inherited” the worst economic situation in his country’s recent history (sound familiar?)."

Yeah, it sounds familiar, jerk.  If you're talking about Barack Obama, it sounds familiar because it's true.  Time to take your head out of the sand and deal with reality, buddy.

Star Parker, Town Hall:  "Roe v Wade, Forty Years After...The number forty has great significance in the Bible."

And one more article we don't need to read.

John Ransom, Town Hall:  "So Fake It’s Real: Global Warming is Reality TV for the Media Elite "

They'll never give up.  Not because they believe what they are saying, mind you.  No, it's because they get paid by crooked oil companies to say things like this.  Just one statistic here:  13,000 to 24.  That's the number of peer reviewed articles that support man-made global warming versus the number that don't.  Or, 99.84%.  Not enough for liars like John to quit spreading their malignant propaganda.

Katie Kiefer, Town Hall:  "Guns and Love...Guns, guns, guns. Love, love, love. America needs guns and love."

Man, they really are hiring infants these days to push their crap.

Matt Barbour, Town Hall:  "Civil War’s A-Brewin’...This might be a good time for me to add that no one’s taking my guns. Period. And if Dianne Feinstein orders me from her lofty perch on the left-coast to retroactively register them with some federal autocracy, I think I might just forget I even have them. Tens of millions of law-abiding, God-fearing Americans just like me and Dad, I suspect, feel the same way."

Civil war, blah, blah, blah.  Don't they ever get sick of this crap?  And by the way, Matt, didn't it ever occur to you that if the government passes a law and tens of millions of people refuse to comply with it, you can't exactly call them "law-abiding?"  No, right wingers only have to obey the laws they agree with.  After all, they answer to a higher authority- greed.

Newsmax:  "McCain Won't Block Hagel Nomination"

WHAT? And miss a chance to be an asshole?  I'll believe that when I see it.

John Ransome, Town Hall:  "It’s not just that our emperors have no pants, it’s that they don’t want pants and it never occurs to them to wear any. Pants just make raping hotel maids- and the taxpayers- a tad more difficult as we lie back and think of England."

Huh?

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "“Obama Phone” Lady Says She’s Darn Sure She Won’t Vote For Obama Again"

I guess not.  He can't run again.  Figure it out, Jim.

William R. Mann, Renew America:  "Now we know what destroyed Detroit-Just like I discussed in my last article, Democrat Bolshevism, if you want a peek at where Obama and his Marxist crew are taking us, then look at what happened to Detroit. It is a case study. This will happen to the rest of the USA over time if these people and their ideas prevail. Detroit is an example of what Socialism and Communism do best: depreciate, dismantle, destroy, defeat, and demoralize. Almost an entire once great city ... now it lies in ruins."

And here I thought it was when their rich corporate overlords moved all their jobs overseas.  Shows what an idiot I am.  I should have known that it was Bolshevist Democrats.  How could I have been so wrong?

Pam Geller, American Thinker:  "New York Times Declares Victory in Feminism's War on Love and Romance...Men-hating parasites have ruined the glorious exaltation of women in 20th-century America."

Right, Pam.  Well, this makes a delightful change from your usual foaming-at-the-mouth Islam bashing, but still, you don't add up to much but a target for cheap laughs.

Todd Beamon, Newsmax:  "Former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III declared in an exclusive Newsmax TV interview that President Barack Obama could easily be impeached if he bypassed Congress and enacted gun-control legislation by executive order."

Ed Meese.  Well, I guess it takes one to know one.  Todd forgot to mention that Ed Meese was driven out of office because of a corruption scandal.    Great authority on constitutional law, huh?  Of course, he's right in a way- Republicans intend to find a way to "impeach" Obama over something, and it could just as well be this.

Enough for today, huh?  More than enough.  But it keeps on coming.  Back with more, real soon.

Confiscation

There are three hundred million guns in the United States.  This situation exists for one reason only- the craven capitulation of our leaders to the NRA and its endless, well financed campaign of bullying.  If political leaders had stood up to this disgusting group and its big-money backers in the sixties or seventies, much of this problem would not exist today.

Stripped of the bullshit surrounding this problem, here's the simple truth:  The endless gun violence that plagues our country will never be brought under control until a large percentage of these guns are removed from society.  Obviously, the gun owners we need to worry about are not going to voluntarily relinquish their weapons, whether they are political lunatics or just garden variety criminals.

The only hope we have of dealing with this is for the government to start a serious, widespread program of forcible gun confiscation, which will have to last decades in order to repair the damage done by fifty years of capitulation to the will of gun manufacturers.  No matter how unpopular this idea is in certain circles, it is the only answer.  Gun nuts have brought this fate upon themselves by their endless abuse of second amendment rights, and if we are going to see an end to this problem, their guns need to be pried from their hands, cold and dead or otherwise.  The right of the rest of us to live in safety is more important than their endless delusions about the meaning of the right to bear arms.

Is this ignorant, brain dead maniac's right to lie about the second amendment really more important than your right to live?

The Medical Care Issue In a Sentence

From a recent article in the New York Times:

"One study found that patients’ mortality rates spiked when nonprofit hospitals switched to become profit-making"

I don't think you really need to know much more than that to get what is going on in our country.  Time was (you know, back a few decades ago, before Saint Ronnie came along and greed became the great American value) when the health care system in this country was intended to help sick people get better.  No more.  It's all about a few hundred CEO's getting ungodly rich, and to hell with everyone else.  And if you think things are different in any other big business in this country, you're living in a world of delusion.

It's us versus them, guys.  The days when what was good for GM was good for the country (if they ever existed) are long gone.  Today, what's good for the corporations of the world is bad for the rest of us.  We are never going to be able to find our way out of an endless repetition of the 2008 financial mess until we understand that, and start to treat corporations and the people who run them as far bigger enemies than Al Qaida could ever hope to be.

Gun Defense in Action

With guns being used these days to kill little kids and all, people on the right have been hunting for stories of folks who used their God-given right to defend themselves with a lethal weapon, to argue that we should just be allowed to pack any kind of heat we want.  Well, in a spirit of bipartisanship, Green Eagle would like to bring you the inspiring story of a champion of gun rights and her experience.

This is the story of Melanie Hain.  You may not remember her name (Green Eagle certainly didn't) but you may vaguely remember her story.  A couple of years ago, when walking around with guns in public was all the rage among the wingnuts, Melanie made the national news for packing a pistol at her child's soccer game.  Here she is, and quite a sight too:

Well, I wouldn't mess with this mama.  She's out to protect herself, and if you bug her, watch out, right?  She's armed and dangerous.

So, it's about time that we checked in with Melanie and found out how that self-protection thing is working out for her...

...Oh dear:

"Gun-toting soccer mom found shot dead

A mother of three who became a voice of the gun-rights movement when she openly carried a loaded pistol to her daughter's soccer game was fatally shot along with her husband, a parole officer and former prison guard, in an apparent murder-suicide at their home.

The couple's 10-year-old son and daughters ages 2 and 6 were home at the time, police said. The two older children ran outside and told neighbors that their father had shot their mother, neighbors said.

Neighbor Aileen Fortna, 51, said that her husband noticed the two older Hain children running past their house and crying. She said the children told another neighbor that "daddy shot mommy."

Meleanie Hain always carried her holstered 9mm Glock pistol, even to the grocery store, and was holding a rifle while she talked to someone outside her house last week, Fortna said.

"I'm shocked at the whole thing," Fortna said. "I'm surprised she didn't defend herself."

She didn't defend herself.  Turns out it's not so easy.

I'm so glad that her years of gun toting really worked out for her when she needed the experience.  Excuse me for not showing a shred of sympathy, but "live by the Glock, die by the Glock."

Moonbeam Delivers the Goods

California's current governor, Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown, derided for decades by Republicans as a loony liberal crackpot, has accomplished a feat that no one believed possible:

"For the first time in five years, California is not facing a deficit as Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers work to put together a spending plan for the next fiscal year.  Brown released his budget Thursday morning for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, proposing a $97.7 billion plan that is 5 percent higher than the current year's spending.

California today is poised to achieve something that has eluded us for more than a decade - a budget that lives within its means, now and for many years to come," the governor wrote in his budget message to the Legislature, saying voters made this possible by approving Proposition 30."

One more nail in the coffin of the great right wing lie that Republicans are the fiscally responsible party and Democrats are a bunch of spendthrift wastrels.  And another nail in the coffin that divided government is superior to one party rule- at least when the party is the Democrats.  (One party Republican rule gives us depressions, in case you have forgotten.)

Compare this to that bastion of Republican prudence, Texas:

"Texas Governor Rick Perry treated guests to a barbecue lunch paid for by a wealthy businessman. Supporters of California Governor Jerry Brown munched on hot dogs at a union-sponsored picnic.

The stark contrast in inaugural menus last month highlights the different approaches the two most populous U.S. states are taking to deal with massive budget deficits.

Perry, a Republican, campaigned on the strength of the Texas economy and made political hay of the fact the Lone Star state had avoided California's massive deficit, pegged at $25.4 billion through the upcoming budget year."

And how did Texas respond?  By firing over 10,000 State workers, and slashing education funding in a State already near the bottom in public education.  So, how did that work out for them?

"Now Texas faces a budget deficit estimated as high as $27 billion for the upcoming two-year cycle of 2012-2013"

Texas, $27 billion; California, $0.  Punitive slashing of essential government duties versus going to the taxpayers with the truth and asking them to do the right thing.  Who could have guessed that facing our responsibilities could work out better than just giving in to unbridled greed?

Additional note:  Not that Jerry Brown could have accomplished this all on his own.  Here he is with the hard working member of his staff who undoubtedly deserves most of the credit for this accomplishment:

Wingnut Wrapup

Today's Wingnut Wrapup is respectfully dedicated to a man who shows the ability to encapsulate all of the fear that plagues the right in one sentence:

Stanley Zir, Renew America:  "In Obama coup I wrote "If we lose this election, this is what Obama has in store for us: "The Greater Good." Take heed"

The greater good!  God help us.  If the founding fathers thought the government was going to be used to promote the greater good, they would have just stayed in bed!

Barbara Simpson, World Net Daily:  "Anti-gunners: Please shut up!"

In fact, everyone with a brain, shut up!  Then people like Barbara will have so much easier a time getting their way.

World Net Daily:  "Why Chuck Norris is never depressed..."

He's probably so hopped up on steroids that he can't even tell which century he's living in.

Town Hall:  "Obama ‘Has Put a Pistol to the Head of the Middle Class’

Finally, a conservative with a reason for gun control.

Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit:  "Rep. Raul Labrador: “Democrats Are Like Bank Robbers” Who Want to Raise Taxes on Everyone"

Funny, but I never heard a bank robber call for higher taxes.  Maybe I just lead a very sheltered life.

Leah Barkoukis, Town Hall:  "Hollywood Hypocrites: Video Contrasts Celebs Demanding a Gun Control Plan with Gun Violence Scenes from their Films"

Listen, Leah, there's this thing called reality, and then there are movies, where no one is actually killed.  On second thought, forget it.  The whole concept of reality is beyond your grasp.

Jeff Jacoby, Town Hall:  "People Are Truly Good at Heart? Sadly, No"

Not the ones you hang out with, Jeff.

Bryan Preston, PJ Media:  "Gov. Chris Christie Throws Boehner Under the Bus, Backs Over Him Repeatedly"

And with Chris Christie in the driver's seat, that's got to hurt.

Washington Post Editorial Board:  "Sadly, the economic pain caused by Mr. Chavez could, after his death, help create a political movement that will revere his memory. Forty years after the death of Juan Peron, Peronism still haunts and holds back Argentina. If Venezuela is to escape a similar curse, Mr. Chavez’s successors will have to balance economic stabilization against the need to build a political system where democracy, and not autocratic populism, can thrive."

"Autocratic populism..."  That's a new one on me.  I'm guessing that "democracy" is when a foreign country elects a leader who does what the United States wants, while "autocratic populism" is when they elect a leader who does what is best for them.

And way to go, Washington Post- making Wingnut Wrapup, and it's not even a column by Jennifer Rubin.

Guy Benson, Town Hall:  "Report: Obamacare Triggering Double Digit Premium Increases...Health insurance companies across the country are seeking and winning double-digit increases in premiums for some customers...In California, Aetna is proposing rate increases of as much as 22 percent, Anthem Blue Cross 26 percent and Blue Shield of California 20 percent for some of those policy holders..."

By "triggering," of course, Guy must mean "insurance companies using Obamacare as just one more excuse to rob billions more dollars from the insured, so they can go on giving vast "salaries" to their CEO's."  Well, there is a simple answer to all of this- a single payer system that will drive all of these damned ghouls out of business once and for all.  In the end, the elimination of private health insurance is going to be a necessary component of any real scheme to limit health care costs.  Its us versus them, buddy, and you'd better be with us, if you don't want to die in the street waiting to have your health care authorized by some jerk that would rather have you dead if it will save money for the company.

Repair Man Jack, Red State:  "What Did Congress Do About Hurricane Sandy? Rape it for What It’s Worth!"

Hey, Jack, it's not rape unless Sandy fought back.  And anyway, it doesn't count, because hurricanes can't get pregnant from being raped by Congress.  Oh well, let's look on the bright side- at least here's a wingnut who is concerned about rape.

Howard Nemerov, PJ Media:  "New ‘Less Lethal’ Shotgun Round Geared Towards School Defense"

Oh great, that will solve the problem.  Now, if we could just get the killers to use them...

And now, scandals that are going nowhere, edition 11,000 or so:

Andrea Shea King, World Net Daily:  "White House photo looks like lies?  Exclusive: Andrea Shea King covers investigation into possible Benghazi baloney"

Andrea's journalistic scoop revolves around this photo, taken the day of the Behghazi attacks

Andrea says:

"As is now the norm, the “new media” are doing the work the “traditional” media is not: analyzing the photo against published facts, comparing previous “official” statements, researching and noting inconsistencies...Inconsistencies like this one, which asks, “If the attack began at 3:30 p.m. (D.C. time), 9:30 p.m. (Benghazi) – then what was happening at 7:30 p.m. when this picture was taken? Obviously POTUS was not situationally aware. Was this the ‘first’ notification of the crisis? Yet it is a full four hours after the attack began.”

And she has a lot more to say along these lines.  It is truly a sign of wingnuts' desperation to find anything they can pin on Obama that they have to resort to nearly incomprehensible idiocy like this.

Roger L. Simon, PJ Media:  "Forget the economy: the irreparable damage from Obama is in his dealings abroad... the real permanent damage is being done elsewhere.  And when I say permanent damage, I mean it."

He sure does, even though he can't really come up with too much in the way of specifics.  Oh well, with the economy slowly recovering despite the Republicans' best efforts to destroy it, I guess they have to complain about something.  Anyway, the real reason I cited this article is one of the great wingnut lines of all time:

"Forget objective reality."

Believe it or not, that is Roger's claim- if you just forget objective reality you can believe what he has to say.  Here is one of the few times that I will link to this right wing garbage, because even after all of the crap that I find to put in this column, it is still hard for even me to believe that wingnuts can be so deranged.  Check it out if you don't believe me.

Gina Miller, Renew America:  "Wanted: ten thousand Hobby Lobbies...America needs ten thousand more. America needs thousands of businesses to resist this lawless administration in Washington and stand on the principles of freedom as Hobby Lobby has bravely done."

America needs ten thousand more employers so greedy that they won't treat their employees like human beings.  Well, don't you worry your little head about it, Gina.  There are ten thousand more.  That's why we have to pass laws to make these people act like something other than animals.

Astute Bloggers:  "DID HAGEL STEAL THE ELECTION FOR OBAMA, AND IS HIS NOMINATION AS SECDEF PAYOFF?"

Finally, the explanation for why Obama won!  It was all Chuck Hagel's doing.  Of course! Why didn't we think of that sooner?  And how did Hagel manage this?

"(Hagel) served as a Chairman and was CEO of American Information Systems Inc. (AIS), later known as Election Systems & Software, a computerized voting machine manufacturer..."

Of course, Hagel resigned from that position in 1995.  So I guess he put the fix in for Obama thirteen years before Obama ran for President, before Obama had ever held elected office, and when he was essentially unknown.   Maybe we should check where Hagel was in August, 1961.  He could be the person who put Obama's fake birth announcement in the Honolulu papers.

Ben Shapiro, Breitbart:  "The left’s goal is to shut down the political debate by decrying their opponents as victimizers. They label their opponents racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic, benighted, backwards bitter clingers. They liken them to Nazis, KKK members, terrorists. Then they cast them out like lepers from the political debate. Because who would bother debating a Nazi, or a KKK member, or a terrorist?"

Ben, you right wingers are " racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic, benighted, backwards bitter clingers."  You are like Nazis and KKK members, who were all right wingers, and terrorists, who are also largely conservative religious fanatics.  That's the truth, Ben.  I know you don't like it, but too bad.  And Ben, your day is over.  You may live on, getting paid by a host of rich right wing assholes to write things like this, but the number of people who believe any of your crap gets smaller every day.  The only way you can win now is by cheating and terror- like the Nazis and the KKK, whom you resemble more and more every day.  Cleared up about things now, are we?

Elizabeth Meineke, Town Hall:  "Think Al Qaeda Is Dead? Think Again"

And here's her proof- a picture of a guy with a beard:

Well, I guess that proves that, then, huh?

Larry Klayman, Renew America:  "Today, and as just one example among an ever-expanding array of disgraceful illegal acts by our judges on a daily basis, the refusal of courts to hear eligibility challenges concerning the status of Barack Hussein Obama as a "natural born citizen" reinforces the reality that we no longer have a functional legal system. Notwithstanding that the result is a black-Muslim, anti-white, anti-Semitic and anti-Christian "Manchurian candidate" fraudster socialist tyrant in the Oval Office — bent on tearing down and destroying the pillars of our formerly capitalist society"

The latest rant from a guy who has been bringing you phony scandals since Whitewater.  Man, times are tough for Conservatives when they can't come up with anything better than the birth certificate crap after all these years.

And, let's finish off with this exciting news:

World Net Daily EXCLUSIVE!  "Sarah Palin's brother pitches new political party"

As if things weren't bad enough already.
